Item does not contain fulltext Filamentous basidiomycetes (BM) are common environmental fungi that have recently emerged as important human pathogens, inciting a wide array of clinical manifestations that include allergic and invasive diseases. We reviewed 218 reported global cases of BM fungi. The most common etiologic agent was Schizophyllum commune in 52.3% (114/218) of the cases followed by Hormographiella aspergillata (n = 13; 5.9%), Ceriporia lacerata (n = 11; 5%), and, rarely, Volvariella volvacea, Inonotus tropicalis, Irpex lacteus, Phellinus undulates, Perenniporia species, Bjerkandera adusta, Sporotrichum pruinosum, Phanerochaete steroids, and Cyclomyces tabacinus. These fungi are present in the environment as gilled mushrooms, shelf fungi, and bracket fungi. However, in clinical settings, they usually present as nonsporulating white moulds that are difficult to identify. Moreover, the GenBank database of these fungi is limited. Regarding the country-wise distribution of cases, Japan topped the list with about 43% (n = 94) of globally reported cases, followed by India (57; 26%), the United States (4%), Austria (3.2%), Iran (3.2%), France (2.8%), and the remaining one-third from 16 other countries. The respiratory tract was the most commonly afflicted site (n = 71), with the majority of the cases (42; 59.1%) being allergic in etiology and comprising 34 cases of allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis. Also, B. adusta has been implicated in a recently described clinical entity, that is, fungus associated chronic cough, reported exclusively from Japan. BM fungi-incited diseases are currently underdiagnosed due to lack of awareness and expertise, warranting comprehensive epidemiological and susceptibility studies to determine their prevalence and to predict a more appropriate therapy.

Summary Perenniporia species, members of basidiomycetes, are known as decay fungi from wood of hardwood tree species. The clinical significance of these non-sporulating fungi from respiratory tract specimens is unknown. They have frequently been discarded as contaminants. There was only one case report of pulmonary fungal ball with positive culture for a Perenniporia species. We report herein a case of invasive pulmonary infection caused by the novel species of Perenniporia in a 44-year-old woman with active systemic lupus erythematosus who was successfully treated with voriconazole.

In this paper, we present the responses of the white-rot fungus Perenniporia medulla-panis to iron availability with regard to alterations in growth, expression of cellular proteins, Fe3+-reducing activity, and Fe3+chelators production. Iron supplementation stimulated fungal growth but did not result in a significant increase in biomass production. Catechol and hydroxamate derivatives were produced mainly under iron deficiency, and their productions were repressed under iron supplementation conditions. Perenniporia medulla-panis showed several cellular proteins in the range of 10–90 kDa. Some of them showed negative iron-regulation. Iron-supplemented medium also repressed both cell surface and extracellular Fe3+-reducing activities; however, the highest cell surface activity was detected at the initial growth phase, whereas extracellular activity increased throughout the incubation period. No significant production of chelators and extracellular Fe3+-reducing activity were observed within the initial growth phase, suggesting that the reduction of Fe3+to Fe2+is performed by ferrireductases.

Sequences of mitochondrial SSU rDNA were obtained from six species of Antrodia and related fungal taxa to reveal their phylogenetic relationships. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the species of Antrodia did not cluster into a single clade. Brown rot fungi were separated into two main groups through which Antrodia was dispersed. Antrodia sinuosa, A. serialis, A. heteromorpha and A. malicola clustered with Perenniporia, Fomitopsis, Piptoporus, Daedalea and Melanoporia within one group of brown rot fungi, while A. carbonica and A. vaillantii clustered with Oligoporus, Gloeophyllum and Auriporia within the other group of brown rot fungi, indicating that Antrodia is a heterogeneous genus and that brown rot fungi have evolved convergently.

The type specimens of Perenniporia contraria and of its presumed taxonomic synonym, Fomes subannosus, have been revisited. In addition, some recent collections identified as Fi contraria have been re-examined, demonstrating tl lat the present concept of the latter taxon is confused. The species is illustrated and its concept redefined. Fomes subannosus, though closely related to P. contraria, is recognized as a distinct taxon on account of basidiocarp shape, pore size and the width of skeletal hyphae. The taxonomic placement of both taxa is discussed. Both species are endemic to neotropical America. All other specimens examined and originating from other continents belong to different taxa.

The type and a second specimen of Perenniporia detrita (Basidiomycetes, Aphyllophorales) have been studied in order to ascertain the status of this taxon. These studies have shown that two species were included in the original material. Furthermore, the types of the previously proposed taxonomic synonyms of Pe. detrita, viz. Polyporus vicinus, Po. delavayi, Fomes mesoleucus, Po. labis and Trametes atra were reexamined. The three former represent three distinct species. The types of Polyporus labis and T. atra are sterile and their identification is uncertain. Perenniporia sprucei is described as new, and the new combinations Pe. delavayi (synonym Pe. formosana) and Pe. vicina are proposed.

Four new resupinate species, Perenniporia hainaniana, P. macropora, P. russeimarginata and P. subtephropora, are described as new from southern China on the basis of morphological and molecular examination. Perenniporia hainaniana is characterized by a perennial growth habit, cream to buff pore surface, a dimitic to trimitic hyphal system with amyloid skeletal hyphae and presence of dendrohyphidia. Perenniporia macropora is distinguished by an annual growth habit, large pores (2-3 per mm), a dimitic hyphal system with branched skeletal hyphae and presence of dendrohyphidia. Perenniporia russeimarginata differs from other species in the genus by a perennial growth habit, white to cream pore surface and reddish to reddish brown sterile margin. Perenniporia subtephropora is characterized by a perennial growth habit, cream-buff to grayish buff pore surface, hymenophoral trama becoming black in KOH and a dimitic hyphal system with branched skeletal hyphae. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from the ITS and LSU-rDNA regions revealed eight clades for Perenniporia sensu lato with the four new species recognized in Perenniporia sensu stricto. The Perenniporia ochroleuca group, P. vicina group, P. martia group, P. subacida, Microporellus, Perenniporiella and Abundisporus, formed monophyletic entities respectively, and they are not related to P. medulla-panis (generic type), which belongs to Perenniporia sensu stricto. Abundisporus, Microporellus and Perenniporiella were widely applied as generic names. Other generic or clade names, Hornodermoporus, Truncospora, Vanderbylia and the P. subacida clade, have not been widely applied, but they are valid higher level taxa containing former species of Perenniporia. A key to genera and clades allied with Perennioporia sensu stricto and a key to species of Perennioporia are provided.

Perenniporiella chaquenia sp. nov. is described from Argentina. New records of P. pendula and P micropora are discussed. A key to Perenniporiella species is presented. Preliminary phylogenetic relationships of Perenniporiella are inferred from parsimony and Bayesian analysis of a combined set of DNA sequence data (nuclear ribosomal partial LSU and ITS). It. demonstrated that Perenniporiella forms a well resolved monophyletic clade distantly related to Perenniporia s.s. It also clearly showed that within Perenniporia as Usually conceived other morphologically homogeneous group of taxa, Such as the P. ochroleuca or P. vicina alliances, form well resolved clades, which Could be recognized as distinct genera. The differentiation of the hyphal system and the basidiospores morphology are outlined as critical features for the definition of genera in the Perenniporia complex. Fil: Robledo, Gerardo Lucio.
