Aim/Introduction Urotensin II (UII) and autophagy have been considered as important components in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. The present study explores whether UII can regulate autophagy in kidney and its effect in diabetes. Materials and Methods Immunohistochemistry and western blot were conducted on the kidney tissues of diabetic UII receptor (UT) gene knock-out mice, wild type diabetic mice, and normal control mice. For in vitro experiment, HK-2 cells were treated with UII (10-7 mol/L) in the presence or absence of UT antagonist, SB-657510, (10-6 mol/L) or autophagy inducer Rapamycin (10-3 mol/L) for 12 h. Markers for autophagy (LC3-II, p62/SQSTM1) and extracellular matrix (fibronectin, collagen IV) were analyzed. Results In diabetic UT knock-out mice, expression of LC3-II is increased and p62 is reduced in comparison to that of the normal diabetic mice. Fibronectin and collagen IV are down-regulated in diabetic UT knock-out mice when compared to that of the normal diabetic mice. For in vitro cell experiment, UII is shown to inhibit expression LC3-II and increase expression of p62 in comparison to that of the normal control. Treatment with SB-657510 can block UII-induced down-regulation of LC3-II and upregulation of p62 while inhibiting UII-induced upregulation of fibronectin and collagen IV. Adding autophagy inducer Rapamycin also inhibited UII-induced upregulation of fibronectin and collagen IV. Conclusion Our study is the first to show that UII can down-regulate autophagy in kidney while accompanying the increased production of ECM in early diabetes. Our in vitro study also demonstrates that upregulation of autophagy can decrease UII-induced production of ECM in HK-2 cell. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

One of the most prevalent malignant primary brain tumors is primary glioma. Although glutathione peroxidase 8 (GPX8) is intimately associated with carcinogenesis, its function in primary gliomas has not yet been thoroughly understood. Here, we leveraged Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA), The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), and Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) database to investigate the association between GPX8 and overall survival (OS) of patients with primary gliomas, and our results showed that GPX8 expression was negatively correlated with OS. Moreover, the expression of GPX8 is significantly lower in normal tissue when compared to glioma tissue. According to results of univariate and multivariate analysis from CGGA using R studio, GPX8 is a valuable primary glioma prognostic indicator. Interestingly, high GPX8 expression is correlated positively with the hedgehog and kras signaling pathways and negatively with G2 checkpoint, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) pathway, and interferon gamma pathway, which could be beneficial for the proliferation of glioma cells. Furthermore, GPX8 knockdown caused G1 cell cycle arrest, increased cell death, and reduced colony formation in U87MG and U118MG cells. In conclusion, GPX8 is a promising therapeutic target and meaningful prognostic biomarker of primary glioma.

Objectives Optical Coherence Tomograph (OCT) imaging technology can be used to examine, in vivo, the human ET. At present, it is impossible to achieve the OCT scanning vivo and ex vivo in the same individual human body, or study the consistency between OCT images and histological images of the eustachian tube nasopharyngeal region and adjacent structures. The aim of this study was to determine the consistency between OCT images and histological sections in vivo and ex vivo in miniature pigs. Methods OCT imaging was performed on five adult miniature pigs in vivo and ex vivo. The images of the eustachian tube OCT (ET-OCT), nasopharynx OCT (NP-OCT) and histological cross sections were further studied. Results All five miniature pigs achieved the OCT scan successfully, acquiring ET-OCT and NP-OCT images in vivo and ex vivo on both sides. The acquired ET OCT images closely matched the histological images, revealing details of the cartilage, submucosa, glands, and mucosa. The lower segment of the ET wall mucosa had an abundance of glands and submucosal tissues, with more low-signal areas appearing in the ex vivo images. The NP-OCT images of the nasopharynx matched the details of the mucosa and submucosal tissues. The ex-vivo OCT images showed thicker mucosa and more scattered slightly lower signal areas compared to the vivo OCT images. Conclusions ET-OCT images and NP-OCT images matched the histological structure of eustachian tube nasopharyngeal region structures in miniature pigs both in vivo and ex vivo. OCT images may be sensitive to changes in edema and ischemia status. There is a great potential for morphological assessment of inflammation, edema, injure, mucus gland status.

In order to account for the variability in gait speed due to demographic factors, an observed gait speed value can be compared with its predicted value based on age, sex, and body height (observed gait speed divided by predicted gait speed, termed "GS%predicted" henceforth). This study aimed to examine the screening accuracy of an optimal GS%predicted threshold for prefrailty/frailty.This cross-sectional study included 998 community-dwelling ambulant participants aged50 years (mean age = 68 years). Participants completed a multi-domain geriatric screen and a physical fitness assessment, from which the 10-m habitual gait speed, GS%predicted, Physical Frailty Phenotype (PFP) index, and 36-item Frailty Index (FI) were computed.Based on the FI, ~49% of participants had pre-frailty or frailty. The optimal threshold of GS%predicted (0.93) had greater screening accuracy than the 1.0 m/s fixed threshold for gait speed (AUC, 0.65 vs. 0.60; DeLong's P 0.001). Replacing gait speed with GS%predicted in the PFP improved its overall discrimination (AUC, 0.70 vs. 0.67 of original PFP; DeLong's P 0.001).Defining a "slow" gait speed by a GS%predicted value of0.93 provided greater screening accuracy than the traditional 1.0 m/s threshold for gait speed. Our results also support the use of GS%predicted-derived PFP to identify older adults at risk of prefrailty/frailty. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2022; 22: 575-580.

BackgroundThe differential risk profiles associated with prefrailty may be attributable to underlying intrinsic capacity (IC).ObjectivesWe examine (i) effect of a multi-domain physical exercise and nutrition intervention on pre-frailty reversal in community-dwelling older adults at 1-year, and (ii) whether IC contributes to pre-frailty reversal.MethodsPrefrail participants in this non-randomized study were invited to attend a 4-month exercise and nutritional intervention following a frailty screen in the community. Prefrailty was operationalized as (i) FRAIL score 1–2 or (ii) 0 positive response on FRAIL but with weak grip strength or slow gait speed based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia cut-offs. Participants who fulfilled operational criteria for prefrailty but declined enrolment in the intervention programme served as the control group. All participants completed baseline IC assessment: locomotion (Short Physical Performance Battery, 6-minute walk test), vitality (nutritional status, muscle mass), sensory (self-reported hearing and vision), cognition (self-reported memory, age- and education adjusted cognitive performance), psychological (Geriatric Depression Scale-15, self-reported anxiety/ depression). Reversal of prefrailty was defined as achieving a FRAIL score of 0, with unimpaired grip strength and gait speed at 1-year follow-up.ResultsOf 81 participants (70.0 ± 6.6 years, 79.0% female), 52 participants (64.2%) were enrolled in the multi-domain intervention, and 29 participants (35.8%) who declined intervention constituted the control group. There was no difference in age, gender and baseline composite IC between groups. Reversal to robustness at 1-year was similar between intervention and control groups (30.8% vs. 44.8% respectively, p = 0.206). Reduced prevalence of depression was observed among participants in the intervention group at 1-year relative to baseline (7.8% vs. 23.1%, p = 0.022). In multiple logistic regression, intervention had no effect on prefrailty reversal, while higher composite IC exhibited reduced likelihood of remaining prefrail at 1-year (OR = 0.67, 95% CI 0.45–1.00, p = 0.049).ConclusionFocusing only on the locomotion and vitality domains through a combined exercise and nutritional intervention may not adequately address component domain losses to optimize prefrailty reversal. Future studies should examine whether an IC-guided approach to target identified domain declines may be more effective in preventing frailty progression.

A fast, selective and reproducible LC-MS/MS method with simple sample preparation was developed and validated for a polar compound, allopurinol in human plasma, using acyclovir as internal standard (IS). Chromatographic separation was achieved using Agilent Poroshell 120 EC-C18 (100 × 2.1 mmID, 2.7 µm) analytical column. The mobile phase was comprised of 0.1%v/v formic acid-methanol (95:05; v/v), at a flow rate of 0.45 mL/min. The effect of different protein precipitation agents used in sample preparation such as methanol, acetonitrile, a mixture of acetonitrile-methanol and a mixture of acetonitrile-acetone were evaluated to optimize the extraction efficiency of allopurinol and IS. The use of acetone-acetonitrile (50:50, v/v) as protein precipitating agent shortened the sample preparation time and improved the recovery of allopurinol to above 93%. The IS-normalised matrix factors at two concentration levels were 1.0, with CV of 5.1% and 4.2%. Allopurinol in plasma was stable at benchtop for 24 h, in autosampler tray for 48 h, in instrumentation room for 48 h, in freezer after 7 freeze-thaw cycles and in freezer for 140 days. Allopurinol stock standard solutions were stable for 140 days at room temperature and in the chiller. The short sample run time of the validated bioanalytical method allowed high throughput analysis of plasma samples in pharmacokinetic study of an allopurinol formulation. The robustness and reproducibility of the bioanalytical method was reaffirmed through incurred sample reanalysis (ISR).

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) are widely expressed in various effector cells and have been proved to play vital roles in smooth muscle contraction and digestive secretion. However, there are relatively few literatures revealing the roles of mAChRs in inflammatory processes, and its underlying regulatory mechanisms have not been elucidated. Taking the advantages of live imaging of zebrafish, we found that inhibition of mAChRs resulted in increased neutrophils recruitment and proinflammatory cytokines expression, whereas activation of mAChRs led to opposite outcome. Subsequently, we found that mAChRs regulated the expression of arginases (args), and pharmacological intervention of args level could reverse the effects of mAChRs on neutrophils migration and cytokines expression, suggesting that args are important downstream proteins of mAChRs that mediate the regulation of inflammatory response. In this study, we identified args as novel downstream proteins of mAChRs in inflammatory responses, providing additional evidence for system immune regulation of cholinergic receptors.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of conserved small RNA with a length of 21–24 nucleotides in eukaryotes, which are involved in development and defense responses against biotic and abiotic stresses. By RNA-seq, Osa-miR444b.2 was identified to be induced after Rhizoctonia solani (R. solani) infection. In order to clarify the function of Osa-miR444b.2 responding to R. solani infection in rice, transgenic lines over-expressing and knocking out Osa-miR444b.2 were generated in the background of susceptible cultivar Xu3 and resistant cultivar YSBR1, respectively. Over-expressing Osa-miR444b.2 resulted in compromised resistance to R. solani. In contrast, the knocking out Osa-miR444b.2 lines exhibited improved resistance to R. solani. Furthermore, knocking out Osa-miR444b.2 resulted in increased height, tillers, smaller panicle, and decreased 1000-grain weight and primary branches. However, the transgenic lines over-expressing Osa-miR444b.2 showed decreased primary branches and tillers, but increased panicle length. These results indicated that Osa-miR444b.2 was also involved in regulating the agronomic traits in rice. The RNA-seq assay revealed that Osa-miR444b.2 mainly regulated the resistance to rice sheath blight disease by affecting the expression of plant hormone signaling pathways-related genes such as ET and IAA, and transcription factors such as WRKYs and F-boxes. Together, our results suggest that Osa-miR444b.2 negatively mediated the resistance to R. solani in rice, which will contribute to the cultivation of sheath blight resistant varieties.

Parachute mitral valve is a rare congenital heart defect characterised by a distorted mitral geometry with a single papillary muscle for all mitral chords to attach. It may develop in isolation or as a constillation of Shone syndrome. By comprehensive retrieval of the pertinent articles published since 2000, 22 articles with 149 cases of parachute mitral valve were recruited into this study. The present article revealed that most patients with a parachute mitral valve had a stenotic or regurgitant mitral valve, which is often associated with left heart obstructions, thereby leading to haemodynamic compromise. Therefore, multiple surgical maneuvers are warranted for such patients. Mitral valve repair is preferred over mitral valve replacement for the mitral valve abnormalities so as to avoid the associated complications of valve replacement procedure. The patients' outcomes are satisfactory with a total event-free survival of surgical patients of 84.8%. Key Words: Cardiac surgical procedures, Congenital heart defects, Mitral valve.

BackgroundA parachute tricuspid valve is a very rare congenital cardiac anomaly. Its morphological features and clinical implications have not been sufficiently described so far. The purpose of the present systematic review is to disclose the morphological and clinical characteristics of parachute tricuspid valve, and to discuss its diagnostic methods, treatments and patients’ outcomes.Main bodyThe Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement guidelines were followed in this systematic review. Publications were systematically searched in the PubMed, Highwire Press, and the Cochrane Library databases. By comprehensive retrieval of the pertinent literature published between 1979 and 2019, 13 reports were collected with 14 patients recruited into this study. Their ages ranged from neonate to 52 years old with a median age of 23 years. Tricuspid valve regurgitation of a less-than-severe degree was seen in 6 (60%) patients, tricuspid valve stenosis was present in 3 (30%) patients and normally functioning tricuspid valve was noted in 1 (10%) patient. All patients had a single papillary muscle in the right ventricle. The chordae tendineae could be normal in length and thickness, or elongated, or shortened and thickened. Forty percent of the patients were asymptomatic or with only mild symptoms and did not need a surgical or interventional therapy, and 6 (60%) patients were indicated for a surgical/interventional treatment due to their severe presenting symptoms, associated congenital heart defects, and the resultant severe right ventricular inflow obstruction and (or) tricuspid stenosis. Patients’ outcomes varied depending on the substantial status of the patients with a survival rate of 70% and mortality rate of 30%.ConclusionA few patients with a parachute tricuspid valve are asymptomatic or only with mild symptoms and a surgical or interventional treatment is not required. The surgical/interventional indications for parachute tricuspid valve patients are their severe presenting symptoms, associated congenital heart defects, and the resultant severe right ventricular inflow obstruction and (or) tricuspid stenosis. The survival rate of this patient setting is satisfactory.

Normal dissolved oxygen in water is essential for maintaining the physiological functions of fish, but environmental pollution, such as eutrophication can lead to a decrease in oxygen content in water. How this reduction of dissolved oxygen in water affects the immune functions of fish and the potential regulatory mechanisms have not been thoroughly elucidated. In this study, we made full use of the aquatic model animal zebrafish to explore this question. In a model of LPS-induced inflammation, we found that hypoxia induced by infusing nitrogen into water increased the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as il-1β, il-6, and il-8. In vivo imaging also showed that hypoxia significantly increased neutrophil migration to the site of caudal fin injury in the transgenic line. Subsequently, we found that the phosphorylation level of ERK protein was significantly activated upon hypoxia and proved the roles of ERK signaling in the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and neutrophil migration in zebrafish. This study indicated that reduced water oxygen significantly increases the inflammatory response of the zebrafish.

Surgical treatment of coronary artery disease in the systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients has not been comprehensively addressed. The present review aimed to give an overview of coronary artery disease in the SLE patients receiving coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The study materials were based on comprehensive literature retrieval, which recruited 17 pertinent articles with 30 patients. No differences were found in the graft patencies between the arterial and venous grafts; and between the early and late patency rates. Pathological inspections revealed that all graft vessels were normal with no signs of SLE-related atherosclerosis or vasculitis, one coronary artery was pathologically normal, and another coronary artery showed vasculitis. The coexisting disorders, including diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and nephropathy in the SLE patients cause early deterioration of the saphenous vein grafts. Early occlusion of the saphenous vein grafts was also observed in SLE patients. The left anterior descending coronary artery was most commonly affected by SLE and was the most common coronary artery requiring a CABG procedure. The graft vessels, both arterial and venous, rarely degenerated; whereas, early and late graft failure was usually caused by technical failures. The lack of vasculitis and atherosclerosis in the arterial grafts encourage surgeons to prefer to use the arterial grafts in SLE patients. Less invasive surgical technique would favour the patients in terms of long-term outcomes. Key Words: Coronary artery bypass grafting, Graft occlusion, Vascular, Systemic lupus erythematosus.

The relationships between interleukin (IL)-6 and cardiac myxoma remain to be clarified. This article systematically reviewed the IL-6 properties in cardiac myxoma patients based on retrieval of pertinent literature published between 1998 and 2018. Significant differences were found in circulating IL-6 values between preoperation and 1 and 6 months after operation. Preoperative circulating IL-6 correlated significantly with tumour volume (r=0.8552, p=0.003), while there were no significant correlations with maximal tumour dimension (r=0.2443, p=0.190). No correlation was found between circulating IL-6 at 1 and 6 months after tumour resection with either tumour volume or with maximal tumour dimension. The positive rate of immunostaining of IL-6 in cardiac myxoma tissues was 93.3%. Overproduction of IL-6 is responsible for the inflammatory presentations, constitutional symptoms, and recurrence and distal embolisation of cardiac myxoma. Cardiac myxoma could be a cellular source of IL-6 release. Cardiac myxoma resection is an absolute choice of eliminating IL-6 production in these patients. Post-cardiac surgery chylopericardium is a rare complication. This systematic review included 87 articles with 119 patients of post-cardiac surgery chylopericardium. Chylopericardium developed after operations for congenital heart defect more than those for acquired heart disease, and more patients in whom post-cardiac surgery chylopericardium developed were with complex than with simple congenital heart defects. Cardiac tamponade occurred in 35 (29.4%) patients. The onset time of chylopericardium was 18.2 days earlier in patients operated for acquired than in those for congenital heart defects. Post-cardiac surgery chylopericardium were curable to conservative treatment in most patients. The recurrence of post-cardiac surgery chylopericardium was on day 13.2 ±18.2 after the initial treatment. The overall early and late mortality rates were 1.7% (2/119) and 1.7% (2/117), respectively. Most patients with post-cardiac surgery chylopericardium were diagnosed by laboratory analysis of chylous fluid. Patients with mild chylopericardium usually show good response to conservative treatment. Whereas, patients with massive chylopericardium and rapid accumulation, incurable to conservative treatment and recurrent to either conservative or surgical treatment, warrant further surgical treatment. The transmembrane receptors integrins are the bridges for cell‐cell or cell‐ECM interaction, which is strictly correlated to cancer development in several tumor types. Here, we revealed that integrin β8 serves as a driver to mediate sustained growth of bladder cancer and development of drug resistance. The elevated expression of integrin β8 was observed in highly malignant bladder tumor tissues from patients. The in vitro and in vivo results further indicated that integrin β8 overexpression in Biu87/T24 bladder cancer could mediate and strengthen cell proliferation and resistance to mitomycin C and hydroxycamptothecin. Mechanistically, integrin β8 on the cellular surface might recruit phosphorylated Y‐box binding protein 1, leading to the activation of c‐Myc and nuclear factor‐κB signals. Pharmacological targeting of integrin β8 by Arg‐Gly‐Asp‐Ser efficiently suppressed sustained growth and drug resistance in bladder cancer cells. Our findings identified integrin β8 as a marker of bladder cancer diagnosis and development, and provides an innovative approach for clinical bladder cancer therapy., We found that integrin β8 expression induces bladder cancer sustained growth and drug resistance through a Y‐box binding protein 1‐associated signaling pathway. Blockade of integrin β8 efficiently improves anticancer effects, revealing a new target for bladder cancer therapy.

The present study was to evaluate antioxidative effect of tea extract granule (TEG) on oxidative stress induced by cyclophosphamide (Cy) in chickens. In experiment 1, chickens were randomly divided into 5 groups with 10 birds in each. Groups 3 to 5 were orally administered TEG in drinking water for 7 D at doses of 20, 40, and 80 mg/kg body weight, respectively. After that, groups 2 to 5 received intramuscular injection of Cy (100 mg/kg BW) for 3 D. Group 1 was not treated as a control. In experiment 2, chickens were grouped in the same way as in experiment 1. Groups 2 to 5 received intramuscular injection of Cy (100 mg/kg BW) for 3 D. After that, groups 3 to 5 were orally administered TEG in drinking water for 7 D at doses of 20, 40, and 80 mg/kg BW, respectively. Results showed that Cy injection induced significantly decreased body weight and oxidative stress. Oral administration of TEG before or after Cy injection increased body weight, the thymus, bursa, and spleen indices, total antioxidant capacity, and the levels of glutathione; elevated the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase; as well as decreased the protein carbonyl content, lipid peroxide, and malondialdehyde. In addition, TEG administration reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species. Therefore, TEG could be a promising agent against oxidative stress in the poultry industry.

Mycobacteria have shown enormous resilience to survive and persist by remodeling and altering metabolic requirements. Under stringent conditions or exposure to drugs, mycobacteria have adapted to rescue themselves by shutting down their major metabolic activity and elevate certain survival factor levels and efflux pathways to survive and evade the effects of drug treatments. A fundamental feature in this adaptation is the ability of mycobacteria to vary the enzyme composition of the electron transport chain (ETC), which generates the proton motive force for the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate via oxidative phosphorylation. Mycobacteria harbor dehydrogenases to fuel the ETC, and two terminal respiratory oxidases, an aa3-type cytochrome c oxidase (cyt-bcc-aa3) and a bacterial specific cytochrome bd-type menaquinol oxidase (cyt-bd). In this study, we employed homology modeling and structure-based virtual screening studies to target mycobacteria-specific residues anchoring the b558 menaquinol binding region of Mycobacterium tuberculosis cyt-bd oxidase to obtain a focused library. Furthermore, ATP synthesis inhibition assays were carried out. One of the ligands MQL-H2 inhibited both NADH2- and succinate-driven ATP synthesis inhibition of Mycobacterium smegmatis inside-out vesicles in micromolar potency. Similarly, MQL-H2 also inhibited NADH2-driven ATP synthesis in inside-out vesicles of the cytochrome-bcc oxidase deficient M. smegmatis strain. Since neither varying the electron donor substrates nor deletion of the cyt-bcc oxidase, a major source of protons, hindered the inhibitory effects of the MQL-H2, reflecting that MQL-H2 targets the terminal oxidase cytochrome bd oxidase, which was consistent with molecular docking studies. Aortobronchial fistulas (ABFs) are rare but fatal if left untreated. Hemoptysis is the most common symptom of the patients. ABFs may occur after any thoracic aortic lesions or maneuveurs for these lesions. The treatment of ABF can be surgical or thoracic endovascular aortic repair. Thoracic endovascular aortic repair can be a safe and less invasive procedure for the treatment of ABFs. However, ABFs might occur in much shorter time after thoracic endovascular aortic repair than any other etiologies. The prognoses of patients with ABFs are poor with a high morbidity and mortality. The selection of a suitable endovascular graft and avoidance of postinterventional complications might effectively prevent the occurrence of ABFs.

The postpericardiotomy syndrome (PPS) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality following heart operation. This systematic review reviewed the literature regarding PPS. It was found to occur on day 18.3 ±15.9 after cardiac operations, most often after coronary artery bypass grafting, and mitral valve replacement. The most common symptoms were new/worsening pericardial effusions, pleuritic chest pain, and fever. The inflammation markers, such as C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, were found to increase significantly in each patient who had these parameters examined. The subjects were managed conservatively in 472 (83.5%) patients, by surgical pericardial drainage in 85 (15.0%) patients, by thora-/pericardio-centesis in 3 (0.5%) patients, and were under surveillance without being treated in 5 (0.9%) patients. Conservative treatment was likely to be associated with a higher recovery rate. Surgical trauma and cardiopulmonary bypass trigger the systemic inflammatory response, which results in antiheart autoantigen release, and the deposited immune complex could be found in the pericardial, pleural, and lung tissues, thereby provoking the occurrence of PPS. Therapeutic options for the refractory cases are long-term oral corticoids or pericardiectomy. Surgical intervention was warranted in 2.6% of the cases due to cardiac tamponade.

A double-chambered right ventricle (DCRV) is a rare congenital heart defect. The clinical features of DCRV, especially in the pediatric population, have not been sufficiently elaborated. There are many unanswered questions regarding the surgical indications, surgical timing, natural history, and patient outcomes. This article will discuss the definition, pathophysiology, clinical features and treatment of DCRV. This systematic review showed a higher prevalence of symptomatic patients among children with DCRV with signs of right ventricular pressure overload and associated congenital heart defects. The spatial relation between ventricular septal defect and the anomalous muscle bundle might be a determinant of right ventricular obstruction. Symptomatic patients with an intra-right ventricular pressure gradient of >20 mmHg are indicated for a surgical repair. DCRV has a favourable postoperative course as no postoperative death was reported. Mechanisms of right ventricular obstruction warrant further elucidations based on larger patient population in the near future.

Double-chambered left ventricle is a rare congenital heart defect. The clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and patient prognosis of this lesion have not been sufficiently elaborated. The present systematic review found that the accessory ventricular septum was often an abnormal muscle band, and sometimes a membranous structure, a fibromuscular ridge, or prominent trabeculations. Less than one-third of the patients are associated with other congenital heart defects. Diagnosis of double-chambered left ventricle can usually be made by transthoracic echocardiography; however, it might be misdiagnosed as atrial or ventricular septal defect. The accessory chamber was often smaller than the main chamber, and often has wall thinning. The accessory chamber wall dysfunction/hypokinesis was seen in half of the cases. One-third patients had left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. The adult patients showed abnormal electrocardiographic findings more than in pediatrics. Nevertheless, no differences were found between adult and pediatric patients in terms of left ventricular function and structure, treatment of choice, and patient outcomes. Most patients are asymptomatic with no left ventricular obstruction, and thus do not need surgical treatment. Surgical resection of the accessory ventricular septum is warranted when the patients become symptomatic as a result of left ventricular obstruction, or associated with other congenital heart defects. The patients' outcomes are promising. Differential diagnosis should be made from other types of left ventricular outpouching, other congenital heart defects, and left ventricular non-compaction.

Introduction: Although influenza vaccination reduces rates of pneumonia, hospitalisation and mortality, influenza vaccination uptake remains low in older patients. The primary aim was to compare individualised counselling with educational pamphlets alone in improving influenza vaccination uptake. The secondary aims were to evaluate knowledge and attitudes towards influenza vaccination and factors influencing uptake. Methods: A randomised controlled study was conducted in two government polyclinics with 160 participants per arm. Patients aged 65 years and above attending for doctor consultation were recruited. All participants received an educational pamphlet on influenza vaccination. The intervention group received additional face-to-face counselling. Participants filled a pre- and postintervention questionnaire assessing knowledge of influenza and attitudes towards the vaccine. Follow-up calls and verification of electronic records was done at three months to determine actual vaccine uptake. Results: At three months, 16 (10%) patients in the intervention group and 20 (12.5%) patients in the control group had completed influenza vaccination (p = 0.48). Factors positively associated with vaccine uptake were willingness to receive vaccination immediately after intervention (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 12.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.42–33.38), and male gender (adjusted OR 2.96, 95% CI 1.23–7.12). Individualised counselling was more effective in improving knowledge (p < 0.01). Overall knowledge scores did not influence actual vaccine uptake rates. (adjusted OR 1.10 [0.90–1.3]). Conclusion: Both arms of patient education increased uptake of influenza vaccination. Individualised counselling was not superior to pamphlets alone in improving uptake. Performing vaccination at the initial point of contact improves actual uptake rates.

The study aimed to examine the associations between the level of trihalomethanes and its metabolites in pregnancy and the risks of adverse birth outcomes. We searched the databases of the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang, Vip, PubMed, and Elsevier Science Direct from database establishment to July 14, 2021 and performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies reporting associations between trihalomethanes level and abnormally low birth weight and preterm birth. The pooled odds ratio (OR), pooled risk ratio, and pooled risk difference with their 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated for risk estimates. A total of 24 studies involving 1,118,037 pregnant women were finally enrolled in the present systematic review and meta-analysis. Our research found that abnormally low birth weight was associated with higher levels of total trihalomethanes (OR = 2.45, 95% CI: 1.28, 4.68; P = 0.007). Unexpectedly, the meta-analysis indicated that higher total trihalomethanes level was associated with lower odds of preterm birth (OR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.81, 0.99; P = 0.03). Our findings indicate that trihalomethanes exposure might be a risk factor for abnormally low birth weight and that it would be prudent to minimize exposure to trihalomethanes during pregnancy because of the risk of abnormally low birth weight. Given some limitations of the systematic review and meta-analysis, our results should be interpreted with caution.

This study aims to evaluate the association between autoimmune thyroiditis and Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL).Hundred and five patients with SSNHL were enrolled. Audiometric tests, serum thyroid autoantibodies (TPOAb, TgAb) were studied. Based on the thyroid autoantibody results, patients were divided into two groups: thyroid autoantibody-positive and negative. The relationship between thyroid autoimmunity and audiological characteristics was analyzed.Twenty-six patients (24.8%) of the SSNHL had thyroid autoantibody elevated. The pure tone average (PTA) of patients with and without thyroid autoantibody is 60 ± 38.51 and 54.99 ± 33.87 dBHL, respectively. The PTA was significantly improved in both groups after treatment (We speculate that a potential association between thyroid autoimmunity and SSNHL. Thyroid autoimmunity may be a pathogenesis factor of SSNHL and associated with more severe hearing loss of high-frequency hearing.

Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), which is abnormally increased in the serum of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients consuming a high-fat diet (HFD), may be one of the risk factors for the development of CRC. Ox-LDL exerts a regulatory effect on macrophages and may influence CRC through the tumor microenvironment. The role of ox-LDL in CRC remains unclear.To investigate the role of ox-LDL through macrophages in HFD associated CRC.The expression of ox-LDL and CD206 was detected in colorectal tissues of CRC patients with hyperlipidemia and HFD-fed mice by immunofluorescence. We stimulated the macrophages with 20 μg/mL ox-LDL and assessed the expression levels of CD206 and the cytokines by cell fluorescence and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We further knocked down LOX-1, the surface receptor of ox-LDL, to confirm the function of ox-LDL in macrophages. Then, LoVo cells were co-cultured with the stimulated macrophages to analyze the CD44 and CD133 expression by western blot.The expression of ox-LDL and the CD206 was significantly increased in the stroma of colorectal tissues of CRC patients with hyperlipidemia, and also upregulated in the HFD-fed mice. Moreover, an increased level of CD206 and decreased level of inducible nitric oxide synthase were observed in macrophages after ox-LDL continuous stimulation. Such effects were inhibited when the surface receptor LOX-1 was knocked down in macrophages. Ox-LDL could induce CD206+ macrophages, which resulted in high expression of CD44 and CD133 in co-cultured LoVo cells.Ox-LDL stimulates CD206+ macrophages to upregulate CD44 and CD133 expression in HFD related CRC.

Fluoxetine (FLX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), increases the serotonin levels in the brain to treat depression. Antidepressants have been demonstrated to modulate circadian rhythm, but the underlying mechanisms by which antidepressants regulate circadian rhythm require more research. This study aimed to investigate the role of FLX on circadian rhythm by analyzing the movement behavior and internal circadian oscillations in zebrafish. The results showed that the expression of clock genes clock1a and bmal1b was significantly down-regulated, and the amplitude reduction and phase shift were observed after FLX treatment. Furthermore, FLX exposure inhibited the expression of aanat2, which led to a decrease in nocturnal melatonin secretion. aanat2

Slow gait speed and sit-to-stand performance are associated with adverse clinical outcomes in older adults. Identifying older adults with functional performance "below norms" is the first step toward prevention. We aimed to (1) examine the associations of age, body height, and gender with gait speed and sit-to-stand performance and (2) develop subgroup-specific reference ranges in older adults with no self-reported mobility limitations.Cross-sectional study.This study analyzed data from 775 community-dwelling older adults who reported no difficulty walking 100 m, climbing stairs, and rising from the chair.Gait speed and sit-to-stand performance were measured by the 10-m gait speed test and 5-times sit-to-stand test, respectively. Bayesian linear regression was used to derive 95% reference ranges for gait speed and sit-to-stand performance, defined by different levels of age, body height, and gender.Overall, 95% reference range was 0.89-1.79 m/s for habitual gait speed and 7.4-27.9 stands/30 s for sit-to-stand pace. Age had the highest posterior probability (99%) of a meaningful association with both functional outcomes. Additionally, height was strongly associated with gait speed: a 10-cm increase in height was associated with 0.07 m/s (95% credible interval, 0.05-0.10) faster gait speed. For sit-to-stand test, the lower 95% reference range limits tended to be similar across gender and gender-specific height subgroups, owing to the associations of faster sit-to-stand pace with shorter height and male gender. Because extensive tables of reference ranges are impractical, a web-based application (https://sghpt.shinyapps.io/ippts/) is created to provide subgroup-specific reference ranges.In a large sample of mobile-intact older adults, reference ranges for gait speed and sit-to-stand performance differed meaningfully by age. Furthermore, gait speed was stature dependent. Although requiring validation, our findings may be used to define subgroup-specific "below-range" values and to complement existing universal clinical cut points for gait speed and sit-to-stand performance.

Myocardial infarction/ischemia can be an underlying etiology and a major causative risk factor of cardiovascular hiccups. The objective of this systematic review was to review the literature regarding clinical features and treatments of hiccups of cardiac ischemia origin. PRISMA guidelines were followed. In elderly patients with hiccups of uncertain causes, electrocardiography is necessary to ensure the cardiogenic etiology. Both symptomatic and etiologic treatments can be effective in terminating hiccups. Of the therapeutic regimens, gabapentin is a second-line agent alternative to baclofen in treating hiccups. It is especially helpful in patients undergoing stroke rehabilitation or palliative care when chlorpromazine is prohibited due to its adverse effects. Inferior myocardial infarction is the most common cause of hiccups in this patient setting. In addition to anti-myocardial ischemia agents and percutaneous coronary intervention, coronary artery bypass grafting could be an alternative to hiccups in such patients.

Purpose Liver fibrosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality and the outcome of various chronic liver diseases. Activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) is the key event in liver fibrosis. Studies have confirmed that miR-140-3p plays a potential regulatory effect on HSC activation. However, whether miR-140-3p mediates the liver fibrosis remains unknown. Materials and methods Expression of miR-140-3p was detected by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). Cell proliferation was measured by MTT, while cell apoptosis rate was determined via flow cytometry. Western blot assay was used to detect the expression of cleaved PARP. The fibrogenic effect was evaluated by expression of α-smooth muscle actin and desmin. Functional experiments were performed in transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1)-induced HSC-T6 cells with transfection of anti-miR-140-3p and/or siPTEN. Target binding between miR-140-3p and PTEN was predicted by the TargetScan database and identified using luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation. Results TGF-β1 induced the activation of HSC-T6 cells, and miR-140-3p expression varied according to HSC-T6 cell activation status. Knockdown of miR-140-3p reduced cell proliferation and the expressions of α-SMA and desmin, as well as increased apoptosis, in TGF-β1-induced HSC-T6 cells, which could be blocked by PTEN silencing. Additionally, inactivation of the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway stimulated by miR-140-3p knockdown was abolished when silencing PTEN expression. PTEN was negatively regulated by miR-140-3p via direct binding in HSC-T6 cells. Conclusion miR-140-3p is an important mediator in HSC-T6 cell activation, and miR-140-3p knockdown suppresses cell proliferation and fibrogenesis in TGF-β1-induced HSC-T6 cells, indicating that miR-140-3p may be a potential novel molecular target for liver fibrosis.

BACKGROUND The lesser trochanter (LT) posterior cortical extension (LTPE) fragment is important for joint stability during reconstruction in unstable pertrochanteric hip fractures. This study aimed to investigate the morphological characteristics of the LT fragments using three-dimensional computed tomography (3-D CT) reconstruction and to compare clinical outcomes in different subgroups of 31A2 fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective study included CT images of 58 cases of 31A2 type unstable pertrochanteric fractures, using the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen and Orthopedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA) classification. After 3-D CT reconstruction, all the displaced fragments were reduced and the morphologic parameters of the LT fragments were measured. RESULTS At the mid-level of the LT, the mean cortical extension of the LT fragment was 33.5 mm in the posterior wall (83%), 19.0 mm in the medial wall (53%). The mean distal cortical extension from the lower edge of the LT was 13.0 mm. The LT fragment occupied 38% of the whole cortical circumference. Comparison of the subgroups showed that the LT fragment of A2.3 had a larger cortical extension in the posterior, medial, and distal cortex. The mean fracture collapse was 4.7 mm in A2.2 fractures and 5.4 mm in A2.3 fractures (p=0.311). Despite the increased size of the LT fragment in subtype A2.3 fracture compared with subtype A2.2 fracture, this did not influence the clinical outcome. CONCLUSIONS The 3-D morphology of the LT fragment from CT imaging provided a better understanding of the characteristics of subgroups of unstable pertrochanteric fractures, which may improve and guide implant choice.

Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils due to infection, many patients ultimately have to undergo tonsillectomy. In order to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and even create a new treatment for tonsillitis, we constructed a prokaryotic expression single-chain antibody fragment library against Streptococcus pneumoniae with immunoglobulin heavy chain variable region (VH), �� light chain (V��), and �� light chain (V��) genes by using human tonsil tissue. Plasmid DNA sequencing showed that single-chain antibodies were complete and constructed correctly. The binding activity of recombinant clones was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), results showed that the binding activity and specificity of anti-S. pneumoniae single-chain fragment variable (scfv) is proved to be successful. The single-chain antibody may be an attractive strategy for tonsillitis etiologic diagnosis and therapy.

Pyroptosis is a pattern of programmed cell death that significantly differs from apoptosis and autophagy in terms of cell morphology and function. The process of pyroptosis is characterized predominantly by the formation of gasdermin protein family-mediated membrane perforation, cell collapse, and the release of inflammatory factors, including IL-1β and IL-18. In recent years, with the rise of pyroptosis research, scholars have devoted time to study the mechanism of pyroptosis in kidney-related diseases. Pyroptosis is probably involved in kidney diseases through two pathways: the caspase-1-mediated canonical pathway and the caspase-4/5/11-mediated noncanonical pathway. In addition, some scholars have identified targets for the treatment of kidney-related diseases from the viewpoint of pyroptosis and developed corresponding medicines, which may become a recommendation for prognosis, targeted treatment, and clinical diagnosis of kidney diseases. This paper focuses on the up-to-date advances in the field of pyroptosis, especially on the key pathogenic role of pyroptosis in the development and progression of kidney diseases. It presents a more in-depth understanding of the pathogenesis of kidney diseases and introduces novel therapeutic targets for the prevention and clinical treatment of kidney diseases.

Objective. To investigate if 3D printed guides and preoperative planning can accurately control femoral stem anteversion. Methods. A prospective comparative study was carried out from 2018 to 2020, including 53 patients who underwent hip arthroplasty for femoral neck fracture. The target rotation center of the femoral head is determined by three-dimensional planning. In group A, planning was made by 2D templates. In group B, preoperative 3D planning and 3D printed osteotomy/positioning guides were performed. After the operation, 3D model registration was performed to calculate the accuracy of anteversion restoration. Results. We screened 60 patients and randomized a total of 53 to 2 parallel study arms: 30 patients to the group A (traditional operation) and 23 patients to the group B (3D preoperative planning and 3D printed guide). There were no significant differences in demographic or perioperative data between study groups. The restoration accuracy of group A was 5.42 ° ± 3.65 ° and of group B was 2.32 ° ± 1.89 ° . The number and rate of abnormal cases was 15 (50%) and 2 (8.7%), respectively. Significant statistical differences were found in angle change, restoration accuracy, and number of abnormal cases. Conclusion. Three-dimensional preoperative planning and 3D printed guides can improve the accuracy of the restoration of femoral anteversion during hip arthroplasty.

Objective Hip pain arising from implant instability is generally caused by repetitive stress injury, which subsequently leads to induction or exacerbation of abnormal metabolism of bone around the implant. single photon emission tomography/computed tomography (SPECT-CT) has advantages in localizing areas of increased tracer uptake that reflects such abnormal bone metabolism. Therefore, we investigated whether the application of SPECT/CT with stress analysis can be an effective practice in evaluating the instability of stem in noncemented hip arthroplasty or not. Method In total 16 patients were collected for unexplained painful hip arthroplasties. When physical examination and blood tests were unremarkable, radiographs were inconclusive and bone scan indicated increased scintigraphic uptake at the proximal part and at the tip of the stem; SPECT/CT was performed. Stem stability was assessed by measuring whether there was consistency between the increased scintigraphic uptake and the direction of the stress around the implant along with the location of the prosthesis. Result Among the 16 symptomatic hips, 9 hips showed the stability of the stem, 3 hips showed the stem instability and 4 hips showed the acetabular loosening with the stem stability. With the application of SPECT/CT with stress analysis, 15 out of 16 (93.7%) cases were found to have the change in the diagnoses, and managements were implemented in 11 out of 16 (68.7%) cases. When comparing before and after SPECT/CT, there was no significant association in clinical diagnosis and management (Pearson chi- square test = 4.61 and 1.33, P = 0.33 and 0.25). Conclusion SPECT/CT combined with stress analysis can be a useful tool in early diagnosis of stem instability and can assist surgeons in subsequent management and decision implementation when other radiographic imagings are inconclusive.

Objective: To give an overview of the Ortner’s syndrome caused by an aortic arch aneurysm. Methods: By comprehensive retrieval of the pertinent literature published in the past two decades, 75 reports including 86 patients were collected and recruited into this study along with a recent case of our own. Results: The aortic arch aneurysms causing hoarseness were most commonly mycotic aneurysms. In this patient setting, in addition to the left recurrent laryngeal nerve, trachea was the most commonly affected structure by the aortic arch aneurysm. Surgical/interventional/hybrid treatments led to a hoarseness-relieving rate of 64.3%, much higher than that of patients receiving conservative treatment. However, hoarseness recovery took longer time in the surgically treated patients than in the interventionally treated patients. Conclusion: The surgical and interventional treatments offered similar hoarseness-relieving effects. Surgical or interventional treatment is warranted in such patients for both treatment of arch aneurysms and relief of hoarseness.

Objective. To develop and validate a risk assessment model for the prediction of the acute exacerbation of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (AE-IPF) in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Methods. We enrolled a total of 110 patients with IPF, hospitalized or treated as outpatients at Xuzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine from July 2012 to July 2020. Of these, 78 and 32 patients were randomly assigned to training and test groups, respectively. The risk factors for AE-IPF were analyzed using logistic regression analysis, and a nomographic model was constructed. The accuracy, degree of calibration, and clinical usefulness of the model were assessed with the consistency index (C-index), calibration diagram, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Finally, the stability of the model was tested using internal validation. Results. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that a history of occupational exposure, diabetes mellitus (DM), essential hypertension (EH), and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO)% predicted were independent risk factors for AE-IPF prediction. The nomographic model was constructed based on these independent risk factors, and the C-index was 0.80. The C-index for the internal validation was 0.75, suggesting that the model had good accuracy. The decision curve indicated that for a threshold value of 0.04–0.66, greater clinical benefit was obtained with the AE-IPF risk prediction model. Conclusion. A customized AE-IPF prediction model based on a history of occupational exposure, DM, EH, and DLCO% predicted provided a reference for the clinical prediction of AE-IPF.

To examine knee flexion range-of-motion, quadriceps strength, and knee self-efficacy trajectory curves over 6 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), stratified by patients' Month-6 sports activity level.Prospective longitudinal study.Hospital outpatient physiotherapy department.595 individuals after unilateral ACLR (mean age, 27 years).At 2-, 3-, and 6-months post-surgery, knee flexion range-of-motion, quadriceps strength, and self-efficacy were quantified. Flexion range-of-motion was additionally measured at 2- and 4-weeks post-surgery. Sports activity levels were assessed using the Tegner Activity Score at 6-months post ACLR.The various measures improved nonlinearly over time, with substantial improvements observed in the first 2-4 months post-surgery. In multivariable generalized least squares models, greater knee flexion range-of-motion, quadriceps strength, and self-efficacy over time were significantly associated with higher Month-6 Tegner levels (all P values 0.01). Additionally, receiving a bone-patellar-tendon-bone graft or meniscal repair was associated with lower quadriceps strength trajectories (P-values0.001) while female sex was associated with lower knee self-efficacy trajectories (P = 0.02).Greater knee flexion range-of-motion, quadriceps strength, and self-efficacy were associated with higher Month-6 Tegner levels. The derived trajectory curves may be useful for effective management decision making and adequate results interpretation during the rehabilitation process.

This study investigates the risk factors for severe hypoglycemia among Southeast Asian T2DM patients.Insulin-treated T2DM patients greater than 65 years old with HbA1c 8% were recruited. They completed questionnaires detailing their experience of hypoglycemia and presence of impaired hypoglycemia awareness (IAH). Data on insulin treatment regimens, glycated haemoglobin (Hba1c) and comorbidities were also collected.Of the 92 participants, 15.2% had at least one episode of severe hypoglycemia over the past year. Comparison between both groups showed that patients with severe hypoglycemia had lower Hba1c, higher Gold score (3.9 ± 1.9 vs. 2.5 ± 1.4; p .05) and higher Hypoglycemia Fear Survey (HFS) worry score (39.1 ± 14.3 vs. 31.8 ± 11.8; p .05). There were no significant differences in duration of diabetes and insulin treatment, treatment regimens and diabetes associated comorbidities except peripheral vascular disease. Furthermore, no significant differences were noted in HFS behavior score, hypoglycemia risk modifying behavior and social economic status.Patients with severe hypoglycemia had tighter glycemic control, greater IAH and higher worry scores regardless of treatment regimens. Clinicians may play a significant role in tightening glycemic control and influencing the risk of severe hypoglycemia. Standard structured diabetes education may help reduce the risk of severe hypoglycemia among this group of patients.

The incidence and mortality of cancer continue to grow since the current medical treatments often fail to produce a complete and durable tumor response and ultimately give rise to therapy resistance and tumor relapse. Heterocycles with potential therapeutic values are of great pharmacological importance, and among them, indazole moiety is a privileged structure in medicinal chemistry. Indazole compounds possess potential anticancer activity, and indazole-based agents such as, axitinib, lonidamine and pazopanib have already been employed for cancer therapy, demonstrating indazole compounds as useful templates for the development of novel anticancer agents. The aim of this review is to present the main aspects of exploring anticancer properties, such as the structural modifications, the structure-activity relationship and mechanisms of action, making an effort to highlight the importance and therapeutic potential of the indazole compounds in the present anticancer agents.

Objective. Unstable pertrochanteric fractures are usually treated with internal fixation, and the integrity of the anteromedial cortex is an important factor for stability and healing. In this study, we described and analyzed the three-dimensional mapping technology and morphological characteristics of pertrochanteric fractures. Methods. Fifty-nine pertrochanteric fractures (OTA/AO 2007 types 31A2) were retrospectively reviewed. Computed tomographic (CT) images for all fractures were superimposed on a standard template. Medial wall integrity was analyzed, and three-dimensional fracture maps were created. Results. Pertrochanteric fractures always have a posterior defect in the medial cortex. The mean width of the defect, in our study, was 21.5 mm (SD: 6.1 mm, range: 10–40 mm), 56.3% (SD: 13.7%, range: 27.5-100%). Bone segments that contact by the anteromedial cortex were 16.5 mm (SD: 5.3 mm, range: 0-29 mm). Conclusion. The integrity of the anteromedial cortex should be considered during internal fixation of femoral trochanteric fractures. These morphological characteristics could be used to form postoperative cortical contact and improve stability of the fixation. Three-dimensional mapping technology can help establish a typical fracture model, thereby improving doctors’ understanding of fracture characteristics.

Objective This study was performed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of ultrasound-guided transforaminal nerve block in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. Methods Sixty patients who underwent treatment for protrusion of a lumbar intervertebral disc in Wangjing Hospital from January 2016 to December 2017 were divided into the study group and the control group. The visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores, the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores of the lumbar vertebra, PRI (pain rating index), and PPI (present pain intensity) were recorded at 30 minutes, 1 week, and 3 months after the operation. Results There were significant differences in the VAS, JOA, PRI, and PPI scores between the study group and control group. Conclusion Ultrasound guidance can improve the efficacy and safety of transforaminal nerve block in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation and shorten the operative duration.
