In this work, we analyze the cosmological model in which the expansion is driven by a classical, free Klein-Gordon field on a flat, four-dimensional Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker spacetime. The model allows for arbitrary mass, non-zero cosmological constant and coupling to curvature. We find that there are strong restrictions to the parameter space, due to the requirement for the reality of the field values. At early cosmological times, we observe Big Bang singularities, solutions where the scale factor asymptotically approaches zero, and Small Bangs. The latter are solutions for which the Hubble parameter diverges at a finite value of the scale factor. They appear generically in our model for certain curvature couplings. An early inflationary era is observed for a specific value of the curvature coupling without further assumptions (unlike in many other inflationary models). A late-time Dark Energy period is present for all solutions with positive cosmological constant, numerically suggesting that a "cosmic no-hair" theorem holds under more general assumptions than the original Wald version which relies on classical energy conditions. The classical fields in consideration can be viewed as resembling one-point functions of a semiclassical model, in which the cosmological expansion is driven by a quantum field., Comment: 48 pages, 13 figures

Exponentially expanding space-times play a central role in contemporary cosmology, most importantly in the theory of inflation and in the Dark Energy driven expansion in the late universe. In this work, we give a complete list of de Sitter solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equation (SCE), where classical gravity is coupled to the expected value of a renormalized stress-energy tensor of a free quantum field in the Bunch-Davies state. To achieve this, we explicitly determine the stress-energy tensor associated with the Bunch-Davies state using the recently proposed `moment approach' on the cosmological coordinate patch of de Sitter space. From the energy component of the SCE we thus obtain an analytic consistency equation for the model's parameters which has to be fulfilled by solutions to the SCE. Using this equation we then investigate the number of solutions and the structure of the solution set in dependency on the coupling parameter of the quantum field to the scalar curvature and renormalization constants using analytic arguments in combination with numerical evidence. We also identify parameter sets where multiple expansion rates separated by several orders of magnitude are possible. Potentially for such parameter settings, a fast (semi-stable) expansion in the early universe could be compatible with a late time `Dark Energy-like' behavior of the universe., Comment: 82 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables

We consider the Wheeler-DeWitt operator associated with the bosonic part of the Hamiltonian of D=11 supergravity in a formulation with only the spatial components of the three-form and six-form fields, and compare it with the E10 Casimir operator at low levels, to show that these two operators precisely match modulo spatial gradients up to and including gl(10) level two. The uniqueness of the E10 Casimir operator eliminates all ordering ambiguities in the quantum Hamiltonian, at least up to the level considered. Beyond level three the two operators are expected to start to differ from each other, as they do so for the classical expressions. We then consider truncations of the E10 Wheeler-DeWitt operator for various finite-dimensional subgroups of E10 in order to exhibit the automorphic properties of the associated wave functions and to show that physically sensible wave functions generically vanish at the cosmological singularity, thus providing new and more sophisticated examples of DeWitt's proposed mechanism for singularity resolution in quantum gravity. Our construction provides novel perspectives on several unresolved conceptual issues with the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, such as the question of observables in quantum gravity, or the issue of emergent space and time in a purely algebraic framework. This article presents numerical work on a special case of the cosmological semiclassical Einstein equation (SCE). The SCE describes the interaction of relativistic quantum matter by the expected value of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a quantum field with classical gravity. Here we consider a free massless scalar field with general (not necessarily conformal) coupling to curvature. In a cosmological scenario with flat spatial sections for special choices of the initial conditions, we observe a separation of the dynamics of the quantum degrees of freedom from the dynamics of the scale factor, which extends a classical result by Starobinsky to general coupling. For this new equation of fourth order for the dynamics of the scale factor, we study numerical solutions. Typical solutions show a radiation-like Big Bang for the early universe and de Sitter-like expansion for the late universe. We discuss a specific solution to the cosmological horizon problem that can be produced by tuning parameters in the given equation. Although the model proposed here only contains massless matter, we give a preliminary comparison of the obtained cosmology with the $\Lambda$CDM standard model of cosmology and investigate parameter ranges in which the new models to a certain extent assimilates standard cosmology., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures

After a brief review of current scenarios for the resolution and/or avoidance of the Big Bang, an alternative hypothesis is put forward implying an infinite increase in complexity towards the initial singularity. This may result in an effective non-calculability which would present an obstruction to actually reaching the beginning of time. This proposal is motivated by the appearance of certain infinite-dimensional duality symmetries of indefinite Kac--Moody type in attempts to unify gravity with the fundamental matter interactions, and deeply rooted in properties of Einstein's theory., Comment: Revised version: minor additions and clarifications; references added

Building on the insight that primordial black holes can arise from the formation and subsequent gravitational collapse of bound states of stable supermassive elementary particles during the early radiation era, we offer a comprehensive picture describing the evolution and growth of the resulting mini-black holes through both the radiation and matter dominated phases, until the onset of (small scale) inhomogeneities. This is achieved by means of an exact metric solving Einstein's equations throughout both phases. We show that, thanks to a special enhancement effect producing an effective horizon above the actual event horizon, this process can explain the observed mass values of the earliest giant black holes. Unlike other proposals, it also predicts a lower limit on the mass of supermassive black holes.

We compute the Kaluza-Klein spectrum of the non-supersymmetric SO(3)$\,\times\,$SO(3)-invariant AdS$_4$ vacuum of 11-dimensional supergravity, whose lowest-lying Kaluza-Klein modes belong to a consistent truncation to 4-dimensional ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity and are stable. We show that, nonetheless, the higher Kaluza-Klein modes become tachyonic so that this non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacuum is perturbatively unstable within 11-dimensional supergravity. This represents the first example of unstable higher Kaluza-Klein modes and provides further evidence for the AdS swampland conjecture, which states that there are no stable non-supersymmetric AdS vacua within string theory. We also find 27 infinitesimal moduli amongst the Kaluza-Klein modes, which hints at the existence of a family of non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ vacua., Comment: 22 pages; v2 published version with minor changes

We investigate the phase diagram of quantum gravity with a vertex expansion about constantly-curved backgrounds. The graviton two- and three-point function are evaluated with a spectral sum on a sphere. We obtain, for the first time, curvature-dependent UV fixed point functions of the dynamical fluctuation couplings $g^*(R)$, $\mu^*(R)$, and $\lambda_3^*(R)$, and the background $f(R)$-potential. Based on these fixed point functions we compute solutions to the quantum and the background equation of motion with and without Standard Model matter. We study the asymptotic safety conjecture for quantum gravity in the presence of matter fields. A general line of reasoning is put forward explaining why gravitons dominate the high-energy behaviour, largely independently of the matter fields as long as these remain sufficiently weakly coupled. Our considerations are put to work for gravity coupled to Yang-Mills theories with the help of the functional renormalisation group. In an expansion about flat backgrounds, explicit results for beta functions, fixed points, universal exponents, and scaling solutions are given in systematic approximations exploiting running propagators, vertices, and background couplings. Invariably, we find that the gauge coupling becomes asymptotically free while the gravitational sector becomes asymptotically safe. The dependence on matter field multiplicities is weak. We also explain how the scheme dependence, which is more pronounced, can be handled without changing the physics. Our findings offer a new interpretation of many earlier results, which is explained in detail. The results generalise to theories with minimally coupled scalar and fermionic matter. The gauge dependence of the conformal anomaly for spin 3/2 and spin 2 fields in non-conformal supergravities has been a long standing puzzle. In this Letter we argue that the `correct' gauge choice is the one that follows from requiring all terms that would imply a violation of the Wess-Zumino consistency condition to be absent in the counterterm, because otherwise the usual link between the anomaly and the one-loop divergence becomes invalid. Remarkably, the `good' choice of gauge is the one that confirms our previous result that a complete cancellation of conformal anomalies in D=4 can only be achieved for N-extended (Poincar\'e) supergravities with $N\geq 5$.

We explore whether perturbative interacting fixed points in matter systems can persist under the impact of quantum gravity. We first focus on semi-simple gauge theories and show that the leading order gravity contribution evaluated within the functional Renormalization Group framework preserves the perturbative fixed-point structure in these models discovered in [1]. We highlight that the quantum-gravity contribution alters the scaling dimension of the gauge coupling, such that the system exhibits an effective dimensional reduction. We secondly explore the effect of metric fluctuations on asymptotically safe gauge-Yukawa systems which feature an asymptotically safe fixed point [2]. The same effective dimensional reduction that takes effect in pure gauge theories also impacts gauge-Yukawa systems. There, it appears to lead to a split of the degenerate free fixed point into an interacting infrared attractive fixed point and a partially ultraviolet attractive free fixed point. The quantum-gravity induced infrared fixed point moves towards the asymptotically safe fixed point of the matter system, and annihilates it at a critical value of the gravity coupling. We explore whether quantum gravity effects within the asymptotic safety paradigm can provide a predictive ultraviolet completion for Abelian gauge theories. We evaluate the effect of quantum gravity fluctuations on the running couplings in the gauge sector and discover an asymptotically safe fixed point of the Renormalization Group. In particular, if the strength of gravitational interactions remains below a critical strength, the minimal gauge coupling becomes asymptotically free. For a certain type of modified dispersion relations, the vacuum quantum state for very short wavelength cosmological perturbations is scale-invariant and it has been suggested that this may be the source of the scale-invariance observed in the temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background. We point out that for this scenario to be possible, it is necessary to redshift these short wavelength modes to cosmological scales in such a way that the scale-invariance is not lost. This requires non-trivial background dynamics before the onset of standard radiation-dominated cosmology; we demonstrate that one possible solution is inflation with a sufficiently large Hubble rate, for this slow roll is not necessary. In addition, we also show that if the slow-roll condition is added to inflation with a large Hubble rate, then for any power law modified dispersion relation quantum vacuum fluctuations become nearly scale-invariant when they exit the Hubble radius., Comment: 9 pages. v2: Clarifications and references added

We argue that the presence of conformal anomalies in gravitational theories can lead to observable modifications to Einstein's equations via the induced anomalous effective actions, whose non-localities can overwhelm the smallness of the Planck scale. The fact that no such effects have been seen in recent cosmological or gravitational wave observations therefore imposes strong restrictions on the field content of possible extensions of Einstein's theory: all viable theories should have vanishing conformal anomalies. We then show that a complete cancellation of conformal anomalies in D=4 for both the $C^2$ invariant and the Euler (Gauss-Bonnet) invariant can only be achieved for N-extended supergravities with $N \geq 5$, as well as for M theory compactified to four dimensions., Comment: 4 pages

We investigate the ultraviolet behaviour of quantum gravity within a functional renormalisation group approach. The present setup includes the full ghost and graviton propagators and, for the first time, the dynamical graviton three-point function. The latter gives access to the coupling of dynamical gravitons and makes the system minimally self-consistent. The resulting phase diagram confirms the asymptotic safety scenario in quantum gravity with a non-trivial UV fixed point. A well-defined Wilsonian block spinning requires locality of the flow in momentum space. This property is discussed in the context of functional renormalisation group flows. We show that momentum locality of graviton correlation functions is non-trivially linked to diffeomorphism invariance, and is realised in the present setup., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We address the issue of precisely estimating small parameters encoded in a general linear transformation of the modes of a bosonic quantum field. Such Bogoliubov transformations frequently appear in the context of quantum optics. We provide a set of instructions for computing the quantum Fisher information for arbitrary pure initial states. We show that the maximally achievable precision of estimation is inversely proportional to the squared average particle number and that such Heisenberg scaling requires non-classical, but not necessarily entangled states. A coset model based on the hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra E10 has been conjectured to underly eleven-dimensional supergravity and M theory. In this note we study the canonical structure of the bosonic model for finite- and infinite-dimensional groups. In the case of finite-dimensional groups like GL(n) we exhibit a convenient set of variables with Borel-type canonical brackets. The generalisation to the Kac-Moody case requires a proper treatment of the imaginary roots that remains elusive. As a second result, we show that the supersymmetry constraint of D=11 supergravity can be rewritten in a suggestive way using E10 algebra data. Combined with the canonical structure, this rewriting explains the previously observed association of the canonical constraints with null roots of E10. We also exhibit a basic incompatibility between local supersymmetry and the K(E10) `R symmetry', that can be traced back to the presence of imaginary roots and to the unfaithfulness of the spinor representations occurring in the present formulation of the E10 worldline model, and that may require a novel type of bosonisation/fermionisation for its resolution. We construct a new SO(3)$\times$SO(3) invariant non-supersymmetric solution of the bosonic field equations of $D=11$ supergravity from the corresponding stationary point of maximal gauged $N=8$ supergravity by making use of the non-linear uplift formulae for the metric and the 3-form potential. The latter are crucial as this solution appears to be inaccessible to traditional techniques of solving Einstein's field equations, and is arguably the most complicated closed form solution of this type ever found. The solution is also a promising candidate for a stable non-supersymmetric solution of M-theory uplifted from gauged supergravity. We study four-dimensional quantum gravity using non-perturbative renormalization group methods. We solve the corresponding equations for the fully momentum-dependent propagator, Newton's coupling and the cosmological constant. For the first time, we obtain a global phase diagram where the non-Gaussian ultraviolet fixed point of asymptotic safety is connected via smooth trajectories to a classical infrared fixed point. A central aim of relativistic quantum information (RQI) is the investigation of quantum information tasks and resources taking into account the relativistic aspects of nature. More precisely, it is of fundamental interest to understand how the storage, manipulation, and transmission of information utilizing quantum systems are influenced by the fact that these processes take place in a relativistic spacetime. In particular, many studies in RQI have been focused on the effects of non-uniform motion on entanglement, the main resource of quantum information protocols. Early investigations in this direction were performed in highly idealized settings that prompted questions as to the practical accessibility of these results. To overcome these limitations it is necessary to consider quantum systems that are in principle accessible to localized observers. In this thesis we present such a model, the rigid relativistic cavity, and its extensions, focusing on the effects of motion on entanglement and applications such as quantum teleportation. We study cavities in (1+1) dimensions undergoing non-uniform motion, consisting of segments of uniform acceleration and inertial motion of arbitrary duration that allow the involved velocities to become relativistic. The transitions between segments can be sharp or smooth and higher dimensions can be incorporated. The primary focus lies in the Bogoliubov transformations of the quantum fields, real scalar fields or Dirac fields, confined to the cavities. The Bogoliubov transformations change the particle content and the occupation of the energy levels of the cavity. We show how these effects generate entanglement between the modes of the quantum fields inside a single cavity for various initial states. We analyse quantised scalar, spinor and photon fields in a mechanically rigid cavity that is accelerated in Minkowski spacetime, in a recently-introduced perturbative small acceleration formalism that allows the velocities to become relativistic, with a view to applications in relativistic quantum information. A scalar field is analysed with both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, and a photon field under perfect conductor boundary conditions is shown to decompose into Dirichlet-like and Neumann-like polarisation modes. The Dirac spinor is analysed with a nonvanishing mass and with dimensions transverse to the acceleration, and the MIT bag boundary condition is shown to exclude zero modes. Unitarity of time evolution holds for smooth accelerations but fails for discontinuous accelerations in spacetime dimensions (3+1) and higher. As an application, the experimental desktop mode-mixing scenario proposed for a scalar field by Bruschi et al. [New J. We investigate the possibility to generate quantum-correlated quasi-particles utilizing analogue gravity systems. The quantumness of these correlations is a key aspect of analogue gravity effects and their presence allows for a clear separation between classical and quantum analogue gravity effects. However, experiments in analogue systems, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, and shallow water waves, are always conducted at non-ideal conditions, in particular, one is dealing with dispersive media at nonzero temperatures. We analyze the influence of the initial temperature on the entanglement generation in analogue gravity phenomena. We lay out all the necessary steps to calculate the entanglement generated between quasi-particle modes and we analytically derive an upper bound on the maximal temperature at which given modes can still be entangled. We further investigate a mechanism to enhance the quantum correlations. We study the effects of relativistic motion on quantum teleportation and propose a realizable experiment where our results can be tested. We compute bounds on the optimal fidelity of teleportation when one of the observers undergoes non-uniform motion for a finite time. The upper bound to the optimal fidelity is degraded due to the observer's motion however, we discuss how this degradation can be corrected. These effects are observable for experimental parameters that are within reach of cutting-edge superconducting technology. The phase diagram of four-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert gravity is studied using Wilson's renormalization group. Smooth trajectories connecting the ultraviolet fixed point at short distances with attractive infrared fixed points at long distances are derived from the non-perturbative graviton propagator. We demonstrate the presence of genuine multipartite entanglement between the modes of quantum fields in non-uniformly moving cavities. The transformations generated by the cavity motion can be considered as multipartite quantum gates. We present two setups for which multi-mode entanglement can be generated for bosons and fermions. As a highlight we show that the bosonic genuine multipartite correlations can be resonantly enhanced. We present a general, analytic recipe to compute the entanglement that is generated between arbitrary, discrete modes of bosonic quantum fields by Bogoliubov transformations. Our setup allows the complete characterization of the quantum correlations in all Gaussian field states. Additionally, it holds for all Bogoliubov transformations. These are commonly applied in quantum optics for the description of squeezing operations, relate the mode decompositions of observers in different regions of curved spacetimes, and describe observers moving along non-stationary trajectories. We focus on a quantum optical example in a cavity quantum electrodynamics setting: an uncharged scalar field within a cavity provides a model for an optical resonator, in which entanglement is created by non-uniform acceleration. We show that the amount of generated entanglement can be magnified by initial single-mode squeezing, for which we provide an explicit formula. We demonstrate entanglement generation between mode pairs of a quantum field in a nonuniformly accelerated cavity in Minkowski space-time. The effect is sensitive to the initial state, the choice of the mode pair and bosonic versus fermionic statistics, and it can be stronger by orders of magnitude than the entanglement degradation between a nonuniformly accelerated cavity and an inertial cavity. Detailed results are obtained for massless scalar and spinor fields in (1+1) dimensions. We analyse the entanglement and the non-locality of a (1+1)-dimensional massless Dirac field confined to a cavity on a worldtube that consists of inertial and uniformly accelerated segments, for small accelerations but arbitrarily long travel times. The correlations between the accelerated field modes and the modes in an inertial reference cavity are periodic in the durations of the individual trajectory segments, and degradation of the correlations can be entirely avoided by fine-tuning the individual or relative durations of the segments. Analytic results for selected trajectories are presented. We analyze the operational meaning of the residual entanglement in non-inertial fermionic systems in terms of the achievable violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality. We demonstrate that the quantum correlations of fermions, which were previously found to survive in the infinite acceleration limit, cannot be considered to be non-local. The entanglement shared by an inertial and an accelerated observer cannot be utilized for the violation of the CHSH inequality in case of high accelerations. We describe the spin and momentum degrees of freedom of a system of two massive spin--$\tfrac{1}{2}$ particles as a 4 qubit system. Then we explicitly show how the entanglement changes between different partitions of the qubits, when considered by different inertial observers. Although the two particle entanglement corresponding to a partition into Alice's and Bob's subsystems is, as often stated in the literature, invariant under Lorentz boosts, the entanglement with respect to other partitions of the Hilbert space on the other hand, is not. It certainly does depend on the chosen inertial frame and on the initial state considered. The change of entanglement arises, because a Lorentz boost on the momenta of the particles causes a Wigner rotation of the spin, which in certain cases entangles the spin- with the momentum states. We systematically investigate the situation for different classes of initial spin states and different partitions of the 4 qubit space. Furthermore, we study the behavior of Bell inequalities for different observers and demonstrate how the maximally possible degree of violation, using the Pauli-Lubanski spin observable, can be recovered by any inertial observer., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

In the conjectured correspondence between supergravity and geodesic models on infinite-dimensional hyperbolic coset spaces, and E10/K(E10) in particular, the constraints play a central role. We present a Sugawara-type construction in terms of the E10 Noether charges that extends these constraints infinitely into the hyperbolic algebra, in contrast to the truncated expressions obtained in arXiv:0709.2691 that involved only finitely many generators. Our extended constraints are associated to an infinite set of roots which are all imaginary, and in fact fill the closed past light-cone of the Lorentzian root lattice. The construction makes crucial use of the E10 Weyl group and of the fact that the E10 model contains both D=11 supergravity and D=10 IIB supergravity. Our extended constraints appear to unite in a remarkable manner the different canonical constraints of these two theories. This construction may also shed new light on the issue of `open constraint algebras' in traditional canonical approaches to gravity., Comment: 49 pages

The mini-superspace quantization of D=11 supergravity is equivalent to the quantization of a E10/K(E10) coset space sigma model, when the latter is restricted to the E10 Cartan subalgebra. As a consequence, the wavefunctions solving the relevant mini-superspace Wheeler-DeWitt equation involve automorphic (Maass wave) forms under the modular group W^+(E10)=PSL(2,O). Using Dirichlet boundary conditions on the billiard domain a general inequality for the Laplace eigenvalues of these automorphic forms is derived, entailing a wave function of the universe that is generically complex and always tends to zero when approaching the initial singularity. The significance of these properties for the nature of singularities in quantum cosmology in comparison with other approaches is discussed. D=11 Supergravity near a space-like singularity admits a cosmological billiard description based on the hyperbolic Kac-Moody group E10. The quantization of this system via the supersymmetry constraint is shown to lead to wavefunctions involving automorphic (Maass wave) forms under the modular group W^+(E10)=PSL(2,O) with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the billiard domain. Generalising expressions given by Komar, we give precise definitions of gravitational mass and solitonic NUT charge and we apply these to the description of a class of Minkowski-signature multi-Taub-NUT solutions without rod singularities. We construct an infinite E9 multiplet of BPS states for 11D supergravity. For each positive real root of E9 we obtain a BPS solution of 11D supergravity, or of its exotic counterparts, depending on two non-compact transverse space variables. All these solutions are related by U-dualities realised via E9 Weyl transformations in the regular embedding of E9 in E10, E10 in E11. In this way we recover the basic BPS solutions, namely the KK-wave, the M2 brane, the M5 brane and the KK6-monopole, as well as other solutions admitting eight longitudinal space dimensions. A novel technique of combining Weyl reflexions with compensating transformations allows the construction of many new BPS solutions, each of which can be mapped to a solution of a dual effective action of gravity coupled to a certain higher rank tensor field. For real roots of E10 which are not roots of E9, we obtain additional BPS solutions transcending 11D supergravity (as exemplified by the lowest level solution corresponding to the M9 brane). The relation between the dual formulation and the one in terms of the original 11D supergravity fields has significance beyond the realm of BPS solutions. We establish the link with the Geroch group of general relativity, and explain how the E9 duality transformations generalize the standard Hodge dualities to an infinite set of `non-closing dualities'., Comment: 76 pages, 6 figures

We construct simple exact solutions to the E10/K(E10) coset model by exploiting its integrability. Using the known correspondences with the bosonic sectors of maximal supergravity theories, these exact solutions translate into exact cosmological solutions. In this way, we are able to recover some recently discovered solutions of M-theory exhibiting phases of accelerated expansion, or, equivalently, S-brane solutions, and thereby accommodate such solutions within the E10/K(E10) model. We study the indefinite Kac-Moody algebras AE(n), arising in the reduction of Einstein's theory from (n+1) space-time dimensions to one (time) dimension, and their distinguished maximal regular subalgebras sl(n) and affine A_{n-2}^{(1)}. The interplay between these two subalgebras is used, for n=3, to determine the commutation relations of the `gradient generators' within AE(3). The low level truncation of the geodesic sigma-model over the coset space AE(n)/K(AE(n)) is shown to map to a suitably truncated version of the SL(n)/SO(n) non-linear sigma-model resulting from the reduction Einstein's equations in (n+1) dimensions to (1+1) dimensions. A further truncation to diagonal solutions can be exploited to define a one-to-one correspondence between such solutions, and null geodesic trajectories on the infinite-dimensional coset space H/K(H), where H is the (extended) Heisenberg group, and K(H) its maximal compact subgroup. It has been conjectured that the classical dynamics of M theory is equivalent to a null geodesic motion in the infinite-dimensional coset space E10/K(E10) where K(E10) is the maximal compact subgroup of the hyperbolic Kac-Moody group E10. We here provide further evidence for this conjecture by showing that the leading higher order corrections, quartic in the curvature and related three-form dependent terms, correspond to negative imaginary roots of E10. The conjecture entails certain predictions for which higher order corrections are allowed: in particular corrections of type R^M (DF)^N are compatible with E10 only for M+N=3k+1. Furthermore, the leading parts of the R^4, R^7,... terms are predicted to be associated with singlets under the SL(10) decomposition of E10. Although singlets are extremely rare among the altogether 4,400,752,653 representations of SL(10) appearing in E10 up to level l \leq 28, there are indeed singlets at levels l=10 and l =20 which do match with the R^4 and the expected R^7 corrections. Our analysis indicates a far more complicated behavior of the theory near the cosmological singularity than suggested by the standard homogeneous ans\"atze., Comment: 45 pages, 1 figure

We review aspects of loop quantum gravity in a pedagogical manner, with the aim of enabling a precise but critical assessment of its achievements so far. We emphasise that the off-shell (`strong') closure of the constraint algebra is a crucial test of quantum space-time covariance, and thereby of the consistency, of the theory. Special attention is paid to the appearance of a large number of ambiguities, in particular in the formulation of the Hamiltonian constraint. It is shown in detail that the dynamics of the Einstein-dilaton-p-form system in the vicinity of a spacelike singularity can be asymptotically described, at a generic spatial point, as a billiard motion in a region of Lobachevskii space (realized as an hyperboloid in the space of logarithmic scale factors). This is done within the Hamiltonian formalism, and for an arbitrary number of spacetime dimensions $D \geq 4$. A key role in the derivation is played by the Iwasawa decomposition of the spatial metric, and by the fact that the off-diagonal degrees of freedom, as well as the p-form degrees of freedom, get ``asymptotically frozen'' in this description. For those models admitting a Kac-Moody theoretic interpretation of the billiard dynamics we outline how to set up an asymptotically equivalent description in terms of a one-dimensional non-linear sigma-model formally invariant under the corresponding Kac-Moody group., Comment: 88 pages

A formal ``small tension'' expansion of D=11 supergravity near a spacelike singularity is shown to be equivalent, at least up to 30th order in height, to a null geodesic motion in the infinite dimensional coset space E10/K(E10) where K(E10) is the maximal compact subgroup of the hyperbolic Kac-Moody group E10(R). For the proof we make use of a novel decomposition of E10 into irreducible representations of its SL(10,R) subgroup. We explicitly show how to identify the first four rungs of the E10 coset fields with the values of geometric quantities constructed from D=11 supergravity fields and their spatial gradients taken at some comoving spatial point., Comment: 4 pages

Some time ago, it was found that the never-ending oscillatory chaotic behaviour discovered by Belinsky, Khalatnikov and Lifshitz (BKL) for the generic solution of the vacuum Einstein equations in the vicinity of a spacelike ("cosmological") singularity disappears in spacetime dimensions $D= d+1>10$. Recently, a study of the generalization of the BKL chaotic behaviour to the superstring effective Lagrangians has revealed that this chaos is rooted in the structure of the fundamental Weyl chamber of some underlying hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra. In this letter, we show that the same connection applies to pure gravity in any spacetime dimension $\geq 4$, where the relevant algebras are $AE_d$. In this way the disappearance of chaos in pure gravity models in $D > 10$ dimensions becomes linked to the fact that the Kac-Moody algebras $AE_d$ are no longer hyperbolic for $d > 9$., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure

In these lectures we report recent work on the exact quantization of dimensionally reduced gravity, i.e. 2d non-linear (G/H)-coset space sigma-models coupled to gravity and a dilaton. Using methods developed in the context of flat space integrable systems, the Wheeler-DeWitt equations for these models can be reduced to a modified version of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations from conformal field theory, the insertions given by singularities in the spectral parameter plane. This basic result in principle permits the explicit construction of solutions, i.e. physical states of the quantized theory. General Relativity reduced to two dimensions possesses a large group of symmetries that exchange classical solutions. The associated Lie algebra is known to contain the affine Kac-Moody algebra $A_1^{(1)}$ and half of a real Witt algebra. In this paper we exhibit the full symmetry under the semi-direct product of $\Lie{A_1^{(1)}}$ by the Witt algebra $\Lie{\Wir}$. Furthermore we exhibit the corresponding hidden gauge symmetries. We show that the theory can be understood in terms of an infinite dimensional potential space involving all degrees of freedom: the dilaton as well as matter and gravitation. In the dilaton sector the linear system that extends the previously known Lax pair has the form of a twisted self-duality constraint that is the analog of the self-duality constraint arising in extended supergravities in higher spacetime dimensions. Our results furnish a group theoretical explanation for the simultaneous occurrence of two spectral parameters, a constant one ($=y$) and a variable one ($=t$). They hold for all $2d$ non-linear $\sigma$-models that are obtained by dimensional reduction of $G/H$ models in three dimensions coupled to pure gravity. In that case the Lie algebra is $\Lie{\Wir \semi G^{(1)}}$; this symmetry acts on a set of off shell fields (in a fixed gauge) and preserves the equations of motion., Comment: 44 pages, LATEX

This contribution is a review of the method of isomonodromic quantization of dimensionally reduced gravity. Our approach is based on the complete separation of variables in the isomonodromic sector of the model and the related ``two-time" Hamiltonian structure. This allows an exact quantization in the spirit of the scheme developed in the framework of integrable systems. Possible ways to identify a quantum state corresponding to the Kerr black hole are discussed. It is shown that the vacuum Einstein equations for an arbitrary stationary axisymmetric space-time can be completely separated by re-formulating the Ernst equation and its associated linear system in terms of a non-autonomous Schlesinger-type dynamical system. The conformal factor of the metric coincides (up to some explicitly computable factor) with the $\tau$-function of the Ernst equation in the presence of finitely many regular singularities.
