Summary: Genome-scale analysis suggests that the last common ancestor of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and Mycobacterium leprae diverged 36 million years ago, and members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex differentiated 40 000 years ago. Analysis of palaeomicrobiological data from a 17 000-year-old sample from a bison and a 9000-year-old sample from a human being suggested that M tuberculosis preceded Mycobacterium bovis and related species. Whole-genome comparisons show that members of the M tuberculosis complex form a unique bacterial species with distinct ecotypes that are transmissible from any infected mammalian species to several others. Genomic deletions identified several M tuberculosis lineages that could be placed on a phylogeographical map, suggesting adaptation to local host populations. The degrees of transmissibility and virulence vary between M tuberculosis clones, with increased virulence mainly linked to gene loss in regulatory pathways. Such data suggest that most M tuberculosis clones have a restricted spreading capacity between the host population, allowing unpredictable bursts of highly transmissible, virulent, and successful clones, such as the east Asian (Beijing) clone. Advances in genomics have helped the development of molecular techniques for accurate identification of species and clones in the M tuberculosis complex, which is essential for tracing the source of infections. Background: We conducted a comparative genomic study based on a neutral approach to identify genome specificities associated with the virulence capacity of pathogenic bacteria. We also determined whether virulence is dictated by rules, or if it is the result of individual evolutionary histories. We systematically compared the genomes of the 12 most dangerous pandemic bacteria for humans (''bad bugs'') to their closest non-epidemic related species (''controls''). Methodology/Principal Findings: We found several significantly different features in the ''bad bugs'', one of which was a smaller genome that likely resulted from a degraded recombination and repair system. The 10 Cluster of Orthologous Group (COG) functional categories revealed a significantly smaller number of genes in the ''bad bugs'', which lacked mostly transcription, signal transduction mechanisms, cell motility, energy production and conversion, and metabolic and regulatory functions. A few genes were identified as virulence factors, including secretion system proteins. Five ''bad bugs'' showed a greater number of poly (A) tails compared to the controls, whereas an elevated number of poly (A) tails was found to be strongly correlated to a low GC% content. The ''bad bugs'' had fewer tandem repeat sequences compared to controls. Moreover, the results obtained from a principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the ''bad bugs'' had surprisingly more toxin-antitoxin modules than did the controls. Conclusions/Significance: We conclude that pathogenic capacity is not the result of ''virulence factors'' but is the outcome of a virulent gene repertoire resulting from reduced genome repertoires. Amoebae are unicellular phagocytes that feed on microorganisms in their environment. Some amoebae have the largest genome size currently known on earth. They phagocytose any inert particle larger than 0.5 μm. Phagocytic amoebae can harbor different bacteria, fungi and giant viruses within the same cell. There is evidence of lateral gene transfer between the amoeba and its microbiological hosts. There is also evidence of gene exchange between viruses and bacteria hosted in amoebae. Moreover, there is evidence of gene transfer between viruses, such as Mimivirus and the virophage. As a consequence, viruses and intracellular bacteria living in amoebae have a sympatric lifestyle and large chimeric genome repertoires. We conclude that phagocytic protists continuously generate new species with chimeric repertoires that may succeed later if adapted to the environmental conditions and selected in a specific niche. Bacterial strain typing, or identifying bacteria at the strain level, is particularly important for diagnosis, treatment, and epidemiological surveillance of bacterial infections. This is especially the case for bacteria exhibiting high levels of antibiotic resistance or virulence, and those involved in nosocomial or pandemic infections. Strain typing also has applications in studying bacterial population dynamics. Over the last two decades, molecular methods have progressively replaced phenotypic assays to type bacterial strains. In this article, we review the current bacterial genotyping methods and classify them into three main categories: (1) DNA banding pattern-based methods, which classify bacteria according to the size of fragments generated by amplification and/or enzymatic digestion of genomic DNA, (2) DNA sequencing-based methods, which study the polymorphism of DNA sequences, and (3) DNA hybridization-based methods using nucleotidic probes. We described and compared the applications of genotyping methods to the study of bacterial strain diversity. We also discussed the selection of appropriate genotyping methods and the challenges of bacterial strain typing, described the current trends of genotyping methods, and investigated the progresses allowed by the availability of genomic sequences. Francisella tularensis, a Gram-negative cocobacillus responsible for tularemia, especially severe pneumonia, is a facultative intracellular bacterium classified as a biological agent of category A. Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus (APM) is a recently discovered giant virus suspected to be an agent of both community- and hospital-acquired pneumonia. During specificity testing of antibody to APM detection, it was observed that nearly all patients infected by F. tularensis had elevated antibody titers to APM. In the present study, we investigated this cross-reactivity by immunoproteomics. Apart from the detection of antibodies reactive to new immunoreactive proteins in patients infected by F. tularensis, we showed that the sera of those patients recognize specifically two proteins of APM: the capsid protein and another protein of unknown function. No common protein motif can be detected in silico based on genome analysis of the involved protein. Furthermore, this cross-reactivity was confirmed with the recombinant capsid protein expressed in Escherichia coli. This emphasizes the pitfalls of a serological diagnosis of pneumonia. Abstract: Intracellular bacteria survive within eukaryotic host cells and are difficult to kill with certain antibiotics. As a result, antibiotic resistance in intracellular bacteria is becoming commonplace in healthcare institutions. Owing to the lack of methods available for transforming these bacteria, we evaluated the mechanisms of resistance using molecular methods and in silico genome analysis. The objective of this review was to understand the molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance through in silico comparisons of the genomes of obligate and facultative intracellular bacteria. The available data on in vitro mutants reported for intracellular bacteria were also reviewed. These genomic data were analysed to find natural mutations in known target genes involved in antibiotic resistance and to look for the presence or absence of different resistance determinants. Our analysis revealed the presence of tetracycline resistance protein (Tet) in Bartonella quintana, Francisella tularensis and Brucella ovis; moreover, most of the Francisella strains possessed the blaA gene, AmpG protein and metallo-β-lactamase family protein. The presence or absence of folP (dihydropteroate synthase) and folA (dihydrofolate reductase) genes in the genome could explain natural resistance to co-trimoxazole. Finally, multiple genes encoding different efflux pumps were studied. This in silico approach was an effective method for understanding the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in intracellular bacteria. The whole genome sequence analysis will help to predict several important phenotypic characteristics, in particular resistance to different antibiotics. In the future, stable mutants should be obtained through transformation methods in order to demonstrate experimentally the determinants of resistance in intracellular bacteria. We recently reported the discovery and preliminary characterization of Mimivirus, the largest known virus, with a 400-nanometer particle size comparable to mycoplasma. Mimivirus is a double-stranded DNA virus growing in amoebae. We now present its 1, 181, 404-base pair genome sequence, consisting of 1262 putative open reading frames, 10% of which exhibit a similarity to proteins of known functions. In addition to exceptional genome size, Mimivirus exhibits many features that distinguish it from other nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses. The most unexpected is the presence of numerous genes encoding central protein-translation components, including four amino-acyl transfer RNA synthetases, peptide release factor 1, translation elongation factor EF-TU, and translation initiation factor 1. The genome also exhibits six tRNAs. Other notable features include the presence of both type I and type II topoisomerases, components of all DNA repair pathways, many polysaccharide synthesis enzymes, and one inteincontaining gene. The size and complexity of the Mimivirus genome challenge the established frontier between viruses and parasitic cellular organisms. It has now been over a year since SARS-CoV-2 first emerged in China, in December 2019, and it has spread rapidly around the world. Some variants are currently considered of great concern. We aimed to analyze the numbers of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences obtained in different countries worldwide until January 2021. On 28 January 2021, we downloaded the deposited genome sequence origin from the GISAID database, and from the "Our world in data" website we downloaded numbers of SARS-CoV-2-diagnosed cases, numbers of SARS-CoV-2-associated deaths, population size, life expectancy, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, and human development index per country. Files were merged and data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel software. A total of 450,968 SARS-CoV-2 genomes originating from 135 countries on the 5 continents were available. When considering the 19 countries for which the number of genomes per 100 deaths was >100, six were in Europe, while eight were in Asia, three were in Oceania and two were in Africa. Six (30%) of these countries are beyond rank 75, regarding the human development index and four (20%) are beyond rank 80 regarding GDP per capita. Moreover, the comparisons of the number of genomes sequenced per 100 deaths to the human development index by country show that some Western European countries have released similar or lower numbers of genomes than many African or Asian countries with a lower human development index. Previous data highlight great discrepancies between the numbers of available SARS-CoV-2 genomes per 100 cases and deaths and the ranking of countries regarding wealth and development. Background Louse-borne trench fever caused by Bartonella quintana is a neglected public health concern, known to be transmitted from body louse feces via scratching. No viable B. quintana have ever been isolated from head lice before; therefore, their role as a vector is still poorly understood. Methods In Senegal, the implementation of a permanent local surveillance system in a point-of-care laboratory (POC) allows the monitoring of emerging diseases. Here we used culture as well as molecular and genomic approaches to document an outbreak of trench fever associated with head lice in the village of Ndiop. Head lice and blood samples were collected from febrile patients between November 2010 and April 2015. Genomes of 2 isolated strains of B. quintana were sequenced and analyzed. Results A total of 2289 blood samples were collected in the 2010–2015 period. From 2010–2013, B. quintana DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 0.25% (4/1580). In 2014, 228 blood samples were collected, along with 161 head lice from 5 individuals. B. quintana DNA was detected in 4.4% (10/228) of blood samples, and in lice specimens collected from febrile patients (61.7%, 50/81) and non-febrile patients (61.4%, 43/70). Two B. quintana strains were isolated from blood and head lice from 2 different patients. Genomic sequence analysis showed 99.98% overall similarity between both strains. Conclusions The presence of live B. quintana in head lice, and the genetic identity of strains from patients' blood and head lice during a localized outbreak in Senegal, supports the evidence of head lice vectorial capacity. Background: Horizontal transfer plays an important role in the evolution of bacterial genomes, yet it obeys several constraints, including the ecological opportunity to meet other organisms, the presence of transfer systems, and the fitness of the transferred genes. Bacteria from the Planctomyctetes, Verrumicrobia, Chlamydiae (PVC) super-phylum have a compartmentalized cell plan delimited by an intracytoplasmic membrane that might constitute an additional constraint with particular impact on bacterial evolution. In this investigation, we studied the evolution of 33 genomes from PVC species and focused on the rate and the nature of horizontally transferred sequences in relation to their habitat and their cell plan. Results: Using a comparative phylogenomic approach, we showed that habitat influences the evolution of the bacterial genome's content and the flux of horizontal transfer of DNA (HT). Thus bacteria from soil, from insects and ubiquitous bacteria presented the highest average of horizontal transfer compared to bacteria living in water, extracellular bacteria in vertebrates, bacteria from amoeba and intracellular bacteria in vertebrates (with a mean of 379 versus 110 events per species, respectively and 7.6% of each genomes due to HT against 4.8%). The partners of these transfers were mainly bacterial organisms (94.9%); they allowed us to differentiate environmental bacteria, which exchanged more with Proteobacteria, and bacteria from vertebrates, which exchanged more with Firmicutes. The functional analysis of the horizontal transfers revealed a convergent evolution, with an over-representation of genes encoding for membrane biogenesis and lipid metabolism, among compartmentalized bacteria in the different habitats. Conclusions: The presence of an intracytoplasmic membrane in PVC species seems to affect the genome's evolution through the selection of transferred DNA, according to their encoded functions. Background: The PVC super-phylum gathers bacteria from seven phyla (Planctomycetes, Verrucomicrobiae, Chlamydiae, Lentisphaera, Poribacteria, OP3, WWE2) presenting different lifestyles, cell plans and environments. Planctomyces and several Verrucomicrobiae exhibit a complex cell plan, with an intracytoplasmic membrane inducing the compartmentalization of the cytoplasm into two regions (pirellulosome and paryphoplasm). The evolution and function of this cell plan is still subject to debate. In this work, we hypothesized that it could play a role in protection of the bacterial DNA, especially against Horizontal Genes Transfers (HGT). Therefore, 64 bacterial genomes belonging to seven different phyla (whose four PVC phyla) were studied. We reconstructed the evolution of the cell plan as precisely as possible, thanks to information obtained by bibliographic study and electronic microscopy. We used a strategy based on comparative phylogenomic in order to determine the part occupied by the horizontal transfers for each studied genomes. Results: Our results show that the bacteria Simkania negevensis (Chlamydiae) and Coraliomargarita akajimensis (Verrucomicrobiae), whose cell plan were unknown before, are compartmentalized, as we can see on the micrographies. This is one of the first indication of the presence of an intracytoplasmic membrane in a Chlamydiae. The proportion of HGT does not seems to be related to the cell plan of bacteria, suggesting that compartmentalization does not induce a protection of bacterial DNA against HGT. Conversely, lifestyle of bacteria seems to impact the ability of bacteria to exchange genes. Amoebae-resistant microorganisms exhibit a specific lifestyle. Unlike allopatric specialized intracellular pathogens, they have not specialized because they infect the amoebae via amoebal attack and present a sympatric lifestyle with species from different phyla. In this review, we compare the genomes from bacteria ( Legionella pneumophila, Legionella drancourtii, Candidatus‘Protochlamydia amoebophila,’ Rickettsia bellii, Candidatus‘Amoebophilus asiaticus’) and a virus (mimivirus) that multiply naturally in amoebae. The objective is to highlight the genomic traits characterizing these microorganisms and their niche by comparison with other specialized pathogens. The genome of intra-amoebal microorganisms is significantly larger than that of their relatives, contradicting the genome reduction theory mostly accepted for intracellular pathogens. This is probably due to the fact that they are not specialized and therefore maintain their genome size. Moreover, the presence of many horizontally transferred genes and mobilomes in their genomes suggests that these microorganisms acquired genetic material from their neighbors and amoebal host, thus increasing their genome size. Important features involved in gene transfer and pathogenicity were thus acquired. These characteristics suggest that amoebae constitute a gene melting pot, allowing diverse microorganisms to evolve by the same pathway characterized by gene acquisition, and then either adapt to the intra-amoebal lifestyle or create new pathogens. One century after the first description of rickettsiae as human pathogens, the rickettsiosis remained poorly understood diseases. These microorganisms are indeed characterized by a strictly intracellular location which has, for long, prohibited their detailed study. Within the last ten years, the completion of the genome sequences of several strains allowed gaining a better knowledge about the molecular mechanisms involved in rickettsia pathogenicity. Here, we summarized available data concerning the critical steps of rickettsia-host cell interactions that should contribute to tissue injury and diseases, that is, adhesion, phagosomal escape, motility, and intracellular survival of the bacteria. Summary: The availability of genome sequences is revolutionising the fields of bacteriology and infectious diseases. By mid-2007, 479 bacterial genomes from 352 distinct species have been sequenced, including representatives of all notable human pathogens. Additionally, the genomes of several strains from each of 55 species have been sequenced. This tremendous amount of genomic data has led to unprecedented advances in pathogen diagnosis, genotyping, detection of virulence, and detection of resistance to antibiotics. Completion of Tropheryma whipplei genome sequencing may provide insights into the evolution of the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenicity of this microorganism. The first postgenomic application was the successful design of a comprehensive culture medium that allows axenic growth of this bacterium, which is particularly recalcitrant to cultivation. This achievement in turn permitted analysis of T. whipplei RNA without contaminating eukaryotic nucleic acids. To obtain high-quality RNA, several extraction methods were compared, but under all conditions tested an atypical profile was observed. By using a Northern blot assay we demonstrated that an insertion sequence previously described in T. whipplei 23S rRNA is in fact an intervening sequence excised during maturation. This cleavage could involve an RNase III identified in the genome of this microorganism. Among the bacteria with a 23S rRNA insertion sequence, T. whipplei is the only gram-positive microorganism. To date there are thirteen species validly assigned to the genus Anaerococcus. Most of the species in this genus are anaerobic and of human origin. Anaerococcus urinimassiliensis sp. nov., strain Marseille-P2143T is member of family Peptoniphilaceae, which was isolated from the urine of a 17-year-old boy affected by autoimmune hepatitis and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis using the culturomic approach. In the current study, a taxono-genomics method was employed to describe this new species. The strain Marseille-P2143T was gram positive cocci with translucent colonies on blood agar. Its genome was 2,189,509 bp long with a 33.5 mol% G + C content and exhibited 98.48% 16S rRNA similarity with Anaerococcus provencensis strain 9,402,080. When Anaerococcus urinomassiliensis strain Marseill-P2143T is compared with closely related species, the values ranged from 71.23% with A. hydrogenalis strain DSM 7454T (NZ_ABXA01000052.1) to 90.64% with A. provencensis strain 9402080T (NZ_HG003688.1). The body louse is the principal vector of Bartonella quintana, the causative organism of trench fever, but B. quintana DNA has also been detected in adult head lice. Because there are no characteristics that distinguish the body louse from the head louse, we decided to test head louse nits collected from a homeless man for the presence of B. quintana DNA. All of the sampled nits tested positive by real-time PCR, and intergenic spacer region (ITS) gene sequences shared 100% similarity to the corresponding ITS fragment of the genome of B. quintana. Background Etiological diagnosis is a key to therapeutic adaptation and improved prognosis, particularly for infections such as endocarditis. In blood culture–negative endocarditis (BCNE), 22% of cases remain undiagnosed despite an updated comprehensive syndromic approach. This prompted us to develop a new diagnostic approach. Methods Eleven valves from 10 BCNE patients were analyzed using a method that combines human RNA bait-depletion with phi29 DNA polymerase-based multiple displacement amplification and shotgun DNA sequencing. An additional case in which a microbe was serendipitously visualized by immunofluorescence was analyzed using the same method, but after laser capture microdissection. Results Background DNA prevented any diagnosis in cases analyzed without microdissection because the majority of sequences were contaminants. Moraxella sequences were dramatically enriched in the stained microdissected region of the additional case. A consensus genome sequence of 2.4 Mbp covering more than 94% of the Moraxella osloensis KSH reference genome was reconstructed with 234X average coverage. Several antibiotic-resistance genes were observed. Etiological diagnosis was confirmed using Western blot and specific polymerase chain reaction with sequencing on a different valve sample. Conclusions Microdissection could be a key to the metagenomic diagnosis of infectious diseases when a microbe is visualized but remains unidentified despite an updated optimal approach. Strain 6021061333T was isolated from the sputum of 16-year-old girl with cystic fibrosis following a pulmonary exacerbation. This bacterial strain could not be identified by our systematic MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry screening on a MicroFlex. This led to the sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, which shows 97.83% sequence identity with Chryseobacterium kwangjuense strain KJ1R5T, the phylogenetic closely related type strain of a species with standing in nomenclature, which putatively classifies it as a new species. Colonies are yellow, circular and 0.5–1 mm in diameter after cultivation at 28 °C for 24 h on 5% sheep blood-enriched Colombia agar. Growth occurs at temperatures in the range of 28–37 °C (optimally at 28 °C). Strain 6021061333T is Gram-negative, non-motile and strictly aerobic bacillus. It is catalase and oxidase positive. The 4,864,678 bp-long genome, composed of five contigs, has a G+C content of 38.86%. Out of the 4427 predicted genes, 4342 were protein-coding genes and 85 were RNAs. The major fatty acids are branched (13-methyl-tetradecanoic acid and 15-methyl-hexadecenoic acid). Digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) estimation and average nucleotide identity (ANI) of the strain 6021061333T against genomes of the type strains of related species ranged between 23.60 and 50.40% and between 79.31 and 93.06%, respectively. According to our taxonogenomics results, we propose the creation of Chryseobacterium phocaeense sp. nov. that contains the type strain 6021061333T (= CSUR P2660, = CECT 9670). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In the recent years, genomic and pan-genomic studies have become increasingly important. Culturomics allows to study human microbiota through the use of different culture conditions, coupled with a method of rapid identification by MALDI-TOF, or 16S rRNA. Bacterial taxonomy is undergoing many changes as a consequence. With the help of pan-genomic analyses, species can be redefined, and new species definitions generated. Results: Genomics, coupled with culturomics, has led to the discovery of many novel bacterial species or genera, including Akkermansia muciniphila and Microvirga massiliensis. Using the genome to define species has been applied within the genus Klebsiella. A discontinuity or an abrupt break in the core/pan-genome ratio can uncover novel species. Conclusions: Applying genomic and pan-genomic analyses to the reclassification of other bacterial species or genera will be important in the future of medical microbiology. Strain 6021052837T was isolated from the blood culture of a hemodialysis patient on Chocolat PolyViteX medium at 37 °C after 2 days of incubation. Colonies could not be identified by our systematic MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry screening. The16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that the strain had 96% sequence identity with Cohnella formosensis (Genbank accession number JN806384), the phylogenetic closely related type strain of a species with standing in nomenclature, which putatively classifies it as a new species. The colonies cultivated on Columbia agar with 5% sheep blood medium at 37 °C after 24 h of incubation, are white pigmented, their size varied from 1.5 to 2 mm in diameter. Strain 6021052837T is an aerobic, Gram-negative, motile, spore forming rod, which cannot grow microaerophilically or under anaerobic conditions. Strain G4 was isolated from the stool sample of a wild gorilla ( Gorilla gorilla gorilla) from Cameroon. It is a facultative anaerobic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium. This strain exhibits a 16S rRNA nucleotide sequence similarity of 97.48 % with Paenibacillus typhae, the phylogenetically closest species with standing nomenclature. Moreover, the strain G4 presents some phenotypic differences when compared to other Paenibacillus species and shows a low MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry score that does not allow any identification. Thus, it is likely that this strain represents a new species. Here, we describe the characteristics of this organism, complete genome sequence, and annotation. Gemmata massiliana is a new Planctomycetes bacterium isolated from a hospital water network in France, using a new culture medium. It is an aerobic microorganism with optimal growth at pH 8, at 30 °C and salinity ≤ 1.25 % NaCl. G. massiliana is resistant to β-lactam antibiotics, due to lack of peptidoglycan in its cell wall. G. massiliana shares a 97 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the nearest species, Gemmata obscuriglobus; and 99 % similarity with unnamed soil isolates . Its 9,249,437-bp genome consists in one chromosome and no detectable plasmid and has a 64.07 % G + C content, 32.94 % of genes encoding for hypothetical proteins. Strain MS1, a Gram-positive, obligately anaerobic, motile and spore-forming rod belonging to the Clostridium genus, was isolated from the feces of a healthy Polynesian male living in French Polynesia. The temperature range for growth was 30–45 °C. We sequenced its complete genome and studied its phenotypic characteristics. The 3,560,738-bp long genome (one chromosome, no plasmid, G + C content 34%) contained 3535 protein-coding and 70 RNA genes. Strain MS1 exhibited a 98.24% 16S rRNA similarity with Clostridium amylolyticum , the phylogenetically closest species. When compared with other Clostridium species with standing in nomenclature, it had an average genomic similarity of 68.8–70%, a unique MALDI-TOF spectrum, and differed in nitrate reduction, motility and l -arabinose and d -lactose metabolism with most of the closest species. Therefore, strain MS1 is sufficiently distinct from type strains of the genus Clostridium to represent a novel species within this genus, for which the name Clostridium polynesiense sp. nov. is proposed. Strain FF5 was isolated from the skin flora of a healthy Senegalese 35-year-old woman. This strain was identified as belonging to the species Pantoea septica based on rpoB sequence identity of 99.7 % with Pantoea septica strain LMG 5345 and a highest MALDI-TOF-MS score of 2.3 with Pantoea septica. Giant viruses and amoebae are common in freshwater, where they can coexist with other living multicellular organisms. We screened leeches from the species Hirudo medicinalis for giant viruses. We analyzed five H. medicinalis obtained from Tunisia (3) and France (2). The leeches were decontaminated and then dissected to remove internal parts for co-culture with Acanthamoeba polyphaga. The genomes of isolated viruses were sequenced on a 454 Roche instrument, and a comparative genomics analysis was performed. One Mimivirus was isolated and the strain was named Hirudovirus. The genome assembly generated two scaffolds, which were 1,155,382 and 25,660 base pairs in length. Functional annotations were identified for 47% of the genes, which corresponds to 466 proteins. The presence of Mimividae in the same ecological niche as wild Hirudo may explain the presence of the mimivirus in the digestive tract of the leech, and several studies Viruses have already shown that viruses can persist in the digestive tracts of leeches fed contaminated blood. As leeches can be used medically and Mimiviruses have the potential to be an infectious agent in humans, patients treated with leeches should be surveyed to investigate a possible connection.
