2. Major- and Trace-Element Geochemistry of Geothermal Water from the Nappe Zone, Northern Tunisia: Implications for Mineral Prospecting and Health Risk Assessment.

A comprehensive hydrogeochemical survey of the geothermal waters from the Nappe Zone (Maghrebides fold-and-thrust belt) was undertaken to determine the origins of geothermal waters and to assess the health risks associated with their potentially toxic elements. A total of 11 geothermal water and 3 stream water samples were collected and analysed for major and trace elements (As, B, Ba, Fe, Mn, Pb, Sr, Zn). Two main geothermal water groups were highlighted by hydrogeochemical diagrams and multivariate analyses (PCA, HCA): the first group is the Na−Cl type, TDS > 10 g/L, controlled by deep circulation, while the second group is the Na-Cl−HCO
3 type, TDS < 2 g/L, and controlled by shallow circulation. A curved hydrogeochemical evolution path, observed from mixed bicarbonate shallow groundwater to chloride geothermal water, indicates that the interaction with evaporites drives the chemistry of the geothermal samples. On these, the As enrichments come from sulphide oxidation polymetallic mineralisation during the upwelling to the surface from E–W major lineaments. Therefore, E–W lineaments are potential areas for mineral prospecting. The health risk assessment reveals that the concentration of potentially toxic elements in geothermal waters are lower than the guideline values for the protection of freshwater aquatic life and dermal exposure (bathing or balneology). Expanding knowledge about the origin and mixing of deep fluids and the water–rock–gas interactions in aquifer systems can represent an improvement in the comprehension of crustal deformation processes. An analysis of the deep and meteoric fluid contributions to a regional groundwater circulation model in an active seismic area has been carried out. We performed two hydrogeochemical screenings of 15 springs in the San Vittorino Plain (central Italy). Furthermore, we updated the San Vittorino Plain structural setting with a new geological map and cross-sections, highlighting how and where the aquifers are intersected by faults. The application of Na-Li geothermometers, coupled with trace element and gas analyses, agrees in attributing the highest temperatures (>150 °C), the greatest enrichments in Li (124.3 ppb) and Cs (>5 ppb), and traces of mantle-derived He (1–2%) to springs located in correspondence with high-angle faults (i.e., S5, S11, S13, and S15). This evidence points out the role of faults acting as vehicles for deep fluids into regional carbonate aquifers. These results highlight the criteria for identifying the most suitable sites for monitoring variations in groundwater geochemistry due to the uprising of deep fluids modulated by fault activity to be further correlated with crustal deformation and possibly with seismicity. Abstract: Wetlands are unique ecosystems with high biodiversity. Knowledge of the ecology of these systems is important for their preservation. The area investigated in this study is located in the town of Ladispoli, in the province of Rome. In June 1995, the Palo Laziale wood was identified as a Site of Community Importance according to the European Commission Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC). This habitat has been drastically reduced due to the expansion of agricultural activities and urbanisation. Both chemical and isotope data provide important information for understanding the processes that determine the variation in chemical composition within a coastal wetland system. The spatial and temporal variation in chemical composition and the 87Sr/86Sr isotope composition of the individual water bodies within the system were measured over an annual cycle. We also compared geochemical data from 2010 with data collected during April 2002. The results of the geochemical analysis suggest that the waters are brackish (TDS>1000mg/l), but these results exclude seawater intrusion as a possible cause of the deterioration of the wetland ecosystem. Based on a comparison of the data from 2010 and 2002, the system appears to have been resilient, successfully buffering the changes without substantial alterations in its functioning. Our investigation shows that geochemical research is necessary to understand the modifications affecting wetland ecosystems and the role of human-induced changes. The monitoring data for the water resource in the Palo Laziale area provided evidence that slight changes have occurred over an eight-year period. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

6. Hydrogeochemistry and strontium isotopes of spring and mineral waters from Monte Vulture volcano, Italy

This paper describes the results of a study that was conducted to determine the relationship between hydrogeochemical composition and 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios of the Mt. Vulture spring waters. Forty samples of spring waters were collected from local outcrops of Quaternary volcanites. Physico-chemical parameters were measured in the field and analyses completed for major and minor elements and 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios. A range of water types was distinguished varying from alkaline-earth bicarbonate waters, reflecting less intense water–rock interaction processes to alkali bicarbonate waters, probably representing interaction with volcanic rocks of Mt. Vulture and marine evaporites. The average 87Sr/86Sr isotope ratios suggest at least 3 different sources. However, some samples have average Sr isotope ratios (0.70704–0.70778) well above those of the volcanites. These ratios imply interaction with other rocks having higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios, probably Triassic evaporites, which is substantiated by their higher content of Na, SO4 and Cl. The Sr isotope ratios for some samples (e.g. Toka and Traficante) are intermediate between the value for the Vulture volcanites and that for the local Mesozoic rocks. The salt content of these samples also lies between the value for waters interacting solely with the volcanites and the value measured in the more saline samples. These waters are thus assumed to result from the mixing of waters circulating in volcanic rocks with waters presumably interacting with the sedimentary bedrock (marine evaporites). 20. The chemistry and isotopic composition of waters in the low-enthalpy geothermal system of Cimino-Vico Volcanic District, Italy.

Geothermal energy exploration is based in part on interpretation of the chemistry, temperature, and discharge rate of thermal springs. Here we present the major element chemistry and the δD, δ 18 O, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr and δ 11 B isotopic ratio of groundwater from the low-enthalpy geothermal system near the city of Viterbo in the Cimino-Vico volcanic district of west-Central Italy. The geothermal system hosts many thermal springs and gas vents, but the resource is still unexploited. Water chemistry is controlled by mixing between low salinity,HCO 3 -rich fresh waters (< 24.2 °C) flowing in shallow volcanic rocks and SO 4 -rich thermal waters (25.3 °C to 62.2 °C) ascending from deep, high permeability Mesozoic limestones. The (equivalent) SO 4 /Cl (0.01–0.02), Na/Cl (2.82–5.83) and B/Cl ratios (0.02–0.38) of thermal waters differs from the ratios in other geothermal systems from Central Italy, probably implying a lack of hydraulic continuity across the region. The δ 18 O (− 6.6‰ to − 5.9‰) and δD (− 40.60‰ to − 36.30‰) isotopic composition of spring water suggest that the recharge area for the geothermal system is the summit region of Mount Cimino. The strontium isotope ratios ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) of thermal waters (0.70797–0.70805) are consistent with dissolution of the Mesozoic evaporite-carbonate units that constitute the reservoir, and the ratios of cold fresh waters mainly reflect shallow circulation through the volcanic cover and some minor admixture (< 10%) of thermal water as well. The boron isotopic composition (δ 11 B) of fresh waters (− 5.00 and 6.12‰) is similar to that of the volcanic cover, but the δ 11 B of thermal waters (− 8.37‰ to − 4.12‰) is a mismatch for the Mesozoic reservoir rocks and instead reflects dissolution of secondary boron minerals during fluid ascent through flysch units that overlie the reservoir. A slow and tortuous ascent enhances extraction of boron but also promotes conductive cooling, partially masking the heat present in the reservoir. Overall data from this study is consistent with previous studies that concluded that the geothermal system has a large energy potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Some monitoring stations have been recording for 20years the geomorphic processes acting on calanchi and biancane badlands located in the Tyrrhenian side of Central Italy. Field monitoring was aimed at studying the dynamics of surface processes, such as sheet, rill and gully erosion, shallow landsliding, piping and tunneling, considering their space–time variability as a consequence of both natural factors and human pressure. This paper shows the results of grain size, geochemical and mineralogical composition of parent materials from Upper Orcia Valley sites (Southern Tuscany), to further elucidate the role of their properties on processes acting on both bare and vegetated surfaces. Parent materials properties are discussed with respect to the initiation and development of different badlands processes. In particular, clay dispersivity at different depths in the sample sites is examined as a well-known controlling factor of accelerated erosion, thus providing some interesting clues for understanding the spatial variability of denudation rates in the considered badlands sites.
