Miocene strata of the Claremont, Orinda, and Moraga formations of the Berkeley Hills (California Coast Ranges, USA) record sedimentation and volcanism during the passage of the Mendocino triple junction and early evolution of the San Andreas fault system. Detrital zircon laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) age spectra indicate a change in sedimentary prove nance between the marine Claremont formation (Monterey Group) and the terrestrial Orinda and Moraga Formations associated with uplift of Franciscan Complex lithologies. A sandstone from the Claremont formation produced a detrital zircon chemical abrasion–isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spec trometry (CA-ID-TIMS) maximum depositional age of 13.298 ± 0.046 Ma, indicating younger Claremont deposition than previously interpreted. A trachydacite tuff clast within the uppermost Orinda Formation yielded a CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon date of 10.094 ± 0.018 Ma, and a dacitic tuff within the Moraga Formation produced a CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon date of 9.974 ± 0.014 Ma. These results indicate rapid progression from subsidence in which deep-water siliceous sediments of the Claremont formation were deposited to uplift that was followed by subsidence during deposition of terrestrial sediments of the Orinda Forma tion and subsequent eruption of the Moraga Formation volcanics. We associate the Orinda tuff clast and Moraga volcanics with slab-gap volcanism that followed the passage of the Mendocino triple junction. Given the necessary time lag between triple junction passage and the removal of the slab that led to this volcanism, subsidence associated with ca. 13 Ma Claremont sedimentation and subsequent Orinda to Moraga deposition can be attributed to basin formation along the newly arrived transform boundary.

New whole‐rock major and trace element geochemistry from the Leka Ophiolite Complex in Norway is presented and compared to the geochemical evolution and proposed tectonomagmatic processes recorded in the Izu‐Bonin‐Mariana system. These data demonstrate that the Leka Ophiolite Complex formed as forearc lithosphere during subduction initiation. A new high‐precision zircon U‐Pb date on forearc basalt constrains the timing of subduction initiation in the "Leka sector" of the Iapetus Ocean to 491.36 ± 0.17 Ma. The tectonomagmatic record of the Leka Ophiolite Complex captures only the earliest stages of subduction initiation and is thereby distinct from some other Appalachian–Caledonian ophiolites of similar age. The diversity of Appalachian–Caledonian ophiolite records may represent differing preservation and exposure of a variable forearc lithosphere. Plain Language Summary: The Leka Ophiolite Complex (LOC) represents a preserved fragment of oceanic crust that formed during subduction in the Iapetus Ocean. Geochemical information recorded in the LOC rocks shows that it formed during the initial phase of subduction. The age of subduction initiation in the Iapetus Ocean is estimated at 491.36 million years ago based on isotopic dating of minerals within the LOC rocks. Other fragments of preserved oceanic crust with similar ages are found in the Appalachian–Caledonian mountains; however, their geochemical information suggests that they may have formed during different stages of the subduction zone development. We consider the variations in the oceanic crustal record to reflect selective preservation of different parts of the variable oceanic crust formed during the development of a subduction zone in the Iapetus Ocean. Alkalic magmatism occurred in the Selwyn Basin, Yukon, Canada throughout the Paleozoic, concurrent with extension during passive margin sedimentation. To examine magmatism associated with this extension, geochemical data were obtained from several locations in the Selwyn Basin (MacMillan Pass, Anvil District, Keno Hill, and the Misty Creek Embayment). Volcanic rocks from the Anvil District and the Misty Creek Embayment are dominated by alkalic basalts with light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched geochemical signatures, whereas metavolcanic and dike samples from Keno Hill comprise subalkaline basalts with enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt (E-MORB) signatures. The Early Ordovician Menzie Creek volcanic rocks of the Anvil District display trace element geochemical signatures intermediate between ocean island basalt (OIB) and E-MORB, whereas the Middle–Late Ordovician volcanic rocks from the Misty Creek Embayment have OIB signatures. Differences in the trace element geochemistry of the sample suites are attributed to the degree of partial melting. The Menzie Creek volcanic rocks formed from large volume melts of enriched mantle that diluted incompatible element signatures in the Early Ordovician. Late Ordovician magmatism produced the Misty Creek Embayment samples, where restricted melt volumes of an enriched mantle source resulted in the most enriched samples geochemically. The Keno Hill samples represent the shallowest melting of the analysed samples and may have resulted from melting of heterogenous subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Magmatic zircons from a Keno Hill metavolcanic sample analysed by chemical abrasion thermal ionization mass spectrometry resulted in a primary deposition age of c. 296 ± 0.36 Ma (Early Permian), during a period with little magmatism in the Selwyn Basin and representing a previously unknown unit in the area. The Paleocene‐early Eocene continental magmatic arc (PECMA) in the Northern Andes is an example of arc magmatism following a major collisional event. This arc formed after the arc‐continent collision between the Caribbean Plate and the South American continental margin at ca. 72 Ma. We used detrital zircon LA‐ICP‐MS and CA‐ID‐TIMS geochronology and geochemistry to complement the limited plutonic record of the PECMA and better characterize the PECMA's magmatic evolution. Zircon geochronology and their respective trace element geochemistry were analyzed from Paleocene‐early Eocene strata of the Bogotá Formation in the foreland region. Our results show that after the collision of the Caribbean Plate, the magmas in the PECMA differentiated under a thick continental crust with limited subduction input at ca. 66 Ma. By 62–50 Ma, scattered patterns of Hf, U, U/Yb, and Yb/Gd ratios in detrital zircons suggest the existence of contrasting magmatic inputs attributed to different depths of crustal fractionation, varied temperatures of crystallization, and significant mantle and subduction inputs. These diverse magmatic patterns reflect the evolution of the continental crust. We proposed that oblique convergence and strike‐slip tectonics favored contrasting crustal architectures along the continental margin while local lithosphere dripping from a previously thickened crust promoted the formation of hot magmas under a thick continental crust. The 1⋅3 Ma Mesa Falls Tuff (MFT), the second and volumetrically smallest of the Yellowstone caldera-forming eruptions, was examined using a joint zircon petrochronological and sanidine 40Ar/39Ar approach to constrain the thermal and chemical evolution, autocrystic growth, antecrystic recycling, and eruptive age of the host magma. A total of 451 laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in situ spot analyses collected from 323 zircon crystals from five pumice blocks and two welded ash-flow tuff samples provide trace element and Ti-in-zircon thermometry data, which are in turn complemented by high-precision 206Pb/238U dates from over 50 of those grains. Sanidine grains from two of the pumices were analyzed by incremental step-heating or total fusion 40Ar/39Ar dating techniques performed on single crystals using a multi-collector mass spectrometer, yielding an eruption age of 1⋅300 ± 0⋅001 Ma. Zircon dates range from 1⋅57 to 1⋅30 Ma. Rare grains older than 1⋅37 Ma may contain inherited cores recycled from the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff (HRT) or other associated smaller volume, effusive Yellowstone magmas; however, the bulk of the Mesa Falls Tuff crystal load cannot be attributed to a long-lived, residual Huckleberry Ridge Tuff magma body. Zircon compositions define trends of strengthening negative europium anomaly and increasing incompatible trace element concentrations over ~150 °C of cooling. Crystals defining this full compositional spectrum range in age from 1⋅33 to 1⋅30 Ma; the dominant mode of 19 grains yields a mean crystallization age of 1⋅303 ± 0⋅002 Ma, within uncertainty of the sanidine 40Ar/39Ar age, attesting to the rapidity of magma accumulation, differentiation and crystallization prior to eruption. A subset of composite grains composed of extremely differentiated core compositions overgrown by Mesa Fall Tuff-like rims probably represents earlier solidified sidewall or roof accumulations later remobilized within the main Mesa Falls Tuff magma. Fractional crystallization modeling utilizing temperature-dependent zircon-melt partition coefficients is successful in reproducing the trends in incompatible trace element enrichment within zircon grains as a function of decreasing temperature and increasing europium anomaly. Zircon geochemistry thus provides a robust proxy for magma evolution, from the time of zircon saturation through differentiation and eruption. Integrated sanidine and zircon dates coupled with the thermochemical trends indicate that the Mesa Falls Tuff magmatic system differentiated over a period of < 30 kyr, with the bulk of zircon crystal nucleation and growth occurring within 10 kyr of eruption. These petrochronological studies of the MFT and HRT clearly illustrate that the long-term volumetric extrusive rate at Yellowstone (~2 x 10-3 km³ a-1) is punctuated by episodes of much higher magmatic flux (~2 x 10-2 to ~2 x 10-1 km³ a-1). New zircon U-Pb, trace element, and Lu-Hf laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) data are presented for five Early to Middle Devonian granitic and felsic volcanic rocks from the Cashes Ledge igneous suite, central Gulf of Maine, USA. These samples were previously analyzed by U-Pb LA-ICP-MS and whole-rock geochemical methods and the new data generally corroborate the earlier results. Coarse-grained alkali-feldspar granite from northwest of the Fundy magnetic anomaly, the interpreted fault boundary in the offshore between Gondwanan microcontinents Ganderia to the northwest and Avalonia to the southeast, yielded a crystallization age of 414 ± 2 Ma. Southeast of the inferred fault, crystallization ages are 385 ± 3 Ma and 386 ± 3 Ma for two crystal tuff samples near the fault, 403 ± 3 Ma for an alkali-feldspar granite ~50 km southeast of the fault, and 399 ± 5 Ma for syenogranite ~25 km southeast of the fault, which also yielded inherited grains at ~1.3 Ga and between 613 ± 15 Ma and 558 ± 9 Ma. Lu-Hf LA-ICP-MS data for zircon retaining igneous crystallization ages have εHf(t) between 2.9 and 13.1 and model ages based on felsic sources between 0.52 and 1.04 Ga, reflecting a mix of late Mesoproterozoic (Avalonian?) basement and primitive melt, possibly in an extensional setting. Zircon Nb/ Hf ratios generally greater than 0.001 indicate a predominately within-plate/anorogenic/rifr setting, consistent with their whole-rock chemistry. U/Yb-Nb/Yb and U/Yb-Hf tectonic setting discrimination diagrams show ocean island to continental arc signatures, with a stronger continental arc signature for the syenogranite. Most zircon grains have Eu/Eu* values less than 0.1, indicating a crustal thickness of ~30 km or less at the time of their crystallization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Dadeville Complex of Alabama and Georgia (southeastern United States) represents the largest suite of exposed mafic-ultramafic rocks in the southern Appalachians. Due to poor preservation, chemical alteration, and tectonic reworking, a specific tectonic origin for the Dadeville Complex has been difficult to deduce. We obtained new whole-rock and mineral geochemistry coupled with zircon U-Pb geochronology to investigate the magmatic and metamorphic processes recorded by the Dadeville Complex, as well as the timing of these processes. Our data reveal an up-stratigraphic evolution in the geochemistry of the volcanic rocks, from forearc basalts to boninites. Our new U-Pb zircon crystallization data--obtained from three amphibolite samples--place the timing of forearc/protoarc volcanism no later than ca. 467 Ma. New thermobarometry suggests that the Dadeville Complex rocks subsequently experienced deep, high-grade metamorphism, at pressure-temperature conditions of >7 kbar and >760 °C. The data presented here support a model for formation of the Dadeville Complex in the forearc region of a subduction zone during subduction initiation and protoarc development, followed by deep burial/underthrusting of the complex during orogenesis. The Ellsworth-Whitmore Mountain terrane of central Antarctica was part of the early Paleozoic amalgamation of Gondwana, including a 13,000 m section of Cambrian- Permian sediments in the Ellsworth Mountains deposited on Grenville-age crust. The Jurassic breakup of Gondwana involved a regional, bimodal magmatic event during which the Ellsworth-Whitmore terrane was intruded by intraplate granites before translation of the terrane to its present location in central Antarctica. Five widely separated granitic plutons in the Ellsworth-Whitmore terrane were analyzed for their whole-rock geochemistry (X-ray fluorescence), Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic compositions, and U-Pb zircon ages to investigate the origins of the terrane magmas and their relationships to mafic magmatism of the 183 Ma Karoo-Ferrar large igneous province (LIP). We report high-precision (±0.1 m.y.) isotope dilution- thermal ionization mass spectrometry (IDTIMS) U-Pb zircon ages from granitic rocks from the Whitmore Mountains (208.0 Ma), Nash Hills (177.4-177.3 Ma), Linck Nunatak (175.3 Ma), Pagano Nunatak (174.8 Ma), and the Pirrit Hills (174.3-173.9 Ma), and U-Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) ages from the Whitmore Mountains (200 ± 5 Ma), Linck Nunatak (180 ± 4 Ma), Pagano Nunatak (174 ± 4 Ma), and the Pirrit Hills (168 ± 4 Ma). We then compared these results with existing K-Ar ages and Nd model ages, and used initial Sr, Nd, and Pb isotope ratios, combined with xenocrystic zircon U-Pb inheritance, to infer characteristics of the source(s) of the parent magmas. We conclude that the Jurassic plutons were not derived exclusively from crustal melts, but rather they are hybridized magmas composed of convecting mantle, subcontinental lithospheric mantle, and lower continental crustal contributions. The mantle contributions to the granites share isotopic similarities to the sources of other Jurassic LIP mafic magmas, including radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr (0.706-0.708), unradiogenic 143Nd/144Nd (εNd < -5), and Pb isotopes consistent with a low-μ source (where μ = 238U/204). Isotopes and zircon xenocrysts point toward a crustal end member of predominantly Proterozoic provenance (0.5-1.0 Ga; Grenville crust), extending the trends illustrated by Ferrar mafic intrusive rocks, but contrasting with the inferred Archean crustal and/or lithospheric mantle contributions to some basalts of the Karoo sector of the LIP. The Ellsworth-Whitmore terrane granites are the result of mafic rocks underplating the hydrous crust, causing crustal melting, hybridization, and fractionation to produce granitic magmas that were eventually emplaced as post-Ferrar, within-plate melts at higher crustal levels as the Ellsworth-Whitmore terrane rifted off Gondwana (47°S) before migrating to its current position (82°S) in central Antarctica. U–Th–Pb zircon geochronology is an essential tool for quantifying the emplacement, differentiation and thermal evolution of crustal magmatic systems. However, the power of U–Pb zircon dates can be enhanced through complementary characterization of mineral texture and geochemistry, as this permits more detailed interpretations of geochronological datasets than conventionally achieved. Our approach to better relating zircon dates and geological processes consists of a multi-method analytical workflow, including cathodoluminescence imaging (CL), in situ LA-ICPMS/EPMA zircon geochemistry, U–Pb zircon ID-TIMS geochronology, and solution ICPMS zircon Trace Element Analysis (U–Pb TIMS-TEA). These methods are here applied to zircon from the Bergell Intrusion, a composite Alpine pluton preserving a ~ 10 km mid-crustal transect. Hand samples of tonalite, granodiorite and hybridized granitoid each record 250–700 kyr of autocrystic zircon growth. Bergell zircons are ubiquitously zoned with ca. 10 4 –10 6 yr growth histories, as evidenced by ID-TIMS analysis of microsampled fragments from single crystals. U–Pb TIMS-TEA data exhibit compositional trends on multiple spatiotemporal scales, including the handsample -scale, representing in situ differentiation at the emplacement level (e.g., Th/U); lithology -scale, defining trajectories corresponding to the production of tonalitic versus granodioritic magmas (Lu/Hf); and pluton -scale, indicating increasingly-evolved melts over ~1.6 Myr of pluton assembly (Zr/Hf). These absolute TIMS-TEA temporal trends are corroborated by relative LA-ICPMS/EPMA core-to-rim geochemistry. We compare records of trace element evolution from TIMS-TEA, Bergell whole-rock geochemistry, and a global compilation of whole-rock geochemical data. These findings support zircon compositional evolution as a robust indicator of differentiation at local and crustal scales, and provide key empirical constraints on melt differentiation and cooling timescales in the middle crust.
