The Hamburg meteorite fell on January 16, 2018, near Hamburg, Michigan, after a fireball event widely observed in the U.S. Midwest and in Ontario, Canada. Several fragments fell onto frozen surfaces of lakes and, thanks to weather radar data, were recovered days after the fall. The studied rock fragments show no or little signs of terrestrial weathering. Here, we present the initial results from an international consortium study to describe the fall, characterize the meteorite, and probe the collision history of Hamburg. About 1 kg of recovered meteorites was initially reported. Petrology, mineral chemistry, trace element and organic chemistry, and O and Cr isotopic compositions are characteristic of H4 chondrites. Cosmic ray exposure ages based on cosmogenic 3He, 21Ne, and 38Ar are ~12 Ma, and roughly agree with each other. Noble gas data as well as the cosmogenic 10Be concentration point to a small 40-60 cm diameter meteoroid. An 40Ar-39Ar age of 4532 ± 24 Ma indicates no major impact event occurring later in its evolutionary history, consistent with data of other H4 chondrites. Microanalyses of phosphates with LA-ICPMS give an average Pb-Pb age of 4549 ± 36 Ma. This is in good agreement with the average SIMS Pb-Pb phosphate age of 4535.3 ± 9.5 Ma and U-Pb Concordia age of 4535 ± 10 Ma. The weighted average age of 4541.6 ± 9.5 Ma reflects the metamorphic phosphate crystallization age after parent body formation in the early solar system.

The history of mare volcanism critically informs the thermal evolution of the Moon. However, young volcanic eruptions are poorly constrained by remote observations and limited samples, hindering an understanding of mare eruption flux over time. The Chang'e-5 mission returned the youngest lunar basalts thus far, offering a window into the Moon's late-stage evolution. Here, we investigate the mineralogy and geochemistry of 42 olivine and pyroxene crystals from the Chang'e-5 basalts. We find that almost all of them are normally zoned, suggesting limited magma recharge or shallow-level assimilation. Most olivine grains record a short timescale of cooling. Thermal modeling used to estimate the thickness and volume of the volcanism sampled by Chang'e-5 reveals enhanced magmatic flux ~2 billion years ago, suggesting that while overall lunar volcanic activity may decrease over time, episodic eruptions at the final stage could exhibit above average eruptive fluxes, thus revising models of lunar thermal evolution. This work estimates the eruption volume of the young Chang'e-5 lunar samples using diffusion chronology and thermodynamic simulations, and finds that there was an increase in volcanic eruption flux about 2.0 billion years ago. Cenozoic magmatism on the Tibetan plateau shows systematic variations in space and time that must be considered in models concerning Tibetan tectonic evolution. After the India-Asia collision, which started in the early Tertiary and terminated the Gangdese arc magmatism in the Lhasa terrane made of the southern Tibetan plateau, widespread potassium-rich lavas and subordinate sodium-rich basalts were generated from ~ 50 to 30 Ma in the Qiangtang terrane of northern Tibet. Subsequent post-collisional magmatism migrated southwards, producing ultrapotassic and adakitic lavas coevally between ~ 26 and 10 Ma in the Lhasa terrane. Then potassic volcanism was renewed to the north and has become extensive and semicontinuous since ~ 13 Ma in the western Qiangtang and Songpan--Ganze terranes. Such spatial temporal variations enable us to elaborate a geodynamic evolution model which depicts when and how the Indian continental lithospheric mantle started thrusting under Asia by involving rollback and breakoff of the subducted Neo-Tethyan slab followed by removal of the thickened Lhasa lithospheric root. We propose that only after the lithospheric removal, which occurred at ~26 Ma, could the Indian mantle lithosphere have commenced its northward underthrusting and henceforth served as a pivotal control to the Himalayan-Tibetan orogenesis. Consequently, the Tibetan plateau is suggested to have risen diachronously from south to north. Whereas the southern part of the plateau may have been created and maintained since the late Oligocene, the northern plateau would have not attained its present-day elevation and size until the mid-Miocene when the lower part of the western Qiangtang and Songpan-Ganze lithospheres began to founder owing to the push of the underthrust Indian mantle lithosphere. Early Yanshanian (Jurassic) granitoids are widespread in the Nanling Range, South China. Whereas large granitic batholiths commonly crop out in the center of the Nanling Range (corresponding geographically to the central and northern parts of Guangdong Province), many small stocks occur in the southern part of Jiangxi Province. Most of the small stocks are associated closely with economically significant rare-metal deposits (W, Sn, Nb, Ta). Here we report the results for biotite granites and two-mica granites from three Yanshanian stocks of the Longyuanba complex. LA-ICPMS U-Pb dating of zircon yields an age of 156.1±2.1 Ma for Xiaomubei biotite granite, and U-Pb zircon dating using SIMS yields an age of 156.7±1.2 Ma for Longyuanba-Chengjiang biotite granite and 156.4±1.3 Ma for Jiangtoudong two-mica granite. Biotite granites are silica-rich (SiO=70%-79%), potassic (KO/NaO>1.9), and peraluminous (ASI=1.05-1.33). Associated samples are invariably enriched in Rb, Th, Pb and LREE, yet depleted in Ba, Nb, Sr, P and Ti, and their REE pattern shows a large fractionation between LREE and HREE ((La/Yb)=10.7-13.5) and a pronounced Eu negative anomaly ( δEu=0.28-0.41). Two-mica granite samples are also silica-rich (SiO=75%-79%), potassic (KO/NaO>1.2), and peraluminous (ASI=1.09-1.17). However, in contrast to the biotite granites, they are more enriched in Rb, Th, Pb and extremely depleted in Ba, Nb, Sr, P and Ti, and exhibit nearly flat ((La/Yb)=0.75-1.08) chondrite-normalized REE patterns characterized by strong Eu depletion ( δEu=0.02-0.04) and clear tetrad effect (TE=1.10-1.14). Biotite granites and two-mica granties have comparable Nd isotopic signatures, and their ɛNd( t) are concentrated in the −13.0 to −9.6 and −11.5 to −7.7 respectively. Their zircon Hf-O isotopes of both also show similarity (biotite granites: ɛHf( t)=−10.8-−7.9, δO=7.98‰-8.89‰ and ɛHf( t)= −13.8 to −9.1, δO=8.31‰-10.08‰; two-mica granites: ɛHf( t)=−11.3 to −8.0, δO=7.91‰-9.77‰). The results show that both biotite and two-mica granites were derived mainly from sedimentary source rocks with a minor contribution from mantle-derived materials. In spite of some S-type characteristics, the biotite granites were formed by fractional crystallization of I-type magma and assimilation of peraluminous sedimentary rocks during their ascent to the surface. Therefore, they belong to highly fractionated I-type granites. Two-mica granites exhibit a tetrad effect in their REE patterns, but share the same isotopic features with the biotite granites, suggesting that they are highly fractionated I-type granites as well. Their Lanthanide tetrad effects may be attributed to the hydrothermal alteration by magmatic fluids that have suffered degassing at late stages. Granitic magmas undergoing fractional crystallization and wall-rock assilimation can generate highly evolved granites with no REE tetrad effect in the uni-phase system. However, in the late-stage of magmatic evolution in the multi-phase system (i.e., magmatic-hydrothermal system), these magmas also can lead to the highly evolved granites exhibiting mew-shaped REE pattern characterized by tetrad effect as the consequence of melt-fluid and fluid-vapor fractionation, and the resultant autometasomatism. We thus suggest that the REE pattern exhibiting tetrad effect feature is an important indicator of rare metal mineralization in the early Yanshanian time in southern China, implying the metamorphism of the ore fluid. SHRIMP U-Pb zircon age, geochemical and Nd isotopic data are reported for the Neo-proterozoic Guandaoshan pluton in the Yanbian region, SW Sichuan. This pluton is of typical I-type granite and emplaced at (857 ± 13) Ma. Geochemical and Nd isotopic characters suggest that the pluton was generated by partial melting of pre-existing, young (late Mesoproterozoic to early Neo-proterozoic) low-K tholeiitic protolith within an intraplate anorogenic setting. The Guandaoshan pluton probably records the earliest magmatism induced by the proposed ca. 860–750 Ma mantle superplume beneath the supercontinent Rodinia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Calcite bodies (CBs) consistently appear within a marble band of the UHT granulite facies metamorphic terrain of the Highland Complex (HC) in Sri Lanka. • The trace element and isotopic compositions of the CBs show distinctions from typical mantle-derived carbonitites, but indicating crustal sources. • These findings suggest that the CBs should be derived from the crustal anatexis of marble. • The UHT metamorphism, along with the presence of CO 2 -rich fluids, likely facilitated the crustal anatexis of marble. The special calcite bodies (CBs) exposed within the ultrahigh temperature (UHT) granulite facies terrain in the Balangoda area of Sri Lanka preserve shreds of evidence for the generation of crust-derived carbonatite in the crust. The CBs are exclusively made up of massive calcites and appear as concordant bands extending tens of meters or as meso -scale isolated pockets hosting the massive dolomitic marble band. Various sizes of mafic and calc-silicate enclaves occur as rotated or tilted structures within the CBs. The contact between the CBs and the host marble is texturally and mineralogically gradational, while the contact between the enclaves and the CBs is sharp. The large-ion lithophile elements and rare earth element contents of the CBs show enrichment compared to the host marble, while depletion compared to typical carbonatites. Furthermore, the Sr content and C-O isotope values in CBs differ from those found in known carbonatites, hydrothermal carbonates, or metasomatic carbonates. We suggested that the crustal anatexis of marble should be hypothesized as the possible mechanism for the origin of the CBs. Microtexural evidence of the calcite grains shows indications of the melting of the host marble. The release of CO 2 -rich fluids from the collision and thrusting of HC over VC, or related metamorphic events, likely lowered the solidus of carbonates, triggering crustal anatexis of marble during UHT granulite facies metamorphism. The generated low viscous carbonate melt may have moved rapidly, resulting in a low degree of mixing of silicates and fragmentation and dislocation of enclaves. The results of the present study reflect the existence of anatexis of carbonates under extreme crustal conditions and provide a better understanding of the sources, migration paths and reservoirs of the carbon recycling processes. Abstract: We report the petrography, mineralogy, trace element abundance geochemistry, and Pb–Pb geochronology of the lunar meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 4734 and make a comparison with the LaPaz Icefield (LAP) 02205/02224 low-Ti lunar basaltic meteorites. NWA 4734 is an unbrecciated low-Ti mare basalt composed mainly of subophitic-textured pyroxene (60vol%) and plagioclase (30%). Pyroxene, plagioclase, and olivine exhibit large compositional variations and intra-grain chemical zoning. Pyroxene and plagioclase in NWA 4734 have rare earth element (REE) concentrations and patterns similar to those of the LAPs. The crystallization age of NWA 4734, determined in situ in baddeleyite, is 3073±15Ma (2σ), nearly identical to that of the LAPs (3039±12Ma). NWA 4734 and the LAPs have similar textures, modal abundances, mineral chemistry, and crystallization ages, and are most likely source-crater paired on the Moon. One baddeleyite grain in LAP 02224 displays distinctively older and spatially variable ages, from 3349±62 to 3611±62Ma (2σ), similar to another baddeleyite grain (3109±29 to 3547±21Ma) reported by for the same meteorite. Raman spectra, cathodoluminescence, and stoichiometric studies of the baddeleyite suggest that the two older grains were not endogenic but were trapped by the parental magma. Equilibrium partition calculation shows that the parental melt from which the NWA 4734 plagioclase crystallized has much lower REE contents than its whole rock, indicating an open system during magma evolution. NWA 4734 could have originated from a parental melt with REE concentrations similar to that of the Apollo 12 olivine basalt. The magma likely assimilated a small amount (∼4wt%) of KREEP-rich material during its ascent through the lunar crust. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
