This article features an interview with Jennifer Tosch, the founder of Amsterdam's Black Heritage Tours. Since 2013, Tosch has offered walking and boat tours, leading thousands of people through a colonial reading of Amsterdam's topography and celebrated institutions. As a cultural historian, Tosch deploys 'critical fabulation' to redress the erasures of historical archives. These efforts are part of a wider Mapping Slavery project that brings together Dutch scholars, activists, and artists who are revealing the Netherland's links to slavery and reclaiming early Black presence. As geographers, we hope this conversation informs collaborative anti-racist work in our field (and elsewhere) and furthers anti-colonial practices in the teaching of cultural geography beyond the classroom. In this article, I examine the concept of shared or 'distributed' agency between humans and non-humans in the context of coastal environments. Drawing on critical theory from the environmental humanities and cultural geography, I begin by situating distributed agency within a relational paradigm for human existence in a more-than-human world, building on the idea of receptivity to bridge the gap between an ontological and a moral-political understanding of the other-than-human capacity to act. I subsequently bring the concept of distributed agency into dialogue with the idea of 'working with nature', notably examples of the 'sand motor' coastal landscape intervention found in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and Ireland. The sand motor is a method for beach nourishment that operates on the basis of autonomous sediment dispersal, and that is meant to replace existing approaches to coastal protection that are labor-intensive and have a much shorter lifespan. Using the different cases, I demonstrate how planned and accidental deployments of the sand motor can be tied to varying paradigms for human/nature relationships, which may either contradict or support the principles of distributed agency. With regard to the latter, I highlight the importance of agential indeterminacy and human accountability for the long-term sustainability of pluriagential collaborations. Ultimately, by engaging productively with other-than-human expressions of agency through an ongoing practice of receptivity, important steps can be taken toward a more resilient future for all. Building on geographic scholarship around disability and drawing on a programme of arts-based research, we bring attention to the social and cultural geographies of families affected by rare disease. Seeking creative methodological opportunities, we invited families to send us postcards as a means of sharing experiences and reflections. We contextualize the emergence of the postcard as a modality of communication, situating our work within a wider epistolary and artistic tradition, before examining the opportunities postcarding might produce for geographic and broader qualitative research, noting the forms conduciveness to multimodality and recent calls for more engagement with the medium. We detail our own practices of participatory postcarding and the questions, challenges, and hopes such raised. Analysing the postcards received, we discuss how such helps understand the shifting social and cultural geographies of rare disease, reflecting on themes of (in)accessibility and exclusion, changing domestic geographies, and the importance of, and challenges associated with, family-based identities and communities in the context of rare disease. Such highlights opportunities for disability geography to engage in cross-cutting conversations and agenda-building with the nascent area of family geographies, along with further geographic inquiry into the spaces and worlds of rare disease. Digital mediation profoundly shapes how cultural geographers understand and encounter nature. Practice-based engagements with digitally mediated natures pose methodological, aesthetic and ethical questions for cultural geographers. Reflecting on a conference held in Bonn, Germany, in July 2022, which brought together a host of artists, practitioners, researchers and designers working at the human-technology-nature interface, this paper introduces the special issue, Digital Ecologies in Practice. The paper reflects on the key themes which cut across contributing articles and sketches a framework for methodologically – and practice – inclined geographers. Specifically, we draw out the ways in which practice-based engagements with digital technologies and processes of digitisation afford novel modes of sensing, speculating and remediating natures that have implications for the doing of both digital ecologies and cultural geographies as fields of research and domains of critical practice. Ch'oe Namsŏn was a key figure in the introduction of geography into the print media culture of early twentieth-century Chosŏn. Ch'oe used geography as a tool, creating a new territorial consciousness for national cohesion, and this article explores how this greatly shaped his poetic landscape. Locating itself between the boundaries of literary studies and cultural geography, this work looks at Ch'oe's underexplored T'aebaek poetry, in which his interests in geography, history, and national identity significantly converge. Drawing on "Mount Taebaek" of Korea's past, Ch'oe fashions the mountain into a pseudo-religious icon of nationhood. A symbolic landscape, evocative of a uniquely Korean past yet rising as a global icon going into a modern world, Ch'oe's poetry creates a godlike figure for the Korean people to look to in a changing time of imperialism, nationalism, and modern progress. Through various iterations of T'aebaek—benevolent deity, bringer of modernity, omnipotent ruler of the world—one sees the mountain play a vital role in the shaping of Ch'oe's nationalist project, which would have continued influence on his writings later in life. This article offers a critical appraisal of institutionalised knowledge production and exchange on the history and philosophy of geography in the United Kingdom. We examine broad epistemic trends over 41 years (1981–2021) through an analysis of annual conference sessions and special events convened by the History and Philosophy of Geography Research Group (HPGRG) of the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG). We show how organisational, sociocultural, and epistemic changes were coproduced, as expressed by three significant findings. Organisationally, the group emerged through shared philosophical interests of two early career geographers at Queen's University of Belfast in 1981 and received new impetus through its strategic plan 1995–1997, which inspired long-term research collaborations. Socioculturally, the group's activities contributed to national traditions of geographical thought and praxis in masculinist academic environments, with instances of internationalisation, increasing feminisation, and organisational cooperation. Epistemically, the group's events in the 1980s shaped contextualist, constructivist, and critical approaches, and coproduced new cultural geography, but the emphasis shifted from historically sensitive biographical, institutional, and geopolitical studies of geographical knowledges, via critical, postcolonial, and feminist geographies of knowledge-making practices in the 1990s, to more-than-human and more-than-representational geographies in the early twenty-first century. • Analyses (the) history and philosophy of geography through the lens of a UK research group. • Examines 41 years of the group's RGS-IBG annual conference sessions and special events. • Reveals epistemic developments that shaped the wider discipline of geography. • Traces gradual diversification of contributors via internationalisation and feminisation. • Stresses close links between histories, methodologies, and philosophies of geography. This article presents the design and practice of a field course program that combines the urban walking tradition and digitally enabled mobile learning. This program adopts the concept of flâneur/flâneuse to develop a peripatetic pedagogy aiming to cultivate students' digitally assisted ethnographic skills; and to assist students in writing the digitally-mediated and post-modern city creatively. Based on a collaborative analysis, this article can offer a creative and critical way of thinking about our bodies, positionings, and the entanglements of technologies in a digitally assisted and multi-media educational environment and generate new knowledges in urban and cultural geography theories and practices. This paper makes an argument for a geography of girlhood, located at the intersection of historical geographies of globalisation and empire on the one hand, and feminist interventions in the geography of childhood and youth on the other. A focus on girlhood, I argue, opens up a debate on the discipline's own implication in a debate on climate science, moral hierarchies of civilisation and reproductive health at which intersection the category of 'girl' was materialised in the 19th century. This focus extends and historicises the argument made by scholars like Nicola Ansel that geographies of childhood speak not only to intimate scales of experience ‐ such as the home and neighbourhood—but instead suggest the ways in which everyday life is implicated in the scale of the global and the geopolitical. Drawing on an inter‐disciplinary scholarship, the paper argues that debates on gender and maturity—converging on the figure of the 'girl'—shaped raced and classed imaginaries of progress in the 19th and 20th centuries. Through this, the paper demonstrates that 'girlhood' is at the heart of historical geographies of urban planning, social care, and health, as well as indexing the continuities in the transition from a colonial discourse of civilisation to a mid‐20th century concern with development. Finally, the paper asks how to write about girls through an archive that is almost obsessively fixated on them as subjects of education and reform, even whilst they rarely appear in it as speaking subjects. I argue that both an emergent focus on non‐textual objects as sources, as well as the use of ephemeral material—including notes, creative writing exercises from the classroom, school diaries etc.—alongside the official archive might open the scholarship up to a multi‐scalar analysis of girlhood as imbricated in larger global and national discursive and material practices. Geographers have long been interested in popular culture, exploring everything from music and film, to fashion and sport. However, there remain some gaps in the field with some of the biggest and most widely consumed genres of popular culture suffering from neglect. Given the pace of technological change, geographers have been noticeably slow to come to grips with new digital popular media. This special issue presents work that interrogates popular culture ranging from the new to the old for its role as a vector for, or entry point into, encounters with places and people, and as a producer of spatiality and social relations. This editorial uses the concept of (em)placement to identify the complex overlaps, imbrications, and interlockings between social, cultural, and technological actors/actants. (Em)placement is also deployed to expand the space for popular culture as an object of study in geography in order to foster more diverse engagements, and the freedom to engage, with popular culture in the discipline. In doing so, we highlight contributions to cultural geography, bringing into focus the ways in which popular culture has been redefined in a time of heightened digital and deterritorialized engagement alongside restrictions on physical interaction enforced during the COVID-19 lockdowns. This essay is about many things including, but not limited to, Cyrille Regis, Delia Derbyshire, an Ewok badge, Mickey Mouse, Napalm Death, the Sylvanian Families, anonymous hate mail, bereavement, the luminous popular cultures of the often-deprecated English Midlands, the absence of so many amazing popular cultures from Social & Cultural Geography, and my own recurrent failure to write about these things. Richard Skelton's 2009 recording, Landings, is recognised as being intimately connected with landscape and the experience of place. This paper explores the use of therapeutic practice within the creation of the recording of Landings. Building on the work of cultural geographers who have emphasised the cultural and symbolic significance of landscape, as well as incorporating the work of geographers who have studied sound and music, the paper develops a non‐representational analysis, emphasising the interplay of human experiences and therapeutic practice. The paper explores how Skelton's music transcends a simple representation of the moorland landscape. It shows how the music, created through Skelton's therapeutic practice, channels the essence of the landscape. Skelton acknowledges the healing nature of this creative process. It offers catharsis and solace while, at the same time, connecting to living systems and exhibiting an ecological principle. By exploring the music created by Skelton's therapeutic practice and its profound alignment with nature, Landings offers valuable insights for geographers and beyond. The article "L'APPROCHE CULTURELLE" is a critical review of Paul Claval's book on Cultural Geography. The author explores the evolution of Cultural Geography in different national contexts, such as the United States, Portugal, and Brazil. The book addresses the importance of culture in society, highlighting its influence on communication, human relationships, and the formation of territories. Culture is also analyzed in relation to space, environment, and landscape, revealing how people attribute symbolic meanings to places. A proliferation of examinations of vertical, voluminous, subsurface, subterranean/subaqueous, geological, or underground relationships has emerged in the last few years of geographic thought. This article seeks to summarize four key themes in which the subsurface has gained prominence: geopolitics, natural resource extraction, cultural geographies, and epistemological politics. The article nonetheless critiques ahistorical, presentist, and/or Eurocentric tendencies in accounts of subsurface spaces, topographical verticalities, and the desire to "fill" a supposed "hole" of subsurface geographies. Altogether, I call for more precise, comparative, and historicized interpretations of the varieties of spatial relations above and below the surface of the earth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a reflective discussion of the research method developed by a small research team over a 5-year period as it intra-acted with the south Asian monsoon in three south/southeast Asian cities. It reflects on how the team's practice was transformed from being research on or about the monsoon as a discrete unit of analysis, to research in the monsoon and with its agential materiality. The paper first outlines the theoretical resources from cultural geography, anthropology, feminist theory, posthuman theory, and science and technology studies that the project drew from. After this theoretical section, the paper then discusses the practical implications of the method and the two emergent strands of research ('weather matters' and 'construction matters') that were followed in Chennai, Dhaka, and Yangon. The final section of the paper reflects on the extension of the method into the formatting of a book and an online exhibition. The paper concludes by arguing that what the method offers to cultural, weather-based research in monsoonal and other climes, is a situated, non-formulaic method that recognizes the affordances of the Earth's agency, of matter and of other-than-human lives for generating knowledge of and ways of being in changing weather-worlds. An architect and a cultural geographer meet to visit a vast industrial complex in southern Spain that was gradually abandoned between 1962 and 2012. Despite being formally designated as protected heritage, the practical absence of material intervention, historical interpretation or control of access turns the act of walking through these ruins into a highly immersive, sensorial and reflective experience. Drawing from fieldnotes and photo-documentation, this contribution broadens the generative potential of preserving-by-not-preserving, a novel heritage approach recently tackled in cultural geography literature. The geography of religion is a subdiscipline of cultural geography that deals with the social, cultural and environmental interactions between religion and space. In this sense, it studies all the changes that religion as a cultural phenomenon induces as a factor of special transformation. One specific topic in geography of religion is the influence of religion on the shaping the landscape. This framework also includes the emergence, i.e. the creation of sacred sites or sanctuaries as spaces of special significance for a part of society associated with a specific religion or belief. Sanctuaries are often linked to some historical event or narrative about a supernatural phenomenon and are frequent destinations for pilgrims. In Catholicism there is also a phenomenon of the so-called "translation" of the sanctuary, which involves the physical and symbolic replication of the sacred site in another geographical setting. This article deploys an analysis of available literature and sources to investigate the origin and development of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in Vepric, near Makarska, as a typical example of the translation of a sacred site. Modelled after the sanctuary in Lourdes at the be-ginning of the 20th century through the process of translation of sacred sites, it quickly became the leading Lourdes shrine in Croatia. The landscape reminiscent of Lourdes and a favourable location are the main factors in the popularization of the sanctuary in Vepric and its significance as an important religious destination in southern Croatia. This paper reviews contemporary geography literature pertaining to the development and experience of underwater spaces. Examining the underwater world as a space of practices, experiences, and visions that are both phenomenologically and geopolitically rich, the review covers research studies from human geography and cognate fields concentrating on the tourism and travel literature. After a brief overview of the many activities taking place underwater worldwide—from the evolution of the mythical Atlantis to the development of modern‐day Atlantis such as underwater hotels—the paper focuses studies in three areas: the consumption of cultural and natural heritage, Self‐contained underwater breathing apparatus diving and divers' experiences, and the possibility of human inhabitation of underwater realms in habitats such as underwater hotels and submarine research sites. It is argued that by becoming more familiar with underwater spaces, geographers who concentrate on tourism and marine environments can gain new perspectives that are likely to challenge the terrestrial imagination. This paper seeks to demonstrate the critical utility of the concept of the absurd in the exploration of the combined and uneven apocalypse known as the Anthropocene. Drawing inspiration from absurdist literature, and based on extensive field research, it takes the form of a psychogeographical journey down a non-existent highway in the Peruvian Amazon. The route of this long-promised megaproject is inhabited by people adrift in the midst of meaningless ruins, haunted by spectral infrastructures that were promised but never came, and plagued by monstrous apparitions of extractive violence. Consistent with absurdist method, the paper resists the temptation to leap out of this disconcerting domain into the normalizing rituals of academic sensemaking, and aims instead to grasp and convey the disorienting lived experience of 'space out of joint'. In doing so, it suggests that an absurdist sensibility can contribute to current debates in cultural geography on spectrality, psychogeography, and creative writing, through its emphasis on irrationality and indeterminacy, its exploration of chaotic and disintegrating spaces, and its evocation of fragmentation and disjuncture in the form of jagged shards of stark and vivid prose. Tourism development allows the enhancement of the heritage of local cultural resources, expressing the territorial potential. The Systematic Literature Review shown in this paper highlight the relationship between "cultural heritage" and "tourism". The current state of the art and the specific relationships between the contents of the selected publications demonstrate that tourism is an indispensable tool in local communication and cultural promotion policies and strategies. This paper engages with digital urban futures prospectively, departing from most existing geographical work that has tended to explore the future retrospectively. I do so by first discussing a methodology that is sensitive to the meanings and significations of the future as well as future‐making as an active process, or as 'practised'. I argue that such an orientation is necessary to challenge the established view of the future as an endpoint or as a priori in social and cultural geography and, correspondingly, invite a more processual and emergent understanding of the future as multiple, never complete and always becoming. Using the example of Singapore's Smart Nation initiative, I then show how this methodological approach can be employed to study the way urban dwellers encounter, engage and evaluate possible futures in their everyday spaces and lives. Focusing on futures prospectively is significant insofar as it directs attention to their relationality and open‐endedness, which, in turn, provides the latitude to consider and construct different forms of futures. Beyond the methodological contribution, this paper offers an epistemological intervention that not only unpicks how knowledge about the future is currently produced in the literature but also multiplies our ways of studying futurity and future‐making. This paper engages with digital urban futures prospectively, departing from most existing work that has tended to explore the future retrospectively. Using the example of the E‐Payments programme in Singapore, I show how a prospective methodological approach can be employed to study the way urban dwellers encounter, engage and evaluate possible futures in their everyday spaces and lives. In this second review of recent cultural geography research, I use the concept of The Critical Zone (originally from US Geoscience) as a lens. The environment is far too voluminous a field of cultural geographic research to be surveyed here, but it is too significant a body of research to be overlooked. Here, three key dimensions of Critical Zone studies offer a means to navigate this work: (i) multi-scalar (temporal and spatial) considerations of matter, energy and forces; (ii) biotic and abiotic relations; and, (iii) a commitment to producing knowledge beyond disciplinary silos. Discussion explores each of these in turn before reflecting, to close, on what cultural geographical thought and practice might add to considerations of the criticality of the critical zone. In the context of endeavors within social and cultural geography to conceive new models of subjectivity outside the classical model of the subject, this paper explores the possibility of a writing of subjectivity outside of the anthropocentric grammars that centralize the human subject as the locus of thought and action. To do so, we turn to the literary work Tropisms by French author Nathalie Sarraute for its expression of unconscious and impersonal 'micromovements' that evoke a mode of subjectivity that is no longer that of a given human individual. Sarraute's work, with its attentiveness to and amplification of surreptitious yet forceful events that influence how we think and how we act, its rejection of individualized psychological ideas about human experience and its experimentation with what literature can do, creates singular portraits of socio-spatial life in its unfolding and thus evokes different kinds of subjectivities – what we term a 'subjectivity without subjecthood'. To extrapolate from Sarraute's writing, we turn to Félix Guattari's theorization of subjectivity through a 'machinic' unconscious. In doing so, we draw out three dimensions of subjectivity as portrayed in Sarraute's work: its collective, asignifying and non-linear character. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amid the proportion of work on 'Muslim geographies', the majority has focused on Muslims as a minority discussed within societies of the West. Additionally, this work rarely discusses the positionality of the researcher despite significant overlap with work in feminist, social, and cultural geographies. This paper takes 'Muslim geographies' as a starting point to further problematise accounts of knowledge, subjectivity, and power with regard to the treatment of Islam in geography. I argue that geographical analysis from different standpoints is needed to yield other ways of knowing about Muslims and how they orient themselves across space and time. This theoretical intervention is informed by my fieldwork experience as a Muslim male conducting ethnographic research on migration and labour precarity with other Muslim migrants across Taiwan. The lure of an unavailable world is becoming increasingly prominent in Geography and related disciplines. The concern is that much research today remains affirmational—still grasping and instrumentalising being and relation—and that, whilst no doubt modified in such developments as the relational and ontological turns, this nevertheless continues the legacies of the modern episteme in new ways. Indeed, there is a marked momentum, across the social sciences and humanities, from cultural geography to computer and Black studies, to read the reduction of the world to available ontic and ontological cuts and distinctions as a form of violence. In response, tropes of the non‐relational, non‐ontological, the negative, nothingness, the void, absence and the abyss, for examples—what could be called 'unavailable geographies'—are of growing appeal and interest. This paper, foregrounding the importance of tracking how the material forces of history are read as enabling for the emergence of any new problem space, provides a distinctive pathway into this sense of a critical shift in Western critique. By way of an illustrative example, it focuses upon how the proliferation of logistics (broadly framed here as the logic of obtaining the world by way of cuts and distinctions, from metric culture, to identity politics, to the grasping of ontology and relation) is increasingly understood to open up the power of an undifferentiating reality; one which expands and deepens the unavailable world as a problem space for critique. Thus, whilst geographers, like many others, are currently critiquing dominant approaches for being too affirmational, the key argument of this paper is that we should also be taking one step back, asking why now, and through what broader forces of history, the lure of an unavailable world today? The lure of an unavailable world is becoming increasingly prominent in Geography and related disciplines. This work to articulate a geography of hope in the face of institutionalized epistemic injustice extends the emerging Indigenous political ecology approach through engagement with cultural resources law and policy. While Indigenous political ecology offers a framework to understand the context in which geographies of hope are created, geographies of hope are specific spatial processes that exemplify resilience, vision, and ingenuity in adverse circumstances. This paper focuses on such hopeful, place-based work to bring US and, specifically, California, cultural resources and repatriation law and policy into alignment with contemporary international Indigenous human rights standards. The Native and non-Native allies advocating for legal and political change are both focused on protecting particular places and their entwined epistemologies, and on altering processes of decision-making that privilege non-Indigenous epistemologies. Hope is specifically fostered in efforts to educate non-Native citizens on the continuities between past and present, in highlighting the efforts of Indigenous people working to care for and protect their heritage on/in/with the land, and in fostering legal frameworks that center justice. Carl Sauer's The Morphology of Landscape is a foundational text for cultural geography. Instead of focusing on culture, however, this article pays special attention to Sauer's use of phenomenology. Through the lens of German Theory, I detail the debate around areal realism in German geography amongst Carl Ritter, Julius Fröbel, Alexander von Humboldt, and Alfred Hettner leading up to The Morphology of Landscape. By reconstructing the onto-epistemological problem that Sauer's invocation of phenomenology responds to, I extrapolate a Sauerian phenomenology for both physical and human geography. Since one of cultural geography's aims is to understand how human cultures influence the landscape, the geobiography of a modest artifact can be a readable clue concerning a larger cultural context. This article discusses how diasporic cultural mobility finds its way from the place of origin to the place of settlement. The story begins in Soviet Russia in the twilight of the 1930s when the Red Revolution has driven many people to flee their homeland and continues in Iran before and during World War II. A family of White emigrants from Ukraine came to Iran in the 1930s. They tried to relive sweet memories of distant years in the village of Damavand outside Tehran by finding a Russian-style summer residence, 'dacha', in the context of Iranian culture and geographical territory. In late Summer 1941, a taxi driver entrusted an old engraved copper pot to them as a guarantee to return and take them to Tehran, which Allied forces had occupied. Four generations have continuously cared for this unbreakable relic, whose story, valued much more than the object itself, illustrates the cultural dynamics of migration in the form of portable property. For cultural geographers, weather is primarily known through the body. Cultural geographers employ sensual ethnographies, diaries, interviews and visual methods to understand how weather is differentially felt. Somewhat lacking are cultural geographical accounts of weather as data: how weather is mapped, indexed and modelled with consequences not only for science but also for vernacular weather-worlds. In contrast, a growing set of artistic projects are experimenting with scientific practices that measure, modify, and produce our weather. Taking inspiration from these creative practices, this paper explores the intersection of weather as body, and weather as machine, as part of a current of transdisciplinary work I call the elemental geohumanities. Drawing from international cultural programmes such as the World Weather Network and employing vignettes from the open-weather archive, I advance a critical framework for thinking at the interface of embodied weather and "weather engines" for cultural geography and the geohumanities. Although both the analysis of regional culture and urbanisation are long-standing preoccupations in geography, few studies have considered the relationship between the two, the former traditionally being a topic in cultural geography, while the latter is usually interpreted and analysed as a process in economic geography. Taking evidence from the 1851–1911 censuses of England and Wales, this article analyses individual migration paths to identify stable regions of human interaction by applying a sophisticated community-detection algorithm. By accurately mapping the regions within which the majority of migration occurred between 1851 and 1911 and arguing that the stability of these geographies is evidence of more than just mutable communities but rather of persistent regional cultures, this article responds to previous studies that have sought to identify the cultural provinces of England and Wales. Indeed, by demonstrating that the regions bear a striking resemblance to those that have long been hypothesised as being distinct cultural provinces of England and Wales, this article empirically corroborates their existence. In order to further demonstrate that the regions constitute cultural provinces, this paper incorporates these boundaries into a spatial interaction model (SIM). The results of the SIM not only shows that the boundaries between the regions limited the number of migrants that crossed them–over and above that explained by control variables–and therefore represented the boundaries of cultural provinces, demarcating discrete regions of human interaction–but that such boundaries disproportionately restricted rural-urban migrants, thereby slowing the pace at which England and Wales urbanised. This paper therefore demonstrates that urbanisation should not only be interpreted as only an economic phenomenon, but a cultural one also, and that if urbanisation is to be fully understood, individuals' attachment to place as a component of their identity, ought to be formally incorporated into models of migration. Using a 'geo/graphic' map of New Basford, Nottingham as its starting point, and contextualising this within critical approaches to map-making and contemporary critical cultural geographies, this article subverts traditional cartographic principles in foregrounding the everyday, lived experiences of place. It explores the possibilities inherent in both narrative and design in the construction of a typo/graphic re-mapping of New Basford that resists a palimpsestual, chronological view of place. In doing so it explores how one might map the relationship of stories to place and articulate the map making process itself. Bringing together cartesian fragments alongside autoethnographic excerpts, participants' memories, archival texts, contemporary newspaper headlines and photographs, the article's empirical section creates a narrative that employs typography and image in a way that situates the reader within the process of mapmaking and an unfolding experience of New Basford. In reflecting on this process of re-mapping place, the article contributes insights as to the challenges of incorporating temporality within maps and print; the limitations of a palimpsestual approach; and the opportunities offered by traditional Cartesian references. Furthermore, it highlights how typography and design can contribute to the construction of a legible, yet 'messy' narrative of place framed within the less traditional Euclidian space of the page. Responding to recent calls for geography, especially urban and public geography, to engage more fully with the concept of dignity, this paper shows how feminist participatory arts-based approaches can facilitate the reclaiming of dignity among migrant women survivors of violence, an issue which has received surprisingly limited attention to date. We argue for feminist cultural geography to engage more fully with conceptualisations of dignity and especially how working through participatory arts is key to building it among migrant women. Drawing on ongoing research with a community arts organisation, Migrants in Action (MinA), run by and working with Brazilian migrant women in London, the paper proposes the notion of ‘creative dignity encounters’. These entail generating safe and compassionate spaces for women to engage in artistic engagements that allow them to reclaim their dignity conceived relationally as respect and recognition, self-respect and autonomy. We identify three types of ‘creative dignity encounters’ revolving around these three dimensions; the first, facilitates migrant women’s reinterpretation of and additional contributions to prior social science research as an act of respect and recognition; the second, engenders self-respect through healing and belonging and the third, builds autonomy through acknowledging and challenging wider structural oppressions that underpin gendered violence. Such encounters create different outcomes depending on the artistic medium and how they are sustained over time. Furthermore, they are not a panacea for bringing about social transformation and recovery, yet they can allow migrant women to begin their journeys towards reclaiming dignity in affective, relational and embodied ways.
