Breakup between Greenland and Canada resulted in oceanic spreading in the Labrador Sea and Baffin Bay. These ocean basins are connected through the Davis Strait, a bathymetric high comprising primarily continental lithosphere, and the focus of the West Greenland Tertiary volcanic province. It has been suggested that a mantle plume facilitated this breakup and generated the associated magmatism. Plume-driven breakup predicts that the earliest, most extensive rifting, magmatism and initial seafloor spreading starts in the same locality, where the postulated plume impinged. Observations from the Labrador Sea–Baffin Bay area do not accord with these predictions. Thus, the plume hypothesis is not confirmed at this locality unless major ad hoc variants are accepted. A model that fits the observations better involves a thick continental lithospheric keel of orogenic origin beneath the Davis Strait that blocked the northward-propagating Labrador Sea rift resulting in locally enhanced magmatism. The Davis Strait lithosphere was thicker and more resilient to rifting because the adjacent Paleoproterozoic Nagssugtoqidian and Torngat orogenic belts contain structures unfavourably orientated with respect to the extensional stress field at the time.RÉSUMÉLa cassure entre le Groenland et le Canada a entraîné une expansion océanique de la mer du Labrador et de la baie de Baffin. La lithosphère du détroit de Davis était plus épaisse et plus résistante à l’expansion océanique parce que les bandes orogéniques paléoprotérozoïques du Nagssugtoqidian et de Torngat renferment des structures défavorablement orientées par rapport au champ de contraintes d’extensions de l'époque.

The particles collected in a sediment trap in the Gaoping Submarine Canyon provided a high resolution PAH profile that traces typhoon (Kalmaegi) induced particle movement. Results provide further evidence that submarine canyons are an effective conduit for transporting terrestrial contaminants such as PAHs, particularly as typhoon-related hyperpycnal plumes at river mouths and ensuing turbidity currents in the submarine canyon. Observations here show that two typhoon-triggered turbidity currents passed the sediment trap. The beginnings of the two turbidity currents showed strong pyrogenic signatures suggesting coal and biomass burning sources. These turbidity currents carried enormous amounts of particulate PAHs (510 kg in 12.5 h), which accounted for 4.2% of the annual PAH flux from the Gaoping River. The PAH signature allowed the typhoon effect to be broken into five stages: (I) period before the typhoon effect (marine sources), (II) typhoon induced currents (resuspended sediments), (III) down-canyon flow (pyrogenic particles from northwestern shelf), (IV) river plume impact with two turbidity currents (arrival of terrestrial particles), and (V) end of typhoon discharge of anthropogenic PAHs to the canyon head.

Volcanic lightning, perhaps the most spectacular consequence of the electrification of volcanic plumes, has been implicated in the origin of life on Earth, and may also exist in other planetary atmospheres. Recent years have seen volcanic lightning detection used as part of a portfolio of developing techniques to monitor volcanic eruptions. Remote sensing measurement techniques have been used to monitor volcanic lightning, but surface observations of the atmospheric electric Potential Gradient (PG) and the charge carried on volcanic ash also show that many volcanic plumes, whilst not sufficiently electrified to produce lightning, have detectable electrification exceeding that of their surrounding environment. Electrification has only been observed associated with ash-rich explosive plumes, but there is little evidence that the composition of the ash is critical to its occurrence. Different conceptual theories for charge generation and separation in volcanic plumes have been developed to explain the disparate observations obtained, but the ash fragmentation mechanism appears to be a key parameter. It is unclear which mechanisms or combinations of electrification mechanisms dominate in different circumstances. Electrostatic forces play an important role in modulating the dry fall-out of ash from a volcanic plume. Beyond the local electrification of plumes, the higher stratospheric particle concentrations following a large explosive eruption may affect the global atmospheric electrical circuit. It is possible that this might present another, if minor, way by which large volcanic eruptions affect global climate. Samples of grass were collected at Masaya Volcano (Nicaragua; Rhynchelytrum repens and Andropogon angustatus) and the Piton de La Fournaise (around the April 2007 eruptive vent, La Réunion; Vetiveria zizanioides to investigate the controls on major and trace element concentrations in plants around active volcanic vents. Samples were analysed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for a wide range of elements, and atomic absorption spectroscopy for Hg. At Masaya, As, Cu, Mo, Tl and K concentrations in both grass species showed a simple pattern of variability consistent with exposure to the volcanic plume. Similar variability was found in A. angustatus for Al, Co, Cs, Hg and Mg. At the Piton de La Fournaise, the patterns of variability in V. zizanioides were more complex and related to variable exposures to emissions from both the active vent and lava flow. These results suggest that exposure to volcanic emissions is, for many elements, the main control on compositional variability in vegetation growing on active volcanoes. Thus, vegetation may be an important environmental reservoir for elements emitted by volcanoes and should be considered as part of the global biogeochemical cycles.

A small explosive eruption at Masaya volcano on 23 April 2001, in which a number of people were injured, was preceded by a distinct change in plume gas compositions. Open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTS) measurements show that the SO2/HCl molar ratio increased from 1.8 to 4.6 between April 2000 and April/May 2001. The SO2 flux decreased from 11 to 4 kg s-1 over this period. We interpret these changes to be the result of scrubbing of water-soluble magmatic gases by a rejuvenated hydrothermal system. A sequence of M 5 earthquakes with epicentres about 7 km from the volcano occurred in July 2000. These may have altered the fracture permeability close to the magmatic conduit, and caused increased magmatic-hydrothermal interaction, leading eventually to the phreatic explosion in 2001. Continuous FTS measurements at suitable volcanoes could provide useful information in support of eruption prediction and forecasting. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V..

Near-source observations of aerosol size distributions ( 1 [mu]m) ash particles. The number ratio of fine and coarse particles fluctuated strongly within short intervals of time, indicative of changes in the fragmentation energy. Thermal mixing in rivers is a common geophysical phenomenon that controls myriad processes, from aquatic ecological functions to stream and groundwater biogeochemistry. We present high-resolution remotely-sensed temperature distributions of thermal plumes discharging into rivers collected from Yellowstone National Park. Airborne (4 m pixel size) and ground-based (centimetre or better spatial resolution) images corroborate the presence of these mixing zones. They illustrate that thermal discharges in rivers may not be well-mixed with the bulk flow even after traversing distances corresponding to several stream widths. This allows for large thermal gradients (>30°C) to persist between the thermal discharge and the bulk flow. The plumes may have pronounced internal temperature gradients that vary in space and time. The images illustrate the potential of portable high-resolution sensors not only for acquiring observations needed for fundamental understanding of non-isothermal mixing processes but also for providing temperature distributions necessary for understanding many thermally-mediated processes.

Interest in the coastal dynamics of river plumes has mainly focused on large rivers, but plumes from the more numerous smaller rivers have important local consequences and may, in aggregate, be significant contributors to coastal circulation. We studied the dynamics of the plume from the Saco River in Saco Bay, Gulf of Maine, over a 3-year period. The transport and salinity in the region are governed by river discharge, tides, winds, and interaction with the Western Maine Coastal Current. The dynamics of the flow field vary with location within the plume and discharge. The far-field dynamics of the Saco River plume are dominated by inertial processes (hence qualifying it as a small-scale river plume), during times of low discharge, with low salinity water present both up and downstream of the river mouth, but are dominated by rotational processes during times of high discharge (thus qualifying it as a large-scale river plume), with buoyant water primarily advected downshelf. Near-field dynamics are governed by weak, subcritical flow during low discharge but strongly inertial, supercritical flow during high discharge. Offshore movement of the plume is not governed by Ekman dynamics but is instead a result of discharge, wind-induced vertical mixing, and the geography of the coastline and adjacent islands.

Runoff from the urban environment is a major contributor of non-point source contamination for many estuaries, yet the ultimate fate of this stormwater within the estuary is frequently unknown in detail. The relationship between catchment rainfall and estuarine response within the Sydney Estuary (Australia) was investigated in the present study. A verified hydrodynamic model (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Computer Code) was utilised in concert with measured salinity data and rainfall measurements to determine the relationship between rainfall and discharge to the estuary, with particular attention being paid to a significant high-precipitation event. A simplified rational method for calculating runoff based upon daily rainfall, subcatchment area and runoff coefficients was found to replicate discharge into the estuary associated with the monitored event. Determining fresh-water supply based upon estuary conditions is a novel technique which may assist those researching systems where field-measured runoff data are not available and where minor field-measured information on catchment characteristics are obtainable. The study concluded that since the monitored fresh-water plume broke down within the estuary, contaminants associated with stormwater runoff due to high-precipitation events (daily rainfall > 50 mm) were retained within the system for a longer period than was previously recognised.

Hydrographic observations in deep Fram Strait evidence a plume of Storfjorden Brine-enriched Shelf Water in 1986, 1988 and 2002. The plume spreads along the continental slope over 600 km away from its formation area and reaches 2000 m depth. The plume is 30 to 80 m thick in the deep layer of Fram Strait; it is almost 0.4 °C warmer and 0.06 more saline than the ambient water. The velocity of the plume, observed by a moored current meter in Fram Strait, is 12.60±4.70 cm s −1 .The hydrographic properties of the plume are used to study entrainment. A streamtube model with four entrainment parameterizations is applied. Two Froude-number dependent parameterizations lead to mixing mostly happening over the shelf break, where the Froude number is large. This is in agreement with the traditional view, but is inconsistent with the observed temperature and salinity of the Storfjorden plume. Therefore further entrainment assumptions (a constant and a volume-dependent entrainment) are tested. The volume-dependent entrainment scheme yields the best representation of entrainment in the Storfjorden plume. Our results emphasize the necessity of strong mixing in the deep layers in Fram Strait to achieve an agreement with observed properties of the plume.

Summary Hydrodynamic exchange between surface-water and groundwater was studied at a river located within the Rhine Valley in Germany. Piezometric pressure heads and environmental tracers such as temperature, stable isotopes, chloride, X-ray contrast media, and artificial sweetener were investigated within the hyporheic zone and river water plume. Vertical profiles of environmental tracers were collected using multi-level wells within the neutral up-gradient zone, beneath the river bed, and within the horizontal proximal and distal down-gradient zone. Infiltration velocities were calculated from pressure heads, temperature fluctuations and gradients. The amount of river water within groundwater was estimated from vertical profiles of chloride, stable isotopes, and persistent pharmaceuticals. Profiles of stable isotopes and chloride reveal the existence of down-welling within the shallow hyporheic zone that is generated by river bed irregularities. Due to down-welling an above-average migration of river water into the hyporheic zone establishes even under upward hydraulic pressure gradients. The investigated environmental tracers could not distinctively display short-time-infiltration velocities representative for flood waves, while average infiltration velocities calculated over several months are uniform displayed. Based on vertical temperature profiles the down-gradient migration of the river water plume could be observed even after long periods of effluent conditions and over a distance of 200 m from the river bank. X-ray contrast media and artificial sweeteners were observed in high concentrations within the proximal zone, but were not detected at a distance of 200 m from the river bank. Using temperature as environmental tracer within the hyporheic zone may result in overestimating the migration of pollutants within the river water plume as the process of natural attenuation will be neglected. Furthermore, temperature was not able to display the effect of down-welling. Stable isotopes and chloride were found to be suitable environmental tracers to forecast the release and fate of organic contaminants within the hyporheic zone.

Carbon-14 (14C) is of great interest in the assessment of dose due to the nuclear industry because of the biological importance of carbon. We collected atmospheric CO2, rice grain, leafy vegetable, and Japanese mugwort samples at various locations at different time intervals, and measured their 14C concentrations to show the spatiotemporal distribution of 14C around the Tokai reprocessing plant (TRP). The results consistently gave the picture of a 14C dispersion pattern brought about by the prevailing wind in this area, which conveys the 14C plume, and as a result, caused elevated 14C concentrations in the area 2–3 km southwest of the main stack of the TRP. The increases in 14C concentration were, however, quite temporary, and the baseline concentration remained at the background level even in the elevated area. Active volcanoes are thought to be important contributors to the atmospheric mercury (Hg) budget, and this chemical element is one of the most harmful atmospheric pollutants, owing to its high toxicity and long residence time in ecosystems. There is, however, considerable uncertainty over the magnitude of the global volcanic Hg flux, since the existing data on volcanogenic Hg emissions are sparse and often ambiguous. In an attempt to extend the currently limited dataset on volcanogenic Hg emissions, we summarize the results of Hg flux measurements at seven active open-conduit volcanoes; Stromboli, Asama, Miyakejima, Montserrat, Ambrym, Yasur, and Nyiragongo.. Data from the dome-building Soufriere Hills volcano are also reported. Using our determined mercury to SO2 mass ratios in tandem with the simultaneously-determined SO2 emission rates, we estimate that the 7 volcanoes have Hg emission rates ranging from 0.2 to 18 t yr-1 (corresponding to a total Hg flux of ~41 t·yr-1). Based on our dataset and previous work, we propose that a Hg/SO2 plume ratio ~10-5 is best-representative of gas emissions from quiescent degassing volcanoes. Using this ratio, we infer a global volcanic Hg flux from persistent degassing of ~95 t·yr-1 .

We describe a technique for measuring the layer thickness of two interacting buoyant rotating gravity currents. The technique can be used generally to differentiate between water masses in experiments with multiple sources and is used here to simulate the dynamics of two adjacent coastal river plumes. The plumes are generated using two identical fresh water inlets, with blue and red dye indicating upstream and downstream river flows, respectively. Two parameters, normalized intensity and color ratio, are measured with a 3-CCD color video camera and used to develop a two-dimensional (intensity–color ratio) calibration map for layer thickness. The calibration is used successfully to determine the depth field for the combined two-plume system and to differentiate between the two plumes. This technique is applied to compute the volumetric growth of a large eddy near the freshwater source and the transport rate of buoyant fluid away from the source in the coastal current. The validation tests show good agreement between the calculated plume volume and the input fresh water volume.

Are smolt-to-adult return rates (SARs) for wild steelhead (i.e., sea-run rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss ) and wild Snake River spring–summer Chinook salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha ) related to changes in the Columbia River plume at the time that juvenile migrants enter the ocean? We used three-dimensional (3D) numerical models of the baroclinic circulation in the Columbia River estuary–plume–shelf system to simulate within-season variation in plume size and location, comparing the results with SARs for each day that juvenile salmon entered the ocean for 1999–2003. We found that steelhead benefited from the plume environment at a narrow window of time around their ocean entry. However, when large-scale ocean conditions turned unfavorable, the contribution of local plume conditions to the overall variability in steelhead survival became not significant. A similar evaluation revealed that the plume did not affect survival of Chinook salmon, at least at the fine scale of variability considered. The differential response between the two species is consistent with observed and previously reported behavioral characteristics they exhibit. We speculate that steelhead mainly use the plume to move quickly away from coastal habitats and the predation pressures associated with this environment, for a more direct migration than Chinook salmon to ocean habitats in the Gulf of Alaska.

Variation in the summer nanoflagellate community on the continental shelf ecosystem of East China Sea (ECS) is closely coupled with environmental variation due to extension of the Changjiang River plume. Spatial patterns of nanoflagellate abundance were studied in June and August 2003, June 2006 and July 2007 over the ECS shelf. The Changjiang River plume was smaller during the August 2003 and July 2007 cruises than during the rest other 2 cruises. Total nanoflagellates densities varied between 1 and 120 × 102 cells ml−1 with the highest abundances occurring within the Changjiang River plume during large plume periods. In the small plume periods, the range of nanoflagellates abundance was 3–33 × 102 cells ml−1 and the highest abundances were observed during these periods either within the Changjiang River plume or the Yellow Sea Coastal Water (YSCW). During large plume periods, nanoflagellate abundance closely related to changes in salinity and during the small period, abundance was most related to water temperature. This paper summarizes process-oriented field and numerical studies undertaken on the river plume in the partially-mixed Changjiang River estuary. Both estuarine circulation and tidal asymmetry are of great importance to the fine sediment processes. Mean suspended sediment concentration (C) and bottom shear stress are the dominant physical parameters controlling the flocculation and settling velocities (ws) of mud flocs in suspension. Two important physical processes are revealed by acoustic imaging, i.e. (i) the near-bed impulsive resuspension and (ii) the transport processes driven by fine sediment-induced plumes during a spring tide. A turbidity maximum, associated with a suspended sediment front, is observed. Its formation is caused mainly by tidal asymmetry, near-bed periodic tidal resuspension and turbulence suppression by suspension/salinity stratifications. A conceptual sketch of the turbidity maximum is cautiously proposed for the Changjiang River estuary. Four different settling velocity equations, taking flocculation into account, have different effects on the modeled concentration profiles of fine sediment: apparently, Cao and Wang (1994, pp. 252–253) would be the best for spring tide and Thorn (1982, Fig. 3/page 66) for neap tide. Both tidal acceleration and tidal deceleration have strong effects on the concentration profiles of fine sediment within the Changjiang River estuary.

Coastal waters in the northern Gulf of Alaska (GoA) are considered iron-rich and nitrate-poor, in contrast to the iron-poor, high-nitrate, low chlorophyll (HNLC) waters of the central GoA. The degree of mixing between these two regimes, enhanced by mesoscale eddies, is essential to the high productivity observed in the region. As part of a study on iron delivery to the central GoA via mesoscale eddies, extensive work was focused on characterizing the coastal endmember, the Alaska Coastal Current. In surface Alaskan coastal waters between Yakutat and the Kenai Peninsula, dissolved iron concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 4.1 nM with an average of ∼ 2 nM. In contrast, leachable particulate iron concentrations were much higher and more variable, ranging from over 1 μM in the Alsek River plume to less than 5 nM at the base of Cook Inlet. Cross-shelf transport of both surface and subsurface dissolved iron and leachable particulate iron was observed. Throughout the study area, leachable particulate iron values were at least an order of magnitude higher than dissolved values, suggesting that the system's ability to solubilize this large concentration of leachable particulate iron is overwhelmed by the massive input of glacial-derived particulate iron. Nevertheless, suspended leachable particulate iron remains available for exchange to the dissolved phase and is suggested to maintain a relatively constant (∼ 2 nM) source of dissolved iron in the coastal GoA.

As a part of ABC-EAREX2005 (Atmospheric Brown Cloud-East Asia Regional Experiment 2005), particle number size distributions, gaseous species, and meteorological parameters were measured at Gosan Superstation (33.17°N, 126.10°E, 70 m ASL) on Jeju Island in South Korea from March 13 to 30, 2005. Four particle formation and growth events that occurred on 14, 19, 25, and 30 March were discussed in detail. They took place on a synoptic scale under a high pressure system with intervals of 5–6 days. New particle formation and growth processes were very sensitive to the level of precursor gases and preexisting particles. SO 2 was likely to be the dominant precursor gas. Vertical mixing also played a key role by diluting preexisting particles. The fastest growth event occurred on 25 March with the entrainment of free tropospheric air, which must have been influenced by an anthropogenic plume. The particle growth rates ranged from 1.97 to 5.81 nm h − 1 and the condensation sink varied between 1.5 ∙ 10 − 3 and 8.4 ∙ 10 − 2 s − 1 .

We report on ambient atmospheric aerosols present at sea during the Atlantic–Mediterranean voyage of Oceanic II (The Scholar Ship) in spring 2008. A record was obtained of hourly PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 particle size fraction concentrations and 24-h filter samples for chemical analysis which allowed for comparison between levels of crustal particles, sea spray, total carbon, and secondary inorganic aerosols. On-board monitoring was continuous from the equatorial Atlantic to the Straits of Gibraltar, across the Mediterranean to Istanbul, and back via Lisbon to the English Channel. Initially clean air in the open Atlantic registered PM10 levels 120 μg m−3 (hourly mean) when the ship passed through curtains of higher dust concentrations amassed at the frontal edge of the dust cloud. PM1/PM10 ratios ranged from very low during desert dust intrusions (0.3–0.4) to very high during anthropogenic pollution plume events (0.8–1).

A finite element 2D Monte Carlo approach is used to evaluate the sensitivity of groundwater contaminant discharges to a Damkohler number ω and spatial variability in aquifer hydraulic conductivity, initial microbial biomass concentrations, and electron acceptor/donor concentrations. Bioattenuation is most sensitive to spatial variations in incipient biomass and critical electron donors/acceptors for ω ≥ 1 (i.e., when pore-water residence times are high compared to the time needed for microbial growth or contaminant attenuation). Under these conditions, critical reaction processes can become substrate-limited at multiple locations throughout the aquifer; which in turn increases expected contaminant discharges and their uncertainties at monitored transects. For ω ≤ 0.2, contaminant discharge is not sensitive to incipient biomass variations. Physical heterogeneities expedite plume arrival and delay departure at transects and in turn attenuate peak discharges but do not affect cumulative contaminant discharges. Physical heterogeneities do, however, induce transect mass discharge variances that are bimodal functions of time; the first peak beings consistently higher. A simple stream tube model is invoked to explain the occurrence of peaks in contaminant discharge variance.

The Red River valley experienced one of the worst floods in 1997 because of above average snow accumulation, a blizzard during the snowmelt period and high soil moisture conditions. A three-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling system is used to study the impact of the flood on the circulation and contaminant dispersion in Lake Winnipeg. To assess the model performance, we first simulate the circulation and temperature distribution of the lake in 2007 and compare the model results with the observations made in the lake during this period. The model showed considerable skill in reproducing the thermal structure, currents and water levels. The accuracy of these simulations suggests that the model is capable of describing flow and transport of material required for detailed water quality simulations during the flood. During the flood event, Red River plume movement is primarily controlled by the wind-driven currents. The winds from the north confined the plume to a small area near the river mouth.

To understand the effects of increased levels of CO2 on the marine realm, it is possible to study areas where, for natural reasons, there are emissions of CO2 from the seabed. One of these areas is located east of Panarea Island (Aeolian Islands – Southern Tyrrhenian Sea – Italy). Here, the volcanic activity that characterizes the Aeolian archipelago causes a continuous release of CO2 (up to 98% of the total gas) from several vents on the seafloor in shallow water. This area was studied by means of surface techniques and direct SCUBA diving surveys; the data presented refers to a field campaign performed in 2008. To collect the necessary data, some dedicated sampling and measuring techniques were developed for use in an underwater environment. The chemistry of the fluids and their influence on the water body was determined via logs and transects in the field and by gas-chromatographic and liquid-chromatographic laboratory analysis. The flux from some of the main gas vents was also measured directly underwater. Furthermore, some laboratory experiments in a two-layer stratified fluid were conducted to understand the main features of the physical interaction of a gas plume with the surrounding environment. Both field and laboratory experiments show that there is a development of a pseudo-convective cell around the rising plume with the formation of vortices that act as a physical barrier thus reducing the interaction between the plume and the surrounding water.

Field tracer tests and parallel laboratory experiments were performed to establish tracer performance and solute transport velocity in a contaminant plume arising from an unleaded fuel spill in the Chalk aquifer of the southern UK. An initial forced gradient test between injection and pumped wells 24 m apart largely failed for practical reasons; subsequently other down-gradient wells were periodically monitored for tracer breakthrough under natural gradient conditions over the next 10 months, giving tracer velocities of 37–51 m a −1 , consistent with plume development and implying significant retardation of the tracer by fracture–matrix diffusion. Amino-G Acid concentrations fell rapidly during the field tests and laboratory experiments, and indicated that this tracer was susceptible to biodegradation under model plume conditions. Sodium Fluorescein was more strongly sorbed to aquifer materials than Amino-G Acid and exhibited some suppression of fluorescence in the presence of contaminants, but was resistant to biodegradation. Elevated background fluorescence produced an effective detection limit for Sodium Fluorescein of 1.8 μg l −1 in the most contaminated part of the plume.

This study examines the distribution of leachable particulate iron (Fe) in the Columbia River, estuary, and near-field plume. Surface samples were collected during late spring and summer of 2004–2006 as part of four River Influence on Shelf Ecosystems (RISE) cruises. Tidal amplitude and river flow are the primary factors influencing the estuary leachable particulate Fe concentrations, with greater values during high flow and/or spring tides. Near the mouth of the estuary, leachable particulate Fe [defined as the particulate Fe solubilized with a 25% acetic acid (pH 2) leach containing a weak reducing agent to reduce Fe oxyhydroxides and a short heating step to access intracellular Fe] averaged 770 nM during either spring tide or high flow, compared to 320 nM during neap tide, low flow conditions. In the near-field Columbia River plume, elevated leachable particulate Fe concentrations occur during spring tides and/or higher river flow, with resuspended shelf sediment as an additional source to the plume during periods of coastal upwelling and spring tides. Near-field plume concentrations of leachable particulate Fe (at a salinity of 20) averaged 660 nM during either spring tide or high flow, compared to 300 nM during neap tide, low flow conditions. Regardless of tidal amplitude and river flow, leachable particulate Fe concentrations in both the river/estuary and near-field plume are consistently one to two orders of magnitude greater than dissolved Fe concentrations. The Columbia River is an important source of reactive Fe to the productive coastal waters off Oregon and Washington, and leachable particulate Fe is available for solubilization following biological drawdown of the dissolved phase. Elevated leachable Fe concentrations allow coastal waters influenced by the Columbia River plume to remain Fe-replete and support phytoplankton production during the spring and summer seasons.

Data of normalized water-leaving radiance, nLw, obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite at spatial resolution of 250 m (band 1 centered at 645 nm) and 500 m (band 4 at 555 nm) are used to study turbid plumes in coastal waters of southern California during rainstorm events in winter of 2004–2005. Our study area includes San Diego coastal waters, which extend approximately 25 km offshore between Point Loma and 10 km south of the US–Mexican border. These waters are influenced by terrigenous input of particulate and dissolved materials from San Diego and Tijuana watersheds and non-point sources along the shore. Optimum threshold values of satellite-derived normalized water-leaving radiances at both wavebands were established for distinguishing the plume from ambient ocean waters. These threshold values were determined by searching for a maximum correlation between the estimates of satellite-derived plume area calculated using a broad range of nLw values and the environmental variables characterizing rainfall, river discharge, wind, and tides. A correlation analysis involving the amount of precipitated water accumulated during a storm event over the San Diego and Tijuana watersheds was selected as the basis for final determinations of the optimum threshold nLwthr and subsequent calculations of the plume area. By applying this method to a sequence of MODIS imagery, we demonstrate the spatial extent and evolution of the plume during rainstorm events under various conditions of precipitation, river discharge, wind forcing, and coastal currents.

International audience; The measurement of SO2 flux from volcanoes is of major importance for monitoring and hazard assessment purposes, and for evaluation of the environmental impact of volcanic emissions. We propose here a novel technique for accurate and high time resolution estimations of the gas flux. We use two wide field of view UV spectrometers capable of collecting, instantaneously, light from thin parallel cross sections of the whole gas plume, obviating the need for either traversing, scanning or imaging. It enables tracking of inho-mogeneities in the gas cloud from which accurate evaluation of the plume velocity can be made by correlation analysis. The method has been successfully applied on Mt. Erebus volcano (Antarctica). It yields estimations of the plume velocity and gas flux at unprecedented time resolution (1 Hz) and high accuracy (uncertainty of 33%). During a ∼2 h experiment on 26 December 2006, SO2 flux varied between 0.17 and 0.89 ± 0.2 kg s −1 with a vertical plume velocity varying between 1 and 2.5 ± 0.1 m s −1. These measurements provide insight into the short-term variations of the passive degassing of this volcano renowned for its active lava lake. A cyclicity in flux, ranging from about 11-24 min, is evident. We propose two physical mechanisms to explain this degassing pattern, associated to periodic supply of either gas-rich magma or gas alone into the lake. The dual-wide field of view DOAS technique promises better integration of geochemical and geophysical observations and new insights into gas and magma dynamics, as well as processes of magma storage and gas segregation at active volcanoes.

The 2006 eruption of Augustine Volcano, Alaska, began with an explosive phase comprising 13 discrete Vulcanian blasts. These events generated ash plumes reaching heights of 3–14 km. The eruption was recorded by a dense geophysical network including a pressure sensor located 3.2 km from the vent. Infrasonic signals recorded in association with the eruptions have maximum pressures ranging from 13–111 Pa. Eruption durations are estimated to range from 55–350 s. Neither of these parameters, however, correlates with eruption plume height. The pressure record, however, can be used to estimate the velocity and flux of material erupting from the vent, assuming that the sound is generated as a dipole source. Eruptive flux, in turn, is used to estimate plume height, assuming that the plume rises as a buoyant thermal. Plume heights estimated in this way correlate well with observations. Events that exhibit strongly impulsive waveforms are underestimated by the model, suggesting that flow may have been supersonic.

This review describes a range of natural processes leading to the formation of turbulent buoyant plumes, largely relating to volcanic processes, in which there are localized, intense releases of energy. Phenomena include volcanic eruption columns, bubble plumes in lakes, hydrothermal plumes, and plumes beneath the ice in polar oceans. We assess how the dynamics is affected by heat transfer, particle fallout and recycling, and Earth's rotation, as well as explore some of the mixing of the ambient fluid produced by plumes in a confined geometry.

Large scale seawater desalination plants are operated along the coasts and dispose of their brine waste stream by discharging into the sea. As the need for desalinated seawater is steadily increasing, more new desalination plants are planned to be constructed. If desalination plants are closely clustered together along the coastlines, the adverse environmental impacts of the brine effl uent discharges from plants such as these are strongly inter-dependent. A farfi eld mathematical model for continuous brine discharges from two desalination plants on a uniformly sloping beach is presented. The analytical solutions are illustrated graphically to study the interaction of two brine discharge plumes. Asymptotic approximation will be made to the shoreline's brine concentration to evaluate the maximum salinity build-up in the coastal waters.

Momentum balances in the near-field region of a large, tidally pulsed river plume are examined. The authors concentrate on a single ebb tide of the Columbia River plume, using the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) configured to hindcast flow conditions on the Washington and Oregon shelves and in the Columbia River estuary. During ebb, plume-interior streamwise balances are largely between advection, pressure gradient, and frictional forces. Stream-normal balances in this region reduce to centrifugal, cross-stream pressure gradient, and Coriolis terms (i.e., the “gradient wind” balance commonly assumed in river plume bulge investigations). Temporal derivatives are most important at the plume front and as the ebb progresses. Winds were light and contributed little to the force balance. Midebb stress and vertical salt flux were largest at a midplume depth, where stratification and vertical shear were also high, consistent with shear-induced mixing. Internal stress slows the spreading plume considerably. A kinematic description of the spreading process relates lateral spreading to the momentum dynamics and illustrates that plume spreading is largely a competition between the cross-stream pressure gradient and Coriolis forces. However, the very near-field dome of buoyant water is instrumental in setting initial flow pathways.

The distribution of dissolved (soluble and total) and particulate (leachable and total) aluminum was examined in the Columbia River and estuary, in near-field and far-field river plumes, and in adjacent coastal waters of Washington and Oregon during the River Influence on Shelf Ecosystems (RISE) cruise of May/June 2006. Dissolved and particulate aluminum (Al) concentrations were significantly greater in the river than in the coastal waters that mixed to form the plume. Dissolved Al concentrations in the Columbia River (∼80 nM) were low relative to other major rivers. Leachable and total particulate Al concentrations within the river reached concentrations greater than 1000 nM and 18,000 nM, respectively. Dissolved Al within the Columbia River estuary showed a significant removal (∼60%) at salinities between 0 and 10 with salt-induced flocculation of colloidal Al complexes and enhanced particle scavenging being probable explanations for aluminum removal. Dissolved and particulate Al concentrations were significantly greater in near-field plumes relative to surrounding coastal waters. As the plume advected from near-field to far-field away from the river mouth, dilution of the plume with lower dissolved Al surface waters as well as particle scavenging along the flow path appeared to be controlling dissolved Al distributions. Particle settling as well as dilution with lower particle-load waters led to observed decreases in particulate Al as the plume moved from near-field to far-field. However, the percent-leachable particulate aluminum in both near-field and far-field plumes was remarkably constant at ∼7%. Dissolved and particulate Al in a far-field plume over 100 km southwest of the Columbia River mouth were over an order-of-magnitude greater than surrounding waters, illustrating the importance of the Columbia River plume as a mechanism for transporting Al offshore. Aluminum could be used to trace the input of biologically-required elements such as iron into waters off the shelf.

Volcanic plumes interact with the wind at all scales. On smaller scales, wind affects local eddy structure; on larger scales, wind shapes the entire plume trajectory. The polar jets or jetstreams are regions of high [generally eastbound] winds that span the globe from 30 to 60° in latitude, centered at an altitude of about 10 km. They can be hundreds of kilometers wide, but as little as 1 km in thickness. Core windspeeds are up to 130 m/s. Modern transcontinental and transoceanic air routes are configured to take advantage of the jetstream. Eastbound commercial jets can save both time and fuel by flying within it; westbound aircraft generally seek to avoid it. Using both an integral model of plume motion that is formulated within a plume-centered coordinate system (BENT) as well as the Active Tracer High-resolution Atmospheric Model (ATHAM), we have calculated plume trajectories and rise heights under different wind conditions. Model plume trajectories compare well with the observed plume trajectory of the Sept 30/Oct 1, 1994, eruption of Kliuchevskoi Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia, for which measured maximum windspeed was 30–40 m/s at about 12 km. Tephra fall patterns for some prehistoric eruptions of Avachinsky Volcano, Kamchatka, and Inyo Craters, CA, USA, are anomalously elongated and inconsistent with simple models of tephra dispersal in a constant windfield. The Avachinsky deposit is modeled well by BENT using a windspeed that varies with height. Two potentially useful conclusions can be made about air routes and volcanic eruption plumes under jetstream conditions. The first is that by taking advantage of the jetstream, aircraft are flying within an airspace that is also preferentially occupied by volcanic eruption clouds and particles. The second is that, because eruptions with highly variable mass eruption rate pump volcanic particles into the jetstream under these conditions, it is difficult to constrain the tephra grain size distribution and mass loading present within a downwind volcanic plume or cloud that has interacted with the jetstream. Furthermore, anomalously large particles and high mass loadings could be present within the cloud, if it was in fact formed by an eruption with a high mass eruption rate. In terms of interpretation of tephra dispersal patterns, the results suggest that extremely elongated isopach or isopleth patterns may often be the result of eruption into the jetstream, and that estimation of the mass eruption rate from these elongated patterns should be considered cautiously.

Field measurements of salinity, wind and river discharge and numerical simulations of hydrodynamics from 1978 to 1984 are used to investigate the dynamics of the buoyant plume off the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), China during summer. The studies have shown that there are four major horizontal buoyant plume types in summer: Offshore Bulge Spreading (Type I), West Alongshore Spreading (Type II), East Offshore Spreading (Type III), and Symmetrical Alongshore Spreading (Type IV). River mouth conditions, winds and ambient coastal currents have inter-influences to the transport processes of the buoyant plume. It is found that all of the four types are surface-advected plumes by analysing the vertical characteristic of the plumes, and the monthly variations of the river discharge affect the plume size dominantly. The correlation coefficient between the PRE plume size and the river discharge reaches 0.85 during the high river discharge season. A wind strength index has been introduced to examine the wind effect. It is confirmed that winds play a significant role in forming the plume morphology. The alongshore wind stress and the coastal currents determine the alongshore plume spreading. The impact of the ambient currents such as Dongsha Current and South China Sea (SCS) Warm Current on the plume off the shelf has also assessed. The present study has demonstrated that both the river discharge and wind conditions affect the plume evolution.

Solute transport experiments were conducted in a decimeter scale flow cell packed with sand to study the potential for enhanced mixing of solutes in porous media and improved containment of injected plumes under multiple pumping-well driven, time-dependent oscillatory flow with respect to constant flow. Real-time imaging of the colorimetric reaction of Tiron (1,2-dihydroxybenzene-3,5-disulfonic acid) and molybdate was used to quantify mixing, whereas fluorescein was used to better examine plume size. Results from the small scale experiments clearly demonstrated the enhanced mixing of solutes under low Reynolds number oscillatory flow (a factor of 2 with respect to constant flow in homogeneous sand and a factor of 3 in layered sand), as the result of increased contact interface for solute diffusion. Further, the injected solute plume was better contained under oscillatory flow (25% less area with respect to constant flow in homogeneous sand) due to the cancellation of advective transport at each well over time. Enhanced mixing under oscillatory flow may enhance the processes of chemical and biological remediation. Furthermore, improved plume containment under oscillatory flow may require smaller amounts of chemicals to be injected during aquifer remediation.

The Antarctic Slope Front is an oceanic front that appears to be a semi-permanent feature situated above or near long sections of the shelf break of the Antarctic continental shelf. These sections include the shelf break of the Ross and Weddell Seas. It is distinguished by a V-shaped structure, unique to coastal Antarctica, in which isopycnals slope downward from near the surface on both the shallow (continental shelf) and the deep (continental slope) sides, toward the bottom near the upper part of the slope. In the regions where it is observed, the overflow of dense water from the shelf down the slope is observed or presumed to occur. Such overflows entrain fluid from the overlying stratified environment into the downflow, and this entrainment acts as a distributed sink of the overlying fluid. A model of this frontal structure is constructed here, consisting of the downslope flow modelled as a plume, and the overlying fluid governed by quasi-geostrophic dynamics, with the effect of the plume on the latter being represented by a suitable distribution of sinks. The alongslope currents follow from geostrophy and potential vorticity conservation. Two distinct flow regimes are found. In the first regime, a realistic depiction of the two-sided V-shaped structure is obtained, where most of the fluid flowing off the shelf enters the downflow at the top of the slope constituting the shallow side of the V, and fluid from offshore enters the deep side of the V. Alongslope flow in this region is mostly eastward. In the second regime, where most of the fluid flowing off the shelf passes over the downflow, only the shallow side of the V is present, and alongslope flow is westward near the shelf break and eastward further offshore.

A series of 707 measurements at Masaya in 2005, 2006, and 2007 reveals that SO2 emissions 15km downwind of the active vent appear to be ~33% to ~50% less than those measured only 5km from the vent. Measurements from this and previous studies indicate that dry deposition of sulfur from the plume and conversion of SO2 to sulfate aerosols within the plume each may amount to a maximum of 10% loss, and are not sufficient to account for the larger apparent loss measured. However, the SO2 measurement site 15km downwind is located on a ridge over which local trade winds, and the entrained plume, accelerate. Greater wind speeds cause localized dilution of the plume along the axis of propagation. The lower concentrations of SO2 measured on the ridge therefore lead to calculations of lower fluxes when calculated at the same plume speed as measurements from only 5km downwind, and is responsible for the apparent loss of SO2. Due to the importance of SO2 emission rates with respect to hazard mitigation, petrologic studies, and sulfur budget calculations, measured fluxes of SO2 must be as accurate as possible. Future campaigns to measure SO2 flux at Masaya and similar volcanoes will require individual plume speed measurements to be taken at each flux measurement site to compensate for dilution and subsequent calculation of lower fluxes. This study highlights the importance of a comprehensive understanding of a volcano’s interaction with its surroundings, especially for low, boundary layer volcanoes.

Two Delaware coastal plume events are studied using various remote sensing data. Satellite images obtained from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) are processed and enhanced to identify coastal plumes from Delaware Bay. Both visible band and infrared sensors give similar results in terms of the plume boundary. The gradient images of both types of sensors show the twin-front structure near Cape Henlopen, which is also captured in a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image. Six consecutive SST images are used to track plume variability due to tidal forcing and the features of the plume front are found to be different between ebb and flood tides. Five consecutive SST images taken during a pronounced upwelling-favourable wind event show the plume widened and separated offshore, while cooler water upwelled onshore of the separated plume.

Key attributes of the source zone and the expanding dissolved plume at a trichloroethene (TCE) site in Australia were evaluated using trends in groundwater monitoring data along with data from on-line volatile organic compound (VOC) samplers and passive flux meters (PFMs) deployed in selected wells. These data indicate that: (1) residual TCE source mass in the saturated zone, estimated using two innovative techniques, is small ( approximately 10 kg), which is also reflected in small source mass discharge ( approximately 3 g/day); (2) the plume is disconnecting, based on TCE concentration contours and TCE fluxes in wells along a longitudinal transect; (3) there is minimal biodegradation, based on TCE mass discharge of approximately 6 g/day at a plume control plane approximately 175 m from source, which is also consistent with aerobic geochemical conditions observed in the plume; and (4) residual TCE in the vadose zone provides episodic inputs of TCE mass to the plume during infiltration/recharge events. TCE flux data also suggest that the small residual TCE source mass is present in the low-permeability zones, thus making source treatment difficult. Our analysis, based on a synthesis of the archived data and new data, suggests that source treatment is unwarranted, and that containment of the large TCE plume (approximately 1.2 km long, approximately 0.3 km wide; 17 m deep; approximately 2000-2500 kg TCE mass) or institutional controls, along with a long-term flux monitoring program, might be necessary. The flux-based site management approach outlined in this paper provides a novel way of looking beyond the complexities of groundwater contamination in heterogeneous domains, to make intelligent and informed site decisions based on strategic measurement of the appropriate metrics.

Several numerical simulations were conducted to compare the results with analytical solutions given by “Abrupt-Interface Solution for Carbon Dioxide Injection into Porous Media” by M. Dentz and D. Tartakovsky, “Injection and Storage of CO2 in Deep Saline Aquifers: Analytical Solution for CO2 Plume Evolution During Injection” by J. M. Nordbotten et al.

Mt. Etna, in Sicily (Italy), is one of the world's most frequent emitters of volcanic plumes. During the last ten years, Etna has produced copious tephra emission and fallout that have damaged the inhabited and cultivated areas on its slopes and created serious hazards to air traffic. Recurrent closures of the Catania International airport have often been necessary, causing great losses to the local economy. Recently, frequent episodes of ash emission, lasting from a few hours to days, occurred from July to December 2006, necessitating a look at additional monitoring techniques, such as remote sensing. The combination of a ground monitoring system with polar satellite data represents a novel approach to monitor Etna's eruptive activity, and makes Etna one of the few volcanoes for which this surveillance combination is routinely available. In this work, ash emission information derived from an integrated approach, based on comparing ground and NOAA–AVHRR polar satellite observations, is presented. This approach permits us to define the utility of real time satellite monitoring systems for both sporadic and continuous ash emissions. Using field data (visible observations, collection of tephra samples and accounts by local inhabitants), the duration and intensity of most of the tephra fallout events were evaluated in detail and, in some cases, the order of magnitude of the erupted volume was estimated. The ground data vs. satellite data comparison allowed us to define five different categories of Etna volcanic plumes according to their dimensions and plume height, taking into account wind intensity. Using frequent and good quality satellite data in real time, this classification scheme could prove helpful for investigations into a possible correlation between eruptive intensity and the presence and concentration of ash in the volcanic plume. The development and improvement of this approach may constitute a powerful warning system for Civil Protection, thus preventing unnecessary airport closures.

The largest error in determining volcanic gas fluxes using ground based optical remote sensing instruments is typically the determination of the plume speed, and in the case of fixed scanning instruments also the plume height. We here present a newly developed technique capable of measuring plume height, plume speed and gas flux using one single instrument by simultaneously collecting scattered sunlight in two directions. The angle between the two measurement directions is fixed, removing the need for time consuming in-field calibrations. The plume height and gas flux is measured by traversing the plume and the plume speed is measured by performing a stationary measurement underneath the plume. The instrument was tested in a field campaign in May 2005 at Mt. Etna, Italy, where the measured results are compared to wind fields derived from a meso-scale meteorological model (MM5). The test and comparison show that the instrument is functioning and capable of estimating wind speed at the plume height.

The simultaneous quantitative determination of two-dimensional bromine monoxide (BrO) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) distributions in volcanic gas plumes is described. Measurements at the fumarolic field on the island Vulcano (autumn 2004) and in the plume of Mt. Etna volcano (spring 2005) were carried out with an Imaging DOAS instrument. The SO2 fluxes of several fumaroles were estimated from two-dimensional distributions of SO2. Additionally, the first two-dimensional distributions of BrO within a volcanic plume were successfully retrieved. Slant column densities of up to 2.6 × 1014 molecules per square centimetre were detected in the plume of Mt. Etna. The investigation of the BrO/SO2 ratio, calculated from the two-dimensional distributions of SO2 and BrO, shows an increase from the centre to the edge of the volcanic plume. These results have significance for the involvement of ozone during BrO formation processes in volcanic emissions.

Increased mass losses from the Greenland ice sheet and inferred contributions to sea-level rise have heightened the need for hydrologic observations of meltwater exiting the ice sheet. We explore whether temporal variations in ice-sheet surface hydrology can be linked to the development of a downstream sediment plume in Kangerlussuaq Fjord by comparing: (1) plume area and suspended sediment concentration from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery and field data; (2) ice-sheet melt extent from Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) passive microwave data; and (3) supraglacial lake drainage events from MODIS. Results confirm that the origin of the sediment plume is meltwater release from the ice sheet. Interannual variations in plume area reflect interannual variations in surface melting. Plumes appear almost immediately with seasonal surface-melt onset, provided the estuary is free of landfast sea ice. A seasonal hysteresis between melt extent and plume area suggests late-season exhaustion in sediment supply. Analysis of plume sensitivity to supraglacial events is less conclusive, with 69% of melt pulses and 38% of lake drainage events triggering an increase in plume area. We conclude that remote sensing of sediment plume behavior offers a novel tool for detecting the presence, timing and interannual variability of meltwater release from the ice sheet.

Gas emissions from Tatun volcanic group, northern Taiwan, were studied for the first time using a multi-component gas analyser system (Multi-GAS) in combination with Giggenbach flask methods at fumaroles and mud pools at Da-you-keng (DYK) and Geng-tze-ping (GZP). CO 2 /S molar ratios observed at DYK ranged from 3-17, similar ratios were observed using a Multi-GAS sensor box of 8-16. SO 2 at GZP was low, higher concentrations were observed at DYK where SO 2 /H 2 S ratios were close to 1 for both methods. A lower CO 2 / H 2 S ratio was measured via Giggenbach flask sampling (7.2) than was found in the plume using the gas sensor at GZP (9.2). This may reflect rapid oxidation of H 2 S as it mixes with background air. Gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) levels were observed in the fumarole gases using a portable mercury spectrometer. These are the first such measurements of mercury at Tatun. Mean GEM concentrations in the fumarole plumes were ∼20 ng m -3 , with much higher concentrations observed close to the ground (mean [GEM] 130 and 290 ng m -3 at DYK and GZP, respectively). The GEM in the fumarole plume was elevated above concentrations in industrial/urban air in northern Taiwan and the increase in GEM observed when the instrument was lowered suggests high levels of mercury are present in the surrounding ground surface. The GEM/CO 2 (10 -8 ) and GEM/S (10 -6 ) ratios observed in the fumarole gases were comparable to those observed at other low-temperature fumaroles. Combining the Hg/CO 2 ratio with a previous CO 2 flux value for the area, the annual GEM flux from the Tatun field is estimated as 5-50 kg/year. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present satellite data from the Niagara River plume showing that a large eddy, or bulge, forms and grows in the plume near the mouth of the river. The plume consists of a semicircular bulge region immediately offshore of the mouth and a narrow current that propagates east along the shoreline. During the low-wind period from 27 to 29 May 1999, the width of the bulge more than doubled and the current width increased only slightly. Approximately one-third of the Niagara River water accumulated in the bulge near the mouth during this period, implying that the transport rate in the shore-parallel current was reduced to two-thirds of the river discharge rate. The effective radius and the growth rate of the bulge computed from the satellite images was in good agreement with previous laboratory results and a numerical model of the Niagara River plume. This is the first field evidence of the unsteadiness of the bulge.

The emission rate of carbon dioxide escaping from the summit of Kīlauea Volcano, Hawaiʻi, proved highly variable, averaging 4900 ± 2000 metric tons per day (t/d) in June–July 2003 during a period of summit inflation. These results were obtained by combining over 90 measurements of COSPEC-derived SO 2 emission rates with synchronous CO 2 /SO 2 ratios of the volcanic gas plume along the summit COSPEC traverse. The results are lower than the CO 2 emission rate of 8500 ± 300 t/d measured by the same method in 1995–1999 during a period of long-term summit deflation [Gerlach, T.M., McGee, K.A., Elias, T., Sutton, A.J. and Doukas, M.P., 2002. Carbon dioxide emission rate of Kīlauea Volcano: Implications for primary magma and the summit reservoir. Journal of Geophysical Research-Solid Earth, 107(B9): art. no.-2189.]. Analysis of the data indicates that the emission rates of the present study likely reflect changes in the magma supply rate and residence time in the summit reservoir. It is also likely that emission rates during the inflation period were heavily influenced by SO 2 pulses emitted adjacent to the COSPEC traverse, which biased CO 2 /SO 2 ratios towards low values that may be unrepresentative of the global summit gas plume. We conclude that the SO 2 pulses are consequences of summit re-inflation under way since 2003 and that CO 2 emission rates remain comparable to, but more variable than, those measured prior to re-inflation.

We perform a parametric and comparative study on three different tephra dispersal models (FALL3D, HAZMAP, and TEPHRA) applied to two different scenarios expected for Etna volcano. These scenarios are similar to the recent 2002–03 and 1990 Etna eruptions and correspond, respectively, to a weak and to a strong plume eruption. For each model and scenario we perform a parametric study on several inputs in order to quantify how a variation on a given input parameter ( i.e. an uncertainty on the model input) affects the results of the model. The study considers topographic effects, different description for the eruption column, column height influence, different fits for terminal velocities of particles, the effect of particle shape and, finally, the variation of the modal grain-size. Model differences are quantified by means of a normalized distance that indicates how close, in average, the results from two different simulations are. We also compare predictions from different models to determine under which circumstances the use of a more elaborated model is justified. Results from our parametric study show that output of the models can be strongly sensitive to the uncertainties and assumptions on input parameters, such as mainly mass eruption rate, column height, distribution of the mass along the column, bulk grain-size distribution. This highlights that, for optimal forecasts, is urgent to improve the description of these parameters and of some important physical processes like fragmentation and eruption column dynamics. Further, differences between models are often lower than those due to the uncertainties of input parameters, although they become more high in simulating weak plumes. Thus the choice of the model mainly depends on the kind of application such as the need to simulate the evolution of volcanic clouds in the atmosphere. Finally, the use of both a semi-analytical (HAZMAP) and a fully computational (FALL3D) model for inverting field data of the 2001 Etna eruption showed that the best-fit parameters are similar for both models, and are consistent with values obtained using independent techniques.

A field program was implemented on a fringing reef located on Oahu, Hawaii, to investigate the dispersion characteristics of near-bed dye plumes, tracked using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) with an onboard fluorometer. The combination of moored and AUV-based measurements collected synchronously in this study allowed us not only to observe the dispersion characteristics of individual plumes, but importantly to isolate the flow structures directly responsible for dispersion under a variety of forcing conditions. The evolution of several plumes was observed, each influenced by different wave (surface and internal), current, and stratification conditions. The observed dispersion was caused by both turbulent dispersion and plume meandering. Lateral turbulent dispersion coefficients were roughly an order of magnitude greater than previous observations on sandy beach sites, which is likely attributable to the enhanced surface wave-induced mixing and the large physical roughness of the reef. For a large portion of the 2-week experiment the effects of meandering dominated over turbulent dispersion (on average 1.5 times greater). The meandering was the result of large-scale cross-reef current variability. Moored thermistor chain data on the forereef suggest that the source of this cross-reef flow variability were packets of solitary waves that accompanied the propagation of baroclinic bores up the reef slope. Baroclinic bores dissipated before they reached the inner reef when surface wave conditions were large, resulting in the reduction of plume meandering during this period.

Passive (nonpumped) wells filled with reactive media may be an effective alternative to permeable reactive barriers for treating contaminated groundwater in deep aquifers. This study's objective was to evaluate alternative passive well configurations for treating contaminated groundwater in a simulated aquifer. Six configurations of 17 wells were tested, each well screened across the saturated zone. Passive wells occupied various locations on monitoring transects. Five configurations involved one or more monitoring transects perpendicular to regional groundwater flow, positioned downgradient of a contaminant plume. In a sixth configuration, monitoring transects were ±45° to groundwater flow, joined downgradient of the contaminant plume. A numerical mass transport model, accounting for advection and hydrodynamic dispersion, tested the ability of each passive well configuration to reduce contaminant concentrations and prevent offsite contaminant migration. For a fixed number of wells, relatively effective strategies include: (a) spanning the lateral width of a contaminant plume; (b) multiple monitoring transects, with relatively close well spacing along upgradient transects; and (c) 45° monitoring transects.
