The Tampanchi Ultramafic–Mafic Complex (TUMC), located in the central segment of the Cordillera Real (Ecuador), is an oval-shaped intrusive body of approximately 18 km2 emplaced within a Cretaceous metavolcano-sedimentary sequence. Field investigations, zircon geochronology, mineral and whole-rock elemental and isotopic compositions constrain the nature of the parental magma as well as the physical conditions of emplacement, age of crystallization and tectonic setting of formation of the TUMC. The Complex consist of wehrlite and olivine-hornblende clinopyroxenite crosscut by hornblende gabbros and minor dikes/veins of diorite and granite. Hornblendites formed mainly at the contact between the olivine-hornblende clinopyroxenite and the intrusive hornblende gabbros by reaction-replacement processes. Geochemical data for both the wehrlites and pyroxenites define a trend with dominantly olivine and clinopyroxene accumulation, whereas a second trend is formed by hornblende gabbros that differentiated to leucocratic rocks, with amphibole as the dominant fractionating mafic phase. The trace elements show enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements, depletion in high field strength elements (Nb, Zr, Ti) and P, and enrichment in Pb, Sr and Ba relative to primitive mantle, indicating subduction-related parental liquids. The Nd and Sr isotopic composition suggests a uniform mantle source metasomatized by subducted crustal components. Thermobarometric estimations constrain emplacement and crystallization at intermediate to shallow continental crust levels (∼12.5 km depth) of hydrated basaltic melt under oxygen fugacity conditions above the nickel-nickel oxide buffer (ΔNNO = 0 to 2). Zircon SHRIMP U-Th-Pb age data constrain crystallization at 75.1–76.0 Ma, with scarce inherited zircons that record limited recycling of the Cordillera Real basement. These results confirm magmatic arc activity at the continental margin of South America during the late Cretaceous as a result of an E-dipping subduction zone prior to the accretion of the Ecuadorian-Colombian-Caribbean oceanic plateau, and support simultaneous double subduction at the northwest margin of South America during the Cretaceous. The age and tectonic history of the chromite-mineralised Bacuri Complex, a layered mafic–ultramafic intrusion emplaced into Archean terranes of the Guyana Shield in the Amazonian Craton, are here investigated. The stratigraphy of the Bacuri Complex consists of an Ultramafic Zone composed of interlayered metaperidotites and chromitites and two mafic zones composed of metamafic rocks (amphibolites). In this study we present whole-rock lithogeochemical data integrated with zircon U-Pb isotopic and trace-element data from amphibolites from the Mafic Zone. The investigated amphibolites consist of hornblende + plagioclase ± diopside ± biotite with whole-rock compositions like noritic rocks of Archean layered intrusions. These samples are representative of amphibolites with variable proportions of hornblende and plagioclase, interpreted as resulting from amphibolite facies metamorphism of interlayered norite and leuconorite. We suggest that progressive fractionation of a primitive parental magma led to the formation of plagioclase and orthopyroxene cumulates in the mafic zones. We found that zircons from three metanorite samples comprise euhedral crystals with oscillatory zoning (interpreted to preserve a magmatic crystallisation age), as well as variably recrystallised metamorphic zircons. Their U-Pb 207Pb/206Pb ages span over 682 million years, from 3628 Ma to 2942 Ma. Trace element data suggest that magmatic zircons precipitated from late-stage magmatic fluids at ∼ 3.34 Ga (3343 ± 3.5 Ma weighted average age, n = 48, MSWD = 1.3), which defines the Bacuri Complex as one the oldest and best-preserved layered intrusions known. We show that fluid-mediated coupled dissolution-precipitation recrystallisation during metamorphism altered the composition and ages of magmatic zircons. We could not accurately define the number and age of metamorphic events in the 2942–3379 Ma age interval of metamorphic or ‘disturbed’ zircon domains. Our results indicate that continental crust was already established in the Amazonian craton in the Paleoarchean and possibly in the Eoarchean and that it has been reworked since at least the Mesoarchean.

The Himalayan orogen, resulting from the Early Cenozoic collision of the Indian and Asian plates, is an ideal vehicle to study active orogenic processes and test geodynamic models of how the crust responds to collisional orogeny. This paper focused on migmatitic high-pressure (HP) mafic granulite and associated leucosome from the Greater Himalayan Crystallines (GHC) in the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis (EHS) in order to understand the conditions and timescales over which high-grade rocks and partial melts were produced during the Himalayan orogeny. Combining with previous study results from the Western and Central Himalayas and Trans-Himalayan magmatic arc, we obtained the following conclusions: (1) The mafic granulites from the EHS underwent HP and high-temperature (HT) granulite facies metamorphism and partial melting, with peak metamorphic conditions of 15–17 kbar and 820–880 °C. The GHC, at least its western part of the EHS, underwent coherent HP granulite-facies metamorphism. (2) The HP mafic granulites experienced long-lived dehydration melting of amphibole from ~40 Ma to ~20 Ma during prograde metamorphism and generated up to ~16 vol% partial melt. The variable degrees of dehydration melting of the HP mafic, pelitic and felsic granulites in the EHS generated voluminous granitic melts with distinct compositions, and provided the source for the Himalayan granites. (3) Peak metamorphic pressure of the GHC gradually decreases, whereas the metamorphic temperature progressively increases from the Western to Eastern Himalayas. This indicates that the Indian continental crust deeply subducted into the mantle in the Western Himalaya after the Indo-Asia collision, whereas the Indian crust underthrusted or relaminated beneath the Asian continental crust, and formed the thickened lower crust in the Central and Eastern Himalayas and Gangdese arc. (4) The melts derived from the underthrusted Indian crust probably resulted in isotopic compositional enrichment of the Early Cenozoic mantle- and juvenile crust-derived magmatic rocks of the Gangdese arc.

International audience; We present a new numerical modelling study of subduction initiation at (hyper-extended) magma-poor and magma-rich continental passive margins. In particular, we test how the structure and rheological stratification of these two end-member types control the formation and thermo-mechanical evolution of subduction zones. The serpentinization of mantle lithosphere in a magma-poor continental rifted margin leads to rheological decoupling at the base of the continental crust, which induces shear localization during subsequent shortening. Under these conditions, a shear zone propagates into the mantle lithosphere and leads to subduction initiation at the transition between ocean and passive margin. In contrast, a magma-rich rifted continental margin is rheologically coupled, which creates a buttressing effect and transfer of deformation into the oceanic domain during shortening, where the subduction zone initiates. These results are quantitatively compared and in agreement with the geological record of subduction initiation in the Alps and Dinarides – Hellenides, where the relics of end-member types of continental rifted margins of the same Adriatic micro-continent bordering the Alpine Tethys and Neotethys oceans, respectively, are observed.

Intra-oceanic arcs are potential candidates that generate Earth’s continental crust, and serve as active sites for the mixing of juvenile arc and mature continental material. However, whether continental fragments occur beneath intra-oceanic arcs, and how continental materials are involved in island arc magmas remain equivocal. Here we report zircon U-Pb-Hf-O isotopes and whole-rock elemental and Sr-Nd isotopic data on the Silurian island arc gabbro from the southeastern Jiamusi Block in NE China. The gabbro was emplaced at ca. 435–429 Ma associated with the northward intra-oceanic subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean, and belongs to the eastern extension of the Bainaimiao arc system. Elevated zircon δ18O (+5.5‰ to +7.9‰) and variable eHf(t) (-2.1 to +4.0) values, and negative whole rock eNd(t) (-1.1 to −1.6) values, suggest an enriched mantle component generated by pelagic and terrigenous sediments input into the mantle wedge. The contribution of terrigenous sediments, together with the recognition of Paleoproterozoic crustal rocks, proves for the first time that continental fragments existed beneath the intra-oceanic arc. In conjunction with published data, we propose that that Tarim Craton-type scattered continental fragments occurred within the Bainaimiao arc system, and that they not only facilitated the initiation of oceanic-oceanic subduction through increasing buoyancy, but also account for the old continental zircon and enriched isotopic variations of the young arc rocks. Our study highlights a fossil example that could help better quantify the scale and role of continental fragments in the origin and evolution of intra-oceanic arcs.

The connection between multi-plate convergence and Mesozoic metallogenic explosion in the western Pacific continental margin is a frontier theme of research. A key to understanding of the Mesozoic tectonics in South China involves the spatio-temporal distribution and tectonic control of Mesozoic deposits in this region. The Zhejiang Province in South China is located in the middle segment of the western Pacific metallogenic belt, where tectono-magmatic and metallogenic activities during the Yanshanian Period (Jurassic-Cretaceous) were frequent and intense. This region is an ideal window for investigating oceanic slab subduction and recycling, continental marginal magmatism, deep geological processes, and mineralization in the western Pacific continental margin. Here we present a comprehensive synthesis of information from petrology, isotope geochronology, geochemistry, igneous geology, and tectonics of the Zhejiang metallogenic deposits to evaluate the spatio-temporal distribution and formation mechanism of the Yanshanian mineral deposits. The early Yanshanian deposit types are mainly Fe or Pb–Zn ores, which are distributed in the northwestern Zhejiang region. The ore-bearing magmatic rocks in this period are highly fractionated I-type granites, which originated from continental crust together with depleted mantle materials. In the mid-Yanshanian, Mo deposits are the main type and are distributed throughout the region. Magma types in this period are relatively diverse, most are S-type granites, which were derived from the remelting of old continental crust and mixed with juvenile mantle-derived and crust-derived magmas. The late Yanshanian deposit types are mainly W–Sn, which are distributed in the southeastern part of the Zhejiang Province. The ore-bearing magma has the characteristics of A-type granite with mantle origin. Combined with numerical simulation, we discuss the deep processes of Mesozoic metallogenic explosion in South China. We correlate the early Yanshanian mineralization with flat subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Plate and the foundering of the oceanic slab; the mid-Yanshanian mineralization is associated with the destruction and thinning of lithospheric mantle caused by mantle melting related to the sharp subduction; and the late Yanshanian mineralization witnessed a decrease in the volume of mantle materials and the eastward retreat of the trenches.

Zircon is often used to study granites (sensu lato) and continental crust because it is very resistant and can be analyzed for various isotope systems that provide time and source information about their parental melts. Granites with different petrological histories have distinct bulk-rock silicon isotope compositions but it is unclear if these differences are also detectable in zircon because of superimposed fractionation effects (e.g., related to temperature, silica content, magmatic processes). The present study explores the Si isotope signatures of zircon from various granite types to constrain their isotope fractionation behavior and uses them as igneous petrogenetic tools, and possibly as granite source discriminators when zircon is found in detrital sediments. Our results show that although Si isotope compositions in zircon can be modified by secondary (post-crystallization) processes such as alteration/weathering and metamorphism, they are primarily controlled by zircon-melt isotope fractionation, which depends on both zircon crystallization temperature and magma silica content. Once these fractionation effects are understood and filtered out, a pattern emerges between Si isotope signatures of zircons from different granite types that is consistent with theoretical and experimental results as well as with known Si isotope differences at the bulk-rock scale. Silicon isotope ratios in zircon can track magma evolution (e.g., temperature and SiO2 changes) and, hence, reveal complex processes that involved magma mingling, fractional crystallization, and/or multiple sources. This study, therefore, illustrates that Si isotopes in zircon can be used to investigate magma evolution and represents a useful complement to existing techniques in granite studies involving zircon (e.g., U-Th-Pb, Lu-Hf and O isotopes) provided that it is not used as a stand-alone technique.

The origin of enriched mantle 1 (EM1) component in the mantle has long been debated. EM1 source of basalts has been variously attributed to recycled sub-continental lithosphere, recycled lower continental crust, or recycled oceanic crust plus pelagic sediments. Molybdenum stable isotope systematics has the potential to resolve this debate, because of the significant isotopic differences between mantle and crustal reservoirs. Here we present molybdenum isotope data for EM1-type continental intraplate basalts from Nuominhe (NMH), Northeast China. The NMH basalts display significant variations in both δ98/95Mo (98Mo/95Mo ratio relative to NIST SRM 3134, −0.49 to −0.15‰) and Mo/Ce (0.009 to 0.037), and strong correlations between δ98/95Mo, Mo/Ce and Hf isotope and trace elements. EM1 end-member of the NMH basalts shows the lightest δ98/95Mo and lowest Mo/Ce values. The involvement of continental crust and sub-continental lithospheric mantle cannot account for the light Mo isotopic compositions of the basalts. By contrast, the recycled oceanic crust with pelagic sediments, characterized by low δ98/95Mo and Mo/Ce values, is the satisfactory candidate for the EM1 component in the NMH basalts. At convergent plate margin, part of the continental crust can be subducted and exhumed. During continental subduction a pre-existing crust is reworked. Remnants of an older orogen are recycled and subjected to (ultra)-high-pressure metamorphism. During subduction, polycyclic rocks undertake a second metamorphic cycle, whereas monocyclic rocks are metamorphosed for the first time. In reworked rocks the pre-subduction record is overprinted and partially or completely lost. Despite this difficulty, reconstructing the pre-subduction history of the recycled crust is crucial, because pre-subduction characters (such as H2O content) can strongly influence how rocks respond to reworking during subduction. The Dora-Maira Massif is worldwide renowned as a (ultra)-high-pressure continental terrane. However, its northern part remained essentially unexplored in recent times. In this thesis work the northern Dora-Maira Massif is used as a case study to investigate recycling of continental crust. The aim is to constrain what type of crust is subducted and exhumed and to unravel the role of fluids during subduction of polycyclic material. Field work, petrology, thermodynamic modelling and geochronology are integrated. New field and geochronological evidence indicate that the northern Dora-Maira Massif displays an internal architecture more complex than what previously thought. It is subdivided in several tectonic units likewise the southern Dora-Maira Massif. Chemical and isotopic records of the reworked rocks reveal a pre-Alpine history spanning from the Lower Palaeozoic to the Mesozoic. A polycyclic basement preserves relicts of a pre-Alpine Barrovian metamorphism connected with the Variscan orogenesis. The absence of granulite-facies partially molten pre-Alpine rocks indicates that only the upper crust was reworked in the Dora-Maira Massif. Thermodynamic modelling indicates that polycyclic micaschists were rehydrated between the Variscan and the Alpine peak metamorphism. Polycyclic garnet texture and chemistry and metamorphic zircon record a main episode of fluid infiltration at the end of the Variscan cycle and not during the Alpine cycle. Pre-Alpine re-hydration of the upper crust allowed high-pressure re-equilibration during subduction.

Many of the peculiar features of the Mesoproterozoic (1.6–1.0 Ga) are related to the assembly of the first supercontinent Nuna, and some may not be distinctive of this time period. A high frequency of A-type granites at 1.6–1.4 Ga may be due, in part, to sampling biases. The overall increase in frequency in A-type granites beginning at 1.9 Ga may track the propagation of plate tectonics especially in the Great Proterozoic Accretionary Orogen. Increases in alkali and related elements in granitoids at 2.4–2.0 Ga may reflect widespread propagation of subduction as plate tectonics spread around the globe, and increases in HREE, Nb, Ti and Sc in granitoids may be related to decreasing importance of restitic garnet in granitoid sources as Earth transitioned from TTG to calc-alkaline magmatic regimes. Related to possible global mantle events at 1.9, 1.0 and 0.6 Ga are peaks in frequency of LIP and zircon ages related to supercontinent assembly. Mesoproterozoic paleomagnetic data that require at least 12 passive margins during this time. An increase in plate speed with time since 2 Ga may reflect a decreasing viscosity contrast across the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary in response to a cooling mantle or/and thinning of the lithosphere and corresponding increases in heat flux with time. A relatively constant 87Sr/86Sr of seawater between 1.9 and 1.0 Ga may have resulted from a balance between weathered juvenile and reworked crustal sources as well as enhanced seafloor weathering of oceanic basalts. Mostly positive eHf(t) in detrital zircons and eNd(t) granitoids during the Mesoproterozoic suggest significant juvenile crustal input. However, the sparsity of crust of this age today probably results from recycling of large volumes of continental crust into the mantle in peripheral accretionary orogens during the breakup of Nuna at 1.4–1.2 Ga.

In this work, we calculated the Curie Point Depth (CPD) for the Brazilian Equatorial Margin using the Fourier and continuous wavelet (CWT) transforms considering a linear inversion for random and fractal magnetization models with four different magnetic datasets. After comparing our results with Curie maps reported by previous studies, we concluded that the more consistent Curie isotherm was obtained by applying the random model based on CWT to the Brazilian Equatorial Margin Magnetic Map dataset, a compilation of airborne and marine magnetic surveys complemented with magnetic anomaly data extracted from the World Digital Magnetic Anomaly Map in the deep-water oceanic domain. In addition, we estimated heat flow using CPD results and compare with a global heat flow model based on geothermal measurements. In the continental domain, Curie values range from 18 to 35 km, shallowing westwards until reaching anomalously 10 km in the Tocantins Province. In turn, the heat flow decreases eastwards from 88 to 58 mW/m2 as the Curie depth increases within the continental crust. Meanwhile, in the deep-water oceanic domain, the heat flow is overall higher (between 72 and 87 mW/m2), indicating a younger and warmer oceanic crust, whereas the Curie isotherm is shallower, varying between 10 and 30 km. Even so, it is deeper than Moho, suggesting a magnetized lithospheric mantle.

The timing of the emergence of subaerial landmasses is equivocally constrained as post-Archean and continues to be a much-debated issue. In this study, we document exceptionally 18O-depleted (δ18O < 4.7‰) Mesoarchean to early Neoarchean magmatism in India that shows a similarity with the coeval low-δ18O magmas reported from Australia, South America, and northern China. Such global-scale low-δ18O magmatism would require high-temperature meteoric water–rock interaction in the uppermost crust synchronous with magma generation, necessitating the emergence of a substantial volume of the continental crust. The timing of this low-δ18O magmatism coincides with the development of extensive, subaerial large igneous provinces, a downward shift in δ18O and Δ17O values in pelitic rocks, the rise of normalized 87Sr/86Sr in seawater, and an intermittent upsurge in the proportion of atmospheric oxygen. We propose that the emergence of substantial volumes of continental crust initiated at ca. 3.2 Ga and peaked at 2.8–2.6 Ga, facilitating the generation of globally distributed low-δ18O magmas, and this event can be linked to the first appearance of atmospheric oxygen.

Here we present zircon U–Pb–Hf and whole-rock major and trace element studies of eastern Ningzhen W-Mo-ore-related magmatic rocks, Yushan and Longwangshan granitic rocks, to constrain their form timing, magma sources, and tectonic settings. The results showed that the two plutons were formed in the Early Cretaceous with 206Pb/238U ages of 107.8 ± 1.2 and 105.2 ± 1.5 Ma (206Pb/238U), respectively. The trapped/residual zircons are mainly distributed in 2.0–2.5 Ga. The two intrusions are characterized by high silicon (68.60–73.99%), high aluminum (13.56–15.02%), high Mg# (47–55), high Sr, Sr/Y, LaN/YN, and low Yb, falling into high Mg# adakitic rock region. The zircon eHf (t) values of the two intrusions range from −24.8 to −13.2, indicating an ancient continental crust in their magma sources. The average Ti-in-zircon temperature is 689 °C, slightly higher than those of other high-Mg adakitic rocks in the lower Yangtze River belt, but lower than those of high-Mg adakitic rocks in the Southern Tanlu Fault (STLF). Zircon Ce4+/Ce3+ show low oxygen fugacity (LWS-1: 3–400, average 92; sample ZYS-4: 9–382, average 93). These geochemical features indicate a thickened lower continental crust in the Eastern Ningzhen region in a subduction setting. Comparing the geochemical characteristics of the eastern Ningzhen to the western Ningzhen and other areas in the Lower Yangtze River Metallogenic Belt (LYRMB) and the high-Mg ore-barren adakitic rocks of the STLF, we propose that the magmatic rocks from eastern Ningzhen may be mainly from a thickened lower continental crust that hybridized with a very small part of mantle sources, while the west Ningzhen magmatic rocks may have experienced a higher degree of mantle contaminations in their source. The metallogenic differences between the eastern (W–Mo) and western (Cu–Fe–Pb–Zn) parts of Ningzhen also indicate different proportions of crustal materials in their magma source.

One of the prevailing hypotheses for the origin of the Younger Dryas (YD) cooling event is that it resulted from a bolide impact or airburst. Purported impact markers peak at or near the YD basal boundary layer at Northern Hemisphere locations. In this study, the 187Os/188Os ratios and highly siderophile element (HSE: Os, Ir, Ru, Pt, Pd, Re) abundances in a well-dated sediment section through the Younger Dryas at the Debra L. Friedkin site, Texas are reported. Unradiogenic 187Os/188Os peaks, which could be mantle-derived or extraterrestrial, have been found above, within, and below the YD basal boundary layer. Mass balance mixing models using chondrites or iron meteorites with upper continental crust fail to duplicate the chondrite-normalized HSE patterns of the sediment samples. These HSE signatures in the Friedkin site section replicate those found in Hall’s Cave, Texas. The new results here thus independently confirm that the HSE abundances in the unradiogenic Os layers are likely a fingerprint of volcanic gas aerosols derived from large Plinian eruptions and not extra-terrestrial materials. To better constrain the lithological origins of YD sediments from the Friedkin and Hall’s Cave sites, Texas, trace elements are presented here. The rare earth elements (REE) patterns and Ir, Ni, Ti and Zr abundances are also characterized with terrestrial signatures as opposed to impact melt rocks. An age profile correlation between the two study sites, further shows that three unradiogenic Os peaks overlap in time. The results are inconsistent with the extraterrestrial hypothesis and support instead an episodic and volcanic origin for the observed geochemical anomalies at the Debra L. Friedkin and Hall’s Cave sites, Texas.

Previously unrecognized mafic and felsic plutonic rocks, formerly interpreted as an anatectic part of the amphibolite-eclogite Marianske Lazně Complex (MLC, Bohemian Massif) were examined together with a possible upper-crustal equivalent represented by the Cista pluton intruding continental crust farther east. These plutonic rocks were studied by whole-rock geochemistry (major and trace elements, Sr-Nd isotopes) and zircon U-Pb geochronology. The MLC magmatic rocks range from pyroxene-amphibole gabbro to trondhjemite and oligoclasite. The Cista pluton consists of porphyritic granitoids. The calc-alkaline nature of these rocks, relative enrichment of fluid-mobile elements (including large-ion lithophile elements), strong fractionation of light rare earth elements over heavy rare earth elements and depletion of high field strength elements are evidence for active margin magmatism. U-Pb zircon dating indicates that the magmatism was Mid-Devonian in both the MLC (ca. 385 Ma) and Cista pluton (ca. 390 up to ca. 365 Ma). Both magmatic units show inherited cores probably linked to recycling of crustal material. Sr-Nd isotopic compositions indicate that the gabbro formed from a depleted MORB mantle source composition with a small contribution of a subduction and crustal component. A three-stage geodynamic model is proposed: 1) ca. 390–380 Ma recycling of a high-pressure accretionary wedge and migration of arc melts into more distal parts of the upper continental plate, 2) ca. 380–370 Ma compression and thickening of the accretionary wedge-arc edifice, and 3) ca. 370–365 Ma development of a giant east-dipping detachment that reworked the whole edifice in the west and also involved emplacement of the supracrustal Cista pluton along antithetic west-dipping shear zone in the east. The studied magmatic rocks record a Mid-Devonian magmatic arc related to the formation of a subduction wedge stacked beneath the upper plate that was followed by formation of a second and independent Carboniferous continental arc further east.

Antarctica has traditionally been considered continental inside the coastline of ice and bedrock. In our recent study (Artemieva and Thybo, 2020) we reconsider the conventional extent of this continent and demonstrate that 1/3 of Antarctica is not a continent. Here we present a brief summary of our results.

Prior studies have hypothesized that some polluted white dwarfs record continent-like granitic crust--which is abundant on Earth and perhaps uniquely indicative of plate tectonics. But these inferences derive from only a few elements, none of which define rock type. We thus present the first estimates of rock types on exoplanets that once orbited polluted white dwarfs--stars whose atmospheric compositions record the infall of formerly orbiting planetary objects--examining cases where Mg, Si, Ca and Fe are measured with precision. We find no evidence for continental crust, or other crust types, even after correcting for core formation. However, the silicate mantles of such exoplanets are discernible: one case is Earth like, but most are exotic in composition and mineralogy. Because these exoplanets exceed the compositional spread of >4,000 nearby main sequence stars, their unique silicate compositions are unlikely to reflect variations in parent star compositions. Instead, polluted white dwarfs reveal greater planetary variety in our solar neighborhood than currently appreciated, with consequently unique planetary accretion and differentiation paths that have no direct counterparts in our Solar System. Potassium elemental and isotope systematics were investigated for a suite of central European tektites from three strewn sub-fields in Czech Republic and possible parent sedimentary materials from the vicinity of the Ries impact structure in SE Germany, supplemented by data for several other impact-related materials (bediasites, Ivory Coast tektites, Libyan Desert Glass). Abstract Continental rifting, break-up, and onset of seafloor spreading are inherently controlled by the segmentation and structure of the continental domain suffering from extension. Today, the Zhongsha Atoll (ZS) is wedged between the Northwest Sub-basin (NWSB) and the Southwest Sub-basin (SWSB), two oceanic abyssal basins of the South China Sea (SCS). The nature of the crust and the structure of the transition from continental to oceanic domain are key to revealing the processes and dynamics during the rifting and break-up of the Zhongsha block. In this paper, we present a P-wave velocity model obtained from both forward modeling and tomographic inversion of wide-angle seismic line OBS2017-2. The results support the continental nature of the Zhongsha Block with a thickness of up to ~25 km. However, the transition from the thick continental domain of the ZS into both adjacent abyssal basins shows clear differences. To the north, a ~120 km wide domain of extended continental crust was observed. Farther north, the NWSB is characterized as a narrow basin with typical oceanic crust. The transitional domain between the continental and oceanic crust shows a ~30–40 km wide region with a high-velocity lower crust reflecting excessive magmatism. In contrast, the SWSB is characterized by a sharp transition from the thick continental crust of the ZS to thin oceanic crust which is probably underlain by serpentinized mantle. The strong rheological properties of the pre-rift crust in the western part of the SCS margin may be the reason that rifting concentrated on narrow rifts and thinning focused on necking domains, while the ZS avoided any intense extension. The configuration of rigid blocks thereafter affected the break-up position and the style of oceanic crust.

This paper reports new zircon U–Pb ages, whole-rock geochemistry, and Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf–O isotopic compositions for the Funiushan (FNS) pluton of the southern North China Craton (NCC). These data and statistical analyses of previously reported compositions of late Mesozoic granites from the southern NCC are used to constrain late Mesozoic continental recycling and geodynamic processes. The FNS pluton includes coexisting early Early Cretaceous (140 Ma), late Early Cretaceous (130–116 Ma) and highly evolved granites (HEGs; 126–125 Ma). The early Early Cretaceous granites have high Sr contents (332–566 ppm), high Sr/Y (53–138) and (La/Yb)N (29–52) ratios, and low MgO contents (0.15–0.48 wt%). They have relatively low (87Sr/86Sr)i values (0.7051–0.7054), relatively high eNd(t) values (−4.11 to −3.96) and variable eHf(t) values (−22.9 to −0.53). They are also characterized by high initial 206Pb/204Pb values (17.893–17.975) and relatively low δ18O values (5.34‰–7.48‰) as well as Neoproterozoic (851–734 Ma) inherited zircons, suggesting that they have an adakitic affinity formed by recycling of subducted continental crust of the Yangtze Craton (YC) with input from a mantle component. In contrast, the late Early Cretaceous granites have relatively high (87Sr/86Sr)i values (0.7077–0.7085), low eNd(t) values (−14.2 to −12.0), relatively high initial 206Pb/204Pb values (17.398–17.497), eHf(t) values of −23.7 to −10.7, and δ18O values of 5.76‰–6.55‰. These data, and the Neoproterozoic zircon ages (716–702 Ma), indicate that the primary magmas formed from recycled YC crust with a minor contribution from the NCC basement. The late Early Cretaceous HEGs have relatively high eNd(t) values (−9.33 to −8.70), high initial 206Pb/204Pb values (17.656–17.885), intermediate eHf(t) values (−12.3 to −6.18), and relatively low δ18O values (5.22‰–6.72‰), indicating that they formed from subducted YC and mantle material. Previous work on granites of the southern NCC has established two phases of granite formation. Late Jurassic to early Early Cretaceous I-type granites (160–130 Ma) occur throughout the southern NCC. These are adakitic and formed from thickened lower continental crust (LCC). Late Early Cretaceous A-type granites (130–110 Ma) formed from thinned LCC. The differences between Late Jurassic to early Early Cretaceous granites and late Early Cretaceous granites reflect a transformation in tectonic regime from thickening to thinning, which is attributed to rollback of the subducting Paleo-Pacific Plate.

A three-dimensional tomographic image of the seismic velocity structure in the crust and upper mantle of northwestern Nicaragua was performed using the back-projection technique. The study is based on ~ 15,000 earthquakes located between 1975 and 1982 by the network installed by the USGS and the Institute of Seismic Research of Nicaragua. This data represents the longest continuous recording of seismicity by a homogeneous seismic network in Nicaragua. Data from this network has not been used before. Initially, a one-dimensional model of the seismic velocity structure (1-D) was determined in order to relocate the seismicity and to obtain a first estimate of the seismic velocity model of the continental crust. This 1-D crustal model was complemented with the upper mantle structure of the IASPEI91 Earth model. This initial 1-D model is used to iterate for a 3-D tomographic imaging of Nicaragua. The results show three distinct features. There is clear evidence of a low seismic velocity plume rising from the subducted slab at depths of between 60 and 120 km. This low-velocity zone may be interpreted as the high temperature melts originating in the slab and feeding the volcanic arc. In northern Nicaragua, a high-velocity region is identified beneath the coast that presumably reflects the thickness of the subducting oceanic plate, estimated to be approximately 50 to 60 km thick. Beneath the volcanic arc, there is a low seismic velocity zone extending from 10 to 20 km. This low-velocity zone is interpreted as high-temperature material in the crust feeding the magma chambers of the volcanic arc.

There is increasing evidence indicating that melts derived from subducted oceanic crust and sediments may have played a key role in building continental crust. This mechanism predicts that juvenile arc crust should have oxygen isotope characteristics ranging from mantle-like to supracrustal, but consistent mantle-like radiogenic (Nd-Hf) isotopic signatures. Here we present in-situ zircon U-Pb dating, Hf-O isotope analyses, and whole rock major-trace element and Nd isotope analyses of a granitoid from NW India. In-situ secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) zircon U-Pb dating yields a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 873±6 Ma for the granitoid. It displays mantle-like zircon eHf(eHf(873 Ma)=+9.3 to +10.9) and whole-rock Nd (eNd(873 Ma)=+3.5) values but supracrustal δ18O values, the latter mostly varying between 9‰ and 10‰. The calculated whole-rock δ18O value of 11.3‰±0.6‰ matches well with those of hydrothermally-altered pillow lavas and sheeted dykes from ophiolites. The major and trace element composition of the granitoid is similar to petrological experimental melts derived from a mixture of MORB+sediments. Thus, the granitoid most likely represents the product of partial melting of the uppermost oceanic crust (MORB+sediments). We propose that the decoupling between Hf-Nd and O isotopes as observed in this granitoid can be used as a powerful tool for the identification of slab melting contributing to juvenile continental crustal growth. Such isotopic decoupling can also account for high δ18O values observed in ancient juvenile continental crust, such as Archean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite suites.

The isotopic composition of the detrital sediment record harbours a valuable proxy for estimating the composition of the erodible upper crust since the Archaean. Refractory elements such as titanium (Ti) and zirconium (Zr) can display systematic variations in their isotopic composition as a result of magmatic differentiation. Hence, the isotopic composition of such elements in detrital sediments could potentially be used to infer the average composition (e.g., SiO2 content) of their source region, even when elemental systematics are obfuscated by weathering and diagenetic processes. A key premise of this approach is that the isotopic composition of sediments remains unbiased relative to their protolith. To what extent isotopic fractionation can occur during sedimentary processes, notably the hydrodynamic sorting of heavy mineral assemblages with contrasting isotopic compositions, remains poorly understood. We investigate the effects of such processes on the Ti and Zr isotope composition of a suite of detrital sediments from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS). These sediments are binary mixtures of two main provenance components, Saharan dust and Nile sediment, with strongly contrasting mineralogical and geochemical signatures. The EMS sediments display clear evidence for hydrodynamic sorting of zircon, expressed as a large variation in Zr/Al2O3 and deviation of εHf relative to the terrestrial εNd-εHf array. Our new data, however, do not show pronounced Zr isotope variation resulting from either hydrodynamic sorting of zircon or sediment provenance. Although this agrees with theoretical models that predict negligible equilibrium zircon-melt Zr isotope fractionation, it contrasts with recent observations suggesting that kinetic Zr isotope fractionation might be a common feature in igneous rocks. For the EMS sediments, the negligible shift in Zr isotope composition through hydrodynamic sorting means that fine-grained samples accurately reflect the composition of their source. The nearly overlapping Zr isotope compositions of Sahara- and Nile-derived sediment, however, mean that Zr isotopes, in this case, have insufficient resolution to be a useful provenance proxy. Titanium behaves differently. A small but resolvable, systematic difference in Ti isotope composition is observed between the Sahara and Nile provenance components. Samples with a strong Saharan dust signature show some Ti isotope evidence for hydrodynamic sorting of oxides in tandem with zircon, but a much stronger effect is inferred for Nile sediment. Regression of the EMS sediment samples shows that the Ti isotope composition of the Nile-derived component is strongly fractionated compared to its protolith, the Ethiopian flood basalts. Whereas Ti in Nile sediment is carried in essentially unmodified concentration, and by inference isotope composition, from its sources to the delta, large-scale hydrodynamic sorting of Fe-Ti oxides occurs in the littoral cell. This process causes a decrease in TiO2/Al2O3 of the residual fine-grained sediment fraction and shifts its Ti isotope composition to heavier compositions. The potential of such an “oxide effect” in detrital sediments has implications for crustal evolution models that use Ti isotopes as a proxy for the proportion of felsic crust and can account for the observed scatter in the shale record.

Tremendous granites were produced during the late-stage evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt and important to understanding the tectonic processes from subduction to collision. Here, we present zircon U-Pb-Hf, and whole-rock geochemical, and Sr-Nd isotopic data for a suite of Carboniferous-Permian granites from the Khan-Bogd area of the southern Mongolia. U-Pb age dating of zircons indicates that the alkaline feldspar granites and quartz monzonite-monzodiorites on the southwest of the Khan-Bogd town were formed at ~315–310 Ma and the alkaline feldspar granites on its south at ~290 Ma. The ~315–310 Ma alkaline feldspar granites possibly result from crustal anatexis of the Devonian-Carboniferous juvenile arc crust there, evidenced by their intensive continental geochemical signals and roughly similar Nd and Hf isotopes to these arc crust. The coeval quartz monzonite-monzodiorites with limited outcrop show arc affinity. Thus, these Late Carboniferous granites indicate a sharp decrease of mantle-crust interaction from earlier arc accretion. Combined with previous work, this change was possibly triggered by a low-angle subduction. The ~290 Ma alkaline feldspar granites show A-type petrological and geochemical features. In addition, they have more variable Nb/Ta (~10–18), Nd and Hf isotopes indicative of various continental crust involvement in their magma source. The lack of adakite and arc-type magma deprives the possibility of lithospheric delamination, ridge subduction and slab rollback. As a significant mantle input evidenced by coeval bimodal magmatism, this crust-derived granite was likely induced by a slab breakoff (~305–290 Ma), rather than backarc extension. Combined with previous work, this slab breakoff probably indicates a tectonic transition of post collision (~315–290 Ma) from subduction-accretion and marks the closure of a wide secondary ocean (North Tianshan-Hegenshan ocean) of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. Moreover, it plays an important role for the vertical crustal growth of the CAOB.

Recent analytical advances have provided means to measure potassium (K) isotopes in various terrestrial materials, but little is known about K distribution and stable isotope composition in the lithospheric mantle because of: (a) common low K abundances, (b) potential contamination and alteration, (c) diversity of mantle rocks and minerals hosting K in different tectonic settings. We report K abundances and δ(41)K values for well-studied whole-rock (WR) mantle xenoliths (spinel and garnet peridotites and pyroxenites) from mobile belts, a craton, a subduction zone, as well as for K-rich phases (mica, amphibole, silicate glass) and xenolith-bearing volcanic materials (67 samples). The xenolith materials show extremely broad ranges of K content (7 μg/g to 6.6 wt.%) and δ(41)K (−2.77‰ to 0.62‰). They contrast with the narrow δ(41)K range for host volcanic materials (−0.53‰ to −0.27‰) and literature data on oceanic basalts (melting products of upwelling asthenosphere: −0.43 ± 0.17‰, 2sd). Amphibole-bearing subduction zone peridotites show the highest WR δ(41)K values (0.40 to 0.62‰) likely inherited from fluids released into the mantle wedge from subducted oceanic crust. All other WR samples yield negative δ(41)K: −0.06‰ to −2.77‰ for peridotites and −0.17‰ to −0.52‰ for pyroxenites. The δ(41)K in K-rich mantle phases range from positive values (0.16 to 0.57‰) for phlogopite in strongly metasomatized peridotites to negative values (−0.27 to −0.94‰) for phlogopite, amphibole and glass pockets from other samples, which cannot be explained by equilibrium inter-mineral fractionation inferred from ab initio calculations. We attribute the broad δ(41)K variations to (a) isotope fractionation during fluid-rock interaction in the mantle, and (b) distinct sources of K-bearing fluids. Kinetic isotope fractionation during fluid percolation and diffusion is inferred for composite xenoliths (phlogopite and pyroxenite veins in peridotites) that have lower δ(41)K in the hosts than in the veins due to slower migration of (41)K than (39)K from the veins (former fluid channels) to host mantle. Overall, the K isotope fractionation in the lithospheric mantle appears to be greater than for magmatic fractionation in the crust. The average δ(41)K of normal off-craton continental lithospheric mantle calculated from the least altered fertile and lightly metasomatized lherzolites is −0.57 ± 0.28‰ (2sd). This value is within error (though a little lower) of estimates for both continental crust and MORB and OIB mantle sources indicating that these major silicate Earth reservoirs have similar bulk δ(41)K values, apparently due to low or negligible K isotopic fractionation during their formation by magmatic differentiation and melting. By contrast, K isotopes in modern and fossil subduction zones are fractionated via fluid-related equilibrium and kinetic processes.
