The physical and geochemical characteristics of shallow ice cores drilled in the accumulation area (Western Cwm) of Khumbu Glacier in the Nepal Himalayas in 1980 were analyzed. The two ice cores from different elevations (cores 1 and 2 from 6,100 and 6,400 m a.s.l., respectively) showed distinct stratigraphy: Core 1 consisted of stratified firn layers with a few ice and dust layers, whereas core 2 consisted of unstratified refrozen ice with abundant debris. The mean oxygen-stable isotope was significantly lower in core 2 than in core 1, and the composition of major soluble ions also differed between the ice cores. The mineralogical characteristics of debris in core 2 were in accordance with the geology of the south face of Mt. Everest, indicating that it was supplied from above 7,000 m a.s.l. by avalanches. The distinct stratigraphy and geochemistry suggest that the snow accumulation process differed between the two drilling sites; snow was supplied by precipitation in core 1, whereas in core 2 it was supplied by avalanche with rock debris from the higher site of the south face of Mt. Everest. The two distinct snow accumulation processes are likely to characterize the mass balance and formation of debris covers of the lower ablation area of Khumbu Glacier.

Previous reconstructions of summer temperatures from ice cores have relied on a statistical relationship between a melt layer and temperature observed at nearby stations. This study presents a novel method for reconstructing summer temperatures from melt layers in ice cores using an energy balance model that incorporates heat conduction and meltwater refreezing in the firn. We use the seasonal patterns in the ERA‐Interim reanalysis data set for an ice core site to calculate the amounts of refreezing water within the firn under various summer mean temperature (SMT) and annual precipitation conditions, and prepared calibration tables containing these three variables. We then estimate the SMTs from the refreezing amount and annual accumulation, both of which can be obtained from an ice core. We apply this method to four ice cores that were recovered from sites with different climates: two sites on the Greenland Ice Sheet, one in Alaska, and one in Russian Altai. The reconstructed SMTs show comparable variations with those of observed temperatures at nearby stations. The nonlinear relationship between SMT and melt layer thickness differs between sites, indicating that a single linear approximation cannot be employed to estimate SMT. Sensitivity analyses suggest that the annual temperature range, amount of annual precipitation, and firn albedo (which is a time‐invariant value in the model) significantly affect the relationship between SMT and melt layer thickness. This new method provides an alternative to existing approaches and yields an independent estimate of SMT from ice cores that have been affected by melting.

Pollen grains are commonly found in ice cores, particularly those from mountain glaciers at low to middle latitudes. Because the release of pollen from flowers has a seasonality and varies among the plant species, pollen concentrations in ice cores are useful for distinguishing annual or seasonal layers and inferring past vegetation near glaciers. We analyzed major pollen grains in an 87-m-deep ice core drilled at the top of the Grigoriev Ice Cap (4563 m.a.s.l.) in the Tien Shan Mountains, Kyrgyz Republic. Microscopy showed that mainly five pollen taxa were contained in the ice core. Their abundance fluctuated with the depth of the core, indicating their seasonal deposition on the ice cap, while the seasonality of the stable isotopes was not particularly clear because of melting and refreezing signatures. Based on the pollen profiles, annual layers were determined back in time to 1780 AD at a depth of 63.6 m; at greater depth, they could not be distinguished due to ice layer thinning in the glacier. The pollen assemblages have gradually changed during the last 220 years and were particularly distinctive in the deeper part, suggesting the drastic change of vegetation in this region during the Holocene.

To understand the geological origins of minerals in cryoconite and the nutrients sources for microbes on glaciers, we analyzed the Sr–Nd isotopic ratios of the four mineral fractions in cryoconites including saline, carbonate, phosphate, silicate and the organic fraction obtained from Gulkana Glacier in Alaska. The isotopes in the silicate mineral fraction exhibited spatial variation within the glacier (87Sr/86Sr: 0.704533–0.709563, εNd (0): −16.0 to 0.5), which can be explained by the different mixing ratios of the two distinct sources: one of the sources is lateral and terminal moraines or soil, and the other is the medial moraine of the glacier. The minerals in the cryoconite at the lower sites in the glacier are likely derived from the former source, whereas those at the upper sites are from latter sources. The mineralogical and elemental compositions also support mixing of the silicate minerals from the two local sources. The Sr isotopic ratios of the organic fraction also showed spatial variation on the glacier in the middle sites – a trend similar to those of the phosphate fraction. The results suggest that the organic matter is mostly the byproducts of microbes using the phosphate minerals as a nutrient source.

Cryoconite holes are water-filled cylindrical holes formed on ablation ice surfaces and commonly observed on glaciers worldwide. Temporal changes of cryoconite holes characteristically −2, 40–55% of the incoming flux). In contrast, holes developed in sunny conditions correspond to high solar radiation (186–278 W m−2, 63–88%). Results suggest that the dimensions of holes drastically changed depending on the weather conditions and that frequent cloudy, warm and windy conditions would cause a decay of holes and weathering crust, inducing an increase in the cryoconite coverage on the ice, consequently darkening the glacier surface.

Intensive groundwater development in the urban area of the Nagaoka Plain, Japan, has induced changes in the pH and saturation index of calcite in groundwater. To account for these chemical changes, it is important to determine seasonal variations of recharge and the groundwater flow system in the aquifer. This study identified the sources and flow system of groundwater in this urban area by a comprehensive method using stable isotope data and a numerical groundwater model of the Nagaoka Plain. Stable isotope evidence shows that the groundwater is recharged by meteoric water originating from low-elevation areas rather than the mountains surrounding the plain. The water table in the study area is drawn down during the winter and recovers in the other seasons. Numerical modeling shows that discharge occurs primarily along the Shinano River during the recovery period, whereas discharge is centered in urbanized areas during the drawdown period, when a conical depression of the water table stimulates recharge from the immediate area. These results are indications of a local groundwater flow system, with its recharge area between the Shinano River and the urban areas, which is governed by intensive seasonal groundwater extraction.

Investigation of fluid distribution along megathrust faults is an important issue, since the fluid affects frictional properties and thus slip behavior on faults. Scattered teleseismic phases, or receiver functions (RFs), have made significant contributions to understanding the fluid content of subducting plates beneath the onshore regions, but have been rarely applied in offshore settings. In this study, we conducted receiver function inversion analysis to investigate detailed seismic properties near the megathrust fault using ocean-bottom seismometers deployed off the Kii Peninsula, southwest Japan. RFs were calculated at high-frequencies (up to 4 Hz), removing the effect of water reverberations from vertical component records. Our inversion was performed in two steps: first we modeled sediment layer by a simple stacking method, and then solved for deeper structure by a waveform inversion. The results indicate the presence of a thin low-velocity zone (LVZ) of a thickness of 0.2-1.2 km with a S-wave velocity of 0.7-2.4 km/s along the plate interface. We interpret this LVZ as thin fluid-rich sediment layer between the overriding and subducting plates that acts as a pathway of fluid migration.

Daily samples of aerosol (n=27) were collected from September 21st to October 4th, 2013 in Fukang (44.17°N, 88.45°E, 475 m a.s.l.), Xinjiang, Northwest China. The enrichment factors (EFc) of selected 49 elements showed that the aerosols had extremely high concentrations of heavy metals, probably indicating their anthropogenic origins. Morphology of individual aerosol particles was determined by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Based on morphology and elemental composition, the particles were clustered into three dominant types: (I) crustal originated particles: Si/Al-rich particles (36%) and Si/Fe-rich particles (24%); (II) mixed source particles; and (III) pollution derived particles: Pb-rich particles (10%). The backward trajectories were calculated using the HYSPLIT model, and the results indicated the different anthropogenic sources for heavy metals in Fukang aerosols. Air mass from north was identified as the most polluted source when compared to south and west.

This study presents a 64-year (1951–2014) reconstruction of the surface mass balance of Glacier No. 31, located in the Suntar-Khayata Range of the eastern Siberia, where the ablation zone is characterized by the extensive dark ice surface. We use a temperature index-based glacier mass-balance model, which computes all major components of glacier mass budget and is forced by daily air temperature and precipitation from a nearby meteorological station. The glacier shows a mean annual mass balance of–0.35 m w.e.a–1 during the past 64 years, with an acceleration of–0.50 m w.e. a–1 during the recent years. A cumulative mass loss of the glacier is ~22.3 m w.e. over the study period, about 56% of which is observed during 1991–2014. In addition to the contribution of temperature rise and precipitation decrease to recent mass loss of the glacier, an experimental analysis, in which the clean and dark ice surfaces are respectively assumed to cover the entire ablation zone, indicates that dark ice surface, caused by insoluble impurities consisting of mineral dusts, cryoconite granules, and ice algae, plays a crucial role in the changing mass balance through enhancing melt rates in the ablation zone of the glacier.

We examine a firn core from a dome in southeast Greenland that exhibits distinct firn densification. The ice was -20.9 °C at 20 m depth, and the core gives an average accumulation rate of 1.0 m w.e. yr-1 in water equivalent. However, the close-off density of 830 kg m-3 occurs at 83.4–86.8 m depth, which is about 20-m shallower than that obtained from two empirical models. Where the density ρ > 750 kg m-3, the densification appears faster than that from the empirical models. As a result, compared to the empirical coefficient, the actual compactive viscosity coefficient is nonlinear and decreases at ρ > 750 kg m-3, indicating that the firn with a higher density is softer than that from the empirical result. We argue here that the high accumulation rate creates a high overburden pressure in a short time. Previous studies reconstructing summer temperature from an ice core relied on statistical relationship between melt feature and instrumental temperature observed at a nearby station. This study demonstrates a novel method to reconstruct summer temperature from ice layer thickness in an ice core using an energy balance model, in which heat conduction and refreezing of meltwater in firn are taken into account. Geoneutrino observations, first achieved by KamLAND in 2005 and followed by Borexino in 2010, have accumulated statistics and improved sensitivity for more than ten years. The uncertainty of the geoneutrino flux at the surface is now reduced to a level small enough to set useful constraints on U and Th abundances in the bulk silicate earth (BSE). However, in order to make inferences on earth's compositional model, the contributions from the local crust need to be understood within a similar uncertainty. Here we develop a new method to construct a stochastic crustal composition model utilizing Bayesian inference. While the methodology has general applicability, it incorporates all the local uniqueness in its probabilistic framework. Unlike common approaches for this type of problem, our method does not depend on crustal segmentation into upper, (middle) and lower, whose classification and boundaries are not always well defined. We also develop a new modeling method to infer rock composition distributions that conserve mass balance and therefore do not bias the results. Combined with a new vast collection of geochemical data for rock samples in the Japan arc, we apply this method to geoneutrino observation at Kamioka, Japan. Currently a difficulty remains in the handling of correlations in the flux integration; we conservatively assume maximum correlation, which leads to large flux estimation errors of 60~70%. Despite the large errors, this is the first local crustal model for geoneutrino flux prediction with probabilistic error estimation in a reproducible way., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, with 9 figures in Appendix

The Earth's upper inner core has a quasi-hemispherical velocity structure. One of the two quasi-hemispheres has a high-velocity region centered beneath Southeast Asia and is referred to as “East”. The remaining low-velocity region is referred to as “West”. The boundary positions between the quasi-hemispheres are rather scattered but well estimated at low- and mid-latitudes, whereas discrepancies between seismological hemisphere models increase at high latitudes. However, the boundary position at high latitudes is important when considering the origin of the quasi hemisphericity. Recent deployment of a temporary broadband seismic array in Thailand (Thai Seismic Array; TSAR) provides a means to analyze the inner core structure in the north polar region because rays from Central American earthquakes to the network are transmitted through the inner core and have their turning points approximately 150–400 km beneath the north polar region of the inner core boundary. We measured the differential traveltimes of earthquake waveforms between a seismic phase transmitted through the inner core (PKIKP, DF) and a phase that turns in the lower outer core (PKPbc, BC). The observed differential times are approximately 0.2–0.3 s smaller than theoretical estimates predicted by the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM) over the observed distance range and 0.3–0.5 s smaller than those of AK135 at larger distances, which suggests lower velocities in the analyzed region of the upper inner core. Our analyses show that models with velocities ~0.03 km/s lower than those of PREM in the upper 300 km of the inner core, with a velocity about midway between PREM and AK135 in the F layer, sufficiently fit the observed differential times. This low-velocity feature in the upper inner core is characteristic of the “West”. The observations are also largely explained by the model obtained for the structure beneath the northeast Pacific in mid-latitudes classified as “West”. Our previous study also shows that the south polar region of the upper inner core has “West” characteristics. Our results thus suggest that the north and south polar regions of the upper inner core have a “West” structure and that the Earth's upper inner core has an eyeball-shaped high-velocity anomaly called the “East”. The shape of the hemispheric boundary is possibly an ellipse shortened in the north-south direction rather than a circle.

High frequency energy radiation of large earthquakes is a key to evaluating shaking damage and is an important source characteristic for understanding rupture dynamics. We developed a new inversion method, Image Deconvolution Back-Projection (IDBP) to retrieve high frequency energy radiation of seismic sources by linear inversion of observed images from a back-projection approach. The observed back-projection image for multiple sources is considered as a convolution of the image of the true radiated energy and the array response for a point source. The array response that spreads energy both in space and time is evaluated by using data of a smaller reference earthquake that can be assumed to be a point source. The synthetic test of the method shows that the spatial and temporal resolution of the source is much better than that for the conventional back-projection method. We applied this new method to the 2001 M w 7.8 Kunlun earthquake using data recorded by Hi-net in Japan. The new method resolves a sharp image of the high frequency energy radiation with a significant portion of supershear rupture.

doi: 10.7185/geochemlet.1611 Darkening of glacier and ice sheet surfaces is an important positive feedback to increasing global temperatures. Deposition of impurities on glaciers is primarily believed to reduce surface albedo, resulting in greater melt and mass loss. However, no study has yet included the effects of biological activity in albedo reduction models. Here, we provide the first experimental evidence that microbial activity can significantly decrease glacier surface albedo. Indeed, the addition of nutrients at ice meltwater concentrations to microbe-impurity mixtures resulted in extensive microbial organic carbon fixation and accumulation in Green land Ice Sheet surface debris. Accumulated organic carbon, over the period of a melt season, darkened the glacial debris in our experiments from 31.1 % to 15.6 % surface reflectivity (used as an analogue for albedo in our calculations), generating a strongly absorbing surface. Our experiments are the first to quantify the microbially-induced potential melt increase for the Greenland Ice Sheet (up to an average of 17.3 ± 2.5 Gt yr-1 at present and up to ~85 Gt yr-1 by 2100, based on our first order calculations). Mass loss from glaciers will conceivably intensify through enhanced microbial activity, resulting from longer melt seasons and fertilisation from anthropogenic sources.

The hemispherical nature of heterogeneities of the isotropic velocity and attenuation of the inner core has been extensively studied by seismic observations, but consensus on the character of the boundary between two hemispheres has not yet been achieved. To investigate the hemispherical boundary in detail, we analyze core phase data whose ray paths propagate beneath the northern Pacific. We employ a waveform inversion approach based on simulated annealing to measure the differential traveltime and the attenuation parameter of the core phases. Measured differential traveltimes for data from European stations for events in the Fiji-Tonga region show positive anomalies consistent with the eastern hemisphere model, while those from USArray for events in Indonesia show relatively small values. Ray-theory based forward modeling of the differential traveltimes is conducted by varying the shape and the transition width of the boundary. An arc-like shape boundary that connects points (0°N, 159°W) on the equator and (79°N, 110°E) in far north with a transition width of ∼600 km best explains the observed differential traveltimes rather than a sharp boundary. This model also accounts for the observed variation of attenuation parameters.

The 3D lithological distribution model presented in this data article is related to “Stochastic modeling of 3-D compositional distribution in the crust with Bayesian inference and application to geoneutrino observation in Japan” by Takeuchi et al. (2019) [1]. Our target region is set to the crust and uppermost mantle beneath Japanese main islands and their vicinity. We discretized the target region into 79,968 grid points. We defined 31 rock types; 29 major crustal rock types, plus sediment and mantle. Our lithology model represents a probabilistic distribution map inferred from a seismic tomography model and allows quantitative studies with error estimations, making it fundamentally different from previous models. To enable such quantitative applications, we provide explicit numerical data for the probabilities of the 31 rock types for each grid point. We also provide explicit values of the bulk proportion lithology model at various depths and for the bulk whole crust. Glacial meltwater samples were collected from 15 supraglacial ponds at elevations ranging between 3989 and 4292 m above sea level in the debris-covered area of Lirung glacier in central Nepal Himalayas, from November 2010 to October 2011 on a bimonthly basis. We examined elevation trends, and their control by seasonality, dominant geochemical processes, and seasonal dynamics in these supraglacial ponds. Concentration of some parameters showed a decreasing trend with elevation but with high variability and modulation by seasons, being more prevalent in the post-monsoon. Sulfate is the only parameter showing significant elevation trends regardless of the season, although the trend is also affected by the monsoon. The concentrations of major chemical solutes were highest during post-monsoon season and lower in the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons, indicating influence of seasonality on dissolution, dilution, and hydrological processes. Contribution to chemical loads from marine aerosols to these pond water appeared to be minor except for sodium and magnesium. Chemical weathering of carbonate and silicate minerals fueled by dissolution of pyrite appeared as the dominant geochemical processes.

We apply a nonlinear waveform inversion method that we developed previously ( Iritani et al., 2010 , Iritani et al., 2014 ) to broadband ( 0.02 – 2 Hz ) core phase data recorded by global seismic arrays in order to investigate the frequency dependence of inner core attenuation. The results show a prominent difference of the frequency dependence of attenuation between the eastern hemisphere and the western hemisphere: while attenuation is frequency dependent in the western hemisphere, not so in the eastern hemisphere. Moreover, in the western hemisphere, a stronger frequency dependence of the attenuation is observed beneath Africa compared to beneath North America. This intricate quasi-hemispherical property of the frequency dependence of the inner core attenuation, together with the quasi-hemispherical variability of seismic velocity and attenuation strength at around 1 Hz that we reported earlier, can be consistently understood in terms of the relative location of the seismic observation frequency band and the absorption band peaks that are different for regions. The variability of the absorption band peak may reflect the variability of the iron grain size of the inner core: the grain size is larger in the eastern hemisphere than the western hemisphere, and in the western hemisphere beneath North America, it gradually increases with depth. However, caution should be taken in this inference as the physical mechanism of attenuation in the inner core is still poorly constrained both theoretically and observationally.

We conducted delay time tomography of the upper mantle beneath the northwestern Pacific using P data from NorthEast China Extended SeiSmic Array, F-net, and nearby available stations. To improve resolution and accuracy in the vicinity of mantle discontinuities, we extracted traveltimes of both initial and secondary phases observed at triplication distances by using a waveform fitting technique. Compared with the model obtained by using only the initial phase, the resolution just above the 410 km discontinuity is especially improved, and low-velocity anomalies beneath the Changbai Volcano are clearly observed down to the 410 km discontinuity. Compared with previous models, low-velocity anomalies atop the 410 are more pronounced. The results of this study together with the previous receiver function analysis provide further support that we have hot material beneath the Changbai Volcano.

Determining damping of our plates For plate tectonics to operate, a weaker layer called the asthenosphere must underlie the rigid lithospheric plates. Quantifying the difference in strength comes down to how much each layer attenuates energy. Takeuchi et al. exploited an ocean-bottom seismic network and seismic energy from the 2011 Japanese Tohoku-oki earthquake to quantify the attenuation in each layer (see the Perspective by Dalton). The attenuation of energy in the asthenosphere lined up with previous estimates, but the lithospheric attenuation was roughly one-fifth as strong as that predicted by some previous models. We apply a waveform inversion method based on simulated annealing to complex core phase data observed by globally deployed seismic arrays, and present regional variation of depth profiles of attenuation and velocity for the top half of the inner core. Whereas measured attenuation parameters exhibit consistent trends for data sampling the eastern hemisphere of the inner core, for the western hemisphere, there is a remarkable difference between data sampling the inner core beneath Africa (W1) and beneath north America (W2). Obtained attenuation profiles suggest that intricate heterogeneities appear to be confined in the top 300 km. The profile for the eastern hemisphere has a high attenuation zone in the top 150 km that gradually diminishes with depth. Conversely, for the western hemisphere, the profile for W1 shows constant low attenuation and that for W2 represents a gradual increase from the inner core boundary to a peak at around 200 km depth. Velocity profiles, obtained from differential traveltimes between PKP(DF) and PKP(CD, BC) phases, for the eastern and western hemispheres are respectively about 0.8% faster and 0.6% slower than the reference model at the top of the inner core, and the difference nearly disappears at about 200 km depth. Our result suggests the presence of intricate quasi-hemispherical structures in the top ∼200–300 km of the inner core.

The mineralogical composition of cryoconite on a glacial surface was investigated on six glaciers in northwest Greenland (Qaanaaq Qaqortaq Tugto Bowdoin Sun and Scarlet Heart. The X‑ray diffraction analysis showed that the cryoconites mainly contained seven silicate minerals: hornblende quartz potassium feldspar plagioclase illite kaolinite and chlorite. Semi‑quantitative mineralogical analysis of the silicate mineral composition on the Qaanaaq Glacier showed little variation among the samples collected from five different elevations. This indicates that the minerals on the glacier were probably dominated by dust from a unique source which is recently transported from local sediments including soil and moraine. On the other hand the mineral composition varied significantly among the glaciers. Based on the clay mineral content the glaciers could be classified into three groups. Type A: high clay mineral content composed of illite and kaolinite found on Qaanaaq Qaqortaq and Tugto; Type B: high clay mineral content composed of only kaolinite found on Sun; and Type C: lower clay mineral content composed of only kaolinite found on Bowdoin and Scarlet Heart. The geographical distribution of the types of glaciers did not correspond with the geology in this area indicating that the mineralogical composition is not determined just by the geologi‑ cal conditions around glaciers but also by other factors such as the redistribution of sediments by glacial fluvial or coastal processes.

Spatial variations in impurities (cryoconite) on the glacier surface were investigated on Qaanaaq Ice Cap and Tugto Glacier in the northwest Greenland in the melting season of 2012. Abundance of impurities ranged from 0.36 to 119 g m -2 (dry weight, mean: 18.8 g m -2 ) on bare ice and from 0.01 to 8.7 g m -2

In order to better understand the source of minerals on the dark-colored ice, located in the Greenland ice sheet ablation zone, we analyzed the Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of minerals in cryoconite, which were collected from glaciers in northwest and southwest Greenland. We focused on the following: (i) comparison of the isotopes of minerals in cyroconite with those in sediments from local and distant areas, (ii) regional variations in western Greenland, and (iii) spatial variations across an individual a glacier. The mineral components of the cryoconite showed variable Sr and Nd isotopic ratios (87Sr/86Sr: 0.711335 to 0.742406, εNd (0): −33.1 to −22.9), which corresponded to those of the englacial dust and moraine on and around the glaciers but were significantly different from those of the distant deserts that have been considered to be primary sources of mineral dust on the Greenland Ice Sheet. This suggests that the minerals within the cryoconites were mainly derived from local sediments, rather than from distant areas. The Sr ratios in the northwestern region were significantly higher than those in the southwestern region. This is probably due to geological differences in the source areas, such as the surrounding glaciers in each region. The isotopic ratios further varied spatially within a glacier (Qaanaaq and Kangerlussuaq areas), indicating that the silicate minerals on the glaciers were derived not from a single source but from multiple sources, such as englacial dust and wind-blown minerals from the moraine surrounding the glaciers.

[1] High-resolution tomography of the lower mantle has revealed the existence of another chemically distinct region with low-velocity and a sheet-like structure beneath the western Pacific. On the other hand, Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) sometimes have elongated shapes. If a sheet-like upwelling reaches the Earth’s surface while maintaining its shape, an elongated LIP may form. In order to test this hypothesis, we perform a series of experiments and investigate the stability of a buoyant sheet. The experimental results show that the buoyant fluid accumulates at the top of the sheet to form a buoyant cylinder. The gravitational instability divides the cylinder into several plume heads. We develop a model to explain the growth of the buoyant cylinder and the time scale until instability begins. Our model shows that a thin sheet-like upwelling with a width of 200 km, a small density difference from the ambient mantle, 10 kg m � 3 ,a nd a high supply rate of buoyant fluid, 0.1 m yr � 1 , can reach the Earth’s surface while maintaining its shape. We thus infer that LIPs with an elongated shape can be generated by sheet-like upwellings. The width of the observed sheet-like low-velocity region beneath the western Pacific is 500 km and is marginally sufficient to form an elongated LIP.

A multiple parameter dating technique was used to establish a depth/age scale for a 171.3 m (145.87 m w.e.) surface to bedrock ice core (Bl2003) recovered from the cold recrystallization accumulation zone of the Western Belukha Plateau (4115 m a.s.l.) in the Siberian Altai Mountains. The ice-core record presented visible layering of annual accumulation and of δ18O/δD stable isotopes, and a clear tritium reference horizon. A steady-state glacier flow model for layer thinning was calibrated and applied to establish a depth/age scale. Four radiocarbon (14C) measurements of particulate organic carbon contained in ice-core samples revealed dates for the bottom part of Bl2003 from 9075 ± 1221 cal a BC at 145.2 ± 0.1 m w.e. (0.665 m w.e. from the bedrock) to 790 ± 93 AD at 121.1 m w.e. depth. Sulfate peaks coincident with volcanic eruptions, the Tunguska meteorite event, and the 1842 dust storm were used to verify dating. Analysis of the Bl2003 ice core reveals that the modern Altai glaciers were formed during the Younger Dryas (YD) (~10 950 to ~7500 cal a BC), and that they survived the Holocene Climate Optimum (HCO) (~6500 to ~3600 cal a BC) and the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) (~640 to ~1100 AD). A decrease in air temperature at the beginning and an abrupt increase at the end of the YD were identified. Intensification of winds and dust loading related to Asian desert expansion also characterized the YD. During the YD major ion concentrations increased significantly, up to 50 times for Na+ (background), up to 45 times for Ca2+ and Mg2+, and up to 20 times for SO42− relative to the recent warm period from 1993 to 2003. A warm period lasted for about three centuries following the YD signaling onset of the HCO. A significant and prolonged decrease in air temperature from ~2000 to ~600 cal a BC was associated with a severe centennial drought (SCD). A sharp increase in air temperatures after the SCD was coincident with the MWP. After the MWP a cooling was followed gradually with further onset of the Little Ice Age. During the modern warm period (1973–2003) an increase in air temperature is noted, which nearly reaches the average of HCO and MWP air temperature values.

Waveform tomography is conducted for SH velocity structures of the entire mantle using approximately 3.5 times the data used for obtaining the previous model, SH18CE. The resultant new model, SH18CEX, exhibits a cluster of ridge-like low-velocity anomalies in the western part of the Pacific Large Low-Shear-Velocity Province (LLSVP). The location of the ridge-like anomalies is in good agreement with the location of the abrupt change in the topography of the D″ discontinuity. These results suggest that the LLSVP is associated with a cluster of ridge-like-piles, rather than a single large pile spread over the entire region. The piles probably consist of intrinsically dense material; however, either their volume or density contrast may not be sufficiently large to develop large-scale domes.

Insoluble particle concentration in ice cores is commonly analyzed as a proxy for variations in atmospheric mineral dust (aerosol concentration). However, recent studies have revealed that the mineral dust is not only a constituent of the particles but that biogenic organic particles are also contained. We microscopically analyzed insoluble particles in a shallow ice core drilled on a mountain glacier, the Urumqi Glacier No. 1, in eastern Tienshan, China. We distinguished different morphological particles in the ice core and quantified them separately. Results showed that the insoluble particles in this ice core consisted mainly of mineral particles, amorphous organic particles, pollen, and microorganisms. Mineral particles were the most dominant, accounting for approximately 67% of total particles, and amorphous organic particles were the second most dominant, accounting for approximately 33% of the total. The annual variation in the particles for the last 11 years differed between mineral and amorphous organic particles. The results suggest that the total insoluble particle concentration in the ice core reflects not only the atmospheric mineral dust but also the organic particles blown from ground soil or produced by microbes on the glacial surface.

We conducted 2 yr (2005–2007) of in situ meteorological and glaciological observations on the Gregoriev Glacier, a flat-top glacier within the Inner Tien Shan, Kyrgyzstan. Relative carrier-phase GPS surveys reveal a vertical lowering at the summit of the glacier. Based on snow density data and an energy-mass balance model, we estimate that the annual precipitation and summer mean temperature required to maintain the glacier in the current state are 289 mm and −3.8 °C at the glacier summit (4600 m a.s.l.), respectively. The good agreement between dynamically derived precipitation and the long-term observed precipitation at a nearby station in the Tien Shan (296 mm at 3614 m a.s.l. for the period 1930–2002) suggests that the glacier has been in a near steady-state in terms of mass supply. The glacier mass-balance, reconstructed based on meteorological data from the Tien Shan station for the past 80 yr, explains the observed fluctuations in glacier extent, particularly the negative mass balance in the 1990s.

Heterogeneity sections potentially observed by neutrino radiography are simulated by using S-velocity tomography models. All of the velocity heterogeneities in these models are assumed to be of thermal origin, and the velocity anomalies are translated into density anomalies by using the scaling relations obtained from previous laboratory experiments. Assuming the use of the IceCube Neutrino Detector, the density anomalies were integrated along the paths to this detector. Five tomography models were tested, but the obtained sections show common features: paths sampling the CMB region beneath Africa and paths sampling the root of East Antarctica are anomalous. Previous studies suggested that these two regions may be chemically distinct. Approximate order estimations suggest that if these regions have 10% density anomalies, IceCube will detect them in about 300 years.

Cryoconite granules are dark-colored spherical aggregates of organic and inorganic material on glacier ice, and are commonly observed on glaciers the world over. The structure of cryoconite granules on Ürümqi glacier No. 1, Tien Shan, China, was analyzed. Granules were distributed over the entire ice surface of the ablation area, and ranged in size from 0.26 to 3.5 mm (mean 1.1 mm). The granule surface was densely covered with filamentous cyanobacteria. Microscopy of a thin section revealed various inner structures. Most granules had concentric layers of dense organic matter, which are probably derived from annual growth of the granules by the activity of cyanobacteria. The number of layers averaged 3.5 and ranged up to 7, which is likely to indicate their mean and maximum growth ages, respectively. Some granules contained two or more subgranules, showing that small granules had combined and enlarged. Such structures suggest that granule formation was mainly due to the activity of filamentous cyanobacteria, and that the granules repeatedly grew and disintegrated over a cycle of several years on the glacier.

Cyanobacterial communities on a glacier in the Qilian Shan, western China, were investigated using microscopic as well as 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer gene analyses. Microscopy revealed that there were abundant cyanobacteria on the entire glacier surface and their community consisted mainly of three morphological types. Low-cycle 16S rRNA gene sequences from six clone libraries were grouped into a total of eight cyanobacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs), defined as 16S rRNA sequences with similarity of 99%. Although the cyanobacterial community based on morphological types displayed no significant differences among the study sites on the glacier, the community based on OTU groups varied among sites. This inconsistency may be due to simple morphology which might hide a large genetic variability. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the OTU groups included the orders Oscillatoriales, Chroococcales and unclassified, and the majority of OTUs were Oscillatoriales. From the source environments of the cyanobacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences of each OTU on the glacier estimated by BLAST search (>97% similarity), 39.9% were from soil, 38.2% from fresh water and 1.7% from snow and ice environments. Based on geographical records in the database, all cyanobacterial OTUs were matched to those recorded from the Arctic and Antarctica. The results suggest that the cyanobacterial communities on the glacier are common in cold regions of the world and are likely not to be specialized members of the snow and ice biota but also inhabitants of soil and freshwater environments.

Stable-isotopic ratios of strontium (Sr), neodymium (Nd) and lead (Pb) provide a means of identifying a geological source of substances and are used as tracers of elements in biological and geochemical processes. We analyzed these isotopic ratios of surface dust (cryoconite) collected on Ürümqi glacier No. 1 , Tien Shan, China. The dust was separated chemically into five fractions (four minerals and organic matter), and the isotopic ratios of each fraction were measured. The Sr and Nd isotopic ratios in the fractions extracted with ultrapure water (saline minerals), hydrogen peroxide solution (organic matter) and acetic acid (carbonate minerals) were low and invariable, whereas those extracted by hydrochloric acid (phosphate minerals) and the residual fraction (silicate minerals) were higher. The difference was likely due to the original source of each fraction. The isotopic ratios of the surface dust collected from different sites showed no significant difference, suggesting that they were spatially uniform across the glacier. The isotopic ratios of the silicate fraction were closer to those of desert sand reported in China than those of the soil and bedrock around the glacier. This suggests that the silicate minerals on the glacier were derived from distant deserts. The isotopic ratios in saline, carbonate and phosphate fractions were also close to those of evaporites and apatite in that desert region, suggesting that these minerals were also derived from that source. The Sr isotopic ratios in the organic fraction were closer to ratios in the saline and carbonate fractions rather than the silicate or phosphate fractions and may therefore reflect the isotopic ratios of the elements when they are incorporated into living microbes on the glacier.

Field surveys of supraglacial ponds on debris-covered glaciers in the Nepal Himalaya clarify that ice-cliff calving occurs when the fetch exceeds ∼80 m. Thermal undercutting is important for calving processes in glacial lakes, and subaqueous ice melt rates during the melt and freeze seasons are therefore estimated under simple geomorphologic conditions. In particular, we focus on the differences between valley wind-driven water currents in various fetches during the melt season. Our results demonstrate that the subaqueous ice melt rate exceeds the ice-cliff melt rate when the fetch is >20 m and water temperature is 2–4°C. Calculations suggest the onset of calving due to thermal undercutting is controlled by water currents driven by winds at the surface of the lake, which develop with expanding water surface.

We developed a seismometer system for a hard landing “penetrator” probe in the course of the former Japanese LUNAR-A project to deploy new seismic stations on the Moon. The penetrator seismometer system (PSS) consists of two short-period sensor components, a two-axis gimbal mechanism for orientation, and measurement electronics. To carry out seismic observations on the Moon using the penetrator, the seismometer system has to function properly in a lunar environment after a hard landing (impact acceleration of about 8000 G), and requires a signal-to-noise ratio to detect lunar seismic events. We evaluated whether the PSS could satisfactorily observe seismic events on the Moon by investigating the frequency response, noise level, and response to ground motion of our instrument in a simulated lunar environment after a simulated impact test. Our results indicate that the newly developed seismometer system can function properly after impact and is sensitive enough to detect seismic events on the Moon. Using this PSS, new seismic data from the Moon can be obtained during future lunar missions.
