The Cenozoic tectonic framework of the Terra Nova Bay region is dominated by NW–SE-trending dextral strike–slip faults that represent the onshore expression of dextral transform shear along the Tasman Fracture Zone and Balleny Fracture Zone in the Southern Ocean. These intraplate faults reactivated inherited, Paleozoic crustal discontinuities established during the Ross Orogeny. Cenozoic, N–S to NNE–SSW transtensional faults developed in the crustal blocks in between the strike–slip faults as a kinematic consequence of the transcurrent motion. These transtensional faults provided a suitable mechanism to accomplish for dextral horizontal throw along the NW–SE strike–slip faults. The complex, strike–slip-induced kinematics controlled the location and the emplacement mechanisms of Cenozoic basic magma in the coastal sector of the Terra Nova Bay region. Sequential restoration of the present-day fault pattern in the Terra Nova Bay region, allowed reconstruction of the geologic framework of the area prior to onset of the strike–slip activity (from 105 Ma to 32 Ma), and also before the opening of the Ross Sea (earlier than 105 Ma). The pre-extensional framework was dominated by a vast, flay-lying plateau, mainly made up by the Jurassic Ferrar Supergroup rocks. Crustal thinning occurred due to movement on NNE–SSW- to NE–SW-trending extensional faults, and the inherited, through-going Paleozoic NW–SE regional-scale discontinuities were reactivated as transfer faults. Main extensional faults in the western side of the Ross Sea dip to the NE, and segmented this region into a series of blocks with minor tilting. Strike–slip tectonics characterises Late Cenozoic time, and is responsible for N–S extensional, rather symmetrical faulting along transfer zones in between major NW–SE transcurrent faults. Intersections between these two trends eased deep magma rise and the development of long-lasting, central volcanoes. The morphological effects of the last tectonic event were the development of NW–SE and N–S depressions and the rapid growth of volcanic edifices, that influenced both location and orientation of the main glaciers in northern Victoria Land and are responsible for their characteristic zig-zagging.

GNSS networks in Antarctica are a fundamental tool to define actual crustal displacements due to geological and geophysical processes and to constrain the glacial isostatic models (GIA). A large network devoted to the detection and monitoring of crustal deformations in the Northern Victoria Land (Victoria Land Network for DEFormation control – VLNDEF), was monumented during the 1999–2000 and 2000–2001 field campaigns, as part of Italian National Program for Antarctic Research and surveyed periodically during the Southern summer seasons. In this paper, GPS observations of VLNDEF collected over a more than 15-year span, together with various selected POLENET sites and more than 70 IGS stations, were processed with Bernese Software, using a classical double difference approach. A solution was obtained combining NEQs by means of ADDNEQ2/FODITS tools embedded in Bernese Software. All the Antarctic sites were kept free and a subset of 50 IGS stations were used to frame VLNDEF into ITRF2008. New evidence provided by analysis of GPS time series for the VLNDEF network is presented; also displacements along the vertical component are compared with the recently published GIA models. The absolute velocities indicate an overall displacement of the northern Victoria Land region along the south-east direction (Ve = 10.6 mm/yr, Vn = −11.5 mm/yr) and an average uplift rate of Vu = 0.5 mm/yr. Two GIA models have been analyzed: ICE-6G_C-VM5a proposed by Argus et al. (2014), Peltier et al. (2015) and W12A_v1 by Whitehouse et al. (2012a,b). Up rates, predicted over the VLNDEF sites by the mentioned GIA models, have been extracted and compared with those observed. A preliminary comparison with GPS-derived vertical rates shows that the Victoria Land ICE-6G_C-VM5 and W12A_v1 GIA models predict overestimated uplift rates of 0.7 and 0.9 mm/yr weighted mean residuals respectively. The mean horizontal relative motions within the Victoria Land (VL) area are in most cases negligible, while only a few points exhibit horizontal velocities greater than the confidence level. Such a residual horizontal velocity field could represent some of the tectonic characteristics affecting VL, characterized by block faulting, tilting along NE striking and SE dipping extensional faults. Uplift rates, highlighted in the present paper depict a well defined spatial pattern in the investigated areas. Northward, all sites show a general positive trend up to 2.3 mm/yr. In the central and southern areas small negative trends (up to −1.3 mm/yr) were detected in the vertical displacements. Only the site VL06, located atop the Mt. Melbourne volcano, does not concord with such a general reading, as it is representative of the volcanic complex’s evolution. Observed and predicted uplift rates increase westward (inland) where the ice-load increases. The same behavior is predicted southward by the GIA models; whereas GPS values decrease toward the south pole, due to the movements of a few sites reflecting the neotectonic phenomena acting in the Victoria Land region.

A better understanding of intraplate deformation requires the knowledge of the space–time scales involved in its development and to decipher possible links with the dynamic evolution of the plate boundaries. Central Iran provides an ideal test site to approach this scientific issue, since it is characterised by a prolonged history of Mesozoic–Cenozoic intraplate deformation that has been interfering with the spatio-temporal re-organization of the Zagros convergence zone along the Eurasia plate boundary. This study focus on the Doruneh Fault (DF) region that is considered as the northern mechanical boundary of the Central East Iranian Microcontinent. By combining field investigations with apatite low-temperature thermochronology, we present a revised tectono-stratigraphic scenario for the DF region, typified by a punctuated history of fault-related exhumation, burial and cooling history back to the Upper Cretaceous. When framed at regional scale, these results attest that the Zagros convergence zone, and its hinterland domain were fully mechanically coupled since ca. 40–35 Ma, a time lapse that is here referred as to the onset of continental collision along the Arabia–Eurasia plate boundary. In this scenario, the DF region operated throughout the Cenozoic as a major zone of residual stress accommodation and transfer in the hinterland domain of the Zagros convergence zone. Results of this study also suggest that the tectonic evolution along the Arabia–Eurasia plate boundary was modulated by the plate-boundary dynamics and by the modes of tectonic reactivation of the intracontinental weak zones of Central Iran and at its tectonic boundaries.

In this work we present the analysis of the footwall morphology of the Concordia subglacial extensional fault in the East Antarctic Craton. The Concordia Fault is a regional fault zone that extends for almost 200 km. The displacement, up to 1800 m, and the listric geometry were recognized by numerical modeling of the resulting hangingwall bedrock morphology and is responsible for the marked asymmetry that characterizes the corresponding scarp in the Concordia Subglacial Trench. The portion of the footwall in the proximity of the master fault exhibits an excavated morphology, about 500 m deep and up to 5 km wide, showing strong correlation with the master fault displacement. We excluded a predominant glacial and fluvial origin of this morphology considering: (i) the sharp topography of the Concordia Fault, suggesting that the fault activity started after the onset of the ice sheet; (ii) the ice-sheet/bedrock contact is characterized by a general negligible erosion/deposition rates still allowing clast removal; (iii) the lack of significant deposits in the Concordia Trench. We hence explored the possibility that this morphology may result from the combined action of fault-induced fracturing and passive clast removal and scattering by flow and plastic deformation within the ice sheet. We introduced the term tectonic carving for this process. Our modeling shows that tectonic carving relates to the relative fracture intensity in the Concordia fracture zone, that corresponds to the envelope of master and secondary fault damage zones. Fracture intensity depends on the frequency and the displacement of secondary faulting and can be approximated by a normal distribution. Using a Monte Carlo modeling approach we selected the set of parameters that best fits the data set with the carving theoretical curve. The final results of the Monte Carlo analysis show a root mean square of about 50 meters, comparable with the data resolution. This analysis demonstrates a method to unravel the presence of fracture zones in similar, weak erosional environments.

The Central-Southern Apennines are the result of the collision between Europe and Africa. Despite the volume of existing literature, many problems remain unsolved such as the presence of Tertiary conglomerates containing exotic basement clasts. The lack of basement rocks in the Central-Southern Apennines implies that the origin of these clasts has to be sought in areas where the basement is extensively exposed. These include the Calabro–Peloritani arc and the Sardinia–Corsica block, which in Cenozoic time were connected to the Central-Southern Apennines. In this work we present the results of sedimentary, geochemical and petrographic analyses performed on the exotic basement-derived clasts. These analyses include lithological, major- and minor-element and rare Earth element compositions which are compared to analogous rocks from Calabria and Sardinia basements. Results indicate Eastern Sardinia as the primary source area for the studied conglomeratic units, linking the Central-Southern Apennines sedimentary cover to the Mesozoic carbonates of Eastern Sardinia prior to the opening of Tyrrhenian Sea. The Cilento unit (Campania) was directly fed by an uplifting Cenozoic orogen, and the Filettino, Gavignano (Latium) and Ariano Irpino (Campania) units were produced by the successive reworking of ‘Cilento-like’ sedimentary units. These results may imply that part of the Central-Southern Apennines represented a portion of the European margin of the Tethys.

The surface of Ganymede is characterized by intense tectonic deformation. The two terrains, light and dark, show morphotectonic features, namely, grooves and furrows. These represent kilometric systems at the regional scale, interpreted as extensional structures (e.g., horst and graben systems). Currently, evidence of significant compression has not yet been recognized, leaving open the opportunity to clarify the tectonic balance of Ganymede's surface. Debate still exists on the geodynamics responsible for surface deformation, and the investigation of these features contributes to understanding the internal processes. To understand the deformation that shapes the surface of the satellite, we explore the tectonic setting of the light terrain region of Uruk Sulcus. Using structural geology methodologies by remote sensing and systematic analysis of grooves, we recognize three groove systems within the sulcus and one furrow system in the neighboring dark terrain. Uruk Sulcus is also characterized by the presence of two domains of lineaments, subtle linear texture anisotropies related to the influence of tectonic processes on morphology. Comparison of the combined results from the analyses of the recognized groove systems with the lineament domains allowed us to infer the stress field responsible for their development in the studied area. According to these results, an evolutionary tectonic scenario for Uruk Sulcus is proposed: a tectonic corridor characterized by dextral transpression, with 58% of the internal compressional component approximately N-S oriented and responsible for localized, E-W extensional features among crustal blocks of the shear zone.

In order to make inferences on the geodynamics of Antarctica, geodetic and gravimetric maps derived from past and new observations can be used. This paper provides new insights into the geodynamics of Antarctica by integrating data at regional and continental scales. In particular, signatures of geodynamic activity at a regional extent have been investigated in Victoria Land (VL, Antarctica) by means of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) permanent station observations, data from the VLNDEF (Victoria Land Network for Deformation control) discontinuous network, and gravity station measurements. At the continental scale, episodic GNSS observations on VLNDEF sites collected for 20 years, together with continuous data from the International GNSS Service (IGS) and Polar Earth Observing Network (POLENET) sites, were processed, and the Euler pole position assessed with the angular velocity of the Antarctic plate. Both the Bouguer and the free-air gravity anomaly maps were obtained by integrating the available open-access geophysics dataset, and a compilation of 180 gravity measurements collected in the VL within the Italian National Program for Antarctic Research (PNRA) activities. As a result, new evidence has been detected at regional and continental scale. The main absolute motion of VL is towards SE (Ve 9.9 &plusmn, 0.26 mm/yr, Vn &minus, 11.9 &plusmn, 0.27 mm/yr) with a pattern similar to the transforms of the Tasman and Balleny fracture zones produced as consequence of Southern Ocean spreading. Residual velocities of the GNSS stations located in VL confirm the active role of the two main tectonic lineaments of the region, the Rennick&ndash, Aviator and the Lillie&ndash, Tucker faults with right-lateral sense of shear. The resulting VL gravity anomalies show a NW region characterized by small sized Bouguer anomaly with high uplift rates associated and a SE region with low values of Bouguer anomaly and general subsidence phenomena. The East and West Antarctica are characterized by a different thickness of the Earth&rsquo, s crust, and the relative velocities obtained by the observed GNSS data confirm that movements between the two regions are negligible. In East Antarctica, the roots of the main subglacial highlands, Gamburtsev Mts and Dronning Maud Land, are present. The Northern Victoria Land (NVL) is characterized by more scattered anomalies. These confirm the differences between the Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) modeled and observed uplift rates that could be related to deep-seated, regional scale structures.

A recent focus of major international exploration in East Antarctica has been aimed at revealing its bedrock topography and imaging its tectonic architecture and evolution. Here we present the tectonic interpretation of regional-scale lineaments revealed by the Radarsat mosaic of Antarctica on the ice sheet surface in the Vostok–Dome C– Adventure Basin region. These lineaments appear in the radar backscatter textures as alignments of marked tonal variations with lengths of tens to hundreds of kilometers and were identifi ed using an automated methodology. We explore the origin scenarios for the ice sheet surface lineaments by comparing their azimuthal trends and spatial distribution with the main morphotectonic features of the bedrock. Azimuthal analysis reveals that lineaments cluster around two preferential directions interpreted as structural or tectonic domains. These show strong correlations with azimuths of tectonic fabrics in the bedrock. The main lineament domain parallels the morphotectonic features of the study area, namely the Adventure Basin and the Concordia and Aurora Trenches. The second lineament set corresponds to the mean orientation of the Lake Vostok depression. The spatial analyses of the two lineament domains strengthen our fi ndings and interpretations. Comparisons with wind and ice fl ow directions exclude their infl uence on the identifi ed lineament pattern. Results reveal the tectonic origin of the lineament domains, and demonstrate the method’s usefulness as a tool for tectonic studies of regions characterized by thick covers. These regions include other areas of the East Antarctic craton such as the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains, as well as deserts or surfaces of other planets.

This study presents the results of forward numerical models of a series of sections of the Aurora Trench (East Antarctica) derived from radio echo-sounding data that allowed to reconstruct the 3D shape of the Aurora Fault, a crustal listric normal fault characterized by a length exceeding 100 km. A similar extensional fault setting allows to replicate the asymmetric buried morphology of the magnetic basement at the Lake Vostok depression derived by the available gravity and magnetic profiles. Both the Aurora and Vostok listric fault reach their basal decollment at 34 km depth, possibly the base of the crust in this intracratonic environment. Integration of these results with the existing geologic interpretations of the tectonic origin of the Concordia Trench by normal faulting allowed to frame the Concordia, Aurora and Vostok normal faults within an intraplate transtensional corridor with a left-lateral movement component. The westward projection of the proposed strike-slip deformation belt may develop in correspondence of an older tectonic lineament stretching from the Eastern flanks of the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mts to the Lambert rift and characterized by a poly-phased complex tectonic history. The possible Cenozoic reactivation of these structures is discussed in the paper.

SUMMARY This study presents the interpretation of radio echo-sounding (RES) data collected during the 2003 geophysical campaign of PNRA (Italian National Research Project in Antarctica), which focused on the exploration of the Concordia Trench-Lake system in East Antarctica. The data allow us to identify a new lake (ITL-28) at the southern edge of the Concordia Trench and a series of N–S trending subglacial troughs cutting through the Belgica Highlands. We have mapped the bedrock morphology at 3 km resolution, which led to an improved geographical and geomorphological characterization of the Concordia Trench, Concordia Ridge, Concordia Lake and South Hills. Improved knowledge of the Concordia Trench allowed us to model the 3-D geometry of the Concordia fault, suggesting that it played a role in governing the morpho-tectonic evolution of the bedrock in the Dome C region, and to propose a Cenozoic age for its activity. We recognize the importance of catchment basin morphology in hosting subglacial lakes, and discuss the role played by tectonics, glacial scouring and volcanism in the origin of the trench lakes, basin lakes and relief lakes, respectively.

The evolution of deformation patterns during thrust-related folding is of importance for both industrial and academic purposes because of the control that it exerts on the migration and accumulation of fluids in reservoirs. The link between structural position and deformation pattern has been described in both theoretical and field works. On the other hand, the well-documented dependence of deformation structures on the mechanical rock properties and on the environmental conditions indicates that, during folding, structural, stratigraphic, and environmental variables interact to control the deformation pattern within folds. In this work we describe the deformation pattern of the Mt. Catria anticline (Northern Apennines, Italy) and we investigate its variability with (1) the across-strike structural position, and (2) the rock type in the same structural position. Point (1) allowed us to identify and use the syn-folding deformation structures to constrain the fold kinematics. The result of point (2) analyses allowed us to divide the exposed Umbro-Marchean multilayer into three major mechanical units characterised by specific deformation mechanisms and patterns.

The Antarctic plate occupies a unique geodynamic setting being mostly surrounded by divergent or transform margins. Major intracontinental basins and highlands characterize its bedrock, buried under the 34 Ma East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS). Their formation atop of the cratonic lithosphere in the interior of East Antarctica remains a major open question. Post-Mesozoic intraplate extensional tectonic activity has been proposed for their development and is supported by this work. Here we focus on the Adventure Subglacial Trench (AST) whose origin is poorly constrained and controversial, as currently available geophysical models suggest either extensional or compressional tectonic origin. The AST is an over 250-km-long, 60-km-wide subglacial trough, elongated in the NNW–SSE direction adjacent to the westernmost flank of the Wilkes Subglacial Basin, and is parallel to regional scale alignments of magnetic and gravimetric anomalies. Geophysical campaigns allowed better definition of the AST physiography showing its typical half-graben geometry. The rounded morphology of the western flank of the AST was simulated through tectonic numerical modelling. We consider the subglacial landscape to primarily reflect a preserved relict of the tectonic processes affecting the interior of East Antarctica in the Cenozoic, due to the negligible erosion/deposition capability of the EAIS. The bedrock morphology was replicated through the activity of the listric Adventure Fault, characterized by a basal detachment at the base of the crust (34 km) and a vertical displacement of 2.5 km. This length suggests its regional/crustal importance. The predicted displacement is interpreted either as a newly formed fault or as the partial reactivation of a weaker zone along a major Precambrian crustal-scale tectonic boundary. The extensional regime in the AST is part of a more extensive 800-km long intraplate corridor characterized by nearly along-strike extension in Cenozoic times with a left-lateral transpressional component. This corridor may represent the effect of far-field stresses induced by plate motions.

The Cenozoic activity of the De Geer transform fault, which releases the relative movements between of the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, produced a wide deformation zone that presently affects the western coast of the Svalbard (Spitsbergen Island) as testified in the extended rock exposure along the West Spitsbergen fold and thrust belt. In particular, the still ongoing tectonic activity along this transform is responsible for the formation of fault strands characterized by highly fractured damage zones (DZs). These DZs represent hydraulic conduit that steer the pathway of deep fluids (e.g., oil and gas). Understanding the fracturing evolution in fault DZs represent a key factor to model potential reservoirs in the arctic region (and in the Barents Sea area) for various purposes including natural resources development (oil/gas production), gas storage (CO2) as well as nuclear waste disposal. In the present work, we analyze two faults representative of the status of brittle deformation of Vendian carbonates in Svalbard where it was possible to study the fracturing in their DZ. The intensity of brittle deformation was quantified and its spatial variation within the DZ was modeled through an empirical/physical approach that allowed to develop a predictive model to quantify fracturing. This model was prepared by comparing field measurements with an empirical equation taking into account the main fracturing and sealing processes operating during the fault activity. Results can be successfully applied to other carbonate rocks, including the Svalbard analogues of the carbonate reservoirs in the Barents Sea.

A fundamental yet still unresolved puzzle provided by cataclasis is whether particle size reduction mostly progresses through time by the same fragmentation mechanism or not. Available field, laboratory and numerical modelling results on the evolution of cataclastic rocks are still controversial. The evidence that cataclastic rocks exert a primary control on the frictional strength, stability, seismic velocity and permeability properties of fault zones encourages further research on cataclasis. Here, we report data on particle shape from natural cataclastic rocks in poorly layered carbonates in the Apulian foreland of the Southern Apennines of Italy. Particle shape analyses show that particle angularity decreases with increasing size and, for a given size class, it decreases with increasing fractal dimension of the particle size distribution. These results offer support to the temporally and spatially variable nature of rock comminution.

SUMMARY We present the interpretation of 11 radio echo-sounding (RES) missions carried out over the Vostok‐Dome Concordia region during the Italian Antarctic expeditions in the period 1995‐ 2001. The extension and the density of the radar data in the surveyed area allowed to reconstruct a reliable subglacial morphology and to identify four relevant morphological structures namely: the Aurora trench, the Concordia trench, the Concordia ridge and the South Hills. These structures show evidence compatible with the presence of tectonic features. Morphological considerations indicate their development in Cenozoic time. Hybrid cellular automata (HCA)based numerical modelling allowed to justify a possible role played by the tectonics of the Aurora and Concordia trench evolution. This was accomplished by matching the bed profiles along opportunely projected sections with the modelled surfaces as derived by the activity of normal faults with variable surfaces within the continental crust. The Vostok‐Dome C region is characterized by a large number of subglacial lakes. From the analysis of basal reflected power echo, we identified 14 new lakes and obtained information about their physiography as well as their possible relations with tectonics. We propose a grouping of subglacial lakes on the base of their physiography and geological setting, namely relief lakes, basin lakes and trench lakes. Relief lakes located in the Belgica subglacial highlands and are characterized by sharp and steep symmetric edges, suggesting a maximum water depth of the order of 100 m. Their origin may well relate to localized, positive geothermal flux anomalies. Basin lakes located in the Vincennes subglacial basin and are characterized by wider dimension that allow the development of well-defined, flat ice surface anomalies. Trench lakes characterize the Aurora and Concordia trenches as the possible effect of normal fault activity.

Cumulative, polymodal normal (Gaussian distribution) statistics was applied to subsidiary fault data collected from damage zones associated with the Cenozoic Lanterman and Priestley intraplate right-lateral strike-slip fault systems in North Victoria Land, Antarctica. Results show that five Gaussian peaks out of seven in the Lanterman Fault and five out of nine in the Priestley Fault have almost coincident azimuthal values. We named these Gaussian peak pairs as consistent fault sets , arranged in a consistent kinematic architecture that is compatible with the Cenozoic regional strike-slip environment. Angular and kinematic relationships among subsidiary fault sets within the consistent kinematic architecture provide constraints for the inference of the state of stress along the Lanterman and Priestley fault systems. We interpret the fault pattern of the consistent kinematic architecture to be produced by early localisation of the principal displacement zone along pre-existing mechanical discontinuities inherited from the Early Paleozoic Ross Orogeny. Shear localisation was followed by subsidiary faulting at an angle to the principal displacement zone according to the Mohr–Coulomb–Byerlee failure criterion.

Fault-bend folding is a common folding mechanism in thrust and fold belts worldwide. The widely used kink-band geometric model of fault-bend folding necessitates complex ramp segmentations to reproduce the rounded shape of many natural thrust related anticlines. Curvilinear hinge sectors provide a geometric and kinematic alternative solution to kink bands for modelling curved-hinge folds. We developed an analytical solution for modelling fault-bend folding using circular hinge sectors. The velocity field of this kinematic solution is different from that associated with the classical, kink-style model. Our solution predicts the development of curvilinear anticlines above staircase fault geometries, the occurrence of limb rotation and, consequently, the development of rotational syngrowth wedges on both the forelimb and the crest. Conversely to the kink-style kinematics, curvilinear hinge sectors imply a dependence of deformation intensity from the fold shape and stratigraphic position of the folded layer. Application to natural thrust-related anticlines validates the effectiveness of curvilinear fault-bend folding.

Laboratory experiments on rock faulting show that processes of particle comminution in fault rocks are influenced by several parameters, including fault strike and normal stress across faults. In nature, normal stress across faults increases with increasing transpressional strike of faults. Accordingly, different structural fabrics and particle size distributions are expected for cataclastic rocks that have developed along faults with different transpressional orientations and comparable displacements within regional-scale strike-slip fault zones. Adjacent bands of cataclastic gouge and breccia were analysed from four small-scale fault zones. All have comparable displacements and very similar protolith (i.e. shallow-water limestone), structure, kinematics, size, and tectonic environment, but different transpressional strikes within the regional-scale left-lateral Mattinata strike-slip fault, Italy. An inverse linear relationship is found between fault transpressional angles and fractal dimensions of particle size distributions from cataclastic rock samples.

Our analyses of particle size in carbonate fault rocks show power law distributions with fractal dimensions spanning a broad range. This confirms that the idea of a persistent fragmentation mechanism for describing the entire evolution of natural cataclastic fault cores in carbonate rocks is inadequate. Conversely, we propose that the fragmentation mechanism progressively changes with the intensity of comminution. Slip localisation within narrow shear bands is favoured when a favourable cataclastic fabric with fractal dimensions D ∼ 2.6-2.7 is achieved in the fault zone. Intense comminution in the narrow shear zones produces the preferential formation of small diameter particles resulting in particle size distributions characterised by D values approaching or exceeding 3. The non-self-similar evolution of natural cataclastic rocks has an important impact on the frictional and permeability properties of fault zones.

This study describes a peculiar, yet common type of fracture showing a staircase trajectory, which forms in rocks with moderately weak planar anisotropies. The staircase fracture trajectory is given by alternating fracture segments oriented parallel to (LaP) or at an angle (ramp) with respect to the lamination/layering. The analyses has been accomplished on travertines, which are continental microbial/hydrothermal deposits having a typical poorly stratified yet strongly laminated texture. In these rocks, porosity and permeability have a high across-lamination variability and are mostly controlled by an interconnected and locally corroded array of permeable layers, fractures, and faults. Structural analysis integrated with analytical modeling provided a conceptual model of staircase fracture localization as a function of the travertine lamination dip. Lamination-parallel fracture segments localize within the porous laminae, mostly at the interface with tight laminae. Ramp-type fracture segments cut the lamination, connecting lamination parallel segments. Two types of staircase fracture can be modeled. The first group develops in sub horizontal to gently dipping deposits (lamination dip < 30 degrees) corresponding to low-energy depositional environments. The second group relates to staircase fractures developed in moderately to steeply dipping laminations (lamination dip > 30 degrees) and corresponds to high-energy environments. Major discoveries of hydrocarbon have been recently made in continental (lacustrine) microbial carbonates in the Brazilian South Atlantic margin, some of which exhibit a texture similar to those usually observed in travertines. Understanding of the lacustrine carbonates is still at an early stage. Given that in modern rift settings, vent-related thermal (travertine) and nonthermal (tufa) carbonates are a major component, the proposed conceptual model of staircase fracture localization contributes to the preparation of a model for the potential occurrence of high-permeability pathways in hydrocarbon and geothermal microbial reservoirs.

The evolution of surficial structures at the toes of orogens arises from the complex interplay between tectonic and surface processes. The internal architecture of syntectonic sediments has been shown to provide useful insights on the kinematic mechanism of folding. Two-dimensional templates of growth strata patterns associated to thrust-related anticlines are available in the literature. In this paper, we show the results of three-dimensional numerical modelling of growth fault-bend folds, fault-propagation folds, fixed limb length decollement folds and fixed limb dip decollement folds. We point out that total thickness contour maps, single syntectonic layer contour maps, and above all, the computation of their directional first-derivative maps, provide useful templates for inferring the kinematic mechanism of folding when compared with similar maps from natural examples. Application of these three-dimensional numerical models includes the comparison and supervised best fit with three-dimensional seismic reflection data sets. Numerical results are contrasted with the growth strata map patterns of the Mediano, Oliana and Pico del Aguila anticlines, in the Spanish Pyrenees.

The deformation associated with a number of kilometre-scale strike-slip fault zones which cut through outcropping carbonate rocks in the Southern Apennines was investigated at regional and outcrop scales. These faults trend roughly east-west and were studied at the Gargano Promontory on the Adriatic Coast tin the Apulian foreland and in the Matese Mountains, about 120 km to the west (within the Apenninic fold-and-thrust belt). The fault zones are 200-300 m wide and typically comprise a core surrounded by a damage zone. Within fault cores, fault rocks (gouges and cataclasites) typically occur along master slip planes; in damage zones, secondary slip planes and solution cleavage are the most important planar discontinuities. The protolith carbonates surrounding the fault zone at Gargano show little deformation, but they are fractured in the Matese Mountains as a result of an earlier thrust phase. Cleavage surfaces in the damage zone of the studied faults are interpreted to be fault propagation structures. Our field data indicate that cleavage-fault intersection fines are parallel to the normals of fault slip-vectors. The angle between a fault plane and the associated cleavage was found to be fairly constant (c. 40 degrees) at different scales of observation. Finally, the spacing of the solution cleavage surfaces appeared in general to be regular (with a mean of about 22 mm), although it was found to decrease slightly near a fault plane. These results are intended to provide a basis for predicting the architecture of fault zones in buried carbonate reservoirs using seismic reflection and borehole data.

In fault-related folds that form by axial surface migration, rocks undergo deformation as they pass through axial surfaces. The distribution and intensity of deformation in these structures has been impacted by the history of axial surface migration. Upon fold initiation, unique dip panels develop, each with a characteristic deformation intensity, depending on their history. During fold growth, rocks that pass through axial surfaces are transported between dip panels and accumulate additional deformation. By tracking the pattern of axial surface migration in model folds, we predict the distribution of relative deformation intensity in simple-step, parallel fault-bend and fault-propagation anticlines. In both cases the deformation is partitioned into unique domains we call deformation panels. For a given rheology of the folded multilayer, deformation intensity will be homogeneously distributed in each deformation panel. Fold limbs are always deformed. The flat crests of fault-propagation anticlines are always undeformed. Two asymmetric deformation panels develop in fault-propagation folds above ramp angles exceeding 29°. For lower ramp angles, an additional, more intensely-deformed panel develops at the transition between the crest and the forelimb. Deformation in the flat crests of fault-bend anticlines occurs when fault displacement exceeds the length of the footwall ramp, but is never found immediately hinterland of the crest to forelimb transition. In environments dominated by brittle deformation, our models may serve as a first-order approximation of the distribution of fractures in fault-related folds.

The nucleation and growth of thrust fault-related folds has been simulated using high-resolution sandbox Coulomb wedge-type analogue models. Thrust-related anticlines grew progressively from initial layerparallel shortening, to decollement folding, thrust-tip folding and eventually thrust-ramp folding. Thrust ramps nucleated in the central sector of the overturned forelimb of decollement folds, as a consequence of limb thinning. Thrust-tip folding occurred during outward migration of the ramp tips. The fault-propagation rate was greater at the lower ramp tip, which quickly joined the basal thrust flat, while folding continued beyond the upper tip. The development of the analogue model thrust fault-related folds by progressive changes in kinematics, from decollement folding to thrust-tip folding and finally thrust-ramp folding, compares well with analyses of naturally occurring thrust fault-related folds.

Late Cenozoic strike-slip tectonics and active faulting in Central Iran have been extensively described in the last decades. This study presents results of integrated structural and geomorphological analyses along the Kuh-e-Sarhangi Fault, a major NE-SW striking brittle deformation zone that cuts across the basement and Neogene-Quaternary cover successions at the north-western edge of the Lut Block. Structural investigations document post-Neogene NE-SW dextral transpressive tectonics and geomorphic evidence support a Late Quaternary age for the faulted alluvial fan deposits along the bedrock range fronts. Northward, the nearly parallel Great Kavir (Doruneh) Fault is known to have active left-lateral strike-slip kinematics, and its easternmost segment was considered as the northern margin of the Lut Block. The new findings impose reconsideration of the current regional kinematic models, with implications on the seismogenic fault networks of Central Iran. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The technique of the wavefield polarization is applied to ambient vibrations recorded in the Mefite d’Ansanto area, an important non-volcanic natural emission of low temperature CO2 enriched gases. Twenty-five measurements were performed in the study area, eleven near the emission site and the other fourteen in different sites within an area of 5 km. Polarization is assessed both in the frequency and time domain through the individual-station horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio and covariance-matrix analysis, respectively. We find a significant tendency of ground motion in the gas emission area to be polarized in the horizontal plane, with a N115° predominant trend. This polarization tends to disappear while moving far from the site. According to previous papers in other study areas, such a directional effect is likely caused by fault-induced fractures and tends to be orthogonal to the fracture strike. The predominant NW–SE regional faulting does not fit the N115° polarization direction. To explain observations, we propose an interpretation in terms of a NE–SW oriented, local transfer fault as inferred from the lineament analysis. The intersection of the damage zone of this fault with the regional NW–SE normal fault system could easily be the responsible for the gas emissions since it favors a locally increased crustal weakness.

SUMMARY The Pernicana Fault (PF) is the main structural element of Mt Etna and the northern boundary of a section sliding to the southeast. Observed ground motion records in the damage zone of the PF show strong variations of directional resonance in the horizontal plane. The observed resonance directions exhibit an abrupt rotation of azimuth by about 30 ◦ across the fault, varying from N166 ◦ on the north side to N139 ◦ on the south. We interpret the directional resonance observations in terms of changes in the kinematics and deformation fields on the opposite sides of the fault. The northern side is affected primarily by the left-lateral strike-slip movement, whereas the southern side, that is subjected also to sliding, is under a dominant extensional stress regime. Brittle deformation models based on the observed kinematic field predict different sets of fractures on the opposite sides of the fault: synthetic cleavages and extensional fractures are expected to dominate in the northern and southern sides, respectively. These two fracture fields have different orientations (N74 ◦ and N42 ◦ , respectively) and both show a near-orthogonal relation (∼88 ◦ in the northern sector and ∼83 ◦ to the south) with the azimuth of the observed directional resonance. We conclude that the direction of the largest resonance motions is sensitive to and has transversal relationship with the dominant fracture orientation. The directional amplification is inferred to be produced by stiffness anisotropy of the fault damage zone, with larger seismic motions normal to the fractures.

A model is presented that performs spectral deicing of mixed pixels in satellite images of glaciated areas. The model was tested in Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. For this region we assumed that pixels could be grouped in two broad categories representing pure ice and pure rock. Naturally mixed ice and rock pixels are present in satellite images; these were recomputed to separate the spectral component related to the rock fraction. We used Landsat TM images as input data and aerial photographs, maps and field surveys as reference data. By making use of sample populations of pixels corresponding to pure ice and to pure rock groundels (i.e. ground elements, the ground portions corresponding to each pixel), we detected the linear correlation between pairs of bands and selected the two most suitable bands. For every pixel falling between the correlation lines of the two categories, the rock fraction in the corresponding groundel was computed. This fractional value was then used to perform the automatic deicing process with which the DNs of the selected mixed pixels were recomputed. In the utilised Antarctic image, this process increases about 2.7 times the number of pixels in the pure rock category, allowing the production of enhanced images and, as a side product, a thematic map of rock percentage in the groundels.

A semipermanent Global Positioning System (GPS) network of 30 vertices known as the Victoria Land Network for Deformation Control (VLNDEF) was set up in the Austral summer of 1998 in northern Victoria Land (NVL), including Terra Nova Bay (TNB), Antarctica. The locations were selected according to the known Cenozoic fault framework, which is characterized by a system of NW‐SE regional faults with right‐lateral, strike‐slip kinematics. The TNB1 permanent GPS station is within the VLNDEF, and following its installation on a bedrock monument in October 1998, it has been recording almost continuously. The GPS network has been surveyed routinely every two summers, using high‐quality, dual‐frequency GPS receivers. In this study we present the results of a distributed session approach applied to the processing of the GPS data of the VLNDEF. An improved reference frame definition was implemented, including a new Euler pole, to compute the Antarctic intraplate residual velocities. The projection of the residual velocities on the main faults in NVL show present‐day activities for some faults, including the Tucker, Leap Year, Lanterman, Aviator, and David faults, with right‐lateral strike‐slip kinematics and local extensional and compressional components. This active fault pattern divides NVL into eight rigid blocks, each characterized by its relative movements and rigid rotations. These show velocities of up to several millimeters per year, which are comparable to those predicted by plate tectonic theory at active plate margins.

We describe the structural and petrophysical evolution of extensional fault zones developed in low porosity, poorly lithified, quartz-dominated sandstones from the Mio-Pliocene continental Barreiras Formation, NE Brazil. We studied eight fault zones developed as sands were lithified. Fault displacement ranges from a few centimetres to ∼50 m. A diagnostic feature of the studied fault zones is the lack of deformation bands, which typically develop in high porosity sand(stone)s. Structural and microstructural analyses, grain size and shape analyses, porosity and pore size analyses, and laboratory and in situ permeability measurements show relationships between deformation processes and hydrologic properties. Undeformed rocks are very poorly sorted, medium- to fine-grained, clay-rich sandstones with an average intergranular porosity of about 3%. Sandstones in damage zones record non-destructive dilatant granular flow and formation of opening-mode intergranular extensional fractures, which increase porosity, pore connectivity and permeability. Deformation in fault cores evolved from particulate flow to compactional cataclastic flow, with progressive grain size reduction increasing the amount of silt- and clay-size fractions. Porosity was dramatically reduced to an average value of 0.2% and permeability is generally lower than the related protoliths. All this evidence highlights a conduit/barrier behaviour of the studied fault zones, which significantly differs from the sealing behaviour of deformation band fault zones commonly observed in high-porosity sandstones.

SUMMARY Permeability in carbonates is strongly influenced by the presence of fracture patterns. Carbonate rocks achieve fracturing both during diagenesis and tectonic processes. Spatial distribution of brittle deformation rules the secondary permeability of carbonatic rocks and therefore the accumulation and the pathway of deep fluids (ground-water, hydrocarbon). This is particularly true in the development of faults where damage zone and fault core show different hydraulic properties. In this work we studied the brittle deformation in carbonates related to fault kinematics to better understand the hydraulic properties of fault rocks. Quantitative analyses of brittle deformation from field measurements were compared to numerical models performed by FRAPtre software. This numerical tool allows to study the 4D evolution of stress/ brittle deformation in fault related rocks.

[1] The Pliocene-Holocene Newer Volcanic Province in Victoria, southeast Australia, is a wide volcanic field site of the most recent volcanic activity of Australia. The intraplate signature and the localization on the northern side of the Southern Ocean have been used in the past to ascribe the volcanic activity either to the presence of a mantle hot spot or to thermal anomalies inherited from the seafloor spreading that separated Australia from Antarctica during the Gondwana breakup. The spacing and distribution of groups of eruption points suggests the presence of a 32 km deep mantle thermal anomaly. Alignments of eruption points indicate a strong tectonic control on magma emplacement mainly along NW-SE Mesozoic-Cenozoic structures and along N-S Palaeozoic and E-W Late Cretaceous structures. This volcano tectonic setting relates to the interference of the left-lateral kinematics of the major N-S trending faults associated with the Tasman Fracture Zone and the extensional structures of the Otway basin. This interpretation is also coherent with stress in situ data and focal mechanisms of earthquakes (SHmax oriented N150°). This interpretation enhances the role of the Tasman Fracture Zone, a major sinistral transform, on the reactivation of transtensional structures, and on triggering the magmatism of the Newer Volcanic Province.

Fault tip regions, relay ramps and accommodation zones in between major segments of extensional fault systems provide zones of additional structural and stratigraphic complexities and also significantly affect their hydraulic behaviour. The great interest for both academic and industrial purposes encouraged specific studies of fault tip regions that, in some cases, produced controversial results. We approached the study of fault tip regions by integrating structural, AMS and stratigraphic analyses of the tip of an extensional growth fault system in the Tarquinia basin, on the Tyrrhenian side of the Northern Apennines. Detailed structural mapping indicates the occurrence of systematic relationships between the orientation of the main subsidiary fault zones, the orientation and position of the two main joint sets developed in the fault damage zones, and the overprinting relationships between the two main joint sets themselves. Microstructural analysis of fault core rocks indicates a progression of deformation from soft-sediment to brittle conditions. The AMS study supports the evolution of deformation under a constantly oriented stress field. By combining this multidisciplinary information we propose an evolutionary model for the tip of the extensional growth fault system that accounts for the progressively changing sediment rheological properties, and for the time dependent subsidiary deformation pattern by invoking the interplay between the regional stress field and the local, kinematically-derived one by fault activity. We also speculate on the overall implications for fluid flow of the proposed evolutionary model.

Fault-related folds in fold-and-thrust belts and accretionary prisms are commonly simulated by three end-member classes of geometric models: decollement folding, fault-propagation folding, and fault-bend folding. A given model produces a fold shape that depends on the amount of shortening, the fault shape and, eventually, the fault propagation history. The great variety of geometric solutions implies that the final fold shape is adequate to distinguish among different folding mechanisms only in a limited suite of cases. Additional information to better constrain fold kinematics is provided by the analysis of growth strata patterns, which passively register the progressive evolution of deformation in the substratum. Availability of growth strata pattern templates associated with different geometric and kinematic solutions provides a useful tool for inferring the dominant kinematic pathways of natural thrust-related structures. In this paper, we present growth strata patterns associated with double-edge fault-propagation folding. The influence of the sedimentation rate, the fault shape, and the fault S/P ratio (i.e. slip versus ramp propagation rate) on growth strata architectures are investigated. Geometrical modelling and application to natural examples indicate that double-edge fault-propagation anticlines are characterised by growth triangles on both limbs. Their position and geometry relate to the ramp shape and propagation history, and on the sedimentation rate.

Fault-propagation folding is a common folding mechanism in thrust-and-fold belts and accretionary prisms. Several geometrical models relating the fold shape to the ramp shape have been proposed. In all these models, ramps always emanate from a basal fault and propagate upwards. We have developed a new kinematic and geometric model of fault-propagation folding, named double-edge fault-propagation folding. The model simulates folding at thrust ramps as a function of their nucleation site and propagation history within the folded multilayer. The fold shape depends on the initial length and location of the ramp, its dip, and the S / P ratio (i.e. incremental ramp slip versus propagation) of both the upper and lower ramp tips. This solution increases the geometrical flexibility of fault-propagation folding reducing, for example, the direct dependence between the backlimb dip and the ramp dip, as double-edge fault-propagation folding is characterised by a backlimb panel not necessary parallel to the ramp. Non-parallelism between the ramp and the backlimb is commonly observed in thrust-related anticlines, within fold-and-thrust belts and accretionary prisms. The excess layer-parallel shear imposed by the development of double-edge fault-propagation folding can be easily accommodated by discrete faulting and/or penetrative deformation. The dependence of the fold shape on the fault behaviour provides a tool for including the role of mechanical stratigraphy and environmental conditions of deformation into kinematic models. Natural examples of anticlines that could be modelled by double-edge fault-propagation are presented.

The Ross Sea region of the East Antarctic plate provides evidence for intraplate tectonic activity in 13 Cenozoic times. Still unresolved are the cause, timing and kinematics of this intraplate tectonism. By 14 integrating and discussing the different (kinematic and temporal) signals of Cenozoic tectonism, intraplate 15 dextral shearing is recognized as the main tectonic regime controlling the structural architecture of the Ross 16 Sea region from the Mid-Eocene (c. 40–50 Ma) onward. We speculate that propagation and persistence of this 17 tectonic regime through time constitutes a feasible seismogenetic framework to explain past and current 18 tectonism in the Ross Sea region.

The axial zone of the Ethiopian Rift is made up of Quaternary extensional fractures and normal faults. Field analysis was performed to study the mechanism of development of the normal faults. The collected data show that the normal faults (1) are subvertical at surface, (2) have dilation proportional to the throw, and (3) end laterally as extension fractures, that is, tension fractures which gradually decrease in dilation. The minimum measured opening of normal faults is 2 m and the maximum measured dilation of the extension fractures is 4 m. The minimum measured length of normal faults is 800 m and the maximum measured length of the extension fractures is 400 m. The collected data suggest that the normal faults nucleate from wider extension fractures in the axial zone. When the extension fractures reach critical dimensions (length=∼800 m and dilation=2–4 m, corresponding to a predicted depth of ∼700 m), the shear rupture behavior controls the further propagation of the fractures at depth. This mechanism has close similarities with models previously proposed for fault formation along the oceanic ridge of Iceland. This suggests common rifting processes along diverging plates, independently from the oceanic or continental nature of the lithosphere.

Starting from Pliocene times, the Apulian foreland in southern Italy has undergone a flexural process underneath the Apennines thrust-fold belt. Mesozoic carbonate beds from the exposed Apulian forebulge are intensely dissected by systematic vertical joints striking parallel to the NW-trending flexure hinge. The sedimentary cover involved in the flexure consists of a 5.5 km thick succession of Mesozoic-Cenozoic carbonate beds strongly interpenetrated along bedding surfaces and overlying Triassic anhydrites and dolomites. On the assumption of the applicability of the linear elastic theory, the flexural curve of the Apulian foreland is reconstructed by best fitting a set of data derived from logs of oil wells and referring to the height of the base of Pliocene sediments. A set of flexural parameters is obtained from the reconstructed flexural curve. By using these parameters in solving the flexure equations for the fibre stress, we obtained a flexure-related hinge-perpendicular fibre stress in the outer arc of the Apulian forebulge in excess of −100 MPa. This value is far greater than the tensile strength of the exposed carbonate rocks. This result supports the hypothesis that the flexure-related fibre stress in the Apulian forebulge can have driven the initiation of the observed regional systematic joints. This model may be applied to any flexed foreland plate and constitutes an alternative to the classical model of elastic response of rocks to the variations of lithostatic loads through time that has been often invoked to explain sets of systematic joints over large areas of foreland regions.

We studied the nucleation and growth of cataclastic fault cores from fractured damage zones in extensional and strike-slip fault zones in carbonate rocks. Analysed fault zones have similar protolith lithology and sedimentary fabric, but different geometry, kinematics, size, tectonic environment and deformation history. Orthorhombic rock lithons, a few decimetres in size, characterise the structural fabric of damage zones. Lithons derive from the intersection of a dominant fracture/cleavage set with bedding and/or joints. At the damage zone–fault core transition, orthorhombic lithons reduce in size and approach an isometric shape. Their cross-sectional aspect ratio has an average value of 1.4. Analysed fault cores have similar rock textures, sorting and comminution degree. Particle-size distributions of fault core rocks show linear trends in log-log graphs and average fractal dimension of 2.5. Our results on rock fabrics suggest that fault core development initiates from rock masses in damage zones, where the shape anisotropy of orthorhombic lithons favours additional fracturing at high angle to their long axes. Eventually, smaller, nearly isometric lithons generate from repeated fracturing of orthorhombic lithons. When the aspect ratio of these lithons approaches the threshold value of about 1.4, particle rotation is favoured and cataclastic flow starts. Owing to the granular nature of the damage zone-fault core transitions in carbonate rocks, analogies with the nucleation of deformation bands in sandstones can be established. Our results may be of use to the industry for quantitative characterisation of fault zone permeability. According to the proposed model, radical changes on the permeability properties are expected during the growth of fault cores.

The Ethiopian Rift is characterized by several Quaternary calderas. Remote sensing and field analyses were used to investigate the regional structural control on three calderas (Fantale, Gariboldi, Gedemsa) in the axial part of the rift. These calderas are located along the Wonji Fault Belt (WFB), a zone of Quaternary NNE–SSW normal faults and extensional fractures. The three calderas show E–W elongation and major E–W vent alignments, oblique with regard to the mean NW–SE extension direction. No significant evidence of E–W tectonic structures has been found near the calderas, the only relevant systems being those of the WFB. Conversely, left-lateral E–W-trending faults are present at the rift borders and on the Nubia and Somalia plateaus, implying a predominant pre-rift activity. The E–W fractures were partly reactivated during rifting, possibly controlling the development of the magma chambers. Thus, the E–W elongation of the calderas would be the surface expression of such a control, rather than the result of regional extension. An evolutionary model on the role of different structures on magmatism at different crustal levels within the rift is proposed.

We present the results of field investigations carried out at the southern termination of the Priestley Fault, a major Cenozoic right-lateral strike-slip fault system in northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. The Priestley Fault was originally traced from offshore seismic profiles. Its onshore prosecution was inferred from the regional geological picture. Our work provides the first robust dataset on the kinematics and structural architecture of the Priestley Fault. The fault system includes a principal displacement zone (PDZ), where most horizontal displacement is accounted for, and a transtensional splay zone (TSZ) in the southern side consisting of a major basin at the fault tip, the Terror Rift, and minor ones paralleling it cratonward. Part of the strike-slip displacement is transferred by fault splaying from the principal displacement zone to the basin-boundary faults in the transtensional splay zone. The principal displacement zone is characterised by strongly transpressive deformation and this contrasts with the extensional component occurring in the transtensional splay zone. Such a contrast is only apparent because the two regions are kinematically linked. Transfer of the residual right-lateral strike-slip displacement from the tip region of the principal displacement zone to the basin-boundary fault systems of the Terror Rift represents the most effective displacement compensation mechanism at the termination of the Priestley Fault. It provides an additional solution for reducing the well known and still fully unsolved discrepancy between large translations of adjacent crustal blocks and the lack of comparable displacement values in their boundary strike-slip fault systems. The unquestionable evidence of intense Cenozoic brittle deformations in north Victoria Land imposes a re-examination of the regional tectonic framework, commonly interpreted as the mere result of the Early Paleozoic Ross Orogeny.

Recent hydrocarbon discoveries in the Southern Apennines of Italy have focussed attention on the importance of studying fracturing and cataclasis in carbonate rocks because of their fundamental impact on reservoir permeability and connectivity. The Narni Anticline in the central Apennines consists of a stack of easterly-verging carbonate thrust sheets compartmentalized by extensional and strike-slip fault zones. The structure provides afield analogue for studying the evolution of superimposed fold- and fault-related fractures in carbonate reservoir rocks. The fracture pattern at the Narni Anticline developed as a result of three mechanisms: (a) layer-parallel shortening predating folding and faulting; (b) thrust-related folding and further thrust breakthrough; and (c) extensional and strike-slip faulting. Along-strike (longitudinal) fractures developed during progressive rollover fault-propagation folding, and their intensity depends on the precise structural position within the fold: fracture intensity is high in the forelimb and low in the crest. The 3-D architecture of the mechanical anisotropy associated with thrusting, folding, and related fracturing constrained the location and geometry of subsequent extensional and strike-slip faulting. The superimposition in damage zones of a fault-related cleavage on the pre-existing fracture pattern, which is associated with layer-parallel shortening and thrust-related folding, resulted in rock fragmentation and comminution, and the development of cataclastic bands. The evolution of fracturing in the Narni Anticline, its role in constraining thrust breakthrough trajectories and the location of extensional and strike-slip faults, and the final development of low-permeability cataclastic bands, will be relevant to studies of known oilfields in the Southern Apennines, as well as for future exploration.

A sandbox analog modeling research program was used to study the detailed evolution of doubly-vergent thrust wedges. High-resolution multilayers of thin alternating sand and mica layers were used in contractional Coulomb wedge experiments to simulate deformation of anisotropic, brittle upper crustal strata in doubly-vergent orogens. Experiments incorporating syntectonic sedimentation in foreland basins and in piggyback basins were also carried out. Our laboratory models evolved in two main stages: (1) initial high-velocity thrusting in the retrowedge and high-frequency together with low displacement folding and thrusting in the prowedge; and (2) low-frequency, high-displacement synchronous thrusting in the prowedge and low-velocity thrusting in the retrowedge. Transition from stage I to stage II occurred when the growing wedges reached the critical height at which they behaved as a backstop for further prowedge accretion. Addition of syntectonic sediments increased the persistence of stage I and triggered out-of-sequence thrusting in the axial zone of the experimental orogens. Thrust motion was stick-slip. Retrovergent thrusting occurred along a long-lived ramp whose lower tip was located at the subduction slot. Provergent kink bands nucleated at the subduction slot in stage I. In contrast, during the second stage of wedge evolution, kink bands nucleated in a piggyback fashion in the foreland far from the subduction slot and then evolved into high-displacement faults that remained active up until the end of the experiments, at progressively decreasing rates of thrusting. The axial zones of the model wedges were characterized by fast uplift rates during stage I due to backward translation of the belt along the retrovergent, long-lived ramp and due to the localization of deformation close to the subduction slot. Outward migration of the deformation front in the prowedge region during stage II caused the progressive decrease in the rate of the wedge uplift, until it eventually stopped. Analytical models to quantify the Coulomb behavior in the wedges validated the reversal of thrust polarity with increasing shortening, triggered by the buildup of the topographic load during deformation. This thrust polarity reversal highlights problems with the classic concept of back thrusting as a reflection of a significant change in the deformation regime. Our results compare well with the kinematic evolution of natural accretionary prisms and of thrust-and-fold belts such as the Lesser Antilles Arc System, the Mediterranean Ridge, and the Pyrenees.

The Tyrrhenian margin of Central Italy underwent extension during Pliocene and Quaternary. Extension occurred mainly through NW–SE normal faults, bordering a sequence of Plio-Quaternary basins. These basins are offset by coeval NE–SW faults, which show strike–slip and normal motions and have been interpreted as transfer faults. Plio-Quaternary volcanic activity along the margin occurred along a NW–SE belt, systematically in correspondence with NE–SW transverse systems. The Campi Flegrei Volcanic District (CFVD), on the Southern Tyrrhenian margin, consists of an active NE–SW volcanic ridge developed along NE–SW fractures. We performed a structural field analysis with analogue and mechanical models to investigate the role of transverse structures upon volcanism at Campi Flegrei. Field analysis at Campi Flegrei recognized NE–SW and, to a lesser extent, coeval NW–SE active fractures. Analogue experiments have simulated the development of transfer fault systems in brittle extensional domains. The experiments show that subvertical transfer faults connect offset adjacent normal faults dipping 60°. The mechanical model is based on the stress equations in uniaxial lithostatic conditions and absence of regional stresses. It shows how pre-existing subvertical fractures require the smallest magmatic pressures to be penetrated. For a given magmatic pressure, subvertical fractures might be penetrated more deeply, tapping more easily primitive magmas. These results suggest that the CFVD is located along a NE–SW transfer zone connecting NW–SE regional normal faults. Volcanic activity along such NE–SW trend would be induced by the subvertical dip of the transfer faults. The subvertical dip of transfer faults also suggests an explanation for the emission of the more primitive products along NE–SW systems at Campi Flegrei. These considerations find a wider application on the remaining volcanic districts of the margin, located in the same overall structural setting.

Disjunctive, spaced solution cleavage in carbonate rocks is genetically associated with the propagation of the left-lateral, strike-slip Mattinata Fault in the Gargano Promontory, Italy. Typical cleavage development is restricted within the 200–300-m wide fault zone, which is bounded by virtually unfractured wall rocks. The cleavage consists of sub-parallel solution surfaces, which are often reactivated as sheared solution planes. Geometrical and kinematic relationships exist between the fault and the associated cleavage planes, thus: (1) cleavage–fault intersection lines lie parallel to the fault and the sheared cleavage rotational axes and (2) the cleavage–fault angle is almost constantly equal to 40°. A model for the development of the Mattinata Fault is proposed in which the cleavage surfaces are interpreted as fault-propagation deformations. Cleavage nucleates as solution planes at the front of the advancing fault as the result of stress concentration in this region. Two distinct, time-sequential processes are shown to operate during the fault propagation: (1) typical millimetre- to centimetre-spaced solution surfaces form in the distal tip zone of the advancing fault plane; (2) as the tip advances, the fault plane breaks through the cleavage as minor shear displacements reactivate some of these nascent surfaces. These observations may prove useful in understanding mechanisms for fault-controlled enhanced/reduced permeability and fluid pathways.

A lithologic investigation has been performed on the Tarn Flat area, Antarctica, based on Landsat-TM and SPOT-XS processed images and on radiometric field data acquired by an EXOTECH radiometer. Results from the field survey, performed during the austral summer 1994-95 expedition, were used to verify the ability of satellite images to discriminate between the main rock. Principal Component transformation allowed to enhance the spectral information of rocks, despite the high band correlation of TM data, while high-pass filtering and TM-SPOT merging allowed a fairly accurate detection of morphologic features. A supervised classification has been carried out on the processed satellite images as a further demonstration of the utility of remote observation to investigate extreme environments.

New geological, geophysical and seismological data produced in the last decade allow an improved definition of the kinematics of the Tyrrhenian Sea-central Apennines-Adriatic Sea system. The integration of these different types of dataset outlines a complex E-W deformational belt running from the Adriatic Sea, at Gargano latitudes, to the Latium-Abruzzi Platform domain (central Apennines). Its possible prosecution in the Tyrrhenian Sea is discussed. This belt has its own seismotectonic characteristics, and divides the Apennines into two zones with different seismotectonic behaviour. All these data were integrated into a multidisciplinary model that results in the introduction of a strike-slip displacement sometimes in Pliocene to Recent times along the central Apennines-Adriatic Sea E-W belt. This relative motion can take for the strike-slip block tectonics observed in the central Apennines as well as for the uplift of Gargano and Tremiti Islands areas, including their seismicity. The displacement is related to a differing behaviour of the chain-foreland systems across this bend and can be justified either by assuming a partially active sinking of the southern Adriatic lithosphere or a slower sinking processes in the northern Adriatic one.

New seismological and structural data from the central Adriatic—Gargano promontory area demonstrate that the current models of an aseismic and slightly deformed Adriatic block have to be revised. A seismically active deformational belt is mapped along two main fault systems, the Tremiti Islands and Mattinata faults. Moreover, geologic and geophysical evidence suggests that a more extensive lithospheric boundary may cut across the central Italian peninsula to the Tyrrhenian basin.
