The spatial pattern of the altitudinal limit of beech woods in the Northern Apennines and its correlation with the Fagus sylvatica thermal requirements were studied. The study area was the whole northern side of the Northern Apennines (latitude 44° N), including a timberline. The pattern was described on a scale of 1:25,000, using digitized phytosociological vegetation maps. The timberline elevation ranges from 1,200 to 1,825 m a.s.l., with the highest range at 1,525 to 1,725 m and a peak (13%) at 1,600–1,625 m. As suggested by the known beech thermal requirements, the following thermal parameters were considered: mean annual temperature, mean of the coldest month (January), mean of the warmest month (July); days with maximum temperatures >10°C and summer mean (June to September). The values were calculated using data for 1951–2002 from six weather stations. The present upper timberline (1,825 m) corresponds to the following: i) mean annual temperature of 4.5°C; ii) coldest month mean temperature of −2.3°C; iii) summer mean of 11.5°C; iv) warmest month mean temperature of 13°C; v) 139 days with maximum temperatures of 10°C or higher. The mean temperature of the warmest month corresponds to the July mean temperature in maritime mountains, such as the Appalachians and the New Zealand Alps (13°C). The geographical location of the Northern Apennines close to the Mediterranean Sea seems to indicate that such a conclusion is reliable. The spatial pattern of the beech wood altitudinal limit on the northern Apennines and its correlation with the heat deficiency of Fagus sylvatica is under study. On the whole northern side of the Northern Apennines, including a tree line, the pattern of the wood limit was digitized on a scale of 1: 25 000. This limit stretches for 354 km. Adjacencies between beech woods and natural plant communities were measured to identify the present length of the natural wood limit. This limit has a length of 163 km and lies entirely 1600 m a.s.l. Adjacencies to Vaccinium dwarf shrublands (71%) and Brachypodium genuense grasslands (21%) prevail. The values of the thermal parameters were calculated using fifty years (1951-2000) data from five weather stations. Linear regressions of values vs elevation showed that the present highest beech limit on the chain (1875 m a.s.l) corresponds to a mean temperature of the coldest month (January) of -2.5 °C, to a mean annual temperature of 4.2 °C, to a summer mean of 11.0 °C, to a mean of the warmest month (July) of 12.7°C and to 132 days with maximum temperatures above 10°C. These results are only a first approximation to the lowest beech heat limits, as they derive from an adiabatic interpolation of temperature data from stations which are far from the local altitudinal limits of woods. In addition, geomorphology can locally affect the altitudinal distribution of trees and, in turn, different corresponding isothermes. A deeper insight into the beech heat constraints can be provided by dendrochronological and dendroecological analyses. Two study areas were considered: Mt. Giovo-Rondinaio and Mt. Prado-Cusna. The wood limits and the isolated trees above such limits were georeferenced. Samplings were made along a transect composed of three plots (10 x 30 m) at different altitudes: the first plot at the tree line, the second one at the wood limit and the third plot 50 m below the second one. For each plot 12 trees were chosen and for each tree two samples were taken with an increment borer. Ring width data were correlated to temperature and precipitation data from 1851 to the present. In general a high autocorrelation was found: the annual growth of beech heavily affects its growth in the two following years. On Mt. Giovo-Rondinaio there are significant correlations between ring width and precipitations rather than with temperatures. On Mt Prado the annual width seems more correlated to the temperatures of the coldest months. Every tree was dated. On Mt. Giovo-Rondinaio most stems date back to the first decades of the 20th century and there are no significant differences between the age of trees at the wood limit and the trees at a lower altitude. A different situation occurs on Mt. Prado where at the wood limit stems date back to the second half of the 20th century. In this area trees above the wood limit are younger than trees sampled at a lower altitude. These results lead us to suppose that on the Mt Prado-Cusna the present altitudinal wood limit at 1677m a.s.l is far from a natural condition, perhaps due to a greater human impact until a few decades ago. On Mt. Giovo-Rondinaio the wood limit at 1738 m a.s.l. could be nearer to its local upper altitude.

The case study of SCI (Site of Community Importance) of “Monte Vigese” (IT4050013) was conducted to develop appropriate techniques for quantifying and analysing the landscape temporal pattern since 1807. The SCI is located in the Emilia-Romagna region (Northern Apennines, Italy) and covers 617 ha, within the basin of the Reno river. Elevation ranges from 495 to 1089 m, and the bioclimate has submediterranean features; the geological substrate consists mostly of sandstone and in some part clay. Vegetation includes prevailingly coppices where Castanea sativa is widespread. Methods were based on geographical landscape change analysis, using old cadastral maps (1807, 1924) and a recent phytosociological map. Maps were analyzed by a diachronic GIS. The database for this GIS is discussed in detail.

L’immagine attuale dei territori urbani è quella di una rete di centri dai limiti diffusi in forma discontinua lungo le linee di flusso. La città contemporanea si presenta priva di identità, non più compatta, bensì disgregata in un esteso margine periurbano, caratterizzato da insediamenti dispersi e decentralizzati. Il processo di diffusione insediativa (urban sprawl) incide gravemente sul sistema paesaggio (inteso come dimensione ecologica del territorio), provocando disturbi e stress di natura strutturale e funzionale che si traducono in un progressivo degrado del paesaggio, un aumento della fragilità dei sistemi ambientali che lo compongono ed un impoverimento della biodiversità (dal livello genetico a quello dei sistemi ambientali). Gli elevati costi ambientali connessi alle nuove modalità di organizzazione dello spazio rendono necessario approfondire la conoscenza del fenomeno, definendo un metodo di analisi spaziale che guidi le scelte decisionali e gestionali. A tale scopo si propone un set di indici di paesaggio (landscape metrics) per la quantificazione di indicatori spaziali associati allo sprawl, quali il consumo di suolo, la decentralizzazione dei sistemi urbani, la complessità della forma delle zone edificate, la dispersione insediativa, il grado di integrazione di diversi usi del suolo, la frammentazione ambientale e l’eterogeneità del paesaggio. Il set di indici proposto si presta allo svolgimento di indagini comparative diacroniche e sincroniche. In particolare, la conoscenza delle dinamiche di sviluppo spaziale di uno specifico sistema urbano si pone alla base della stima delle future tendenze evolutive e delle azioni volte a mantenere rapporti sostenibili tra usi antropici del territorio e diversità ambientale.

The landscape - a geographical and ecological space where interaction between its elements creates a unique pattern - is transformed by spatial reorganization of its elements due to interaction between human impact and natural processes. Comparing land use/land cover maps of different years highlights the main trends in vegetation types. The Mt. Vigese SCI (Site of Community Importance) is an excellent example of a mosaic where coltural systems dating from different periods are found together with highly natural systems. The changes of the last 200 years (1807-2005) were assessed on the basis of cadastral maps (1807, 1924) and aerial photographs. A geographical database from these different sources was created. Despite the difficulty of standardization, the historical cadastral data was found to be invaluable and is still very relevant if we consider that the well delineation of chestnut orchards is the real starting point for any study of community dynamics.

La vegetazione del SIC “Monte Vigese”, nell'Appennino settentrionale, valle del Reno, è stata analizzata allo scopo di redigere una carta alla scala 1: 10 000 in ambiente GIS. Insieme alla carta della vegetazione viene presentata una carta della distribuzione degli habitat di interesse comunitario. Il SIC ha una superficie di 617 ettari. L'ambito altitudinale va dai 495 ai 1089 metri. Il substrato geologico è costituito formazioni arenacee che “galleggiano” sulle argille del ComplessoCaotico Eterogeneo. La vegetazione è prevalentemente di tipo forestale e deriva per lo più dall'evoluzione di castagneti abbandonati. Si tratta di querceti misti e di un faggeto, limitato alla vetta del Vigese. L'analisi fitosociologica ha consentito di attribuire i querceti misti alle associazioni Knautio-Quercetum pubescentis Ubaldi 1995 aceretosum opulifolii subass. nova e Ostryo-Aceretum opulifolii dryopteridetosum Ubaldi et alii 1993 nell'ambito dell'alleanza Carpinion orientalis Horvat 1958 e il faggeto all'associazione Daphno laureolae-Fagetum Ubaldi 2003 (Geranio nodosi-Fagion Gentile 1974). Sono frequenti cedui di castagno che sono stati attribuiti al tipo castagneti a Luzula pedemontana, a connotazione acidofila. Gli altri tipi di vegetazione compongono un mosaico dove sono prevalenti gli aspetti di vegetazione postcolturale e gli arbusteti a Prunus spinosa. Tra gli habitat di interesse comunitario censiti i più estesi sono rappresentati dalle foreste di castagno, le formazioni a Juniperus communis su lande o praterie calcaree, le praterie sub-atlantiche semisecche o molto secche su calcare. Di interesse fitogeografico le popolazioni di Quercus ilex su rupi arenacee.

I paesaggi culturali, originati da interazioni a lungo termine tra l'uomo e l'ambiente naturale, sono soggetti a rapide trasformazioni al variare della pressione antropica. Tutto il basso Appennino Settentrionale si presenta come paesaggio culturale in trasformazione. In questo ambito, il bacino idrografico del torrente Lavino (Bacino del Reno, Provincia di Bologna) fornisce un significativo caso-studio. Il bacino di 8336 ha si colloca in un ambito altitudinale fra l’alta pianura padana e gli 800 m s.l.m. Il pattern temporale della vegetazione è stato descritto in ambiente GIS mediante il confronto di carte della vegetazione (1: 25 000) prodotte mediante l’interpretazione e la digitalizzazione di foto aeree relative agli anni 1954-55 e 1998-99. Il sistema di classificazione è stato basato sulla nomenclatura e l’impostazione gerarchica del CORINE Land Cover. Sono state complessivamente identificate 10 categorie. I dati di pattern spaziale ottenuti con ArcView 3.1 sono stati analizzati con algoritmi propri dell’Ecologia del Paesaggio (McGarrigal & Marks 1995). Per valutare le variazioni del paesaggio su di esse è stato utilizzato il metodo statistico dell’analisi delle Componenti Principali (PCA). L'overlay delle carte della vegetazione 1954 e 1998 ha consentito di valutare l’entità della trasformazione del paesaggio nella valle del torrente Lavino ed, con riferimento superfici forestali, di evidenziarne le aree caratterizzate da continuità di lungo periodo.

The spatial pattern of the northern Apennine upper timberline and its correlation with the heath deficiency in Fagus sylvatica (European beech) was studied. The study area covers the northern side of the Northern Apennines including a timberline, at a latitude of about 44° N. The pattern of the timberline was described on a scale of 1: 25 000, using a digitized map derived from phytosociological vegetation maps. As suggested by the literature on heat deficiency in beech the following thermal parameters were considered: annual mean; summer mean (from June to September); mean of the coldest month (January); mean of the warmest month (July); days with more than 10 °C. The values were calculated using fifty years (1951-2002) of data from five weather stations. Linear regressions of values vs elevation were carried out. The altitudinal distribution of parameter values which correspond to the lowest heat requirements of F. sylvatica and their coincidence with the spatial pattern of the timberline showed that the present upper beech timberline (1875 m) confirms only the hypothesis of its coincidence with the mean temperature of the coldest month (January: -2.5 °C). The other data are slightly different from those supplied in the literature.
