Given current emissions trends an increase in global temperatures in excess of 2°C is highly likely in the coming century. In this context, it seems increasingly probable that states may consider solar geoengineering as a stop-gap climate response. Solar geoengineering refers to measures that aim to alleviate some measure of global warming by intentionally increasing the amount of the sun's energy that is reflected into space. Currently the two most discussed solar geoengineering techniques involve either marine cloud brightening or dispersing aerosols in the stratosphere. These techniques could be relatively inexpensive, are within the technological capacities (after a brief period of development) of technologically-advanced countries, and could have an almost immediate impact on temperatures. Yet, while solar geoengineering might potentially be utilised to manage some climate-linked security threats, it itself would create new security challenges. Consequently, this paper explores potential international security implications for Australia if a regional state, or group of states, initiates a solar geoengineering program. We conclude that since solar geoengineering is unlikely to become a first-order international issue, disputation over solar geoengineering will likely reflect, or act as a proxy for, wider patterns of state interaction. However, scenarios in which China and the United States take different positions, or in which there are divisions among regional powers, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Singapore would pose the greatest threat to Australia's national security. Historical evidence shows that the mean temperatures in the main cities in New Zealand have not changed significantly since records began in the 1860s1-4.Recently, the New Zealand Institute for Water and Air Research11, after a thorough Review, has presented a revised temperature anomaly chart for the average temperatures of seven of the major urban centres in New Zealand which shows that there has been an increasing temperature trend of 0.91°C per century since 1909.This paper analyses the Review and concludes that the results are compatible with the historic view of no significant change since records began. Although the trends found are explained by natural causes their statistical significance is very low because of the unsuitability of the "neighbour station" comparison used, and the inaccuracy of the measured and processed temperature measurements. This paper interprets macroscopic charcoal (>250 μm), humification and loss-on-ignition over the last ∼14 200 cal. BP from Goochs Swamp, located to the west of Sydney in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. This study aimed to investigate relationships between humans, climate and fire through time, primarily by comparison of these palaeoenvironmental indices with archaeological evidence from the region. Climatic forcing can explain all periods of change in the history of fire at Goochs Swamp: fire activity was variable during the Lateglacial-Holocene transition, low during the relatively stable climate of the early Holocene, and high but variable after the onset of modern El Niño from the mid Holocene. Although the dominant control on fire in this environment during the Holocene appears to be climate, fluctuations in the late Holocene may reflect anthropogenic fire or human responses to climate change. The archaeological record of the Blue Mountains and other parts of the Sydney Basin illustrates that Aboriginal people altered subsistence, resource and land-use patterns in the late Holocene. We propose that these cultural measures were adopted to overcome new risks as the frequency of ENSO events increased, and the natural fire regime and resource reliability changed. These strategies perhaps included a more systematic use of fire. The most parsimonious interpretation of the evidence for changes in fire activity at Goochs Swamp in the light of nearby archaeological evidence is that Aboriginal people used fire within a changing climatic framework. Conservation monitoring in Australia has assumed increasing importance in recent years, as societal pressure to actively manage environmental problems has risen. More resources than ever before are being channelled to the task of documenting environmental change. Yet the field remains crippled by a pervasive lack of rigour in analysing, reporting and responding to the results of data collected. Millions of dollars are currently being wasted on monitoring programmes that have no realistic chance of detecting changes in the variables of interest. This is partly because detecting change in ecological systems is a genuinely difficult technical and logistical challenge. However, the failure to plan, fund and execute sophisticated analyses of monitoring data and then to use the results to improve monitoring methods, can also be attributed to the failure of professional ecologists, conservation practitioners and bureaucrats to work effectively together. In this paper, we offer constructive advice about how all parties involved can help to change this situation. We use three case studies of recent monitoring projects from our own experience to illustrate ways in which the disconnect between science and bureaucracy can be bridged and some obstacles to collecting and analysing ecologically meaningful data sets can be overcome. We urge a continuing discussion on this issue and hope to stimulate a change in the culture of conservation monitoring in Australia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Internal heat sources may not only consume energy directly through their operation (e.g. lighting), but also contribute to building cooling or heating loads, which indirectly change building cooling and heating energy. Through the use of a building simulation technique, this paper investigates the influence of building internal load densities on the energy and thermal performance of air-conditioned office buildings in Australia. Case studies for air-conditioned office buildings in major Australian capital cities are presented. It is found that with a decrease of internal load density in lighting and/or plug load, both the building cooling load and total energy use can be significantly reduced. Their effect on overheating hour reduction would be dependent on the local climate. In particular, it is found that if the building total internal load density is reduced from the base case of “medium” to “extra low”, the building total energy use under the future 2070 high scenario can be reduced by up to 89–120 kWh/m² per annum, and the overheating problem could be completely avoided. It is suggested that the reduction in building internal load densities could be adopted as one of the adaptation strategies for buildings in the face of the future global warming. The article discusses issues and topics concerning global warming. Several nations around the world have taken measures to fight and counteract global warming. It was also proven that developed countries are the largest contributors of carbon dioxide emissions which are the primary cause of global warming including Great Britain, Australia, Brussels and Danish. It notes that Japan leads in energy efficiency. It was suggested that these great contributors of carbon emission should furnish 95 percent of the needed funds to counteract the global warming. Result of the research also shows that the main effect of carbon dioxide emission is not global warming but deadly acidification and micronutrient starvation of plant plankton in the sea, resulting to loss of all fish in 2048.

Abstract: There has been a heightened interest in sea surface temperature (SST) measurements during the past two decades, particularly on a global scale, due largely to the advent of several El Nino episodes and increasing worldwide concern about global warming. Because of the continuous global measurements of SST that satellites can provide they play a fundamental role in acquiring the data sets necessary for studies of such climate processes. However, the satellite data still need to be validated against in situ measurements in order to assess the accuracy of satellite SST retrieval algorithms. Validation of such SST retrieval algorithms is the primary aim of the SST measurement program component of the Hillarys Transect. This paper describes a methodology for the validation of satellite-derived SST as well as the seasonal variation of SST off the coast of southern Western Australia. It discusses the factors which may affect the quality of in situ validation data and concludes that measurements of the bulk sea surface temperature (BSST) should be the preferred in situ data source for validation of satellite-based algorithms derived from floating buoy measurements. In this study BSST data possessed superior accuracy over the coincident radiometric sea surface skin temperature (SSST) data, and were found to be significantly better for validation purposes under wind speed conditions below . The Eocene‐Oligocene transition (EOT) marked the initiation of large‐scale Antarctic glaciation. This fundamental change in Cenozoic climate state is recorded in deep‐sea sediments by a rapid benthic foraminiferal δ18O increase and appearance of ice‐rafted debris in the Southern Ocean. However, we know little about the magnitude of cooling associated with the EOT in shallow water environments, particularly at middle to high latitudes. Here we present new stratigraphic records of the C13r/C13n magnetochron boundary and the EOT in the clay‐rich Blanche Point Formation, South Australia. The Blanche Point Formation was deposited in a shallow shelf setting (water depths of <100 m) at a paleolatitude of ~51°S. We present high‐resolution δ18O, δ13C, and Mg/Ca records of environmental change from well‐preserved benthic foraminifera of latest Eocene age at this site. A marked, negative δ13C excursion occurs immediately before EOT Step 1 and may be a globally representative signal. An ~2 °C cooling of shallow shelf seawater is evident from benthic foraminiferal Mg/Ca across Step 1. This cooling signal is both sufficient to account fully for the δ18O increase in our data and is of similar amplitude to that documented in published records for shallow shelf and upper water column open ocean settings, which suggests no obvious polar amplification of this cooling signal. Our results strengthen the evidence base for attributing EOT Step 1 to global cooling with little contribution from ice volume growth and contradict the mechanism suggested to explain the inferred northward migration of the intertropical convergence zone in the contemporaneous equatorial Pacific Ocean. ABSTRACT: The mean maximum monthly temperature data were recorded at 112 stations in Australia. The data (1990–2015) were downloaded from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) website. Missing values were imputed using regression models based on information from the nearest stations, as well as the time periods. The data were deseasonalized to remove seasonal variations and then cluster analysis techniques were used to group the stations into six clusters. For each cluster, locally weighted scatter‐plot smoothing (LOESS) and double exponential smoothing (DES) were used to analyse temperature changes and patterns. The results showed that LOESS produced better fits as well as smoother curves compared with the DES. The trends in temperature were increasing in all clusters, whereas the patterns showed periodicity of the temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seed germination is vital for persistence in species that rely on seeds for post-disturbance regeneration. It is a high-risk phase and vulnerable to environmental parameters. Here, I assessed temperature sensitivity for germination in Banksia L.f. (Proteaceae) from south-western Australia, screening all 38 endemic obligate seeder species. A bi-directional temperature gradient plate with 49 temperature combinations (constant and fluctuating) between 5 and 40°C was used to profile germination temperature requirements and identify upper and lower temperature thresholds for germination. Using these data the impact of increasing temperatures on germination in these species was modelled under high and low greenhouse gas scenarios for 2050 and 2070. The results suggest that many Banksia species from the region have wide physiological tolerance for high germination temperatures, although a number of common, but geographically restricted species, such as B. praemorsa, B. oreophila and B. quercifolia, have more narrow temperature windows for germination than at least one of the rarer species (B. verticillata). Only B. dryandroides is expected to decline in germination in the future; however, the optimal germination timing for many species is predicted to occur later under climate warming. In conjunction with declining rainfall, this germination delay will place seedlings closer to the summer dry in this seasonal Mediterranean-climate ecosystem and thus they will be more vulnerable to desiccation. This study presents a greenhouse gas (GHG) life cycle assessment of 1 tonne of wheat transported to port in south-western Australia, including emissions from prefarm, onfarm and postfarm stages. The prefarm stage included GHG emissions from agricultural machinery, fertiliser and pesticide production. The onfarm stage included GHG emissions from diesel use, liming and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from N fertiliser applications. The postfarm stage included grain storage and transportation to the port. GHG emissions decreased from 487 to 304 kg carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents when we used regional-specific data for N2O emissions instead of the IPCC default value for the application of synthetic N fertilisers to land (1.0%). Fertiliser production in the prefarm stage contributed significantly (35%) to GHG, followed by onfarm CO2 emissions (27%) and emissions from transportation of inputs and wheat (12%). N2O emissions from paddock represented 9% of the total GHGs emitted. We recommend utilising regionally specific data for soil N2O emissions, rather than international default values, when assessing GHG for agricultural production systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extratropical and tropical transient storm tracks are investigated from the perspective of feature tracking in the ECHAM5 coupled climate model for the current and a future climate scenario. The atmosphere-only part of the model, forced by observed boundary conditions, produces results that agree well with analyses from the 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40), including the distribution of storms as a function of maximum intensity. This provides the authors with confidence in the use of the model for the climate change experiments. The statistical distribution of storm intensities is virtually preserved under climate change using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) A1B scenario until the end of this century. There are no indications in this study of more intense storms in the future climate, either in the Tropics or extratropics, but rather a minor reduction in the number of weaker storms. However, significant changes occur on a regional basis in the location and intensity of storm tracks. There is a clear poleward shift in the Southern Hemisphere with consequences of reduced precipitation for several areas, including southern Australia. Changes in the Northern Hemisphere are less distinct, but there are also indications of a poleward shift, a weakening of the Mediterranean storm track, and a strengthening of the storm track north of the British Isles. The tropical storm tracks undergo considerable changes including a weakening in the Atlantic sector and a strengthening and equatorward shift in the eastern Pacific. It is suggested that some of the changes, in particular the tropical ones, are due to an SST warming maximum in the eastern Pacific. The shift in the extratropical storm tracks is shown to be associated with changes in the zonal SST gradient in particular for the Southern Hemisphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the 2001 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Third Assessment Report numerous studies of processes and species associated with regional temperature change were listed for the Northern Hemisphere (107 in North America, 458 in Europe, and 14 in Asia), but only a handful of studies for the Southern Hemisphere and, sadly, none for Australia were included. This article looks at the progress that Australia has made in addressing these knowledge gaps during the last three years. The article highlights the need for a national approach to the study of the associations between climate change and natural systems and suggests ways in which this could be achieved. A ground surface temperature history for the last 500 years was created from the inversion of geophysical temperature logs in four deep ( > 1400&ThickSpace;m) boreholes on the Blackwood Plateau in southwestern Australia. Modelled temperature changes show close agreement with ground surface temperature histories from elsewhere in the world for this period and indicate that the Blackwood Plateau has experienced a 0.4 K increase in mean temperature between the beginning of the sixteenth century and the 1980s, with more than half of the increase having taken place after 1900. The modelling indicates that the highest temperatures in the region for the last 500 years were recorded during the twentieth century, and that the current rate of temperature change of more than 0.5° K per century is higher than at any other time during this time period. The tropical bloom-forming cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Woloszynska) Seenaya et Subba Raju is causing increasing concern because of its potential toxicity and invasive behavior at mid-latitudes. This species has recently been identified in several temperate areas and was first reported in France in 1994, but the mechanisms underlying this acclimation process remain to be elucidated. We performed a range of laboratory experiments in an attempt to identify the physiological characteristics that could account for this behavior. We investigated the three following hypotheses: 1) clones of C. raciborskii adapted to temperate climate have been selected as it advanced north, 2) C. raciborskii has high physiological tolerance that allows it to prosper in a wide range of conditions, and 3) changes inclimate (global warming) have favored the development of C. raciborskii in mid-latitudes. Ten strains of C. raciborskii from Australia n=1), Brazil (2), France (2), Germany (1), Hungary (1), Mexico (1), and Senegal (2) were cultured at different temperatures and light intensities. The in vitro growth parameters (μ and Topt) were the same for the tropical and temperate strains. All 10 strains displayed positive net growth in a wide range of temperatures (from 20 to 35°C) and light intensities (from 30 to 400 μmol photons·m−2·s−1), with maximum growth rates at around 30°C and 80 μmol photons·m−2·s−1. This suggests that the colonization of mid-latitudes by C. raciborskii may result from a combination of its ability to tolerate a rather wide range of climatic conditions and the global warming phenomenon, which provides this species with better environmental conditions for its growth.
