Background: Enlist E3™ soybean is tolerant to 2,4-D, glyphosate and ammonium-glufosinate and were developed for effective management of herbicide resistant weeds such as glyphosate Herbicides, even being selective, can cause damage to crop metabolism, affect growth and development and interfere with seed physiological quality. Objective: The aim of this research was to evaluate the physiological quality of Enlist E3™ soybean seeds submitted to herbicide application. Methods: The field trial was carried out in a randomized block design with four replications. The treatments tested were 2,4-D choline + glyphosate, 2,4-D choline, glyphosate + 2,4-D amine and ammonium-glufosinate; and control without application, sprayed at V6 soybean growth stage. After harvest, the seeds were submitted to first germination count, accelerated aging, germination speed index, shoot and root length, shoot and root dry mass and electrical conductivity tests. Results: The management of Enlist E3 soybeans with Enlist herbicides (2,4-D choline + glyphosate and 2,4-D choline) as well as glyphosate + 2,4-D amine and glufosinate did not negatively impact soybean parameters such as: vigor, germination count, accelerated aging, germination speed, aerial part and primary root length, aerial part and root dry mass and electrical conductivity. Conclusions: Those herbicides can be recommended to be used on post emergence (V6) of Enlist E3 soybean.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relative competitive ability of soybean with different development stages of hairy fleabane. Two experiments were conducted in greenhouse, in a completely randomized design. In the experiment it was tested soybean and hairy fleabane competition at different stage of development (rosette and 15 cm height) at the proportions 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100, and total plant population was 315 plant m-2. The variables evaluated were plant height, leaf area, and shoot dry matter (leaves and stems). Competitive analysis was performed by diagrams and interpreting the competitiveness index. The soybean has greater competitive ability that horseweed for both development stages. The intraspecific competition is more intense for soybean when in hairy fleabane rosette stage, and the competitive relations are equivalent between soybean and hairy fleabane of 15 cm tall. The both hairy fleabane stages were injured in the soybeans competition. RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a habilidade competitiva relativa da cultura da soja com buva de diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento. Foram realizados dois experimentos em casa de vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Os experimentos testaram a competição de soja e buva (estádio roseta e plantas com 15 cm de estatura) nas proporções de 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 e 0:100, com população equivalente a 315 plantas m-2. As variáveis avaliadas foram estatura, área foliar e matéria seca da parte aérea (folhas e caule). A análise da competitividade foi realizada por aplicação de diagramas e interpretações dos índices de competitividade. Os resultados da competição da soja com buva de diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento evidenciam que o cultivar de soja BRS Estância RR, em geral, possui mais habilidade competitiva que a buva, independentemente do estádio de desenvolvimento. A competição intraespecífica é mais intensa para a cultura quando em competição com buva em estádio de roseta, enquanto para a soja com buva de 15 cm as relações de competição se equivalem. O desenvolvimento da buva é prejudicado na competição com a soja.

A caracterização da habilidade competitiva da soja, em função da resposta diferencial dos cultivares, pode fornecer subsídios valiosos tanto para o melhoramento genético como para o manejo de plantas daninhas. Várias características da cultura podem associar-se com a competitividade; contudo, em soja, poucos estudos foram realizados com a finalidade de identificá-las. Com os objetivos de avaliar a variabilidade existente em cultivares de soja quanto à competitividade com plantas concorrentes e identificar aqueles portadores de habilidade competitiva superior, foi conduzido experimento a campo, em Cruz Alta-RS, na safra 2000/ 01. Testaram-se duas condições de competição (ausência ou presença de nabo-forrageiro durante a fase de desenvolvimento vegetativo da soja), combinadas com 11 cultivares da cultura. A presença do nabo durante os primeiros 60 dias do ciclo da soja reduziu estatura de planta, área foliar, massa da parte aérea seca, emissão e crescimento de ramos. Os cultivares de soja responderam diferentemente à interferência do nabo, indicando existir variabilidade genética para competitividade, o que permite selecionar genótipos de soja portadores de habilidade competitiva superior. De outra parte, ocorreu maior supressão do crescimento de plantas de nabo em função da presença dos cultivares de soja ‘CD 201’ e ‘Fepagro RS 10’. The characterization of soybean competitive ability, as a function of cultivar differential response, may provide valuable information for genetic crop improvement as well as weed management. Various crop characteristics may be associated with competitivity; however, in soybean, only a few studies have been carried out to identify them. A field experiment was conducted in Cruz Alta-RS during 2000/2001 to evaluate variability in soybean cultivars for competitivity against concurrent plants and to identify those holding superior competitive ability. Two competition conditions were tested (absence and presence of forage radish during the period of soybean vegetative development), combined with 11 soybean cultivars. The presence of forage radish during the first 60 days of crop development reduced soybean plant height, leaf area, shoot dry weight, and branch emission and growth. Soybean cultivars reacted differently to forage radish interference, suggesting the existence of genetic variability for competitivity, which allows for selection of soybean genotypes holding superior competitive ability. On the other hand, a greater growth suppression of forage radish plants was verified when associated with soybean cultivars ‘CD 201’ and ‘Fepagro RS 10’.

Além disso, o surgimento de novas tecnologias de soja resistente a herbicidas do grupo das imidazolinonas como a Cultivance® pode auxiliar o produtor de sementes no controle de plantas daninhas quando associadas a sistemas de manejo como “plante-aplique” e “aplique-plante”. Dessa forma, os objetivos da pesquisa foram avaliar a fitotoxicidade, os componentes da produtividade e a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de cultivares de soja contendo as tecnologias Cultivance®, tolerância a sulfonilureias e Roundup Ready®, frente ao resíduo de doses crescentes da mistura dos herbicidas imazapyr e imazapic, aplicado no manejo da cultura do arroz irrigado; avaliar a permanência do resíduo do herbicida no solo em virtude do acúmulo de massa da matéria seca da parte aérea de plantas de azevém, semeadas em sucessão com a cultura da soja; quantificar a atividade da enzima ALS em cultivares de soja resistentes ou suscetíveis ao herbicida imazapic; avaliar as alterações nos metabólitos secundários de plantas de soja contendo essas tecnologias, submetidas a mistura dos herbicidas imazapyr e imazapic nos sistemas de manejo “plante-aplique e “aplique-plante”. Para isso, foram realizados experimentos em campo, casa-de-vegetação e laboratório da Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Embrapa Clima Temperado e Embrapa Trigo, utilizando diferentes cultivares de soja submetidas ao herbicida imazapyr+imazapic. Os resultados demonstraram que a cultivar de soja contendo a tecnologia Cultivance® é resistente a mistura dos herbicidas imazapyr e imazapic aplicado no manejo do arroz irrigado, porém, as demais cultivares são suscetíveis. O resíduo do herbicida afeta a produtividade e a qualidade fisiológica da semente das cultivares estudadas. A massa da matéria seca da parte aérea do azevém, é reduzida na presença do resíduo do herbicida. O KM (concentração de piruvato) da enzima ALS das cultivares de soja são semelhantes, contudo o Vmáx (velocidade máxima da reação) da cultivar resistente é menor, comparado às demais, supondo-se que a resistência da cultivar contendo a tecnologia Cultivance® pode ser decorrente da insensibilidade da enzima ALS ao herbicida imazapic. As cultivares suscetíveis apresentam, em geral, maior teor de clorofila e sofrem maior ação das espécies reativas de oxigênio, comparadas a resistente. A elevação da dose da mistura dos herbicidas imazapyr e imazapic aumenta a ação do sistema antioxidante enzimático, por meio das enzimas superóxido dismutase, catalase e ascorbato peroxidase, independente do sistema de manejo. Soybean crop rotation with irrigated rice and sucession with ryegrass may be considered an option to weed management in flooded area, mainly for red rice. Besides that new technologies appearance of soybean herbicide resistant of imidazolinone group such as Cultivance® may help seed farmers in the weed control when associated to management systems such as “plant-apply” and “apply-plant”. Thus the reseach objectives were evaluate phytotoxicity, yield components and physiological quality of soybean seeds’ cultivars containing Cultivance®, sulfonylurea tolerant and Roundup Ready® technologies, as affected by carryover of increasing doses of mixture of herbicides imazapyr and imazapic spraying in management of irrigated rice crop; evaluate herbicide carryover in soil due ryegrass shoot dry matter, seeded in sucession with soybean crop; quantify ALS enzyme activity in soybean cultivars resistants or susceptibles to imazapic herbicide; evaluate the changes on secondary metabolism of soybean plants containing these technologies, submmited to mixture of herbicides imazapyr and imazapic in “plant-apply” and “apply-plant” management systems. Therefore experiments were performed on field, greenhouse and laboratories in the Federal University of Pelotas, Embrapa Temperate Climate and Embrapa Wheat, using differents soybean cultivars submmited to imazapyr+imazapic herbicide. The results showed that soybean cultivar containing Cultivance® technology is resistant to mixture of herbicides imazapyr and imazapic sprayed in management of irrigated rice, but the others cultivars are susceptibles. The herbicide carryover affect the crop yield and physiological quality of seed of the studied cultivars. Ryegrass shoot dry matter is affected by herbicide carryover. ALS enzyme KM (pyruvate concentration) of soybean cultivars are similar, however the Vmáx (maximum reaction speed) of resistant cultivar is minor, compared with the other cultivars, supposing that the resistance of the cultivar containing Cultivance® technology may be due insensibility ALS enzyme to imazapic herbicide. The susceptibles cultivars show, in general, more chlorophyll and suffer more action of reactives oxygen species, compared to resistant. The increasing dose of mixture of herbicides imazapyr and imazapic enhance the action of enzymatic antioxidant system, by means of superoxide dismutase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase enzymes, independent of management system.

Em resposta ao manejo adotado, tem ocorrido evolução de populações de plantas daninhas resistentes, sendo que há alguns anos, os produtores vêm observando dificuldades para controlar o azevém (Lolium multiflorum) com o herbicida glyphosate. Os objetivos da pesquisa foram: determinar C50 e MS50 do biótipo de azevém resistente, em relação ao biótipo suscetível; investigar a habilidade competitiva relativa entre biótipos resistente e suscetível de azevém e desses com a cultura da soja; e, verificar as alterações nos compostos secundários e os danos celulares em plantas de soja e dos biótipos de azevém resistente e suscetível ao glyphosate, quando em competição. Os resultados demonstraram que, para o controle do biótipo resistente, são necessárias doses superiores a 40 vezes àquela necessária para o biótipo suscetível. A cultura da soja possui competitividade equivalente ao biótipo suscetível e inferior ao biótipo resistente, enquanto os biótipos suscetível e resistente apresentaram habilidades competitivas equivalentes. Em geral, para a cultura da soja, a produção de compostos secundários, bem como os danos oxidativos aumentaram em decorrência da competição interespecífica. Os biótipos, tanto suscetível quanto resistente, não apresentaram alterações na produção de metabólitos secundários e danos oxidativos quando competindo entre si ou com a cultura da soja. Soybean (Glycine max) is the most grown oilseed worldwide, it is cultivation is depending on the usage of herbicides for the control of weeds , in a response to the handling methods applied, the evolution of resistant weed population has occurred. For the past few years the producers have observed difficulties in the control of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) with glyphosate herbicide. The goals of the research were to determine the C50 and GR50 of the subject resistant biotype, in relation to the susceptible biotype; to investigate the relative competitive ability between resistant and susceptible ryegrass biotypes and of these with soy cultures; and, to verify the changes in secondary compounds and cell damage in soy plants and of the ryegrass biotypes resistant and susceptible to glyphosate, when in competition. The results show that for control the resistant biotype demands doses superior to 40 times those demanded by the susceptible biotype. The soybean culture presents equivalent competitiveness to the susceptible ryegrass biotype and inferior to the resistant biotype, whilst the biotypes, both susceptible and resistant to glyphosate, present equivalent competitive ability. In general, for the soybean culture the production of secondary compounds, as well as the oxidative damages, were superior as a result of the interspecific competition. The biotypes, the susceptible as well as the resistant, did not display changes in the production of secondary metabolites and oxidative damage when competing between each other and with the soybean culture.

The objectives of this study were to identify the species of Digitaria occurring in agricultural areas of RS, to evaluate their susceptibility to herbicides, to compare the relative competitive ability between large crabgrass and soybeans and rice, to determine the competition periods of large crabgrass in these cultures. The species D. ciliaris occurs throughout the RS, predominantly in areas of the soybean crop in the northern half of the state, where D. bicornis also occurs. In the region of rice, the southern half of RS, and D. ciliaris, there is D. sanguinalis, while the species D. aequiglumis, D. eriostachya and D. ternata are found less frequently. Digitaria species are susceptible to clethodim, glyphosate and there are hebicide-tolerant populations to cyhalofop. The competitive ability of Digitaria is smaller than the cultivated species of rice and soybeans, when it occurs in the same proportion of plants. Still, the rice can live with the large crabgrass for a maximum period of 18 days after emergence without reduction in productivity; while soybean should remain free from large crabgrass for a period between 23 and 50 days after crop emergence. A milhã destaca-se entre as principais plantas daninhas presentes em áreas agrícolas no RS, devido à ocorrência em cultivos de sequeiro e irrigado e pelos prejuízos que causa às culturas. Os objetivos do presente estudo foram identificar as espécies de Digitaria ocorrentes em áreas agrícolas do RS, avaliar sua suscetibilidade a herbicidas, comparar a habilidade competitiva relativa de milhã com arroz irrigado e soja e determinar os períodos de competição de milhã nestas culturas. A espécie D. ciliaris ocorre em todo o RS, predominando em áreas de lavouras de soja na metade Norte do Estado, onde D. bicornis também ocorre. Na região orizícola, metade Sul do RS, além de D. ciliaris, destaca-se D. sanguinalis, enquanto as espécies D. aequiglumis, D. eriostachya e D. ternata são encontradas com menor frequência. As espécies de Digitaria são suscetíveis aos herbicidas clethodim e glyphosate, mas há populações tolerantes ao herbicida cyhalofop. A habilidade competitiva da Digitaria é menor que a das espécies cultivadas arroz irrigado e soja, quando ocorrem na mesma proporção de plantas. Ainda, a cultura do arroz irrigado pode conviver com presença de milhã até 18 dias após a emergência, sem que ocorra redução na produtividade, enquanto a soja deve permanecer livre da presença de milhã por período entre 23 e 50 dias após a emergência da cultura.
