The evaluation of landslide runout behavior plays a vital role in the risk assessment of landslides. In this study, the runout behavior of a landslide that occurred on December 10, 2019, in the Three Gorges Reservoir region, China, known as the Kamenziwan landslide, is studied with the discrete element method. A field survey is first conducted to study the geological characteristics and failure mechanism of this landslide. The survey results indicate that this landslide is possibly caused by the long-term fluctuation of the reservoir water level. Then, a three-dimensional (3-D) numerical model of this landslide is constructed on the basis of the terrain data obtained before and after the landslide occurrence. The critical input parameters to the numerical model, in terms of the contact micro-parameters among particles, are calibrated with the machine learning method and uniaxial compression tests. To depict the effectiveness of the built numerical model, the simulation results are compared with the video snapshots taken by a local resident. Finally, the runout behavior and the energy transformation of the landslide are analyzed based on the validated numerical model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a new limit equilibrium method based on analysis of landslides with multicircular slip surfaces in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, China. An important innovation of this method is that the rigid sliding mass is divided into numerous interrelated Spencer's circles sharing the same factor of stability, so that each of them possesses a real centre of rotation and an independent inclination of interslice forces. The analysis is accomplished by iterations to satisfy both force and moment equilibrium for each circle. Two real cases were then adopted to verify the effectiveness of the method in the analysis of both slope stability and the design forces on piles. Factors influencing the performance of the method were also investigated, which reveal that the concavity of the local slip surface near the slope toe has a major impact. The importance of the proximity between the actual and the fitted sliding surfaces was highlighted for ensuring accuracy of the method when extended to the real cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accurate landslide displacement prediction has great practical significance for mitigating geohazards. Traditional deterministic forecasting methods can provide only a single point value and cannot give the degree of uncertainty associated with the forecast, thereby failing to provide information on predictive confidence. This study applied interval prediction for landslide displacement. Taking the Tanjiahe landslide of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area as an example and considering the impact of seasonal variations in reservoir level and rainfall, the uncertainties associated with landslide displacement prediction were quantified into prediction intervals (PIs) by a bootstrapped least-square support vector machine (LSSVM) method (B-LSSVM). The proposed method consists of three steps: First, the LSSVM and bootstrapping were combined to estimate the true regression means of landslide displacement and the variance with respect to model misspecification uncertainties. Second, a new LSSVM model optimized by a genetic algorithm (GA) was implemented to estimate the noise variance. Finally, the point prediction was derived from the regression means, and the PIs were constructed by combining the regression mean, the model variance, and the noise variance. We applied the proposed method to predict the displacement of four GPS monitoring points of the Tanjiahe landslide, and we comprehensively compared the prediction accuracy and the quality of the constructed PIs with benchmark methods. A simulation and performance comparison showed that the proposed method is a promising technique for providing accurate and reliable prediction results for landslide displacement. The Huangtupo landslide is the volumetrically largest, most complex, and economically most significant landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region. Detailed information about the character and dynamics of this tractive landslide is available because of access provided by a unique, 908-meter in situ research tunnel, augmented by long-term data provided by an extensive monitoring system for ground water levels, rainfall, and in situ deformation. Three major rupture surfaces plus 12 interlayer sliding zones (weak layers) were recognized during tunnel excavation, which also provided access and samples that establish a complex, multistage deformation history. Data from the in situ monitoring system shows that the toe of the landslide is creeping at a steady annual rate of about 25-30 mm, but at a slower rate of about 12 mm/year near the crown. However, the monthly creep rates are variable, being highest during May-August when rainfall is heavy and reservoir levels are low. Displacement-depth curves in the HZ6 borehole inclinometer establish that the creep of Slump Mass I# is most rapid above a depth of 37 m, where a major rupture zone occurs immediately above bedrock. Engineered defense structures along the toe of Huangtupo landslide can improve its stability to some extent. In recent years, a large number of bank destruction occur in the reservoir area under the effect of water fluctuation, which may be lead to reservoir accumulative landslide geological hazards finally. The paper conducted the bank destruction forecasting study for accumulative landslides in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region, China utilizing back-propagation (BP) neural network approach. A representative scenario of Jinle landslide is then taken for analysis purposes. On the basis of the existing data sets of bank destruction cases, the BP neural network forecasting model and the corresponding programs for bank destruction are both presented, whose forecasting result is validated by two independent approaches, namely empirical method and numerical modeling method. Furthermore, the BP neural network model had obvious advantages over the convention approaches in the aspects of the fast calculation speed and high convenience. According to the bank destruction forecasting scale presented above, the corresponding revetment measures can be proposed to prevent the occurring of the bank destruction, whose effectiveness has been further validated by the actual engineering practice. The impoundment of the 660-km long reservoir behind the huge Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydropower station, increased regional seismicity and reactivated severe geohazards. Before the reservoir filling was initiated in 2003, the region had approximately two earthquakes per year with magnitudes between 3.0 and 4.9; after the full impoundment in 2008, approximately 14 earthquakes per year occurred with magnitudes between 3.0 and 5.4. In addition, hundreds of landslides were reactivated and are now in a state of intermittent creep. Many landslides exhibit step-like annual pattern of displacement in response to quasi-regular variations in seasonal rainfall and reservoir level. Additional problems include rock avalanches, impulse waves and debris flows. The seriousness of these events motivated numerous studies that resulted in 1) Better insight into the behavior and evolution mechanism of geohazards in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA); 2) Implementation of monitoring and early-warning systems of geohazards; and 3) Design and construction of preventive countermeasures including lattice anchors, stabilizing piles, rock bolts, drainage canals and tunnels, and huge revetments. This paper reviews the hydro-geologic setting of TGRA geohazards, examines their occurrence and evolution in the past few decades, offers insight learned from extensive research on TGRA geohazards, and suggests topics for future research to address the remaining challenges. The Three Gorges Reservoir area, one of the most landslide-prone areas in China, is characterized by widely distributed deep-seated landslides exhibiting creep deformation due to rainfall and reservoir fluctuation. Thresholds, which are a key component for a reliable landslide early warning system, are still lacking for the prediction of movements of deep-seated reservoir landslides with creep deformation because information about reservoir fluctuation indicators is lacking, uncertainty is ignored, and binary output is provided. The risk threshold, defined as the tolerance criteria for risks that will lead to action, is an effective measure of the degree of uncertainty. In the present study, a hybrid approach utilizing kernel density estimation, a copula function, and the value at risk is proposed for the estimation of the risk threshold for the Baishuihe Landslide, a typical deep-seated landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir area. Historical observations over approximately 15 years including rainfall, reservoir fluctuation, and landslide velocity were used to extract the risk threshold. A three-level risk threshold describing the minimum magnitudes of rainfall and reservoir fluctuation for changing the landslide movement state under three confidence levels was developed. A three-level risk response procedure, including risk responses in yellow alert, orange alert, and red alert, is proposed for risk management. Due to the landslide-prone geological conditions, many landslides have occurred in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR), most of which are slow-moving ancient landslides characterized by preexisting shear surfaces. In this study, with the purpose of making full use of reactivated residual strength to prevent and treat the slow-moving landslides, such as designing anti-slide piles, the Huangtupo landslide as a typical reactivated ancient landslide in the TGRR was selected to study the overconsolidation (OCR) effect on the reactivated residual strength of deep-seated sliding zone soil by conducting a series of laboratory ring shear tests. It was found that after a short rest of one day, the reactivated residual strength increased with the increase of OCR under a given normal effective stress, but it was lost after a small shear displacement. The overconsolidation effect on reactivated residual strength at a lower stress was more prominent than that at a higher stress. Very coarse sand with a size of 1–2 mm inside the remoulded deep-seated sliding zone soil sample exerts direct control on the reactivated residual strength, and it significantly influences the overconsolidation effect on reactivated residual strength. The results could provide a reliable scientific basis for improving the stability analysis and reinforcement measures of the slow-moving landslides in the TGRR, as well as can be applied to similar slow-moving landslides in other areas. • The reactivated residual strength increased with the increase of OCR after a short rest of one day. • The overconsolidation effect at a lower stress was more prominent than that at a higher stress. • Very coarse sand inside the soil sample significantly influences the overconsolidation effect.
