The article opens a special issue of the Historical Ethnology journal dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the outstanding scholar Nikolay Iosifovich Vorobyev, geographer, historian and Turkologist, Honored Scientist of the Tatar ASSR, Honorary Member of the USSR Geographical Society, founder of ethnographic Tatar studies and one of the leading researchers of the ethno- and cultural genesis of the Chuvash people. Professor Vorobyev is the author and editor of such fundamental works as the Fundamentals of Physical Geography of the Tatar Republic (Kazan, 1936); The Kazan Tatars: Ethnographic Study of the Material Culture of the Pre-October Period (Kazan, 1953); The Chuvashes. Ethnographic Study (Cheboksary, 1956); Tatars of the Middle Volga and Ural Regions (Moscow: Nauka, 1967), as well as other academic publications. The paper outlines important milestones in the biography, the main areas of the scientist’s research activities, starting with his student passion for the ethnic culture of the peoples of Siberia to academic maturity – fundamental research on the ethnography of the Turkic peoples of the Volga and Ural regions. The article presents vectors of his teaching work at Kazan State University, at the Kazan Eastern Pedagogical Institute (KSPI), as well as administrative and expeditionary practice within the walls of the Central Museum of the Tatar ASSR and the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Kazan branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

The paper examines the teaching activities of the famous ethnographer, geographer, researcher of the ethnography of the Tatars and other peoples of the Volga region, Nikolay Iosifovich Vorobyev, at Kazan University and the Eastern Pedagogical Institute in the 1920s – early 1930s. His role in organising special departments of these universities, where ethnography and related disciplines (anthropology, anthropogeography, ethnology, etc.) were taught, is shown. The views on ethnographic education of the Kazan teaching community, students and authorities at various levels are described. The paper shows that in the first years of the Soviet rule, ethnography was taught in large quantities at several Kazan institutes of higher education – Kazan University, North-Eastern Archaeological and Ethnographic Institute, and Eastern Pedagogical Institute. The main initiators of including ethnographic disciplines in the curriculum of institutes were employees of Kazan University, including N.I. Vorobyev. However, officials of the RSFSR People’s Commissariat for Education considered ethnography as a discipline that studies ‘backward peoples’ and ‘relicts’, and did not see it as a means of ideological education of students. Therefore, the number of hours assigned to this subject was reduced quite quickly. N.I. Vorobyev and his colleagues proposed a number of educational departments projects (geographical and museum-ethnographic sections of the Eastern Pedagogical Institute) in order to preserve ethnographic education in Kazan. As a result of their efforts, students of the Physics and Mathematics Department of Kazan University and the Eastern Department of the Eastern Pedagogical Institute studied ethnography and related subjects until its ‘defeat’ on the cusp of the 1920s and 1930s.

N.I. Vorobyev headed the TASSR Central Museum during the formation period of the new museum practices, when the right decisions came with experience and the main task was to develop a new structure of the institution. As the museum director, the young scholar dealt with a large number of administrative issues and difficulties, from budget and personnel shortage to elimination of external threats caused by the low level of security of museum collections. The acute shortage of funds was reflected in everything: the museum could not occupy all the areas allocated by the state, there were no more than three people in the staff of departments, the tasks of purchasing exhibits and planned acquisitions were barely fulfilled. However, at the same time, as part of preparation for exhibitions, ethnographic expeditions to many cantons of the republic were organised under the leadership of N. Vorobyev. During the expeditions, significant materials that document the culture and traditions of the peoples of the region, household items and crafts were collected, as well as a large number of photographs were taken. As a result of this work, the museum was able to adequately represent the Tatar Republic at large-scale All-Union exhibitions in Moscow in 1923 and 1927 and at the international exhibition in Paris in 1925. The public warmly welcomed the Tatrepublic sections at the exhibitions; upon the exhibitions closure, the objects replenished the museum funds. In conditions of limited funding, lack of space capacity and limited number of staff, under Vorobyev’s leadership, the museum laid down the functioning principles, which would serve as the basis of its work in the following decades. Combining museum work with his academic career, Nikolay Vorobyev left the museum during the period when full supervision of the state was being established over the institution. He left not just a museum, but also an academic institution where research work was constantly carried out.

The most important role in the formation of academic Tatar studies in domestic ethnology belongs to the outstanding scholar of the early-mid 20th century, Professor N.I. Vorobyev. With his works, he laid the foundations for a systematic approach to the study of the culture and life of the people, especially the reference group of the ethnic group – the Kazan Tatars. The use of data from related historical and geographical disciplines allowed him to pose and solve a number of important questions in the ethnic and ethnocultural history of the people. In his landmark monograph The Kazan Tatars (1953), special attention is given to their close root connection with the local Bulgarian civilisation – the ethnocultural prehistory of the people. The systematic approach consisted of the creation of N.I. Vorobyev’s first ethnocultural differentiation of the Volga-Ural Tatars, which was based on the cultural, everyday and linguistic differences within the ethnic group studied at that time. It was also manifested in the application of typological approaches to the classification of ethnographic material, which allowed him to present stable varieties of material culture (types) in dynamics, to outline analogues for them in other neighbouring and distant ethnic groups of Eurasia, and thereby to resolve a number of issues related to the cultural genesis of the people. The systematic approach was applied and improved in the research and scientific and organizational activities of his students and followers, including the authors of the volume “Historical and ethnographic atlas of the Tatar people”. Fundamental works of N.I. Vorobyev on the ethnography of the Volga-Ural Tatars laid the foundation for the formation of the Turkic-Tatar vector of academic ethnology in the Volga-Ural region of Russia. They are an invaluable resource for current and future generations of researchers.

The article examines the contribution of Professor N.I. Vorobyev to the scientific study of complex aspects of the ethnogenesis of the Chuvash people. The scientist is rightfully considered one of the prominent researchers of the problem of the origin of the Chuvash. Being one of the leaders and authors of the first volume of the collective monograph “The Chuvash. Ethnographic research. Part One” (1956), N.I. Vorobyev outlined in it his so-called "autochthonous theory" of the ethnogenesis of the Chuvash, as a people based on Finno-Ugric, but with the Turkic Bulgarian language. The article highlights the scientist's not always unambiguous views on the origin of the Chuvash, as set out by him in publications of 1930, 1950, 1953. It is noted that while many scientists at the beginning of scientific research adhered to the concept of the Finno-Ugric origin of the Chuvash, and subsequently took the position of N.I. Ashmarin, N.I. Vorobyev initially rather inclined to the Bulgarian theory, and only later became an autochthoniste. It is pointed out that one of the weak points in the scientist's interpretation of the issues of ethnogenesis was the ignoring of the factor of their Bulgarian-type language. For N.I. Vorobyev, the main basis for judgments about the origin of the Chuvash was the material and partly spiritual culture, which had a lot in common with the Mari. The article also points to the fact that the scientist did not pay attention to the factor of pagan religion in the ethnic history of the Chuvash. At the same time, it should be noted that in search of the origins of the Chuvash people, he quite widely attracted materials from famous archaeological sites of the Chuvash region. Special attention is paid in the article to the coverage of critical assessments of N.I. Vorobyev’s views by Chuvash historians V.F. Kakhovsky and V.D. Dimitriev.

N.I. Vorobyev made a great contribution to the comparative study of the history of settlement and traditional culture of the ethnographic groups of the Chuvash, their interethnic interaction with the contacted ethnoses. He identified three ethnographic complexes based on the features, both those that had archaic signs and newly formed ones. Regarding the history of the formation of ethnographic groups, the researcher argued that the population of the north-east of the Chuvash Volga region perceived more southern Turkic influences in their everyday life, began to differ in language and way of life from the north-western population, although they retained commonality with it in the main elements of language, culture and lifestyle. His conclusion that the main ethnographic groups of the Chuvash, as he considered the upper Viryal and lower Anatri, were finally formed during the 15th century in the northern regions of Chuvashia as a result of the rapprochement of the indigenous population of these areas with newcomers from the south, cannot be considered justified. The work of ethnographic expeditions in the Chuvash regions in the late 1940s and early 1950s, she showed that the archaic complex was most characteristic of the costume of the middle-aged Chuvash Anat enchi, although N.I. Vorobyev considered them an average or mixed ethnographic group. In general, he represented that group as part of the Anatri, who changed their way of life under the influence of borrowing from the Tatars. The author’s team, under the guidance of the scholar, developed in detail the classification of the Chuvash into groups and subgroups based on folk costume. N.I. Vorobyev for the first time identified three subgroups as part of anatri. The border zone between Anatri and anat yenchi, which was not clearly defined by its predecessors, in particular G.I. Komissarov, N.I. Vorobyev, was also not resolved. The riding costume was formed as a result of interaction with the mountain Mari people, although many features that unite it primarily with the anat Enchi costume were not replaced in it. The authors emphasise that the striking external differences that were recorded in the riding Chuvash northwestern subgroups and grassroots chuvashki hirti. They did not violate the common cultural community of the Chuvash people. It should be noted that the task of a more detailed substantiation of cultural and linguistic areas at the level of subgroups within the ethnographic groups of the Chuvash, divided into four subgroups in the upper zone and three in the middle and lower ones, unresolved by the expeditions of the late 1940s – early 1950s, remains relevant.

The article analyses expedition sketches of professional artist Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pozdeeva from the collections of the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan and the “Miraskhane” Written Heritage Center of G. Ibragimov Institute of Language, Literature and Art of the Republic of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, which were made by the master during the expeditions of 1926 and 1927 under the leadership of N. I. Vorobyev. Costume complexes of Tatars of different subethnic and ethnographic groups are analysed. Particular attention is paid to the scientific component of L. M. Pozdeeva’s work, the consistency of the sketches to written sources, museum materials and expedition photographs. The author of the article identified nine watercolours and one graphite pencil sketch, which depict the clothes of men and women of different ages. The pieces were made in the Chelny, Chistopol, Sviyazhsk, and Tetyush cantons, in settlements such as Nizhneye Bishevo, Kainly, Akbulatovo, Stary Tatarsky Adam, Molkeevo, Stary Kurbash, and Bakorchi (Bakrchi). Some images are duplicated by photographs, which became the visual accompaniment to the texts of N.I. Vorobyev’s academic publications. The sketches by L.M. Pozdeeva found by the author of the article fully correspond to the photographic images, which is evidence of the precise reproduction of what she saw during the expeditions. The artist chose different angles of the characters in national clothing, thereby creating not just an ethnographic copy, but an artistic image.

The work under review is devoted to the characteristics of the material culture of the Kazan Tatars of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. The author set himself the task to identify the main elements of the Kazan Tatars’ material culture, trace the history of its formation, and analyse its characteristic territorial and class differences. The work is based on the monograph of the same author, Material Culture of the Kazan Tatars, published in 1930. Since that time, the author has accumulated new material, critically revised previous conclusions, and essentially produced a new work (cit.: Smirnov A.P. (1954) N.I. Vorobyev. The Kazan Tatars. Tatgosizdat, Kazan, 1953. Sovetskaya etnografiya [Soviet Ethnography]. No. 3: 168–172. (In Russ.)).

The publication is a commentary and the text of the handwritten autobiography of N.I. Vorobyev. The document is introduced into scholarly discourse for the first time. The undertaken analysis of the text allowed us to identify new facts from the life and work of the researcher and to grasp their context. The document is dated March 2, 1947 and was written by the scholar during his work at Kazan State University. N.I. Vorobyev lists in detail the facts about his parents, the process of receiving an education, the beginning of his teaching and research work. He reveals the evolution of his own academic interests, from geography to ethnography, and highlights the author’s scholarly papers that are of significance from his point of view. The document mentions N.I. Vorobyev’s research work in the Far East dedicated to the study of the life of the Nanai (the Golds) and in the Mari ASSR – limnological studies of lakes. The researcher emphasises his work on methodological support of teachers. A separate chapter of the autobiography contains a description of the academic’s participation in the work of various public scholarly organisations. N.I. Vorobyev focuses on the important aspects of his life that correspond to the spirit of those times. This is the recognition of his political unconsciousness in the first years of the Soviet power, service in the Red Army as a private soldier. The autobiography of N.I. Vorobyev is a valuable, informative source. It shows not only the significance of individual milestones in his life and work for the scholar himself, but also reveals the distinctive features of the Soviet era, which formed the conditions for work for the entire academic community.

The publication is a commentary and texts of three previously unknown letters written to each other by N.I. Vorobyev and R.K. Gareeva (Urazmanova), who would later become the leading specialist in Tatar rites and holidays. The conducted analysis of the document revealed the peculiarities of scholarly communication between these individuals, the emotions of an inexperienced but science-minded young school teacher who was involved in the research work, and the influence of Marxist-Leninist ideology on the understanding of the importance of the ethnography science in the Soviet times. Gareeva’s first letter was written on January 23, 1961. In the letter, she shared her concerns about not understanding the need for ethnography. Vorobyev wrote her a detailed response in February of the same year. Nikolai Iosifovich divided the letter into sections. In the first part, when discussing the age of science and technology, he points out the spiritual needs. In his opinion, culture and art are no less important for people than material needs. When reflecting on the importance of ethnographic science, the scholar emphasises the need for a comprehensive study of the ‘development’ of the culture of different peoples, when old skills can be useful for meeting the modern needs. In the last section, he argues that a new generation of researchers is necessary to ensure the continuity of academic knowledge. The geographical education received by R.K. Gareeva, as N.I. Vorobyev is convinced, will help her look at traditional culture much more broadly. The second letter of Rufa (Raufa) Karimovna is not as worrisome as the first one. She expressed gratitude to Vorobyev for the answer and, inspired, she reports on her research plans to collect ethnographic materials on the culture of the Tatars and on preparation for entering graduate school. The revealed epistolary documents made it possible to reveal the subtle aspects of the formation and development of ethnological science in the Volga region, the importance of the individual/teacher in the professional development of researchers of the traditional culture of the peoples of the region.

The article presents with archival materials in which the celebrations of the twentieth anniversary of the Tatar literature classic, publicist, public figure Galimjan Ibragimov, held in 1928, are documented. The funds of the State Archive of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan) and the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) have a protocol and a transcript from the celebrations dedicated to this anniversary. The protocol is printed in Tatar, the transcript is presented in Russian. Due to a serious lung disease, the writer was residing in Yalta for treatment at the time. The preparation and holding of events was organised at the highest level, the anniversary date was celebrated even outside the Tatar Republic. Although G. Ibragimov was not able to attend the event personally, the anniversary was held on a large scale and was broadcast on the radio. A concert was organised and a play based on the writer’s drama New People was staged. At the end of the event, a telegram with anniversary greetings to the hero of the day was read and later sent to Yalta. Later, G. Ibragimov sent a reply telegram with words of gratitude to the editorial offices of the newspapers “Kyzyl Tatarstan” and “Eshche”. Among those invited and speaking were prominent literary and public figures and orientalists (I. Rakhmatullin, G. Nigmati, G. Linstser), birthday greetings from various addressees from Russian cities and abroad were read out. The transcript is very voluminous. As can be seen from the content, prominent figures took part in the meeting, such as N. Tyuryakulov, I. Borozdin, A.N. Maksudov, B.Kh. Mansurov, A.M. Arsharuni. The speakers’ speeches trace the significant role of G. Ibragimov in the public life of the Tatar people, as a literary scholar, researcher and public figure. The article provides quotes from archival documents in the original language and facts concerning the writer’s creative anniversary from the periodical press of the first half of the 20th century.

The article is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Doctor of Philology, Professor, Academician of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, Honoured Scholar of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Russian Federation, the member of the Union of Writers of Russia and the Presidium of the Union of Local Historians of Russia – Nail Mansurovich Valeev. It describes him as an outstanding Russian humanities scholar, literary critic, art critic, historian, local historian, cultural studies scholar, major organiser of scientific events and a public official. His unique and resonant academic work, significant and conceptual projects contribute to the prestige of our republic and country. Over the three decades of his life in the city of Elabuga, he wrote hundreds of articles and ten books about the historical and cultural heritage of Elabuga, about the fate of Elabuga merchants-benefactors. His enormous work on organising a purposeful study of the history of the city led to the recognition of Elabuga as one of the tourist-attractive cities of Russia. Regularly held international scientific conferences devoted to the study of the fate of the merchant dynasties of the city and the creative heritage of the forgotten classic of Russian literature D.I. Stakheev, attracted the attention of scholars from all over Russia and around the world, as well as the descendants of the merchant dynasties of the Stakheevs from Australia, Switzerland, Great Britain, France, etc. to the rich history of the city. Huge work was carried out by N.M. Valeev to draw the attention of the Republic of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences academics and the scholars of the Federal Research Center “Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences” to the study and preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the city of Chistopol. Academic works of N.M. Valeev about the life of Kazan art of the twentieth century, the Literary Chistopol encyclopedia, the monograph Boris Pasternak in Chistopol. To the origins of the “Doctor Zhivago” novel and other works caused a wide resonance around the country and the world, attracted the attention of specialists to the rich history of Tatarstan and Chistopol.

The article presents the editorial concept and content of the thematic issue of the Historical Ethnology journal dedicated to Russian Muslims, the Muslim population of Turkestan in the late 18th – early 20th centuries, and Islam. The papers included in the issue are united by the key subject “Islam in the changing contexts of eras: social and identification projections” and represent a wide field of research perspectives in Islamic studies. The interdisciplinary and diachronic approaches used in forming the content of the issue allowed tracing the dynamics of the state and the development of Islamic institutions, traditions, norms and practices, which undergo changes under the influence of the socio-political, ethnocultural and economic situation of different historical eras of the Russian history. The empirical perspective is aimed at studying the ethnocultural and social aspects of Islam in different regional contexts related to the specifics of the intellectual, theological, ritual, social, and everyday life of Muslim communities in Tatarstan, other regions of the Russian Federation, and Uzbekistan (Turkestan of the late 19th – early 20th centuries). A significant part of the articles is devoted to revealing the role of Islam in the Tatar community in different periods of its development: from imperial Russia, through the era of Soviet atheism, to the realities of modern times, which are characterised by unprecedented dynamics of the development of communication technologies. The transformation of the ritual sphere of Muslims, the format of religious practices, new online communities, and the activities of spiritual leaders in the Tatar-language media and in the blogosphere largely determine the attitude of the population, particularly young people, to Islam. A number of works in the issue trace the influence of migration processes on the development of Islam and Muslim communities in historically non-traditional social and geographical contexts. Comparison of historical research with a wide range of factual materials, documents and evidence of the past – with modern ethnological and sociological research allows us to form a multidimensional and dynamic vision of the situation in Islam and Muslim communities, taking into account their historical background in Russia and Central Asia.

The author of the article explores methodological approaches to the study of Nizhny Novgorod Muslim Tatars, which found application in the works of predecessors or those that are still awaiting testing. In this case, a microsection of the Nizhny Novgorod sociocultural space is used. Particular attention in the article is drawn to the conceptual apparatus of describing the history of the Mishars, identifying the specific features of the Mishar subethnic group of the Tatar nation and the role of the state in creating turning points in the history of this community. The author shows that one of the research angles for studying the history of Muslims (including the Russian Tatar-Muslim world) may be believers’ place of residence, their localisation. The use of the regional dimension when writing the history of Russia’s Tatars is completely justified, if for no other reason than that specific features have historically developed in the process of development of individual subethnic groups of the Tatar people (Siberian Tatars, Crimean Tatars, etc.). Using the example of the history of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Tatars, the author proves the advantages of using such a principle as interdisciplinarity, considering it possible to apply individual elements of certain methodologies to understanding ethnicity in the optics of historical ethnology. The author draws attention to another important research problem – the significance of regional specifics, both in studying the structure and self-awareness of the autochthonous peoples of Russia in their subethnic context, and, related to this, the regional specifics of a multi-ethnic and multi-confessional state, that is the Russian Federation. The materials of the article allow us to speak about the relevance of the topic chosen by the author, since the overall ethnic picture of Russia consists of individual regional “strokes”.

The article introduces the testimonies and reflections of outstanding Muslim intellectuals of the Russian Empire on the state of the educational process at Muslim educational institutions in Russia and among the Muslim expatriate community at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries, which was inadequate to the challenges of the Modern era. The author of the article traces the history of the formation of Muslim education among the Tatar population of the Russian Empire back to the era of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgaria. An analysis of connections with various educational centers in Central and Central Asia demonstrates the specifics of the formation of an educational system common to all Muslims of the Russian civilization. The paper presents numerous sources and testimonies of Tatar Muslim intellectuals, who were trained at Tatar Islamic educational institutions of the first and second stages in late 18th – early 19th centuries. The materials allow us to examine in detail and evaluate the disadvatnages and outdated principles of teaching methods for shakirds, Muslim students. Fragments of letters, memoirs, publicistic articles in the Tatar printed media of such famous Tatar public figures as M. Bigiev, G. Kursavi, Sh. Marjani, K. Nasyri, R. Fakhretdin, S. Ayni, and G. Idrisi demonstrate the tendency, which became relevant in the Tatar society at that time, to overcome medieval dogmatism and scholasticism in youth education. The development of the scientific and technological progress and the formation of a bourgeois layer in the Tatar society actualised the value of free thinking, which directly correlated with the importance of the Tatar theological thought development: a deep study of theological subjects – the interpretation of the Koran, the tradition of Muhammad and Islamic jurisprudence. The information contained in the presented materials remains relevant today, since, on the one hand, it allows us to take into account the mistakes of the past, while, on the other hand, it can and should be used in the process of organising and content-filling the educational process at existing and future Muslim educational institutions in the Russian federation.

The focus of the article is the apocalyptic narrative about the end of the world and the approach of the Judgment Day in the “holy letters”, which were spread among rural Volga-Ural Muslims in the 1920s – 1940s. The plot is studied on the basis of published and archival sources preserved at the Eastern Department of the Joint State Political Directorate (OGPU). The apocalyptic narrative and the phenomenon of the “Muslim holy letters” have been studied in two aspects: 1) from the perspective of understanding the protest potential of the “silent majority” – ordinary believers and Ishans, unofficial religious Sufi leaders; 2) in order to study the rural Muslim community: its fears, expectations, moods, patterns of religious thinking, and the ideological framework which explained social changes. To answer these questions, we have examined the content of the “holy letters”, their distribution channels, and target groups. It is concluded that the apocalyptic narrative served more for spiritual mobilisation and adaptation rather than called for resistance, directly naming the perpetrators and sharply condemning their activities. With significant structural and substantive similarities with the “Orthodox holy letters” the magical texts of the Volga-Ural Muslims were more restrained in relation to the USSR authorities, which is probably due to Muslims’ specific attitude to power. Being typical manifestations of vernacular (“private”, “living”) religiosity, our sources demonstrate the deep rootedness of Islamic values, the religious language of describing reality in the minds of the rural population of the Soviet Union’s Muslim regions in the first half of the 20th century.

The article is devoted to the study of the social activity of the urban Tatar community of Moscow, the regional leaders of the ethno-confessional society of which took an active part in the petition movement of the first half of 1905. The objective is to identify the features of Moscow Muslim Tatars’ participation in the political life of Muslims in Russia during the years of social emancipation in the context of the socio-political situation in the country as a whole and the life of the Tatar community of Moscow. The author of the article has established four reasons for the increased political activity of Moscow Tatars. A comprehensive analysis of the Memorandum on the Needs of Muslims, which was compiled in Moscow, regarding all the issues raised in the document, allows us to state that it is imbued with liberal ideology and is aimed at achieving equality of the Islamic denomination with the Orthodox denomination, which was dominant in the Empire at the time, on a number of fundamental issues, including equality in the exercise of religious rights for Muslims at the level of Orthodox subjects – the titular people of the empire, as well as in the civil and military spheres. Compared with the practices that were in force for the time being and the existing public relations in the country, those requests were of political nature. The petition of Moscow Tatars, thanks to its publication in the periodical press, turned into a “public memorandum” that played a significant role in the political education of co-religionists, the formation and development of social and political activity of Russia’s Muslim peoples. In addition, the events related to the drafting and filing of the petition contributed to the consolidation of the Tatar elites in Moscow, allowing them to publicly declare themselves as a mature social unit in matters of protecting the religious rights of co-religionists.

The article analyses the educational activities of Tatars, the emergence and development of printing and polygraphic production in Turkestan in the late 19th – early 20th centuries. The development of printing in the languages of the local Turkic population in Turkestan is associated with the socio-cultural and religious activism of Tatars. The author analyses historical and archival documents, a number of printed publications in the Uzbek language of the specified period and traces the logistics of the formation of printing culture in this region, which was significant for the Russian Empire. The article shows the effects of the modernisation trend among Tatars in the context of the scientific and technological revolution, and its transit through the Russian society to the foreign Turkic peoples of the country. The author describes the activities of Tatar typesetters who brought Muslim fonts for printing to the given region, thereby showing how the provision of a material and technical base stimulated the development of printing for the local Turkic-speaking population. The author demonstrates the development of the printing culture of Turkestan in the late 19th – early 20th centuries through the analysis of various aspects of the activities of such Tatar figures as Shakhimardan Ibragimov, Mukhammad Khasan Chanishev, Shakhingirey Bekkulov, Abdulatif Yaushev, Ali Bektemirov, Ismail Abidov, Arif Klevleyev, Akhmad Donskoy, and Shagid Akhmadiev. Along with that, the author analyses the participation of the Tatar intelligentsia in the development of printing activities and the establishment of printing in the new socio-political conditions that emerged after the revolution of 1917 – already in the Turkestan ASSR, in particular, in the Khorezm and Bukhara People's Soviet Republics.

In the modern world, significant changes in the interpretation, perception and practices of Islam occur not only under the influence of various socio-cultural factors, but are also affected by new technologies. One of the key aspects of this change is the virtualisation process of Islam, which is associated with the growing influence of digital technologies and the Internet on spreading religious information and communication of believers. This article examines the phenomenon of the virtualisation of Islam in the context of studying the problems of the interaction between religion and the Internet. The virtualisation of Islam is a process in which digital technologies are used for disseminating religious information, as well as for education and communication among believers. Social networks, online platforms and mobile applications play an increasingly significant role in shaping the religious practices and perception of Islam. The phenomenon of online religion in the post-Soviet space still has not been fully uncovered. Russian scholars define cyber-religion as a “religious innovation”, and some include it in the list of “quasi-religions”, and still consider it not as reality, but rather as something amorphous, applied, while religious movements are successfully exploring the digital environment and using it for their purposes. In the meantime, control over these processes is being lost. Cyberspace transforms Islam in terms of both ideology and discourse. Along with anonymity and accessibility of information, that leads to an increase in the number of different branches of religion which originate and are discussed on the Internet. Researchers are trying to understand exactly what kind of transformations are happening to Islamic media, the religious identity of Muslims and their opinion leaders, as well as to online rituals and the Islamic discourse on social networks.

Religious institutions for conflict resolution are values, norms, rules and methods of resolving contradictions, which are enshrined in the religious tradition and implemented within the framework of religious associations. The main practices include negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and judging. Believers in Judaism turn to rabbinical courts for help; in Christianity, people turn to parish leaders and church institutions. The Islamic system knows reconciliation (sulh), arbitration (tahkim), and judging (qada). Distinctive features of religious methods are their flexibility, a less degree of formalisation and cost. Although in the conditions of modernisation and secularisation religion is deprived of a dominant position in the sphere of regulating social relations, with the revival of interest in religion, traditions gain newfound relevance, albeit partially, with new content. The decisions of religious mediators, arbitrators and judges have no legal force, forceful coercion is impossible, so the appeal to the faith, consciousness and universal values of the parties, theological argumentation, and the search for a mutually beneficial way out of the situation come to the fore. In Tatarstan, examples of such activities include the work of the Muslim Religious Board imams and qadis, informal intermediaries from the business community, and experts in Sharia. Not all Muslims turn to the mentioned intermediaries; the value-normative and institutional preferences of believers in the field of marriage and family relations, division of inheritance, and the choice of alternative methods of resolving disputes depend on personal preferences, gender differences and the circumstances of the situation. Nevertheless, the revival of traditions in this area can serve as a good help in preventing violations in society and establishing communication at the family, religious and other communities level.

The crisis period of the pandemic caused serious changes that affected religious institutions. One of the notable shifts in religious life over the past few years has been digitalisation and mediatisation. Young people react to new phenomena and processes in the religious domain in their own way, express different assessments and expectations. The article analyses the attitude of young people towards the role of religious organizations in the situation of the pandemic and after it, the level of trust in religious organizations and their representatives, expectations from the clergy, attitude to the processes of digitalisation and mediatisation of religious life. The paper is based on the data of a sociological survey and a number of focus groups. Religious organizations elicit a variety of assessments, from positive (mainly among young believers) to disapproving (among non-believers). Young people, particularly atheists, are critical of the open interaction of religious structures with political institutions and the interference of the church into various aspects of secular society. In part, the youth express the usual criticism of religion, which is popular nowadays. Some of the negative assessments are related to the lack of information, for example, about the real activity of religious structures and individual clergy in helping people who found themselves in a vulnerable position during the coronavirus pandemic. Numerous examples of social service in the form of spiritual, psychological and cial support of those in need from various parishes went almost unnoticed. The popularity of those pastors who use virtual space in their work testifies to young people’s poignant need of to receive information about religion. At the same time, the youth trust informal communication, which is devoid of the traditional instructive tone.

The article presents the results of studying the process of constructing new religious spaces in Tomsk in the post-Soviet period, starting from the 1990s – the period of legitimation of religion in Russia. The author’s inclusion of the desecularisation concept in the analytical apparatus of the study allowed us to examine in detail the specifics of the transition of historical Muslim communities from a secular, atheistic social formation to a religious one. The purpose of the study is to examine the process of formation of religious practices among local Muslim Tatars in the context of their construction of urban religious space. The analytical framework of the desecularisation concept implied identification of a number of factors that influence their activism in the religious revivalist movement. They include the following: updating the historical ethno-confessional heritage, privatisation of religious institutions – mosque buildings built in the pre-revolutionary period; post-Soviet religious re-socialisation with the restoration of religious norms and practices at the everyday level; the formation of an accompanying institutional environment for these practices and demands; the complex and contradictory process of restoring the institution of the clergy; ethnocultural revival with formation of online communities. Anthropological and ethnological methods used by the author of the study allowed identifying a set of objective and subjective factors that have a significant impact on the dynamics and quality of the formation of urban religious spaces by local Muslim Tatars and visiting Muslim migrants from the countries of Central Asia and the Caucasus republics. At the same time, it is shown how differentiation occurs in the religious institutional space according to the principle of “locals” – “newcomers”, which, one way or another, affects the sphere of religious worship and practices, the specifics of religious infrastructure, the situation of competitive relations between imams from the Tatar community and from number of arriving Muslim migrants. The study shows that local religious Tatar activists create unique religious spaces and practices in the Muslim community, including the media space. Urban spaces, adapted to the needs of believers, become a part of religious relations within the Tatar community. Along with this, the increasing activity of imams, immigrants from Central Asia and the Caucasus republics, who accumulate administrative and territorial resources around themselves, has been noted. This leads to the replacement of traditional Islamic actors from among local Tatars with newcomers from among migrants. The article analyses field materials, observations and in-depth interviews collected from informants in Tomsk and the Tomsk Region from late 2019 to 2024.

The article is devoted to the study of modern effects of the information field in the sphere of ritual Islamic practices in the context of the social crisis associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses on issues related to the performance of ritual practices in Islam. New regulations of state medical institutions introduced in connection with the 2020 pandemic have influenced the violation of centuries-old traditional norms and practices in the funeral culture of the Tatars. The emerging contradictions and inconsistencies stimulated the actualisation of expert knowledge on the part of Muslim spiritual leaders. In the article, the author analyses the interaction between Muslim Tatars and religious authorities on the issues of solving everyday life and religious problems that believers encountered due to extraordinary circumstances (COVID-19). The source of the study was the Tatar-language media and Internet resources. The obtained results indicate the flexibility and adaptability of the information environment – traditional print media and digital technologies to rapidly developing social turbulence. At the same time, the influence of non-standard social factors (the pandemic) in a rather conservative and strictly regulated sphere of Muslim funeral and ritual culture is shown. The second aspect of the study is related to the gradual transformation of the ideas of Muslim Tatars about the culture of grave decoration. Epigraphic expeditions conducted by the author indicate that the deepening and dissemination of religious norms among them leads to gradual rejection of the practice of using photographs of deceased relatives on monuments that developed in the Soviet times. The totality of the collected materials allows us to trace how changes in family structure and relationships affect religious practices and the perception of Islam. The processes recorded by the author reflect the dynamics of the formation of theological Islam among Muslim Tatars in modern Tatarstan.

The article examines how migration processes to the Far North regions have led to the creation of Islamic communities, Muslim infrastructure and new identities in cities in the regions of the Russian Arctic. The work is based on a number of field studies conducted by the author in 2018, 2019 and 2022 in Russian polar cities, as a result of which valuable empirical materials were obtained. It is important to emphasize that Muslim communities in the cities of the Russian Far North do not give the impression that they are a part of the global Islamic Ummah. Connections with the rest of the Muslim world are limited. This does not mean that the Islamic communities of the Far North are autonomous. As in the Soviet period, control of the state over the religious space is still powerful. The authors show that Muslim communities are gradually adapting religious practices to circumpolar conditions. For many Muslim migrants, it is extremely important to be a part of Islamic networks and communities in order to survive and adapt to new conditions. These studies indicate the plasticity of the emerging identity in the minds of the Muslims in the Arctic. What is new is that the "Northerner" factor occupies a certain place in the scale of identification features of polar Muslims. The analysis shows that integration into the large northern community is a more appropriate concept than extremism or resistance when it comes to Muslims in the Russian Arctic. This is due to the fact that Islamic identity includes a fairly wide range of socially possible practices related to adaptation to northern conditions.

W artykule podjęto próbę wskazania na dwie kategorie średniowiecznych zabytków, które przez archeologów łączone są z działaniami magicznymi. Interpretacja taka możliwa jest w dwóch przypadkach. Po pierwsze, są to rzeczy, które nie były konieczne w codziennym życiu, stąd ich rola jest trudna do określenia. Tutaj omówione zostały przedmioty uważane za amulety czy talizmany, figurki, grzechotki, specyficzne pojemniki czy maski. Inną kategorią zabytków uznawanych za powiązane z działaniami magicznymi są te, które nie różnią się wprawdzie od wykorzystywanych w codziennych zajęciach, jednak ich odnalezienie w specyficznych układach stratyfikacyjnych wskazuje na użycie ich w celach magicznych, najczęściej apotropaicznych. Tutaj na szczególną uwagę zasługują przedmioty uznane za ofiary zakładzinowe oraz przedmioty pochodzenia naturalnego, takie jak belemnity, czy kamienne i krzemienne narzędzia pochodzące z wcześniejszych epok, które były przechowywane w domach lub umieszczane w ścianach czy pod podłogą budynków. Przedmioty takie były określane mianem „kamieni piorunowych” (łac. ceraunie).

Tekst jest analizą zjawiska fascynacji ludowością i folklorem w okresie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego w Polsce. Przywołane przykłady dotyczą kontekstu inspiracji twórców sztuk wizualnych, w szczególności związanych z warszawskim stowarzyszeniem artystycznym Pro Arte, takich jak: Stanisław Masłowski (1853–1926), Henryk Piątkowski (1853–1923), Stefan Popowski (1870–1937), Józef Rapacki (1871–1929), Stanisław Straszkiewicz (1870–1925), Czesław Tański (1862–1942), Władysław Wankie (1860–1925), Marian Wawrzeniecki (1863–1943), Henryk Weyssenhoff (1859–1922), Teodor Ziomek (1874–1937). Grupa funkcjonowała w latach 1922–1932 w środowisku zbliżonym do Towarzystwa Zachęty Sztuk Pięknych. W szczególności poruszone zostaną dwa wątki przywiązania do ziemi ojczystej (koncepcja telluryzmu), czego wyrazem jest malarstwo pejzażowe członków grupy oraz zainteresowanie stylizowanym rodzimym folklorem.

Tytuł filmu Adama Sikory odsyła do jednego z najważniejszych świąt katolickich. Lipiny (Śląsk, nieopodal Katowic), gdzie został nakręcony, słyną z barwnej i spektakularnej procesji, która odbywa się w Boże Ciało. Jednak film koncentruje się raczej na idiomie życia codziennego, życiu w miejscu, gdzie na skutek transformacji przemysłowej wiele rodzin i osób dotknęła skrajna bieda. Autor zauważa, że film Sikory jest bliski dokumentowi etnograficznemu: pokazuje biedę, ale nie egzotyzuje. Pokazuje trudną rzeczywistość, ale jednocześnie sprawczość, sposoby „radzenia sobie” i solidarność w trudnej sytuacji. Siłą filmu jest nie tylko nacisk na „znaczenia” („opis gęsty”), ale również na – ignorowany często przez antropologów – „opis rzadki”: to, co można by też za Eelco Runią i Hansem Ulrichem Gumbrechtem nazwać „obecnością”. Dzięki ukazaniu mise-en-scène w filmie pojawia się wielu „pasażerów na gapę” – wyrażenie Runii, który postuluje większą metonimiczność opisów. W swoim wywodzie na temat filmu Sikory autor polemizuje z twierdzeniem Jill Godmilow postulującej zerwanie z tradycyjnym dokumentem (Kill the Documentary as We Know It).

The paper attempts to answer the question about the conditions for the implementation of regionalist ideas within the Jewish community across Polish territories, especially in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The author identifies internal variations within this community, delineating diverse stances towards local character and varied circumstances surrounding the practice of regionalist endeavours. The text presents statements (declarations) made by Diaspora representatives, testifying to their attachment to the land (place) of their birth, as well as activities that can be regarded as an emanation of such a relationship. Furthermore, the profiles of several enthusiasts with Jewish roots, pursuing their regional interests in various places in the Republic of Poland and at different moments in its history, are presented. The categories of nostalgia, sentiment, establishing roots, and the concept of a “little homeland” are also highlighted.

Niniejszy tekst przedstawia fenomen tzw. góralskiej kuchni w perspektywie przemian, jakich doświadczała tradycyjna kultura Podhala od drugiej połowy XIX w. po czasy współczesne. W części pierwszej prezentuje podstawowe składniki i dania prostej i bardzo ubogiej kuchni pastersko-chłopskiej z okresu odkrywania Podhala i zawiązywania się mitu góralszczyzny. W dalszej części analizuje procesy, jakie zadecydowały o jakościowej przemianie góralskiego gotowania pod Tatrami, które, choć z pozycji klasycznego etnografa pozostaje w luźnym związku z tradycyjną kuchnią, to dla odwiedzających Podhale turystów, a także samych mieszkańców, staje się ważnym wyznacznikiem lokalnego kolorytu i góralskiej tożsamości.

Od 30 lat publikuję prace z zakresu antropologii i historii ciała. Dotyczą one kulturowej anatomii, fizjologii, psychologii i etnosemiotyki. Niektórym artykułom nadawałem podtytuł: „Fragment semiotyki antropologii popularnej w Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej czasów nowożytnych i współczesnych”. Niniejszy artykuł jest kolejną częścią wskazanych prac.

Artykuł omawia pojęcie liminalności, które w rozumieniu autorki przez ostatnie sto lat dokonało migracji z nauki o ludowości, jaką pierwotnie była folklorystyka, do etnologii, antropologii kultury, performatyki, a także krytyki artystycznej. Ta wędrówka rozpoczęła się w 1909 r. od pierwszego wydania książki Arnolda van Gennepa Obrzędy przejścia. Do pojęcia osadzonego w badaniach kultury ludowej powrócił w 2. połowie XX w. Victor Turner, dokonując jego redefinicji wobec nowych zjawisk kulturowych. Termin tak uwspółcześniony został następnie zawłaszczony przez dynamicznie rozwijaną w nowym millenium performatykę. Proces ten opisał Jon McKenzie. Natomiast artyści i badacze kultury w ostatnim okresie posługiwali się terminem w różny sposób: od rozumienia go w kategoriach „progu” (Maria Stangret-Kantor), do słowa wytrychu w kontekście kryzysów, przemian w sztuce, które dostrzegła krytyka artystyczna w końcu XX w. (Stuart Morgan). Konkluzja artykułu sugeruje, że pojęcie liminalności nadal będzie migrować w kierunku redefinicji wobec nowych metodologii i zjawisk zachodzących w nauce i sztuce.

W artykule omawiam wybrane przykłady z historii użycia obrazów w praktyce etnograficznej i w antropologicznym dyskursie. Skupiam się na nieoczywistej, wieloznacznej naturze obrazu, którego wytwarzanie można uznać za formę uczestnictwa w kulturze i konkretnej etnograficznej sytuacji. W sposób szczególny skupiam się na obrazowaniu i wykonywaniu fotografii w kontekście kolonialnym w Afryce, przywołując między innymi działalność Kazimierza Zagórskiego. Omawiam również przykłady twórczości wizualnej Edwarda S. Curtisa i Roberta Flaherty’ego w Ameryce Północnej. Historia wizualności etnograficznej dobrze oddaje zmieniające się paradygmaty antropologii. Dziś oglądane obrazy, będące wynikiem etnograficznych praktyk wizualnych doby kolonialnej, podkreślają kreacyjną oraz niestabilną naturę obrazu.

Walter Burley, angielski filozof działający w pierwszej połowie XIV w., był płodnym autorem zainteresowanym logiką, filozofią przyrody oraz filozofią praktyczną (etyką i polityką). Jego komentarze do drobnych traktatów Arystotelesa z zakresu psychologii i fizjologii, znanych w średniowieczu pod wspólną nazwą Parva naturalia, zajmują się głównie zagadnieniami leżącymi na pograniczu tych dyscyplin i obejmują także problemy dotyczące związanych z nimi dyscyplin praktycznych: medycyny i etyki, które korzystają (także i dzisiaj) z teoretycznej refleksji przyrodniczej. Choć w komentarzach do Parva naturalia Burley raczej rzadko przedstawia tezy o charakterze normatywnym, można w nich odnaleźć i przeanalizować fragmenty zawierające rozmaite wskazówki dotyczące dobrego, to znaczy zdrowego trybu życia. Porady higieniczne Burleya wykorzystują Arystotelesowską zasadę złotego środka (aurea mediocritas), w czym podobne są do wskazówek moralnych. Niniejszy tekst jest analizą Burleyowskich wskazówek higienicznych dotyczących diety, ćwiczeń fizycznych (i wysiłku fizycznego), a także snu oraz próbą wykazania, w jaki sposób Burley korzysta w tym obszarze z zasady złotego środka.

Na terenie Kujaw w miejscowościach Janiszewo, gm. Lubraniec, oraz Stawiec, gm. Lubanie, przeprowadzono archeologiczne badania wykopaliskowe dworów, po których nie pozostał żaden relikt na powierzchni ziemi. Najprawdopodobniej w XVIII w. oba popadły w ruinę, a miejsca ich lokalizacji stały się gruntami ornymi, uprawianymi do dzisiaj. Z zabudowań fazy nowożytnej pochodzą znaleziska dwóch ceramicznych dzbanów. Zabytki te stanowią wyjątkowy przykład dawnego rzemiosła ze względu na motywy zdobnicze, jakimi pokryto powierzchnię naczyń. Dzban z Janiszewa mieści wyjątkowy „podpis” wytwórcy w postaci schematycznie namalowanego farbą angobową wyposażenia warsztatu garncarskiego. Składa się nań rysunek sponowego koła garncarskiego wraz z ustawionym nań dzbanem oraz umieszczonych powyżej, zawieszonych zapewne na ścianie, drewnianych matryc do formowania płyt kafli piecowych. Naczynie ze Stawca ozdobione zostało rytym ornamentem oraz powłoką zielonej polewy. Rysunek przedstawia trzy winne krzewy obwieszone dorodnymi gronami, wśród których znajduje się kilka małych ptaków zjadających owoce oraz dwa znacznie większe ptaki. To sowa i ptak z rodziny kurowatych (głuszec?). Dzban na wino z takim zdobieniem nie tylko miał walory estetyczne. Przedstawiona na nim narracja mogła mieć kilka znaczeń kierowanych do amatorów nalewanego trunku.

Autorki tekstu przedstawią zagadnienie, jakim jest tzw. dekolonizacja wyobraźni. Potraktowały je jako narzędzie interpretacyjne wraz z krytycznym namysłem nad tą propozycją i próbą zastosowania w kontekście kulturowym Globalnej Północy. Uwaga autorek skupiła się na wybranym przypadku, polegającym na interwencji w przestrzeni przyrodniczej za pośrednictwem sztuki ziemi. Materiału do rozważań i badań dostarczył terenowy casus, czyli Międzynarodowy Plener Form z Wikliny i Land-Artu odbywający się w Łodzi. Zapleczem metodologicznym i warsztatowym autorek jest przede wszystkim antropologia kulturowa. Włączyły też do swoich rozważań badania land-artu, środowiska oraz pejzażu; czerpały z rozważań nad antropocenem i antropopresją. Oparły się też na teorii dewzrostu, z której wyrasta kluczowy dla autorek termin, czyli dekolonizacja wyobraźni. Tym, co pogłębia wyzwanie interpretacyjne w opinii autorek, jest lokalizacja owych plenerów – miejski ogród botaniczny. Jest to układ przyrodniczy poddany ściślej kontroli człowieka. Akcje artystyczne w takim miejscu mogą się kojarzyć z kolejną antropo-ingerencją, choć ogród botaniczny jako sztucznie wytworzony jest z zasady podatny na zmiany wprowadzane przede wszystkim przez ludzi. Pomimo tego, zdaniem autorek, land-art dokonuje transformacji zastanego środowiska ogrodu w kierunku odzyskiwania i wzmacniania przez nie własnej „naturalności” i stawania się bytem per se. Dzieje się tak punktowo, w wybranych aspektach i miejscach.

W tekście podejmuję próbę namysłu nad obecnym stanem edukacji w Polsce i nad naszą (tj. nauczycieli akademickich) rolą w zaistniałej sytuacji. W związku z tym najpierw wyjaśniam, jak rozumiem, czym jest edukacja i jakie są jej zadania, a następnie szkicuję obraz polskiego szkolnictwa publicznego, konstatując jego mankamenty i ich konsekwencje. Następnie przechodzę do kwestii strategii działania, jaką w przedstawionych okolicznościach powinni przyjąć nauczyciele akademiccy. Zastanawiam się, które metody dydaktyczne współgrają: raz – z aktualnymi uwarunkowaniami edukacji, dwa – z klasyczną i z postklasycznymi teoriami poznania, wiedzy i nauczania (te drugie – jak się zdaje – przyjmuje większość z nas). Na koniec proponuję zastosowanie strategii „enklaw edukacyjnych” i charakteryzuję to przedsięwzięcie.

Artykuł stanowi próbę rozpoznania cech polskiego, lokalnego wymiaru glampingu na przykładzie Browarówki, czyli małego górskiego obiektu wypoczynkowego w Karkonoszach. Osobiste doświadczenie autorka tekstu odnosi do glampingu jako ogólnoświatowej mody kulturowej w dziedzinie turystyki i organizacji czasu wolnego w XXI w.

Przedmiotem rozważań przedstawionych w artykule jest stół rozumiany jako ważny element współtworzący przestrzeń zamieszkiwaną w różnych środowiskach kulturowych. W tradycji polskiej naznaczany różnymi znaczeniami – sakralizowany, powiązany z zachowaniami obrzędowymi, funkcjonujący jako metafora spotkania i znak gościnności. Uwikłany zarówno w praktyki codzienne, jak i celebrowanie świąt. W kulturze współczesnej traktowany zaś przede wszystkim jako mebel i typowy przedmiot wyposażenia domu, dopasowywany do określonej stylistyki wnętrza i indywidualnych gustów użytkowników. Autorka, wykorzystując wyniki własnych badań etnograficznych, inspirowanych antropologią dizajnu, prowadzonych w latach 2020–2023, stara się odpowiedzieć na pytania: jak obecnie traktowany jest stół w polskich przestrzeniach domowych, jakie przypisuje się mu znaczenia, jak jest wykorzystywany w sytuacjach zwyczajnych oraz szczególnych. Wiedza ta zaś stanowić może zespół wskazówek dla specjalistów z obszaru projektowania, ale także dokumentację sposobów zamieszkiwania praktykowanych we współczesnym polskim społeczeństwie.

Artykuł jest próbą zastosowania w pracy auto/biograficznej zasad etnografii CAP (creative analytical practices), konceptu Laurel Richardson, zakładającego zniesienie podziału między „produktem” a „procesem”, co prowadzi do wielowymiarowego angażowania twórczej percepcji. Przyjęta perspektywa odwołuje się do tradycji myślenia (i pisania) refleksywnego, za cel obierając analizę ruchomego Siebie. Artykuł dotyczy rzadkiego typu złotej zawieszki – lunuli z okresu wpływów rzymskich, pochodzącej z miejscowości Fiugajki (woj. warmińsko-mazurskie). Na marginesie jego odkrycia autor tekstu prezentuje szkic dotyczący zmieniających się atrybucji, kontekstów i znaczeń tej kategorii ozdób w starożytności i wiekach średnich.
