This study discusses the seasonal variations in surficial sediment grain size and their implications for sediment transport driven by the hydrodynamics in the East China Sea, based on grain size analysis of surficial sediments and salinity data collected from the East China Sea continental shelf during two cruises in 2011. The results show that the grain size distribution on the East China Sea continental shelf presents apparent spatial and seasonal variations. The mud area exhibits more variation than the sand area, which indicates that the sediment supply is the main factor controlling the surficial sediment grain size distribution on the East China Sea continental shelf. The grain size near the Yangtze River Estuary is relatively coarse in summer, because of the inherited characteristics from the previous winter, whereas it is much finer in autumn, due to the input of fine-grained materials during the flood period of the Yangtze River. A high fine-grained sediment concentration was found along the Zhejiang-Fujian coast in autumn when the Zhejiang-Fujian Coastal Current forms. The sediments in the northeast of the study region (the mud patch southwest of Cheju Island) are much coarser, and the fine-grained area is narrower in autumn than in summer because of seasonal variations in the Yellow Sea Coastal Current and the frequency of storms. Simultaneously, the tongue-shaped fine-grained cross shelf front located along the Zhejiang-Fujian coast occurs farther to the south in autumn than in summer. Abstract Sedimentary responses to the cross-shelf transport on the East China Sea continental shelf are ascertained based on analyses of the sediment grain size and detrital mineral components of surficial sediments. Sedimentological data show that fine-grained sediments can be transported across the continental shelf and have formed a tongue-shaped zone with an axis located near 29°N that extends from the coast to 124°40′E or beyond. The sediments in this tongue-shaped zone are rich in very fine silt and clay, as are the dominant sediment fractions discharged by the modern Yangtze River indicating a modern terrigenous source. Sediment with grain sizes 7–9 Φ is the main fraction that is transported across the continental shelf. In contrast to the regions in the same longitude, in the tongue-shaped zone the relatively low heavy mineral content, high schistose mineral content and high dolomite content and the mixture of fresh and weathered minerals show that modern Yangtze River sediment has been widely transported to this region. Meanwhile, the simultaneous existence of the fine-grained tongue and a coarse-grained area immediately south of the base of the tongue coincident with the nearshore Kuroshio branch current intrusion area indicate that the Kuroshio intrusion plays an important role in triggering the cross-shelf flows. The East China Sea continental shelf is a unique area for the study of land-sea interactions and paleoenvironmental change because it receives a large amount of terrestrial material inputs. In recent decades, human activities and global climate change have greatly affected river discharges into the sea. However, changes in the deposition process caused by these factors in the East China Sea continental shelf are unclear. We collected eight short sediment cores from the East China Sea inner shelf (ECSIS) using a box core sampler in 2012 and 2015. The grainsize, 210 Pb, and 137 Cs of these cores were analyzed in order to reconstruct the deposition history since the 1950s, and to reveal human activity and climate change influences on sediment deposition in the ECSIS. Results indicated that sediment grain size became finer after 1969, turned coarser after 1987, and then further coarser since 2003, corresponding well to the three steps of sediment load drop in the Changjiang (Yangtze) River, which are mainly caused by human activities (particularly the closure of the Three Gorges Dam). Simultaneously, the East Asian Monsoon influenced the deposition process in the ECSIS by changing the intensity of coastal currents. Mean grain size variations in the fine-grained population (divided by grain size vs. standard deviation method) coincided with that of the East Asian Winter Monsoon strength and reflected its weakness in 1987. Abrupt changes in sediment grain size over a short time scale in these sediment cores were generally caused by floods and typhoons. Spectral analyses of the sediment cores showed periodicities of 10–11 and 20–22 years, corresponding to the periodicity of solar activity (Schwabe cycle and Hale cycle). Abstract: El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) activity and the Pacific Walker Circulation are controlled by the zonal sea surface temperature (SST) gradient between the western and Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) and the corresponding barometric difference. Variations in the zonal SST gradient since the early Pleistocene have primarily been triggered by changes in the SST in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific. However, the response of the ENSO‐like long‐term state to the cooling of the EEP and its coupling role with tropical Pacific climate changes are still not well established. Here we present a high‐resolution grain‐size record spanning the last 2.36 Myr, obtained from marine core sediment located in the West Philippine Sea in order to decipher the tropical pacific climate changes and reveal its controlling mechanism. By combining our data with other long‐term climatic records from the Equatorial Pacific, we demonstrate that the cooling of SST and enhanced upwelling in the EEP resulted in the development of the Walker Circulation and increased monsoon precipitation in Luzon from 2.2 to 1.6 Myr, from 1.2 to 0.8 Myr, and since 0.2 Myr ago. The progressive cooling of the high‐latitudes in the Quaternary may be responsible for our observation here. A newly identified 100 kyr dominant period between 2.2 and 1.6 Myr in the ENSO‐like modulated Pacific climate records indicates that the ENSO‐like system may play a key role in facilitating or responding to the global climate changes. Okinawa Trough receives a large amount of fluvial sediment transported by complex oceanographic circulations, and is an ideal location for the study of paleoceanography and paleoenvironment changes. However, our knowledge of the sediment provenance and paleoenvironment evolution in the Trough during the past 17 ka is still limited. Based on high-resolution grain size, clay minerals and AMS 14 C data of the Core OKI04, we present new evidences of the provenances and paleoenvironment evolution in the middle Okinawa Trough during the last 17 ka. Our results indicate that clay-sized terrigenous sediment deposited in the middle Okinawa Trough is mainly from those rivers flowing into East China Sea and Yellow Sea (e.g., Yangtze and Yellow Rivers) and Taiwanese Rivers. Their contributions varied greatly in space and time during the past 17 ka. From 16.5 to 13.8 ka, sediment was mainly derived from the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, with little contribution from Taiwan. From 13.8 to 5.4 ka, the contributions from the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers oscillated multiple times: low in 13.8–11.6 ka, high in 11.6–7.6 ka, and back to low in 7.6–5.4 ka, whereas the pattern of Taiwanese contribution was opposite. After 5.4 ka when the sea level was high and shoreline was far away from the Okinawa Trough, the Yangtze River and eastern Taiwanese Rivers became the main provenances. The contribution from the Yellow River decreased, which is probably because Yellow River mouth was far away from the middle Trough. Sediment grain size data show that two environmentally sensitive populations are 71–7 μm and 7–0.5 μm. The variation of the populations' mean grain size and content shows that the strength of Kuroshio Current was weak during 16.5–11.6 ka, and became strong in 11.6–5.4 ka, in which Tsushima Warm Current and Yellow Sea Warm Current formed around 8.5 and 6.5 ka, respectively. The strength of Kuroshio Current decreased in 5.4 ka and increased since 3.2 ka. Based on clay mineralogical analysis, we find that the kaolinite/chlorite could be used as a new effective indicator for the East Asian Winter Monsoon's evolution in the Trough since 17 ka. This paper presents a paleoflood study to determine the flood frequency of the Changjiang River, based on core cj0702, taken from the Changjiang River subaqueous delta. We identified flood deposits by means of high-resolution grain-size variation, sensitive population, geochemical indexes and magnetic susceptibility. The core covers a time span of 120 years by Pb dating and was sampled at 1-2 cm intervals. Grain size, geochemical elements, and physical parameters were analyzed. The results indicate that the sediment of the core is mainly composed of silt and clay, as well as groups of interbedded silt, clay silt, and clay. Vertically, the grain size pattern was controlled by seasonal variations in water discharge and by the sediment input in winter from the abandoned Huanghe River delta. River flooding caused extreme values in all our measured parameters. We identified more than 20 flood events that occurred since 1887 using the physical parameter analysis method. The environmentally sensitive component of sediment grain size (14.32-96.39 μm) contribution>30%, Zr/Rb ratio>1.5, and magnetic susceptibility>16 were selected as the criteria for flood identification generally. We also found that floods that had taken place in the upstream, midstream, or downstream parts of the river were clearly identified by these indexes while the large-scale floods that covered the whole drainage area did not leave clear indications in the sediment record. Surface sediment and box core samples collected from the East China Sea (ECS) inner shelf mud area before and after Typhoon Talim (2017) were analyzed for grain size, chemical elements, and heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb). By comparing the results of the survey in May with those in September, we distinguished the possible sources of heavy metals, assessed heavy metal contamination status, and elucidated the impacts of summer typhoons on the distribution of heavy metals. The results of the enrichment factor (EF) and geoaccumulation index (I geo) showed that Cr, Ni, Zn and Pb were mainly derived from natural sources, while Cu was partly influenced by anthropogenic activities and showed minor to moderate pollution. The difference between the minimum and maximum values of heavy metals became larger after the typhoon. The distribution of heavy metals in surface sediments was positively correlated with grain sizes of 11–18 μm, while the distribution in box cores was positively correlated with grain sizes of 0.8–12 μm. Additionally, the correlation between heavy metals (except Cu in box cores) and specific grain sizes increased after the typhoon passage. The thickness of the storm layer caused by Typhoon Talim was 16 cm, and the erosion depth was 4 cm. The stations with high and low values of the enrichment factor of typhoons (EF t) were separated from each other, indicating that heavy metal pollution increased at some stations and decreased at others after Typhoon Talim. The impact of typhoons on heavy metal pollution is related to seabed erosion and deposition. Abstract: Changes in paleoenvironments over the last 17,500yr have been documented by a high-resolution clay mineralogy and grain–size records of Core KNG5 from the northern slope of the South China Sea. Our results indicate that clay minerals are mainly from the Pearl River from 17,500 to12,500calyr BP, and the South China Sea modern current system began to form since 12,500calyr BP, as a result, Taiwan turns to be the major contributor of clay minerals after 12,500calyr BP. Two grain-size populations with high variability through time were identified in the 13–28μm and 1–2.2μm grain-size intervals. The 1–2.2μm grain-size population are mainly controlled by provenance supply and current transport. The 13–28μm grain-size fraction could be controlled mainly by the sea-level change. The 1–2.2μm grain-size population record demonstrates that East Asian Summer Monsoon intensity generally follows changes in insolation and that the response is similar for a large area of China and other northern low-latitude records, implying the globality of the monsoon evolution since Holocene. The East China Sea (ECS) is susceptible to summer typhoons, which play an important role in sediment transport and reworking on the continental shelf. However, because observations during typhoon passage are difficult to carry out even at present, the influence of typhoons on sedimentary records in the ECS is not fully understood. In this study, we compared the elemental compositions and grain-size distributions of surface sediments collected before and after the passage of Typhoon Talim. Through end-member modeling algorithm (EMMA) analysis, the variations in sediment composition due to the typhoon passage were characterized, and the impacts of typhoons on sediment migration, redistribution and sedimentary records on the ECS continental shelf were elucidated. Comparison of the results revealed that after the passage of Typhoon Talim, the clay distributions were generally parallel to the coastline, the sand contents in the northeast and southeast of the study area decreased, and the sorting coefficient decreased in the inner shelf mud area and increased in the relict sand area. The three-end-member model was capable of adequately reproducing all variables, and the three end members were interpreted to be the fine-grained components of river terrigenous sediments (EM1), mixed sediments (EM2), and relict sands (EM3) according to the grain-size and chemical element composition characteristics of surface sediments. Summer typhoons can interrupt the cross-shelf transport of fine-grained sediments caused by cross-shelf penetrating fronts (CPFs) and can promote exchange between fine-grained sediments and relict sands on the ECS continental shelf. Abstract: We here reconstruct the past change of the East Asian monsoon since 20 Ma using samples from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1146 in the northern South China Sea based on a multi-proxy approach including a monomineralic quartz isolation procedure, identification of clay minerals by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and grain-size analysis of isolated terrigenous materials. Terrigenous supply to ODP Site 1146 was dominated by changes in the strength of multiple sources and transport processes. Grain-size data modeled by an end-member modeling algorithm indicate that eolian dust from the arid Asian inland and fluvial input have contributed on average 20% and 80% of total terrigenous material to ODP Site 1146, respectively. Specifically, about 40–53% of the total (quartz+feldspar) and only 6–11% of the total clay is related to eolian supply at the study site. Detailed analysis of the sedimentary environment, and clay minerals combined with previous studies shows that smectite originates mainly from Luzon, kaolinite from the Pearl River and illite and chlorite from the Pearl River, Taiwan and/or the Yangtze River. The proportion and mass accumulation rate (MAR) of the coarsest end-member EM1 (interpreted as eolian dust), ratios of (illite+chlorite)/smectite, (quartz+feldspar)% and mean grain-size of terrigenous materials at ODP Site 1146 were adopted as proxies for East Asian monsoon evolution. The consistent variation of these independent proxies since 20 Ma shows three profound shifts in the intensity of East Asian winter monsoon relative to summer monsoon, as well as aridity of the Asian continent, occurred at ∼15 Ma, ∼8 Ma and the youngest at about 3 Ma. In comparison, the summer monsoon intensified contemporaneously with the winter monsoon at 3 Ma. The phased uplift of the Himalaya–Tibetan plateau may have played a significant role in strengthening the Asian monsoon at ∼15 Ma, 8 Ma and 3 Ma. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

273 samples from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1146 in the northern South China Sea (SCS) were analyzed for grain-size distributions using grain-size class vs. standard deviation method and end-member modeling algorithm (EMMA) in order to investigate the evolution of the East Asian monsoon since about 20 Ma. 10–19 μm/1.3–2.4 μm, the ratio of two grain-size populations with the highest variability through time was used to indicate East Asian winter monsoon intensity relative to summer monsoon. The mass accumulation rate of the coarsest end member EM1 (eolian), resulting from EMMA, can be used as a proxy of winter monsoon strength and Asian inland aridity, and the ratio of EM1/(EM2+EM3) as a proxy of winter monsoon intensity relative to summer monsoon. The combined proxies show that a profound enhancement of East Asian winter monsoon strength and winter monsoon intensity relative to summer monsoon occurred at about 8 Ma, and it is possible that the summer monsoon simultaneously intensified with winter monsoon at 3 Ma. Our results are well consistent with the previous studies in loess, eolian deposion in the Pacifc, radiolarians and planktonic foraminifera in the SCS. AMS14C dating and grain-size analysis for Core DD2, located at the north of the Yangtze River-derived mud off the Zhejiang-Fujian coasts in the inner shelf of the East China Sea, provide us a high-resolution grain-size distribution curve varying with depth and time. Data in the upper mud layer of Core DD2 indicate that there are at least 9 abrupt grain-size increasing in recent 2000 years, with each corresponding very well with the low-temperature events in Chinese history, which might result from the periodical strengthening of the East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM), including the first-revealed maximum temperature lowering event at around 990 a BP. At the same time, the finer grain size section in Core DD2 agrees well with the Sui-Tang Warming Period (600–1000 a AD) defined previously by Zhu Kezhen, during which the climate had a warm, cold and warm fluctuation, with a dominated cooling period of 750–850 a AD. The Little Ice Age (LIA) can also be identified in the core. It starts around 1450 a AD and was followed by a subsequent cooling events at 1510, 1670 and 1840 a AD. Both the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) and El Niño (EN) activities are vital climate modes that regulate the Pacific hydrologic cycle. However, the Holocene interactions among the EAWM, EN activities, and tropical Pacific precipitation remain unclear due to the lack of appropriate EAWM proxies. Here, we present high-resolution grain size records from the East China Sea shelf along with a transient climate model simulation to study the Holocene EAWM evolution and compare the findings with paleo-EN precipitation-related proxies records. The millennial-scale oscillations of grain size records, which are indicative of the intensity of the EAWM-driven coastal current, reveal an anti-phase coupling between the EAWM and EN-related tropical Pacific precipitation on a millennial timescale since 5.8 ka. These results, which are consistent with simulation results, indicate that the intensified EAWM could not only reduce equatorial western Pacific precipitation by reducing the sea surface temperature but also likely change boundary conditions in the tropical Pacific (i.e., the east-west Pacific temperature gradient and westerly anomaly) to favor the formation of subsequent intensive EN activities. The enhanced EN activities, inferred by the positive tropical eastern Pacific precipitation anomalies, could subsequently suppress the EAWM through anomalous low-level anticyclones and associated southerly anomalies, thereby generating intensified tropical western Pacific (mainly tropical monsoon areas) precipitation. The late Quaternary paleoceanography and paleoenvironment of the South China Sea (SCS) have been well reconstructed over the last decade. In contrast, the provenance of the terrigenous sediments that have accumulated in the northwestern continental shelf mud area remains enigmatic. This study investigated the provenance of these sediments and the paleoenvironmental changes archived in Core X2 via the analysis of geochemical elements, grain size, and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14 C ages. Based on the upper continental crust (UCC)-normalized REE patterns and REE fractionation parameters, southwestern and western Taiwanese rivers and the Pearl River were identified as the main sources of the fine-grained sediment deposited in the northwestern shelf mud area off Hainan Island. This finding further confirms the long-distance transport (> 1000 km) of fine-grained sediment from Taiwanese rivers to the northern SCS shelf and slope. Obvious changes in the grain size and Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) record occurred at approximately 4.0 cal kyr BP and were likely caused by increased Hainan Island inputs due to sea level changes. Changing weathering intensity, sediment transport, and provenance variations over the past 22.0 ka BP have been investigated by high-resolution clay mineralogy, grain-size and stable oxygen isotopes of planktonic foraminifera records along core CG2 recovered from the continental slope of the Sunda Shelf (southern South China Sea). Our results indicated that the reworking of older sediments outcropping on the Sunda Shelf exerted a great influence on the sediment supply during the last glacial and most of the last deglacial, modulated by sea level and monsoon rainfall changes. During the last 9.0 ka BP, relative increased kaolinite and heavier δ 18 O seawater values might reflect the higher influence of the tropical Indonesian Islands sources due to the reopen of southern straits, implying the formation of modern oceanic circulation and depositional patterns. High sediment fluxes in core CG2 during Heinrich stadial 1 might be a synthetic result of the intensified monsoon rainfall originated from the southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the proximal location of the study core before the flooding of the Sunda Shelf. Fluctuations in smectite/(illite + chlorite) ratios correlated well with monsoon intensity, and periods of strong monsoon rainfall (lighter δ 18 O seawater values) were associated with an intensification of erosion of pre-existing, more weathered materials on the Sunda Shelf. Finally, we concluded that sediment composition and mineralogy in the southern South China Sea slope were controlled by varying degrees of reworking on the Sunda Shelf, as well as climatically modulated sediment supply from the Mekong River and southern tropical islands over the last 22.0 ka BP. The Quaternary East Asian summer rainfall evolution reconstructed with the Chinese speleothem δ18O records shows the consistency throughout the region of East Asia, and has long been considered equivalent to the monsoon intensity. Its variation and teleconnection with global climate were usually interpreted by the meridional shift of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). However, many other proxy records, climate simulations and meteorological observations suggest the inconsistent rainfall patterns in the different regions of East Asia on multi-timescales. Such spatial heterogeneity in Quaternary East Asian summer rainfall indicates that the hydroclimate in this region is not fully paced by the migration of the ITCZ. Here, we report a sediment record of rainfall evolution during the last 400 ka in the northern East China Sea, and this record, in combination with a transient climate model simulation, indicates an out-of-phase relationship between rainfall over middle-southeastern East Asia and northern and southwestern East Asia on the precession band, with high boreal summer insolation corresponding to the increased rainfall intensity in the northern and southwestern East Asia, however, decreased rainfall intensity in the middle East Asia. We attribute this regional heterogeneity in East Asian rainfall to the reorganization of the Hadley circulation, including shifts in the ascending branch (ITCZ) and descending branch (subtropical westerly jet), in response to changes in the hemispheric meridional temperature gradient.
