The Erd\H{o}s-Simonovits stability theorem states that for all \epsilon >0 there exists \alpha >0 such that if G is a K_{r+1}-free graph on n vertices with e(G) > ex(n,K_{r+1}) - \alpha n^2, then one can remove \epsilon n^2 edges from G to obtain an r-partite graph. F\"uredi gave a short proof that one can choose \alpha=\epsilon. A packing $k$-coloring for some integer $k$ of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a mapping $\varphi:V\to\{1,\ldots,k\}$ such that any two vertices $u, v$ of color $\varphi(u)=\varphi(v)$ are in distance at least $\varphi(u)+1$. This concept is motivated by frequency assignment problems. The \emph{packing chromatic number} of $G$ is the smallest $k$ such that there exists a packing $k$-coloring of $G$. Fiala and Golovach showed that determining the packing chromatic number for chordal graphs is \NP-complete for diameter exactly 5. While the problem is easy to solve for diameter 2, we show \NP-completeness for any diameter at least 3. Our reduction also shows that the packing chromatic number is hard to approximate within $n^{{1/2}-\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilon > 0$. In addition, we design an \FPT algorithm for interval graphs of bounded diameter. This leads us to exploring the problem of finding a partial coloring that maximizes the number of colored vertices., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

A weighting of the edges of a hypergraph is called vertex-coloring if the weighted degrees of the vertices yield a proper coloring of the graph, i.e. every edge contains at least two vertices with different weighted degrees. In this article, we show that such a weighting is possible from the weight set {1,2,…,max{5,r+1}} for all hypergraphs with maximum edge size r≥3 and not containing edges solely consisting of identical vertices. The number r+1 is best possible for this statement.

An edge-ordering of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a bijection $\phi:E\to\{1,2,\ldots,|E|\}$. Given an edge-ordering, a sequence of edges $P=e_1,e_2,\ldots,e_k$ is an increasing path if it is a path in $G$ which satisfies $\phi(e_i)

Turan's Theorem states that every graph of a certain edge density contains a complete graph $K^k$ and describes the unique extremal graphs. We give a similar Theorem for l-partite graphs. For large l, we find the minimal edge density $d^k_l$, such that every $\ell$-partite graph whose parts have pairwise edge density greater than $d^k_l$ contains a $K^k$. It turns out that $d^k_l=(k-2)/(k-1)$ for large enough l. We also describe the structure of the extremal graphs. For the case of triangles we show that $d^3_{13}=1/2$, disproving a conjecture by Bondy, Shen, Thomasse and Thomassen., Comment: 9 pages

Motivated by investigations of rainbow matchings in edge colored graphs, we introduce the notion of color-line graphs that generalizes the classical concept of line graphs in a natural way. Let $H$ be a (properly) edge-colored graph. The (proper) color-line graph $C\!L(H)$ of $H$ has edges of $H$ as vertices, and two edges of $H$ are adjacent in $C\!L(H)$ if they are incident in $H$ or have the same color. We give Krausz-type characterizations for (proper) color-line graphs, and point out that, for any fixed $k\ge 2$, recognizing if a graph is the color-line graph of some graph $H$ in which the edges are colored with at most $k$ colors is NP-complete. In contrast, we show that, for any fixed $k$, recognizing color-line graphs of properly edge colored graphs $H$ with at most $k$ colors is polynomially. Moreover, we give a good characterization for proper $2$-color line graphs that yields a linear time recognition algorithm in this case., To appear in Discrete Appl. Math

Let $G$ be a fixed graph and let ${\mathcal F}$ be a family of graphs. A subgraph $J$ of $G$ is ${\mathcal F}$-saturated if no member of ${\mathcal F}$ is a subgraph of $J$, but for any edge $e$ in $E(G)-E(J)$, some element of ${\mathcal F}$ is a subgraph of $J+e$. We let $\text{ex}({\mathcal F},G)$ and $\text{sat}({\mathcal F},G)$ denote the maximum and minimum size of an ${\mathcal F}$-saturated subgraph of $G$, respectively. If no element of ${\mathcal F}$ is a subgraph of $G$, then $\text{sat}({\mathcal F},G) = \text{ex}({\mathcal F}, G) = |E(G)|$. In this paper, for $k\ge 3$ and $n\ge 100$ we determine $\text{sat}(K_3,K_k^n)$, where $K_k^n$ is the complete balanced $k$-partite graph with partite sets of size $n$. We also give several families of constructions of $K_t$-saturated subgraphs of $K_k^n$ for $t\ge 4$. Our results and constructions provide an informative contrast to recent results on the edge-density version of $\text{ex}(K_t,K_k^n)$ from [A. Bondy, J. Shen, S. Thomass\'e, and C. The crossing number cr(G) of a graph G is the minimum number of crossings in a nondegenerate planar drawing of G. The rectilinear crossing number cr'(G) of G is the minimum number of crossings in a rectilinear nondegenerate planar drawing (with edges as straight line segments) of G. Zarankiewicz proved in 1952 that cr'(K_{n_1,n_2})\le Z(n_1,n_2):= n_1/2*(n_1-1)/2*n_2/2*(n_2-1)/2. We define an analogous bound A(n_1,n_2,n_3) for the complete tripartite graph K_{n_1,n_2,n_3}, and prove that cr'(K_{n_1,n_2,n_3})\le A({n_1,n_2,n_3}). We also show that for n large enough, 0.973 A(n,n,n) \le cr'(K_{n,n,n}) and 0.666 A(n,n,n)\le cr(K_{n,n,n}), with the tighter rectilinear lower bound established through the use of flag algebras. A complete multipartite graph is balanced if the partite sets all have the same cardinality. We study asymptotic behavior of the crossing number of the balanced complete r-partite graph. Richter and Thomassen proved in 1997 that the limit as n\to\infty of cr(K_{n,n}) over the maximum number of crossings in a drawing of K_{n,n} exists and is at most 1/4. We define z(r)=3(r^2-r)/8(r^2+r-3) and show that for a fixed r and the balanced complete r-partite graph, z(r) is an upper bound to the limit superior of the crossing number divided by the maximum number of crossings in a drawing.

A rainbow matching in an edge-colored graph is a matching whose edges have distinct colors. We address the complexity issue of the following problem, \mrbm: Given an edge-colored graph $G$, how large is the largest rainbow matching in $G$? We present several sharp contrasts in the complexity of this problem. We show, among others, that * can be approximated by a polynomial algorithm with approximation ratio $2/3-\eps$. * is APX-complete, even when restricted to properly edge-colored linear forests without a $5$-vertex path, and is solvable in %time $O(m^{3/2})$ on edge-colored $m$-edge polynomial time for edge-colored forests without a $4$-vertex path. * is APX-complete, even when restricted to properly edge-colored trees without an $8$-vertex path, and is solvable in %time $O(n^{7/2})$ on edge-colored $n$-vertex polynomial time for edge-colored trees without a $7$-vertex path. * is APX-complete, even when restricted to properly edge-colored paths. These results provide a dichotomy theorem for the complexity of the problem on forests and trees in terms of forbidding paths. The latter is somewhat surprising, since, to the best of our knowledge, no (unweighted) graph problem prior to our result is known to be NP-hard for simple paths. A stable cutset in a graph is a stable set whose deletion disconnects the graph. It was conjectured by Caro and proved by Chen and Yu that any graph with $n$ vertices and at most $2n-4$ edges contains a stable cutset. The bound is tight, as we will show that all graphs with $n$ vertices and $2n-3$ edges without stable cutset arise recursively glueing together triangles and triangular prisms along an edge or triangle. As a by-product, an algorithmic implication of our result will be pointed out.

A rainbow matching in an edge-colored graph is a matching in which all the edges have distinct colors. Wang asked if there is a function $f(\delta)$ such that a properly edge-colored graph $G$ with minimum degree $\delta$ and order at least $f(\delta)$ must have a rainbow matching of size $\delta$ . We answer this question in the affirmative; an extremal approach yields that $f(\delta) = 98\delta/23< 4.27\delta$ suffices. Furthermore, we give an $O(\delta(G)|V(G)|^2)$ -time algorithm that generates such a matching in a properly edge-colored graph of order at least $6.5\delta$ .

For a given multigraph $H$, a graph $G$ is $H$-linked if $|G|\ge |H|$ and for every injective map $\tau: V(H)\to V(G)$, we can find internally disjoint paths in $G$, such that every edge from $uv$ in $H$ corresponds to a $\tau(u)-\tau(v)$ path. To guarantee that a $G$ is $H$-linked, you need a minimum degree larger than $\frac{|G|}{2}$. This situation changes, if you know that $G$ has a certain connectivity $k$. Depending on $k$, even a minimum degree independent of $|G|$ may suffice. Let $\delta(k,H,N)$ be the minimum number such that every $k$-connected graph $G$ with $|G|=N$ and $\delta(G)\ge \delta(k,H,N)$ is $H$-linked. We study bounds for this quantity. In particular, we find bounds for all multigraphs $H$ with at most three edges and some with four edges, which are optimal up to small additive or multiplicative constants. As a consequence, we also establish a few pure connectivity bounds for graph linkages.

The visibility graph $\mathcal {V}(X)$ of a discrete point set X⊂ℝ2 has vertex set X and an edge xy for every two points x,y∈X whenever there is no other point in X on the line segment between x and y. We show that for every graph G, there is a point set X∈ℝ2, such that the subgraph of $\mathcal {V}(X\cup \mathbb {Z}^{2})$ induced by X is isomorphic to G. As a consequence, we show that there are visibility graphs of arbitrary high chromatic number with clique number 6 settling a question by Kara, Por and Wood.

A collection L = P 1 ∪ P 2 ∪ · · · ∪ P t (1 ≤ t ≤ k) of t disjoint paths, s of them being singletons with |V (L)| = k is called a (k, t, s)-linear forest. A graph G is (k, t, s)ordered if for every (k, t, s)-linear forest L in G there exists a cycle C in G that contains the paths of L in the designated order as subpaths. If the cycle is also a hamiltonian cycle, then G is said to be (k, t, s)-ordered hamiltonian. We give sharp sum of degree conditions for nonadjacent vertices that imply a graph is (k, t, s)-ordered hamiltonian.

An assignment of positive integer weights to the edges of a simple graph G is called irregular if the weighted degrees of the vertices are all different. The irregularity strength, s(G), is the maximal edge weight, minimized over all irregular assignments, and is set to infinity if no such assignment is possible. In this paper, we take an iterative approach to calculating the irregularity strength of a graph. In particular, we develop a new algorithm that determines the exact value s(T) for trees T in which every two vertices of degree not equal to two are at distance at least eight.

We show that line graphs G=L(H) with @s"2(G)>=7 contain cycles of all lengths k, 2rad(H)[email protected][email protected]?c(G). This implies that every line graph of such a graph with 2rad(H)>[email protected](H) is subpancyclic, improving a recent result of Xiong and Li. The bound on @s"2(G) is best possible.
