The effect of the amount of sp3 defects in graphene on the graphene enhanced Raman scattering (GERS) is studied using gradual fluorination of chemical vapour deposition grown graphene covering the Rhodamine 6G molecules. While upon a mild fluorination the GERS effect is preserved, the GERS enhancement disappears in case of a strong fluorination. After partial removal of the fluorine from the strongly fluorinated graphene by water vapor treatment, the GERS effect is restored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In our study, we sandwiched fullerenes C70 in between two layers of isotopically labeled graphene and studied this heterostructure by atomic force microscopy and by Raman spectroscopy. Isotope labeling was used to distinguish between the top and the bottom graphene layers in the measured Raman spectra. We analyzed the Raman maps of isotopically labeled graphene-fullerene heterostructures and described the effect of the fullerenes on graphene layers. Apart from the peak parameters obtained directly from fitting the principal Raman modes of graphene, we evaluated strain and doping in both layers employing a correlation analysis of the positions of the G and the 2D bands. Our results show that the top layer is less doped and contains less sub-micron charge inhomogeneities than the bottom layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on arrangement of iron oxide nanoparticles deposited on flat substrate, on and below graphene, respectively. We combined grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to obtain the mean size of the particles and the mean inter-particle distance. While GISAXS provides statistically relevant information averaged over large area, AFM serves to support and clarify the results of GISAXS observations by inspection of the representative area of the sample. Carbon nanomaterials with a different character of the chemical bond—graphene (sp2) and nanodiamond (sp3)—are the building bricks for a new class of all-carbon hybrid nanomaterials, where the two different carbon networks with sp3 and sp2 hybridization coexist, interacting and even transforming into one another. The extraordinary physiochemical properties defined by the unique electronic band structure of the two border nanoallotropes ensure the immense application potential and versatility of these all-carbon nanomaterials. The review summarizes the status quo of sp2 – sp3 nanomaterials, including graphene/graphene-oxide—nanodiamond composites and hybrids, graphene/graphene-oxide—diamond heterojunctions, and other sp2–sp3 nanocarbon hybrids for sensing, electronic, and other emergent applications. Novel sp2–sp3 transitional nanocarbon phases and architectures are also discussed. Furthermore, the two-way sp2 (graphene) to sp3 (diamond surface and nanodiamond) transformations at the nanoscale, essential for innovative fabrication, and stability and chemical reactivity assessment are discussed based on extensive theoretical, computational and experimental studies. Graphene oxide (GO) has been a prized material for fabricating separation membranes due to its immense potential and unique chemistry. Despite the academic focus on GO, the adoption of GO membranes in industry remains elusive. One of the challenges at hand for commercializing GO membranes lies with large-scale production techniques. Fortunately, emerging studies have acknowledged this issue, where many have aimed to deliver insights into scalable approaches showing potential to be employed in the commercial domain. The current review highlights eight physical methods for GO membrane fabrication. Based on batch-unit or continuous fabrication, we have further classified the techniques into five small-scale (vacuum filtration, pressure-assisted filtration, spin coating, dip coating, drop-casting) and three large-scale (spray coating, bar/doctor blade coating, slot die coating) approaches. The continuous nature of the large-scale approach implies that the GO membranes prepared by this method are less restricted by the equipment's dimensions but rather the availability of the material, whereas membranes yielded by small-scale methods are predominately limited by the size of the fabrication device. The current review aims to serve as an initial reference to provide a technical overview of preparing GO membranes. We further aim to shift the focus of the audience towards scalable processes and their prospect, which will facilitate the commercialization of GO membranes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anchoring various functional groups to graphene is the most versatile approach for tailoring its functional properties. To date, one must use a special tunneling microscope for attaching a molecule at a specific position on the graphene with resolution better than several hundred nanometers, however, achieving this resolution is impossible on a large scale. We demonstrate for the first time that chemical functionalization can be achieved with nanometer resolution by introducing strain with nanometer scale modulation into a graphene layer. The spatial distribution of the strain has been achieved by transferring a single-layer graphene (SLG) onto a substrate decorated by a few nm large nanoparticles (NPs). By changing the number of NPs on the substrate, the amount of locally strained SLG increases, as confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy investigations. We further carried out hydrogenation and fluorination on the SLG with increasing amount of nanoscale corrugations. Raman spectroscopy, AFM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed unambiguously that the level of functionalization increases proportionally with the number of NPs, which means an increasing number of the locally strained SLG.
