Graphene oxide (GO) membranes have been proposed for water treatment. GO can be used to prepare membranes that remove organic molecules, such as model dyes from contaminated wastewater. In practical applications, wastewater is often acidic or alkaline. The physico-chemical properties of GO are only weakly affected by pH, and this can lead to poor membrane performance for the removal of positively charged model compounds. In this work, we used pH-responsive poly (methacrylic acid) (PMAA) to prepare GO-PMAA materials through chemical crosslinking. GO-PMAA materials with different compositions were used to prepare membranes via physical intercalation. The membranes were tested for removal of five different dyes of different sizes and valency (including those that are positively charged, negatively charged, and neutral at neutral pH). We identify a membrane composition that works well for the removal of negatively charged methyl orange and Evans blue under acidic conditions (with 73.1% and 99.7% rejection, respectively) with improved water permeance compared to membranes prepared with GO alone. In addition, we evaluated the long-term stability of the nanofiltration membrane. After continuous operation for 20 h, the rejection rate of MnB by 5p-nGOM was about 85.37%, and the water permeance relatively stable, while the rejection rate of MnB by nGOM was about 26.59%, and the water permeance changed greatly. These findings indicate that GO membranes modified with pH-responsive polymers can achieve superior performance with respect to separation, water permeance, long-term operation, and pressure resistance, compared to GO membranes. • GO-PMAA composites were prepared by chemical cross-linking method. • GO-PMAA materials with different compositions were used to prepare membranes via physical intercalation. • Preparation of pH-responsive composite membranes. • The pH-responsive composite membrane exhibited good rejection of negatively charged dyes (MO and EB) under acidic conditions. Water shortages have become a major problem facing the world today. Membrane separation technology is commonly used in water treatment applications. The development of new materials for water treatment can reduce the energy required for water treatment, reduce cost, and improve efficiency. The unique structure and properties of graphene and silica make them attractive materials for preparation of nanofiltration membranes for water treatment. We have successfully prepared a graphene oxide/silica (GO/SiO2) hybrid composite materials by in situ hydrolysis, using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a silicon source in an alkaline environment. The chemistry and structure of these materials are characterized by TEM, FTIR, Raman, and XPS of GO and the GO/SiO2 composite. BET porosimetry reveals that the total pore volume of the composite is 2.84 cm3 g−1, the specific surface area is 2897 m2 g−1, and the average pore diameter is 3.97 nm. We prepared GO membranes and GO/SiO2 composite membranes by vacuum suction filtration. The morphology of the membrane was observed by FESEM and AFM. The composite membrane has a larger surface roughness (Rms = 9.39). We also tested the thermal stability by TGA, and hydrophilicity by water contact angle measurements. The water permeance of the composite membrane is up to 229.15 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, and the rejection of the rhodamine B dye molecules is as high as 99%. The GO/SiO2 hybrid composite membrane has good hydrophilicity and thermal stability, high water permeance and rejection, and can be developed as a high-performance material for water treatment. Graphene has promising potential in several fields because of its unique and brilliant properties, and graphene-based composites are studied for nanofiltration because of their chemical stability and thermal resistance. Nanometals are used for compositing with graphene and its derivatives, such as Ag, Au, TiO2, and Cu. Graphene-based/nanometal membranes have remarkable performance in water treatment, antibacterial properties, and so on. In this review, we introduce the separation mechanism and fabrication method of graphene-based/nanometal composite membranes and then summarize the recent developments. Therefore, additional applications of graphene-based/nanometal composite membranes can be expected, and this paper reviews the current research trends. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To obtain nanofiltration membranes with high-performance in desalination and water purification, membranes of graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and GO/polyacrylamide (PAM) are prepared by a vacuum filtration method. This method is conducted in aqueous solution without any organic solvents. The graphene-based membranes (GBMs) are characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The hydrophilicity of GBMs is also evaluated by contact angle measurement. The interlayer spacing of GO membrane (0.85 nm), GO/PAM membrane (0.68 nm) and rGO membrane (0.36 nm) are measured by X-ray diffraction. The performance of the GBMs is evaluated on a dead-end filtration device. The water flux and retention of rhodamine B of the membranes are 399.04 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and 85.03% (GO), 188.89 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and 95.43% (GO/PAM), 85.85 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and 97.06% (rGO), respectively. The GO/PAM membrane has the best comprehensive separation performance because of its proper interlayer spacing. Three types of graphene oxide/silver nanoparticles (GO/AgNPs) composite membranes were prepared to investigate size-effect of AgNPs on nanofiltration ability. The size of AgNPs was 8, 20, and 33 nm, which was characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The morphology and structure of GO and GO/AgNPs composite membranes were characterized by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The filtration performance of membranes were evaluated on a dead-end filtration device. When the size of AgNPs is 20 nm, the GO/AgNPs composite membrane has the highest water flux (106.1 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) and rejection of Rhodamine B (RhB) (97.73%) among three types of composite membranes. The effect of feed concentration of dye solution and the flux of common solvent was also investigated. The mechanism was discussed, which demonstrated that both interlaying spacing and defect size influence the filtration ability of membrane, which is instructive to future study. In this work, graphene oxide (GO)/ethylene glycol (EG) membranes were designed by a vacuum filtration method for molecular separation and water purification. The composite membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The interlayer spacing of GO membranes (0.825 nm) and GO/EG membranes (0.634 nm) are measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Using the vacuum filtration method, the membrane thickness can be controlled by selecting the volume of the solution from which the membrane is prepared, to achieve high water permeance and high rejection of Rhodamine B (RhB). The membrane performance was evaluated on a dead-end filtration device. The water permeance and rejection of RhB of the membranes are 103.35 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and 94.56% (GO), 58.17 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 and 97.13% (GO/EG), respectively. The permeability of GO/EG membrane is about 40 × 10−6 L m-1 h−1 bar−1. Compared with the GO membrane, the GO/EG membrane has better separation performance because of its proper interlayer spacing. In this study, the highest rejection of RhB (99.92%) is achieved. The GO/EG membranes have potential applications in the fields of molecular separation and water purification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Display omitted] • Graphene oxide/MXene composite membranes were modified by urea. • The nanochannel size of GMU membranes can be adjusted with angstrom precision. • GMU membranes exhibited high water permeance and excellent ion selectivity. • GMU membranes demonstrated good long-term stability over 30 days. Two-dimensional (2D) membranes demonstrate good performance in molecular and ion separation due to their unique layer structure. However, the sieving performance of 2D membranes is severely limited by drawbacks such as poor stability and low mass transfer rates. Here, we propose a design strategy using urea as a cross-linking agent to construct stable and regular nanochannels inside the graphene oxide/MXene (GO/MXene) composite membranes. More importantly, by changing the composition, the effective interlayer spacing of the membrane can be easily adjusted within 4.47–8.92 Å with angstrom-level precision for tunable ion sieving. The composite membrane exhibits high water permeance (79.58 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) and excellent small molecule dye rejection (>99 %). Moreover, depending on the ionic valence state, the membrane exhibits significant ion sieving. The good Cl−/SO 4 2− selectivity (11.64) makes it a promising alternative to conventional ion exchange membranes. 2-Thenoyltrifluoroacetone (Tta) and 1,10-Phenanthroline hydrate (Phen) were used as ligands for Eu 3+ ions to prepare graphene oxide (GO)/rare-earth (RE) complex hybrid luminescent materials by a new method. The as-prepared products are characterized via fluorescence microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, fluorescence spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The hybrid materials exhibit good solubility, long luminescent lifetime, high fluorescence quantum yield, good thermal and photo stability. Moreover, their fluorescence properties in sodium acetate/acetic acid buffer solution over the pH range from 3.6 to 5.4 are also studied.
