1. Is plant biomass input driving soil organic matter formation processes in grassland soil under contrasting management?

Abstract

Grassland management practices vary in stocking rates and plant removal strategies (grazing versus mowing). They influence organic matter (OM) inputs, which were postulated as main controls of soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and might therefore control SOC stabilization. The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis by investigating the impacts of grassland harvesting regimes on parameters related to soil microbial functioning and soil organic matter (SOM) formation processes. We used a thirteen-year experiment in Central France under contrasting management (unmanaged, grazing with two intensities, mowing, bare fallow) to establish a carbon input gradient based on biomass leftovers after harvest. We investigated microbial biomass, basal respiration and enzyme activities as indicators of microbial functioning, and amino sugar content and composition as indicator of persistent SOM formation and origin through necromass accumulation. Responses of these parameters to carbon input along the gradient were contrasting and in most cases unrelated. Only the microbial C/N ratio and amino sugar contents showed a linear response indicating that they are influenced by plant-derived OM input. Other parameters were most probably more influenced by root activity, presence of herbivores, and/or physicochemical changes following management activities impacting soil microbial functioning. Abstract

Central European grasslands are characterized by a wide range of different management practices in close geographical proximity. Site-specific management strategies strongly affect the biosphere-atmosphere exchange of the three greenhouse gases (GHG) carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O), and methane (CH 4 ). The evaluation of environmental impacts at site level is challenging, because most in situ measurements focus on the quantification of CO 2 exchange, while long-term N 2 O and CH 4 flux measurements at ecosystem scale remain scarce. Here, we synthesized ecosystem CO 2 , N 2 O, and CH 4 fluxes from 14 managed grassland sites, quantified by eddy covariance or chamber techniques. We found that grasslands were on average a CO 2 sink (-1,783 to -91 g CO 2  m -2  year -1 ), but a N 2 O source (18-638 g CO 2 -eq. m -2  year -1 ), and either a CH 4 sink or source (-9 to 488 g CO 2 -eq. m -2  year -1 ). The net GHG balance (NGB) of nine sites where measurements of all three GHGs were available was found between -2,761 and -58 g CO 2 -eq. m -2  year -1 , with N 2 O and CH 4 emissions offsetting concurrent CO 2 uptake by on average 21 ± 6% across sites. The only positive NGB was found for one site during a restoration year with ploughing. The predictive power of soil parameters for N 2 O and CH 4 fluxes was generally low and varied considerably within years. However, after site-specific data normalization, we identified environmental conditions that indicated enhanced GHG source/sink activity ("sweet spots") and gave a good prediction of normalized overall fluxes across sites. The application of animal slurry to grasslands increased N 2 O and CH 4 emissions. The N 2 O-N emission factor across sites was 1.8 ± 0.5%, but varied considerably at site level among the years (0.1%-8.6%). Although grassland management led to increased N 2 O and CH 4 emissions, the CO 2 sink strength was generally the most dominant component of the annual GHG budget., (© 2018 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Abstract

Grasslands have a multifunctional role in producing forage for animal production systems while providing a wide array of ecosystem services, including the regulation of biogeochemical cycles and the maintenance of biodiversity which are of utmost importance for agriculture and society as a whole. This chapter provides an overview of current knowledge on the roles of grasslands in regulating the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles and conserving biodiversity. The chapter describes the ways in which environmental roles of grasslands are driven by nutrient management, frequency and timing of utilization, type of utilization (mowing or grazing), the lifespan of the grasslands and their position and diversity in the landscape. It then explains how different grassland types are necessary to target multiple services because the services of food production, carbon storage in soils, regulation of the N cycle and biodiversity conservation are maximized at different levels of grassland intensification.

Abstract

In France, agriculture contributes to 19% of national GHG emissions, 10% of which are tied to cattle production. Livestock farming helps counter climate change by promoting soil carbon sequestration. National figures show that GHG emissions and soil carbon sequestration from cattle farming represent 39.5 million tonnes CO2 eq. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) shows a net carbon footprint of 0.5 - 0.8 kg CO2 eq/kg milk for dairy systems (down 15 - 25% between 1990 and 2010), and a net carbon footprint of 8.2 - 10.8 kg CO2 eq/kg liveweight for beef systems. Rationalizing evaluation systems and levers of action is a necessity, both on a global (system) and aggregated (national) scale, and further involves taking into consideration the economic balance of dairy and beef systems. Les Analyses du Cycle de Vie (ACV) conduites évaluent l’empreinte carbone nette des systèmes laitiers entre 0,5 et 0,8 kg de CO2 eq/kg de lait, en diminution de 15 à 25 % entre 1990 et 2010, et celle des systèmes de production de viande entre 8,2 et 10,8 kg de CO2 eq/kg de viande vive. Il est nécessaire de raisonner les évaluations et les leviers d’atténuation de façon globale et agrégée à l’échelle des systèmes mais en considérant également l’équilibre des filières lait et viande. Ainsi, des leviers d’action peuvent être identifiés à l’échelle du système pour réduire la contribution de l’élevage bovin aux émissions de GES.

13. Grassland management history affects the response of the nematode community to changes in above-ground grazing regime.

Abstract

Changes in grassland management induce disturbances that influence both soil functioning and soil fauna. This study aimed at determining the extent to which the composition of a grassland soil nematode community could be altered by a shift of grazing regime and the potential feedback that these alterations could provoke on grassland functioning. Therefore, we monitored the composition of the soil nematode community (i.e., plant-, bacterial- and fungal-feeders, omnivores and carnivores) of mesocosms that were sampled from two contrasted long-term field trials (high vs low grazing treatments) and subsequently subjected to high or no grazing for 2 years. The soil nematofauna responded faster and more strongly to the application of an intensive grazing regime on a previously extensively exploited system than the other way round. The application of an intensive grazing regime induced a significant increase in numbers of bacterial feeders and a decrease of the relative abundance of fungal-feeding nematodes. The nematofaunal community structure was determined by both the past and current grazing regimes throughout the 2 years of monitoring. Observed effects on soil microbivores seemed to reflect the 'immediate' above-ground primary production potential and to follow micro-organism dynamics. On the other hand, observed effects on root-feeding nematodes seemed to reflect the integral effect of past and current grazing regimes on plant community root biomass and quality.
