As China's demand for paper products increases, China's paper industry faces enormous pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By using material flow analysis in combination with input-output analysis, this study measured the waste paper recovery rate in a more accurate method and analyzed the impact of waste paper recycling on the carbon emissions from China's paper industry. China's waste paper recovery rate estimated in this study was close to 70% in 2017, much higher than that of 48% obtained with the traditional method. The regression results displayed a negative relationship between waste paper recovery rate and CO 2 emissions per unit of paper consumption during 2000-2017 in China. The rolling regression results further indicated that the impact of waste paper recycling was becoming stronger on reducing CO 2 emissions per unit of paper consumption in China. Since an inverted "U" shape relationship exists between waste paper recovery rate and its reduction effect on carbon emissions from the paper industry, the regression results suggested that China's waste paper recovery rate has not reached the optimal level with regard to carbon emissions from China's paper industry. Thus, although China's waste paper recovery rate has reached a relatively high level, currently waste paper recycling is still an effective method to reduce carbon emissions from China's paper industry.

China's paper industry development is rapid, but the recycling rate of China's waste paper has been low all the time. Meanwhile, material flow analysis can help determine the flow of waste paper, and life cycle assessment (LCA) is the methodological framework for quantifying greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, present study integrates these two methods into the model construction of China's waste paper recycling decision system. Present study constructs a benchmark model of China's waste paper recycling decision system in 2017, focusing on the impact of nonstandard waste paper recycling on the economic and environmental benefits of China's domestic waste paper recycling system. This model construction is followed by sensitivity analysis of the relevant parameters affecting the efficiency of the waste paper recycling system. Finally, present study forecasts the system's economic benefits and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the context of integrating and regulating nonstandard recycling vendors. The results show that the economic benefit of China's waste paper recycling in 2017 is approximately 458.3 yuan/t and that the GHG emissions are 901.1 kgCO 2 eq. The standard recovery rate and nonstandard recovery acceptance rate will both have a significant impact on the system's economic benefits and improve the GHG emissions structure. In the context of integrating nonstandard recycling enterprises and individual recycling vendors, the economic benefits will rise to 3312.5 yuan/t in 2030, while GHG emissions will rise to 942.9 kgCO 2 eq. Emission trading scheme (ETS) is one of the most important ways to mitigate carbon emissions. As the largest carbon emitter in the world, China implemented ETS policy in 2013. Whether ETS policy can boost enterprise green technological innovation (GTI) quality in China remains to be discussed after reviewing the previous studies. All 318 A-share listed enterprises of China's eight high-carbon emission industries from 2008 to 2021 are chosen to investigate the influence of the ETS policy on enterprise GTI quality by the difference-in-difference (DID) method. Furthermore, heterogeneous effects of ETS policy on the quality of enterprise GTI are analyzed from three aspects: enterprise life cycle, corporate environmental management, and industry classification. The findings indicate that China's ETS policy has a positive influence on the quality of GTI in eight high-carbon emission industries. Further heterogeneity analysis demonstrates (1) China's ETS policy has varying effects on the eight high-carbon emission industries; (2) China's ETS policy can improve GTI quality of enterprises in the maturity stage of their life cycle, but not for those in their growth stage. China is the top emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. Pulp and paper industry is one of eight the strictly regulated industries about carbon emission in China. However, estimates of carbon emissions from China's pulp and paper industry have been suffered from remarkable uncertainty. It is summarized that is aroused by the inaccuracy of factors evaluating energy consumption, and the huge gap between the calculation standards for assessing energy consumption in the production process and the actual level recorded in the factories. This paper re-evaluated the carbon emission of China's pulp and paper industry from the perspective of life cycle assessment, and applied more accurate emission factors, taking account of the actual energy consumption of the production process in factories, to estimate the actual carbon emissions in maximum. It is found that the national standards about the energy consumption quota of China's pulp and paper industry is no longer applicable, and the actual energy consumption regulated in the production process is far better than the advanced level given by the national standards. As an important policy instrument to achieve greenhouse gas emission reduction, carbon emissions trading has also promoted the green transformation of enterprises while achieving carbon reduction targets. This study uses the implementation of the Chinese carbon emissions trading pilot policy (CETPP) as a quasi-natural experiment and analyzes the impacts of the CETPP on the green transformation of enterprises with the difference-in-differences (DID) method based on a sample of 297 listed Chinese A-share high-energy-consuming enterprises. The result findings show that CETPP can significantly promote the green transformation of enterprises. The heterogeneity analysis also reveals that CETPP has differential effects on enterprises belonging to different industries, which is caused by the fact that enterprises in different industries differ significantly in their green transformation paths and modes. Moreover, CETPP has a significant facilitating effect on the green transformation of non-state-owned enterprises compared to state-owned enterprises. Finally, marketization and enterprise social responsibility are two major mechanisms for the CETPP to promote the green transformation of enterprises. Our findings reveal that policymakers should further deepen the dynamic management of carbon emission allowances and guide enterprises to actively undertake social responsibility, thus leveraging the market regulation mechanism to promote the green transformation of enterprises., (© 2023. Environmental pollution and climate change have become nontraditional global security threats. As China's economy grows, the country faces an increasing number of challenges associated with improving atmospheric quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Based on China's dynamic noncompetitive input-output tables and data on energy consumption and emissions from 1994 to 2016, a hybrid input-output model is constructed to identify high-energy-consuming sectors and to quantify the impact of industrial restructuring on the intensity of air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions from these sectors. The empirical results indicate that the impact of industrial restructuring on the intensity of air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions from high-energy-consuming sectors was nonlinear and has undergone a "promotion reduction" shift. This study also found that the impact of industrial restructuring is more significant on the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions than on the intensity of air pollutant emissions; furthermore, the reduction in greenhouse gas emission intensity achieved by industrial restructuring after 2008 began to show results. This paper estimates the influences of different industries on the carbon prices and selects the industries with high market power in the carbon market. To realize price discovery in the carbon market and improve the market efficiency, we suggest that industries with higher market power should be included in the market prior to other industries. Using the LASSO regression to analyze the data from the pilot markets of China's ETS and related industrial product outputs, we find that among all related industries, the petrochemical and chemical industries affect the carbon price the most and hence should be included in China's ETS with priority. The power generation industry, though regarded as the major entity of emission control, imposes weaker influences on the carbon price. Improving China's agricultural greenhouse gases (GHG) emission efficiency has become an important way to cope with climate change in an ecologically-and ethically responsible manner. In this paper, we use a global slacks-based inefficiency model to evaluate the agricultural greenhouse gases (GHG) emission efficiency levels in China during 2000-2015. The regional disparity of China's GHG emission efficiency is examined by using a Dagum Gini coefficient. A spatial Markov chain technique is also employed to investigate the spatial dynamic evolution of agricultural GHG emission efficiency. The results show that: (1) China's agricultural GHG emission efficiency increased steadily during the study period; a certain gap in efficiency among provinces and regions also exists. (2) Between-group disparity is the main source of the overall regional disparities in China's agricultural GHG emission efficiency. The disparities between regions are on the rise, while the disparities within regions are relatively stable. (3) China's agricultural GHG emission efficiency demonstrates significant spatial dependence. One of the industries that makes a significant contribution to the overall amount of greenhouse gas emissions around the globe is agriculture. In this regard, the use of bioenergy in the agricultural and food processing industries might benefit from the implementation of circular economy techniques. Despite the fact that just roughly 9% of the global economy is circular, there have been worldwide efforts to improve that reality. The linear economy, commonly known as the "take-make-use-dispose" model, is in sharp contrast to the circular economy, also known as "grow-make-use-restore," which seeks to influence the flow of materials and energy in order to maximize the benefits to the environment and minimize any associated costs. Garbage-to-energy, also known as WTE, is the focus of both academics and businesses as a direct result of the increasingly diminishing number of energy supplies and the ever-increasing amount of garbage. This project intends to turn trash into profit, lessen the impact waste has on the environment, and generate energy from biowaste by conceptualizing a focus on the supply chain characteristics of waste-to-energy processing. The adoption of a waste-to-energy (WTE) supply chain as a district energy system should be a viable solution toward a circular industrial economy that can solve energy consumption, waste management, and greenhouse gas emission concerns all at once. In the framework of a "circular economy," this study investigates how the management of waste-to-energy supply chains impacts the performance of businesses. The present investigation makes use of life cycle assessments, technical innovation, waste-to-energy conversion, and capacities related to circular economies. The study makes use of data obtained from an online survey that was administered between March 2021 and November 2021 to employees of 285 representative samples drawn from 457 European enterprises and firms that have accepted the concepts of the circular economy. The data is examined using a technique known as partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM for short). The findings indicate that waste-to-energy serves as a mediator between the life cycle assessment and the capabilities of the circular economy and that sustainable supply chain management, sustainable supply chain design, technological progress, and waste-to-energy all have positive effects on these metrics., (© 2023. The greenhouse gas (GHG) footprints of oriented strand boards (OSB) have been gaining growing concern. China is one of the largest manufacturers and traders of OSB in the world. However, little data are available concerning the GHG footprint of Chinese OSB production. The purpose of this study is to quantify and compare the GHG footprints of three types of OSB produced in China. Cradle-to-gate GHG footprints assessment models were built for OSB according to PAS 2050 guidelines. The results showed that the cradle-to-gate GHG footprints of OSB/2, OSB/3, and OSB/4 were 142.7 kg CO 2 e/m 3 , 173.2 kg CO 2 e/m 3 , and 374.2 kg CO 2 e/m 3 , respectively. Raw material acquisition was the largest contributor to GHG footprint for three types of OSB (52.6~57.6%), followed by the production process of OSB (25.6~27.3%) and transportation (15.3~20.1%). The consumption of wood, MDI, electricity, and the transportation of wood were main emission hotspots in Chinese OSB production. Pulp and paper industry is one of the eight critical industries for controlling carbon emissions in China. As the paper productions increase, the pulp and paper industry may fail in achieving the emission reduction target due to the rapid growth of greenhouse gas emissions. The study uses life cycle assessment to evaluate the greenhouse gas emissions of China's papermaking industry chain in order to propose emission reduction targets and find ways to achieve the emission reduction targets for China's papermaking industry. Considering the net carbon absorption of plant raw materials and the extensive paper industrial chain, this study obtained that the greenhouse gas emission of major paper types under corresponding pathways ranges from 1.96 t CO 2 eq/t paper to 6.55 t CO 2 eq/t paper. Plant carbon sink can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 14.3%–42.9% under virgin fiber-based pathways. This study found that the greenhouse gas emissions caused by terminal products of 814 papermaking enterprises counted in China were 282.23 Mt CO 2 eq in 2015, accounting for 10.23% of the total greenhouse gas emissions of manufacturing industries and construction. To achieve the emission reduction target by 2050, emissions of the pulp and paper industry in China have been investigated from the perspective of three ideal energy structures. The research findings show that the emission reduction target of Intended Nationally Determined Contribution will be achieved in 30 years if the energy structure of the pulp and paper industry is adjusted only based on the optimal 450 scenario. In terms of other energy structures, the pulp and paper industry should assume afforestation areas ranged from 5900 km2 to 223,000 km2 at least to make up for the greenhouse gas emissions beyond allowance, which accounts for 0.85%–32.16% of the existing areas of plantation forestry in China. • Statistics in this work reveal the problem of excess capacity in China's pulp and paper industry. • GHG emission of paper products in different pathways range from 1.95 to 6.52 t CO 2 eq/t paper. • Energy supply mode transition is conductive to green development of pulp and paper industry. • Pulp and paper enterprises should assume afforestation areas to achieve emission reduction targets. Treated wastewater (TWW) irrigation has been recommended as an environmentally friendly agricultural practice and has been applied in many countries for decades. The effects of wastewater irrigation on rice yield and quality, as well as on the environment, with particular focus on greenhouse gas emissions from paddy fields with municipal wastewater irrigation, have gained substantial attention. In this study, bench-scale experiments were conducted in two cultivation seasons where seedlings of Bekoaoba, a large-grain high-yield rice variety, were transplanted and irrigated with TWW without fertilization. A control experiment was performed to simulate the cultivation conditions of normal paddy fields. The study aimed to quantify the effects of TWW irrigation on rice yield and quality, in addition to CH 4 and N 2 O emissions. The highest rice yield (10.4 t ha -1 ) and protein content in brown rice (13.8%) was achieved when the soil was repeatedly subjected to bottom-to-top TWW irrigation without any synthetic fertilizer. Bottom-to-top TWW irrigation decreased CH 4 emissions by up to 95.6% when compared with tap water irrigation, whereas bottom-to-top and top-to-top TWW irrigation increased N 2 O emissions by 5 and 15 times, respectively. Bottom-to-top irrigation of TWW could be considered a promising solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions as TWW irrigation resulted in a lower combined global warming potential than tap water irrigation. Further, bottom-to-top irrigation of TWW produced less CH 4 and N 2 O than top-to-top irrigation.

It will contribute to ameliorating the national carbon trading system and further benefit the realization of China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals through in-depth study and summarize the effectiveness of carbon trading policy implementation in pilot areas. Based on the multi-phase difference-in-differences approach and synthetic control method, this paper utilizes China's provincial panel data from 2006 to 2020 to comprehensively assess the Porter effect (including the economic and green innovation effects) and carbon mitigation effect of carbon trading policy from the overall and local perspectives. Then the robustness test and mechanism analysis are carried out. The findings show that: (1) from the overall effect, the carbon trading policy brings a noticeable carbon mitigation effect and Porter effect, and the intensity of the impact keeps changing over time; (2) there is significant heterogeneity in the local effects of this policy on the eight pilot provinces and cities, with only Chongqing obtaining both the Porter effect and the carbon mitigation effect, while the rest of the regions do not yield the triple dividend of economic, environmental, and green innovation simultaneously; (3) there are much more prominent environment and green innovation effects in the developed regions, while the underdeveloped ones have better economic development and no green innovation effect; (4) the policy can bring environmental and economic dividends through energy structure optimization. However, due to the carbon rebound effect, stimulating green innovation pathways can only boost the economy while carbon emissions increase instead. The manufacture of products in the industrial sector is the principal source of carbon emissions. To slow the progression of global warming and advance low-carbon economic development, it is essential to develop methods for accurately predicting carbon emissions from industrial sources and imposing reasonable controls on those emissions. We select a support vector machine to predict industrial carbon emissions from 2021 to 2040 by comparing the predictive power of the BP (backpropagation) neural network and the support vector machine. To reduce noise in the input variables for BP neural network and support vector machine models, we use a random forest technique to filter the factors affecting industrial carbon emissions. The statistical results suggest that BP's neural network is insufficiently adaptable to small sample sizes, has a relatively high error rate, and produces inconsistent predictions of industrial carbon emissions. The support vector machine produces excellent fitting results for tiny sample data, with projected values of industrial carbon dioxide emissions that are astonishingly close to the actual values. This study measures the impact of the implementation of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) on firms' green innovation initiatives. We used 20 years of panel data from the Fortune 500 list of the US largest companies. Based on DID, a benchmark regression, the RGGI has a significant adverse effect on the green innovation of Fortune 500 companies, and we verified these findings with multiple robustness tests. As we investigate how energy-intensive industries were affected by RGGI, we found that it slowed down green innovation, but it was not statistically significant. This study provides a novel perspective on how the RGGI influences green innovation in firms and how different types of sectors respond to the policy. The findings indicate that the "weak" Porter Hypothesis has not been confirmed in the present carbon trading market (particularly the RGGI) for Fortune 500 firms in the USA. Assessing the mitigation effect on greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction of the National VI Emissions Standard bears great significance in enhanced actions on climate change in China. This research established a reference scenario and National VI scenario to evaluate whether the National VI Emissions Standard could make a contribution to synergistic emission reduction. Here are the main conclusions: carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) was the majority GHG emissions type, accounting for around 99% of GHG emissions between 2019 and 2025 for these two scenarios; implementing the National VI Emissions Standard will not mitigate total GHG emissions from 2019 to 2025, but the National VI Emissions Standard could help mitigate methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O), not CO 2 if considering the mitigation effect from the perspective of GHG type. Carbon emission trading scheme (ETS) policy is a quota-based market-motivated environmental regulation policy that by transforming environmental responsibility of enterprises into self-consciousness behavior induces green innovation behavior in enterprises and influences the level of regional green innovation. Based on panel data on green patents in 30 Chinese provinces from 2010 to 2019, the paper uses six Chinese pilot provinces for ETS as the treatment group to investigate the induced effects of Chinese ETS policy on the quantity and quality of green technology innovation using difference in difference model and analyzes the effects of Chinese ETS policy on green technology innovation in different pilot regions using a synthetic control method. The findings indicate that (1) compared with non-pilot areas, the carbon emission trading policies in pilot areas can induce green technology innovation activities. (2) In all pilot regions, ETS policies significantly promoted the quantity and quality of green technology innovation, but the quantity promotion effect was significantly better than the quality promotion effect, and the low-quality promotion effect was better than the high-quality promotion effect. (3) In terms of individual pilot region, ETS policies in Guangdong, Hubei and Tianjin significantly promoted the quantity of green technology innovation and low-quality green technology innovation, but significantly inhibited or suppressed high-quality green technology innovation in a short term. China's rapid urbanization has led to the development of integrated transport networks, which requires the transport sector to pay particular attention to the integrated transport comprehensive carrying capacity (ITCCC). Concurrently, global climate change has focused the world community's attention on greenhouse gas concentrations like CO2. This study establishes an ITCCC measurement model of urban agglomerations (UAs) and measures the comprehensive carrying capacity from four factors: socio-economic, basic resources, transport facilities, and traffic environment. In particular, this paper takes carbon emission as a critical indicator of the traffic environment when considering the impact factors of ITCCC. Based on the data of China's five major UAs, this study estimates carrying capacity levels with the ITCCC model and analyses regional characteristics using the spatial-temporal differentiation method. The results show that the traffic environment significantly impacts the ITCCC. Further low-carbon transport policies and measures are recommended to achieve sustainable development of integrated transport in UAs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Environmental regulations are considered a prerequisite for environmental performance. However, very limited studies have explored the asymmetric relationship between clean energy consumption, environmental regulation, and CO 2 emissions. This study scrutinizes the asymmetry phenomenon in environmental regulation-clean energy consumption and environmental quality nexus in China by using the time series nonlinear ARDL approach by covering the period 1993-2019. The result reveals that the impact of environmental regulation on clean energy consumption and CO 2 emissions is asymmetric. A positive change in environmental regulation has a positive effect on clean energy consumption but a negative impact on CO 2 emissions in the long run. While a negative change in environmental regulation has insignificant effects on clean energy consumption and CO 2 emissions in the long run. The global agri-food system relies on synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilisation to increase crop yields, yet the use of synthetic N fertiliser is unsustainable. In this study we estimate global greenhouse (GHG) emissions due to synthetic N fertiliser manufacture, transportation, and field use in agricultural systems. By developing the largest field-level dataset available on N 2 O soil emissions we estimate national, regional and global N 2 O direct emission factors (EFs), while we retrieve from the literature the EFs for indirect N 2 O soil emissions, and for N fertiliser manufacturing and transportation. We find that the synthetic N fertiliser supply chain was responsible for estimated emissions of 1.13 GtCO 2 e in 2018, representing 10.6% of agricultural emissions and 2.1% of global GHG emissions. Synthetic N fertiliser production accounted for 38.8% of total synthetic N fertiliser-associated emissions, while field emissions accounted for 58.6% and transportation accounted for the remaining 2.6%. The top four emitters together, China, India, USA and EU28 accounted for 62% of the total. Historical trends reveal the great disparity in total and per capita N use in regional food production. To achieve the goal of energy conservation and emission reduction, China has launched its national carbon-emission trading scheme (ETS). Therefore, it is of great significance to evaluate the implementation of ETS from the perspective of regional ecologicalization efficiency of industry. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces and cities from 2007 to 2019, this study takes the SBM-DEA model to measure the regional ecologicalization efficiency of industry, uses the Difference-in-Difference (DID) model to evaluate the influence of ETS on the regional ecologicalization efficiency of industry, and verifies the outcome by propensity score matching method and counterfactual test. The mediating effect model is used to test the acting pattern of ETS on the regional ecologicalization efficiency of industry. The results show that: (1) ETS can significantly improve the ecologicalization efficiency of industry and shows regional heterogeneity. (2) ETS promotes regional energy conservation, emission reduction, and economic development because of the upgrading of structural optimization, agglomeration of resource synergy, and optimization of ecology. Therefore, it is of great significance to explore the influencing factors of carbon emissions and accurately predict carbon emissions for reducing carbon emissions and slowing down climate warming. This paper takes the carbon emissions of Shanxi Province in China as the research object. Firstly, the emission factor method is used to calculate the carbon emissions, and then the grey correlation model is used to screen out the factors that have a greater impact on carbon emissions (per capita GDP, urbanization rate, resident population, energy consumption, expenditure on R&D projects). Then, an improved grey multi-variable convolution integral model (AGMC(1, N)) is used to accurately predict carbon emissions. The results show that the application of the AGMC(1,N) model to carbon emission prediction has a good prediction effect. In addition, the carbon emissions of Shanxi Province will increase with the growth rate of per capita GDP, energy consumption, resident population, and expenditure on R&D projects, while the carbon emissions will gradually decrease with the increase of urbanization level. The prediction results provide the direction for carbon emission reduction in Shanxi Province. The USA and China have the world's largest GDP and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as having a significant proportion of the world's total population. These form part of the triumvirate of influencing factors which potentially detrimentally impact upon sustainability. How the triumvirate factors have impacted upon the sustainability of the USA and China has not been adequately determined quantitatively or holistically. Understanding this can strongly indicate how significant levels of population, economic growth, and greenhouse gas emissions impacts and influences the indicated levels, nature, and dynamics of sustainability occurring. Therefore, to contribute towards developing understanding of the issues outlined, the Sustainability Dynamics Framework is applied to conduct a sustainability dynamic assessment for the USA and China 1995-2018. The results indicate both countries are consistently unsustainable due to significant levels of triumvirate-based factors, with differing dynamic trends, characteristics, and potential outcomes. The current static nature of the USA's environment-human system provides the opportunity for a managed co-evolutionary strategy. China's dynamic trends indicate a significant increasingly stressed environment-human system, which is at risk of a potential systemic crisis or collapse unless stringent corrective measures are implemented. In order for both countries to return to sustainability, there needs to be population mitigation to return them to optimum levels, and the use of contractionary policies and rapid decarbonation of their economies and societies. More attention has been paid to environmental regulation of greenhouse gas emissions in the energy industry under the transformation of industrial structure. This paper takes microdata of Chinese energy enterprises from 1998 to 2012 as a sample to build a duty-sharing model, analyzes the effect of environmental regulations on the industrial chain, and explains the "double growth" phenomenon that occurred in China, which is nothing short of miraculous in terms of the environment and economy. In the industrial chain, the environmental obligations and responsibilities will be shared between upstream and downstream enterprises due to trade linkages. This paper finds that environmental responsibilities will move forward through the industrial chain when environmental regulations are strengthened. Downstream companies will loosen "relative" control constraints, thereby expanding output but increasing demand for upstream products. Different from the existing research, we claim that, since environmental regulation has a differential effect on the industrial chain, it will promote the growth of output in the entire chain, in contrast to the theory of "cost compliance", which claims that environmental regulation will inevitably lead to the output. CO 2 emission performance evaluation is crucial to make abatement policies. Knowledge about the potential and costs of CO 2 reduction could provide information guides for policymakers and help them implement targeted measures. However, relevant studies are rarely subdivided into detailed industrial sectors, and results are lack of inter-industry comparisons. To fill this gap, this study estimates provincial technical inefficiency, abatement potential, and shadow price of CO 2 from fuel combustion in China's 25 industries in 2001-2017. Results show that China's industry could ideally reduce CO 2 emissions by a further 22.01-33.27%, averaging 1645.96 MtCO 2 . Technical efficiency, abatement potential, and cost vary across provinces and industries and should therefore be fully considered when designing emission reduction targets and control policies. Provinces and industries with low technical efficiency, large-scale emissions, great abatement potential and low shadow price are the key to emission reduction. We thus identify key provinces and industries that need to take on more abatement responsibility. Those findings are of great significance to the formulation of carbon reduction targets and the implementation of abatement policies, and prove the feasibility of China's trans-regional carbon trading. Climate change caused by different anthropogenic activities is a subject of attention globally. There is a concern on how to maintain a clean environment and at the same time achieve optimal use of land. To this end, this study examines the causal effects of land use including agricultural, forestry, and other land categories on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The data for China is collected over the period 1990 to 2012 for the empirical examination. By employing vector error correction model (VECM), it is found that there is significant long-run causality among variables. However, in the short run expectedly, only land under agriculture has strong causality with the GHG emissions. The results in case of variance decomposition analysis highlight that land under agriculture and other use significantly causes the GHG emissions in the long run. Further, impulse responses of variables are also measured with the Cholesky one standard deviation. The results are robust and support the argument that different land uses cause GHG emissions in China. The study provides insights for policy makers to improve the activities occurring on agricultural and other land uses. Assessment of overall potential, including bio energy, needs to include analysis of trade-offs and feedbacks with land-use competition. The calculation of marginal abatement costs of CO 2 plays a vital role in meeting China's 2020 emission reduction targets by providing reference for determining carbon tax and carbon trading pricing. However, most existing researches only used one method to discuss regional and industrial marginal abatement costs, and almost no studies predicted future marginal abatement costs from the perspective of CO 2 emission efficiency. To make up for the gaps, this paper first estimates marginal abatement costs of CO 2 in three major industries of 30 provinces in China from 2005 to 2015 based on three assumptions. Second, based on the principle of fairness and efficiency, China's 2020 emission reduction targets are decomposed by province. Based on the ZSG-C-DDF model, the marginal abatement costs of CO 2 in all provinces in China in 2020 are estimated and compared with the marginal abatement costs of 2005 to 2015. The results show that (1) from 2005 to 2015, marginal abatement costs of CO 2 in all provinces show a fluctuating upward trend; (2) compared with the marginal abatement costs of primary industry or tertiary industry, most provinces have lower marginal abatement costs for secondary industry; and (3) the average marginal abatement costs of CO 2 for China in 2020 are 2766.882 Yuan/tonne for the 40% carbon intensity reduction target and 3334.836 Yuan/tonne for the 45% target, showing that the higher the emission reduction target, the higher the marginal abatement costs of CO 2 . (4) Overall, the average marginal abatement costs of CO 2 in China by 2020 are higher than those in 2005-2015. The empirical analysis in this paper can provide multiple references for environmental policy makers.

Climate change mitigation and adaptation are common global challenges, and how to accelerate carbon neutrality and green recovery is a major global issue. Market-oriented emission reduction policy has been widely concerned for its unique advantages, but most of the current market-oriented emission reduction policies are based on the consideration of end-of-pipe governance and lack of effective control of source reduction. Energy quota trading (EQT) is an innovation of an energy-saving and emission reduction system, which is based on the idea of source reduction. However, it is unknown about the evaluation of the effect of the EQT policy from the macro perspective. Based on the related statistical data of energy consumption, combined with the ARIMA model, STIRPAT model, and the synthetic control method (SCM), this paper analyzes the energy consumption distribution in China from 2001 to 2020 and comprehensively evaluates the effect of EQT in the pilots. The results show that: (1) The overall energy consumption in China shows a steady upward trend, and its distribution is unbalanced. (2) In absolute perspective, EQT can realize the "double control" of the total amount and intensity in energy saving and emission reduction, and the intensity control effect is better than the total amount control effect. (3) In relative perspective, EQT can enhance the potential of energy saving and emission reduction in the pilots, in which it needs to take the regional characteristics into account. The policy effect is still significant when eliminating some unobservable factors, which indicate that the policy is effective and can be replicated nationwide. The study comprehensively evaluates the effect of ETS from multiple perspectives, which can effectively avoid the misjudgment of the policy effectiveness caused by the single dimension evaluation, while it can also be used as a reference for the government to perfect the policies of energy management system and emission control system. Tourism development is recognised as an essential tool in promoting economic growth; however, it may also contribute to environmental degradation. Increased pressure for reducing CO 2 emissions poses new challenges to policy-makers who try to promote economic growth and environmental protection in tandem. Since 2010, 19 scenic areas in China have been declared as low-carbon tourism demonstration zones. It follows that investigating whether CO 2 emissions originating in the tourism industry could, in fact, compromise sustainable development in China becomes an essential area of study. Whilst this is a key concern to society, there are only a limited number of studies that analyse the environmental impact of tourism and the validity of the tourism-led-growth hypothesis. This study considers both domestic and international tourism and explicitly tests the relationship among tourism development, economic growth and CO 2 emissions in China, employing a panel vector autoregressive model and utilising regional data between 2006 and 2017. Some developed economies have run emission trading scheme (ETS) to mitigate carbon emissions. However, we know little about the effectiveness and heterogeneity of ETS in a context of developing economy. This paper evaluates the effectiveness and heterogeneity of China's pilot ETS, the first ETS run in a developing economy. Difference-in-difference (DID) and difference-in-difference-in-difference (DDD) methods are employed to analyze provincial industrial-level data. The heterogeneity of ETS effects is also explored from regional and industrial perspectives. The empirical results show that the pilot ETS can effectively reduce pilot industries' carbon emissions. The reduction effect of the pilot ETS has a substantial heterogeneity for different pilot provinces and industries. Carbon emissions are reduced by the pilot ETS through technological innovation and the adjustment of industrial structure. The empirical results suggest that policymakers may consider establishing a national ETS and differentiating carbon quota allowance in covered regions and industries in the current pilot ETS.

Low-carbon transition has gradually become the focus of research on environmental issues. This paper takes China's eight major economic regions as the entry point. First, carbon emissions are measured according to United Nations' baseline methodologies. Second, the stochastic nonparametric data envelope analysis (StoNED) model is used to measure energy efficiency to improve the accuracy of the measurement. Finally, considering the temporal and spatial nonstationarity of carbon emission data, this paper constructs geographically and temporally weighted regression-stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology (GTWR-STIRPAT) model, which can accurately analyze the impact of each driving factor of carbon emissions. This paper also explores efficient emission reduction paths in conjunction with the forcing mechanism. According to the study, China's carbon emissions show a decreasing trend from coastal areas to inland areas. In addition, there are significant problems with carbon emissions in China: some regions focus on improving energy efficiency but neglect increasing energy consumption; some regions focus on industrial development but neglect long-term emission reductions. Among the driving factors, energy efficiency, foreign trade, environmental regulations, and industrial structure have the effects of spatiotemporal heterogeneity, spatial heterogeneity, and time lag on carbon emissions, respectively. A comprehensive understanding of the relationships between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and industrial structure and economic growth holds great significance for China to realize the development of a green economy. This paper calculates GHG emissions based on China's energy consumption, divides the industrial structure in detail, and uses the extended Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and Technology model that is realized by PLS method and Tapio decoupling model to study the relationship of GHG emissions to industrial structure and economic growth. The results show that (1) China's total GHG emissions showed a year-on-year growth trend from 2000 to 2017. For CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O, only N 2 O emission showed a significant downward trend, while CO 2 and CH 4 emissions showed a slow growth trend. (2) The proportions of added value of industry and construction are positively correlated with GHG emissions, while those of farming, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery; wholesale and retail trade; transport; and accommodation and catering are negatively correlated with GHG emissions. (3) China's GHG emissions and overall economic growth are in a decoupling state, but in the energy field, N 2 O emission reduction control has the best effect. Additionally, the overall economic growth of China's industrial sector and GHG emissions have experienced the process of decoupling-link-negative decoupling-link-decoupling. Graphical abstract.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wetlands have exacerbated global warming, attracting worldwide attention. However, the research process and development trends in this field remain unknown. Herein, 1865 papers related to wetlands GHG emissions published from January 2000 to December 2023 were selected, and CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used for bibliometric analysis to visually analyze the publications distribution, research authors, organizations and countries, core journal and keywords, and discussed the research progress, trends and hotspots in the fields. Over the past 24 years, the research has gone through three phases: the "embryonic" stage (2000-2006), the accumulation stage (2007-2014), and the acceleration stage (2015-2023). China has played a pivotal role in this domain, publishing the most papers and working closely with the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and Australia. In addition, this study synthesized 311 field observations from 123 publications to analyze the variability in GHG emissions and their driving factors in four different types of natural wetlands. The results suggested that the average carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ), and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) fluxes in different wetlands were significantly different. River wetlands exhibited the highest GHG fluxes, while marsh wetlands demonstrated greater global warming potential (GWP). The average CO 2 , CH 4 and N 2 O fluxes were 60.41 mg m -2 ·h -1 , 2.52 mg m -2 ·h -1 and 0.05 mg m -2 ·h -1 , respectively. The GWP of Chinese natural wetlands was estimated as 648.72 Tg·CO 2 -eq·yr -1 , and CH 4 contributed the largest warming effect, accounting for 57.43%. Correlation analysis showed that geographical location, climate factors, and soil conditions collectively regulated GHG emissions from wetlands. Rice production is a primary contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, with unclear pathways towards carbon neutrality. Here, through a comprehensive assessment of direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emission using DNDC model and indirect GHG emission using emission factor methods, we estimated the annual crop yield, GHG emission amount and intensity, and economic benefits of different cropping patterns in the climate-sensitive regions of rice production in China. Through the expansion of single-rice and cropping pattern change from the wheat-rice to wheat-rice-rice in the climate-sensitive regions of single and triple-cropping cultivations, the total grain yield increased by 4.4 % and 4.5 % compared with the current national grain production, the GHG emission would increase by 2.4 % and 5.4 % of the current national GHG emissions from rice and wheat production, the net economic benefits could increase 0.9 % and decrease 2.0 % of the national output value of rice and wheat production. Ensuring agricultural security and preserving the health of wetland ecosystems are crucial concerns facing northeast China. However, the adverse effects of environmental pollution, especially nitrogen (N), caused by prolonged agricultural development on the health of marsh wetlands cannot be systematically recognized. To address this issue, an 18-year trial with four different levels of N application was carried out in a typical area of the Northeast region: 0, 6, 12, and 24 gN·m -2 ·a -1 (referred to as CK, N6, N12, and N24, respectively) to investigate changes in wetland ecological functioning. The results showed that long-term N input significantly enhanced soil N availability. High-level of N addition (N24) significantly reduced soil bacterial richness in October, while fungal diversity was significantly higher in June than in October for both control and N6 treatments. The main environmental factors affecting microorganisms in June were TN, NH 4 + , and EC, while bacterial and fungal communities were influenced by TN and Leaf Area Index (LAI), respectively, in October. It was found that the AN16S gene was significantly higher in June than in October, indicating that summer is the critical time for N removal in the wetland. N addition significantly reduced the abundance of the NIFH gene and decreased the N fixation potential of the wetland. In June, low and medium levels of N inputs promoted denitrification processes in the wetland and elevated the wetland N 2 O emission potential. The abundance of NARG, NIRK, and NOSZ genes decreased significantly in October compared to June, indicating a decrease in the wetland N 2 O emission potential. Additionally, it was observed that soil methanotrophs were positively affected by NH 4 + and TN in October, thereby reducing the wetland CH 4 emission potential. Mollisols rich in natural organic matter are a significant sink of carbon (C) and selenium (Se). Climate warming and agricultural expansion to the cold Mollisol regions may enhance soil respiration and biogeochemical cycles, posing a growing risk of soil C and Se loss. Through field-mimicking incubation experiments with uncultivated and cultivated soils from the Mollisol regions of northeastern China, this research shows that soil respiration remained significant even during cold seasons and caused co-emission of greenhouse gases (CO 2 and CH 4 ) and methylated Se. Such stimulus effects were generally stronger in the cultivated soils, with maximum emission rates of 7.45 g/m 2 /d C and 1.42 μg/m 2 /d Se. For all soil types, the greatest co-emission of CO 2 and dimethyl selenide occurred at 25 % soil moisture, whereas measurable CH 4 emission was observed at 40 % soil moisture with higher percentages of dimethyl diselenide volatilization. Molecular characterization with three-dimensional fluorescence and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry suggests that CO 2 emission is sensitive to the availability of microbial protein-like substances and free energy from organic carbon biodegradation under variable moisture conditions. Predominant Se binding to biodegradable organic matter resulted in high dependence of Se volatilization on rates of greenhouse gas emissions. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), consisting mainly of methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O), have been constantly increasing and become a non-negligible contributor towards carbon neutrality. The precise evaluation of plant-specific GHG emissions, however, remains challenging. The current assessment approach is based on the product of influent load and emission factor (EF), of which the latter is quite often a single value with huge uncertainty. In particular, the latest default Tier 1 value of N 2 O EF, 0.016 ± 0.012 kg N2O - N kg TN , is estimated based on the measurement of 30 municipal WWTPs only, without involving any industrial wastewater. Therefore, to resolve the pattern of GHG emissions from industrial WWTPs, this work conducted a 14-month monitoring campaign covering all the process units at a full-scale industrial WWTP in Shanghai, China. The total CH 4 and N 2 O emissions from the whole plant were, on average, 447.7 ± 224.5 kg CO2-eq d -1 and 1605.3 ± 2491.0 kg CO2-eq d -1 , respectively, exhibiting a 5.2- or 3.9-times more significant deviation than the influent loads of chemical oxygen demand (COD) or total nitrogen (TN). The resulting EFs, 0.00072 kg CH4 kg COD -1 and 0.00211 kg N2O - N kg TN -1 , were just 0.36% of the IPCC recommended value for CH 4 , and 13.2% for N 2 O. Besides, the parallel anoxic-oxic (A/O) lines of this industrial WWTP were covered in two configurations, allowing the comparison of GHG emissions from different odor control setup. To achieve carbon neutrality, the Chinese government needs to gain a comprehensive understanding of the sources and drivers of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly at the county level. Anji County in eastern China is a typical example of an industrial transformation from quarrying to a low-carbon economy. This study analyzed the decoupling types and structural characteristics of GHG emissions and the driving factors of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions in the Anji from 2006 to 2019, and explored the differences between county-level and provincial-level or city-level results. It was observed that energy-related activities are the main source of GHG emissions in Anji and that economic development is the driving factor behind the increasing CO 2 emissions. However, industrial transformation and upgradation coupled with the alternative use of clean energy limit the growth of GHG emissions. Livestock and poultry products are an essential human food source. However, the rapid development of the livestock sector (LS) has caused it to become a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Consequently, investigating the spatio-temporal characteristics and evolution of GHG emissions is crucial to facilitate the green development of the LS and achieve "peak carbon and carbon neutrality". This study combined life cycle assessment (LCA) with the IPCC Tier II method to construct a novel GHG emissions inventory. The GHG emissions of 31 provinces in China from 2000 to 2021 were calculated, and their spatio-temporal characteristics were revealed. Then, the stochastic impacts by regression on population, affluence, and technology (STIRPAT) model was used to identify the main driving factors of GHG emissions in six regions of China and explore the emission reduction potential. The results showed that GHG emissions increased and then decreased from 2000 to 2021, following a gradual and steady trend. The peak of 628.55 Mt CO 2 -eq was reached in 2006. The main GHG-producing segments were enteric fermentation, slaughtering and processing, and manure management, accounting for 45.39 %, 26.34 %, and 23.08 % of total GHG emissions, respectively. Overall, the center of gravity of GHG emissions in China migrated northward, with spatial aggregation observed since 2016. The high emission intensity regions were mainly located west of the "Hu Huanyong line". Economic efficiency and emissions intensity were the main drivers of GHG emissions. Under the baseline scenario, GHG emissions are not projected to peak until 2050. Therefore, urgent action is needed to promote the low-carbon green development of the LS in China. The results can serve as scientific references for the macro-prevention and control of GHG emissions, aiding strategic decision-making. The municipal solid waste (MSW) management is significantly contributing to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Analyzing the emission pattern of GHGs from MSW is essential for formulating appropriate carbon mitigation policies. Based on IPCC Models, GHG emissions from MSW were calculated in Chinese provinces from 2004 to 2021 by landfilling and incineration operations, separately. Landfilling and incineration generated approximately 1271 MtCO 2 -eq and 198 MtCO 2 -eq from 2004 to 2021, respectively. GHG emissions from landfilling increased from 2004 to 2020 and declined in 2021, while GHG emissions from incineration demonstrated an increasing trend with three distinct growth stages. A panel regression model was then employed to identify the key factors influencing GHG emissions. GDP and population are positively related to GHG emissions from landfills, while PCCE is negatively related to GHG emissions from landfills. GDP and PCCE have a positive impact on GHG emissions from incineration, while population showed no significant impact. Multi-expression programming was used to develop an explicit model, forecasting GHG emissions from MSW by 2030. From 2022 to 2024, GHG emissions from landfills will quickly decrease, while GHG emissions from incineration will rapidly increase. Subsequently, the GHG emission rate of incineration will slow down, and GHGs from landfilling will slowly decrease due to no MSW for landfill disposal. Optimizing crop distribution stands as a pivotal approach to climate change adaption, enhancing crop production sustainability, and has been recognized for its immense potential in ensuring food security while minimizing environmental impacts. Here, we developed a climate-adaptive framework to optimize the distribution of staple crops (i.e., wheat, maize, and rice) to meet the multi-dimensional needs of crop production in China. The framework considers the feasibility of the multiple cropping systems (harvesting more than once on a cropland a year) and adopts a multi-dimensional approach, incorporating goals related to crop production, water consumption, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By optimizing, the total irrigated area of three crops would decrease by 7.7 % accompanied by a substantial 69.8 % increase in rain-fed areas compared to the baseline in 2010. This optimized strategy resulted in a notable 10.0 % reduction in total GHG emissions and a 13.1 % decrease in irrigation water consumption while maintaining consistent crop production levels. In 2030, maintaining the existing crop distribution and relying solely on yield growth would lead to a significant maize production shortfall of 27.0 %, highlighting a looming challenge. To address this concern, strategic adjustments were made by reducing irrigated areas for wheat, rice, and maize by 2.3 %, 12.8 %, and 6.1 %, respectively, while simultaneously augmenting rain-fed areas for wheat and maize by 120.2 % and 55.9 %, respectively. These modifications ensure that production demands for all three crops are met, while yielding a 6.9 % reduction in GHG emissions and a 15.1 % reduction in irrigation water consumption. Two main challenges which human society faces for sustainable development goals are the maintenance of food security and mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Here, we examined the impacts of six fertilization treatments including unfertilized control (CK), mineral nitrogen (N, 90 kg N ha -1 ), mineral N plus 30 kg P ha -1 phosphorus (NP), NP combined with 3.75 Mg ha -1 straw (NP + Str), farmyard manure (Man, 75 Mg ha -1 ), and NP combined with manure (NP + Man) on crop productivity and carbon emissions (soil GHG emission; GHGI, yield-based GHG intensity; NGHGB, net GHG balance; carbon footprint, CF) in a maize-wheat cropping system during two years (April 2018-June 2020) in a semi-arid continental climate after 40 years of fertilization in the Northwest China. Manure and straw increased total GHG by 38-60 % compared to the mineral fertilizers alone, which was mainly due to the 49-80 % higher direct emissions of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) rather than nitrous oxide (N 2 O). Compared to the N fertilizer alone, organic amendments and NP increased cumulative energy yield by 134-202 % but decreased GHGI by 38-55 %, indicating that organic fertilizers increased crop productivity at the cost of higher GHG emissions. When the soil organic carbon changes (ΔSOC) were accounted for in the C emission balance, manure application acted as a net C sink due to the NGHGB recorded with -123 kg CO 2 -eq ha -1  year -1 . When producing the same yield and economic benefits, the manure and straw addition decreased the CF by 59-85 % compared to N fertilization alone. Globally, forest soils are considered as important sources and sinks of greenhouse gases (GHGs). However, most studies on forest soil GHG fluxes are confined to the topsoils (above 20 cm soil depths), with only very limited information being available regarding these fluxes in the subsoils (below 20 cm soil depths), especially in managed forests. This limits deeper understanding of the relative contributions of different soil depths to GHG fluxes and global warming potential (GWP). Here, we used a concentration gradient-based method to comprehensively investigate the effects of thinning intensity (15% vs. 35%) and nutrient addition (no fertilizer vs. NPK fertilizers) on soil GHG fluxes from the 0-40 cm soil layers at 10 cm depth intervals in a Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantation. Results showed that forest soils were the sources of CO 2 and N 2 O, but the sinks of CH 4 . Soil GHG fluxes decreased with increasing soil depth, with the 0-20 cm soil layers identified as the dominant producers of CO 2 and N 2 O and consumers of CH 4 . Thinning intensity did not significantly affect soil GHG fluxes. However, fertilization significantly increased CO 2 and N 2 O emissions and CH 4 uptake at 0-20 cm soil layers, but decreased them at 20-40 cm soil layers. This is because fertilization alleviated microbial N limitation and decreased water filled pore space (WFPS) in topsoils, while it increased WFPS in subsoils, ultimately suggesting that soil WFPS and N availability (especially NH 4 + -N) were the predominant regulators of GHG fluxes along soil profiles. Generally, there were positive interactive effects of thinning and fertilization on soil GHG fluxes. Moreover, the 35% thinning intensity without fertilization had the lowest GWP among all treatments. The incorporation of straw with decomposing inoculants into soils has been widely recommended to sustain agricultural productivity. However, comprehensive analyses assessing the effects of straw combined with decomposing inoculants on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, net primary production (NPP), the net ecosystem carbon budget (NECB), and the carbon footprint (CF) in farmland ecosystems are scant. Here, we carried out a 2-year field study in a wheat cropping system with six treatments: rice straw (S), a straw-decomposing Bacillus subtilis inoculant (K), a straw-decomposing Aspergillus oryzae inoculant (Q), a combination of straw and Bacillus subtilis inoculant (SK), a combination of straw and Aspergillus oryzae inoculant (SQ), and a control with no rice straw or decomposing inoculant (Control). We found that all the treatments resulted in a positive NECB ranging between 838 and 5065 kg C ha -1 . Relative to the Control, the S treatment increased CO 2 emissions by 16%, while considerably enhancing the NECB by 349%. This difference might be attributed to the straw C input and an increase in plant productivity (NPP, 30%). More importantly, in comparison to that in S, the NECB in SK and SQ significantly increased by 27-35% due to the positive response of NPP to the decomposing inoculants. Although the combination of straw and decomposing inoculants yielded a 3% increase in indirect GHG emissions, it also exhibited the lowest CF (0.18 kg CO 2 -eq kg -1 of grain). This result was attributed to the synergistic effects of straw and decomposing inoculants, which reduced direct N 2 O emissions and increased wheat productivity. Based on the integrated model of Super-SBM model, spatial Durbin model (SDM) and Grey neural network model, this paper analyzes the panel data of various provinces in China from multiple angles and dimensions. It was found that there were significant differences in eco-efficiency between organic rice production and conventional rice production. The response of organic rice to climate change, the spatial distribution of ecological and economic benefits and the impact on carbon emission were analyzed. The results showed that organic rice planting not only had higher economic benefits, but also showed a rising trend of ecological benefits and a positive feedback effect. This finding highlights the importance of organic rice farming in reducing carbon emissions. Organic rice farming effectively reduces greenhouse gas emissions, especially carbon dioxide and methane, by improving soil management and reducing the use of fertilizers and pesticides. This has important implications for mitigating climate change and promoting soil health and biodiversity. With the acceleration of urbanization, the increase of organic rice planting area shows the trend of organic rice gradually replacing traditional rice cultivation, further highlighting the potential of organic agriculture in emission reduction, environmental protection and sustainable agricultural production. To this end, it is recommended that the Government implement a diversified support strategy to encourage technological innovation, provide guidance and training, and raise public awareness and demand for organic products. At the same time, private sector participation is stimulated to support the development of organic rice cultivation through a public-private partnership model. Dredging wastewater (DW) from aquaculture ponds is a major disturbance factor in mangrove management, and its effects on the greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes from mangrove sediment remain controversial. In this study, we investigated GHG (N 2 O, CH 4 , and CO 2 ) fluxes from mangrove sediment at typical aquaculture pond-mangrove sites that were stimulated by DW discharged for different input histories and from different farm types. The GHG fluxes exhibited differing cumulative effects with increasing periods of DW input. The N 2 O and CH 4 fluxes from mangrove sediment that received DW inputs for 17 y increased by ∼10 and ∼1.5 times, respectively, whereas the CO 2 flux from mangrove sediment that received DW inputs for 11 y increased by ∼1 time. The effect of DW from shrimp ponds on the N 2 O flux was significantly larger than those of DW from fish/crab ponds and razor clam ponds. Moreover, the total global warming potentials (GWPs) at the field sites with DW inputs increased by 29-129% of which the CO 2 flux was the main contributor to the GWP (85-96%). N 2 O as a proportion of CO 2 -equivalent flux increased from 2% to 12%, indicating that N 2 O was an important contributor to the increase in GWP. Overall, DW increased the GHG fluxes from mangrove sediments, indicating that the contribution of mangroves to climate warming was enhanced under DW input. It also implies that the carbon sequestration potential of mangrove sediments may be threatened to some extent. Quercus gilva, an evergreen tree species in Quercus section Cyclobalanopsis, is an ecologically and economically valuable species in subtropical regions of East Asia. Predicting the impact of climate change on potential distribution of Q. gilva can provide a scientific basis for the conservation and utilization of its genetic resources, as well as for afforestation. In this study, 74 distribution records of Q. gilva and nine climate variables were obtained after data collection and processing. Current climate data downloaded from WorldClim and future climate data predicted by four future climate scenarios (2040s SSP1-2.6, 2040s SSP5-8.5, 2060s SSP1-2.6, and 2060s SSP5-8.5) mainly based on greenhouse gases emissions of distribution sites were used in MaxEnt model with optimized parameters to predict distribution dynamics of Q. gilva and its response to climate change. The results showed that the predicted current distribution was consistent with natural distribution of Q. gilva, which was mainly located in Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guizhou, and Taiwan provinces of China, as well as Japan and Jeju Island of South Korea. Under current climate conditions, precipitation factors played a more significant role than temperature factors on distribution of Q. gilva, and precipitation of driest quarter (BIO17) is the most important restriction factor for its current distribution (contribution rate of 57.35%). Under future climate conditions, mean temperature of driest quarter (BIO9) was the essential climate factor affecting future change in potential distribution of Q. gilva. As the degree of climatic anomaly increased in the future, the total area of predicted distribution of Q. gilva showed a shrinking trend (decreased by 12.24%-45.21%) and Q. gilva would migrate to high altitudes and latitudes. Although rivers are increasingly recognized as essential sources of greenhouse gases (GHG) to the atmosphere, few systematic efforts have been made to reveal the drivers of spatiotemporal variations of dissolved GHG (dGHG) in large rivers under increasing anthropogenic stress and intensified hydrological cycling. Here, through a source-to-estuary survey of the Yangtze River in March (spring) and October (autumn) of 2018, we revealed that labile dissolved organic matter (DOM) and nitrogen inputs remarkably modified the spatiotemporal distribution of dGHG. The average partial pressure of CO 2 (pCO 2 ), CH 4 and N 2 O concentrations of all sampling sites in the Yangtze River were 1015 ± 225 μatm, and 87.5± 36.5 nmol L -1 , and 20.3 ± 6.6 nmol L -1 , respectively, significantly lower than the global average. In terms of longitudinal and seasonal variations, higher GHG concentrations were observed in the middle-lower reach in spring. The dominant drivers of spatiotemporal variations in dGHG were labile, protein-like DOM components and nitrogen level. Compared with the historical data of dGHG from published literature, we found a significant increase in N 2 O concentrations in the Yangtze River during 2004-2018, and the increasing trend was consistent with the rising riverine nitrogen concentrations. Our study emphasized the critical roles of labile DOM and nitrogen inputs in driving the spatial hotspots, seasonal variations and annual trends of dGHG.
