Organic pollution is a serious environmental problem for the coastal zones of seas. The study tested the hypothesis that allochthonous organic carbon derived from St. Petersburg wastewaters is a significant basal resource of carbon for the benthic food webs. We analyzed stable isotope composition of carbon and nitrogen in suspended organic matter in the Neva Estuary and in the tissues of macroinvertebrates and fish. The Stable Isotope Bayesian mixing model showed that waste waters were an important source of carbon for the most of consumers in the Neva Estuary. The autochthonous carbon produced by phytoplankton was a significant source of carbon only for some macroinvertebrates. The main consumers of the carbon derived from waste waters were tubificid worms, chironomid larvae and alien polychaete, which currently dominate in the zoobenthos of the estuary. We analyzed stable isotope composition of carbon and nitrogen of suspended organic matter (seston) and tissues of macroalgae, macroinvertebrates and fish from the coastal area of the highly eutrophic Neva Estuary to test a hypothesis that organic carbon of macroalgae Cladophora glomerata and Ulva intestinalis produced during green tides may be among primary sources supporting coastal food webs. The Stable Isotope Bayesian mixing model (SIAR) showed that consumers poorly use organic carbon produced by macroalgae. According to the results of SIAR modeling, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish mostly rely on pelagic derived carbon as a basal resource for their production. Only some species of macroinvertebrates consumed macroalgae. Fish used this resource directly consuming zooplankton or indirectly via benthic macroinvertebrates. The Neva Estuary situated in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland is one of the largest estuaries of the Baltic Sea. At present, heavy nutrient and organic matter loading, mainly from the Neva River and point sources in the upper estuary are the most serious environmental problem for the Neva Estuary and adjacent parts of the eastern Gulf of Finland. Long-term studies of mid-summer primary production and mineralization of organic matter were conducted in upper and middle parts of the Neva Estuary. A considerable increase of production and biomass of phytoplankton was observed in the middle part of the estuary during the last decades mainly due to an increase in biomass of cyanobacteria. However, they are mostly concentrated in the upper water layers and only a small part of them reached the near bottom water layers and may be used as a food by zoobenthos. The mineralization of organic matter in the water column was twice higher than primary production that indicates the importance of allochthonous organic matter in the carbon budget of the both parts of the estuary. The carbon isotope signature of seston and most of the zoobenthic species in the upper part of the estuary was close to the signature of allochthonous carbon leaking from watershed (− 27‰). Higher values of δ 13 C of seston in the upper mix layer of the Middle estuary indicate intensive primary production in mid-summer. The carbon isotopic signature of zoobenthos in this part of the estuary was also in general lower than in the Neva Bay reflected higher importance of autochthonous organic matter in food webs of the estuary. Knowledge of carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios in organic matter and their changes is important when studying nutrient cycles in aquatic ecosystems. Relationships between δ13C and δ15N values of suspended particulate organic matter (POM), water temperature, salinity, pH, redox potential, chlorophyll a concentration, primary production, and biomasses of different taxonomic groups of phytoplankton in the Neva Estuary were statistically analyzed. We tested the hypothesis that the studied physicochemical and biogeochemical characteristics, as well as the species composition of phytoplankton and its productivity, can be significant predictors of changes in the isotopic ratios of suspended particulate organic matter in estuaries. In the Neva Estuary, δ13CPOM (−16.8–−27.6‰) and δ15NPOM (2.3–7.3‰) changed synchronously. Statistical analysis showed that for both isotopes, the photosynthetic activity and taxonomic composition of phytoplankton are important. For 13CPOM, the second most important factor was water salinity, which was apparently associated with the transition of algae from CO2 to HCO3 consumption during photosynthesis in estuarine waters. For 15NPOM changes, the most important abiotic factor was pH. The study showed that the dependences of POM isotopic ratios on environmental variables obtained for continental and oceanic waters are also valid in transitional zones such as the Neva Estuary.
