The article discusses the results of a study that examined the impact of microhabitat, light level and trap proximity to the European protected species Triturus cristatus captured in bottle-traps. Night counts and trap success in a garden pond in Surrey, England were compared using video records. It noted the high sensitivity of males in shallow water to light levels. Egg substrate material proximity was conducive for female capture. The anti-predator behaviour of males is indicated by their displaying to attract predators and their nocturnal breeding habit. The study suggested placing traps on the pond floor facing into open water and beside edge features or in a shaded open water for bottle-trap to succeed.
