Cet article vise à rendre compte du potentiel régional qui, depuis le dernier bilan effectué en 1990, a connu un profond renouvellement. Pourtant, les différents champs retenus lors de ce colloque restent inégalement documentés. Si une approche anthropologique globale est pour l’heure encore prématurée, en revanche un recrutement des défunts selon le genre ou l’âge est un critère parfois perceptible dans l’organisation des espaces funéraires, notamment à la fin du Premier Âge du fer et au début du Second. À l’échelle de la tombe, ce critère joue également un rôle dans la composition des sépultures doubles. Une première catégorisation des sites funéraires, selon leurs effectifs, leur relation à l’habitat et la présence de monument, distingue quatre groupes rendant compte de différentes formes d’agrégation des défunts. Sur cette base, sont suggérées des correspondances avec la forme des communautés rurales (village, famille…). Concernant le traitement des défunts, est examinée la posture donnée au corps en lien avec d’autres traits funéraires (organisation des espaces funéraires, âge, sexe…), puis est abordée la question de la crémation pratiquée dans un système funéraire basé sur la décomposition du corps. Et enfin la question des mobiliers funéraires traite des spécificités des objets trouvés dans les tombes à inhumation et à incinération. This article attempts a regional overview, substantially updating the data that was available for the last survey in 1990. The various aspects considered in this conference are none the less very unevenly represented. Although a wide-ranging anthropological study is not yet possible, the variable presence of different age and sex cohorts is however apparent in the organisation of certain cemeteries, particularly at the end of the First, and beginning of the Second, Iron Ages. Age and sex characteristics are also significant in the composition of double graves. Initial characterization of cemeteries by the numbers of burials they contain, their relationship to settlement evidence and the presence or absence of associated monuments, identifies four categories taking cognizance of the arrangement of the dead. On this basis, relationships with different types of rural community are hypothesized. As regards the treatment of the dead, different body positions are examined in relation to other traits (e.g. cemetery organization, sex, age). The impact of the introduction of cremation into a funerary tradition based on the decomposition of the body is considered. Gravegoods are analysed with regard to the specific character of objects found with inhumations and with cremations.

Les recherches de ces vingt dernières années en Basse-Normandie ont permis de documenter près d’une petite centaine d’habitats de l’Âge du fer répartis – de manière inégale – sur les trois départements de la région. Si les sites de hauteurs et les sites littoraux, le plus souvent localisés à l’écart des grands projets d’aménagement, sont encore peu renseignés, les autres nous révèlent un domaine soumis à une grande variabilité des formes et à d’assez profondes mutations structurelles tout au long de la période. C’est ainsi qu’après leur examen, et cela au même titre que leurs composantes (forme des maisons, des structures de stockage, des fours domestiques…), ces différentes catégories de l’habitat que sont, les habitats groupés, les résidences aristocratiques, les unités encloses, les unités domestiques isolées et les habitats concertés, sont mises en perspective les unes par rapport aux autres sur une trame chronologique. Investigations carried out over the last twenty years in Lower Normandy have revealed almost a hundred Iron Age settlements, somewhat unevenly distributed across the three departments of the region. Although both coastal and hill-top settlements have been little investigated as they are not often affected by major development projects, study of other sites has revealed a wide variety of shapes and sizes of settlement and evidence for considerable structural mutations over the course of the period concerned. Thus the different elements making up this corpus – namely clustered settlements, aristocratic residences, enclosed units, isolated domestic units and agglomerations – can now be considered alongside each other and set in chronological sequence, as can the various architectural elements of which they are composed (shapes and sizes of dwellings, types of storage structures and domestic ovens).

Au cours des dix dernières années, de nombreuses études pétrographiques ont été réalisées sur des céramiques protohistoriques. Elles concernent une quarantaine de sites bas-normands dont la majorité est implantée sur les plateaux calcaires de la Campagne de Caen. L’analyse des pâtes céramiques et la recherche de provenance des matières premières, croisées avec les récentes études typo-chronologiques, notamment celle d’Ifs « Object’Ifs Sud », permettent d’extraire des ensembles cohérents interprétés comme des productions ou des groupes de production. L’étude de leur évolution permet d’appréhender leurs limites chronologiques sur les sites de consommation. Ainsi, au Hallstatt, les productions en usage sont très diversifiées. Quelques-unes présentent des formes très standardisées façonnées dans des matériaux argileux déjà usités à l’Âge du bronze final. Au passage à La Tène, certaines productions disparaissent alors que d’autres font leur apparition, mais le fait marquant est l’émergence d’un groupe de production local employant des marnes jurassiques de la Plaine de Caen. During the last ten years, several petrological studies have been carried out on protohistoric pottery. About forty archaeological sites in Lower-Normandy are concerned, most of them established on the limestone plateau of the Plain of Caen. Thin-section analysis and provenance research of the clay used to make the pottery, completed with recent typo-chronological studies (Ifs “Object’Ifs Sud” for example) allow us to define consistent series, interpreted as productions or production groups. Thanks to the study of their evolution, chronological limits can be attributed. In this way, we can state that there was a very varied production during the Hallstatt period. Some series are composed of highly standardised forms using clay mixtures inherited from the Late Bronze Age. At the very beginning of the Late Iron Age, some productions disappear and give way to new ones. However, an outstanding production series is characterized by bioclastic clays found on the Plain of Caen.

Cet ouvrage est la publication des actes du 33e colloque international de l’AFEAF, qui s’est tenu à Caen, du 20 au 24 mai 2009. De même que le colloque, il comprend deux parties. La première, qui contient dix-sept contributions, traite de l’actualité des recherches sur l’Âge du fer en Basse-Normandie, une région qui a connu un renouvellement important de la documentation permettant d’appréhender les dynamiques d’occupation et les formes d’organisation territoriale durant la Protohistoire. Plusieurs bilans synthétiques concernant l’habitat rural, les sites fortifiés et la culture matérielle, sont, entre autres, proposés ici. La seconde partie de l’ouvrage traite du thème de la mort et des pratiques funéraires durant la période Ve-Ier siècles avant J.-C. ; elle contient vingt-deux contributions. Ce sujet a été abordé en privilégiant quelques axes de réflexion, de façon à faciliter les comparaisons entre régions. À travers des bilans synthétiques, le thème spécialisé du colloque est traité à l’échelle de la Gaule, avec les éclairages de plusieurs régions de l’Europe celtique. This is the publication of the proceedings of the 33rd AFEAF symposium held in Caen from the 20th to the 24th of May 2009. Like the symposium, this book is divided in two parts. The first part, with its 17 contributions, deals with the current knowledge about the Iron Age in Lower Normandy. An important renewal of the documentation concerning this region allows a better understanding of the occupational processes and territorial organization existing throughout Protohistory. This first part also includes several summary reports on rural settlements, fortified sites as well as finds. The second part of the book, with 22 contributions, deals with the subject of death and funerary practices during the 5th to 1st centuries BC. The subject was discussed focussing on a chosen number of thoughts as to make it easier to compare between different regions. Various summary reports allow an overview of this specialized topic throughout Gaul with perspectives from other regions of Celtic Europe.
