Surface modification is an important means to improve boiling heat transfer. Based on the research of surface wettability, this paper briefly describes the experimental and numerical simulation research on enhancing heat transfer of gravity heat pipe by changing surface wettability. According to the microscopic nature and mesoscopic characteristics of lattice Boltzmann method, the gas-liquid model of pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann method was used to simulate the heat transfer process of gravity heat pipe with different wettability, and the corresponding morphology diagrams of boiling and condensation phenomena were obtained. It not only overcomes the disadvantage that it is difficult to study the bubble nucleation mechanism by arranging seed bubbles or seed droplets in advance when simulating phase transition in the macro flow model, but also overcomes the defect that Lennard-Jones potential in molecular dynamics cannot accurately describe the force between fluid molecules and wall solid molecules. Then, combining the simulated visual images and experimental results, the heat transfer mechanism of gravity heat pipes with different wetting properties is analyzed in detail. The results show that compared with ordinary heat pipes, the equivalent convection heat transfer coefficient of fully mixed wettability gravity heat pipe is increased by about 45.6 % and the total thermal resistance is reduced by about 40.2 %, which provides a theoretical basis for practical application. A comprehensive understanding of the heat transfer mechanism of hydronically-heated structures is crucial to predicting their heating performance. However, few studies considered the heat transfer at the interface of heating pipe and host material. In this paper, heat transfer at two critical interfaces for hydronically-heated concrete structures, e.g. pipe-concrete interface and concrete-air interface, has been tested and analyzed. Two concrete blocks, one with an embedded cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipe and one with an attached PEX pipe, were fabricated to represent heated bridge decks for the heat transfer study. The two blocks were tested inside a freezer box in a series of heating response tests at varied room and fluid temperatures. Measured temperatures at different depths were used to find the convection heat transfer coefficient and the thermal contact conductance between the concrete and PEX pipe through equations developed via finite difference method (FDM). Finite element models (FEM) of the two blocks were developed to verify the thermal contact values derived from a 1-D thermal resistance model. A comprehensive analysis of the temperature response of the models was performed, especially at the two interfaces, and the FEM models were able to predict the lab measurements accurately. An oscillating heat pipe (OHP) is an effective heat transfer device for the thermal management of electronic devices. However, the heat transfer mechanism of the OHP was not fully understood due to its complicated operation characteristics. In this paper, the thermal performance of an OHP was experimentally studied. The condensation and evaporation temperature variations were monitored under different heat inputs and were then used to evaluate the OHP system operating characteristics. Thermal resistance was used as a key parameter to evaluate the thermal performance of the OHP system. The results indicated that as the heat input increased from 25 to 100 W, the average thermal resistance decreased while the stable evaporating and condensing temperatures increased. The equivalent heat transfer coefficient was derived theoretically. It showed that the reciprocal of the radial heat transfer coefficient increased with increasing liquid film thickness. Based on this result, an empirical correlation was proposed to evaluate the thermal resistance of an OHP system. This correlation was validated using both the experimental data provided in this study and the data collected from the open literature. In response to the problems of high mass and high thermal resistance in traditional cold plate collectors, the author proposes a shaped and efficient micro-channel collector structure design for non-normal temperature control scenarios such as high power, multiple heat sources, and highly non-uniform power density. The author conducted numerical and experimental studies on the laminar heat transfer in a highly efficient micro-channel shaped collector for non-normal temperature control scenarios such as high power, multiple heat sources, and highly non-uniform power density, the results show that: The relative deviation between the simulated and experimental values of the pressure drop of the micro-channel collector using perfluorotriethylamine as the working fluid is within -20%, and the relative deviation between the simulated and experimental values of the surface temperature is within +3 ° C, the predicted trend of the pressure drop and temperature field of the collector is in good agreement with the experimental values, indicating the feasibility of using numerical simulation methods for performance analysis and design optimization of 3-D printed micro-channel collectors. As the flow rate increases, the pressure drop of the collector increases approximately linearly, while the value increase of the total heat transfer coefficient gradually decreases, and increasing inlet temperature or heating power will reduce pressure drop of collector and increase total heat transfer coefficient. The influence of gravity on the pressure drop and total heat transfer coefficient of micro-channel collectors is less than 1. Heat pipes are silent heat transfer devices that work on the motion of boiling and condensation process. They have been used in space crafts, heat recovery and ventilation, power conversion, energy, and electronics cooling applications. Over the past few eras, several necessary upgradations in heat pipe technologies have happened to implement new advanced fluids, design modification, and modified wick structures. Heat transfer enhancement due to these upgradations/implementations has been deliberated in many studies. In this paper, performance studies of heat pipes with deposition of nanoparticles and suitable coating made on the wick structure are reviewed. Various heat transfer mechanisms involved in heat pipes with nanoparticles deposition on the evaporator are summarized. Also, the various heat transfer mechanisms in heat pipes while using a nanofluid and a porous coating in the evaporator are summarized. At this age, engineering applications are demanding effective ways of heat recovery and energy savings for their optimum performance. Among other cooling techniques, pulsating heat pipes have emerged as a convenient and cost effective thermal design solution due to its excellent heat transfer capability, high thermal efficiency and structural simplicity. The paper presents an experimental study on the operational limit of an aluminum closed-loop pulsating heat pipe (CLPHP) charged with ammonia. It consists of total 14 turns of aluminum pipe with 3 mm inner and 4 mm outer diameter. Ammonia was used as working fluid with 3 different filling ratios such as 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8. Operation orientations were vertical, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90° and 180° inclinations. Constant electric heat input of 36 W was applied to the heating block and temperature rise in various sections was monitored till steady state was reached. Temperature was measured at different locations of the CLPHP by using thermocouples. The effects of operational orientations and filling ratios were investigated on heat transfer by working fluid Q̇php (Watt), overall heat transfer coefficient U (W/m2 °C) and thermal resistance R (°C/W) considering the measured temperature. Heat pipe is a two-phase heat transfer device with high effective thermal conductivity and transfer huge amount of heat with minimum temperature gradient in between evaporator and condenser section. This paper objective is to predict the thermal performance in terms of thermal resistance, R, and heat transfer coefficient, h, of screen mesh wick heat pipe with deionized water-TiO2 as working fluid. The input process parameters of heat pipe such as heat load, Q, tilt angle, θ, and concentration of nanofluid, ϕ, were modeled and optimized by utilizing response surface methodology with MINITAB-17 software to attain minimum thermal resistance and maximum heat transfer coefficient. The minimum thermal resistance of 0.1764 °C per W and maximum heat transfer coefficient of 1411.52 W/m² °C was obtained under the optimized conditions of 200 W heat load, 57.2° tilt angle, and 0.159 vol.% concentration of nanofluid. Computer Central Processing Unit (CPU) technology is being developed rapidly for better work performance together with smaller size. This technology development produces significant heat flux increase on the processor. In this paper, a cascade straight heat pipe (CSHP) is created for a better CPU cooling system which is a fully passive system using nanofluids and hybrid nanofluid as the working fluid. Heat loads were given to the CSHP at 10 watts, 20 watts, 30 watts, and 40 watts, respectively. Based on the experiment's result, the CSHP with Al2O3-TiO2-water working fluid showed the best performance, decreasing 41.872% of the simulator plate temperature at maximum load while also having the highest condenser output temperature. The CSHP with Al2O3-water working fluid decreased 35.243% of the simulator plate temperature. The CSHP with water working fluid decreased only 28.648% of the simulator plate temperature and had the lowest condenser output temperature. This paper discusses the experimental studies performed on a single closed loop pulsating heat pipe (CLPHP) to evaluate its thermal performance. The pulsating heat pipe is brass which has a single closed loop. Aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and deionized (DI) water nanofluid were utilized as working fluids, with different volume concentrations of aluminium oxide nanoparticles of 0.05 %, 0.5 % and 1%. The aluminium oxide particles are mixed with water in the two-step method to produce a stable suspension. Experiments are carried out in the horizontal mode with watt loads of heat inputs ranging from 10 w to 100 w. The temperature differences between the evaporator and condenser portions, thermal resistance, heat transfer coefficient and thermal conductivity are the parameters used to determine thermal performance. The thermal resistance of aluminium oxide and DI water nanofluid was the lowest, having 48 % less than that of water. The effective thermal conductivity of the heat pipe improves as the concentration of nanoparticles increases. Double-layer heat tubes have been designed to effectively reduce the occurrence of heat pipe rupture accidents. However, inter-tube thermal contact resistance can decrease heat transfer efficiency, thus hampering the heat dissipation in the primary loop system of lead-bismuth reactors. Therefore, optimizing the design of double-layer heat tubes is necessary. This work focuses on the double-layer heat exchanger of a lead-bismuth reactor and utilizes gallium-based graphene nanofluids as a thermal interface material to fill the gap between the heat tubes. Furthermore, the impact of the length, wall thickness, outer diameter, and spacing of heat tubes on the heat transfer performance of the double-layer heat exchanger with and without the nanofluids has been analyzed. The study aims to optimize the JF factor and cost-effectiveness ratio (CER). Genetic algorithms are employed to optimize and evaluate the heat transfer performance of the main heat exchanger based on the four aforementioned parameters. Consequently, a new design scheme is obtained for the double-layer heat exchanger, which increases the optimized overall heat transfer coefficient of the main heat exchanger by 5.79%, pressure drop in the primary loop by 2.32%, JF factor by 5%, and CER by 24.62%. These results demonstrate that the gallium-based graphene nanofluids can effectively enhance the heat transfer performance of the double-layer heat exchanger while reducing the likelihood of steam generator tube rupture accidents. This paper deals with vaporization heat transfer in a small diameter closed two-phase thermosyphon with a long evaporator and a short condenser, filled with water as operating fluid. The internal diameter of the evaporator is equal to 6.4 mm and the length-to-diameter ratio at the evaporator is equal to 166. A similar geometry is commonly used in vacuumed tube solar collectors. In the present investigation, the input power to the evaporator is provided by means of an electrical resistance wire wrapped around the external wall of the tube, while a water jacket is built at the condenser to reject the heat. The performance of the thermosyphon is described by using the wall temperature and the overall thermal resistance for different operating conditions: input power at the evaporator, cooling water temperature at the condenser, and inclination of the thermosyphon (30 deg, 60 deg, and 90 deg tilt angle to the horizontal plane). The present experimental data cover a range of heat flux between 1700 and 8000 W/m² and saturation temperature between 28 °C and 72 °C. The vaporization heat transfer coefficients are compared with some correlations for closed two-phase thermosyphons displaying large disagreement. A new correlation is presented, which accurately predicts the present experimental values and other data by independent labs taken in closed two-phase thermosyphons, varying geometry and operating fluid (water, R134a, and ethanol). This paper describes the experimental investigations conducted on a closed loop pulsating heat pipe (CLPHP) for assessing the thermal performance. The pulsating heat pipe has a single closed loop made of copper. The working fluids used are water and titanium dioxide nanofluids with varying concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles (1.5% and 1%) on weight basis. The TiO2 particles are mixed in water to form a stable suspension using a sonicator. The heat input is varied between 40 W and 100 W in steps of 20 W. All experiments are conducted in the bottom heating mode (evaporator at the top) in the vertical and horizontal orientations. The parameters considered for evaluating the thermal performance are the temperature difference between evaporator and condenser, thermal resistance, heat transfer coefficient, and thermal conductivity. The results of the investigation reveal that the vertical orientation and increase in nanoparticle concentration favors better heat transfer performance of the single closed loop pulsating heat pipe. Thermal control systems have been introduced as an important part of electronic devices, enabling thermal management of their electronic components. Loop heat pipe (LHP) is a passive two-phase heat transfer device with significant potential for numerous applications, such as aerospace applications, high-power LEDs, and solar central receivers. Its advantages are high heat transfer capability, low thermal resistance, long-distance heat transfer, and compact structure. The essential role of wick structures on the performance of LHPs has already been highlighted, but no comprehensive review is available that deals with different parameters such as LHP design and wick size, which are largely decisive and effective in achieving a practical level of thermal transmission governed by wick structures. To rely on this necessity, this article summarizes, analyzes, and classifies advancements in the design and fabrication of wick structures. The main conclusion to be drawn after careful monitoring and weighing of the related literature is that LHPs with composites and additively manufactured wicks show a higher heat transfer coefficient than other conventional structures. Indeed, future works should be focused on the design of more structurally efficient wicks, which may allow us to optimize materials and geometrical parameters of wick structure for higher heat transfer through LHPs. Abstract: In this paper, heat transfer performance of a 40cm-length circular heat pipe with screen mesh wick is experimentally investigated. This heat pipe is made of copper with two diameters; larger in the evaporator and smaller in the adiabatic and condenser. Three different liquids including water, methanol, and ethanol are separately filled within the heat pipe. Low heat fluxes are applied (up to 2500W/m2) in the evaporator and constant temperature water bath is used at three levels including 15, 25, and 35°C in the condenser. Results demonstrate that higher heat transfer coefficients are obtained for water and ethanol in comparison with methanol. Furthermore, increasing heat flux increases the evaporator heat transfer coefficient. For the case of methanol, some degradation in heat transfer coefficient is occurred at high heat fluxes which can be due to the surface dryout effect. Increasing the inclination angle decreases the heat pipe thermal resistance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Visual and instrumental investigations of the processes of condensation and redistribution of a working fluid in a loop heat pipe have been carried out. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of the heat transfer and hydrodynamics during the condensation of water vapor in a flat gap condenser measuring 80×40×1mm. Investigations have been conducted at a condenser cooling temperature of 20, 40 and 60°С. During all operating modes a stratified two-phase flow and film condensation have been observed. Abstract: This paper presents the performance analysis of a finned U-shape heat pipe used for desktop PC-CPU cooling. The experiments are conducted by mounting the system vertically over a heat source situated inside a rectangular tunnel, and force convection is facilitated by means of a blower. The total thermal resistance (Rt ) and heat transfer coefficient are estimated for both natural and forced convection modes under steady state condition, by varying the heat input from 4W to 24W, and the air velocity from 1m/s to 4m/s. The coolant velocity and heat input to achieve minimum Rt are found out and the corresponding effective thermal conductivity is calculated. The transient temperature distribution in the finned heat pipe is also observed. The experimental observations are verified by simulation using ANSYS 10. The results show that the air velocity, power input and heat pipe orientation have significant effects on the performance of finned heat pipes. As the heat input and air velocity increase, total thermal resistance decreases. The lowest value of the total thermal resistance obtained is 0.181°C/W when heat input is 24W and air velocity 3m/s. Miniature heat pipes are considered as an innovative solution able to dissipate high heat fluxes with low working fluid charge, temperature control, and operating with minimum energy consumption and less noise. In this paper, results show that tilt ranging [10°:60°] has not an impact on heat transfer meanwhile the system thermal resistance is the lowest at horizontal position. A theoretical analysis on heat pipe thermal performance has been carried out based on experimental data by predicting heat pipe evaporation and condensation heat transfer coefficient. The measured heat transfer coefficients are close to the predicted results with a mean deviation less than 10%. A hydraulic mathematical model is developed and shows a good agreement with Kaya's study using water as working fluid. This work comprises a parametric study that investigates the effect of particles size, porosity, permeability, heat pipe length on heat transfer and capillary pressure. • Experimental study of evaporation from asymmetric microdroplets. • Increasing levels of droplet asymmetry significantly enhance evaporative transport. • Asymmetric droplets have higher heat transfer performance than hemispherical droplets. • Asymmetric droplets yield smaller thicknesses near regions with high curvature. Droplet evaporation is ubiquitous both in everyday life and numerous engineering, biomedical, and environmental applications. For example, the large amount of latent heat associated with the liquid-vapor phase change process makes droplet evaporation an ideal solution for cooling high-powered electronic devices. Over the past 100 years, many new theories and models of droplet evaporation have been proposed. Still much of the fundamental transport physics remains elusive, which makes it challenging to describe diverse evaporation behavior by a universal mechanism. In particular, evaporation from asymmetric droplets remains grossly unexplored due to their rarity in nature. However, recent advances in micro- and nanoengineering technology have made it possible to tune and maintain droplets in non-spherical geometries, where the interfacial transport rate becomes highly anisotropic along the circumferential direction. Such a characteristic represents a distinctive feature from evaporation of capped-spherical droplets and has not been comprehensively explained by existing theories. This paper exams the evaporation rate and heat transfer performance of continuously–fed water microdroplets confined on heated silicon micropillar structures with circular, square, and triangular cross sections. The evaporation experiments are performed at substrate temperatures ranging from 60 °C to 98 °C. The droplets exhibit a capped spherical shape on the circular micropillar but an asymmetric geometry on non-circular micropillars. Our experimental results show that increasing levels of droplet asymmetry significantly enhance evaporative transport. Specifically, for a 60 °C substrate, a triangular micropillar has 45% greater heat transfer coefficient than a circular one; at 98 °C, the increase reaches 71%. This enhancement is validated by multiphase numerical simulations which show agreement with experimental values. The enhanced heat transfer coefficient from asymmetric droplets is attributed to a reduced conduction resistance inside the droplet and smaller diffusion resistance at the droplet interface, both of which result from the non-uniform geometric features of the droplet along the circumferential direction. Finally, a thermal resistance network is developed to demonstrate the variation in the local droplet thickness and interfacial curvature along the circumferential direction for droplets confined on circular, square, and triangular micropillars. Asymmetric droplets yield smaller thicknesses near regions with high curvature, which results in a smaller conduction resistance and higher fraction of heat transport near the contact line region compared to a capped spherical droplet. Furthermore, with increasing droplet temperature, the thermal resistance associated with vapor diffusion is reduced significantly, leading to greater enhancement of evaporative heat transport. These findings not only provide insights in the evaporation behavior of asymmetric droplets, but also provide important guidance for relevant applications, such as the design of evaporative cooling systems.
