Abstract

The goal of NUMEN project is to access experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by high-accuracy measurements of the cross sections of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. The knowledge of the nuclear matrix elements is crucial to infer the neutrino average masses from the possible measurement of the half-life of 00νββ decay and to compare experiments on different isotopes. In particular, the (18O, 18Ne) and (20Ne, 20O) reactions are performed as tools for β+β+ and β-β- decays, respectively. The experiments are performed at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania using the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) to accelerate the beams and the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer to detect the reaction products. The measured cross sections are very low, limiting the present exploration to few selected isotopes of interest in the context of typically low-yield experimental runs. In order to make feasible a systematic study of all the candidate nuclei, a major upgrade of the LNS facility is foreseen to increase the experimental yield of about two orders of magnitude. To this purpose, frontier technologies are going to be developed for both the accelerator and the detection systems. Abstract

Results on the production of the double strange cascade hyperon Ξ- are reported for collisions of p(3.5GeV)+Nb, studied with the High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) at SIS18 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum for Heavy-Ion Research, Darmstadt. For the first time, subthreshold Ξ- production is observed in proton-nucleus interactions. Assuming a Ξ- phase-space distribution similar to that of Λ hyperons, the production probability amounts to PΞ-=[2.0±0.4(stat)±0.3(norm)±0.6(syst)]×10-4 resulting in a Ξ-/(Λ+Σ0) ratio of PΞ-/PΛ+Σ0=[1.2±0.3(stat)±0.4(syst)]×10-2. This paper presents a review of selected physics results obtained at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH by HADES (High-Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer). Abstract

The HADES (High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer) is a tool designed for lepton pair (e+e-) spectroscopy in pion, proton and heavy ion induced reactions in the 1-2 A GeV energy range. One of the goals of the HADES experiment is to study in-medium modifications of hadron properties like effective masses, decay widths, electromagnetic form factors etc. Such effects can be probed with vector mesons (ρ, ω, Φ) decaying into e +e- channel. The identification of vector mesons by means of a HADES spectrometer is based on invariant mass reconstruction of e +e- pairs. The combined information from all spectrometer sub-detectors is used to reconstruct the di-lepton signal. Abstract

HADES is a second generation experiment designed to study dielectron production in proton, pion, and heavy ion induced reactions at the GSI accelerator facility in Darmstadt. The physics programme of HADES is focused on in-medium properties of the light vector mesons. In this contribution we present status of the HADES experiment, demonstrate its capability to identify rare dielectron signal, show first experimental results obtained from C+C reactions at 2 A GeV and shortly discuss physics programme of up-coming experimental runs. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The EXCYT facility (EXotics with CYclotron and Tandem) at the INFN-LNS is based on a K-800 Superconducting Cyclotron injecting stable heavy-ion beams (up to 80 MeV/amu, 1 eμA) into a target-ion source assembly to produce the required nuclear species, and on a 15 MV Tandem for post-accelerating the radioactive beams. Since December 1999 the Superconducting Cyclotron operates in a stand-alone mode by means of the new axial injection beam line. The primary beam line has been already mounted and tested. The part of mass separator on the two high-voltage platforms together with low intensity diagnostics is already installed while the ancillary items along with the part of mass separator at ground potential will be installed during the next stop of accelerator operations. The target-ion source unit has been successfully tested on-line at GANIL. The goal of such efforts will be represented by the test of the mass separator with stable beams planned at LNS by the end of the year. Abstract

A high-statistic data sample of Ar(1.76 AGeV)+KCl events recorded with HADES is used to search for a hypertriton signal. An upper production limit per centrality-triggered event of $ 1.04\times 10^{-3}$ on the 3 $ \sigma$ level is derived. Comparing this value with the number of successfully reconstructed $ \Lambda$ hyperons allows to determine an upper limit on the ratio $ N_{_{\Lambda}^{3}H}/N_{\Lambda}$ , which is confronted with statistical and coalescence-type model calculations. Abstract

We have developed two techniques for microscopic ion beam imaging and profiling, both based on scintillators, particularly suitable for applications in deep lithography with protons (DLP) or with heavier ions. The first one employs a scintillating fiberoptic plate and a CCD camera with suitable lenses, the second makes use of a small scintillator optically coupled to a compact photomultiplier. We have proved the possibility of spanning from single beam particles counting up to several nA currents. Both the devices are successfully exploited for on-line control of proton beams, down to a beam size of less than 50 μm, in the framework of DLP application. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: An experimental technique is described that is able to measure reaction cross-sections at energies around the Coulomb barrier by using low intensity beams and a Si detector as an active target. Set-up optimization was carefully investigated in terms of collimation, detector efficiency and pile-up rejection. The method has been tested by measuring the total reaction cross-section σ R(E) for the 7Li+28Si system in the energy range of E lab=12–16MeV. The deduced excitation function σ R(E) agrees with the data obtained in a previous experiment. The presented technique can also be applied in order to determine total reaction cross-sections for low intensity radioactive beams at energies around the Coulomb barrier. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

We report on the results of experiments performed to investigate the 58Ni+58Ni 30 MeV/nucleon reaction. In midperipheral collisions a massive fragment (4&les;Z&les;12) production has been observed. The emission patterns exhibit features consistent with dynamical fragmentation of a neck zone between the interacting nuclei, while in addition and at the same time, the projectile-like and target-like residues are subject to statistical decay. The nature of the fragments produced via the two different mechanisms differ both for what concerns charge distribution and isotopic composition. In particular, neutron rich fragments can be produced in dynamical processes, even if the starting nuclear matter presents a N/Z ratio close to the unity. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

The MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer is used in the experimental measurements of Double Charge Exchange and Multi-Nucleon Transfer reactions induced by heavy ions within the NUMEN project. These processes are characterized by small cross sections under a large background due to other reaction channels. Therefore an accurate control of the signal to background ratio is mandatory. In this article, the determination of the MAGNEX spectrometer background contribution on cross section measurements is presented by applying a suitable analysis to quantify the limits of the adopted particle identification technique. The method is discussed considering the 116Cd(20Ne, 20O)116Sn Double Charge Exchange reaction data, however it can be applied to any other reaction channel of interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
