Abstract

Extreme ultraviolet spectra of Na-like and Mg-like Os and Ir were recorded at the National Institute of Standards and Technology using a grazing incidence spectrometer. We report a method in EBIT spectral analysis that reduces signals from contaminant lines of known or unknown origin. We utilize similar ion charge distributions of heavy highly charged ions that create similar potentials for lighter contaminating background elements. First-order approximations to ion distributions are presented to demonstrate differences between impurity elements with and without heavy ions present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The ECOS is considering the construction of a new facility for accelerating high intensity stable beams with energies at and above the Coulomb barrier, the LINCE light and heavy ion accelerator. This facility could be based on a normal conducting CW-RFQ and a superconducting linac, working at 72.75 MHz. Abstract

During the last years, the ECOS working group has been considering the construction of a new high-intensity accelerator of stable ion beams for the next Long-Range Plan of the nuclear physics community in Europe. The new facility (LINCE) will be a multi-user facility dedicated to ECOS science: fundamental physics, astrophysics, nuclear structure and reaction dynamics. Abstract

S3 (Super Separator Spectrometer) is a device proposed for experiments with the very high intensity stable beams of LINAG, the superconducting linear accelerator of GANIL, which will be built in the framework of SPIRAL2. These beams, which will provide in a first phase of SPIRAL2 ions with A/q = 3, can reach intensities exceeding 100pμA for lighter ions (A < 40 – 50) depending on the final choice of the ECR (Electron Cyclotron Resonance) ion source. These unprecedented intensities open new opportunities in several physics domains, e.g. super-heavy and very-heavy nuclei, spectroscopy at and beyond the dripline, muld-nucleon transfer and deep-inelastic reactions, isomers and ground state properties and nuclear molecular resonances. Abstract

Based on the “LINAG Phase 1” conceptual design, a two years detailed study on a ISOL-type facility for the production of high intensity exotic beams, named SPIRAL2, has been launched. The radioactive isotope beams are produced via the fission process, with the aim of 1013 fissions/s at least, induced in a UCx target either by fast neutrons from a C converter or by direct bombardment of fissile material. Fusion-evaporation residues, using heavy ions beams in different targets can also be produced in this facility. The driver, with an acceleration potential of 40 MV will accelerate deuterons (5 mA) and q/A =3 ions (1 mA) Even heavier ions will be possible at a later stage. The driver consists in high-performance ECR sources, an RFQ cavity and independent phase superconducting resonators. Abstract

Based on a multibeam high intensity driver (5mA of deuterons, 1mA of heavy ions) a detailed project study for Spiral2 was started in November 2002 in a large collaboration. Fission rates of up to 1013/s will be possible with standard density UC (2.3g/cm^3), and up to 1014/s with high density (11g/cm^3) UC. Fission may be induced either by neutrons from a converter, or with direct beams. The multibeam driver will allow other high intensity beams, with energies up to 14MeV/nucleon for A/ Q = 3. The radioactive ions will be accelerated by the existing CIME cyclotron, with energies of 1.7-25MeV/nucleon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
