Abstract: Two-particle correlations in invariant mass are studied separately for like-sign and unlike-sign charged particles produced in deep inelastic positron-proton scattering in a new kinematical domain. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the HERA storage ring in 1994, in which 27.5 GeV positrons collided with 820 GeV protons at a centre of mass energy sqrt{s}=300 GeV. The observed enhancement of the like-sign correlations at low invariant masses is related to the dimensions of the hadronic source. The data are compared to different QCD models where the hadronization is performed with the string-fragmentation model. Results are presented for the first time separately for diffractive and non-diffractive scattering, in domains of four-momentum transfer, Bjorken-x, and hadronic center of mass energy, and in intervals of charged particle multiplicity. The observed source radii do not differ strongly from those measured in lower energy lepton-nucleon inelastic scattering, and e^+e^- annihilation., 36 pages, 10 Figures

Abstract: Single particles and jets in deeply inelastic scattering at low x are measured with the H1 detector in the region away from the current jet and towards the proton remnant, known as the forward region. Hadronic final state measurements in this region are expected to be particularly sensitive to QCD evolution effects. Jet cross-sections are presented as a function of Bjorken-x for forward jets produced with a polar angle to the proton direction, theta, in the range 7 < theta < 20 degrees. Azimuthal correlations are studied between the forward jet and the scattered lepton. Charged and neutral single particle production in the forward region are measured as a function of Bjorken-x, in the range 5 < theta < 25 degrees, for particle transverse momenta larger than 1 GeV. QCD based Monte Carlo predictions and analytical calculations based on BFKL, CCFM and DGLAP evolution are compared to the data. Abstract: Deep--inelastic scattering events with a leading baryon have been detected by the H1 experiment at HERA using a forward proton spectrometer and a forward neutron calorimeter. Semi--inclusive cross sections have been measured in the kinematic region 2 = 160 GeV. The measurements are used to test production models and factorization hypotheses. A Regge model of leading baryon production which consists of pion, pomeron and secondary reggeon exchanges gives an acceptable description of both semi-inclusive cross sections in the region 0.7, 30 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Eur. Abstract: Quasi-elastic (z > 0.95) photo-production of ψ(2S) mesons has been observed at HERA for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 40 to 160 GeV. The ψ(2S) mesons were identified through their decays to ℓ+ℓ- and to J/ψπ+π-, where the J/ψ subsequently decays to ℓ+ℓ-, the lepton ℓ being either a muon or an electron. The cross-section for quasi-elastic photoproduction was measured to be (18.0 ± 2.8(stat) ± 3.0(syst)) nb at a photon-proton centre-of-mass energy of 80 GeV. The ratio of the ψ(2S) to J/ψ quasi-elastic cross-sections is (0.150 ± 0.027(stat) + 0.022(syst)). © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: Characteristics of hadron production in diffractive deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering are studied using data collected in 1994 by the H1 experiment at HERA. The following distributions are measured in the centre-of-mass frame of the photon dissociation system: the hadronic energy flow, the Feynman-x (x_F) variable for charged particles, the squared transverse momentum of charged particles (p_T^{*2}), and the mean p_T^{*2} as a function of x_F. These distributions are compared with results in the gamma^* p centre-of-mass frame from inclusive deep-inelastic scattering in the fixed-target experiment EMC, and also with the predictions of several Monte Carlo calculations. The data are consistent with a picture in which the partonic structure of the diffractive exchange is dominated at low Q^2 by hard gluons., 16 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett. B

Abstract: With the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA, D* meson production cross sections have been measured in deep inelastic scattering with four-momentum transfers Q^2>2 GeV2 and in photoproduction at energies around W(gamma p)~ 88 GeV and 194 GeV. Next-to-Leading Order QCD calculations are found to describe the differential cross sections within theoretical and experimental uncertainties. Using these calculations, the NLO gluon momentum distribution in the proton, x_g g(x_g), has been extracted in the momentum fraction range 7.5x10^{-4}< x_g, 27 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Nucl. Abstract: The electroproduction of rho mesons with proton diffractive dissociation for Q^2 > 7 GeV^2 and the elastic electroproduction of Phi mesons for Q^2 > 6 Gev^2 are studied in e^+ p collisions at HERA with the H1 detector, for an integrated luminosity of 2.8 pb-1. The dependence of the cross sections on P_t^2 and Q^2 is measured, and the vector meson polarisation obtained. The cross section ratio between proton dissociative and elastic production of rho mesons is measured and discussed in the framework of the factorisation hypothesis of diffractive vertices. Abstract: Measurements of ep scattering with squared 4-momentum transfer Q^2 up to 35000 GeV^2 are compared with the expectation of the standard deep-inelastic model of lepton-nucleon scattering (DIS). For Q^2 > 15000 GeV^2, N_{obs} =12 neutral current candidate events are observed where the expectation is N_DIS = 4.71 \pm 0.76 events. In the same Q^2 range, N_{obs} =4 charged current candidates are observed where the expectation is N_{DIS} = 1.77 \pm 0.87 events. The probability P(N \geq N_{obs}) that the DIS model signal N fluctuates to N \geq N_{obs} in a random set of experiments is 6 10^{-3} for neutral current and 0.14 for charged current. The difference in the observed and expected number of Neutral Current events is mostly due to events at large masses M = sqrt{xs} in which the positron is backscattered at large y = Q^2/M^2., 30 pages, latex, 8 Figures

Abstract: Low x deep-inelastic ep scattering data, taken in 1994 at the H1 detector at HERA, are analysed in the Breit frame of reference. The evolution of the peak and width of the current hemisphere fragmentation function is presented as a function of Q and compared with e+e- results at equivalent centre of mass energies. Differences between the average charged multiplicity and the multiplicity of e+e- annihilations at low energies are analysed. Invariant energy spectra are compared with MLLA predictions. Abstract: Deep inelastic e^+ scattering data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are used to study the event shape variables thrust, jet broadening and jet mass in the current hemisphere of the Breit frame over a large range of momentum transfers Q between 7 GeV and 100 GeV. The data are compared with results from e^+e^- experiments. Using second order QCD calculations and an approach to relate hadronisation effects to power corrections an analysis of the Q dependences of the means of the event shape parameters is presented, from which both the power corrections and the strong coupling constant are determined without any assumption on fragmentation models. The power corrections of all event shape variables investigated follow a 1/Q behaviour and can be described by a common parameter alpha_0., Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 Figures

Abstract: An investigation of the hadronic final state in diffractive and non--diffractive deep--inelastic electron--proton scattering at HERA is presented, where diffractive data are selected experimentally by demanding a large gap in pseudo --rapidity around the proton remnant direction. The transverse energy flow in the hadronic final state is evaluated using a set of estimators which quantify topological properties. Using available Monte Carlo QCD calculations, it is demonstrated that the final state in diffractive DIS exhibits the features expected if the interaction is interpreted as the scattering of an electron off a current quark with associated effects of perturbative QCD. A model in which deep--inelastic diffraction is taken to be the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure is found to reproduce the measurements well. Models for deep--inelastic $ep$ scattering, in which a sizeable diffractive contribution is present because of non--perturbative effects in the production of the hadronic final state, reproduce the general tendencies of the data but in all give a worse description., 22 pages, latex, 6 Figures appended as uuencoded file

Abstract: A new measurement of the proton structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ is reported for momentum transfers squared $Q^2$ between 1.5 GeV$^2$ and 5000 GeV$^2$ and for Bjorken $x$ between $3\cdot 10^{-5}$ and 0.32 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1994. The data represent an increase in statistics by a factor of ten with respect to the analysis of the 1993 data. Substantial extension of the kinematic range towards low $Q^2$ and $x$ has been achieved using dedicated data samples and events with initial state photon radiation. The structure function is found to increase significantly with decreasing $x$, even in the lowest accessible $Q^2$ region. The data are well described by a Next to Leading Order QCD fit and the gluon density is extracted., Comment: 35 pages, latex, 12 Figures (3 bitmapped)

Abstract: The cross section for the elastic photoproduction of \r0 mesons ($\gamma p \to \rho^0 p$) has been measured with the H1 detector at HERA for two average photon-proton centre-of-mass energies of 55 and 187 GeV. TheFcenterline lower energy point was measured by observing directly the $\rho^{0}$ decay giving a cross section of $9.1\pm 0.9 (\stat)\pm 2.5 (\syst) \mu$b. The logarithmic slope parameter of the differential cross section, ${\rm d}\sigma/{\rm d}t$, is found to be $10.9 \pm 2.4 (\stat) \pm 1.1 (\syst) $GeV$^{-2}$. The \r0 decay polar angular distribution is found to be consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. The higher energy cross section was determined from analysis of the lower part of the hadronic invariant mass spectrum of diffractive photoproduction and found to be $13.6\pm 0.8 (\stat)\pm 2.4 (\syst) \mu$b., Comment: 25 pages, latex, 9 Figures appended as uuencoded file

Abstract: Using the H1 detector at HERA, charged particle multiplicity distributions in deep inelastic ep scattering have been measured over a large kinematical region. The evolution with $W$ and $Q^2$ of the multiplicity distribution and of the multiplicity moments in pseudorapidity domains of varying size is studied in the current fragmentation region of the hadronic centre-of-mass frame. The results are compared with data from fixed target lepton-nucleon interactions, $e^+e^-$ annihilations and hadron-hadron collisions as well as with expectations from QCD based parton models. Abstract: Results on \jpsi production in $e p$ interactionsin the H1 experiment at HERA are presented. The \jpsi mesons are produced by almost real photons ($Q^2\approx 0$) and detected via their leptonic decays. The data have been taken in 1994 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $2.7 {pb}^{-1}$. The $\gamma p$ cross section for elastic \jpsi production is observed to increase strongly with the \cm energy. The cross section for diffractive $J/\psi$ production with proton dissociation is found to be of similar magnitude as the elastic cross section. Distributions of transverse momentum and decay angle are studied and found to be in accord with a diffractive production mechanism. For inelastic \jpsi production the total $\gamma p$ cross section, the distribution of transverse momenta, and the elasticity of the \jpsi are compared to NLO QCD calculations in a colour singlet model and agreement is found. Diffractive \psiprime production has been observed and a first estimate of the ratio to \jpsi production in the HERA energy regime is given., Comment: 27 pages, latex, 9 Figures appended as uuencoded file, figure 8b replaced

Abstract: Data from electron-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV are used for a search for selectrons and squarks within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model. The decays of selectrons and squarks into the lightest supersymmetric particle lead to final states with an electron and hadrons accompanied by large missing energy and transverse momentum. No signal is found and new bounds on the existence of these particles are derived. At 95% confidence level the excluded region extends to 65 GeV for selectron and squark masses, and to 40 GeV for the mass of the lightest supersymmetric particle., Comment: 13 pages, latex, 6 Figures

Abstract: Measurements are presented of $K^0$ meson and $��$ baryon production in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering (DIS) in the kinematic range $10 < Q^2 < 70 $GeV$^2$ and $10^{-4} < x < 10^{-2}$. The measurements, obtained using the H1 detector at the HERA collider, are discussed in the light of possible mechanisms for increased strangeness production at low Bjorken-$x$. Comparisons of the $x_F$ spectra, where $x_F$ is the fractional longitudinal momentum in the hadronic centre-of-mass frame, with results from electron-positron annihilation are made. The $x_F$ spectra and the $K^0$ ``seagull'' plot are compared with previous DIS results. The mean $K^0$ and $��$ multiplicities are studied as a function of the centre-of-mass energy $W$ and are observed to be consistent with a logarithmic increase with $W$ when compared with previous measurements. A comparison of the levels of strangeness production in diffractive and non-diffractive DIS is made. Abstract: A study is presented of the process gamma p -->XY, where there is a large rapidity gap between the systems X and Y. Measurements are made of the differential cross section as a function of the invariant mass mx of the system produced at the photon vertex. Results are presented at centre of mass energies of W_gp = 187 GeV and W_gp = 231 GeV, both where the proton dominantly remains intact and, for the first time, where it dissociates. Both the centre of mass energy and the mx^2 dependence of HERA data and those from a fixed target experiment may simultaneously be described in a triple-Regge model. The low mass photon dissociation process is found to be dominated by diffraction, though a sizable subleading contribution is present at larger masses. The pomeron intercept is extracted and found to be alpha_pom(0) = 1.068 \pm 0.016 (stat.) \pm 0.022 (syst.) \pm 0.041 (model), in good agreement with values obtained from total and elastic hadronic and photoproduction cross sections. The diffractive contribution to the process gamma p --> Xp with mx^2 / W_gp^2 < 0.05 is measured to be 22.2 \pm 0.6 (stat.) \pm 2.6 (syst.) \pm 1.7 (model) % of the total gamma p cross section at W_gp = 187 GeV., 29 pages, latex, 6 Figures

Abstract: A thrust analysis of Large-Rapidity-Gap events in deep-inelastic ep collisions is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA in 1994. The average thrust of the final states X, which emerge from the dissociation of virtual photons in the range 10 < Q2 < 100 GeV2, grows with hadronic mass M_X and implies a dominant 2-jet topology. Thrust is found to decrease with growing Pt, the thrust jet momentum transverse to the photon-proton collision axis. Distributions of Pt2 are consistent with being independent of MX. They show a strong alignment of the thrust axis with the photon-proton collision axis, and have a large high-Pt tail. The correlation of thrust with MX is similar to that in e+e- annihilation at sqrt(see)=MX, but with lower values of thrust in the ep data. The data cannot be described by interpreting the dissociated system X as a qqbar state but inclusion of a substantial fraction of qqbarg parton configurations leads naturally to the observed properties. Abstract: A search for squarks of R-parity violating supersymmetry is performed in $ep$ collisions at HERA using H1 1994 $e^+$ data. Direct single production of squarks of each generation by $e^+$-quark fusion via a Yukawa coupling $\lambda'$ is considered. All possible R-parity violating decays and gauge decays of the squarks are taken into account. No significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions is found in the various multi-lepton and multi-jet final states studied and exclusion limits are derived. At 95% confidence level, the existence of first generation squarks is excluded for masses up to $240 \GeV $ for coupling values $\lambda' \gtrsim \sqrt{4\pi \alpha_{em}}$.The limits obtained are shown to be only weakly dependent on the free parameters of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Stop squarks are excluded for masses up to $138 \GeV$ for coupling $\lambda' \times \cos \theta_t$ to $e^+d$ pairs $\gtrsim 0.1 \times \sqrt{4\pi \alpha_{em}}$, where $\theta_t$ is the mass mixing angle. Light stop squarks are furthermore searched for through pair production in $\gamma$-gluon fusion processes. No signal is observed and exclusion limits are derived. Masses in the range 9 to $24.4 \GeV$ are excluded at 95% confidence level for $\lambda' \times \cos \theta_t > 10^{-4}$., Comment: 31 pages, latex, 11 Figures
