Abstract

The article analyzes the impact of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) renegotiations on the sweetener trade between the U.S. and Mexico. It offers an overview of origins of NAFTA and the agreement's reduced tariffs on U.S. sugar imports. The increased competition between the U.S. and Mexican sugar industries is explored, as well as the goal of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to reduce the U.S. trade deficit with other NAFTA countries.
