Abstract

We prove the existence of dark monopole solutions in a recently formulated Yang--Mills--Higgs theory model with technical features similar to the classical monopole problems. The solutions are obtained as energy-minimizing static spherically symmetric field configurations of unit topological charge. We overcome the difficulty of recovering the full set of boundary conditions by a regularization method which may be applied to other more complicated problems concerning monopoles and dyons in non-Abelian gauge field theories. Furthermore we show in a critical coupling situation that an explicit BPS solution may be used to provide energy estimates for non-BPS monopole solutions. Besides, in the limit of infinite Higgs coupling parameter, although no explicit construction is available, we establish an existence and uniqueness result for a monopole solution and obtain its energy bounds., Comment: 20 pages, 1 figure. Abstract

It is well known that the presence of multiple constraints of non-Abelian relativisitic Chern--Simons--Higgs vortex equations makes it difficult to develop an existence theory when the underlying Cartan matrix $K$ of the equations is that of a general simple Lie algebra and the strongest result in the literature so far is when the Cartan subalgebra is of dimension 2. In this paper we overcome this difficulty by implicitly resolving the multiple constraints using a degree-theorem argument, utilizing a key positivity property of the inverse of the Cartan matrix deduced in an earlier work of Lusztig and Tits, which enables a process that converts the equality constraints to inequality constraints in the variational formalism. Thus this work establishes a general existence theorem which settles a long-standing open problem in the field regarding the general solvability of the equations., Comment: 28 pages

Abstract

In this paper, we consider a system of non-Abelian multiple vortex equations governing coupled SU(N) and U(1) gauge and Higgs fields which may be embedded in a supersymmetric field theory framework. When the underlying domain is doubly periodic, we prove the existence and uniqueness of an n-vortex solution under a necessary and sufficient condition explicitly relating the domain size to the vortex number n and the Higgs boson masses. When the underlying domain is the full plane, we use a constructive approach to establish the existence and uniqueness of an n-vortex solution.

Abstract

In this paper, we prove the existence of finite-energy electrically and magnetically charged vortex solutions in the full Chern–Simons–Higgs theory, for which both the Maxwell term and the Chern–Simons term are present in the Lagrangian density. We consider both Abelian and non-Abelian cases. The solutions are smooth and satisfy natural boundary conditions. Existence is established via a constrained minimization procedure applied on indefinite action functionals. This work settles a long-standing open problem concerning the existence of dually charged vortices in the classical gauge field Higgs model minimally extended to contain a Chern–Simons term.

Abstract

We prove the existence of topological vortices in a relativistic self-dual Abelian Chern–Simons theory with two Higgs particles and two gauge fields through a study of a coupled system of two nonlinear elliptic equations over R2. We present two approaches to prove existence of solutions on bounded domains: via minimization of an indefinite functional and via a fixed point argument. We then show that we may pass to the full R2 limit from the bounded-domain solutions to obtain a topological solution in R2.

Abstract

We study a recently developed product Abelian gauge field theory by Tong and Wong hosting magnetic impurities. We first obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unique solution realizing such impurities in the form of multiple vortices. We next reformulate the theory into an extended model that allows the coexistence of vortices and anti-vortices. The two Abelian gauge fields in the model induce two species of magnetic vortex-lines resulting from $N_s$ vortices and $P_s$ anti-vortices ($s=1,2$) realized as the zeros and poles of two complex-valued Higgs fields, respectively. An existence theorem is established for the governing equations over a compact Riemann surface $S$ which states that a solution with prescribed $N_1, N_2$ vortices and $P_1,P_2$ anti-vortices of two designated species exists if and only if the inequalities \[ \left|N_1+N_2-(P_1+P_2)\right, Comment: 22 pages

Abstract

We prove the existence and uniqueness of a spherically symmetric monopole solution in the Abelian model of Lee and Weinberg in the BPS limit. The solution carries finite energy and unit charge and generalizes the classical SU (2) BPS monopole. We also prove an existence theorem for the model with a general Higgs field-dependent mass term and establish the equivalence of the second-order equations of motion and the first-order Bogomol'nyi equations within radial symmetry assumption and BPS limit. Our methods have wide applicability in other monopole problems.

10. Static cosmic strings on S 2 and criticality

Abstract

In this paper we construct static cosmic string solutions in the Bogomol9nyi phase of the Abelian Higgs model in an S 2 setting. The strings are located at the north and south poles and have identical winding numbers. This construction, in particular, solves an open problem regarding the existence of a 2–string solution on S 2 . Furthermore, we prove that there are no symmetric solutions realizing N strings superimposed at a single point. Such a result implies, in particular, that there is no symmetric 1–string solution on S 2 and is the only known non–existence theorem for cosmic strings confined on a compact surface. The symmetry of the underlying system enables us to work on a nonlinear ordinary differential equation subject to some prescribed boundary data at t = ±∞ A shooting method is employed as an analytic tool in the study of the existence problem.

Abstract

We establish the existence of multivortices arising in the self-dual phase of the standard model of Weinberg-Salam, and its two-Higgs-doublet extension, in the unified theory of electromagnetic and weak interactions. For the standard model, we prove the existence of solutions in a periodic lattice domain and study the effect of the gravitational coupling. We find an important connection of these self-dual vortices and the cosmological constant problem: the cosmological constant Λ may be written explictly in terms of several fundamental parameters in electroweak theory and the two-dimensional surface on which the vortices reside becomes noncomplete. We then prove that such a gravitational background leads to the existence of finite-energy vortices on the full plane with a non-Abelian nature. For the extended electroweak model with two Higgs doublets, we solve the self-dual equations completely. For the periodic case, we prove an existence and uniqueness theorem under a necessary and sufficient condition. This result reveals some exact restrictions to the vortex charges. For the problem on the entire plane, we obtain existence, uniqueness, sharp decay estimates, and quantized fluxes.

Abstract

We establish the existence and uniqueness of radially symmetric self-dual topological vortices in thep=2 members of the hierarchies of (generalised) Chern-Simons Higgs and Abelian Higgs models. We also obtain all possible symmetric nontopological vortices in the Chern-Simons model characterised by an additional parameter governing the decay rates of the fields.

Abstract

This is a survey article concerning some recent mathematical results for the static selfdual cosmic-string solutions in the Abelian Higgs model and in the Weinberg-Salam standard model unifying electromagnetic and weak interactions, both coupled with gravity through the Einstein equations. For the Abelian Higgs strings there is a nearly complete picture. If the Riemann surface M on which the strings reside is compact, it can be shown that M must be S2 up to topological equivalence and there are only countably many values of the Higgs vacuum states for strings to exist. When M is noncompact and conformally a plane there are exact obstructions to the finiteness of energies and geodesic completeness of solutions. For the Weinberg-Salam strings, much is to be achieved. It can be shown in this case that self-dual strings generated from W and Higgs condensation lead to an explicit formula for a positive cosmological constant and the gravitational metric is always noncomplete. This feature leads to the properties that the metric decays sufficiently rapidly at infinity and there exist non-Abelian electroweak strings of finite energies. It is established that for any integer N there are always suitable ranges of the electroweak parameters to allow the existence of W- and Higgs-condensed N-vortex solutions of finite energies.

Abstract

It is shown that there is a critical value of the Chern-Simons coupling parameter so that, below the value, there exists self-dual doubly periodic vortex solutions, and, above the value, the vortices are absent. Solutions of such a nature indicate the existence of dyon condensates carrying quantized electric and magnetic charges.

A series of sharp existence and uniqueness theorems are established for the multiple vortex solutions in the supersymmetric Chern--Simons--Higgs theory formalism of Aharony, Bergman, Jaferis, and Maldacena, for which the Higgs bosons and Dirac fermions lie in the bifundamental representation of the general gauge symmetry group $U(N)\times U(N)$. The governing equations are of the BPS type and derived by Kim, Kim, Kwon, and Nakajima in the mass-deformed framework labeled by a continuous parameter.

Abstract

There are obstructions in the Bogomol'nyi critical phase to the existence of a cylindrically symmetric cosmic string solution of the Einstein equations coupled with the Abelian Higgs model. In the compact case, the obstruction is exact, which forbids the presence of gravitational condensates and leads to the quantization of the energy scale of symmetry breaking. In the noncompact case, the obstruction is an inequality which says that, at a given level of broken symmetry, the topological charge or winding number of a string cannot be too large in order to maintain finite energy.

Abstract

A search for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons in pp collisions at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns recorded by the CMS experiment. The search uses decays of the Higgs bosons to tau pairs. No excess is observed in the tau-pair invariant-mass spectrum. The resulting upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section times branching fraction to tau pairs, as a function of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson mass, yield stringent new bounds in the MSSM parameter space.

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the numerical solutions of the classical Abelian Higgs vortex model in R2 in the critical coupling phase. A globally convergent monotone iterative method will be presented to approximate finite energy multivortex solutions of both the classical and the generalized Bogomol’nyi equations. In the latter context, it is illustrated through a series of numerical examples that the Higgs potential density function may be adjusted to realize in a wide range fairly different magnetic concentration pictures of the model.

Abstract

An interesting feature of the generalized Abelian Higgs vortex model introduced by M. Lohe is that it allows a wider class of Higgs self-interaction potential functions, yet, noninteracting multivortices are still present in the critical coupling phase as the solutions of a modified Bogomol'nyi system. In this paper, we add two new classes of multivortex solutions to Lohe's model. We prove that, under the 't Hooft boundary condition, there are solutions realizing a periodic lattice structure and a quantized flux. A necessary and sufficient condition is obtained for the existence of such solutions. We also show that the Meissner effect occurs in the model. Moreover, we establish for any given vortex distribution in the plane, the existence of a one-parameter family of gauge-distinct solutions of infinite energy.

Abstract

This note is a case study of a general SU(2) gauge vortex model where the two Higgs multiplets are in the adjoint representation of the gauge group and the Higgs potential energy density contains cross interaction terms The vacuum decay of finite-energy solutions is proved and the existence of a non-trivial solution is established. Moreover, for a special choice of the parameter region, the occurrence of a non-linear desingularization phenomenon is observed.

Abstract

In this paper we consider the bosonic sector of the electroweak theory. It has been shown in the work of Ambjorn and Olesen that when the Higgs mass equals to the mass of theZ boson, the model in two dimensions subject to the 't Hooft periodic boundary condition may be reduced to a Bogomol'nyi system and that the solutions of the system are vortices in a “dual superconductor”. We shall prove using a constrained variational reformulation of the problem the existence of such vortices. Our conditions for the existence of solutions are necessary and sufficient when the vortex numberN=1,2.

Abstract

In the recently discovered Chern-Simons model, the reduction to a Bogomol'nyi bound or self-duality depends crucially on the specific form of the Higgs potential energy function, which is characterized by a φ6 type self-interaction. The purpose of this paper is to show that a much wider class of Higgs self-interaction may be allowed to achieve self-duality provided that the kinetic energy term of the Higgs scalar is suitably modified. The existence of topological multivortex solutions is also established. Furthermore, it is remarked that the Meissner effect may occur in the model.

Abstract

In this chapter we study field equations arising from the classical Born—Infeld electromagnetic theory, a topic of current research activities in theoretical physics. In §12.1, we introduce the Born—Infeld theory and use the Bernstein type theorems for minimal surface equations to study its electrostatic solutions. In §12.2, we study electrostatic and magnetostatic solutions in view of finite energy, obtain a generalized Bernstein problem, and find a connection between the minimal surface equations in Euclidean spaces and the maximal surface equations in Minkowskian spaces. In §12.3, we study the Born—Infeld wave equations. In particular, we solve the one-dimensional equations explicitly. We shall also illustrate the connection between the Born—Infeld theory and the Nambu—Goto string theory. In §12.4, we study string-like solutions arising from an Abelian Higgs theory within the framework of the Born—Infeld electromagnetism.

Abstract

In this chapter we present a thorough study of a most natural generalization of the Abelian Higgs theory in (2 + 1) dimensions containing m Higgs scalar fields. We are led to an m × m system of nonlinear elliptic equations which is not integrable. The main tool here is to use the Cholesky decomposition theorem to reveal a variational structure of the problem. In §4.1 we formulate our problem and state an existence and uniqueness theorem. In §4.2 we treat the problem as a pure differential equation problem and state a series of general results for the system defined on a compact surface and the full plane. In §4.3–§4.5, we establish the existence part of our results stated in §4.1 and §4.2. In §4.6 we establish the nonexistence results stated in §4.2. In §4.7 we extend our study to the situation when the coefficient matrix of the nonlinear elliptic system is arbitrary.

Abstract

In this chapter we present a series of results concerning the existence of cosmic strings. Such solutions arise from the Einstein equations coupled with a suitable matter and gauge field system and lead to local concentration of energy and gravitational curvature, a structure relevant in the theory of galaxy formation in the early-time cosmology [321, 322]. In §10.1 we discuss some basic notions in the study of cosmic strings. In particular, we present the elegant solution of Comtet and Gibbons [86] of the harmonic map string equations. In §10.2–§10.6 we present a study of the existence of multiple strings arising from the self-dual Abelian Higgs theory. In §10.7 we consider non-Abelian strings arising from the Weinberg—Salam electroweak theory.

Abstract

"This paper considers the Einstein equations coupled with the nonabelian gauge and Higgs fields. It is shown that, when cosmic string solutions are sought in the Einstein-Georgi-Glashow system and the Einstein-Weinberg-Salam system governing the gravitational-electromagnetic weak interaction forces, the self duality conditions lead to positive values of the cosmological constant which can be expressed by some fundamental parameters in particle physics."
