Abstract

The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. Abstract

We introduce the New-ANGELS program, an XMM-Newton survey of $\sim7.2\rm~deg^2$ area around M 31, which aims to study the X-ray populations in M 31 disk and the X-ray emitting hot gas in the inner halo of M 31 up to 30 kpc. In this first paper, we report the catalogue of 4506 detected X-ray sources, and attempt to cross-identify or roughly classify them. We identify 352 single stars in the foreground, 35 globular clusters and 27 supernova remnants associated with M 31, as well as 62 AGNs, 59 galaxies, and 1 galaxy clusters in the background. We uniquely classify 236 foreground stars and 17 supersoft sources based on their X-ray colors. X-ray binaries (83 LMXBs, 1 HMXBs) are classified based on their X-ray colors and X-ray variabilities. The remaining X-ray sources either have too low S/N to calculate their X-ray colors or do not have a unique classification, so are regarded as unclassified. The X-ray source catalogue is published online. Study of the X-ray source populations and the contribution of X-ray sources in the unresolved X-ray emissions based on this catalogue will be published in companion papers., Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures. Abstract

We summarise observations and our current understanding of the interstellar medium (ISM) in galaxies, which mainly consists of three phases: cold atomic or molecular gas and clouds, warm neutral or ionised gas, and hot ionised gas. These three gas phases form thermally stable states, while disturbances are caused by gravitation and stellar feedback in form of photons and shocks in stellar winds and supernovae. Hot plasma is mainly found in stellar bubbles, superbubbles, and Galactic outflows/fountains and is often dynamically unstable and is over-pressurised. Abstract

Accretion disks around stellar-mass black holes offer unique opportunities to study the fundamental physics of standard thin disks, super-Eddington disks, and structure that may be connected to flux variability. These local analogues of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are particularly attractive for their proximity, high flux, and peak emissivity in the X-ray band. X-ray calorimeter spectrometers, with energy resolutions of 2-5 eV, are ideally suited to study accretion in stellar-mass black holes. The results will make strong tests of seminal disk theory that applies in a broad range of circumstances, help to drive new numerical simulations, and will inform our understanding of AGN fueling, evolution, and feedback., Comment: White Paper, submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey

Abstract

Understanding the origin of the flaring activity from the Galactic center supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, is a major scientific goal of the NuSTAR Galactic plane survey campaign. We report on the data obtained between July 2012 and April 2015, including 27 observations on Sgr A* with a total exposure of ~ 1 Ms. We found a total of ten X-ray flares detected in the NuSTAR observation window, with luminosities in the range of $L_{3-79~keV}$~$(0.2-4.0) \times 10^{35}~erg~s^{-1}$. With this largest hard X-ray Sgr A* flare dataset to date, we studied the flare spectral properties. Seven flares are detected above 5{\sigma} significance, showing a range of photon indices ({\Gamma} ~ 2.0-2.8) with typical uncertainties of +/-0.5 (90% confidence level). We found no significant spectral hardening for brighter flares as indicated by a smaller sample. The accumulation of all the flare spectra in 1-79 keV can be well fit with an absorbed power-law model with {\Gamma}=2.2+/-0.1, and does not require the existence of a spectral break. The lack of variation in X-ray spectral index with luminosity would point to a single mechanism for the flares and is consistent with the synchrotron scenario. Lastly, we present the quiescent state spectrum of Sgr A*, and derived an upper limit on the quiescent luminosity of Sgr A* above 10 keV to be $L_{Xq, 10-79 keV}$ < $(2.9{\pm}0.2) \times 10^{34}~erg~s^{-1}$., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

The advent of the new generation of X-ray telescopes yielded a significant step forward in our understanding of ionised absorption generated in the accretion discs of X-ray binaries. It has become evident that these relatively weak and narrow absorption features, sporadically present in the X-ray spectra of some systems, are actually the signature of equatorial outflows, which might carry away more matter than that being accreted. Therefore, they play a major role in the accretion phenomenon. These outflows (or ionised atmospheres) are ubiquitous during the softer states but absent during the power-law dominated, hard states, suggesting a strong link with the state of the inner accretion disc, presence of the radio-jet and the properties of the central source. Abstract

This White Paper, submitted to the recent ESA call for science themes to define its future large missions, advocates the need for a transformational leap in our understanding of two key questions in astrophysics: 1) How does ordinary matter assemble into the large scale structures that we see today? 2) How do black holes grow and shape the Universe? Hot gas in clusters, groups and the intergalactic medium dominates the baryonic content of the local Universe. To understand the astrophysical processes responsible for the formation and assembly of these large structures, it is necessary to measure their physical properties and evolution. This requires spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy with a factor 10 increase in both telescope throughput and spatial resolving power compared to currently planned facilities. Feedback from supermassive black holes is an essential ingredient in this process and in most galaxy evolution models, but it is not well understood. X-ray observations can uniquely reveal the mechanisms launching winds close to black holes and determine the coupling of the energy and matter flows on larger scales. Due to the effects of feedback, a complete understanding of galaxy evolution requires knowledge of the obscured growth of supermassive black holes through cosmic time, out to the redshifts where the first galaxies form. X-ray emission is the most reliable way to reveal accreting black holes, but deep survey speed must improve by a factor ~100 over current facilities to perform a full census into the early Universe. The Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (Athena+) mission provides the necessary performance (e.g. angular resolution, spectral resolution, survey grasp) to address these questions and revolutionize our understanding of the Hot and Energetic Universe. Abstract

Most of the action in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) occurs within a few tens of gravitational radii from the supermassive black hole, where matter in the accretion disk may lose up to almost half of its energy with a copious production of X-rays, emitted via Comptonization of the disk photons by hot electrons in a corona and partly reflected by the accretion disk. Thanks to its large effective area and excellent energy resolution, Athena+ contributions in the understanding of the physics of accretion in AGN will be fundamental - and unique - in many respects. It will allow us to map the disk-corona system - which is crucial to understand the mechanism of energy extraction and the relation of the corona with winds and jets - by studying the time lags between reflected and primary photons. These lags have been recently discovered by XMM-Newton, but only Athena+ will have the sensitivity required to fully exploit this technique. Abstract

We present the result of a study of the X-ray emission from the Galactic Centre Molecular Clouds (MC), within 15 arcmin from Sgr A*. We use XMM-Newton data spanning about 8 years. We observe an apparent super-luminal motion of a light front illuminating a MC. This might be due to a source outside the MC (such as Sgr A* or a bright and long outburst of a X-ray binary), while it can not be due to low energy cosmic rays or a source located inside the cloud. We also observe a decrease of the X-ray emission from G0.11-0.11, behaviour similar to the one of Sgr B2. The line intensities, clouds dimensions, columns densities and positions with respect to Sgr A*, are consistent with being produced by the same Sgr A* flare. 10. Simultaneous X-ray and optical spectroscopy of V404 Cygni supports the multi-phase nature of X-ray binary accretion disc winds

Abstract

Observational signatures of accretion disc winds have been found in a significant number of low-mass X-ray binaries at either X-ray or optical wavelengths. The 2015 outburst of the black hole transient V404 Cygni provided a unique opportunity for studying both types of outflows in the same system. We used contemporaneous X-ray (Chandra Observatory) and optical (Gran Telescopio Canarias, GTC) spectroscopy, in addition to hard X-ray light curves (INTEGRAL). We show that the kinetic properties of the wind, as derived from P-Cyg profiles detected in the optical range at low hard X-ray fluxes and in a number of X-ray transitions during luminous flares, are remarkably similar. Furthermore, strictly simultaneous data taken at intermediate hard X-ray fluxes show consistent emission line properties between the optical and the X-ray emission lines, which most likely arise in the same accretion disc wind. We discuss several scenarios to explain the properties of the wind, favouring the presence of a dynamic, multi-phase outflow during the entire outburst of the system. This study, together with the growing number of wind detections with fairly similar characteristic velocities at different wavelengths, suggest that wind-type X-ray binary outflows might be predominantly multi-phase in nature., Published in A&A

11. Discovery of periodicities in two highly variable intermediate polars towards the Galactic centre

Abstract

We discovered Fe $K_{\alpha}$ complex emission and pulsation in two highly variable sources (4XMM J174917.7--283329, 4XMM J174954.6--294336). The equivalent widths of 6.4 and 6.7 keV lines of 4XMM J174917.7--283329 are $99^{+84}_{-72}$ and $220^{+160}_{-140}$ eV, respectively. The continuum is fitted by a partially absorbed apec model with plasma temperature of $kT=13^{+10}_{-2}$ keV. The inferred mass of the white dwarf (WD) is $0.9^{+0.3}_{-0.2}\ M_{\odot}$. We detected pulsations with a period of $1212\pm3$ s and a pulsed fraction of $26\pm6\%$. The light curves of 4XMM J174954.6--294336 display asymmetric eclipse and dipping behaviour. To date, this is only the second intermediate polar (IP) that shows a total eclipse in X-rays. The spectrum of the sources is characterized by a power-law model with photon index $\Gamma=0.4\pm0.2$. The equivalent widths of the 6.4 keV and 6.7 keV iron lines are $171^{+99}_{-79}$ and $136^{+89}_{-81}$ eV, respectively. The continuum is described by emission from optically thin plasma with a temperature of $kT\sim35$ keV. The inferred mass of the WD is $1.1^{+0.2}_{-0.3}\ M_{\odot}$. We discovered coherent pulsations from the source with a period of $1002\pm2$ s. The pulsed fraction is $66\pm15\%$. The measured spin period, hard photon index, and equivalent width of the fluorescent Fe $K_{\alpha}$ line in both sources are consistent with the values found in IP. While 4XMM J174954.6--294336 was already previously classified as an IP, we also suggest 4XMM J174917.7--283329 as a new IP. The X-ray eclipses in 4XMM J174954.6--294336 are most likely caused by a low-mass companion star obscuring the central X-ray source. The asymmetry in the eclipse is likely caused by a thick bulge that intercepts the line of sight during the ingress phase but not during the egress phase located behind the WD along the line of sight., Comment: 9 pages, six figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

The determination of fundamental parameters in low-mass X-ray binaries typically relies on measuring the radial velocity curve of the companion star through optical or near-infrared spectroscopy. It was recently suggested that high resolution X-ray spectroscopy might enable a measurement of the radial velocity curve of the compact object by monitoring the Doppler shifts induced by the orbital motion of the disc wind or the disc atmosphere. We analysed a Chandra-HETG+NuSTAR soft state observation of MXB 1659-298, an eclipsing neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB). We measured a radial velocity curve whose phase offset and semi-amplitude are consistent with the primary star. We derived the value for the semi-amplitude of the radial velocity for the compact object $K_1=89\pm19$ km s$^{-1}$, constrained the mass of the secondary ($0.3\leq M_2\leq0.8$ M$_\odot$) and the orbital inclination of the binary system ($73\leq i\leq77^\circ$). These values are consistent with previous estimates from independent methods. Via the same technique, the next generation of X-ray observatories equipped with high spectral resolution instruments (e.g., Athena) will have the potential to measure the radial velocity curve of the primary in high inclination X-ray binaries to an accuracy of a few per cent., Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Abstract

AX J1745.6-2901 is a Low Mass X-ray Binary with an accreting neutron star, showing clear evidence for highly ionized absorption. Strong ionized Fe K$\alpha$ and K$\beta$ absorption lines are always observed during the soft state, whereas they disappear during the hard states. We computed photoionization stability curves for the hard and the soft state, under different assumptions on the adopted spectral energy distributions and the physical parameters of the plasma. We observe that the ionized absorber lies always on a stable branch of the photoionization stability curve during the soft state, while it becomes unstable during the hard state. This suggests that photoionization instability plays a key role in defining the observable properties of the ionized absorber. The same process might explain the disappearance of the high ionization absorber/wind, during the hard state in other accreting neutron stars and black holes., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Outflows in active galaxies (AGNs) are common, although their launching mechanism, location, and physical impact on the host galaxy remain controversial. We conducted a multiwavelength six-month campaign to observe the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469 with several observatories in order to better understand and quantify the outflow in this AGN. We report on the time-integrated line-resolved X-ray spectrum of NGC 7469 obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on board XMM-Newton. We use the RGS spectrum to discern the many AGN outflow components. A global fit is applied to obtain their physical parameters. We find that the AGN wind can be well described by three narrow velocity components at -650, -950, and -2050 km/s. The RGS clearly resolves the -20 50 km/s component in C5+ Ly$\alpha$, while the -650 km/s and -950 km/s velocities are blended. Similar velocities are resolved in the UV. The H-equivalent column densities of these components are, respectively, NH = 7x10^20, 2.2x10^21, and 10^20 cm^-2, for a total of 3x10^21 cm^-2. The -650 km/s component shows a broad ionisation distribution. We identify a photo-ionised emission component blue-shifted by -450 km/s which we ascribe to the same outflow that produces the absorption lines. The elemental abundance ratios of C, N, Ne, S, and Fe to O in the outflow tend to be between 1 - 2 times solar. Preliminary estimates of the absorber distance from the AGN center suggest it is at least a few pc away from the center, but more advanced methods need to be applied in order to obtain better constraints. The complex X-ray spectrum of NGC 7469 demonstrates the richness of high energy phenomena taking place in AGN cores. The subtle spectroscopic differences between the various components require deep, high-resolution observations, such as the present RGS spectrum, if one is to resolve them and perform quantitative plasma diagnostics., Comment: To be published in A&A
