Search

Hyper-luminous optical/ultraviolet flares have been detected in Gamma-ray Bursts and the record was held by naked eye event GRB 080319B. Such flares are widely attributed to internal shock or external reverse shock radiation. With a new dedicated method developed to derive reliable photometry from saturated images of Swift/UVOT, here we carry out time-resolved analysis of the initial White band $150~{\rm s}$ exposure of GRB 220101A, a burst at the redshift of 4.618, and report a rapidly-evolving optical/ultraviolet flare with an unprecedented-high absolute AB magnitude $\sim-39.4$. At variance with GRB 080319B, the temporal behavior of this new flare does not trace the gamma-ray activities. Rather than either internal shocks or reverse shock, this optical/ultraviolet monster is most likely from the refreshed shocks induced by the catching-up of the late-ejected extremely-energetic material with the earlier-launched decelerating outflow. Hawking's area theorem is one of the fundamental laws of black holes (BHs), which has been tested at a confidence level of $\sim 95\%$ with gravitational wave (GW) observations by analysing the inspiral and ringdown portions of GW signals, independently. In this work, we propose to carry out the test in a new way with the hierarchical triple merger (i.e., two successive BH mergers occurred sequentially within the observation window of GW detectors), for which the properties of the progenitor BHs and the remnant BH of the first coalescence can be inferred from the inspiral portions of the two mergers. As revealed in our simulations, the BH area law can be well confirmed for some plausible hierarchical triple merger events detectable in LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA/LIGO-India's O4/O5 runs. Recently, the radius of neutron star (NS) PSR J0740+6620 was measured by Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and an updated measurement of neutron skin thickness of ${}^{208}$Pb ($R_{\rm skin}^{208}$) was reported by the PREX-II experiment. These new measurements can help us better understand the unknown equation of state (EOS) of dense matter. In this work, we adopt a hybrid parameterization method, which incorporates the nuclear empirical parameterization and some widely used phenomenological parameterizations, to analyze the results of nuclear experiments and astrophysical observations. With the joint Bayesian analysis of GW170817, PSR J0030+0451, and PSR J0740+6620, the parameters that characterize the ultradense matter EOS are constrained. We find that the slope parameter $L$ is approximately constrained to $70_{-18}^{+21}$ MeV, which predicts $R_{\rm skin}^{208}=0.204^{+0.030}_{-0.026}\,{\rm fm}$ by using the universal relation between $R_{\rm skin}^{208}$ and $L$. The bulk properties of canonical $1.4\,M_\odot$ NS (e.g., $R_{1.4}$ and $\Lambda_{1.4}$) as well as the pressure ($P_{2\rho_{\rm sat}}$) at two times the nuclear saturation density are well constrained by the data; i.e., $R_{1.4}$, $\Lambda_{1.4}$, and $P_{2\rho_{\rm sat}}$ are approximately constrained to $12.3\pm0.7$ km, $330_{-100}^{+140}$, and $4.1_{-1.2}^{+1.5}\times10^{34}\,{\rm dyn\,cm^{-2}}$, respectively. Besides, we find that the Bayes evidences of the hybrid star and normal NS assumptions are comparable, which indicates that current observation data are compatible with quarkyonic matter existing in the core of massive star. Finally, in the case of normal NS assumption, we obtain a constraint for the maximum mass of nonrotating NS $M_{\rm TOV}=2.30^{+0.30}_{-0.18}$ $M_\odot$. The origins of the coalescing binary black holes (BBHs) detected by the advanced LIGO/Virgo are still in debate and clues may present in the mass and effective spin ($\chi_{\rm eff}$) distributions of these merger events. Here we analyze the GWTC-1 and GWTC-2.1 BBH events, and find evidence for a primary mass dependent $\chi_{\rm eff}$ distribution. Below (above) the mass of $\sim 50M_\odot$, a nearly zero (relatively high) effective spin is typical. In the joint analysis of the primary mass and $\chi_{\rm eff}$ distributions, we identify a sub-population of BBHs characterized by both a bump-like primary mass distribution extending to $\sim 100M_\odot$ and a relatively high $\chi_{\rm eff}\sim 0.3$, consistent with the expectation for the $\geq 2$g merger events in the disks of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our results suggest that the merger rate in AGN disks is around $1.7~{\rm Gpc}^{-3}{\rm yr}^{-1}$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

With the black hole mass function (BHMF; assuming an exponential cutoff at a mass of $\sim 40\,M_\odot$) of coalescing binary black hole systems constructed with the events detected in the O1 run of the advanced LIGO/Virgo network, Liang et al.(2017) predicted that the birth of the lightest intermediate mass black holes (LIMBHs; with a final mass of $\gtrsim 100\,M_\odot$) is very likely to be caught by the advanced LIGO/Virgo detectors in their O3 run. The O1 and O2 observation run data, however, strongly favor a cutoff of the BHMF much sharper than the exponential one. In this work we show that a power-law function followed by a sudden drop at $\sim 40\,M_\odot$ by a factor of $\sim $a few tens and then a new power-law component extending to $\geq 100M_\odot$ are consistent with the O1 and O2 observation run data. With this new BHMF, quite a few LIMBH events can be detected in the O3 observation run of advanced LIGO/Virgo. The first LIMBH born in GW190521, an event detected in the early stage of the O3 run of advanced LIGO/Virgo network, provides additional motivation for our hypothesis., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

So far, in total 15 double neutron star systems (DNSs) with a reliable measurement of the total gravitational mass ($M_{\rm T}$) have been detected in the Galaxy. In this work we study the distribution of $M_{\rm T}$. The data prefer the double Gaussian distribution over a single Gaussian distribution and the low and high mass populations center at $M_{\rm T}\sim 2.58M_\odot$ and $\sim 2.72M_\odot$, respectively. The progenitor stars of GW170817 have a $M_{\rm T}=2.74^{+0.04}_{-0.01}M_\odot$, falling into the high mass population. With a local neutron star merger rate of $\sim 10^{3}~{\rm Gpc^{-3}~yr^{-1}}$, supposing the $M_{\rm T}$ of those merging neutron stars also follow the double Gaussian distribution, the upcoming runs of the advanced LIGO/Virgo will soon detect some events with a $M_{\rm T}\lesssim 2.6M_\odot$ that can effectively probe the equation of state of the neutron stars and the distribution function is expected to be reliably reconstructed in the next decade., Comment: 6 pages,1 table and 3 figures

The $\gamma$-ray emission from molecular clouds is widely believed to have a hadronic origin, while unequivocal evidence is still lacking. In this work, we analyze the Fermi-LAT Pass 8 publicly available data accumulated from 2008 August 4 to 2017 June 29 and report the significant detection of a characteristic $\pi^0$-decay feature in the $\gamma$-ray spectra of the molecular clouds Orion A and Orion B. This detection provides a direct evidence for the hadronic origin of their $\gamma$-ray emission., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures and 1 table

Intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) with a mass between $10^{2}$ and $10^{5}$ times that of the sun, which bridges the {mass gap between the} stellar-mass black holes and the supermassive black holes, are crucial in understanding the evolution of the black holes. Although they are widely believed to exist, decisive evidence has long been absent. Motivated by the successful detection of massive stellar-mass black holes by advanced LIGO, through the gravitational wave radiation during the binary merger, in this work we investigate the prospect of detecting/identifying the lightest IMBHs (LIMBHs; the black holes $\gtrsim 100M_\odot$) with the second generation gravitational wave detectors. In general, the chance of hearing the birth of the LIMBHs is significantly higher than that to identify pre-merger IMBHs. The other formation channel of LIMBHs, where stars with huge mass/low-metallicity directly collapse, is likely "silent", so the merger-driven birth of the LIMBHs may be the only "observable" scenario in the near future. Moreover, the prospect of establishing the presence of (lightest) intermediate mass black holes in the O3 run and beyond of advanced LIGO is found quite promising, implying that such an instrument could make another breakthrough on astronomy in the near future. Puppis A is a very famous and extensively studied supernova remnant (SNR) that shows strong evidence of shock-cloud interaction. We re-analyze the GeV $\gamma$-ray emission of it using seven years Pass 8 data recorded by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT). The morphology of the $\gamma$-ray emission is more compatible with that of the thermal X-ray and IR emissions than the radio image, which suggests a possible correlation between the gamma-ray emitting region and dense clouds. The $\gamma$-ray spectrum in the energy range of 1-500 GeV shows a break at $7.92\pm1.91$ GeV with the photon indices of $1.81\pm0.08$ below the break and $2.53\pm0.12$ above the break, which can naturally explain the lack of TeV $\gamma$-ray emission from Puppis A. GRB 170817A is the first short gamma-ray burst (GRB) with direct detection of the gravitational-wave radiation and also the spectroscopically identified macronova emission (i.e., AT 2017gfo). The prompt emission of this burst, however, is underluminous in comparison with the other short GRBs with known redshift. In this work, we examine whether GRB 170817A is indeed unique. We firstly show that GRB 130603B/macronova may be the on-axis "analogs" of GRB 170817A/AT 2017gfo, and the extremely dim { but long-lasting} afterglow emission of GRB 170817A may suggest a low number density ($\sim 10^{-5}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$) of its circumburst medium { and a structured outflow}. We then discuss whether GRB 070923, GRB 080121, GRB 090417A, GRB 111005A, and GRB 170817A form a new group of very nearby underluminous GRBs originated from neutron star mergers. If the short events GRB 070923, GRB 080121, and GRB 090417A are indeed at a redshift of $\sim 0.076,~0.046,~0.088$, respectively, their isotropic energies of the prompt emission are $\sim 10^{47}$ erg and thus comparable to the other two events. The non-detection of optical counterparts of GRB 070923, GRB 080121, GRB 090417A, and GRB 111005A, however, strongly suggests that the macronovae from neutron star mergers are significantly diverse in luminosities or, alternatively, there is the other origin channel (for instance, the white dwarf and black hole mergers). We finally suggest that GW170817/GRB 170817A are likely not alone and similar events will be detected by the upgraded/upcoming gravitational-wave detectors and the electromagnetic monitors., 6 pages, 5 figures, published in ApJL 853 L10

Neutron star$-$black hole (NS$-$BH) coalescences are widely believed to be promising gravitational wave sources in the era of advanced detectors of LIGO/Virgo but such binaries have never been directly detected yet. Evidence for NS$-$BH coalescences have been suggested in short and hybrid GRB observations, which are examined critically. Based on the suggested connection between the observed macronovae/kilonovae events and NS$-$BH coalescences, we get a fiducial lower limit of NS$-$BH coalescence rate density ${\cal R}_{\rm nsbh} \approx 18.8^{+12.5}_{-8.6} ~{\rm Gpc^{-3}~ yr^{-1}~ (\theta_j/0.1~{\rm rad})^{-2}}$, where $\theta_{\rm j}$ is the typical half-opening angle of the GRB ejecta. The real value of ${\cal R}_{\rm nsbh}$ is likely at least $\sim {\rm a~few}$ times larger, depending upon the equation of state of NS material and the properties of the NS$-$BH system, such as the mass and spin distribution of the black hole. If the link between macronovae/kilonovae and NS$-$BH coalescence is valid, one can expect that at design sensitivity the aLIGO/AdVirgo network will detect NS$-$BH coalescence signals at a rate of at least a dozen per year, and to consequently place constraints on certain physical properties of NS$-$BH systems., Comment: 5 pages, 1 table, 2 figures

We show that the peculiar early optical and in particular X-ray afterglow emission of the short duration burst GRB 130603B can be explained by continuous energy injection into the blastwave from a supra-massive magnetar central engine. The observed energetics and temporal/spectral properties of the late infrared bump (i.e., the "kilonova") are also found consistent with emission from the ejecta launched during an NS-NS merger and powered by a magnetar central engine. The isotropic-equivalent kinetic energies of both the GRB blastwave and the kilonova are about $E_{\rm k}\sim 10^{51}$ erg, consistent with being powered by a near-isotropic magnetar wind. However, this relatively small value demands that most of the initial rotational energy of the magnetar $(\sim {\rm a~ few \times 10^{52}~ erg})$ is carried away by gravitational wave radiation. Our results suggest that (i) the progenitor of GRB 130603B would be a NS-NS binary system, whose merger product would be a supra-massive neutron star that lasted for about $\sim 1000$ seconds; (ii) the equation-of-state of nuclear matter would be stiff enough to allow survival of a long-lived supra-massive neutron star, so that it is promising to detect bright electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave triggers without short GRB associations in the upcoming Advanced LIGO/Virgo era., Five pages including 1 Figure, to appear in ApJL

In addition to the two ~1 PeV neutrinos, the IceCube Collaboration recently reported a detection of 26 neutrino candidates at energies from 30 TeV to 250 TeV, implying a confidence level of 4.3\sigma over the atmospheric background. We suggest that these TeV-PeV non-atmospheric neutrinos may originate from two groups of sources, motivated by the non-detection of neutrinos in the energy range 250 TeV- 1 PeV in current data. If intrinsic, the non-detection of 250 TeV-1 PeV neutrinos disfavors the single power-law spectrum model for the TeV-PeV non-atmospheric neutrinos at a confidence level of ~ 2\sigma. We then interpret the current neutrino data with a two-component spectrum model. One has a flat spectrum with a cutoff at the energy ~ 250 TeV and the other has a sharp peak at ~1 PeV. The former is likely via pp collision while the latter may be generated by the photomeson interaction., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

The principal goal of this paper is to use attempts at reconciling the Swift long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) with the star formation history (SFH) to compare the predictions of $\Lambda$CDM with those in the $R_{\rm h}=ct$ Universe. In the context of the former, we confirm that the latest Swift sample of GRBs reveals an increasing evolution in the GRB rate relative to the star formation rate (SFR) at high redshifts. The observed discrepancy between the GRB rate and the SFR may be eliminated by assuming a modest evolution parameterized as $(1+z)^{0.8}$---perhaps indicating a cosmic evolution in metallicity. However, we find a higher metallicity cut of $Z=0.52Z_{\odot}$ than was seen in previous studies, which suggested that LGRBs occur preferentially in metal poor environments, i.e., $Z\sim0.1-0.3Z_{\odot}$. We use a simple power-law approximation to the high-\emph{z} ($\ga 3.8$) SFH, i.e., $R_{\rm SF}\propto[(1+z)/4.8]^{\alpha}$, to examine how the high-\emph{z} SFR may be impacted by a possible abundance evolution in the Swift GRB sample. For an expansion history consistent with $\Lambda$CDM, we find that the Swift redshift and luminosity distributions can be reproduced with reasonable accuracy if $\alpha=-2.41_{-2.09}^{+1.87}$. For the $R_{\rm h}=ct$ Universe, the GRB rate is slightly different from that in $\Lambda$CDM, but also requires an extra evolutionary effect, with a metallicity cut of $Z=0.44Z_{\odot}$. Assuming that the SFR and GRB rate are related via an evolving metallicity, we find that the GRB data constrain the slope of the high-\emph{z} SFR in $R_{\rm h}=ct$ to be $\alpha=-3.60_{-2.45}^{+2.45}$. In order to study the effect of dust extinction on the afterglow of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), we carry out numerical calculations with high precision based on rigorous Mie theory and latest optical properties of interstellar dust grains, and analyze the different extinction curves produced by dust grains with different physical parameters. Our results indicate that the absolute extinction quantity is substantially determined by the medium density and metallicity. However, the shape of the extinction curve is mainly determined by the size distribution of the dust grains. If the dust grains aggregate to form larger ones, they will cause a flatter or grayer extinction curve with lower extinction quantity. On the contrary, if the dust grains are disassociated to smaller ones due to some uncertain processes, they will cause a steeper extinction curve with larger amount of extinction. In an effort to understand the puzzle of classifying gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), we perform a systematic study of {\it Swift} GRBs and investigate several short GRB issues. Though short GRBs have a short ($\lesssim2$ s) prompt duration as monitored by the Burst Alert Telescope, the composite light curves including both the prompt and afterglow emission suggest that most of the short GRBs have a similar radiative feature to long GRBs. Further, some well-studied short GRBs might also have an intrinsically long prompt duration, which renders them as a type of short GRB imposters. Genuine short GRBs detected by {\it Swift} might be rare that discriminating the observed short GRBs is, not surprisingly, troublesome. In particular, the observational biases in the host identification and redshift measurement of GRBs should be taken with great caution. The redshift distribution which has been found to be different for long and short GRBs might have been strongly affected by the measurement methods. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are brief but intense emission of soft $\gamma-$rays, mostly lasting from a few seconds to a few thousand seconds. For such kind of high energy transients, their isotropic-equivalent-energy ($E_{\rm iso}$) function may be more scientifically meaningful when compared with GRB isotropic-equivalent-luminosity function ($L_{\rm iso}$), as the traditional luminosity function refers to steady emission much longer than a few thousand seconds. In this work we for the first time construct the isotropic-equivalent-energy function for a sample of 95 bursts with measured redshifts ($z$) and find an excess of high-$z$ GRBs. Assuming that the excess is caused by a GRB luminosity function evolution in a power-law form, we find a cosmic evolution of $E_{\rm iso}\propto(1+z)^{1.80^{+0.36}_{-0.63}}$, which is comparable to that between $L_{\rm iso}$ and $z$, i.e., $L_{\rm iso}\propto(1+z)^{2.30^{+0.56}_{-0.51}}$ (both $1\sigma$). The evolution-removed isotropic-equivalent-energy function can be reasonably fitted by a broken power-law, in which the dim and bright segments are $\psi(E_{\rm iso})\propto E_{\rm iso}^{-0.27\pm0.01}$ and $\psi(E_{\rm iso})\propto E_{\rm iso}^{-0.87\pm0.07}$, respectively ($1\sigma$). For the cosmic GRB formation rate, it increases quickly in the region of $0 \leq z \lesssim 1$, and roughly keeps constant for $1\lesssim z \lesssim 4$, and finally falls with a power index of $-3.80\pm2.16$ for $z\gtrsim 4$, in good agreement with the observed cosmic star formation rate so far., Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures. We develop two methods to estimate the bulk Lorentz factor of X-ray flare outflow. In the first method the outflow is assumed to be baryonic and is accelerated by the thermal pressure, for which the final bulk Lorentz factor is limited by the outflow luminosity as well as the initial radius of the outflow getting accelerated. Such a method may be applied to a considerable fraction of flares. The second method, based on the curvature effect interpretation of the quick decline of the flare, can give a tightly constrained estimate of the bulk Lorentz factor but can only be applied to a few giant flares. The results obtained in these two different ways are consistent with each other. The obtained bulk Lorentz factor (or just upper limit) of the X-ray flare outflows, ranging from ten to a few hundred, is generally smaller than that of the Gamma-ray Burst (GRB) outflows., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, ApJ in press

For an unsteady baryonic gamma-ray burst (GRB) outflow, the fast and slow proton shells collide with each other and produce energetic soft gamma-ray emission. If the outflow has a significant neutron component, the ultra-relativistic neutrons initially expand freely until decaying at a larger radius. The late time proton shells ejected from the GRB central engine, after powering the regular internal shocks, will sweep these $\beta-$decay products and give rise to very bright UV/optical emission. The naked-eye optical flash from GRB 080319B, an energetic explosion in the distant universe, can be well explained in this way., Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is well suitable for searching for monochromatic and sharp $\gamma$-ray structures in the GeV$-$TeV range thanks to its unprecedented high energy resolution. In this work, we search for $\gamma$-ray line structures using five years of DAMPE data. To improve the sensitivity, we develop two types of dedicated data sets (including the BgoOnly data which is the first time to be used in the data analysis for the calorimeter-based gamma-ray observatories) and adopt the signal-to-noise ratio optimized regions of interest (ROIs) for different DM density profiles. No line signals or candidates are found between 10 and 300 GeV in the Galaxy. The constraints on the velocity-averaged cross section for $\chi\chi \to \gamma\gamma$ and the decay lifetime for $\chi \to \gamma\nu$, both at 95% confidence level, have been calculated and the systematic uncertainties have been taken into account. Comparing to the previous Fermi-LAT results, though DAMPE has an acceptance smaller by a factor of $\sim 10$, similar constraints on the DM parameters are achieved and below 100 GeV the lower limits on the decay lifetime are even stronger by a factor of a few.
