Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS collecting about 10 6 neutrino interactions. A measurement of ?¯µ-induced charm production is performed by using the presence of a 5% ?¯µ component in the ?µ beam. The measurement takes advantage of the capability to observe the decay topology in the emulsion. The analysis is based on a sample of charged-current interactions with at least one identified muon. About 100000 were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed. By requiring a positive muon charge as determined by the CHORUS muon spectrometer, 32?¯µ-induced charm events were observed with an estimated background of 3.2 events. At an average antineutrino energy in the neutrino beam of 18 GeV, the charm production rate induced by antineutrinos is measured to be ?(?¯µN›µ+c¯X)/?(?¯µN›µ+X) =(5.0-0.9+1.4(stat)±0.7(syst))%. The ratio between neutral and charged charm production rates in this process is (2.6-1.0+1.7(stat)±0.8(syst)). The charm production rate as a function of the antineutrino energy is found to be in good agreement with previous results derived from di-lepton data. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: During the years 1994-97, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. A high-statistics sample of neutrino interactions with a D^0 in the final state was collected. Using the decay mode D*^+ -> D ^0 \pi+ a production cross-section measurement of the D*^+ in neutrino-nucleon charged-current interactions was performed. The low Q-value of the decay was used to isolate a sample of candidate events containing a positive hadron with a small p_T with respect to the D^0 direction. A signal of 22.1 +- 5.5 D*^+ events was obtained. The D*^+ production cross-section relative to the D^0 production cross-section, \sigma(D*^+) / \sigma(D^0), was estimated to be 0.38 +- 0.09(stat) +- 0.05(syst). From this result, the fraction of D^0’s produced via the decay of a D* was deduced to be 0.63 +- 0.17. The D*^+ production cross-section relative to the \nu_\mu charged-current interaction, \sigma(D*^+) / \sigma(CC), was estimated to be [1.02 +-0.25(stat) +- 0.15(syst)]%.

Abstract: The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total, about 100 000 charged-current (CC) neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. In all, 2013 CC interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the CC cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu N-mu -> mu-CX)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +/- 0.32(stat) +/- 0.30(syst))%. The charm production cross-section as a function of neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f(D)(0) = 43.7 +/- 4.5, f(Lambda c)(+) = 19.2 +/- 4.2, f(D)(+) = 25.3 +/- 4.2 and f(Ds)(+) = 11.8 +/- 4.7.

Abstract: The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope was completed in May 2008 and is the first operational Neutrino Telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. The main purpose of the detector is to perform neutrino astronomy and the apparatus also offers facilities for marine and Earth sciences. This paper describes the design, the construction and the installation of the telescope in the deep sea, offshore from Toulon in France. An illustration of the detector performance is given.

The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., 16 pages, 5 figures

The ratio of decay branching fractions of the D^0 into four-charged particles to two charged particles was measured to B(D^0 -> V4) / B(D^0 -> V2) = 0.207+- 0.004. The inclusive measurement of the observed production rate of the D^0 with a decay into four charged prongs in combination with external measurements of this topological branching ratio was used to determine the total D^0 production rate by neutrinos without additional assumption on the branching fractions. The value of this rate relative to the charged-current cross-section was found to be \sigma(D^0) / \sigma(CC) = 0.0269 +- 0.0018 +- 0.0013. In addition, the same normalization method was used to deduce the inclusive topological decay rate into final states with neutral particles only. A value of 0.218 +- 0.049 +- 0.036 was found for this branching fraction. From an observed number of three charged six-prongs events the branching ratio into six charged particles was determined to be (1.2^1.3_-0.9 +- 0.2) x 10^-3. A measurement of the energy dependence of the D^0 production by neutrinos relative to the total charged-current cross-section is also reported. This measurement was used to deduce for m_c, the effective charm-quark mass, a value of (1.42 +- 0.08) GeV/c^2.

A high-statistics sample of neutrino interactions with a D0 in the final state was collected. Using the decay mode D*+›D0? + a production cross-section measurement of the D*+ in neutrino-nucleon charged-current interactions was performed. The low Q-value of the decay was used to isolate a sample of candidate events containing a positive hadron with a small pT with respect to the D0 direction. A signal of 22.1±5.5D*+ events was obtained. The D*+ production cross-section relative to the D0 production cross-section, ?(D*+)/?(D0), was estimated to be 0.38±0.09(stat)±0.05(syst). From this result, the fraction of D0's produced via the decay of a D* was deduced to be 0.63±0.17. Abstract: We present a measurement of the longitudinal spin cross section asymmetry for deep inelastic muon-nucleon interactions with two high transverse momentum hadrons in the final state. Two methods of event classification are used to increase the contribution of the Photon Gluon Fusion process to above 30%. The most effective one, based on a neural network approach, provides the asymmetries A_p(lN->lhhX)=0.030+/-0.057+/-0.010 and A_d(lN->lhhX)=0.070+/-0.076+/-0.010. From these values we derive an averaged gluon polarization delta(G)/G=-0.20+/-0.28+/-0.10 at an average fraction of nucleon momentum carried by gluons eta=0.07., 13 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, submitted to Phys. They were confirmed as neutral-particle decays through visual inspection. Fragmentation properties of deep-inelastic charm production were measured using these events. Distributions of the D0 momentum, Feynman x (xF), z and tan?out, the transverse angle out of the leptonic plane defined by the muon and the neutrino, are presented. The mean value of z was measured to be =0.63±0.03(stat)±0.01(syst). From fits to the z distribution, values for the Peterson parameter ?P=0.108±0.017(stat) ±0.013(syst) and the Collins-Spiller parameter ?CS=0.21-0.04+0. 05(stat)±0.04(syst) are found. For the average value of xF we find =0.38±0.04(stat)±0.03(syst) and for the forward-backward asymmetry A=0.79±0.14(stat)±0.05(syst). Abstract: A measurement of $\Lambda_c^+$ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a sub-sample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in $\Lambda_c^+$ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of $27$ \GeV, the product ${\sigma(\Lambda_c^+)}/{\sigma(CC)} \times BR(\Lambda_c^+ \rightarrow 3p) $ was measured to be $(0.37 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.02(syst) ) \times 10^{-2}$, while the values of $(1.54\pm0.35(stat)\pm0.18(syst) ) \times 10^{-2} $ and of $0.24 \pm 0.07(stat) \pm 0.04(syst)$ were obtained for ${\sigma(\Lambda_c^+)}/{\sigma(CC)}$ and $BR(\Lambda_c^+ \rightarrow 3p)$ respectively.

Abstract: We report on the first direct observation of a neutrino induced charged-current interaction with two subsequent decays of short-lived particles close to the interaction vertex. This rare double- kink signature in the CHORUS emulsion target is interpreted as a $D_s^{*+}$ production followed by the decay chain $D_s^{*+} \rightarrow D_s^+ \gamma, D_s^+ \rightarrow \tau^+ \nu_\tau ,$ \linebr eak $\tau^+\rightarrow \mu^+\nu_\mu\bar{\nu_\tau}$. The event is characterised by small $Q^2$ and small four-momentum transfer squared $t$ to the target nucleon, which indicates a diffractive pr oduction mechanism. A complete analysis of the event is presented.

A search was performed for $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current interactions followed by the $\tau$ lepton deca y into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for $\numtonut$ oscillation. A sample of 6,844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the s election criteria, no $\tau^-$ candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for $\nu_\tau$ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36,182 events with an identified muon), a 90\% C.L. limit on the mixing angle $\sin2t < 1.8\cdot 10^{-3}$ (at large $\Delta m^2$) has been derived.

In a sample of 31,423 nu(mu) charged current interactions, no nu(tau) candidates were found. For large Delta m(mu tau)(2) values, a limit on the mixing angle of sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 3.5 x 10(-3) at 90% C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result. Abstract: We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function gd1 of the deuteron from deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarized muons on polarized deuterons. The results are combined with our previous measurements of gd1. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to compute gd1(x) at a constant Q2. At Q2 = 10GeV2, we obtain a first moment Γd1 = ∫10 gd1dx = 0.041 ± 0.008, a flavour-singlet axial charge of the nucleon a0 = 0.30 ± 0.08, and an axial charge of the strange quark as = -0.09 ± 0.03. Using our earlier determination Γp1, we obtain Γp1 - Γn1 = 0.183 ± 0.035 at Q2 - 10GeV2. This result is in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule which predicts Γp1 - Γn1 = 0.186 ± 0.002 at the same Q2. © 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for $\nu_{\mu}~\rightarrow~\nu_{\tau}$ oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

Abstract: The structure function ratios F2C/F2Li, F2Ca/F2Li and F2Ca/F2C were measured in deep inelastic muon-nucleus scattering at an incident muon energy of 90 GeV, covering the kinematic range 0.0085 < x < 0.6 and 0.8 < Q2 < 17 GeV2. The sensitivity of the nuclear structure functions to the size and mean density of the target nucleus is discussed.

Abstract: After completion of the data taking for the ?µ›?? oscillation search, the CHORUS lead-scintillator calorimeter was used in the 1998 run as an active target. High-statistics samples of charged-current interactions were collected in the CERN SPS west area neutrino beam. This beam contained predominantly muon (anti-)neutrinos from sign-selected pions and kaons. We measure the flux and energy spectrum of the incident neutrinos and compare them with beam simulations. The neutrino-nucleon and anti-neutrino-nucleon differential cross-sections are measured in the range 0.01

Abstract: WOS: 000223122600006 This Letter reports on a study of trimuon events induced by neutrino interactions in the CHORUS calorimeter exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band v(mu) beam. Among the multimuon events produced in the calorimeter, 42 mu(-) mu(-) mu(+) events were selected and their kinematical properties investigated. In the past, several groups collected a sample of about one hundred events of this type but their source was largely unknown. Taking advantage of experimental data presently available on the production and muonic branching ratios of light neutral mesons and resonances, we make absolute predictions for the expected rates in our experiment. Detailed Monte Carlo simulations described in this article show that more than half of the trimuon events can be attributed to this source. Muons from pi- and K- decays in charm dimuon events are responsible for an additional approximate to 25% contribution to the total mu(-)mu(-)mu(+) rate. The remaining 25% of events are likely to come from the internal bremsstrahlung of virtual photons into a muon pair. Associated-charm production with subsequent decays of both charmed particles into muons is a negligible source of trimuon events. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: A study of quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons in charged-current interactions of neutrinos with the nuclear emulsion target of CHORUS is presented. In a sample of about 46 000 interactions located in the emulsion, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified by using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based both on the topological and kinematical characteristics of quasi-elastic charm production allowed a clear separation between events of this type and those in which charm is produced in deep inelastic processes. A final sample containing 13 candidates consistent with quasi-elastic production of a charmed baryon with an estimated background of 1.7 events was obtained. At the average neutrino energy of 27 GeV the cross-section for the total quasi-elastic production of charmed baryons relative to the νN charged-current cross-section was measured to be σ(QE)/σ(CC) = (0.23-0.06+0.02(stat)×10-2. Through an analysis of the topology at the production and decay vertices the relative cross-sections were measured separately for singly (Λc +, ∑c+, ∑c +*) and doubly (∑c++, ∑ c++*) charged baryons. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract: A measurement of ?c+ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a subsample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector, exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short-lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in A+ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of 27 GeV, the product ?(?c+)/?(CC) × BR(?c+ › 3p) was measured to be (0.37 ± 0.10(stat) ± 0.02(syst)) × 10-2, while the values of (1.54 ± 0.35(stat) ± 0.18(syst)) × 10-2 and of 0.24 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.04(syst) were obtained for ?(?c+)/?(CC) and BR(?c+ › 3p), respectively. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We report on a search for associated charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions in the CHORUS experiment, based on the visual observation of charmed-particle decays. The search differs from those carried out so far in which the production of cc has been inferred from measurements of events with two or three muons in the final state, resulting from the decay of charmed hadrons. One event with a double charm-decay topology has been found and a corresponding background of 0.04 events has been evaluated. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
