Abstract

We study inclusive $��_c^{\pm}$-baryon production in $pp$ collisions in the general-mass variable-flavor number scheme and compare with data from the LHCb, ALICE and CMS collaborations. Abstract

We study inclusive $B$-meson production in $pp$ collisions at the LHC and compare experimental data with predictions of the general-mass variable-flavour-number scheme at next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD. We find almost perfect agreement provided that the factorization scale parameters and the parton distribution functions are chosen appropriately.

Abstract

We calculate the next-to-leading-order cross section for the inclusive production of $\Lambda_b$ baryons in pp collisions in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme. We use realistic evolved non-perturbative fragmentation functions obtained from fits to B-meson production in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation and compare our results for transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions with recent experimental data from the CMS and the LHCb collaborations at the CERN LHC. We find satisfactory agreement in general, with some indication for the need to modify the available fragmentation functions at larger values of the scale variable.

Abstract

We present predictions for the prompt-neutrino flux arising from the decay of charmed mesons and baryons produced by the interactions of high-energy cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere, making use of a QCD approach on the basis of the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme for the description of charm hadroproduction at NLO, complemented by a consistent set of fragmentation functions. We compare the theoretical results to those already obtained by our and other groups with different theoretical approaches. We provide comparisons with the experimental results obtained by the IceCube Collaboration in two different analyses and we discuss the implications for parton distribution functions.

Abstract

We present the first calculation of inclusive jet photoproduction with next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) contributions, obtained from a unified threshold resummation formalism. The leading coefficients for direct photoproduction are computed analytically. Together with the coefficients pertinent to parton-parton scattering, they are shown to agree with those appearing in our full next-to-leading order calculations. For hadron-hadron scattering, numerical agreement is found with a previous calculation of jet production at the Tevatron. We show that the direct and resolved NNLO contributions considerably improve the description of final ZEUS data on jet photoproduction and that the error on the determination of the strong coupling constant is significantly reduced., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $\alpha_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC. Abstract

We have calculated the next-to-leading order cross sections for the inclusive production of D*-mesons in ep collisions at HERA for finite, although very small Q2. In this Q2-range, the same approximations as for photoproduction can be used. Our calculation is performed in the general-mass variable-flavour-number scheme. In this approach, large logarithms of the charm transverse momentum are resummed and finite terms depending on m^2/p_T^2 are kept in the hard scattering cross sections. The theoretical results are compared with recent data from the ZEUS collaboration at HERA. On average, we find good agreement., 10 pages

Abstract

We perform next-to-leading order calculations of the single-diffractive and non-diffractive cross sections for dijet production in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron. By comparing their ratio to the data published by the CDF collaboration for two different center-of-mass energies, we deduce the rapidity-gap survival probability as a function of the momentum fraction of the parton in the antiproton. Assuming Regge factorization, this probability can be interpreted as a suppression factor for the diffractive structure function measured in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA. In contrast to the observations for photoproduction, the suppression factor in proton-antiproton collisions depends on the momentum fraction of the parton in the Pomeron even at next-to-leading order., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

CERN-DESY workshop on "HERA and the LHC" DESY-PROC-2009-02; ISBN 978-3-935702-32-4; ISSN 1435-8077; International audience; A proper inclusion of heavy quark mass effects in Parton Distribution Function fits has proved crucial. We present a review these effects in DIS and their impact on global analyses and lay out all elements of a properly defined general mass variable flavor number scheme (GM VFNS) that are shared by all modern formulations of the problem. We also report about progress in a number of theoretical problems related to exclusive measurements of heavy flavors. These topics include fragmentation functions for charmed mesons including finite mass effects, fragmentation functions including non-perturbative corrections based on an effective QCD coupling, a discussion of the status of higherorder calculations for top quark production and for polarized structure functions, heavy quark and quarkonium production in the Regge limit, double heavy baryon production, tests of time reversal and CP symmetry in lamdab decays, as well as a study of the general properties of massive exotic hadrons that will be relevant for an understanding of their detection at the LHC.

Abstract

The HERA electron--proton collider has collected 100 pb$^{-1}$ of data since its start-up in 1992, and recently moved into a high-luminosity operation mode, with upgraded detectors, aiming to increase the total integrated luminosity per experiment to more than 500 pb$^{-1}$. HERA has been a machine of excellence for the study of QCD and the structure of the proton. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will collide protons with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, will be completed at CERN in 2007. The main mission of the LHC is to discover and study the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking, possibly via the discovery of the Higgs particle, and search for new physics in the TeV energy scale, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Besides these goals, the LHC will also make a substantial number of precision measurements and will offer a new regime to study the strong force via perturbative QCD processes and diffraction. For the full LHC physics programme a good understanding of QCD phenomena and the structure function of the proton is essential. Therefore, in March 2004, a one-year-long workshop started to study the implications of HERA on LHC physics. This included proposing new measurements to be made at HERA, extracting the maximum information from the available data, and developing/improving the theoretical and experimental tools. Abstract

The HERA electron--proton collider has collected 100 pb$^{-1}$ of data since its start-up in 1992, and recently moved into a high-luminosity operation mode, with upgraded detectors, aiming to increase the total integrated luminosity per experiment to more than 500 pb$^{-1}$. HERA has been a machine of excellence for the study of QCD and the structure of the proton. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will collide protons with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, will be completed at CERN in 2007. The main mission of the LHC is to discover and study the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking, possibly via the discovery of the Higgs particle, and search for new physics in the TeV energy scale, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Besides these goals, the LHC will also make a substantial number of precision measurements and will offer a new regime to study the strong force via perturbative QCD processes and diffraction. For the full LHC physics programme a good understanding of QCD phenomena and the structure function of the proton is essential. Therefore, in March 2004, a one-year-long workshop started to study the implications of HERA on LHC physics. This included proposing new measurements to be made at HERA, extracting the maximum information from the available data, and developing/improving the theoretical and experimental tools. Abstract

We present recent experimental data from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA for diffractive dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and photoproduction and compare them with next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD predictions using diffractive parton densities. While good agreement is found for DIS, the dijet photoproduction data are overestimated by the NLO theory, showing that factorization breaking occurs at this order. While this is expected theoretically for resolved photoproduction, the fact that the data are better described by a global suppression of direct and resolved contribution by about a factor of two comes as a surprise. We therefore discuss in some detail the factorization scheme and scale dependence between direct and resolved contributions and propose a new factorization scheme for diffractive dijet photoproduction., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, HERA-LHC workshop

We determine the relevant colour-octet charmonium matrix elements from fits to CDF data on prompt charmonium hadroproduction and to CLEO data on charmonium production from B-meson decay. Abstract

Using a theoretical framework based on the next-to-leading order QCD-improved effective Hamiltonian and a factorization Ansatz for the hadronic matrix elements of the four-quark operators, we reassess branching fractions in two-body non-leptonic decays $B \to PP, PV, VV$, involving the lowest lying light pseudoscalar $(P)$ and vector $(V)$ mesons in the standard model. Using the sensitivity of the decay rates on the effective number of colors, $N_c$, as a criterion of theoretical predictivity, we classify all the current-current (tree) and penguin transitions in five different classes. The recently measured charmless two-body $B \to PP$ decays $(B^+ \to K^+ \eta^\prime, B^0 \to K^0 \eta^\prime, B^0 \to K^+\pi^-, B^+ \to \pi^+ K^0$ and charge conjugates) are dominated by the $N_c$-stable QCD penguins (class-IV transitions) and their estimates are consistent with data. The measured charmless $B \to PV$ $(B^+ \to \omega K^+, ~B^+ \to \omega h^+)$ and $B\to VV$ transition $(B \to \phi K^*)$, on the other hand, belong to the penguin (class-V) and tree (class-III) transitions. The class-V penguin transitions are in general more difficult to predict. We propose a number of tests of the factorization framework in terms of the ratios of branching ratios for some selected $B \to h_1 h_2$ decays involving light hadrons $h_1$ and $h_2$, which depend only moderately on the form factors. We also propose a set of measurements to determine the effective coefficients of the current-current and QCD penguin operators. The potential impact of $B \to h_1 h_2$ decays on the CKM phenomenology is emphasized by analyzing a number of decay rates in the factorization framework.

Abstract

We describe the physics potential of $e^+e^-$ linear colliders in this report. These machines are planned to operate in the first phase at a center-of --mass energy of 500 GeV, before being scaled up to about 1 TeV. In the second phase of the operation, a final energy of about 2 TeV is expected. The machines will allow us to perform precision tests of the heavy particles in the Standard Model, the top quark and the electroweak bosons. They are ideal facilities for exploring the properties of Higgs particles, in particular in the intermediate mass range. New vector bosons and novel matter particles in extended gauge theories can be searched for and studied thoroughly. The machines provide unique opportunities for the discovery of particles in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the spectrum of Higgs particles, the supersymmetric partners of the electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons, and of the matter particles. High precision analyses of their properties and interactions will allow for extrapolations to energy scales close to the Planck scale where gravity becomes significant. In alternative scenarios, like compositeness models, novel matter particles and interactions can be discovered and investigated in the energy range above the existing colliders up to the TeV scale. Whatever scenario is realized in Nature, the discovery potential of $e^+e^-$ linear colliders and the high-precision with which the properties of particles and their interactions can be analysed, define an exciting physics programme complementary to hadron machines., 103 pages, Latex

Abstract

We present new sets of fragmentation functions for D^{*+-} mesons, both at leading and next-to-leading order. They are determined by fitting LEP1 data on inclusive D^{*+-} production in e^+e^- annihilation. In one of the sets, we take the charm-quark fragmentation function to be of the form proposed by Peterson et al. and thus obtain updated values of the epsilon_c parameter and the c -> D^{*+} branching ratio. The new fragmentation functions lead to an excellent description of other e^+e^- data with centre-of-mass energies between 10 and 35 GeV. Abstract

The influence of strong and electroweak penguin amplitudes in $B/ \bar B \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-$ is investigated in connection with the determination of the unitarity triangle angle $\alpha$ of the CKM matrix. A relation between the observable asymmetry, the angle $\alpha$, and the penguin amplitude is established. A model calculation of the penguin amplitude shows that the CP asymmetry in $B^{0}\rightarrow \pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decays is only mildly influenced by the penguin amplitudes. Experimental limits on pure penguin and penguin dominated processes are consistent with the model. This information also suggests in a rather model independent way that penguin amplitudes will not be a serious complicating factor in the determination of $\alpha$ from the $\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ time dependent asymmetry., Comment: 15 pages, Latex, three figures available upon request

Abstract

We present new sets of fragmentation functions for charged pions and kaons, both at leading and next-to-leading order. They are fitted to data on inclusive charged-hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation taken by TPC at PEP ($\sqrt s=29$~GeV) and to similar data by ALEPH at LEP, who discriminated between events with charm, bottom, and light- flavour fragmentation in their charged-hadron sample. We treat all partons independently and to properly incorporate the charm and bottom thresholds. Due to the sizeable energy gap between PEP and LEP, we are sensitive to the scaling violation in the fragmentation process, which allows us to extract a value for the asymptotic scale parameter of QCD, $\Lambda$. Recent data on inclusive charged-hadron production in tagged three-jet events by OPAL and similar data for longitudinal electron polarization by ALEPH allow us to pin down the gluon fragmentation functions. Our new fragmentation functions lead to an excellent description of a multitude of other $e^+e^-$ data on inclusive charged-hadron production, ranging from $\sqrt s=5.2$~GeV to LEP energy. In addition, they agree nicely with the transverse-momentum spectra of single charged hadrons measured by H1 and ZEUS in photoproduction at the $ep$ collider HERA, which represents a nontrivial check of the factorization theorem of the QCD-improved parton model., Comment: 22 pages, latex, 13 compressed ps figures in separate file

Abstract

We calculate CP-violating rates and asymmetry parameters in charged and neutral $B\to ����, ��K$ and $\bar K K$ decays arising from the interference of tree and penguin (strong and electroweak) amplitudes with different strong and CKM phases. The perturbative strong (electroweak) phases develop at order $��_s$ ($��_{em}$) from absorptive parts of one-loop matrix elements of the next-to-leading (leading) logarithm corrected effective Hamiltonian. The BSW model is used to estimate the hadronic matrix elements. Based on this model, we find that the effect of strong phases and penguins is substantial in most channels, drastic in many. However, a measurement of the time dependence parameter $a_{��+��'}$ in the $��^+��^-$ channel is only influenced at the 20\% level by the complication of the penguins. Recent flavor sum rules developed for $B^{0,\pm} \rightarrow ����, ��K, K \bar K$ amplitudes are tested in this model. Abstract

The influence of strong and electroweak penguin amplitudes in $B/ \bar B \rightarrow ��^+��^-$ is investigated in connection with the determination of the unitarity triangle angle $��$ of the CKM matrix. A relation between the observable asymmetry, the angle $��$, and the penguin amplitude is established. A model calculation of the penguin amplitude shows that the CP asymmetry in $B^{0}\rightarrow ��^{+}��^{-}$ decays is only mildly influenced by the penguin amplitudes. Experimental limits on pure penguin and penguin dominated processes are consistent with the model. This information also suggests in a rather model independent way that penguin amplitudes will not be a serious complicating factor in the determination of $��$ from the $��^{+}��^{-}$ time dependent asymmetry., 15 pages, Latex, three figures available upon request

Abstract

This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100) fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.
