Search

We study the mirror world with dark matter arising from the thermal freeze-out of the lightest, stable mirror particle -- the mirror electron. The dark matter abundance is achieved for mirror electrons of mass 225 GeV, fixing the mirror electroweak scale near $10^8$ GeV. This highly predictive scenario is realized by an axion that acts as a portal between the two sectors through its coupling to the QCD and mirror QCD sectors. The axion is more massive than the standard QCD axion due to additional contributions from mirror strong dynamics. Still, the strong CP problem is solved by this "heavy" axion due to the alignment of the QCD and mirror QCD potentials. Mirror entropy is transferred into the Standard Model sector via the axion portal, which alleviates overproduction of dark radiation from mirror glueball decays. This mirror scenario has a variety of signals: (1) primordial gravitational waves from the first-order mirror QCD phase transition occurring at a temperature near 35 GeV, (2) effects on large-scale structure from dark matter self-interactions from mirror QED, (3) dark radiation affecting the cosmic microwave background, and (4) the rare kaon decay, $K^+ \rightarrow (\pi^+ + \rm{axion})$. The Standard Model of Particle Physics cannot explain the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. This observation is a clear sign of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The standard model Higgs quartic coupling vanishes at $(10^{9}-10^{13})$ GeV. We study $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ theories that incorporate the Higgs Parity mechanism, where this becomes the scale of Left-Right symmetry breaking, $v_R$. Furthermore, these theories solve the strong CP problem and predict three right-handed neutrinos. We introduce cosmologies where $SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge interactions produce right-handed neutrinos via the freeze-out or freeze-in mechanisms. In both cases, we find the parameter space where the lightest right-handed neutrino is dark matter and the decay of a heavier one creates the baryon asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis. A theory of flavor is constructed that naturally accounts for the lightness and stability of the right-handed neutrino dark matter, while maintaining sufficient baryon asymmetry. The dark matter abundance and successful natural leptogenesis require $v_R$ to be in the range $(10^{10}-10^{13})$ GeV for freeze-out, in remarkable agreement with the scale where the Higgs quartic coupling vanishes, whereas freeze-in requires $v_R \gtrsim 10^9$ GeV. The allowed parameter space can be probed by the warmness of dark matter, precise determinations of the top quark mass and QCD coupling by future colliders and lattice computations, and measurement of the neutrino mass hierarchy., Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures

Detection of electron recoils by dark matter (DM) may reveal the structure of the dark sector. We consider a scenario where a heavier DM particle inelastically scatters off an electron and is converted into a lighter DM particle. A small mass difference between the two DM particles is transferred into electron recoil energy. We investigate the DM-electron interaction mediated by a massive dark photon and evaluate the inelastic DM scattering rate, taking account of the atomic structure. It is found that the scattering rate is significantly enhanced because of the small mass splitting, which allows for a small momentum transfer matched with the size of the electron wave function. We show that there exists a viable parameter space which explains the excess of electron recoil events around 2-3 keV recently reported by the XENON1T experiment., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, version to be published in Physics Letters B

Adding an axion-like particle (ALP) to the Standard Model, with a field velocity in the early universe, simultaneously explains the observed baryon and dark matter densities. This requires one or more couplings between the ALP and photons, nucleons, and/or electrons that are predicted as functions of the ALP mass. These predictions arise because the ratio of dark matter to baryon densities is independent of the ALP field velocity, allowing a correlation between the ALP mass, $m_a$, and decay constant, $f_a$. The predicted couplings are orders of magnitude larger than those for the QCD axion and for dark matter from the conventional ALP misalignment mechanism. The vanishing of the Higgs quartic coupling of the Standard Model at high energies may be explained by spontaneous breaking of Higgs Parity. Taking Higgs Parity to originate from the Left-Right symmetry of the $SO(10)$ gauge group, leads to a new scheme for precision gauge coupling unification that is consistent with proton decay. We compute the relevant running of couplings and threshold corrections to allow a precise correlation among Standard Model parameters. The scheme has a built-in solution for obtaining a realistic value for $m_b/m_\tau$, which further improves the precision from gauge coupling unification, allowing the QCD coupling constant to be predicted to the level of 1 % or, alternatively, the top quark mass to 0.2 %. Future measurements of these parameters may significantly constrain the detailed structure of the theory. We also study an $SO(10)$ embedding of quark and lepton masses, showing how large neutrino mixing is compatible with small quark mixing, and predict a normal neutrino mass hierarchy. The twin Higgs mechanism is a solution to the little hierarchy problem in which the top partner is neutral under the Standard Model (SM) gauge group. The simplest mirror twin Higgs (MTH) model -- where a $\mathbf{Z}_2$ symmetry copies each SM particle -- has too many relativistic degrees of freedom to be consistent with cosmological observations. We demonstrate that MTH models can have an observationally viable cosmology if the twin mass spectrum leads to twin neutrino decoupling before the SM and twin QCD phase transitions. Our solution requires the twin photon to have a mass of $\sim 20$ MeV and kinetically mix with the SM photon to mediate entropy transfer from the twin sector to the SM. This twin photon can be robustly discovered or excluded by future experiments. An exact spacetime parity replicates the $SU(2) \times U(1)$ electroweak interaction, the Higgs boson $H$, and the matter of the Standard Model. This "Higgs Parity" and the mirror electroweak symmetry are spontaneously broken at scale $v' = \left\langle{H'} \right\rangle \gg \left\langle{H}\right\rangle$, yielding the Standard Model below $v'$ with a quartic coupling that essentially vanishes at $v'$: $\lambda_{SM}(v') \sim 10^{-3}$. The strong CP problem is solved as Higgs parity forces the masses of mirror quarks and ordinary quarks to have opposite phases. Dark matter is composed of mirror electrons, $e'$, stabilized by unbroken mirror electromagnetism. These interact with Standard Model particles via kinetic mixing between the photon and the mirror photon, which arises at four-loop level and is a firm prediction of the theory. Physics below $v'$, including the mass and interaction of $e'$ dark matter, is described by $\textit{one fewer parameter}$ than in the Standard Model. The allowed range of $m_{e'}$ is determined by uncertainties in $(\alpha_s, m_t, m_h)$, so that future precision measurements of these will be correlated with the direct detection rate of $e'$ dark matter, which, together with the neutron electric dipole moment, will probe the entire parameter space., Comment: 29 pages, 5 figures. We study interactions of cosmological relics, $X$, of mass $m$ and electric charge $qe$ in the galaxy, including thermalization with the interstellar medium, diffusion through inhomogeneous magnetic fields and Fermi acceleration by supernova shock waves. We find that for $m \mathop{}_{\textstyle \sim}^{\textstyle <} 10^{10} q \; ~{\rm GeV}$, there is a large flux of accelerated $X$ in the disk today, with a momentum distribution $\propto 1/p^{2.5}$ extending to $(\beta p)_{max} \sim 5 \times10^4 q \; ~{\rm GeV}$. Even though acceleration in supernova shocks is efficient, ejecting $X$ from the galaxy, $X$ are continually replenished by diffusion into the disk from the halo or confinement region. For $m \mathop{}_{\textstyle \sim}^{\textstyle >} 10^{10} q \; ~{\rm GeV}$, $X$ cannot be accelerated above the escape velocity within the lifetime of the shock. The accelerated $X$ form a component of cosmic rays that can easily reach underground detectors, as well as deposit energies above thresholds, enhancing signals in various experiments. We find that nuclear/electron recoil experiments place very stringent bounds on $X$ at low $q$; for example, $X$ as dark matter is excluded for $q$ above $10^{-9}$ for any $m$. For larger $q$, stringent bounds on the fraction of dark matter that can be $X$ are set by Cherenkov and ionization detectors. Nevertheless, very small $q$ is highly motivated by the kinetic mixing portal, and we identify regions of $(m,q)$ that can be probed by future experiments., Comment: 56 pages, 20 figures. Vector bosons heavier than $10^{-22}$ eV can be viable dark matter candidates with distinctive experimental signatures. Ultralight dark matter generally requires a non-thermal origin to achieve the observed density, while still behaving like a pressureless fluid at late times. We show that such a production mechanism naturally occurs for vectors whose mass originates from a dark Higgs. If the dark Higgs has a large field value after inflation, the energy in the Higgs field can be efficiently transferred to vectors through parametric resonance. Computing the resulting abundance and spectra requires careful treatment of the transverse and longitudinal components, whose dynamics are governed by distinct differential equations. We study these equations in detail and find that the mass of the vector may be as low as $10 ^{ - 18 }$ eV, while making up the dominant dark matter abundance. In a Mirror Twin World with a maximally symmetric Higgs sector the little hierarchy of the Standard Model can be significantly mitigated, perhaps displacing the cutoff scale above the LHC reach. We show that consistency with observations requires that the Z2 parity exchanging the Standard Model with its mirror be broken in the Yukawa couplings. A minimal such effective field theory, with this sole Z2 breaking, can generate the Z2 breaking in the Higgs sector necessary for the Twin Higgs mechanism. The theory has constrained and correlated signals in Higgs decays, direct Dark Matter Detection and Dark Radiation, all within reach of foreseen experiments, over a region of parameter space where the fine-tuning for the electroweak scale is 10-50%. For dark matter, both mirror neutrons and a variety of self-interacting mirror atoms are considered. Perturbative supersymmetric gauge coupling unification is possible in six theories where complete SU(5) TeV-scale multiplets of vector matter account for the size of the reported $750~{\rm GeV}$ diphoton resonance, interpreted as a singlet multiplet $S = (s+ia)/\sqrt{2}$. One of these has a full generation of vector matter and a unified gauge coupling $\alpha_G \sim 1$. The diphoton signal rate is enhanced by loops of vector squarks and sleptons, especially when the trilinear $A$ couplings are large. If the $SH_u H_d$ coupling is absent, both $s$ and $a$ can contribute to the resonance, which may then have a large apparent width if the mass splitting from $s$ and $a$ arises from loops of vector matter. The width depends sensitively on $A$ parameters and phases of the vector squark and slepton masses. Vector quarks and/or squarks are expected to be in reach of the LHC. If the $SH_uH_d$ coupling is present, $a$ leads to a narrow diphoton resonance, while a second resonance with decays $s \rightarrow hh, W^+ W^-,ZZ$ is likely to be discovered at future LHC runs. The diphoton excesses at 750 GeV seen in the LHC data may be the first hint for new physics at the TeV scale. We discuss variations of the model considered earlier, in which one or more diphoton excesses arise from composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons (hidden pions) associated with new strong dynamics at the TeV scale. We study the case in which the 750 GeV excess arises from a unique hidden pion leading to a diphoton final state as well as the case in which it arises from one of the hidden pions decaying into diphotons. We consider SU(N), SO(N), and Sp(N) gauge groups for the strong dynamics and find that SO(N) and Sp(N) models give extra hidden pions beyond those in the SU(N) models, which can be used to discriminate among models., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures; discussion on would-be stable particles added

An interesting possibility for dark matter is a scalar particle of mass of order 10 MeV-1 GeV, interacting with a U(1) gauge boson (dark photon) which mixes with the photon. We present a simple and natural model realizing this possibility. The dark matter arises as a composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (dark pion) in a non-Abelian gauge sector, which also gives a mass to the dark photon. For a fixed non-Abelian gauge group, SU(N), and a U(1) charge of the constituent dark quarks, the model has only three free parameters: the dynamical scale of the non-Abelian gauge theory, the gauge coupling of the dark photon, and the mixing parameter between the dark and standard model photons. In particular, the gauge symmetry of the model does not allow any mass term for the dark quarks, and stability of the dark pion is understood as a result of an accidental global symmetry. The model has a significant parameter space in which thermal relic dark pions comprise all of the dark matter, consistently with all experimental and cosmological constraints. In a corner of the parameter space, the discrepancy of the muon g-2 between experiments and the standard model prediction can also be ameliorated due to a loop contribution of the dark photon. Smoking-gun signatures of the model include a monophoton signal from the e+ e- collision into a photon and a "dark rho meson." We study a simple model in which the recently reported 750 GeV diphoton excess arises from a composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson---hidden pion---produced by gluon fusion and decaying into two photons. The model only introduces an extra hidden gauge group at the TeV scale with a vectorlike quark in the bifundamental representation of the hidden and standard model gauge groups. We calculate the masses of all the hidden pions and analyze their experimental signatures and constraints. We find that two colored hidden pions must be near the current experimental limits, and hence are probed in the near future. We study physics of would-be stable particles---the composite states that do not decay purely by the hidden and standard model gauge dynamics---in detail, including constraints from cosmology. We discuss possible theoretical structures above the TeV scale, e.g. conformal dynamics and supersymmetry, and their phenomenological implications. We also discuss an extension of the minimal model in which there is an extra hidden quark that is singlet under the standard model and has a mass smaller than the hidden dynamical scale. This provides two standard model singlet hidden pions that can both be viewed as diphoton/diboson resonances produced by gluon fusion. A recent signal of 750 GeV diphotons at the LHC can be explained within the framework of supersymmetric unification by the introduction of vector quarks and leptons with Yukawa couplings to a singlet S that describes the 750 GeV resonance. We study the most general set of theories that allow successful gauge coupling unification, and find that these Yukawa couplings are severely constrained by renormalization group behavior: they are independent of ultraviolet physics and flow to values at the TeV scale that we calculate precisely. As a consequence the vector quarks and leptons must be light; typically in the region of 375 GeV to 700 GeV, and in certain cases up to 1 TeV. The 750 GeV resonance may have a width less than the experimental resolution; alternatively, with the mass splitting between scalar and pseudoscalar components of S arising from one-loop diagrams involving vector fermions, we compute an apparent width of 10s of GeV., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures; to appear in JHEP

Recently the ATLAS experiment has reported 3.0 sigma excess in an on-Z signal region in searches for supersymmetric particles. We find that the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model can explain this excess by the production of gluinos which mainly decay via $\tilde{g} \to g \tilde{\chi}^0_{2,3} \to g Z \tilde{\chi}^0_{1}$ where $\tilde{\chi}^0_{2,3}$ and $\tilde{\chi}^0_1$ are the Higgsino and the singlino-like neutralinos, respectively. We show that the observed dark matter density is explained by the thermal relic density of the singlino-like neutralino, simultaneously. We propose a new explanation for excess events observed in the search for a high-mass resonance decaying into dibosons by the ATLAS experiment. The resonance is identified as a composite spin-$0$ particle that couples to the Standard Model gauge bosons via dimension-5 operators. The excess events can be explained if the dimension-5 operators are suppressed by a mass scale of ${\cal O}(1$-$10$) TeV. We also construct a model of hidden strong gauge dynamics which realizes the spin-$0$ particle as its lightest composite state, with appropriate couplings to Standard Model gauge bosons., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Various types of electroweak-interacting particles, which have non-trivial charges under the $\mathrm{SU}(2)_L \times \mathrm{U}(1)_Y$ gauge symmetry, appear in various extensions of the Standard Model. These particles are good targets of future lepton colliders, such as the International Linear Collider (ILC), the Compact LInear Collider (CLIC) and the Future Circular Collider of electrons and positrons (FCC-ee). An advantage of the experiments is that, even if their beam energies are below the threshold of the production of the new particles, quantum effects of the particles can be detected through high precision measurements. We estimate the capability of future lepton colliders to probe electroweak-interacting particles through the quantum effects, with particular focus on the wino, the Higgsino and the so-called minimal dark matters, and found that a particle whose mass is greater than the beam energy by 100-1000 GeV is detectable by measuring di-fermion production cross sections with $O(0.1)$\% accuracy. In addition, with the use of the same analysis, we also discuss the sensitivity of the future colliders to model independent higher dimensional operators, and found that the cutoff scales corresponding to the operators can be probed up to a few ten TeV.

We present a new focus point supersymemtry breaking scenario based on the supersymmetric $E_7$ non-linear sigma model. In this non-linear sigma model, squarks and sleptons are identified with (pseudo) Nambu-Goldstone bosons. Their masses are generated only radiatively through gauge and yukawa interactions, and they are much smaller than the gravitino and gaugino masses at a high energy scale. On the other hand, Higgs doublets belong to matter multiplets and hence may have unsuppressed supersymmetry-breaking soft masses. We consider their masses to be equal to the gravitino mass at the high energy scale, assuming the minimal Kahler potential for Higgs doublets. We show that the fine-tuning measure of the electroweak symmetry breaking scale is reduced significantly to $\Delta=30-70$, if the ratio of the gravitino mass to the gaugino mass is around $5/4$. Also, the prospects of the discovery/exclusion of supersymmetric particles at the Large Hadron Collider and dark matter direct detection experiments are discussed., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

Gaugino mediation is very attractive since it is free from the serious flavor problem in the supersymmetric standard model. We show that the observed Higgs boson mass at around 125 GeV and the anomaly of the muon g-2 can be easily explained in gaugino mediation models. It should be noted that no dangerous CP violating phases are generated in our framework. Furthermore, there are large parameter regions which can be tested not only at the planned International Linear Collider but also at the coming 13-14 TeV Large Hadron Collider., Comment: 24 pages, 2 figures

The large value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio in the cosmic microwave background radiation reported by the BICEP2 collaboration gives strong impact on models of supersymmetry (SUSY). The large ratio indicates inflation with a high-energy scale and thus a high reheating temperature in general, and various SUSY models suffer from the serious gravitino and Polonyi problems. In this article, we discuss a class of the high-scale SUSY breaking models which are completely free from those problems. With especially focusing on the dark matter relic abundance, we examine how the BICEP2 result narrows down the parameter space of the models, assuming the simplest chaotic inflation model. We find that the mass of the dark matter is predicted to be less than about 1 TeV thanks to the non-thermal production in the early universe through the decay of abundant gravitinos produced after the reheating process. The measurement of a large tensor-to-scalar ratio by the BICEP2 experiment, r = 0.20 (-0.05)(+0.07), severely restricts the landscape of viable inflationary models and shifts attention once more towards models featuring large inflaton field values. In this context, chaotic inflation based on a fractional power-law potential that is dynamically generated by the dynamics of a strongly coupled supersymmetric gauge theory appears to be particularly attractive. We revisit this class of inflation models and find that, in the light of the BICEP2 measurement, models with a non-minimal gauge group behind the dynamical model seem to be disfavored, while the model with the simplest group, i.e. SU(2), is consistent with all results. The high-scale supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking scenario is now attracting many attentions, because it is consistent with almost all experiments of particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology performed so far: e.g. it is possible to explain the Higgs mass of about 126GeV and contains WIMP dark matter candidates. In the scenario, gauginos are predicted to be around the TeV scale, and thus within a kinematically accessible range of near future experiments. Calculation of the thermal relic abundance for gaugino (bino or wino) dark matter is then of particular importance in order to clarify its mass consistent with cosmology and to determine future directions for exploring the high-scale SUSY breaking scenario. In this article, we calculate the abundance of the gaugino dark matter, with especially focusing on various coannihilations between gauginos, which has not been extensively studied so far. Our calculation involves the Sommerfeld effect on wino and gluino annihilations, which is known to give significant contributions to their cross sections. Based on obtained results, we discuss some implications to gaugino searches at collider and indirect detection experiments of dark matter., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

In this paper, we consider phenomenology of a model with an $L_\mu-L_\tau$ gauge symmetry. Since the muon couples to the $L_\mu-L_\tau$ gauge boson (called $Z''$ boson), its contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment (muon g-2) can account for the discrepancy between the standard model prediction and the experimental measurements. On the other hand, the $Z''$ boson does not interact with the electron and quarks, and hence there are no strong constraints from collider experiments even if the $Z''$ boson mass is of the order of the electroweak scale. We show an allowed region of a parameter space in the $L_\mu-L_\tau$ symmetric model, taking into account consistency with the electroweak precision measurements as well as the muon g-2. We study the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) phenomenology, and show that the current and future data would probe the interesting parameter space for this model., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures

We take a closer look at the gaugino masses in the context of pure gravity mediation models/minimal split SUSY models. We see that the gaugino mass spectrum has a richer structure in the presence of vector-like matter fields even when they couple to the supersymmetry breaking sector only through Planck suppressed operators. For example, the gluino mass can be much lighter than in anomaly mediation, enhancing the detectability of the gluino at the LHC experiments. The rich gaugino spectrum also allows new possibilities for dark matter scenarios such as the bino-wino co-annihilation, bino-gluino co-annihilation, or even wino-gluino co-annihilation scenarios, which affects future collider experiments as well as dark matter search experiments., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, v2 references and explanations added

Present and future expected limits on interactions between dark matter and various quarks are thoroughly investigated in a model-independent way. In particular, the constraints on the interactions from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment are carefully considered with focusing on mono jet + missing transverse energy, mono b-jet + missing transverse energy, and top quark(s) + missing transverse energy channels. Model-independent upper limits (expected limits) on the cross section times acceptance for non-standard model events are derived at 7 TeV (8 or 14 TeV) running of the LHC experiment. With assuming that the dark matter is a singlet real scalar or a singlet Majorana fermion, we also put constraints on several operators describing its interactions with up, down, strange, charm, bottom and top quarks. We discuss the seesaw mechanism which includes the minimum number of parameters for successful leptogenesis and three neutrino oscillations in the spirit of Occam's razor. We show that models with two right-handed neutrinos with two texture zeros supported by Occam's razor cannot fit the observed neutrino parameters consistently for the normal light neutrino mass hierarchy. For the inverted light neutrino mass hierarchy, on the other hand, we find that the models can fit the observed neutrino parameters consistently. Besides, we show that the model predicts the maximal Dirac CP-phase of the neutrino mixing matrix in the measurable range in the foreseeable future for the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. We also show that the predicted effective Majorana neutrino mass responsible for the neutrinoless double beta decay is around 50 meV which is also within reach of future experiments., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures; v2 reference and explanation added

Vector-like quarks are introduced in various new physics models beyond the standard model (SM) at the TeV scale. We especially consider the case that the quark is singlet (triplet) under the SU(2)$_L$ (SU(3)$_c$) gauge group and couples only to the third generation quarks of the SM. The vector-like quark of this kind is often called a top partner. The top partoner $t_p$ decays into $bW, tZ$ and $th$. In the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, the top partner has been searched in the final states of $bW$ and $tZ$, while the search based on the decay mode $t_p\to th$ has not been started yet. However, the decay into $th$ is important since it is significantly enhanced if some strong dynamics exists in the TeV scale. In the presence of a light higgs boson, the decay mode $t_p\to th$ followed by $h\to b\bar{b}$ produces three bottom quarks. We study the sensitivity for the top partner using multi-b-jet events at the 8 TeV run of the LHC experiment. The multi-b-jet eventss turn out to play a complementary role to the existing $t_p\rightarrow bW$ and $tZ$ searches by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, 10 Tables

In the framework of the little higgs scenario, coupling constants of several interactions are related to each other to guarantee the stability of the higgs boson mass at one-loop level. This relation is called the little higgs mechanism. We discuss how accurately the relation can be tested at future e+e- colliders, with especially focusing on the top sector of the scenario using a method of effective lagrangian. In order to test the mechanism at the top sector, it is important to measure the Yukawa coupling of the top partner. We consider higgs associated production and threshold production of the top partner, and find that the mechanism can be tested precisely using the associate production when the center of mass energy is large enough. We discuss a test of the CDF dijet anomaly at the LHC. The recent observed dijet mass peak at the CDF is well fitted by a new particle with a mass of around 150 GeV, which decays into two jets. In this paper, we focus on only $Wjj$ signal to avoid model dependence, and comprehensively study the LHC discovery/exclusion reach. We found almost all the models are inconsistent with the result of the LHC, unless only valence quarks contribute the new process.
