Search

Two particular ratios related to mesons are proposed for the study of the conformal window in $SU(3)$ gauge theory and fundamental fermions. Lattice and other studies indicate that the lower end, $N_f^*$, is at around 7 - 13 flavors which is a wide range without a clear consensus. Here we propose the decay constant to mass ratios of mesons, $f_{PS,V} / m_V$, as a proxy since below the conformal window lattice studies have shown that they are largely $N_f$-independent while at the upper end of the conformal window they are vanishing. The drop from the non-zero constant value to zero at $N_f = 16.5$ might be indicative of $N_f^*$. We compute $f_V / m_V$ to N$^3$LO and $f_{PS} / m_V$ to NNLO order in (p)NRQCD. The results are unambiguously reliable just below $N_f = 16.5$, hence the results are expanded \'a la Banks-Zaks in $\varepsilon = 16.5 - N_f$. The convergence properties of the series and matching with the non-perturbative infinite volume, continuum and chiral extrapolated lattice results at $N_f = 10$ suggest that the perturbative results might be reliable down to $N_f = 12$. The $f_\varrho / m_\varrho$ ratio is calculated at N$^3$LO order within perturbative (p)NRQCD with $N_f$ flavors of mass degenerate fermions. The massless limit of the ratio is expanded \'a la Banks-Zaks in $\epsilon = 16.5 - N_f$ leading to reliable predictions close to the upper end of the conformal window. The comparison of the NNLO and N$^3$LO results indicate that the Banks-Zaks expansion may be reliable down to twelve flavors. Previous lattice calculations combined with the KSRF relations provide us with the same ratio for the range $2 \leq N_f \leq 10$. Assuming a monotonous dependence on $N_f$ leads to an estimate for the lower end of the conformal window, $N_f^* \simeq 12$, by matching the non-perturbative and our perturbative results. In any case an abrupt change is observed in $f_\varrho / m_\varrho$ at twelve flavors. As a cross-check we also consider the $f_\pi / m_\varrho$ ratio for which lattice results are also available. The perturbative calculation at present is only at the NNLO level which is insufficient for a reliable and robust matching between the low $N_f$ and high $N_f$ regions. Nonetheless, using the relative size of the N$^3$LO correction of $f_\varrho / m_\varrho$ for estimating the same for $f_\pi / m_\varrho$ leads to the estimate $N_f^* \simeq 13$., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, published version, references added

Most lattice studies of hot and dense QCD matter rely on extrapolation from zero or imaginary chemical potentials. The ill-posedness of numerical analytic continuation puts severe limitations on the reliability of such methods. Approaches to finite baryon density lattice QCD usually suffer from uncontrolled systematic uncertainties in addition to the well-known sign problem. We test a method - sign reweighting - that works directly at finite chemical potential and is yet free from any such uncontrolled systematics: with this approach the only problem is the sign problem itself. In practice the approach involves the generation of configurations with the positive fermionic weights given by the absolute value of the real part of the quark determinant, and a reweighting by a sign. There are only two sectors, +1 and -1 and as long as the average $\left\langle \pm \right\rangle \neq 0$ (with respect to the positive weight) this discrete reweighting has no overlap problem - unlike reweighting from $\mu=0$ - and the results are reliable. We also present results based on this algorithm on the phase diagram of lattice QCD with two different actions: as a first test, we apply the method to calculate the position of the critical endpoint with unimproved staggered fermions at $N_\tau=4$; as a second application, we study the phase diagram with 2stout improved staggered fermions at $N_\tau=6$. This second one is already a reasonably fine lattice - relevant for phenomenology. Spontaneous scale invariance breaking and the associated Goldstone boson, the dilaton, is investigated in renormalizable, unitary, interacting non-supersymmetric scalar field theories in $4-\varepsilon$ dimensions. At leading order it is possible to construct models which give rise to spontaneous scale invariance breaking classically and indeed a massless dilaton can be identified. Beyond leading order, in order to have no anomalous scale symmetry breaking in QFT, the models need to be defined at a Wilson-Fisher fixed point with exact conformal symmetry. It is shown that this requirement on the couplings is incompatible with having the type of flat direction which would be necessary for an exactly massless dilaton. As a result spontaneous scale symmetry breaking and an exactly massless dilaton can not occur in renormalizable, unitary $4-\varepsilon$ dimensional scalar QFT. The arguments apply to $\phi^6$ theory in $3-\varepsilon$ dimensions as well., Comment: 13 pages

The most general local, classically scale invariant, perturbatively renormalizable, globally $SU(N)$ invariant Lagrangian is constructed for spin-1 fields in 4 dimensions. The total number of independent couplings is 7 and the 1-loop $\beta$-functions are computed in the MSbar scheme. A number of asymptotically free RG flows are identified corresponding to non-trivial QFTs. None of these are gauge theories. State-of-the-art lattice QCD studies of hot and dense strongly interacting matter currently rely on extrapolation from zero or imaginary chemical potentials. The ill-posedness of numerical analytic continuation puts severe limitations on the reliability of such methods. Here we use the more direct sign reweighting method to perform lattice QCD simulation of the QCD chiral transition at finite real baryon density on phenomenologically relevant lattices. This method does not require analytic continuation and avoids the overlap problem associated with generic reweighting schemes, so has only statistical but no uncontrolled systematic uncertainties for a fixed lattice setup. This opens up a new window to study hot and dense strongly interacting matter from first principles. We perform simulations up to a baryochemical potential-temperature ratio of $\mu_B/T=2.5$ covering most of the RHIC Beam Energy Scan range in the chemical potential. In previous work, arXiv:1905.01909, we have calculated the $m_\varrho / f_\pi$ ratio in the chiral and continuum limit for $SU(3)$ gauge theory coupled to $N_f = 2,3,4,5,6$ fermions in the fundamental representation. The main result was that this ratio displays no statistically significant $N_f$-dependence. In the present work we continue the study of the $N_f$-dependence by extending the simulations to $N_f = 7, 8, 9, 10$. Along the way we also study in detail the $N_f$-dependence of finite volume effects on low energy observables and a particular translational symmetry breaking unphysical, lattice artefact phase specific to staggered fermions., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures

We consider the most general perturbatively renormalizable theory of vector fields in four dimensions with a global SU(N) symmetry and massless couplings. The Lagrangian contains 1 quadratic, 2 cubic and 4 quartic couplings. The RG flow among this set of 7 couplings is computed to 1-loop and a rich phase diagram is mapped out; in particular it is shown that a finite number of asymptotically free RG-flows exist corresponding to non-trivial fixed points for the ratios of the couplings. None of these are gauge theories, i.e. possess only global SU(N) invariance but not a local one. We also include the most general ghost couplings, still with global SU(N) invariance, and compute the RG flow to 1-loop for all 9 resulting couplings. Again asymptotically free RG flows exist with non-trivial fixed points for the ratios of couplings. It is shown that Yang-Mills theory emerges at a particular fixed point. The theories at the other fixed points are marginally relevant gauge symmetry violating perturbations of Yang-Mills theory. All approaches currently used to study finite baryon density lattice QCD suffer from uncontrolled systematic uncertainties in addition to the well-known sign problem. We formulate and test an algorithm, sign reweighting, that works directly at finite $\mu = \mu_B/3$ and is yet free from any such uncontrolled systematics. With this algorithm the {\em only} problem is the sign problem itself. This approach involves the generation of configurations with the positive fermionic weight $|{\rm Re\; det} D(\mu)|$ where $D(\mu)$ is the Dirac matrix and the signs ${\rm sign} \; ( {\rm Re\; det} D(\mu) ) = \pm 1$ are handled by a discrete reweighting. Hence there are only two sectors, $+1$ and $-1$ and as long as the average $\langle\pm 1\rangle \neq 0$ (with respect to the positive weight) this discrete reweighting by the signs carries no overlap problem and the results are reliable. The approach is tested on $N_t = 4$ lattices with $2+1$ flavors and physical quark masses using the unimproved staggered discretization. By measuring the Fisher (sometimes also called Lee-Yang) zeros in the bare coupling on spatial lattices $L/a = 8, 10, 12$ we conclude that the cross-over present at $\mu = 0$ becomes stronger at $\mu > 0$ and is consistent with a true phase transition at around $\mu_B/T \sim 2.4$., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures, references added

We perform the first direct determination of the position of the leading singularity of the pressure in the complex chemical potential $\mu_B$ plane in lattice QCD using numerical simulations with 2-stout improved rooted staggered fermions. This provides a direct determination of the radius of convergence of the Taylor expansion of the pressure that does not rely on a finite-order truncation of the expansion. The analyticity issues in the complex $\mu_B$ plane of the grand canonical partition function of QCD with rooted staggered fermions are solved with a careful redefinition of the fermion determinant that makes it a polynomial in the fugacity on any finite lattice, without changing the continuum limit of the observables. By performing a finite volume scaling study at a single coarse lattice spacing, we show that the limiting singularity is not on the real line in the thermodynamic limit, thus showing that the radius of convergence of the Taylor expansion gives a lower bound on the location of a possible phase transition. The phase diagram and the location of the critical endpoint (CEP) of lattice QCD with unimproved staggered fermions on a $N_t=4$ lattice was determined fifteen years ago with the multiparameter reweighting method by studying Fisher zeros. We first reproduce the old result with an exact algorithm (not known at the time) and with statistics larger by an order of magnitude. As an extension of the old analysis we introduce stout smearing in the fermion action in order to reduce the finite lattice spacing effects. First we show that increasing the smearing parameter $\rho$ the crossover at $\mu = 0$ gets weaker, i.e., the leading Fisher zero gets farther away from the real axis. Furthermore as the chemical potential is increased the overlap problem gets severe sooner than in the unimproved case, therefore shrinking the range of applicability of the method. Nevertheless certain qualitative features remain, even after introducing the smearing. Namely, at small chemical potentials the Fisher zeros first get farther away from the real axis and later at around $a\mu _q = 0.1 - 0.15$ they start to get closer, i.e., the crossover first gets weaker and later stronger as a function of $\mu$. However, because of the more severe overlap problem the CEP is out of reach with the smeared action., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We revisit the semi-classical calculation of the size distribution of instantons at finite temperature in non-abelian gauge theories in four dimensions. The relevant functional determinants were first calculated in the seminal work of Gross, Pisarski and Yaffe and the results were used for a wide variety of applications including axions most recently. In this work we show that the uncertainty on the numerical evaluations and semi-analytical expressions are two orders of magnitude larger than claimed. As a result various quantities computed from the size distribution need to be reevaluated, for instance the resulting relative error on the topological susceptibility at arbitrarily high temperatures is about 5% for QCD and about 10% for $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory. With higher rank gauge groups this discrepancy is even higher. We also provide a simple semi-analytical formula for the size distribution with absolute error $2\cdot10^{-4}$. In addition we also correct the over-all constant of the instanton size distribution in the MSbar scheme which was widely used incorrectly in the literature if non-trivial fermion content is present., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, references added

We present updated results for the non-perturbative $\beta$-function of SU(3) gauge theories with $N_f = 12$ or 10 massless flavors in the fundamental rep or $N_f = 2$ in the sextet rep, measured with staggered fermions. New data at finer lattice spacing and our previously introduced method, the infinitesimal $\beta$-function, strengthen the case that the $N_f = 12$ model has no infrared fixed point up to $g^2 = 7.2$. We show how underestimated cutoff dependence in one domain wall study for $N_f = 10$ has been corrected, which is now consistent with staggered results showing a monotonically increasing $\beta$-function. A consistent theme is that too small volumes can lead to apparent fixed points which vanish towards the continuum limit. We also apply the infinitesimal $\beta$-function method to the $N_f = 10$ model, finding consistent behavior with the finite-step $\beta$-function. Should a strongly coupled composite Higgs boson scenario be realized in Nature the most easily accessible experimental signal would be new particles made up of the same ingredients as the Higgs but with different quantum numbers. The lightest of these hypothetical new particles would probably be the vector mesons. In this contribution we report results on $m_\varrho / f_\pi$ in the chiral-continuum limit with $SU(3)$ gauge group and $N_f = 2,3,4,5,6$ flavors of fundamental fermions. In addition we compare $m_\varrho / f_\pi$ results from various models with different gauge groups and fermion content. In typical statistical mechanical systems the grand canonical partition function at finite volume is proportional to a polynomial of the fugacity $e^{\mu/T}$. The zero of this Lee-Yang polynomial closest to the origin determines the radius of convergence of the Taylor expansion of the pressure around $\mu=0$. The computationally cheapest formulation of lattice QCD, rooted staggered fermions, with the usual definition of the rooted determinant, does not admit such a Lee-Yang polynomial. We argue that the radius of convergence is then bounded by the spectral gap of the reduced matrix of the unrooted staggered operator. This is a cutoff effect that potentially affects all estimates of the radius of convergence with the standard staggered rooting. We suggest a new definition of the rooted staggered determinant at finite chemical potential that allows for a definition of a Lee-Yang polynomial, and, therefore of the numerical study of Lee-Yang zeros. We also describe an algorithm to determine the Lee-Yang zeros and apply it to configurations generated with the 2-stout improved staggered action at $N_t = 4$. We perform a finite-volume scaling study of the leading Lee-Yang zeros and estimate the radius of convergence of the Taylor expansion extrapolated to an infinite volume. We show that the limiting singularity is not on the real line, thus giving a lower bound on the location of any possible phase transitions at this lattice spacing. In the vicinity of the crossover temperature at zero chemical potential, the radius of convergence turns out to be $\mu_B/T \approx 2$ and roughly temperature independent. We calculate the $m_\varrho / f_\pi$ ratio in the chiral and continuum limit for $SU(3)$ gauge theory coupled to $N_f = 2,3,4,5,6$ fermions in the fundamental representation. Keeping all systematic effects under full control we find no statistically significant $N_f$-dependence; $m_\varrho / f_\pi = 7.95(15)$. Assuming the KSRF-relations we conclude that 3 other low energy quantities related to the vector meson are also $N_f$-independent within errors including the $\varrho\pi\pi$ coupling $g_{\varrho\pi\pi}$. If the model is thought of as a strong dynamics inspired composite Higgs model our results indicate that the experimentally most easily accessible new composite particle, the vector meson, and its properties may be robust and independent of the fermion content of the model as long as the gauge group is $SU(3)$, provided $N_f$-independence extends all the way to the conformal window., Comment: 16 pages, lots of figures, references added

SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f$ fermions in the fundamental representation serves as a theoretical testing ground for possible infrared conformal behavior, which could play a role in BSM composite Higgs models. We use lattice simulations to study the 10-flavor model, for which it has been claimed there is an infrared fixed point in the gauge coupling $\beta$-function. Our results suggest the opposite conclusion, namely we find no $\beta$-function fixed point in the explored range, with qualitative agreement with the 5-loop $\overline{MS}$ prediction. We use lattice simulations to study SU(3) gauge theory with 13 massless fermions in the fundamental representation. We present evidence that the theory is conformal with a non-zero infrared fixed point in the gauge coupling. We use a newly-developed technique to calculate the mass anomalous dimension at the fixed point via step-scaling of the mode number, allowing us to take the continuum limit and compare to perturbative predictions. SU(2) gauge theory is investigated with a lattice action which is insensitive to small perturbations of the lattice gauge fields. Bare perturbation theory can not be defined for such actions at all. We compare non-perturbative continuum results with that obtained by the usual Wilson plaquette action. The compared observables span a wide range of interesting phenomena: zero temperature large volume behavior (topological susceptibility), finite temperature phase transition (critical exponents and critical temperature) and also the small volume regime (discrete beta-function or step-scaling function). We discuss near-conformal gauge theories beyond the standard model (BSM) where interesting results on the twelve-flavor $\beta$-function of massless fermions in the fundamental representation of the SU(3) color gauge group and dilaton tests of the light scalar with two massless fermions in the two-index symmetric tensor (sextet) representation can be viewed as parts of the same BSM paradigm under investigation. We report results from high precision analysis of the twelve-flavor $\beta$-function \cite{Fodor:2016zil} refuting its published IRFP \cite{Cheng:2014jba,Hasenfratz:2016dou}. We present our objections to recent claims \cite{Hasenfratz:2017mdh,Hasenfratz:2017qyr} for non-universal behavior of staggered fermions used in our analysis. We also report our first analysis of dilaton tests of the light $0^{++}$ scalar in the sextet model and comment on related post-conference developments. The dilaton test is the main thrust of this conference contribution including presentation #405 on the $n_f=12$ $\beta$-function and presentation #260 on dilaton tests of the sextet model. As part of our ongoing lattice study of SU(3) gauge theory with two flavors of fermions in the two-index symmetric representation (the sextet model), we present the current status of the pseudoscalar particle spectrum. We use a mixed action approach based on the gradient flow to control lattice artifacts, allowing a simultaneous extrapolation to the chiral and continuum limits. We find strong evidence that the pseudoscalar is a Goldstone boson state, with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry and a non-zero Goldstone decay constant in the chiral limit. We describe a new method to determine non-perturbatively the beta function of a gauge theory using lattice simulations in the p-regime of the theory. This complements alternative measurements of the beta function working directly at zero fermion mass and bridges the gap between the weak coupling perturbative regime and the strong coupling regime relevant to the mass spectrum of the theory. We apply this method to ${\mathrm {SU(3)} }$ gauge theory with two fermion flavors in the 2-index symmetric (sextet) representation. We find that the beta function is small but non-zero at the renormalized coupling value $g^2 = 6.7$, consistent with our previous independent investigation using simulations directly at zero fermion mass. Results are reported for the beta-function of weakly coupled conformal gauge theories on the lattice, SU(3) with Nf=14 fundamental and Nf=3 sextet fermions. The models are chosen to be close to the upper end of the conformal window where perturbation theory is reliable hence a fixed point is expected. The study serves as a test of how well lattice methods perform in the weakly coupled conformal cases. We report new results from high precision analysis of an important BSM gauge theory with twelve massless fermion flavors in the fundamental representation of the SU(3) color gauge group. The range of the renormalized gauge coupling is extended from our earlier work {Fodor:2016zil} to probe the existence of an infrared fixed point (IRFP) in the $\beta$-function reported at two different locations, originally in {Cheng:2014jba} and at a new location in {Hasenfratz:2016dou}. We find no evidence for the IRFP of the $\beta$-function in the extended range of the renormalized gauge coupling, in disagreement with {Cheng:2014jba,Hasenfratz:2016dou}. New arguments to guard the existence of the IRFP remain unconvincing {Hasenfratz:2017mdh}, including recent claims of an IRFP with ten massless fermion flavors {Chiu:2016uui,Chiu:2017kza} which we also rule out. Predictions of the recently completed 5-loop QCD $\beta$-function for general flavor number are discussed in this context., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

We study three possible ways to circumvent the sign problem in the O(3) nonlinear sigma model in 1+1 dimensions. We compare the results of the worm algorithm to complex Langevin and multiparameter reweighting. Using the worm algorithm, the thermodynamics of the model is investigated, and continuum results are shown for the pressure at different $\mu/T$ values in the range $0-4$. By performing $T=0$ simulations using the worm algorithm the Silver Blaze phenomenon is reproduced. Regarding the complex Langevin, we test various implementations of discretizing the complex Langevin equation. We found that the exponentialized Euler discretization of the Langevin equation gives wrong results for the action and the density at low $T/m$. By performing continuum extrapolation we found that this discrepancy does not disappear and depends slightly on temperature. The discretization with spherical coordinates perform similarly at low $\mu/T$, but goes wrong also at some higher temperatures at high $\mu/T$. However, a third discretization that uses a constraining force to achieve the $\phi^2 = 1$ condition gives correct results for the action, but wrong results for the density at low $\mu/T$., Comment: 20 pages, typos fixed, and a short section added (Sec. We review recent progress in the lattice investigations of near-conformal non-abelian gauge theories relevant for dynamical symmetry breaking and model building of composite Higgs models. The emphasis is placed on the mass spectrum and the running renormalized coupling. We report new results on the conformal properties of an important strongly coupled gauge theory, a building block of composite Higgs models beyond the Standard Model. With twelve massless fermions in the fundamental representation of the SU(3) color gauge group, an infrared fixed point of the $\beta$-function was recently reported in the theory (Cheng:2014jba) with uncertainty in the location of the critical gauge coupling inside the narrow $[ 6.0

We analyze three sets of gauge ensembles in our extended physics program of a particularly important BSM gauge theory with a fermion doublet in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) BSM color gauge group. Our investigations include chiral symmetry breaking $\rm{(\chi SB)}$ in the p-regime and $\epsilon$-regime, the mass of the composite ${\rm 0^{++}}$ scalar, resonance spectroscopy, new physics from gauge anomaly constraints, and the role of stable sextet BSM baryons with Electroweak interactions in dark matter searches. Important new goals include studies of the ${\rm 0^{++}}$ scalar entangled with Goldstone dynamics in the p-regime and the $\epsilon$-regime, the resonance spectrum with particular attention to emerging LHC signals, like recent hints for diphoton excess at 750 GeV or diboson anomalies in the 2 TeV range. We report tests and results from a new approach to the spectral density and the mode number distribution of the Dirac operator in lattice gauge theories. The algorithm generates the spectral density of the lattice Dirac operator as a continuous function over all scales of the complete eigenvalue spectrum. This is distinct from an earlier method where the integrated spectral density (mode number) was calculated efficiently for some preselected fixed range of the integration. The new algorithm allows global studies like the chiral condensate from the Dirac spectrum at any scale including the cutoff-dependent IR and UV range of the spectrum. Physics applications include the scale-dependent mass anomalous dimension, spectral representation of composite fermion operators, and the crossover transition from the $\epsilon$-regime of Random Matrix Theory to the p-regime in chiral perturbation theory. The Electroweak interactions of a strongly coupled gauge theory are discussed with outlook beyond the Standard Model (BSM) under global and gauge anomaly constraints. The theory is built on a minimal massless fermion doublet of the SU(2) BSM flavor group (bsm-flavor) with a confining gauge force at the TeV scale in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the BSM SU(3) color gauge group (bsm-color). The intriguing possibility of near-conformal sextet gauge dynamics could lead to the minimal realization of the composite Higgs mechanism with a light $0^{++}$ scalar, far separated from strongly coupled resonances of the confining gauge force in the 2-3 TeV range, distinct from Higgsless Technicolor. In previous publications we have presented results for the meson spectrum of the theory, including the light composite scalar, perhaps the emergent Higgs impostor. Here we discuss the critically important role of the baryon spectrum in the sextet model investigating its compatibility with what we know about thermal evolution of the early Universe including its galactic and terrestrial relics. For an important application, we report the first numerical results on the baryon spectrum of this theory from non-perturbative lattice simulations with baryon correlators in the staggered fermion implementation of the strongly coupled gauge sector. The quantum numbers of composite baryons and their spectroscopy from lattice simulations are required inputs for exploring dark matter contributions of the sextet BSM model, as outlined for future work., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures

The scale-dependent renormalized coupling of SU(3) gauge theory coupled to Nf = 2 flavors of massless Dirac flavors in the sextet representation is presented in the range 0 < g^2 < 6.5. This range includes the location where the beta-function turns zero in the MSbar scheme to 3-loop and 4-loop approximations, however our non-perturbative result shows a monotonically increasing beta-function. Our lattice calclulations are carried out at several lattice spacings allowing for a controlled continuum extrapolation. We compute the renormalized running coupling of SU(3) gauge theory coupled to N_f = 2 flavors of massless Dirac fermions in the 2-index-symmetric (sextet) representation. This model is of particular interest as a minimal realization of the strongly interacting composite Higgs scenario. A recently proposed finite volume gradient flow scheme is used. The calculations are performed at several lattice spacings with two different implementations of the gradient flow allowing for a controlled continuum extrapolation and particular attention is paid to estimating the systematic uncertainties. For small values of the renormalized coupling our results for the beta-function agree with perturbation theory. For moderate couplings we observe a downward deviation relative to the 2-loop beta-function but in the coupling range where the continuum extrapolation is fully under control we do not observe an infrared fixed point. The explored range includes the locations of the zero of the 3-loop and the 4-loop beta-functions in the MSbar scheme. The absence of a non-trivial zero in the beta-function in the explored range of the coupling is consistent with our earlier findings based on hadronic observables, the chiral condensate and the GMOR relation. We continue our investigation of 2+1 flavor QCD thermodynamics using dynamical Wilson fermions in the fixed scale approach. Two additional pion masses, approximately 440 MeV and 285 MeV, are added to our previous work at 545 MeV. The simulations were performed at 3 or 4 lattice spacings at each pion mass. The renormalized chiral condensate, strange quark number susceptibility and Polyakov loop is obtained as a function of the temperature and we observe a decrease in the light chiral pseudo-critical temperature as the pion mass is lowered while the pseudo-critical temperature associated with the strange quark number susceptibility or the Polyakov loop is only mildly sensitive to the pion mass. We compute the renormalized running coupling of SU(3) gauge theory coupled to N_f = 8 flavors of massless fundamental Dirac fermions. The recently proposed finite volume gradient flow scheme is used. The calculations are performed at several lattice spacings allowing for a controlled continuum extrapolation. The results for the discrete beta-function show that it is monotonic without any sign of a fixed point in the range of couplings we cover. Work in progress is reported on a particularly interesting gauge theory with a fermion doublet in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) color gauge group. Extending previous studies we outline our strategy as we investigate Goldstone dynamics and Electroweak scale setting from chiral symmetry breaking ($\chi$ SB), test the GMOR relation from the spectrum of the Dirac operator and the related chiral condensate, begin to develop and test mixed action based improved analysis of $\chi$ SB with new run plans at fixed topology to cross over from the p-regime to the epsilon-regime of $\chi$ SB, continue to pursue the light $0^{++}$ scalar and its relation to the dilaton, and probe the scale-dependent running coupling from the perturbative UV scale to the scale of chiral symmetry breaking. Our observations suggest that the model is very close to the conformal window and a light composite scalar, perhaps the Higgs impostor with or without dilaton-like interpretation, appears to emerge with $0^{++}$ quantum numbers. The cut-off effects of the lattice gradient flow -- often called Wilson flow -- are calculated on a periodic 4-torus at leading order in the gauge coupling. A large class of discretizations is considered which includes all frequently used cases in practice. Finite temperature charmonium spectral functions in the pseudoscalar(PS) and vector(V) channels are studied in lattice QCD with 2+1 flavours of dynamical Wilson quarks, on fine isotropic lattices (with a lattice spacing of 0.057fm), with a non-physical pion mass of 545MeV. The highest temperature studied is approximately 1.4Tc. Up to this temperature no significant variation of the spectral function is seen in the PS channel. The V channel shows some temperature dependence, which seems to be consistent with a temperature dependent low frequency peak related to heavy quark transport, plus a temperature independent term at omega > 0. The Yang-Mills gradient flow and the observable E(t), defined by the square of the field strength tensor at t>0, are calculated at finite lattice spacing and tree-level in the gauge coupling. Improvement of the flow, the gauge action and the observable are all considered. The results are relevant for two purposes. First, the discretization of the flow, gauge action and observable can be chosen in such a way that $O(a^2)$, $O(a^4)$ or even $O(a^6)$ improvement is achieved. The eigenvalues of the Dirac operator at finite volume encode whether or not chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in a massless theory. We apply this framework in a particular BSM context, namely SU(3) gauge theory with N_f=2 massless flavors in the 2-index symmetric (sextet) representation. Our first results are at a single lattice spacing. We find that both the density of near-zero eigenvalues and the renormalization group invariant mode number indicate spontaneous symmetry breaking. Quantitatively, there is a discrepancy between the determination of the fermion condensate in the chiral limit via the eigenvalue spectrum and the determinations from direct measurements of the chiral condensate and the GMOR relation. Results on the computational efficiency of 2-flavor staggered Wilson fermions compared to usual Wilson fermions in a quenched lattice QCD simulation on $16^3\times32$ lattice at $\beta=6$ are reported. We compare the cost of inverting the Dirac matrix on a source by the conjugate gradient (CG) method for both of these fermion formulations, at the same pion masses, and without preconditioning. We find that the number of CG iterations required for convergence, averaged over the ensemble, is less by a factor of almost 2 for staggered Wilson fermions, with only a mild dependence on the pion mass. We also compute the condition number of the fermion matrix and find that it is less by a factor of 4 for staggered Wilson fermions. The cost per CG iteration, dominated by the cost of matrix-vector multiplication for the Dirac matrix, is known from previous work to be less by a factor 2-3 for staggered Wilson compared to usual Wilson fermions. Thus we conclude that staggered Wilson fermions are 4-6 times cheaper for inverting the Dirac matrix on a source in the quenched backgrounds of our study., Comment: v2: Major correction and revisions: we had overlooked a factor 1/4 in the cost estimate for matrix-vector multiplication with the staggered Wilson Dirac matrix. The frequently discussed strongly interacting gauge theory with a fermion flavor doublet in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) color gauge group is investigated \cite{Fodor:2012ty}. The chiral condensate and the mass spectrum are consistent with chiral symmetry breaking at vanishing fermion mass. In contrast, sextet fermion mass deformations of spectral properties are not consistent with leading conformal scaling behavior near the critical surface of a conformal theory. A recent paper \cite{DeGrand:2012yq} which could not resolve the conformal fixed point of the gauge coupling from the slowly walking scenario of a very small nearly vanishing \beta -function is not in conflict with chiral symmetry breaking reported here. Extended simulation results and their analysis are reported in a strongly coupled gauge theory with twelve fermion flavors in the fundamental SU(3) color representation. The conformality of the model is probed using mass deformed conformal finite size scaling (FSS) theory driven by the fermion mass anomalous dimension. Two independent conformal FSS fitting procedures are used in the analysis. The first one deploys physics motivated scaling functions, complemented by a second fitting procedure with spline based general B-forms for the scaling functions. We investigate two models of much recent interest in lattice Beyond Standard Model studies: N_f=2 fermions in the 2-index symmetric (sextet) representation, and N_f=12 fermions in the fundamental representation, both with SU(3) gauge symmetry. We present results at fixed lattice spacing for the static fermion potential and force as measured via lattice simulations. We show indications that both models are confining in the chiral limit and that neither theory is conformal. The Yang-Mills gradient flow in finite volume is used to define a running coupling scheme. As our main result the discrete beta-function, or step scaling function, is calculated for scale change s=3/2 at several lattice spacings for SU(3) gauge theory coupled to N_f = 4 fundamental massless fermions. The continuum extrapolation is performed and agreement is found with the continuum perturbative results for small renormalized coupling. New results are reported from large scale lattice simulations of a frequently discussed strongly interacting gauge theory with a fermion flavor doublet in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) color gauge group. We find that the chiral condensate and the mass spectrum of the sextet model are consistent with chiral symmetry breaking in the limit of vanishing fermion mass. In contrast, sextet fermion mass deformations of spectral properties are not consistent with leading conformal scaling behavior near the critical surface of a conformal theory. A recent paper could not resolve the conformal fixed point of the gauge coupling from the slowly walking scenario of a very small nearly vanishing \beta-function (DeGrand:2012yq). It is argued that overall consistency with our new results is resolved if the sextet model is close to the conformal window, staying outside with a very small non-vanishing \beta-function. The model would exhibit then the simplest composite Higgs mechanism leaving open the possibility of a light scalar state with quantum numbers of the Higgs impostor. It would emerge as the pseudo-Goldstone dilaton state from spontaneous symmetry breaking of scale invariance. We will argue that even without association with the dilaton, the scalar Higgs-like state can be light very close to the conformal window. The Yang-Mills gradient flow is considered on the four dimensional torus T^4 for SU(N) gauge theory coupled to N_f flavors of massless fermions in arbitrary representations. The small volume dynamics is dominated by the constant gauge fields. The expectation value of the field strength tensor squared is calculated for positive flow time t by treating the non-zero gauge modes perturbatively and the zero modes exactly. The finite volume correction to the infinite volume result is found to contain both algebraic and exponential terms. The leading order result is then used to define a one parameter family of running coupling schemes in which the coupling runs with the linear size of the box. The new scheme is tested numerically in SU(3) gauge theory coupled to N_f = 4 flavors of massless fundamental fermions. The calculations are performed at several lattice spacings with a controlled continuum extrapolation.
