As a powerful source of gravitational waves (GW), a supermassive black hole (SMBH) merger may be accompanied by a relativistic jet that leads to detectable electromagnetic (EM) emission. We model the propagation of post-merger jets inside a pre-merger circumnuclear environment formed by disk winds, and calculate multi-wavelength EM spectra from the forward shock region. We show that the non-thermal EM signals from SMBH mergers are detectable up to the detection horizon of future GW facilities such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Supermassive black hole (SMBH) coalescences are ubiquitous in the history of the Universe and often exhibit strong accretion activities and powerful jets. These SMBH mergers are also promising candidates for future gravitational wave detectors such as Laser Space Inteferometric Antenna (LISA). In this work, we consider neutrino counterpart emission originating from the jet-induced shocks. The physical picture is that relativistic jets launched after the merger will push forward inside the premerger disk wind material, and then they subsequently get collimated, leading to the formation of internal shocks, collimation shocks, forward shocks and reverse shocks. Cosmic rays can be accelerated in these sites and neutrinos are expected via the photomeson production process. We formulate the jet structures and relevant interactions therein, and then evaluate neutrino emission from each shock site. We find that month-to-year high-energy neutrino emission from the postmerger jet after the gravitational wave event is detectable by IceCube-Gen2 within approximately five to ten years of operation in optimistic cases where the cosmic-ray loading is sufficiently high and a mildly super-Eddington accretion is achieved. We also estimate the contribution of SMBH mergers to the diffuse neutrino intensity, and find that a significant fraction of the observed very high-energy ($E_\nu\gtrsim1$ PeV) IceCube neutrinos could originate from them in the optimistic cases. In the future, such neutrino counterparts together with gravitational wave observations can be used in a multimessenger approach to elucidate in greater detail the evolution and the physical mechanism of SMBH mergers., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. The Universe is filled with a diffuse background of MeV gamma-rays and PeV neutrinos, whose origins are unknown. Here, we propose a scenario that can account for both backgrounds simultaneously. Low-luminosity active galactic nuclei have hot accretion flows where thermal electrons naturally emit soft gamma rays via Comptonization of their synchrotron photons. Protons there can be accelerated via turbulence or reconnection, producing high-energy neutrinos via hadronic interactions. We demonstrate that our model can reproduce the gamma-ray and neutrino data. Combined with a contribution by hot coronae in luminous active galactic nuclei, these accretion flows can explain the keV -- MeV photon and TeV -- PeV neutrino backgrounds. This scenario can account for the MeV background without non-thermal electrons, suggesting a higher transition energy from the thermal to non-thermal Universe than expected. The cores of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been suggested as the sources of IceCube neutrinos, and recent numerical simulations have indicated that hot AGN coronae of Seyfert galaxies and radiatively inefficient accretion flows (RIAFs) of low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) may be promising sites of ion acceleration. We present detailed studies on detection prospects of high-energy multi-messenger emissions from RIAFs in nearby LLAGNs. We construct a model of RIAFs that can reproduce the observational features of the current X-ray observations of nearby LLAGNs. We then calculate the high-energy particle emissions from nearby individual LLAGNs, including MeV gamma rays from thermal electrons, TeV--PeV neutrinos produced by non-thermal protons, and sub-GeV to sub-TeV gamma rays from proton-induced electromagnetic cascades. We find that, although these are beyond the reach of current facilities, proposed future experiments such as e-ASTROGAM and IceCube-Gen2 should be able to detect the MeV gamma rays and the neutrinos, respectively, or else they can place meaningful constraints on the parameter space of the model. On the other hand, the detection of high-energy gamma rays due to the electromagnetic cascades will be challenging with the current and near-future experiments, such as Fermi and Cherenkov Telescope Array. Multi-messenger astrophysics, a long-anticipated extension to traditional and multiwavelength astronomy, has recently emerged as a distinct discipline providing unique and valuable insights into the properties and processes of the physical universe. These insights arise from the inherently complementary information carried by photons, gravitational waves, neutrinos, and cosmic rays about individual cosmic sources and source populations. Realizing the observation of astrophysical sources via non-photonic messengers has presented enormous challenges, as evidenced by the fiscal and physical scales of the multi-messenger observatories. However, the scientific payoff has already been substantial, with even greater rewards promised in the years ahead. In this review we survey the current status of multi-messenger astrophysics, highlighting some exciting recent results, and addressing the major follow-on questions they have raised. Key recent achievements include the measurement of the spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays out to the highest observable energies; discovery of the diffuse high energy neutrino background; the first direct detections of gravitational waves and the use of gravitational waves to characterize merging black holes and neutron stars in strong-field gravity; and the identification of the first joint electromagnetic + gravitational wave and electromagnetic + high-energy neutrino multi-messenger sources. We investigate the blazar contribution to the cumulative neutrino intensity assuming a generic relationship between neutrino and gamma-ray luminosities, $L_{\nu}\propto (L_{\rm ph})^{\gamma_{\rm lw}}$. Using the gamma-ray luminosity functions for blazars including flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lac objects, as well as the $Fermi$-LAT detection efficiency, we estimate contributions from {blazars resolved by $Fermi$-LAT as well as the unresolved counterpart.} Combining the existing upper limits from stacking analyses, the cumulative neutrino flux from all blazars ({including $Fermi$-LAT resolved and unresolved ones}) are constrained { in the range $0\lesssim\gamma_{\rm lw}\lesssim2.5$}. We also evaluate the effects of the redshift evolution and the effective local number densities for each class of FSRQs, BL Lacs, and all blazars, by which we place another type of constraints on the blazar contribution using the non-detection of high-energy neutrino multiplets. We demonstrate that these two upper limits are complementary, and that the joint consideration of the stacking and multiplet analyses { not only supports the argument that blazars are disfavored as the dominant sources of the 100-TeV neutrino background, but it extends this argument by including also $Fermi$-LAT-unresolved blazars as well, for a more generic luminosity correlation $L_{\nu}\propto (L_{\rm ph})^{\gamma_{\rm lw}}$}., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 8 pages, 4 figures

Mysteries about the origin of high-energy cosmic neutrinos have deepened by the recent IceCube measurement of a large diffuse flux in the 10-100 TeV range. Based on the standard disk-corona picture of active galactic nuclei (AGN), we present a phenomenological model enabling us to systematically calculate the spectral sequence of multimessenger emission from the AGN coronae. We show that protons in the coronal plasma can be stochastically accelerated up to PeV energies by plasma turbulence, and find that the model explains the large diffuse flux of medium-energy neutrinos if the cosmic rays carry only a few percent of the thermal energy. We find that the Bethe-Heitler process plays a crucial role in connecting these neutrinos and cascaded MeV gamma rays, and point out that the gamma-ray flux can even be enhanced by the reacceleration of secondary pairs. Critical tests of the model are given by its prediction that a significant fraction of the MeV gamma-ray background correlates with about 10 TeV neutrinos, and nearby Seyfert galaxies including NGC 1068 are promising targets for IceCube, KM3Net, IceCube-Gen2, and future MeV gamma-ray telescopes., Comment: 7+6 pages, 4+6 figures, 0+2 tables, version to appear in PRL (submitted on Apr/08/2019), with clarifications and extended descriptions (including discussion on NGC 1068). The ANITA collaboration have reported observation of two anomalous events that appear to be $\varepsilon_{\rm cr} \approx 0.6$ EeV cosmic ray showers emerging from the Earth with exit angles of $27^\circ$ and $35^\circ$, respectively. While EeV-scale upgoing showers have been anticipated as a result of astrophysical tau neutrinos converting to tau leptons during Earth passage, the observed exit angles are much steeper than expected in Standard Model (SM) scenarios. Indeed, under conservative extrapolations of the SM interactions, there is no particle that can propagate through the Earth with probability $p > 10^{-6}$ at these energies and exit angles. We explore here whether "beyond the Standard Model" (BSM) particles are required to explain the ANITA events, if correctly interpreted, and conclude that they are. Seeking confirmation or refutation of the physical phenomenon of sub-EeV Earth-emergent cosmic rays in data from other facilities, we find support for the reality of the ANITA events, and three candidate analog events, among the Extremely High Energy Northern Track neutrinos of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Properties of the implied BSM particle are anticipated, at least in part, by those predicted for the "stau" slepton ($\tilde{\tau}_R$) in some supersymmetric models of the fundamental interactions, wherein the stau manifests as the next-to-lowest mass supersymmetric partner particle., Comment: PRD submitted. 15 pages, 3 figures

The detection of gravitational waves and electromagnetic counterparts from a binary neutron star (BNS) merger confirmed that it is accompanied by the launch of fast merger ejecta. Analogous to supernova remnants, forward shocks formed by the interaction of the ejecta with interstellar material will produce high-energy cosmic rays. We investigate the possibility that Galactic neutron star merger remnants (NSMRs) significantly contribute to the observed cosmic rays in the energy range between the knee and the ankle. Using typical parameters obtained by modeling of GW170817, we find that NSMRs can accelerate iron nuclei up to $\sim500$ PeV. We calculate the cosmic-ray spectrum and composition observed on Earth, and show that the Galactic NSMR scenario can account for the experimental cosmic-ray data in the 20 -- 1000 PeV range. The observations of a macronova/kilonova accompanied by gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger (GW170817) confirmed that neutron star coalescences produce copious ejecta. The coincident gamma-ray detection implies the existence of a relativistic jet in this system. During the jet's propagation within the ejecta, high-energy photons and neutrinos can be produced. The photons are absorbed by the ejecta, while the neutrinos escape and can be detected. Here, we estimate such trans-ejecta neutrino emission, and discuss how neutrino observations could be used to differentiate between gamma-ray burst emission scenarios. We find that neutrinos from the internal shocks inside the ejecta may be detectable by IceCube within a few years of operation, and will likely be detected with IceCube-Gen2. Recent results from the Pierre Auger Collaboration have shown that the composition of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) becomes gradually heavier with increasing energy. Although gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been promising sources of UHECRs, it is still unclear whether they can account for the Auger results because of their unknown nuclear composition of ejected UHECRs. In this work, we revisit the possibility that low-luminosity GRBs (LL GRBs) act as the sources of UHECR nuclei, and give new predictions based on the intrajet nuclear composition models considering progenitor dependencies. We find that the nuclear component in the jet can be divided into two groups according to the mass fraction of silicon nuclei, Si-free and Si-rich. Motivated by the connection between LL GRBs and transrelativistic supernovae, we also consider the hypernova ejecta composition. Then, we discuss the survivability of UHECR nuclei in the jet base and internal shocks of the jets, and show that it is easier for nuclei to survive for typical LL GRBs. Finally, we numerically propagate UHECR nuclei ejected from LL GRBs with different composition models and compare the resulting spectra and composition to Auger data. Our results show that both the Si-rich progenitor and hypernova ejecta models match the Auger data well, while the Si-free progenitor models have more difficulty in fitting the spectrum. We argue that our model is consistent with the newly reported cross correlation between the UHECRs and starburst galaxies, since both LL GRBs and hypernovae are expected to be tracers of the star-formation activity. The coincident detection of a gravitational-wave (GW) event GW170817 with electromagnetic (EM) signals (e.g., a short gamma-ray burst SGRB 170817A or a macronova) from a binary neutron star merger within the nearby galaxy NGC 4933 provides a new, multimessenger test of the weak equivalence principle (WEP), extending the WEP test with GWs and photons. Assuming that the arrival time delay between the GW signals from GW170817 and the photons from SGRB 170817A or the macronova is mainly attributed to the gravitational potential of the Milky Way, we demonstrate that the strict upper limits on the deviation from the WEP are $\Delta \gamma<1.4\times10^{-3}$ for GW170817/macronova and $\Delta \gamma <5.9\times10^{-8}$ for GW170817/SGRB 170817A. A much more severe constraint on the WEP accuracy can be achieved ($\sim0.9\times10^{-10}$) for GW170817/SGRB 170817A when we consider the gravitational potential of the Virgo Cluster, rather than the Milky Way's gravity. This provides the tightest limit to date on the WEP through the relative differential variations of the $\gamma$ parameter for two different species of particles. Compared with other multimessenger (photons and neutrinos) results, our limit is 7 orders of magnitude tighter than that placed by the neutrinos and photons from supernova 1987A, and is almost as good as or is an improvement of 6 orders of magnitude over the limits obtained by the low-significance neutrinos correlated with GRBs and a blazar flare., Comment: 10 pages, no figures. We investigate current and future prospects for coincident detection of high-energy neutrinos and gravitational waves (GWs). Short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) are believed to originate from mergers of compact star binaries involving neutron stars. We estimate high-energy neutrino fluences from prompt emission, extended emission, X-ray flares, and plateau emission, and show that neutrino signals associated with the extended emission are the most promising. Assuming that the cosmic-ray loading factor is $\sim10$ and the Lorentz factor distribution is lognormal, we calculate the probability of neutrino detection from extended emission by current and future neutrino detectors, and find that the quasi-simultaneous detection of high-energy neutrinos, gamma rays, and GWs is possible with future instruments or even with current instruments for nearby SGRBs having extended emission. Violations of Lorentz invariance can lead to an energy-dependent vacuum dispersion of light, which results in arrival-time differences of photons arising with different energies from a given transient source. In this work, direction-dependent dispersion constraints are obtained on nonbirefringent Lorentz-violating effects, using the observed spectral lags of the gamma-ray burst GRB 160625B. This burst has unusually large high-energy photon statistics, so we can obtain constraints from the true spectral time lags of bunches of high-energy photons rather than from the rough time lag of a single highest-energy photon. Also, GRB 160625B is the only burst to date having a well-defined transition from positive lags to negative lags, which provides a unique opportunity to distinguish Lorentz-violating effects from any source-intrinsic time lag in the emission of photons of different energy bands. Our results place comparatively robust two-sided constraints on a variety of isotropic and anisotropic coefficients for Lorentz violation, including first bounds on Lorentz-violating effects from operators of mass dimension ten in the photon sector., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. Einstein's weak equivalence principle (WEP) states that any freely falling, uncharged test particle follows the same identical trajectory independent of its internal structure and composition. Since the polarization of a photon is considered to be part of its internal structure, we propose that polarized photons from astrophysical transients, such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and fast radio bursts (FRBs), can be used to constrain the accuracy of the WEP through the Shapiro time delay effect. Assuming that the arrival time delays of photons with different polarizations are mainly attributed to the gravitational potential of the Laniakea supercluster of galaxies, we show that a strict upper limit on the differences of the parametrized post-Newtonian parameter $\gamma$ value for the polarized optical emission of GRB 120308A is $\Delta\gamma<1.2\times10^{-10}$, for the polarized gamma-ray emission of GRB 100826A is $\Delta\gamma<1.2\times10^{-10}$, and for the polarized radio emission of FRB 150807 is $\Delta\gamma<2.2\times10^{-16}$. These are the first direct verifications of the WEP for multiband photons with different polarizations. In particular, the result from FRB 150807 provides the most stringent limit to date on a deviation from the WEP, improving by one order of magnitude the previous best result based on Crab pulsar photons with different energies., Comment: 7 pages, 1 table. Possible violations of Lorentz invariance (LIV) have been investigated for a long time using the observed spectral lags of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). However, these generally have relied on using a single photon in the highest energy range. Furthermore, the search for LIV lags has been hindered by our ignorance concerning the intrinsic time lag in different energy bands. GRB 160625B, the only burst so far with a well-defined transition from $positive$ lags to $negative$ lags provides a unique opportunity to put new constraints on LIV. Using multi-photon energy bands we consider the contributions to the observed spectral lag from both the intrinsic time lag and the lag by LIV effects, and assuming the intrinsic time lag to have a positive dependence on the photon energy, we obtain robust limits on LIV by directly fitting the spectral lag data of GRB 160625B. Here we show that these robust limits on the quantum gravity energy scales are $E_{\rm QG,1}\geq0.5\times10^{16}$ GeV for the linear, and $E_{\rm QG,2}\geq1.4\times10^{7}$ GeV for the quadratic LIV effects, respectively. Star-forming and starburst galaxies are considered as one of the viable candidate sources of the high-energy cosmic neutrino background detected in IceCube. We revisit contributions of supernova remnants (SNRs) and hypernova remnants (HNRs) in such galaxies to the diffuse high-energy neutrino and gamma-ray backgrounds, in light of the latest Fermi data above 50GeV. We also take into account possible time dependent effects of the cosmic-ray (CR) acceleration during the SNR evolution. CRs accelerated by the SNR shocks can produce high-energy neutrinos up to $\sim100$ TeV energies, but CRs from HNRs can extend the spectrum up to PeV energies. We show that, only if HNRs are dominant over SNRs, the diffuse neutrino background above 100 TeV can be explained without contradicting the gamma-ray data. However, the neutrino data around 30 TeV remain unexplained, which might suggest a different population of gamma-ray dark CR sources. Alternatively, we consider possible contributions of Pop-III HNRs up to $z\lesssim10$, and show that they are not constrained by the gamma-ray data, and thus could contribute to the diffuse high-energy backgrounds if their explosion energy reaches ${\mathcal E}_{\rm POP-III}\sim{\rm a~few}\times10^{53}$erg. More conservatively, our results suggest that the explosion energy of POP-III HNRs is ${\mathcal E}_{\rm POP-III}\lesssim7\times{10}^{53}$erg., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, ApJ in press

Five TeV neutrino events weakly correlated with five gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) were detected recently by IceCube. This work is an attempt to show that if the GRB identifications are verified, the observed time delays between the TeV neutrinos and gamma-ray photons from GRBs provide attractive candidates for testing fundamental physics with high accuracy. Based on the assumed associations between the TeV neutrinos and GRBs, we find that the limiting velocity of the neutrinos is equal to that of photons to an accuracy of $\sim1.9\times10^{-15}-2.5\times10^{-18}$, which is about $10^{4}-10^{7}$ times better than the constraint obtained with the neutrino possibly from a blazar flare. In addition, we set the most stringent limits up to date on the energy scale of quantum gravity for both the linear and quadratic violations of Lorentz invariance, namely $E_{\rm QG, 1}>6.3\times10^{18}-1.5\times10^{21}$ GeV and $E_{\rm QG, 2}>2.0\times10^{11}-4.2\times10^{12}$ GeV, which are essentially as good as or are an improvement of one order of magnitude over the results previously obtained by the GeV photons of GRB 090510 and the PeV neutrino from a blazar flare. Assuming that the Shapiro time delay is caused by the gravitational potential of the Laniakea supercluster of galaxies, we also place the tightest limits to date on Einstein's weak equivalence principle through the relative differential variations of the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter $\gamma$ values for two different species of particles (i.e., neutrinos and photons), yielding $\Delta\gamma \sim 10^{-11}-10^{-13}$. High-energy neutrino (HEN) and gravitational wave (GW) can probe astrophysical sources in addition to electromagnetic observations. Multimessenger studies can reveal nature of the sources which may not be discerned from one type of signal alone. We discuss HEN emission in connection with the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (ALIGO) event GW150914 which could be associated with a short gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected by the $Fermi$ Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) 0.4 s after the GW event and within localization uncertainty of the GW event. We calculate HEN flux from this short GRB, GW150914-GBM, and show that non-detection of a high-energy starting event (HESE) by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory can constrain the total isotropic-equivalent jet energy of this short burst to be less than $3\times 10^{52}$ erg., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are radio bursts characterized by millisecond durations, high Galactic latitude positions, and high dispersion measures. Very recently, the cosmological origin of FRB 150418 has been confirmed by \cite{kea16}, and FRBs are now strong competitors as cosmological probes. The simple sharp feature of the FRB signal is ideal for them to probe some of the fundamental laws of physics. Here we show that by analyzing the delay time between different frequencies, the FRB data can place stringent upper limits on the rest mass of the photon. For FRB 150418 at $z=0.492$, one can potentially reach $m_{\gamma} \leq 5.2 \times 10^{-47}$ g, which is $10^{20}$ times smaller than the rest mass of electron, and is about $10^3$ times smaller than that obtained using other astrophysical sources with the same method., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. A conservative constraint on the Einstein Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) can be obtained under the assumption that the observed time delay between correlated particles from astronomical sources is dominated by the gravitational fields through which they move. Current limits on the WEP are mainly based on the observed time delays of photons with different energies. It is highly desirable to develop more accurate tests that include the gravitational wave (GW) sector. The detection by the advanced LIGO/VIRGO systems of gravitational waves will provide attractive candidates for constraining the WEP, extending the tests to gravitational interactions, with potentially higher accuracy. Considering the capabilities of the advanced LIGO/VIRGO network and the source direction uncertainty, we show that the joint detection of GWs and electromagnetic signals could probe the WEP to an accuracy down to $10^{-10}$, which is one order of magnitude tighter than previous limits, and seven orders of magnitude tighter than the multi-messenger (photons and neutrinos) results by supernova 1987A., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRD

We consider gamma-ray burst (GRB) jets that are choked by extended material as sources of high-energy cosmic neutrinos. We take into account the jet propagation physics both inside the progenitor star and the surrounding dense medium. Radiation constraints, which are relevant for high-energy neutrino production are considered as well. Efficient shock acceleration of cosmic rays is possible for sufficiently low-power jets and/or jets buried in a dense, extended wind or outer envelope. Such conditions also favor GRB jets to become stalled, and the necessary conditions for stalling are explicitly derived. Such choked jets may explain transrelativistic supernovae (SNe) and low-luminosity (LL) GRBs, giving a unified picture of GRBs and GRB-SNe. Focusing on this unified scenario for GRBs, we calculate the resulting neutrino spectra from choked jets including the relevant microphysical processes such as multipion production in pp and pgamma interactions, as well as the energy losses of mesons and muons. We obtain diffuse neutrino spectra using the latest results for the luminosity function of LL GRBs. Although uncertainties are large, we confirm that LL GRBs can potentially give a significant contribution to the diffuse neutrino flux. Our results are consistent with the present IceCube data and do not violate the stacking limits on classical high-luminosity GRBs. We find that high-energy neutrino production in choked jets is dominated by pgamma interactions. These sources are dark in GeV-TeV gamma-rays, and do not contribute significantly to the Fermi diffuse gamma-ray background. Assuming stalled jets can launch a quasi-spherical shock in the dense medium, precursor TeV neutrinos emerging prior to the shock breakout gamma-ray emission can be used as smoking gun evidence for a choked jet model for LL GRBs. The Einstein Equivalence Principle (EEP) can be probed with astrophysical sources emitting simultaneously different types of neutral particles, or particles with varying energies, by testing their time of flight through the same gravitational field. Here we use the time delays between correlated photons from cosmological transients to constrain the accuracy of the EEP. We take data from two gamma-ray bursts as an example, and use, as a lower limit to the theoretical time delays between different energies, delays arising from only the gravitational field of our own galaxy. We then show that the parameterized post-Newtonian parameter $\gamma$ is the same for photons over energy ranges between eV and MeV and between MeV and GeV to a part in $10^{-7}$, which is at least one order of magnitude better than previous limits. Combining this bound on the wavelength dependence of $\gamma$ with the absolute bound $|\gamma-1|<0.3\%$ from light-deflection measurements at optical (eV) wavelengths, we thus extend this absolute bound on $\gamma$ to GeV energies., Comment: 6 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ

Gamma-Ray Bursts are the most energetic explosions in the Universe, and are among the most promising for detecting multiple non-electromagnetic signals, including cosmic rays, high energy neutrinos and gravitational waves. The multi-GeV to TeV gamma-ray range of GRB could have significant contributions from hadronic interactions, mixed with more conventional leptonic contributions. This energy range is important for probing the source physics, including overall energetics, the shock parameters and the Lorentz factor. In light of the latest IceCube data, we discuss the implications of the cosmic ray energy input from hypernovae and supernovae into the Universe, and their propagation in the hosting galaxy and galaxy clusters or groups. The magnetic confinement in these environments may lead to efficient $pp$ collisions, resulting in a diffuse neutrino spectrum extending from PeV down to 10 TeV energies, with a spectrum and flux level compatible with that recently reported by IceCube. If the diffuse 10 TeV neutrino background largely comes from such the CR reservoirs, the corresponding diffuse gamma-ray background should be compatible with the recent \textit{Fermi} data. In this scenario, the CR energy input from hypernovae should be dominant over that of supernovae, implying that the starburst scenario does not work if the supernova energy budget is a factor of two larger than the hypernova energy budget. We investigate the shock acceleration of particles in massive galaxy mergers or collisions, and show that cosmic rays (CRs) can be accelerated up to the second knee energy ~0.1-1 EeV and possibly beyond, with a hard spectral index Gamma ~ 2. Such CRs lose their energy via hadronuclear interactions within a dynamical timescale of the merger shock, producing gamma rays and neutrinos as a by-product. If ~ 10 % of the shock dissipated energy goes into CR acceleration, some local merging galaxies will produce gamma-ray counterparts detectable by CTA. Also, based on the concordance cosmology, where a good fraction of the massive galaxies experience a major merger in a cosmological timescale, the neutrino counterparts can constitute ~ 20-60 % of the isotropic background detected by IceCube., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure, published in ApJL

The recent gamma-ray burst GRB 130427A has an isotropic electromagnetic energy $E^{iso}\sim10^{54}$ erg, suggesting an ample supply of target photons for photo-hadronic interactions, which at its low redshift of $z\sim0.34$ would appear to make it a promising candidate for neutrino detection. However, the IceCube collaboration has reported a null result based on a search during the prompt emission phase. We show that this neutrino non-detection can provide valuable information about this GRB's key physical parameters such as the emission radius $R_{d}$, the bulk Lorentz factor $\Gamma$ and the energy fraction converted into cosmic rays $\epsilon_{p}$. The results are discussed both in a model-independent way and in the specific scenarios of an internal shock model (IS), a baryonic photospheric model (BPH) and magnetic photospheric model (MPH). We study a type of particle acceleration that operates via neutron-proton conversion in inelastic nuclear collisions. This mechanism can be expected for relativistic shocks at subphotospheres if relativistic outflows contain neutrons. Using a test-particle approximation, we numerically calculate the energy spectrum and the efficiency of accelerated particles, and show that a good energy fraction of the nucleons can be accelerated. Relativistic outflows with neutrons inevitably lead to inelastic collisions, and resulting subphotospheric gamma rays may explain prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts. In this model, hadronuclear, quasithermal neutrinos in the 10-100 GeV range should be generated, and they may even have a high-energy tail by neutron-proton-converter or shock acceleration mechanisms. We demonstrate the importance of dedicated searches with DeepCore+IceCube, though such analyses have not been performed. Gamma-ray bursts are the most concentrated explosions in the Universe. They have been detected electromagnetically at energies up to tens of GeV, and it is suspected that they could be active at least up to TeV energies. It is also speculated that they could emit cosmic rays and neutrinos at energies reaching up to the $10^{18}-10^{20}$ eV range. Here we review the recent developments in the photon phenomenology in the light of \swift and \fermi satellite observations, as well as recent IceCube upper limits on their neutrino luminosity. We investigate the expected neutrino emissivity from nuclear collisions in magnetically dominated collisional models of gamma-ray bursts, motivated by recent observational and theoretical developments. The results indicate that significant multi-GeV neutrino fluxes are expected for model parameter values which are typical of electromagnetically detected bursts. We show that for detecting at least one muon event in Icecube and its Deep Core sub-array, a single burst must be near the high end of the luminosity function and at a redshift $z\lesssim 0.2$. We also calculate the luminosity and distance ranges that can generate $0.01-1$ muon events per GRB in the same detectors, which may be of interest if simultaneously detected electromagnetically, or if measured with future extensions of Icecube or other neutrino detectors with larger effective volume and better sensitivity., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted version for Phys.Rev.D

We study effects of particle re-acceleration (or heating) in the post-shock region via magnetohydrodynamic/plasma turbulence, in the context of a mixed hadronic-leptonic model for the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), using both analytical and numerical methods. We show that stochastically accelerated (or heated) leptons, which are injected via pp and pg reactions and subsequent pair cascades, are plausibly able to reproduce the Band function spectra with alpha~1 and beta~2-3 in the ~MeV range. An additional hard component coming from the proton-induced cascade emission is simultaneously expected, which is compatible with observed extra power-law spectra far above the MeV range. We discuss the high energy neutrino emission from gamma-ray bursts resulting from the earliest generation (`population III') stars forming in the Universe, whose core collapses into a black hole. These gamma-ray bursts are expected to produce a highly relativistic, magnetically dominated jet, where protons can be accelerated to ultra-high energies. These interact with the photons produced by the jet, leading to ultra-high energy photo-meson neutrinos as well as secondary leptons and photons. The photon luminosity and the shock properties, and thus the neutrino spectrum, depend on the mass of the black holes as well as on the density of the surrounding external gas. We calculate the individual source neutrino spectral fluxes and the expected diffuse neutrino flux for various source parameters and evolution scenarios. Both the individual and diffuse signals appear detectable in the 1-300 PeV range with current and planned neutrino detectors such as IceCube and ARIANNA, provided the black hole mass is in excess of 30-100 solar masses. We investigate the high-energy neutrino emission expected from newly born magnetars surrounded by their stellar ejecta. Protons might be accelerated up to 0.1-100 EeV energies possibly by, e.g., the wave dissipation in the winds, leading to hadronic interactions in the stellar ejecta. The resulting PeV-EeV neutrinos can be detected by IceCube/KM3Net with a typical peak time scale of a few days after the birth of magnetars, making the characteristic soft-hard-soft behavior. Detections would be important as a clue to the formation mechanism of magnetars, although there are ambiguities coming from uncertainties of several parameters such as velocity of the ejecta. The chemical composition of the ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic rays serves as an important clue for their origin. Recent measurements of the elongation rates by the Pierre Auger Observatory hint at the possible presence of heavy or intermediate mass nuclei in the UHE cosmic rays. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and hypernovae have been suggested as possible sources of the UHE cosmic rays. Here we derive the constraints on the physical conditions under which UHE heavy nuclei, if they are accelerated in these sources, can survive in their intense photon fields. We find that in the GRB external shock and in the hypernova scenarios, UHE nuclei can easily survive photo-disintegration. In the GRB internal shock scenario, UHE nuclei can also survive, provided the dissipation radius and/or the bulk Lorentz factor of the relativistic outflow are relatively large, or if the low-energy self-absorption break in the photon spectrum of the prompt emission occurs above several KeV. The origin of the ultrahigh-energy (UHE) cosmic rays (CRs) from the second knee ($\sim6\times10^{17}$eV) above in the CR spectrum is still unknown. Recently, there has been growing evidence that a peculiar type of supernovae, called hypernovae, are associated with sub-energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), such as SN1998bw/GRB980425 and SN2003lw/GRB031203. Such hypernovae appear to have high (up to mildly relativistic) velocity ejecta, which may be linked to the sub-energetic GRBs. Assuming a continuous distribution of the kinetic energy of the hypernova ejecta as a function of its velocity $E_k\propto (\Gamma\beta)^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha\sim 2$, we find that 1) the external shock wave produced by the high velocity ejecta of a hypernova can accelerate protons up to energies as high as $10^{19} {\rm eV}$; 2) the cosmological hypernova rate is sufficient to account for the energy flux above the second knee; and 3) the steeper spectrum of CRs at these energies can arise in these sources. In addition, hypernovae would also give rise to a faint diffuse UHE neutrino flux, due to $p\gamma$ interactions of the UHE CRs with hypernova optical-UV photons., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Recent discovery of the afterglow emission from short gamma-ray bursts suggests that binary neutron star or black hole-neutron star binary mergers are the likely progenitors of these short bursts. The accretion of neutron star material and its subsequent ejection by the central engine implies a neutron-rich outflow. We consider here a neutron-rich relativistic jet model of short bursts, and investigate the high energy neutrino and photon emission as neutrons and protons decouple from each other. We find that upcoming neutrino telescopes are unlikley to detect the 50 GeV neutrinos expected in this model. For bursts at z~0.1, we find that GLAST and ground-based Cherenkov telescopes should be able to detect prompt 100 MeV and 100 GeV photon signatures, respectively, which may help test the neutron star merger progenitor identification., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures. 1 figure added, minor changes, ApJ accepted

It has been hypothesized recently that core collapse supernovae are triggered by mildly relativistic jets following observations of radio properties of these explosions. Association of a jet, similar to a gamma-ray burst jet but only slower, allows shock acceleration of particles to high energy and non-thermal neutrino emission from a supernova. Detection of these high energy neutrinos in upcoming kilometer scale Cherenkov detectors may be the only direct way to probe inside these astrophysical phenomena as electromagnetic radiation is thermal and contains little information. Calculation of high energy neutrino signal from a simple and slow jet model buried inside the pre-supernova star is reviewed here. The detection prospect of these neutrinos in water or ice detector is also discussed in this brief review. The ratio of anti-electron to total neutrino flux, $\Phi_{\bar{\nu}_e}:\Phi_\nu$, expected from $p\gamma$ interactions in astrophysical sources is $\le1:15$. We point out that this ratio is enhanced by the decay of $\mu^+\mu^-$ pairs, created by the annihilation of secondary high energy photons from the decay of the neutral pions produced in $p\gamma$ interactions. We show that, under certain conditions, the $\Phi_{\bar{\nu}_e}:\Phi_\nu$ ratio may be significantly enhanced in gamma-ray burst (GRB) fireballs, and that detection at the Glashow resonance of $\bar{\nu}_e$ in kilometer scale neutrino detectors may constrain GRB fireball model parameters, such as the magnetic field and energy dissipation radius., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, PRD accepted

We estimate the high energy neutrino flux from the giant flare of SGR 1806-20 on December 27, 2004, which irradiated Earth with a gamma-ray flux ~10^4 times larger than the most luminous gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected. The Antarctic Cherenkov neutrino detector AMANDA was on-line during the flare, and may either have detected high energy neutrinos for the first time from a cosmic point source, or put constraints on the flare mechanism of magnetars. Most active galactic nuclei (AGN) lack prominent jets, and show modest radio emission and significant X-ray emission which arises mainly from the galactic core, very near from the central black hole. We use a quantitative scenario of such core-dominated radio-quiet AGN, which attributes a substantial fraction of the X-ray emission to the presence of abortive jets involving the collision of gas blobs in the core. Here we investigate the consequences of the acceleration of protons in the shocks from such collisions. We find that protons will be accelerated up to energies above the pion photoproduction threshold on both the X-rays and the UV photons from the accretion disk. The secondary charged pions decay, producing neutrinos. We predict significant fluxes of TeV-PeV neutrinos, and show that the AMANDA II detector is already constraining several important astrophysical parameters of these sources. Larger cubic kilometer detectors such as IceCube will be able to detect such neutrinos in less than one year of operation, or otherwise rule out this scenario., Comment: 10 pages, 5 Postscript figures

A fraction of core collapse supernovae of type Ib/c are associated with Gamma-ray bursts, which are thought to produce highly relativistic jets. Recently, it has been hypothesized that a larger fraction of core collapse supernovae produce slower jets, which may contribute to the disruption and ejection of the supernova envelope, and explain the unusually energetic hypernovae. We explore the TeV neutrino signatures expected from such slower jets, and calculate the expected detection rates with upcoming Gigaton Cherenkov experiments. We calculate the TeV-PeV neutrino fluxes of gamma-ray bursts associated with supernovae, based on the observed association between GRB 030329 and supernova SN 2003dh. The neutrino spectral flux distributions can test for possible delays between the supernova and the gamma-ray burst events down to much shorter timescales than what can be resolved with photons. As an illustrative example, we calculate the probability of neutrino induced muon and electron cascade events in a km scale under-ice detector at the South Pole, from the GRB 030329. Our calculations demonstrate that km scale neutrino telescopes are expected to detect signals that will allow to constrain supernova-GRB models., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Neutrinos at energies above TeV can serve as probes of the stellar progenitor and jet dynamics of gamma ray bursts arising from stellar core collapses. They can also probe collapses which do not lead to gamma-rays, which may be much more numerous. We calculate detailed neutrino spectra from shock accelerated protons in jets just below the outer stellar envelope, before their emergence. We present neutrino flux estimates from such pre-burst jets for two different massive stellar progenitor models. The high energy neutrino signature from proton-proton and photo-meson interactions in a supernova remnant shell ejected prior to a gamma-ray burst provides a test for the precursor supernova, or supranova, model of gamma-ray bursts. Protons in the supernova remnant shell, and photons entrapped from a supernova explosion or a pulsar wind from a fast-rotating neutron star remnant provide ample targets for protons escaping the internal shocks of the gamma-ray burst to interact and produce high energy neutrinos. A gamma-ray burst fireball is likely to contain an admixture of neutrons, in addition to protons, in essentially all progenitor scenarios. Inelastic collisions between differentially streaming protons and neutrons in the fireball produce muon neutrinos (antineutrinos) of ~ 10 GeV as well as electron neutrinos (antineutrinos) of ~ 5 GeV, which could produce ~ 7 events/year in kilometer cube detectors, if the neutron abundance is comparable to that of protons. Photons of ~ 10 GeV from pi-zero decay and ~ 100 MeV electron antineutrinos from neutron decay are also produced, but will be difficult to detect.
