The $n=2$ and $n=3$ levels for muonic Helium are calculated using a potential that includes all one-loop and recoil effects. Electronic vacuum polarization corrections are calculated using an extension of Kinoshita and Nio method. For $n=2$, the results are $2p_{1/2}-2s_{1/2}=1375.05\pm 1.4$ meV and $2p_{3/2}-2s_{1/2}=1521.65\pm 1.4$ meV, essentially in agreement with the latest summary of the current calculations. The method proposed by Kinoshita and Nio to compute higher order vacuum polarization contributions to the Coulomb potential in muonic hydrogen is generalized to obtain relativistic corrections to their results., Comment: 4 pages

The energy levels of the $n=1$ and $n=2$ bound states of the $\mu^+\mu^-$ atom (true muonium) are calculated starting from a previously derived potential that correctly describes positronium to order $\alpha^5$. All electron vacuum polarization corrections on the true muonium levels are computed to the same $\alpha^5$ order and a few of order $\alpha^6$ are examined to get a sense of size of these contributions. We reexamine the structure of the $n=2$ levels of muonic hydrogen using a two-body potential that includes all relativistic, recoil and one loop corrections. The potential was originally derived from QED to describe the muonium atom and accounts for all contributions to order $\alpha^5$. Since one loop corrections are included, the anomalous magnetic moment contributions of the muon can be identified and replaced by the proton anomalous magnetic moment to describe muonic hydrogen with a point-like proton. This serves as a convenient starting point to include the dominant electron vacuum polarization corrections to the spectrum and extract the proton's mean squared radius $r_p=\sqrt{\langle r^2\rangle}$. We extend our treatment of the the spectroscopy and decays of the charm-strange quarkonium system to include the effect of using the full three-loop QCD correction to the static short distance potential. As before, our potential model consists of the relativistic kinetic energy term, a scalar linear confining term including its relativistic corrections and the perturbative QCD spin-dependent terms. A set of unperturbed wave functions for the various states is obtained using a variational technique that is further constrained by requiring that the wave functions also satisfy the relativistic virial theorem. These are then used in a perturbative treatment of the potential to fit the mass spectrum of the $c\bar{s}$ system and calculate the radiative decay widths. Our results accurately describe the $D_s$ spectrum and are compatible with the little data that is available for the radiative decays of the $D_s$ states., Comment: 7 pages, 3 tables

To gain some sense about the likelihood of measuring the Higgs boson quartic coupling, we calculate the contribution to the triple Higgs production cross section from the subprocesses $q\bar{q}\to ZHHH$ and $q\bar{q}'\to WHHH$. We show that the dominant channel proposed for the determination of the Higgs boson trilinear coupling, $pp\to HH+X$ via gluon fusion, exhibits an interference structure that is independent of the collider energy for collider energies in the range $8\,{\rm TeV}\leq \sqrt{s}\leq 100\,{\rm TeV}$ and is almost maximally destructive. The results previously obtained from the model-independent application of a generalized hidden horizontal $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry to the neutrino mass matrix are updated using the latest global fits for the neutrino oscillation parameters. The resulting prediction for the Dirac $CP$ phase $\delta_D$ is in agreement with recent results from T2K. The distribution for the Jarlskog invariant $J_\nu$ has become sharper and appears to be approaching a particular region. The approximate effects of matter on long baseline neutrino experiments are explored, and it is shown how the weak interactions between the neutrinos and the particles that make up the Earth can help to determine the mass hierarchy. A similar strategy is employed to show how NO$\nu$A and T2K could determine the octant of $\theta_a (\equiv \theta_{23})$. Finally, the exact effects of matter are obtained numerically in order to make comparisons with the form of the approximate solutions. The Dalitz decay $H\to\,f\bar{f}\gamma$ is calculated for very small $f\bar{f}$ invariant masses where the $f\bar{f}$ pair could be mistaken for a photon in analysis of $H\to\gamma\gamma$ decays. A precise comparison is made between the Dalitz decay $H\to\ell\bar{\ell}\gamma$ and the two body decay $H\to\gamma Z,Z\to\ell\bar{\ell}$ for electrons and for muons including experimental cuts appropriate for the ATLAS detector. The widths for these two processes differ by 8% for electrons and 3% for muons. The phenomenological consequences of the residual Z^s_2 and Zbar^s_2 symmetries are explored in detail. With a precisely measured value of the reactor angle, these two residual symmetries predict distinct distributions for the Dirac CP phase and the atmospheric angle, which leads to the possibility of identifying them at neutrino experiments. For both symmetries, it is possible to resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy in most of the parameter space, and they can be distinguished from one another if the true residual symmetry is Z^s_2 and the atmospheric angle is non-maximal. These results are obtained using an equally split schedule: a 1.5-year run of neutrinos and a 1.5-year run of antineutrinos at NOvA together with a 2.5-year run of neutrinos and a 2.5-year run of antineutrinos at T2K. We investigate the effects of including the full three-loop QCD correction to the static short distance $1/r$ potential on the spectroscopy and decays in the charmonium and upsilon systems. We use a variational technique with the full three-loop corrected potential to determine a set of unperturbed trial wave functions and treat the relativistic and one-loop corrections as perturbations. The perturbed results are compared to the subset of the charmonium and upsilon spectra using a $\chi^2$ test. The ATLAS Collaboration has recently announced the discovery of the 3P states of the Upsilon system, chi_b(3P), with mass of 10.539+-0.004(stat.)+-0.008(syst.) GeV. In a previous investigation of the Upsilon system, in the context of a comprehensive one-loop potential model, we calculated the masses of these states, but did not include them. The residual Z^s_2(k) and bar Z^s_2(k) symmetries induce a direct and unique phenomenological relation with theta_x (= theta_13) expressed in terms of the other two mixing angles, theta_s (= theta_12) and theta_a (= theta_23), and the Dirac CP phase delta_D. Z^s_2(k) predicts a theta_x probability distribution centered around 3^o ~ 6^o with an uncertainty of 2^o to 4^o while those from bar Z^s_2(k) are approximately a factor of two larger. Either result fits the T2K, MINOS and Double CHOOZ measurements. Alternately a prediction for the Dirac CP phase delta_D results in a peak at +-74^o (+-106^o) for Z^s_2(k) or +-123^o (+-57^o) for bar Z^s_2(k) which is consistent with the latest global fit. Model-independent consequences of applying a generalized hidden horizontal Z_2 symmetry to the neutrino mass matrix are explored. The Dirac CP phase delta_D can be expressed in terms of the three mixing angles as 4 c_a s_a c_s s_s s_x cos delta_D = (s^2_s - c^2_s s^2_x) (c^2_a - s^2_a) where the s_i, c_i are sines and cosines of the atmospheric, solar, and reactor angles. This relation is independent of neutrino masses and whether neutrinos are Dirac- or Majorana-type. Given the present constraints on the angles, delta_D is constrained to be almost maximal, a result which can be explored in experiments such as NOvA and T2K. The Majorana CP phases do not receive any constraint and are thus model-dependent. We explore the consequences of assuming that the neutrino mass matrix is a linear combination of the matrices of a three dimensional representation of the group $S_3$ and that it has one zero mass eigenvalue. Recent measurements of the $\eta_b(1S)$, the ground state of the $b\bar{b}$ system, show the splitting between it and the $\Up(1S)$ to be 69.5$\pm$3.2 MeV, considerably larger than lattice QCD and potential model predictions, including recent calculations published by us. The models are unable to incorporate such a large hyperfine splitting within the context of a consistent description of the energy spectrum and decays. We demonstrate that in our model, which incorporates a relativistic kinetic energy term, a linear confining term including its scalar-exchange relativistic corrections, and the complete one-loop QCD short distance potential, such a consistent description, including the measured hyperfine splitting, can be obtained by not softening the delta function terms in the hyperfine potential. We investigate the change in the decay rate of a muon caused by embedding it in the field of a laser. A previous paper found that the change could be large, as much as an order of magnitude. We investigate the behavior of the critical charge for spontaneous pair production, $Z_C$, defined as the charge at which the total energy of a $K$-shell electron is $E=-m_e$, as a function of the radius $R$ of the charge distribution. Our approach is to solve the Dirac equation for a potential $V(r)$ consisting of a spherically symmetrical charge distribution of radius $R$ and a Coulomb tail. For a spherical shell distribution of the type usually associated with color-flavor locked strange quark nuggets, we confirm the relation $Z_C=0.71 R({\rm fm})$ for sufficiently large $R$ obtained by Madsen, who used an approach based on the Thomas-Fermi model. We also present results for a uniformly charged sphere and again find that $Z_C\sim R$ for large enough $R$. Recently published measurements of the branching ratios ${\cal B}(\psi(1S)\to\ga \eta_C(1S))$ and ${\cal B}(\psi(2S)\to\ga \eta_C(1S))$ by the CLEO collaboration are examined in the context of a potential model that includes both relativistic and one-loop QCD corrections to the quark-antiquark interaction. The prediction for the width $\Gamma(\psi(1S)\to\ga \eta_C(1S))$ is in excellent agreement with the new data but the prediction for $\Gamma(\psi(2S)\to\ga \eta_C(1S))$ is too small. We present a detailed calculation of the electron-positron production rate using neutrinos in an intense background magnetic field. The computation is done for the process nu -> nu e- e+ (where nu can be nu_e, nu_mu, or nu_tau) within the framework of the Standard Model. We have performed a one-loop calculation of the width of the rare decay H -> Z Z \gamma in the standard model for Higgs boson masses 190 GeV \leq m_H \leq 250 GeV. We find that the most dominant helicity combinations for the Z bosons and the photon is when one of the Z bosons is longitudinally polarized and the other Z boson and the photon have the same helicity. A comparison of the decay width \Gamma(H->Z Z \gamma) to those of H->\gamma \gamma and H->\gamma Z shows that the ratios of the decay widths are \Gamma(H->Z Z \gamma) / \Gamma(H->\gamma\gamma) ~ \Gamma(H->Z Z \gamma) / \Gamma(H->\gamma Z) ~ 10^{-7}., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX, figures corrected

We examine the spectra and radiative decays of the cc-bar and bb-bar systems using a model which incorporates the complete one-loop spin-dependent perturbative QCD short distance potential, a linear confining term including (spin-dependent) relativistic corrections to order v^2/c^2, and a fully relativistic treatment of the kinetic energy. We compute the total cross section as well as angular and energy distributions for process $e^+e^-\to\gamma\gamma\gamma$ with both unpolarized and polarized beams in the framework of noncommutative quantum electrodynamics (NCQED). The calculation is performed in the center of mass of colliding electron and positron and is evaluated for energies and integrated luminosities appropriate to future linear colliders. We find that by using unpolarized beams it is possible to probe the Lorentz symmetry violating azimuthal dependence of the cross section. Furthermore, with polarized beams the left-right asymmetry of the CP violating NCQED amplitudes can be used to obtain bounds on the noncommutative scale $\Lambda_{NC}$ which exceed 1.0 TeV., Comment: version accepted by Physical Review

We have calculated the width of the rare decay $H\to\gamma\gamma Z$ at one-loop level in the standard model for Higgs boson masses in the range $115 {\rm GeV} \leq m_H \leq 160 {\rm GeV}$ . For this range of Higgs boson masses we find that $Z$ boson is predominantly longitudinally polarized, and the photons have the same helicity. A comparison of the decay width $\Gamma(H\to \gamma\gamma Z)$ to those of $H\to\gamma\gamma$ and $H\to\gamma Z$ shows that, for the Higgs boson mass of $m_H \sim 135 \rm{GeV}$, the ratios of the decay widths are $\Gamma(H\to\gamma\gamma Z) / \Gamma(H\to\gamma\gamma) \sim \Gamma(H\to\gamma\gamma Z) / \Gamma(H\to\gamma Z) \sim 10^{-5}-10^{-6}$., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX

We examine to what extent several recently discovered narrow resonances can be interpreted as conventional $c\bar{c}$ bound states describable using a potential model. Measurements suggest that our universe has a substantial dark energy component. The most recent data on type Ia supernovae give a dark energy density which is in good agreement with other measurements if the dark energy is assumed to be a cosmological constant. We compute the Noncommutative QCD (NCQCD) contributions to the three gluon decay modes of heavy quarkonia. For triplet quarkonia (ortho-quarkonia), the NCQCD correction to the QCD three gluon decay mode, like the standard model contribution, is infrared finite. In the case of singlet quarkonia (para-quarkonia), whose QCD three gluon decay mode has infrared singularities which are removed using one-loop corrections to the two gluon mode, we find that NCQCD contribution is also infrared finite. Using the one-loop helicity amplitudes for low-energy $\nu\gamma\to\nu\gamma$ and $\bar\nu\gamma\to\bar\nu\gamma$ scattering in the standard model with massless neutrinos, we study the optical activity of a sea of neutrinos and antineutrinos. We examine the implications of including corrections associated with the noncommutative extension of quantum electrodynamics - NCQED - to the decays of the ortho and para positronium (\Trip and \Sing) ground states. In NCQED, the well known charge conjugation argument restricting \Trip decays to an odd number of photons and \Sing decays to an even number of photons no longer obtains. Instead, the dominant two photon decay mode of \Sing is accompanied by a three photon mode. The dominant three photon decay mode of \Trip receives a NCQED correction, but there is no corresponding two photon decay mode in the weak binding limit. These corrections to the $P_s$ three photon decay mode have a different energy distribution, but their effect is too small to explain any discrepancy between the observed and calculated values of the \Trip lifetime., Comment: Additional references

We compute the one-loop helicity amplitudes for low-energy $\nu\gamma\to\nu\gamma$ scattering and its crossed channels in the standard model with massless neutrinos. In the center of mass, with $\sqrt{s} = 2\omega\ll 2m_e$, the cross sections for these $2\to 2$ channels grow roughly as $\omega^6$. The scattered photons in the elastic channel are circularly polarized and the net value of the polarization is non-zero. Unitarity relates the total cross section for neutrino-nucleon scattering to the neutrino-nucleon forward scattering amplitude. Assuming the validity of the perturbative expansion of the forward amplitude in the {\em weak} coupling constant, we derive a unitarity bound on the inelastic cross section. The inelastic cross section saturates this bound at a typical neutrino energy $E_\nu \simeq 10^8 {\rm GeV}$. The one-loop helicity amplitudes for the elastic scattering process $\gamma\nu\to\gamma\nu$ in the Standard Model are computed at high center of mass energies. A general decomposition of the amplitudes is utilized to investigate the validity of some of the key features of our results. In the center of mass, where $\sqrt{s} = 2\omega$, the cross section grows roughly as $\omega^6$ to near the threshold for $W$-boson production, $\sqrt{s} = m_W$. Although suppressed at low energies, we find that the elastic cross section exceeds the cross section for $\gamma\nu\to\gamma\gamma\nu$ when $\sqrt{s}>13 $ GeV. We demonstrate that the scattered photons are circularly polarized and the net value of the polarization is non-zero. Recently, Barger {\em et al.} computed energy losses into Kaluza Klein modes from astrophysical plasmas in the approximation of zero density for the plasmas. We extend their work by considering the effects of finite density for two plasmon processes. Our results show that, for fixed temperature, the energy loss rate per cm$^3$ is constant up to some critical density and then falls exponentially. This is true for transverse and longitudinal plasmons in both the direct and crossed channels over a wide range of temperature and density. A difficulty in deriving the appropriate covariant interaction energy at finite density and temperature is addressed. The Higgs boson decay, H -> mu mubar gamma, is studied in the Standard Model at the tree and one-loop levels. It is shown that for Higgs boson masses above 110 GeV, the contribution to the radiative width from the one-loop level exceeds the contribution from the tree level, and for Higgs boson masses above 140 GeV, it even exceeds the contribution from the tree level decay H -> mu mubar. We compute the contribution of Kaluza-Klein graviton exchange to the cross section for photon-neutrino scattering. Unlike the usual situation where the virtual graviton exchange represents a small correction to a leading order electroweak or strong amplitude, in this case the graviton contribution is of the same order as the electroweak amplitude, or somewhat larger. Inclusion of the graviton contribution is not sufficient to allow high energy neutrinos to scatter from relic neutrinos in processes such as $\nu\bar{\nu}\to\gamma\gamma$, but the photon-neutrino decoupling temperature is substantially reduced., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures LaTeX. We present collider tests of the recent proposal for weak-scale quantum gravity due to new large compact space dimensions in which only the graviton ($\G$) propagates. We show that the existing high precision LEP-I $Z$-pole data can impose non-trivial constraints on the scale of the new dimensions, via the decay mode $Z\to f\bar{f}+\G$ ($f=q,\ell$). These bounds are comparable to those obtained at high energy colliders and provide the first sensitive probe of the scalar graviton. We also study $W(Z)+\G$ production and the anomalous $WW(ZZ)$ signal from virtual $\G$-states at the Fermilab Tevatron, and compare them with the LEP-I bound and those from LEP-II and future linear colliders., Comment: 4 pages, 1 postscript figure included

We calculate the rates and lepton (l) invariant mass distributions for decays of the form 0^{-+}->l^+l^-\gamma, which are important radiative corrections to the purely leptonic decays 0^{-+}->l^+l^-. Our approach uses the loop diagrams which arise by including the two photon intermediate state and we retain the imaginary parts of the loops - a radiative extension of the `unitarity bound' for the process.
