Search

More than a century after the performance of the oil drop experiment, the possible existence of fractionally charged particles FCP still remains unsettled. The search for FCPs is crucial for some extensions of the Standard Model in particle physics. Most of the previously conducted searches for FCPs in cosmic rays were based on experiments underground or at high altitudes. However, there have been few searches for FCPs in cosmic rays carried out in orbit other than AMS-01 flown by a space shuttle and BESS by a balloon at the top of the atmosphere. In this study, we conduct an FCP search in space based on on-orbit data obtained using the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) satellite over a period of five years. Unlike underground experiments, which require an FCP energy of the order of hundreds of GeV, our FCP search starts at only a few GeV. An upper limit of $6.2\times 10^{-10}~~\mathrm{cm^{-2}sr^{-1} s^{-1}}$ is obtained for the flux. We present a detailed timing study of the brightest persistent X-ray source Sco X-1 using the data collected by the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope ($Insight$-HXMT) from July 2017 to August 2018. A complete $Z$-track hardness-intensity diagram (HID) is obtained. The normal branch oscillations (NBOs) at $\sim$ 6 Hz in the lower part of the normal branch (NB) and the flare branch oscillations (FBOs) at $\sim$ 16 Hz in the beginning part of the flaring branch (FB) are found in observations with the Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) and the Medium Energy X-ray Telescope (ME) of $Insight$-HXMT, while the horizontal branch oscillations (HBOs) at $\sim$ 40 Hz and the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) at $\sim$ 800 Hz are found simultaneously up to 60 keV for the first time on the horizontal branch (HB) by the High Energy X-ray Telescope (HE) and ME. We find that for all types of the observed QPOs, the centroid frequencies are independent of energy, while the root mean square (rms) increases with energy; the centroid frequencies of both the HBOs and kHz QPOs increase along the $Z$-track from the top to the bottom of the HB; and the NBOs show soft phase lags increasing with energy. A continuous QPO transition from the FB to NB in $\sim$ 200 s are also detected. Our results indicate that the non-thermal emission is the origin of all types of QPOs, the innermost region of the accretion disk is non-thermal in nature, and the corona is nonhomogeneous geometrically.

High energy cosmic ray electrons plus positrons (CREs), which lose energy quickly during their propagation, provide an ideal probe of Galactic high-energy processes and may enable the observation of phenomena such as dark-matter particle annihilation or decay. The CRE spectrum has been directly measured up to $\sim 2$ TeV in previous balloon- or space-borne experiments, and indirectly up to $\sim 5$ TeV by ground-based Cherenkov $\gamma$-ray telescope arrays. Evidence for a spectral break in the TeV energy range has been provided by indirect measurements of H.E.S.S., although the results were qualified by sizeable systematic uncertainties. Here we report a direct measurement of CREs in the energy range $25~{\rm GeV}-4.6~{\rm TeV}$ by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) with unprecedentedly high energy resolution and low background. The majority of the spectrum can be properly fitted by a smoothly broken power-law model rather than a single power-law model. The direct detection of a spectral break at $E \sim0.9$ TeV confirms the evidence found by H.E.S.S., clarifies the behavior of the CRE spectrum at energies above 1 TeV and sheds light on the physical origin of the sub-TeV CREs., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, Nature in press, doi:10.1038/nature24475

We give predictions of $\jpsi$ and $\psits$ yields and polarizations in prompt production at hadron colliders based on non-relativistic QCD factorization formula. We calculate short-distance coefficients of all important color-octet intermediate channels as well as color-singlet channels up to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_S^4)$, i.e. next-to-leading order in $\alpha_S$. For prompt $\jpsi$ production, we also take into account feeddown contributions from $\chi_{cJ}$(J=0,1,2) and $\psits$ decays. Color-singlet long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are estimated by using potential model, and color-octet LDMEs are extracted by fitting the Tevatron yield data only. The predictions are satisfactory for both yields and polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ and prompt $\psits$ production at the Tevatron and the LHC. In particular, we find our predictions for polarizations of prompt $\jpsi$ production have only a little difference from our previous predictions for polarizations of direct $\jpsi$ production., Comment: Version published in JHEP, 17 pages, 8 figures

$\Upsilon(nS)$ and $\chi_b(nP)$ (n=1,2,3) production at the LHC is studied at next-to-leading order in $\alpha_s$ in nonrelativistic QCD. Feeddown contributions from higher $\chi_b$ and $\Upsilon$ states are all considered for lower $\Upsilon$ cross sections and polarizations. The long distance matrix elements (LDMEs) are extracted from the yield data, and then used to make predictions for the $\Upsilon(nS)$ polarizations, which are found to be consistent with the measured polarization data within errors. In particular, the $\Upsilon(3S)$ polarization puzzle can be understood by a large feeddown contribution from $\chi_b(3P)$ states. Our results may provide a good description for both cross sections and polarizations of prompt $\Upsilon(nS)$ and $\chi_b(nP)$ production at the LHC., Comment: The text and abstract are substantially changed due to the change in the fitting procedure: we now extract LDMEs of $\Upsilon(nS)$ and $\chi_b{nP}$ by fitting the yield data of the LHC (including cross sections measured by ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb), and then make predictions for the polarizations of $\Upsilon(nS)$

One of the most challenging open problems in heavy quarkonium physics is the double charm production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at B factories. The measured cross section of $e^+ e^- \to J/\psi + \eta_c$ is much larger than leading order (LO) theoretical predictions. With the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism, we calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD correction to this process. Taking all one-loop self-energy, triangle, box, and pentagon diagrams into account, and factoring the Coulomb-singular term into the $c\bar c$ bound state wave function, we get an ultraviolet and infrared finite correction to the cross section of $e^+e^-\to J/\psi + \eta_c$ at $\sqrt{s} =10.6$ GeV. We find that the NLO QCD correction can substantially enhance the cross section with a K factor (the ratio of NLO to LO) of about 1.8-2.1; hence it greatly reduces the large discrepancy between theory and experiment. With $m_c=1.4{\rm GeV}$ and $\mu=2m_c$, the NLO cross section is estimated to be 18.9 fb, which reaches to the lower bound of experiment., Comment: Version appeared in PRL, Figure 3 added showing the renormalization scale dependence of the cross section, new BaBar data added

We calculate the production cross sections for $D^{*+}D^{*-}$, $D^+D^{*-}$ and $D^+D^-$ in $e^+e^-$ annihilation through one virtual photon in the framework of perturbative QCD with constituent quarks. The calculated cross sections for $D^{*+}D^{*-}$ and $D^+D^{*-}$ production are roughly in agreement with the recent Belle data. The helicity decomposition for $D^{*}$ meson production is also calculated. The fraction of the $D^{*\pm}_LD^{*\mp}_T$ final state in $e^+e^-\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ process is found to be 65%. The fraction of $DD^*_T$ production is 100% and $DD^*_L$ is forbidden in $e^+e^-$ annihilation through one virtual photon. We further consider $e^+e^-$ annihilation through two virtual photons, and then find the fraction of $DD^{*}_T$ in $e^+e^-\to DD^{*}$ process to be about 91%., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures
