Abstract

We investigate the possibility that inflation originates from a composite field theory, in terms of an effective chiral Lagrangian involving a dilaton and pions. The walking dynamics of the theory constrain the potential in a specific way, where the anomalous dimensions of operators involving pions play a crucial role. For realistic values of the anomalous dimensions, we find a successful hybrid inflation occurring via the dilaton-inflaton, with the pions acting as waterfall fields. Compositeness consistency strongly constrain the model, predicting a dilaton scale $f_\chi \sim \mathcal{O} (1)$ in unit of the Planck scale, an inflation scale $H_\text{inf} \sim 10^{10}$ GeV, and the pion scale around $10^{14}$ GeV. Abstract

A large set of models beyond the Standard Model of particle physics suggest that the top quark plays a special role in fundamental interactions. At the same time some of these models predict that a particle responsible for dark matter is present in the physical spectrum of the theory, and in particular cases dark matter may be specially linked to the top sector. Such a new physics configuration occurs, for instance, in composite frameworks that additionally feature vector-like quarks as mediators of the interactions of the dark matter with the Standard Model. We investigate the interplay of top-philic dark matter and the presence of several vector-like top partners. Such a non-minimal setup with several vector-like fermions is typical of composite scenarios, and we make use of an effective model to study to which extent such non-minimality modifies the collider and cosmological phenomenology of the minimal model, the latter only including one vector-like mediator of the dark matter interactions with the Standard Model., 7 pages, 4 figures. v2: discussion on collider constraints extended

3. Gauge $SU(2)_f$ flavour transfers

Abstract

We introduce the idea of flavour transfer from a non-abelian horizontal $SU(2)_f$ flavour gauge group embedded in the Standard Model flavour structure. The new flavour vector bosons, in the mass range from the tens of GeV to multi-TeV do not induce large flavour-changing currents and meson oscillations, which usually provide the dominant constraints on this type of structure. Instead, the dominant constraints arise from ``flavour-transfer'' operators that we will study in details. Several explicit models are presented and their prospects are thoroughly explored, including their phenomenology in the lepton and quark sectors at colliders and lower energy experiments. We finally perform a complete numerical fit in one such scenario, showing that LHC-based lepton-flavour violating searches are competitive with intensity frontier observables., Comment: 50 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The attractive feature of supersymmetry is predictive power, due to the large number of calculable properties and to coupling non-renormalisation. This power can be fully expressed in hidden sectors where supersymmetry may be exact, as these sectors are secluded from the visible one where instead supersymmetry must be broken. This suggests a new paradigm for supersymmetric dark sectors, where supersymmetry is exact at the dark matter scale, implying that many properties of hidden supersymmetric dark sectors can be fully computed. 5. SU(5) aGUT: a minimal asymptotic grand unification model

Abstract

We present a new grand unification paradigm, where gauge couplings do not need to be equal at any given scale, instead they run towards the same fixed point in the deep ultraviolet. We provide a concrete example based on SU(5) with a compactified extra space dimension. By construction, fermions are embedded in different SU(5) bulk fields, hence baryon number is conserved and proton decay is forbidden. The lightest Kaluza-Klein tier consists of stable states, providing an asymmetric Dark Matter candidate via their baryonic charges, with a mass of 2.4 TeV. Abstract

We investigate the phenomenology of a scalar top-philic dark matter candidate when adding a dimension-five contact interaction term, as motivated by possible underlying extensions of the Standard Model such as composite Higgs models. We show that the presence of contact interactions can have a major impact on the dark matter relic density as well as on its direct and indirect detection prospects, while the collider phenomenology of the model is unaffected. Abstract

We present a class of new physics scenarios wherein the Standard Model (SM) is extended with a new $SU(2)_D$ dark gauge sector. These frameworks typically include a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ parity under which states transforming non-trivially under $SU(2)_D$ have different parity assignments. After spontaneous breaking of the $SU(2)_D$ symmetry via a new scalar doublet, the ensuing massive vector bosons with non-zero D-isospin are Dark Matter (DM) candidates. Non-renormalisable kinetic mixing in the gauge sector or a Higgs portal are not required to connect the dark sector to the SM. We introduce instead a Vector-Like (VL) fermion doublet of $SU(2)_D$, the members of which are singlets of the SM Electro-Weak (EW) gauge group, which mediates the interactions between the dark sector and the SM itself. This class of Fermion Portal Vector DM (FPVDM) allows multiple realisations, depending on the properties of the the VL partner and the scalar potential. As a practical example, here, we discuss in detail a realisation involving a VL top partner assuming no mixing between the two scalars of the theory. We then provide bounds from collider and astroparticle observables. The origin of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry in this class of models can be justified in the form of a dark EW sector or through an underlying composite structure. The new class of FPVDM models we suggest here has a large number of phenomenological applications depending on the mediator properties and can be used for collider and non-collider studies alike, some of which we outline here for future studies., 26 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. Abstract

New Physics models with either an elementary or composite origin are often associated with a similar imprint in a direct search at colliders, case in point being the production of a light pseudoscalar in association with a monochromatic photon from the decay of a Z boson at future $e+e-$ colliders. We exploit the correlation between the discovery of a signal in the Z decays and electroweak precision measurements as a tool to distinguish a composite model from an elementary scalar one. We explicitly test the asymptotic grand unification of a minimal 5-dimensional model with SO(10) gauge theory compactified on an $S^{1}/Z_{2}\times Z^{\prime}_{2}$ orbifold. We consider all matter fields as propagating in the bulk and show that the gauge couplings asymptotically run to a fixed point in the UV. We propose a new family structure for the Standard Model fermions, where the muon is assigned to the third family, taking the placeholder from the tau lepton. This reassignment, which is a mere choice of convention in the Standard Model, becomes physically meaningful in the presence of new physics assuming a direct link between quarks and leptons. Abstract

We consider the compactification of a Yang-Mills theory on a three-dimensional nilmanifold. The compactification generates a Yang-Mills theory in four space-time dimensions, coupled to a specific scalar sector. The compactification geometry gives rise to masses for the zero-modes, proportional to the twist parameter of the nilmanifold. We study the simple example of an SU (3) model broken by a non-trivial vacuum of the scalar potential which generates three mass scales, two being at tree level, and the third one at loop level. We point out the relevance of general twisted geometries for model building and in particular for gauge-Higgs type models, as the twist generates tree-level mass hierarchies useful for grand unification and for the Higgs sector in electroweak symmetry breaking., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

In Standard Model (SM) Higgs Boson pair production initiated by photons ($����\to h h$) is loop-generated process and thereby very sensitive to any new couplings and particles that may come in loops. The Composite Higgs Models provide an alternate mechanism to address the hierarchy problem of SM where Higgs instead of being an elementary field could be a bound state of a strongly interacting sector. These set of models apart from modifying the SM Higgs couplings could also introduce new effective couplings that can have substantial impact on the loop processes. Abstract

The next generation electron-positron colliders are designed for precision studies of the Standard Model and its extensions, in particular in the Higgs sector. We consider the potential for discovery of composite Higgs models in Higgs pair production through photon collisions. This process is loop-generated, thus it provides access to all Higgs couplings and can show new physics effects in polarized and unpolarized cross-sections starting at relatively low collider energies. It is, therefore, relevant for all electron-positron colliders planned or in preparation. Sizeable deviations from the Standard Model predictions are present in a general class of composite Higgs models, as couplings of one or more Higgs bosons to fermions, or fermionic and scalar resonances, modify the destructive interference present in the Standard Model. We provide a comprehensive discussion, together with a complete setup for simulations, relevant for the production of a single vector-like quark at hadron colliders. Our predictions include finite width effects, signal-background interference effects and next-to-leading order QCD corrections. We explicitly apply the framework to study the single production of a vector-like quark $T$ with charge 2/3, but the same procedure can be used to analyse the single production of vector-like quarks with charge $-4/3$, $-1/3$, $2/3$ and $5/3$, when the vector-like quark interacts with the Standard Model quarks and electroweak bosons. Moreover, this procedure can be straightforwardly extended to include additional interactions with exotic particles. We provide quantitative results for representative benchmark scenarios characterised by the $T$ mass and width, and we determine the role of the interference terms for a range of masses and widths of phenomenological significance. Abstract

Composite Higgs models feature new strong dynamics leading to the description of the Higgs boson as a bound state arising from the breaking of a global (flavour) symmetry. These models generally include light states generated by the same dynamics, the detection of which may present the first observable signs of compositeness. One such state is a pseudo-scalar boson resulting from the breaking of a $U(1)$ symmetry common to most composite setups, and whose hints are expected to be visible through low-mass resonance searches at present and future hadron and lepton colliders. In this work we study the phenomenology of this pseudo-scalar field. We show that, for a light state, bottom quark loop effects dominantly impact the production cross section and considerably modify the decay pattern. Moreover, we make a case for targeted low-mass analyses at future lepton colliders, with an emphasis on high-luminosity machines aiming to operate at low centre-of-mass energies. We present a simplified outline of a search for this light pseudo-scalar at one such machine, considering electron-positron collisions at the $Z$-pole. We focus on a signature arising from the pseudo-scalar decay into a pair of hadronic taus and a production mode association with a pair of leptons of opposite electric charges, and compare cut and count methods with machine learning methods., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. The LHC BSM Reinterpretation Forum: et al., We report on the status of efforts to improve the reinterpretation of searches and measurements at the LHC in terms of models for new physics, in the context of the LHC Reinterpretation Forum. We detail current experimental offerings in direct searches for new particles, measurements, technical implementations and Open Data, and provide a set of recommendations for further improving the presentation of LHC results in order to better enable reinterpretation in the future. Abstract

We consider a color octet scalar particle and its exotic decay in the channel gluon-$\gamma$ using an effective Lagrangian description for its strong and electromagnetic interactions. Such a state is present in many extensions of the Standard Model, and in particular in composite Higgs models with top partial compositeness, where couplings to photons arise via the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. We find that final states with one or two photons allow for a better reach at the LHC, even for small branching ratios. Masses up to $1.2$ TeV can be probed at the HL-LHC by use of all final states. Abstract

We present a minimal model of asymptotic grand unification based on an $SU(5)$ gauge theory in a compact $S^1/(\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}'_2)$ orbifold. The gauge couplings run to a unified fixed point in the UV, without supersymmetry. By construction, fermions are embedded in different $SU(5)$ bulk fields. As a consequence, baryon number is conserved, thus preventing proton decay, and the lightest Kaluza-Klein tier consists of new states that cannot decay into standard model ones. We show that the Yukawa couplings can be either in the bulk or localized, and run to an asymptotically free fixed point in the UV. The lightest massive state can play the role of Dark Matter, produced via baryogenesis, for a Kaluza-Klein mass of about $2.4$ TeV., Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures. v2: Extended discussion of the Yukawa running

Abstract

We present a method to obtain a scalar potential at tree level from a pure gauge theory on nilmanifolds, a class of negatively-curved compact spaces, and discuss the spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism induced in the residual Minkowski space after compactification at low energy. We show that the scalar potential is completely determined by the gauge symmetries and the geometry of the compact manifold. In order to allow for simple analytic calculations we consider three extra space dimensions as the minimal example of a nilmanifold, therefore considering a pure Yang-Mills theory in seven dimensions., 17 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

This is the third out of five chapters of the final report [1] of the Workshop on Physics at HL-LHC, and perspectives on HE-LHC [2]. It is devoted to the study of the potential, in the search for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, of the High Luminosity (HL) phase of the LHC, defined as $3~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of $14~\mathrm{TeV}$, and of a possible future upgrade, the High Energy (HE) LHC, defined as $15~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data at a centre-of-mass energy of $27~\mathrm{TeV}$. We consider a large variety of new physics models, both in a simplified model fashion and in a more model-dependent one. A long list of contributions from the theory and experimental (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) communities have been collected and merged together to give a complete, wide, and consistent view of future prospects for BSM physics at the considered colliders. On top of the usual standard candles, such as supersymmetric simplified models and resonances, considered for the evaluation of future collider potentials, this report contains results on dark matter and dark sectors, long lived particles, leptoquarks, sterile neutrinos, axion-like particles, heavy scalars, vector-like quarks, and more. Particular attention is placed, especially in the study of the HL-LHC prospects, to the detector upgrades, the assessment of the future systematic uncertainties, and new experimental techniques. The general conclusion is that the HL-LHC, on top of allowing to extend the present LHC mass and coupling reach by $20-50\%$ on most new physics scenarios, will also be able to constrain, and potentially discover, new physics that is presently unconstrained. Abstract

Composite Higgs models based on SU(5)/SO(5) are characterised by the presence of custodial triplets, like the Georgi-Machacek model. We classify all the operators giving rise to the top mass and Higgs potential in presence of fermion partial compositeness, with top partners in two-index representations of SU(5). A detailed study of each operator allows us to find correlations in the couplings of Higgs and non-Higgs pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons, which depend only on one, two or three independent parameters. We also analyse the Higgs potential, finding that a misalignment along the custodial invariant triplet direction is forbidden by CP conservation. Avoiding custodial breaking allows us to select a handful of feasible models, which feature universal patterns in the scalar masses related to their transformation properties under the custodial symmetry. Finally, we briefly study the LHC phenomenology of the scalars, which are always below 1 TeV even for multi-TeV condensation scales, and find promising same-sign lepton final states enriched by hard photons., Comment: 59 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

We consider a realisation of composite Higgs models in the context of $SU(6)/ SO(6)$ symmetry, which features a custodial bi-triplet, two Higgs doublets and dark matter candidates. This model can arise from an underlying gauge-fermion theory. The general vacuum structure is explored using the top partial compositeness to generate a special vacuum characterised by a single angle aligned with the first Higgs doublet. We present the CP and Dark Matter $\mathbb{Z}_2$ parity in two different pNGB bases and analyse the spectra in the absence of tadpoles and tachyons. Abstract

We discuss the phenomenology associated with a resonant monotop collider signal, i.e. a signal in which a single top quark is resonantly produced in association with missing energy through an s-channel scalar exchange. We study both the bounds originating from dedicated monotop searches performed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, and the constraints associated with other processes that could be induced by a new physics context favouring monotop production at colliders. The latter class of constraints includes, in particular, the recasting of analyses from the LHC and the TeVatron. All theoretical calculations are performed at the next-to-leading order accuracy in QCD, and we finally combine all results to establish the present limits on the parameter space and test the relevance of the monotop signal at the LHC Run 2., 22 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

We propose simulation strategies for single production of third generation vector-like quarks at the LHC, implementing next-to-leading-order corrections in QCD and studying in detail their effect on cross sections and differential distributions. Abstract

We determine the current status of the fundamental composite electroweak dynamics paradigm after the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider experiments. Our analysis serves as universal and minimal template for a wide class of models with the two limits in parameter space being composite Goldstone Higgs models and Technicolor. This is possible because of the existence of a unified description, both at the effective and fundamental Lagrangian levels, of models of composite Higgs dynamics where the Higgs boson itself can emerge, depending on the way the electroweak symmetry is embedded, either as a pseudo-Goldstone boson or as a massive excitation of the condensate. We constrain the available parameter space at the effective Lagrangian level. We show that a wide class of models of fundamental composite electroweak dynamics, including Technicolor, are compatible with experiments. Abstract

We show that the presence of a lightish scalar resonance, $\sigma$, that mixes with the composite Goldstone-Higgs boson can relax the typical bounds found in this class of models. This mechanism, inbred in models with a walking dynamics above the condensation scale, allows for a low compositeness scale $f \gtrsim 400$ GeV, corresponding to a misalignment angle $\sin\theta \lesssim 0.6$, contrary to the common lore of a smaller angle. According to recent lattice results, the light $\sigma$ emerges thanks to a near-conformal phase above the condensation scale, consistent to the requirements from flavour physics. We study this effect in a general way, showing that it appears in all cosets emerging from an underlying gauge-fermion dynamics, in the presence of top partial compositeness. The scenario is testable both on the Lattice and experimentally, as it requires the presence of a second broad Higgs-like resonance, below 1 TeV, that can be revealed at the LHC in the $ZZ$ and $t\bar{t}$ channels., Comment: Extended version accepted for publication in EPJC. 16 pages, 7 figures (11 files)

Abstract

We investigate the production of heavy coloured scalars and vectors and their relevance at LHC for the study of vector-like quarks ($T$). These coloured states ($C$) are present in a large number of extensions of the standard model, in particular in composite models and in extra dimensional models. Assuming that these bosonic states are heavier than the vector-like quarks (VLQ), we consider their production through the process $p~p\rightarrow C\rightarrow tT$. Large QCD production cross-sections for $C$ enable us to probe heavier masses for the VLQ and thereby allowing to put stronger limits on the vector-like quarks which are produced in their decay chain. We adopt a universal analysis strategy by including leptons under the classification of `jets', thereby limiting the bias towards a specific combination of final state. We also study the possibility of disentangling these scenarios from supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model by using simple discriminants based on jet multiplicity and missing energy. We demonstrate that a simple set of cuts are sufficient to disentangle the VLQ signal from the backgrounds. In models with a moderate $B.R.(C\rightarrow Tt)$, the analysis enables one to get a hint of VLQ masses as heavy as 3 TeV., 13 Pages, 4 Figures

Abstract

The existence of new vector-like quarks is often predicted by models of new physics beyond the Standard Model, and the development of discovery strategies at colliders is the object of an intense effort from the high-energy community. Our analysis aims at identifying the constraints on and peculiar signatures of simplified scenarios containing \textit{two} vector-like quark doublets mixing with \textit{any} of the SM quark generations. This scenario is a necessary ingredient of a broad class of theoretically motivated constructions. Abstract

In the context of a simplified leptophilic Dark Matter (DM) scenario where the mediator is a new charged fermion carrying leptonic quantum number and the DM candidate is either scalar or vector, the complementarity of different bounds is analysed. In this framework, the extra lepton and DM are odd under a $\mathbb Z_2$ symmetry, hence the leptonic mediator can only interact with the DM state and Standard Model (SM) leptons of various flavours. We show that there is the possibility to characterise the DM spin (scalar or vector), as well as the nature of the mediator, through a combined analysis of cosmological, flavour and collider data. Abstract

The unification of gauge and top Yukawa couplings is an attractive feature of gauge-Higgs unification models in extra-dimensions. This feature is usually considered difficult to obtain based on simple group theory analyses. We reconsider a minimal toy model including the renormalisation group running at one loop. Our results show that the gauge couplings unify asymptotically at high energies, and that this may result from the presence of an UV fixed point. The Yukawa coupling in our toy model is enhanced at low energies, showing that a genuine unification of gauge and Yukawa couplings may be achieved., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure; new results, extended discussion, conclusions unchanged

Abstract

We investigate Higgs-boson pair production at the LHC when the final state system arises from decays of vector-like quarks coupling to the Higgs boson and the Standard Model quarks. Our phenomenological study includes next-to-leading-order QCD corrections, which are important to guarantee accurate predictions, and focuses on a detailed analysis of a di-Higgs signal in the four $b$-jet channel. Whereas existing Run II CMS and ATLAS analyses are not specifically designed for probing non-resonant, vector-like-quark induced, di-Higgs production, we show that they nevertheless offer some potential for these modes. Abstract

We consider present constraints on Two Higgs Doublet Models, both from the LHC at Run 1 and from other sources in order to explore the possibility of constraining a neutral scalar or pseudo-scalar particle lighter than the 125 GeV Higgs boson. Such a lighter particle is not yet completely excluded by present data. Abstract

We provide a non-linear realisation of composite Higgs models in the context of the SU(4)/Sp(4) symmetry breaking pattern, where the effective Lagrangian of the spin-0 and spin-1 resonances is constructed via the CCWZ prescription using the Hidden Symmetry formalism. We investigate the EWPT constraints by accounting the effects from reduced Higgs couplings and integrating out heavy spin-1 resonances. This theory emerges from an underlying theory of gauge interactions with fermions, thus first principle lattice results predict the massive spectrum in composite Higgs models. This model can be used as a template for the phenomenology of composite Higgs models at the LHC and at future 100 TeV colliders, as well as for other application. Abstract

This document is the final report of the ATLAS-CMS Dark Matter Forum, a forum organized by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations with the participation of experts on theories of Dark Matter, to select a minimal basis set of dark matter simplified models that should support the design of the early LHC Run-2 searches. A prioritized, compact set of benchmark models is proposed, accompanied by studies of the parameter space of these models and a repository of generator implementations. This report also addresses how to apply the Effective Field Theory formalism for collider searches and present the results of such interpretations., The authors would like to thank Daniel Whiteson for helping in the review of this document. We present a first study of the field spectrum on a class of negatively-curved compact spaces: nilmanifolds or twisted tori. This is a case where analytical results can be obtained, allowing to check numerical methods. We focus on the Kaluza-Klein expansion of a scalar field. Abstract

We study a class of six-dimensional models based on positive curvature surfaces (spherical 2-orbifolds) as extra-spaces. Using the Newman-Penrose formalism, we discuss the particle spectrum in this class of models. The fermion spectrum problem, which has been addressed with flux compactifications in the past, can be avoided using localised fermions. In this framework, we find that there are four types of geometry compatible with the existence of a stable dark matter candidate and we study the simplest case in detail. Using the complementarity between collider resonance searches and relic density constraints, we show that this class of models is under tension, unless the model lies in a funnel region characterised by a resonant Higgs s-channel in the dark matter annihilation., Comment: 38 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We explore unification and natural supersymmetry in a five dimensional extension of the standard model in which the extra dimension may be large, of the order of 1-10 TeV. Power law running generates a TeV scale A_ term allowing for the observed 125 GeV Higgs and allowing for stop masses below 2 TeV, compatible with a natural SUSY spectrum. We supply the full one-loop RGEs for various models and use metastability to give a prediction that the gluino mass should be lighter than 3.5 TeV for A_t, 34 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

We present the activities of the 'New Physics' working group for the 'Physics at TeV Colliders' workshop (Les Houches, France, 1-19 June, 2015). Our report includes new physics studies connected with the Higgs boson and its properties, direct search strategies, reinterpretation of the LHC results in the building of viable models and new computational tool developments. Abstract

We present a phenomenological theory of scalar particles that transform as a sextet and an octet of QCD interactions. These particles may arise as light bound states of a fundamental dynamics giving rise to a composite Higgs boson and partial compositeness for the top. As a concrete example, we discuss an explicit UV completion based on the SU(4)/Sp(4) coset, where QCD colour is carried by additional fundamental fermions charged under the confining gauge group. Top partners, as well as potentially even lighter coloured scalars, arise as bound states of the coloured fermions. We study production and detection at LHC Run I and II of the octet and sextet, setting lower limits on masses and couplings to Standard Model particles using existing 8 TeV analyses. We finally explore prospects for the ongoing 13 TeV Run II: we focus on final states with two same sign leptons, that have the potential to discriminate the sextet., Comment: 39 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables. Abstract

In view of the recent diboson resonant excesses reported by both ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, we suggest that a new weak singlet pseudo-scalar particle, $\eta_W$, may decay into two weak bosons while being produced in gluon fusion at the LHC. The couplings to the gauge bosons can arise from a Wess-Zumino-Witten anomaly term and thus we study an effective model based on the anomaly term as a well motivated phenomenological model. In models where the pseudo-scalar arises as a composite state, the coefficients of the anomalous couplings can be related to the fermion components of the underlying dynamics. Abstract

Scenarios of new physics where a single top quark can be produced in association with large missing energy (monotop) have been recently studied both from the theoretical point of view and by experimental collaborations. We revisit the originally proposed monotop setup by embedding the effective couplings of the top quark in an SU(2)L invariant formalism. We show that minimality selects one model for each of the possible production mechanisms: a scalar field coupling to a right-handed top quark and an invisible fermion when the monotop system is resonantly produced, and a vector field mediating the interactions of a dark sector to right-handed quarks for the non-resonant production mode. We study in detail constraints on the second class of scenarios, originating from contributions to standard single top processes when the mediator is lighter than the top quark and from the dark matter relic abundance when the mediator is heavier than the top quark., 24 pages, 7 figures; version accepted by JHEP

Abstract

The structure of the Higgs sector is a major issue in the quest of a detailed description of the electroweak interactions. Most of the effort is devoted to the study of the standard model--like Higgs boson at 126 GeV, however the experimental collaborations at the LHC are also searching for extra scalar particles whose presence may hint to an extended Higgs sector, typical of many extensions of the standard model. We study a model independent parametrisation of a scalar particle lighter than the 126 GeV Higgs boson, which may be easily implemented in the ongoing searches by ATLAS and CMS. Indeed many effective Lagrangians/parametrisations used at present for the description of the Higgs sector implicitly assume that no light particles other than the standard model ones are present in the spectrum. We therefore introduce a parametrisation of a two scalars model, one corresponding to the 126 GeV Higgs boson and the other to a lighter scalar. After the introduction of such a tool, we consider two typical examples falling in this category, in order to illustrate the use of our formalism: the two Higgs doublet model and the next to minimal supersymmetric standard model. Our results agree with the specific studies performed for these models. Furthermore, employing such a generic parametrisation allows us to translate the bounds to any model beyond the standard model falling into this class., 15 p, v2: References added. Abstract

The ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC have performed analyses on the existing data sets, studying the case of one vector-like fermion or multiplet coupling to the standard model Yukawa sector. In the near future, with more data available, these experimental collaborations will start to investigate more realistic cases. The presence of more than one extra vector-like multiplet is indeed a common situation in many extensions of the standard model. The interplay of these vector-like multiplet between precision electroweak bounds, flavour and collider phenomenology is a important question in view of establishing bounds or for the discovery of physics beyond the standard model. In this work we study the phenomenological consequences of the presence of two vector-like multiplets. We analyse the constraints on such scenarios from tree-level data and oblique corrections for the case of mixing to each of the SM generations. Abstract

In this paper we present an analysis strategy and a dedicated tool to determine the exclusion confidence level for any scenario involving multiple heavy extra quarks with generic decay channels, as predicted in several extensions of the Standard Model. We have created, validated and used a software package, called XQCAT (eXtra Quark Combined Analysis Tool), which is based on publicly available experimental data from direct searches for top partners and from Supersymmetry inspired searches. By means of this code, we recast the limits from CMS on new heavy extra quarks considering a complete set of decay channels. The resulting exclusion confidence levels are presented for some simple scenarios with multiple states and general coupling assumptions. Highlighting the importance of combining multiple topology searches to obtain accurate re-interpretations of the existing searches, we discuss the reach of the SUSY analyses so as to set bounds on new quark resonances. In particular, we report on the re-interpretation of the existing limits on benchmark scenarios with one and multiple pair-produced top partners having non-exclusive couplings to the third Standard Model generation of quarks., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, version accepted for publication in JHEP

Abstract

Theoretical and phenomenological implications of R-parity violation in supersymmetric theories are discussed in the context of particle physics and cosmology. Fundamental aspects include the relation with continuous and discrete symmetries and the various allowed patterns of R-parity breaking. Recent developments on the generation of neutrino masses and mixings within different scenarios of R-parity violation are discussed. The possible contribution of R-parity-violating Yukawa couplings in processes involving virtual supersymmetric particles and the resulting constraints are reviewed. Abstract

After the discovery of a scalar resonance, resembling the Higgs boson, its couplings have been extensively studied via the measurement of various production and decay channels on the invariant mass peak. Recently, it has been suggested the possibility to use off-shell measurements: in particular, CMS has published results based on the high- invariant mass cross section of the process $gg \to ZZ$, which contains the contribution of the Higgs. Abstract

Single production of vector-like top partners is becoming a major focus of new searches, as the increasing mass limits on vector-like quarks obtained by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations are such that single production is becoming competitive with respect to pair production. Typically searches focus on decays containing leptons in the final state in order to have less background from the Standard Model processes. However the current centre of mass energies available in the latest LHC runs limit the searches to low masses. Fully hadronic final states may be an alternative option for discovery, as they allow a larger number of signal events if backgrounds can be kept under control. We study the fully hadronic decay of a singly produced vector-like top partner and we show a strategy to extract the signal over the background, considering as a benchmark the 20 fb^-1 of data collected at 8 TeV with the latest run of the LHC., 11 pages, 8 figures. 50. Multi-tops at the LHC

Abstract

The experiments at the LHC are searching for many different final states that can hint to the presence of new physics beyond the Standard Model. One of the most interesting and promising sectors for these searches is that of the top quark, for both theoretical and phenomenological reasons linked to its large mass and to its possible special role in the electroweak symmetry breaking sector. We suggest that multi-top events, beyond the standard $t$-$\bar t$ and four top searches, can bring further insight in constraining and discovering physics beyond the Standard Model, taking advantage of experimental techniques similar to those used in present top-quark analyses. This is relevant both for the next data taking runs at the LHC and even more at higher luminosity and higher energy collider options, which are discussed for future LHC upgrades and future accelerators. In particular we consider six top and eight top final states, discussing the generic colour representations for beyond the Standard Model particles giving rise to those final state. We also discuss the limits which can be extracted by using the present analyses sensitive to four top final states, as well as the potential bounds from new searches we propose to experimental collaborations as an alternative., 16 pages
