This paper presents a buck-boost converter-based bipolar pulse generator, which is able to generate bipolar exponential pulses across a resistive load. The concept of the proposed approach depends on operating the involved buck-boost converters in discontinuous current conduction mode with high-voltage gain and enhanced efficiency. A full design of the pulse generator and its passive components is presented to ensure generating the pulses with the desired specifications (rise time, pulse width, and pulse magnitude) for a given load resistance and input dc voltage. In case of moderate pulsed output voltages (i.e. few of kV), one module of the presented bipolar generator can be employed. While in case of high-voltage pulsed output, multi-module version can be employed, where each module is fed from an isolated dc source and their outputs are connected in series. Simulation models for the proposed approach are built to elucidate their performance in case of one-module as well as multi-module based generator. Finally, a scaled-down prototype for one-module of buck-boost converter-based bipolar pulse generator is implemented to validate the proposed concept. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bipolar repetitive high-voltage pulse generators are commonly used in modern pulsed power applications. Conventionally, bipolar high-voltage pulses can be generated by adding a high-voltage H-bridge at the output stage of a unipolar high-voltage pulse generator which increases complexity and cost of the bipolar high-voltage pulse generator. In this paper, a boost-inverter-based bipolar high-voltage pulse generator with high-voltage gain is proposed. The proposed generator can provide high-voltage bipolar output pulses with the desired specifications from a low input dc voltage. The proposed generator is based on employing two bidirectional boost dc–dc converters, where the load is connected differentially between the boost converters’ output terminals. In the proposed approach, four controlled switches are required. Only two out of these four switches are rated at the high-voltage output level which affects positively the system cost. A detailed illustration of the proposed approach along with the design of its passive components is presented in this study. Pulsed electric field (PEF) can be used effectively in water treatment applications by passing infected water through two electrodes excited from a high voltage pulsed power supply which guarantees killing the harmful germs. In this paper, a new high-voltage pulse-generator with closed loop control of its output voltage is presented for treating water via underwater pulsed streamer corona discharge. The proposed generator is fed from a low AC voltage source (utility mains 220 V, 50 Hz) which makes it suitable for domestic applications. The proposed topology provides transformer-less operation which reduces the system size and enhances the overall efficiency. The proposed topology is based on capacitor-diode voltage multiplier (CDVM) circuits in conjunction with DC-DC converters (Boost and Buck-Boost converters). The non-deterministic nature of power fluctuations in renewable energy sources impose challenges to the design of DC voltage-droop controller in Multi-Terminal High-Voltage DC (MTDC) systems. Fixed droop control does not consider converters' capacity and system operational constraints. Consequently, an adaptive droop controller is counseled for appropriate power demand distribution. The previous adaptive droop control studies based on the converters' Available-Headroom (AH) have lacked the demonstration of the droop gain design during consecutive power disturbances. In this paper, the design of the adaptive DC voltage droop control is investigated with several approaches, based on the permitted converters' global and/or local AH and Loading Factor (LF). Modified adaptive droop control approaches are presented along with a droop gain perturbation technique to achieve the power-sharing based on the converters' AH and LF. In addition, the impact of Multi-Updated (MU), Single-Updated (SU), and Irregular-Updated (IU) droop gains is investigated. The main objective of the adaptive droop control design is to minimize the power-sharing burden on converters during power variations/consecutive disturbances while maintaining the constraints of the DC grid (i.e., voltage and power rating). The presented approaches are evaluated through case studies with a 4-terminal and 5-terminal radial MTDC networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
