This study examines the convergence of sustainability competencies in Spanish university curricula. The objective is to analyse and contrast opinions among university teaching staff and students from different fields of study in relation to the presence of competencies and curricular improvements concerning sustainability. The procedure comprised two surveys applied to professors (n
2 = 70) and students (n3 = 698). The instrument employed was the Register for Evaluating Curricular Sustainability at the University (RECSU), which permits the collation of data pertaining to sustainability-related transversal competencies, including sustainability values, the use of sustainable methodology in the classroom, the Sustainable Development Goals, and principles of action. In its entirety, this study's approach uses a mixed QUAN (qual) QUAL design. The results indicate which sustainability-aligned competencies and teaching practices are the most and least utilised by teaching staff, as well as which competencies present the greatest opportunity for improvement from the perspective of teaching staff. The findings highlight the relevance of empowering new generations through the development of transversal competencies in university studies. Sustainability competencies should be a priority to ensure that students are prepared to face future eco-social challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

We focus our research on the evolution of transversal competences in higher education, highlighting the need for educational institutions to adapt their practices to prepare students for the challenges of an ever-changing society. We argue that, in addition to disciplinary knowledge, it is essential to complement this knowledge with the development of transversal skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and effective communication, which are essential to adapt to the constant changes of the work environment and contribute significantly to society. We start by asking ourselves how the results vary in the formation of transversal competencies among teachers of Engineering and Social Sciences, justifying our interest in the need to train individuals capable of facing complex challenges, promoting an education that transcends the mere transmission of knowledge. We analyze the impact of this training on teacher performance and administrative management, comparing the evolution between two groups of teachers before and after their participation in a specific training section. The general objective was to analyze the differences in the professional implementation of transversal competencies according to disciplinary origin, while the specific objectives included evaluating the impact of training on teaching performance and exploring the relationship between research and the development of transversal competencies. Training in transversal competencies had a positive impact on the development of these skills in Engineering and Social Sciences teachers, although with some differences between the groups; Even so, challenges remain in terms of the systematic integration of these competencies into the curriculum and their assessment. Internationalization as part of globalization in Higher Education has impacted all substantive processes in a transversal manner and has conditioned the export of goods and services as part of the financing required for its development. In Cuba, the activity has been incorporated into the development strategies of Higher Education Institutions since 1992, its development has fluctuated and today it is considered that the potential of the organization is above the achievements obtained. The diagnosis carried out has revealed a considerable number of weaknesses that limit the effectiveness and efficiency of the activity, which is why it is considered that its management needs to be improved. The objective of this article is to propose a procedure that guarantees the necessary improvement in the Higher Education Institutions attached to the Ministry of Higher Education of Cuba. This study aims to understand how the “learning to learn” (LtL) competence is built into university curricula and the extent to which students are expected to learn to learn in college. We analyzed LtL components in the syllabi of Spanish universities, specifically in pedagogy and telecommunications engineering degrees, reviewing a total of 20,321 competencies set out to be developed over 228,000 hours of instruction. A theoretical model was employed to detect these components and we analyzed their association with disciplinary and transversal competencies. The results show an intention to teach LtL for the discipline and not simply as a transversal competence. We also observed a greater emphasis on information processing than on collaborative learning and motivation. We discuss the theoretical implications of this competence and how it can be transferred between disciplines in higher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interaction among countries, companies and individuals makes it essential to find better tools for data collection, in the framework of which trade intelligence becomes relevant as a process of exploration of indicative variables of the supply, demand and prices of a product at a global level or in specific niches. The objective of this work was to design a transversal training model that allows students of the Faculty of Economics, National University of Asunción (FCE-UNA) to improve their knowledge and practices on trade intelligence. Applied research, of a mixed type, was proposed, in which 277 students from the three careers of the FCE-UNA were surveyed. The approach was qualitative, using a cross-sectional analytical-descriptive and propositional methodology. Among the main findings, it is important to mention that students are generally unaware of the concept of trade intelligence and its implications. However, 89% of those surveyed expressed their interest in being trained in the subject. Finally, a project of academic formation in trade intelligence was proposed, with an active learning methodology, to promote the competitiveness of FCE-UNA students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Debating represents an active teaching–learning method in higher education. Engaging in debates helps to acquire and develop transversal skills, which are essential to successfully function in personal, academic, and professional spheres. In this quantitative, descriptive, and explanatory study, we analyse how attitudes included within transversal competences were acquired through a debate activity conducted as a part of the social work programme at the University of Alicante. A total of 74 students participated, with an average age of 22.34 years, the majority of which were women. The students were divided into two evaluation groups: a peer evaluation group and a teacher evaluation group. Using an ad hoc questionnaire, three categories of variables were studied: sociodemographic variables; organisational and activity evaluation variables; and variables relating to the acquisition of attitudes. The results indicated that debating favoured communication, innovation and entrepreneurship, social commitment, critical thinking, information management, autonomy and self-regulation, as well as teamwork. Variations were also found according to the university admission modality and the evaluation agent. These results highlight not only how useful debating can be as a pedagogical tool, but also the need to consider different contextual factors when implementing debate activities in the context of university studies. What do we understand by 'communicative interaction' in university settings? Most often, our approach is somewhat reductionist as we tend to envisage interactions confined to class time and particularly to the traditional teacher-led lecture. This article aims to provide a genre-based overview of the diverse communicative interactions that take place in higher education, of the actors and variables shaping them, and of the multiple areas for study and improvement that derive from such analysis. The insights it offers pursue fostering reflective teaching by helping lecturers and syllabus planners to respectively gain awareness and examine their communicative practices and the learning models proposed, which may emphasize certain transversal soft skills over others. The outcome of this study may open up fresh avenues of research within the frames of English medium instruction (EMI) and languages for specific purposes (LSP). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research conducts an analysis of gender inequality in the participation of women and men in different higher education training fields and its connection with labor market gender gaps present in Mexico. For this, data from the two spheres are presented for the period 2020-2021, emphasizing that gender roles are transferred to education and the economy in a transversal way, tending to perpetuate and reproduce inequalities between women and men in a structural way. Concluding that the data makes visible the need to break paradigms about gender gaps in the fields of study as well as to strengthen the linkage schemes between the institution and the labor market in order not to undermine the work of graduation. EMPLOYABILITY ,STUDENT attitudes ,EXPERIENTIAL learning ,COLLEGE students ,TRANSVERSAL lines ,LIKERT scale ,SOFT skills - Abstract
We are living in times of great transformations within the field of education and the labor market. These changes are connected and have to do with an expanded knowledge society, whose implications reach the levels of employability in times of uncertainty. Within this framework, the main purpose of our study is to perform a theoretical analysis and an empirical approach to the influence that transversal competences (soft skills) may have on the degree of employability of university students. We have identified some of those competences and we have tested them with a sample of 83 employers and 1249 students using a Likert scale. Our results show the interest of employers in the mastery of transversal competences and inequalities in terms of students' perception thereof. We did not find any significant differences between students starting their degree and those who were about to complete it. However, we did find differences between the students who participated in experiential activities and those who did not, in favor of the former. Due to the importance of experiential learning in our results, we dedicate our discussion to theoretically exploring whether the pedagogical approach of Service-Learning (SL) might contribute to a better connection between transversal competences and employability. Aligning learning goals with the needs of the labour market is a difficult task for universities, especially in the present day. Although organisations seek professionals with flexible and varied skills, universities often underestimate the importance of cross-curricular skills. Thus, this article aims to identify the perception of recent graduates as to the importance of the transversal skills that they acquired and developed at university and the ways in which they are now applied in the work environment. In this exploratory study, we sent a questionnaire to recent graduates that allowed us to analyse the development and applicability of these competencies in organisations. The results are further discussed within the broader framework of how universities adapt to the strong socio-economic challenges that characterise current times and the integration of recent graduates into the labour market. The aim of this article is to provide a systematic review of the transversal competencies for employability in university graduates from an employer's perspective, with consideration to the importance of the topic in the cross-national context. The PRISMA statement was used to guide the methodology and the reporting for the systematic review. The data collection produced 52 articles from the Scopus and Web of Science (JCR only) databases in the ten years between 2008 and 2018. The analysis focused on the characteristics of the employers and organizations, the methods and the instruments for evaluating transversal competencies, and the most highly valued competencies, both internationally and by continent. One of the main contributions is the creation of a classification that is made up of 41 transversal competencies that are grouped into five dimensions. The results show that employers attributed more importance to the competencies in the dimensions of Job-related basic (JRB) skills, Socio-relational (SR) skills, and Self-management (SM) skills. We conclude that Higher education institutions need to incorporate "pedagogies for employability", which will strengthen the link between the academic setting and the socio-occupational reality and will ensure that graduates make a suitable transition to the world of work. In French higher education, the relevance of lectures is regularly a subject of debate, especially with regard to the teaching practices implemented in this teaching environment. While research has repeatedly focused on this type of teaching method, few studies have attempted to describe the interactional practices of teachers during lectures empirically, or to identify the factors that influence these practices. Based on data collected among 276 teachers at a French university, this article aims to describe the nature of these practices but also the links that they have with individual and contextual factors, among which the transversal skills of teachers are considered. Specifically, our results lead to reconsider the idea according to which lectures hinder any form of teacher-students interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The assessment process in higher education considers four aspects: assessment agents, procedure, content, and scoring. In this study, we delve into the who. We analyze the role of transversal competence assessment agents in the framework of professional internships in university master's degree programs, comparing the suitability of their assessment based on their degree of experience in each master's program. Four university master's degree programs, in the field of human and social sciences, were analyzed. To ensure the degree of expert competence among the participating judges, the K coefficient was used. Two expert and two nonexpert judges independently assessed the critical incidents narrated by the students and inquired about the competences described in the curricula. The reliability index between the assessments from expert and nonexpert judges was analyzed. The results show greater reliability among the assessments of expert judges compared to nonexperts. As a result, we conclude the importance of basing the selection of assessors on objective expert competence and not on criteria more linked to academic management. It is also necessary to include the critical incident method as a systematic information collection system to explicitly assess transversal competences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recommendations of the European Parliament and of the Council (2006) defined Transversal Skills as those considered necessary for personal fulfilment, active citizenship, social inclusion, and employment. This study employed empirical qualitative and quantitative methodologies to investigate and understand the perceived impact of COVID-19 restrictions and increased reliance on remote education technologies upon transversal skills development, from the perspective of students of Initial Teacher Education at Stranmillis University College, Northern Ireland. The resulting knowledge would contribute to better informed planning for transversal skills development in Higher Education, and would additionally be of importance to stakeholders affected by COVID-19. This study indicates that more extensive integration of online learning within future higher education programmes would significantly improve the development of many transversal skills, but that a balance should be maintained between online and face-to-face engagement to prevent the regression of other transversal skills and to protect mental health. The aim is to find out their perception about the competencies and learning outcomes for sustainability that students develop through their participation in the international cross-border project of the Bordeaux-Euskampus "Ocean i3: Blue Skills for the Development of the Blue Economy in the Basque-Aquitaine Cross-Border Coast". The study population consisted of all the participants of the project: 37 students majoring in Biology, Law, Advertising, Business Administration and Management, Pedagogy, Criminology, Nursing, Engineering and Sports Sciences at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the University of Bordeaux (UBx), and 33 undergraduate and postgraduate lecturers from both universities. The article describes the procedure followed for their validity and reliability, and annexes both questionnaires. They may be transferable to other studies that share the same or similar objectives of this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Assess one's own abilities realistically and critically is the key for a continuous adaptation to the changing labor market conditions. The university system must train the future engineers to rate their own performance accurately, reducing biases as self-benevolence. This paper analyzes, with a sample of students of Industrial Engineering, the accuracy of self-assessment in oral presentations, using a scoring rubric. The results of several statistical tests indicate that students are good assessors of others work, but benevolent with their own work. In addition, men evaluate themselves significantly higher than women do. Finally, self-assessment tend to compensate for others assessments, mainly in the case of students considered worse by teachers. These results point to the need of including self-assessment activities in an increasing number to improve students' performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HIGHER education ,TRANSVERSAL lines ,EDUCATORS ,SOCIALIZATION ,ACTIVE listening ,TEACHING methods ,EMPATHY - Abstract
Higher Education plays a decisive role in the training of competent professionals and active, responsible and critical-thinking citizens. In addition to acquiring rigorous technical–scientific knowledge specific to their degree, students are also expected to develop a range of transversal skills essential for a successful academic and professional career. This article aims to narrate an experience of obtaining a Social Education degree. Since its origins, it has been assumed that students in this field should: (a) acquire specific technical–scientific knowledge; (b) get to know themselves as individuals; and (c) develop a set of transversal skills essential to relationships, some of the most salient being active listening, empathic capacity, acceptance and respect for others, trust, curiosity, creativity, confidentiality and a reflective attitude. It thus aggregates a set of Curricular Units whose main purpose is the personal, social and professional development of students, formed within active methodologies. Sociodrama is one such methodology of teaching and learning in the context of two Curricular Units of this degree, and this article focuses on my experience lived within the scope of these units. EMPLOYABILITY ,DISTANCE education ,JOB hunting ,COLLEGE graduates ,TRANSVERSAL lines ,ONLINE education - Abstract
Since higher education qualifications and digital transition are considered key factors for economic development and individual opportunities, distance learning has been presented as a solution to improve the labor force's skills and employability. However, such links were seldom studied systematically in specific contexts, and doubts exist regarding online programs. Based on the results of three successive follow-up surveys to the graduates of the Portuguese distance learning public university (Universidade Aberta), from 2011 to 2018 (n = 1358), our article examines the graduates' perception of acquired transversal competences, in relation to employability and social mobility gains. The statistical analysis points out a positive perception of transversal competences development, especially analytical capacity, autonomy, and communication, although some concerns were raised regarding digital skills, teamwork, job search skills, and social capital. The impacts on employability and socioeconomic mobility are positive for most students, but variable according to analyzed competences, and tend to occur mostly through internal mobility rather than through job search skills or entrepreneurship. Although exploratory, such findings allow some final considerations regarding the effective ability of higher education distance learning to enhance economic growth and employability, through transversal competences, as well as to sketch some suggestions to improve such ability.
