Purpose: To characterize the zonal distribution of three-dimensional (3D) T1 mapping in the hip joint of asymptomatic adult volunteers., Materials and Methods: This study included 10 volunteers (3 males and 7 females with a mean age of 26.5 years; range, 24-31 years). MRI protocol included standard sequences for hip imaging and a dual-flip-angle 3D gradient-echo (GRE) sequence with volumetric interpolated breathhold examination (VIBE) postcontrast administration. Seven radial cuts were created clockwise around the femoral neck by using multi-planar reconstruction., Results: Analysis of the radial distribution revealed an increase of T1-values toward the superior regions. T1-values differed between the peripheral and central portions. The standard deviation (SD) ranged from 76.2 ms to 124.1 ms in the peripheral zone, and from 69.1 ms to 112.9 ms in the central zone. In both zones, SD was low in the superior regions compared with the anterior and posterior regions of the joint. Based on the high intra- (0.95) and interobserver (0.87) agreement, normative data from this study will prepare the foundation for further studies of dGEMRIC and T1 in the hip., Conclusion: We noted a radial T1 mapping pattern with higher values in the superior zone that was not statistically significant and a notable trend in zonal distribution between peripheral and central zones. The analysis and treatment of hips with healed Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) differs substantially from the treatment in the acute phase of the disease. More specifically, the treating orthopaedic surgeon is often faced with a complex three-dimensional pathomorphology of the hip that is difficult to understand and correct. To date, none of the current classification systems provide a useful decision-making algorithm with regards to the type of surgical intervention necessary to improve hip function in patients with sequelae of LCPD. The conceptual recognition of the femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and the ability to safely dislocate the hip have revolutionised our diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm for joint-preserving surgery of hips with structural residuals of LCPD. We present a systematic approach to analyse femoral and acetabular pathomorphologic features. The resulting pathomechanisms and the surgical treatment options are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The purpose of this report is to describe a new lesion, the "Hip Antero-superior Labral Tear with Avulsion of Rectus femoris (HALTAR)". This injury may be seen in both adolescent and skeletally mature athletes and shares several characteristics with the "Superior Labral tear from Anterior to Posterior (SLAP)" lesion in the shoulder. Methods: We present a case example, as well as a detailed anatomic description of the pathological condition. Results: As the rectus femoris crosses two joints it is exposed to substantial forces during muscle contraction. Considering the peri-articular origin of the reflected head at the superior aspect of the acetabular rim, a powerful eccentric contraction of the rectus femoris muscle or traction related to sudden knee flexion may cause an avulsion injury of the rectus femoris as well as a concomitant labral tear. Conclusions: A strain injury of the rectus femoris muscle, which is common in young athletic patients, may cause a concomitant tear of the acetabular labrum. Therefore, we recommend further diagnostic work-up in cases with prolonged hip pain and impaired hip function following an AIIS injury in order to identify any associated peri- and intra-articular damage.
