At the intersection of memory and feminist studies, this article examines the issue of suffrage and feminist monumental commemoration in the United States. Starting from the deficit of statues representing female historical figures in the public space, it analyzes the conception and reception of two important monuments honoring women's suffrage (Portrait Monument 1921 and the Women's Rights Pioneers Monument 2020). While those monuments have somewhat broken the "bronze ceiling", they testify to the mechanics of exclusion and inclusion at work both in the construction of history and memory. Then, the article takes on a broader perspective, questioning the extent to which traditional monuments, as products of a patriarchal culture and memory, can properly commemorate modern feminism. The essay identifies two trends, one consisting of transforming the bronze through various strategies, the other of "breaking the bronze" by replacing it with other materials and proposing new memory frameworks belonging to what James E. Young has labeled countermonuments. Still, the article ultimately questions the limits of the monument itself and points to the notion of interactive spaces as perhaps the most adequate sites of memory for the complex, multifaceted, contested, and contemporary movement that feminism(s) stand(s) for. This study introduces a postcolonial feminist analysis of Assia Djebar's Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade focusing on portraying Algerian women's experiences during and post-French colonization. It explores the intertwining of gender and colonialism and how they collectively shape these women's lives. Central to this analysis is the role women played in resisting colonial oppression, examining their navigation and challenge of patriarchal structures within their societies under colonial rule. This research highlights the strategies Algerian women employ to assert their agency and preserve their cultural identity amidst the oppressive forces of colonization. Furthermore, the paper delves into the complexities of identity formation within a postcolonial context, examining the impact of colonialism on women's bodies and psyches. The study also critiques the subversion of traditional narrative structures in Djebar's autobiography, emphasizing the incorporation of alternative voices and perspectives that highlight the often marginalized experiences of Algerian women. Djebar's primary goal is to give voice and visibility to women's experiences, which have been largely overlooked in texts that explore the relationship between colonized people and their history. This article analyzes the life of Amy Heminway Jones and her contributions to the development of international thought and the transnational networks that promoted internationalism and the international mind during the early twentieth century. Building on the work of Patricia Owens and Mary Niles Maack the article situates analysis of Jones's work and accomplishments within attempts to overcome the exclusion of historical women from the development of international thought and internationalism. The article places Jones's work at the nexus of a vast transnational network and movement to promote new perceptions about international affairs and the world through programs such as the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's International Mind Alcoves and International Relations Clubs. The article demonstrates the extent to which Jones contributed to these efforts and the ways in which her position within the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace provided her with privileges and authority rare for a woman of her age and educational background. This microhistory is a study of one woman's efforts in New York City between 1907 and 1911 to join the efforts of three local feminist organizations—Greenwich House, the National Consumers League, and the Women's Trade Union League (WTUL)—that were combining the energies of women from the industrial working class, middle class, and upper class in sustained drives to improve the working conditions and wages of women factory and steam laundry workers. One woman who devoted herself to these three organizational cross-class initiatives was Carola Woerishoffer (1885–1911). Microhistory is a method of studying the past that makes use of remnants of evidence still available about people, organizations, or communities that have been partially or completely forgotten. History is a projection of realities from the historian's lens and parameters. The popularity and acceptance of historical accounts depend much on hegemonic structures and knowledge. The Dalit community was marginalized within the Indian economic, social, and political historiography. Gradually, with the rise of Dalit consciousness, men--the better-positioned gender of the community--tried to express their vulnerabilities from a masculinist perspective. The literature written also projected women only as extensions of male protagonists. Though the traumas Dalit women have faced due to intersectional realities are separate from that of men, they could not find a place in early literature as complete entities, entitled to be acknowledged as such. The trade union movements also sidelined the issues of Dalit women laborers. To date, issues of Dalit women's property rights, longevity, education, and empowerment are largely androcentric, as the state's schemes and policies are majorly heteronormative and male centric. The reason why we need to keep invoking the past and history is to assert that the present condition of Dalit women has its roots in the past and their issues and voices continue to remain on the margins despite the rich social experiences they carry and represent. The tumultuous events of 1968 had a profound and lasting impact on society, culture and politics on a global scale. In Britain, the effects of the upswing in radicalism were powerfully registered in developments and departures in cultural and intellectual life. Recent contributions to the history of the intellectual Left during this period, including the traditions of the New Left, cultural studies, and feminism, have documented many of the decisive shifts in theoretical outlooks and thematic focus. Less frequently acknowledged, however, has been the formation of a distinctive 'politics of knowledge', which contested established hierarchies and norms of academic work through forms of collective and democratic practice. This article argues that this project was a decisive outcome and achievement of the post-68 conjuncture, becoming part of a much broader democratising front in the 1970s and 80s that centred upon sites of cultural and intellectual expression. The key features of this alternative apparatus of intellectual production are explored in the context of the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies, History Workshop, and the scholarly endeavours of second-wave feminism, which paid critical attention to the possibilities, tensions and open contradictions intrinsic to this way of combining politics and intellectual practice. The history of the women's movements and women's involvement in civic causes and actions shows that commitment to women's causes is no guarantee that other human rights issues will be supported. Instances of racism and other prejudices that have impacted women's groups in the United States will be used to illustrate the contradiction, and corollary patterns from the present will be used to show that the disconnect between promoting women's causes and other pressing human rights issues remains. I will use the exemplar of citation practices as one aspect of contemporary professional behavior that may contribute to the ongoing invisibility of accomplishments by women and scholars of color of any gender. I will also demonstrate some tools that, combined with better self-awareness, can improve the visibility of all members of underrepresented groups. The challenge we face is to convert awareness of the complex intersections between gender and racial issues into the application of feminist values across the full spectrum of human experience. This article compares Traversay's Les amours de Zémédare et Carina (1806) and Bergeaud's Stella (1859), which portray Caribbean landscapes altered by plantation economy. Examining these understudied novels through the lens of ecofeminism and eco-postcolonialism allows us to understand how Francophone colonial authors perceived the history of the land to be inseparable from socio-political history on both a regional and an international level, and also how the authors portray new Caribbean identities as dependent on landscape and the role of women. The article discusses what the authors refer to as the visibility of feminism in various Olympic Games events over the years, and it mentions narratives of progress, equality, and failure in sports journalism, feminist sports media studies, and the potential trivialization of women athletes in mass media. Studies on women in nationalist guerrilla movements, such as in Sri Lanka and Angola, find that women's militancy has not lead to changes in traditional patriarchal structures. Contradicting much of the current literature, today Kurdish women have gained substantial equality in the PKK, and the Party's ideology actively promotes a subversion of traditional gender structures. Using existing interviews with militants and academic literature, I will give a nuanced view of the progressive transition of the PKK's political ideology on women. During the early 1990s, the PKK's emancipatory stance and reinterpretation of Kurdish myths were employed pragmatically to increase women's participation. However, patriarchal structures remained unchanged and female militants were merely handed over from a patriarchal family to a patriarchal party. Despite this, the autonomous Women's Army (YJAK) became a "safe space" from which self-organized and armed women actively influenced the PKK's ideology and practice. Legitimized by the PKK's own emancipatory propaganda, the YJAK pushed the party towards a more radical feminist agenda by loyally aligning themselves to the "father figure" Öcalan during setbacks in the late 1990s. The current prominence of the PKK's feminist agenda suggests female militants can undermine and challenge patriarchal structures from within the structure of a nationalist movement. This paper is about the clinical principle of informed choice-the hallmark feature of the midwifery model of care in Ontario, Canada. Drawing on ethnographic history interviews with midwives, I trace the origins of the idea of informed choice to its roots in the social movement of midwifery in North America in the late 1960s and 1970s. At that time informed choice was not the distinctive feature of midwifery but was deeply embedded what I call midwifery's feminist experiment in care. But as midwifery in Ontario transitioned from a social movement to a full profession within the formal health care system, informed choice was strategically foregrounded in order to make the midwifery model of care legible and acceptable to a skeptical medical profession, conservative law makers, and a mainstream clientele. As mainstream biomedicine now takes up the rhetoric of patient empowerment and informed choice, this paper is at once a nuanced history of the making of the concept and also a critique of the ascendant 'regime of choice' in contemporary health care, inspired by the reflections of the midwives in my study for whom choice is impossible without care. This contribution engages with the transnational connections established by second-wave feminists in socialist Yugoslavia. The essay focuses on the writings of Zagreb-based anthropologist Lydia Sklevicky (1952–1990) and Belgrade-based sociologist Žarana Papić (1949–2002), two founders of women’s studies in the region, who were also among the organisers of the first international women’s studies seminar, held in Portorož in 1976 and of the first international second-wave feminist conference, held in Belgrade in 1978. Through the analysis of linguistic and political practices of translations that occurred between the late 1970s and early 1980s, I demonstrate that feminists in Zagreb and Belgrade took an active part in transnational feminist dialogues taking place at the time across Europe and beyond. Texts by feminist authors from the United States, the UK, Italy and France were often translated into Serbo-Croatian, and practices of translation became an integral part of pioneering feminist interventions, contributing to redefinitions of local debates and to the unravelling of patriarchal practices in a socialist society that had allegedly solved its ‘woman question’. The paper addresses the pressing question of why, in Russia, gender studies in history still have to prove their worth in the Russian academic world — and in the general public; why they operate in two discourses, and how common ground can be found between these. The first discourse is that of traditional gender roles which tends to legitimize the role of a woman as important but complementary with regard to the role of a man. The second discourse casts serious doubt on the naturalness or the essentialist predicament of the mutual complementarity of gender roles. By applying the gender perspective to the concept of Orientalism elaborated by Edward Said, the article debates how the Orient is not only a cultural construction, but also a sexual one. This lens is able to disclose the gender rhetoric through which the Western feminist eye has framed the ‘Other Woman’, depicting her as bounded by cultural ties. This is well exemplified by the stereotype of the Muslim woman as veiled, victim and powerless. The deconstructive strategy and the intersectional approach will fruitfully interact with the vivid experience of some Italian and British Muslim women activists, to show that the agency of Muslim women emerges in different contexts, thus breaking the Western mainstream essentialist perspective. The concept of fluid identity is proposed to make sense of the processes of identity formation with a focus on the intertwining of religious, gender and political dimensions vis-à-vis controversial practices such as the veil and arranged marriages. It is the voices of these women that challenge and re-signify fundamental principles such as democratic citizenship and personal autonomy, creating the basis for a transnational feminism that, from the recognition of women’s specificities and global inequalities, proves able to devise shared, more equitable and empowering pathways. This study uses repeated Cox Proportional Hazards models to explore the characteristics significant in predicting social assistance (SA) exit rates in Ontario, Canada. The results indicate that gender, age, immigration status, family structure, and presence of children significantly affect the likelihood of SA exit. Interpreting these findings through a critical feminist lens, I highlight the structural barriers that potentially influence people’s trajectories. Social policies that might better address the lives of women and other groups are explored, and a human rights framework is discussed as one avenue to advance poverty reduction efforts. Over the past decades, the rhetoric surrounding breastfeeding promotion policy has been increasingly focused on couching formula feeding in terms of “risk” rather than, as had been the norm, focusing on the “benefits” of breastfeeding. We examine this major policy shift in breastfeeding promotion and public health efforts. Analyzing qualitative data collected from 214 expectant mothers exposed to differently worded breastfeeding promotion materials, we identify several overwhelming trends in evaluations of the materials by those women exposed to “risk” language. Melting Pot Ottakring!? Social distinction and disciplinary efforts at the urban margins. A Project report. Processes of social distinction and disciplining efforts on the urban margins can be explored historically in different areas such as housing and social politics, both communal and private. During a two-year research project, scholars based at the Kreisky-Archive in Vienna, together with students at a local grammar school (Gymnasium Maroltingergasse) have been investigating these phenomena in relation to early twentieth-century Ottakring, a Viennese suburb. The suburbs of the growing metropolis inhabited by the poor were perceived as the 'other side of civilization'. This view was accompanied by fascination as well as processes of boundary-drawing and stigmatization and the responses led to various interventions into the suburban spaces concerned. In two case-studies the authors analyze such interventions with a focus on the fantasies and fears concerning the suburban 'other': The first focuses on the Ottakringer Notstandsbauten, a shanty town for poor workers with many children which was built by the municipal government in 1911 as a reaction to the rampant housing shortage and homelessness in the urban region. The second focuses on the welfare organisation Wiener Settlement, founded in 1901 by members of the liberal women's movement. The association's estate, accessible at the Sammlung Frauennachlässe, University of Vienna, was a primary source for examinating the Viennese Settlement. The work of feminist scholars, activists, therapists, and theorists has continuously impacted the United States and international cultural narrative since the radical days of the 1960s and 1970s. This special issue was created to highlight contributors to this remarkable transformation by documenting the narratives of their lives and careers. Portugal and Spain underwent dramatic transformations between 1974 and the early 1980s, transitioning from dictatorships to democracies. In this article I explore why Portugal was faster than Spain in adopting key gender-rights policies (e.g., divorce, equal pay, state feminism) during the period in question. Bridging insights from the democratization, social movement, and women’s studies literatures, I argue that Portugal’s accelerated policy path on women’s rights can be explained by three complex factors: (1) the nature of the revolutionary transition, which structured options for women’s movements and for institutional actors; (2) the configuration of movement-party alliances; and (3) supranational pressures to reorganize the state-civil society relationship. The study contributes to the engendering of democratization processes in Iberia by paying close attention to the interconnected agency of women’s movements with other political actors at a time of regime transformation. In her Feminist Edges of the Qur 'an, Aysha Hidayatullah argues that certain Qur'anic verses are incorrigibly male-privileging and are themselves privileged. Hence, egalitarian readings of the Qur'an are unsupported and unsupportable. If, as egalitarians propose, such verses are unjust, then either the Qur'an is not God's word or God is unjust. By contrast (1) I contend that no evidence suggests any Qur'anic verses are incorrigibly male- privileging, (2) I provide or indicate egalitarian readings for relevant contenders, (3) I note that no Qur'anic evidence supports the primacy of any such verse. Finally, since controverting egalitarian readings of such verses are available, the logical form of Hidayatullah's argument merely shows that if they are read to exhibit injustice, those readings cannot be God's word. This paper aims to cast light on specifically French constructions of gender, citizenship and nationhood and articulate two bodies of work, one dealing with political mobilizations of racialized minorities in the French context, and the other dealing with gender concerns in urban policy. Emerging social movements in the urban area of Paris are having to take position in a context in which a normative 'state feminism' is being used to stigmatize working-class neighbourhoods in the banlieues as well as their male inhabitants. This paper considers the 'double bind' in which feminist activists, and women more generally, find themselves as a result. It argues that some formerly silenced groups are being granted space for expression by the current foregrounding of 'women' in urban policy. Drawing on bell hooks' insights on the margin/centre tension in feminist theory as a useful way of thinking about the spatial dimension of these issues, the paper looks at one group in particular that defines itself and its strategies in spatial terms. Feminist theorists in geography and beyond have long been calling for an ethic of care to be considered alongside justice as a normative ideal that can assist us in repairing our world. In urban theory this call has largely remained unheard as an ethic of care remains absent from theorisations of what comprises a just city. In this paper I argue for care to be considered alongside justice as an equally important ethic in our search for justice in the city. I develop the concept of care-full justice, which assists us in negotiating the inherent tension between the normative and situated in the search for the ideals, and actually existing expressions, of justice and care in the city. This article explains the motivations for and developments of anti-Semitic tendencies within the early Italian women’s movement between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the First World War. The analysis of the discourses and events in question, hitherto neglected in relevant historical research, is based on the archives of secular and Catholic women’s organizations, their publications and personal archives. The first part of the article focuses on Jewish-Catholic relations in the early Italian women’s movement. The second part examines the increasing radicalization of anti-Jewish discourse among Catholic activists from the Libyan war in 1911/12 onwards, and the transition towards an overtly anti-Semitic polemic. The study puts forward the thesis that the strong anti-secular tendencies of organized Catholic women in Italy were at the latest from 1912 onwards replaced by anti-Jewish prejudices, which were to intensify considerably during Fascism. As the first territory and state where women voted in the U.S., and in fact the first place in the world where women exercised full enfranchisement, Wyoming’s past should raise pressing questions about the history of women’s suffrage. However, scholars typically explain the unusual event as a political hoax, a joke, or an effort to increase the population of the fledgling territory. At the heart of the scholarly treatment of Wyoming suffrage lies the controversial figure of Esther Hobart Morris. Upheld as the ‘mother of woman suffrage’ in local lore, and viewed as a false heroine by most historians, Morris embodies the contradictions of western suffrage. In this essay, I reinsert Morris into the history of suffrage in Wyoming and analyze how Wyomingites remember and commemorate the story of Morris from the 1890s to the 1970s. By taking the symbolic role of Esther Morris seriously, I argue that suffrage in Wyoming mattered, not only to the women who exercised the vote but also to the collective identity of Wyomingites. I suggest that the conflation of Esther Morris with the Wyoming pioneer ultimately created a radical space of possibility for western women throughout the twentieth century. I show how Esther Morris provided a critical example of independent, western femininity that Wyoming women have since mobilized to demand their rights and fashion their own forms of transgressive womanhood. Response to commentaries on “Functionalism, Darwinism, and the Psychology of Women: A Study in Social Myth” is organized around three themes and a question. The first theme is the importance of knowing the history of the study of women, gender, and sexuality. Second is the importance of what might be called “positive gatekeepers,” those in our field who have some degree of power or who may be better positioned to support our endeavors or be in a position to open doors to professional advancement. Third is a core feature of feminist psychology: The importance of acknowledging the ways in which social values are inherent in the research process. Why should anyone care about long-dead 19th-century scientists’ thoughts about the differences between women and men? And what does such a paper have to say to our contemporary concerns? I believe that knowledge of this history is invaluable to the health and progress of feminist psychology. This history, when viewed through an intersectional lens, can give us insight into the complex way in which values can constrict research questions and methods, can narrow and oversimplify what counts as “data,” and can be used as a regressive instrument to shore up the sociocultural status quo. In this paper I first briefly review the context in which “Functionalism, Darwinism, and the Psychology of Women” (hereinafter Functionalism/Darwinism) was written. Then I examine what the addition of an intersectionality perspective to that work adds to our understanding of the history of the psychology of women and gender. I focus on the intersection of gender and race (and briefly touch on social class) because these were critical to 19th-century scientific justifications for existing status and power relations. 1975 was United Nations International Women's Year. It was also the year of the Pigott Report, Museums in Australia. This report identified and encouraged the rise of history and its move into museums, which was then facilitated by state sesquicentennials and the Bicentennial of 1988. The period between 1975 and the opening of the National Museum of Australia in 2001 saw a major shift in the place of history in the public culture of Australia. This article traces the relationship between the rise of history, more specifically social history, in museums and the impact of feminism and feminists on those cultural institutions. It documents a period of activism and change, as debate raged about whose history was represented in exhibitions and collections and the field was transformed by the entry of professional history curators. The late 1980s and first half of the 1990s appear to have been a high point of public discourse about women, history and representation within the museum sector. However, feminism and feminists have had a significant impact on the practice of social history curatorship in Australia, and, in turn, on Australian public culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I connect two contemporary Australian examples of craftivism, Casey Jenkins’s performance art piece ‘Casting Off My Womb’ and the Knitting Nannas Against Gas in Lismore, NSW, to explore histories of feminism, performance art and activism. I argue that these public acts of knitting are disruptive, they challenge expectations and disturb order. I highlight some of the complexities in feminism’s relationship with domesticity, noting tensions, but also the ways meanings shift and change. The potential scope of craftivism is rich, with protests spanning from the body and reproductive rights to preventing environmental degradation. In exploring these examples of craftivism, I argue that linking contemporary craftivist practices to histories of feminist activism can highlight the persistence of feminist disturbance across time. Synopsis Home sewing is experiencing a revival in Western countries and alongside this has emerged a vibrant online presence of what I call digital dressmakers. Yet sewing has failed to elicit the same level of scholarly interest as other craft revivals. In light of the historically problematic relationship between domestic cultures and feminism, this paper offers the first empirical exploration of the politics of contemporary sewing, and asks; in what ways can home dressmaking be conceptualised as an intentional engagement with feminism, and how might it contribute to the goals of feminism, without explicit intentionality? The paper draws on an analysis of sewing blogs and argues that within the digital dressmaking community there is evidence that sewists use their blogs to critically consider their craft in a range of ways including its relationship to feminism, as well as undertaking practices that connect with the feminist goals of social justice and community-building. This paper argues that, despite significant increases in the number of women professors and the growth of feminist political science, transformative change hasn't occurred in how conventional political scientists think about politics. "Transformative change" requires the successful mainstreaming of gender-focused knowledge and the use of "gender" as a category of analysis in studies of politics. The article first explores the insights of leading feminist political scientists in the five Anglo-American democracies, about why gender mainstreaming has not succeeded to date. It establishes the extent of the failure and explores its causes, including the discipline's fragmented structure, polarized culture and a number of theoretical and methodological incompatibilities between mainstream and feminist political science.
