Abstract

The history of printing and print culture is a dynamic and wide-ranging field of study, as the articles in this special issue demonstrate. By way of background, this introductory article briefly outlines the development of the field and highlights a number of controversial issues that have arisen within it. Although often considered part of 'the history of the book' (or 'book history'), much of the history of printing is concerned with the quotidian production of non-book material including a vast variety of ephemeral printed items known as 'jobbing printing'. Printed items, both books and ephemera, have made a significant contribution to the history of the Midlands. In particular, printing played a key role in the industrial development of the region and in the 'Midlands Enlightenment'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Made under pressure: literary translation in the Soviet Union, 1960-1991: by Natalia Kamovnikova, Amherst and Boston, University of Massachusetts Press, Studies in Print Culture and the History of the Book, 2019, 272 pp., $90.00 (hardback), ISBN: 978-1-62-534340-6, $29.95 (paperback), ISBN: 978-1-62-534341-3 Kamovnikova also dwells on the controversies between "free" and "faithful" approaches to translation, which peaked in the 1950s, and briefly touches on important translators of the mid-century such as Mikhail Lozinskii and Boris Pasternak and their respective I Hamlet i translations. The chapter also appropriately includes an overview of translation theory trends in post-WWII USSR - the "linguistic" approach taken by Andrei Fedorov as against the "realist" translation propounded by translator and editor Ivan Kashkin. Natalia Kamovnikova's book makes a welcome contribution to this trend, offering a well-conceived overview of translation and publishing issues, with a focus on the late Soviet period and problems of censorship in particular. Abstract

The article discusses the history of the book in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Three periods are discussed: early settlement through early 19th century; the 19th century up to the time Newfoundland joined the Canadian Confederation in 1949; and, briefly, contemporary history. Topics discussed include books brought into the colony from the late 16th century, the predominantly religious nature of early reading habits, the establishment of the first printing operations in 1807, and developments in the 20th century.

Abstract

Modern media are characterized by extraordinary diversification and derivatisation. Multimodality has become central to all factors of the communication process - sources, codes, messages, channels and networks, intermediaries and agents, as well as end recipients. The most serious collisions occur in the field of publishing and books. Object of the research: A formal reason for this article is the 550th anniversary from the death of Johannes Gutenberg (ca. 1400–1468) used to re-examine and re-define the book as the oldest and, at the same time, most promising media in the world of publishing. Purpose of the research: To revise the periodisation of the publishing evolution outside the four phases of the 560-year biography of the print format of the book: incunables or early- printed books, post– incunables or first-printed books, old-printed books, and new-printed books or contemporary printed books. Methodology/approach: The archaeological approach to the study of media reveals larger-scale reasoning behind the evolution of the book as a medium: Pre-Gutenberg, Gutenberg and Post–Gutenberg book. Results: Each of the three phases is governed by five principles that also pre-empt the future of the print medium in the 21st century: the principle of bureaucracy, the principle of antagonism, the principle of fanaticism, the principle of emancipation and the principle of "form follows function". The perspective of media archaeology helps to correct the historical place and the evolutionary stance of the inventions pertaining to the Gutenberg Galaxy - the print medium, the printing press, the printed book, and paper as a printing resource. Implications: The conclusions may prove important for outlining the technological and ideological patterns affecting the invention and decline not only of the printed book but of every publication format before and after Gutenberg.
