Objectives: To determine swimming training practices in Australian harness racing horses and potential targets for future research., Methods: An online survey of Australian Standardbred trainers and telephone interviews with 20 leading trainers were conducted. Questions relating to swimming facility and protocol, perceived benefits and contraindications were included. Descriptive data analysis was performed., Results: Data were collected from 270 trainers: 250 by online survey (250/1770, response rate 14.1%) and 20 by interview. Of these, 103 trainers (38.1%), including 91 surveyed trainers (91/250, 36.4%) and 12 interviewed trainers (12/20, 60.0%), used swimming exercise. The most popular reasons for swimming were to replace trackwork for horses with limb injuries (79.4%), improve or maintain fitness (62.7%) and provide mental stimulation through variety in training (40.0%). Free swimming (78.4%) was more common than tethered, but the frequency and duration for horses in full training varied widely between trainers, with a median of four swim sessions per horse each week (range 0.5-12) for a median of 7 min (range 1.5-30 min) per session, mostly as a continuous swim, but sometimes as intervals. The main reasons given by those not swimming horses were lack of an adequate facility (60.5%) and lack of perceived benefit (16.2%). Reasons for not swimming individual horses varied widely., Conclusions: Trainer opinions and protocols varied widely with respect to swimming exercise for Standardbred race horses. Objective: To describe the clinical presentation, ultrasound findings, management and outcome in horses with muscle tear injuries of the hindlimbs., Design: Retrospective case series Procedure Medical records of eight horses were reviewed and information on signalment, history, presenting complaint, physical examination findings and further diagnostic tests were recorded. Diagnosis of muscle injury was determined by the presence of abnormal ultrasound findings, compared with the contralateral limb, and, when required, nuclear scintigraphy. Follow-up information was obtained via telephone interviews with owners, trainers and referring veterinarians., Results: Muscle tears causing lameness were identified in the middle gluteal (3), semitendinosus (1), semimembranosus (2) and gracilis (2) muscles. Tears were classified by ultrasound imaging as partial (6) or complete (2). The degree of lameness did not appear to be indicative of the extent of injury or of completion of healing. Long-term follow-up was available for seven horses and the outcome was favourable in six cases., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Ultrasonography is useful in the diagnosis and assessment of moderate to severe muscle strain injuries. The prognosis appears to be favourable in most cases, although recurrence of injury and lameness can delay the return to athletic activity and an inferior outcome with persistent gait abnormality may occur.

The causal factors of equine anhidrosis have not yet been elucidated but defective electrolyte transport mechanisms in the gland are likely to be involved. To investigate this possibility, experiments were performed on cultured equine sweat gland epithelia from five free-sweating UK horses (3 intact males, 2 mares, aged 2-4 years) and from three free-sweating Singapore horses (1 intact male, 2 mares, aged 3-5 years) and three anhidrotic (Singapore) horses (1 intact male, 1 gelding, 1 mare, aged 3-6 years). Cultured cells from each animal were grown on permeable supports and loaded into Ussing chambers to quantify transepithelial resistance and agonist-induced electrolyte transport by the short circuit current (Isc) technique. Transepithelial resistances across the layers of cultured cells were not significantly different between cells from UK and Singapore free-sweating horses, but were significantly reduced in anhidrotic animals. Purinergic agonists added to the apical and basolateral aspects of the cultured cells caused similar increases in Isc between the two populations of unaffected cells, but Isc increases were significantly reduced in anhidrotic animals. Beta-adrenergic agonist stimulation of the anhidrotic cell layers failed to elicit any change in Isc. These pilot results not only confirm earlier conclusions from anatomical findings that failure in the secretory process occurs in anhidrosis but also indicate that both of the known ion transport mechanisms are involved. The trigger for these failures warrants further investigation.

Objective: To investigate the effects on wound healing of transforming growth factor-beta 1 as a topical treatment to full-thickness, excisional wounds of the distal limb of horses., Design: A randomised block study using four horses, each with wounds assigned to four treatment groups., Animals: Four adult Standardbred geldings., Procedure: Four, 4 cm2, full-thickness wounds were created on the dorsomedial and dorsolateral aspect of the metacarpus or metatarsus of each limb of four horses, giving a total of 64 wounds. For each limb, wounds were randomly assigned to four treatment groups: no treatment (control), carrier (Methyl Cellulose gel), 50 ng/wound rhTGF-beta 1 in carrier, and 500 ng/wound rhTGF-beta 1 in carrier. Wounds were treated on day 0 and day 8. Effects of treatment were evaluated on the basis of the presence of exuberant granulation tissue requiring excision, number of times excision was required, total wound area, area of epithelialisation, area of granulation, and histological evaluation of biopsy samples of wounds on day 8 and excised wounds on day 21., Results: Topical application of TGF-beta 1 at the two concentrations studied had no significant effect on the total area of wounds (P = 0.7), the area of granulation tissue (P = 0.78), the area of epithelialisation (P = 0.92), histological assessment or subjective clinical assessment of wounds., Conclusion: TGF-beta 1 had no beneficial effects on wound healing. Additional trials are needed to test if it has value for wound treatment in horses.

The purpose of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics and absolute bioavailability of cisapride after intravenous (i.v.) and intragastric (i.g.) administration in healthy, adult horses. Five animals received single doses of 0.1 mg/kg, 0.2 mg/kg and 0.4 mg/kg cisapride by the i.g. route in an open, randomized fashion on different occasions separated by a washout period of at least 48 h. Four of these horses were also given a single i.v. dose of 0.1 mg/kg cisapride. Jugular venous blood was collected periodically up to 24 h after dosing. Plasma cisapride concentrations were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. There was considerable inter individual variability in pharmacokinetic parameters. The mean (SD) values for systemic clearance (CI) and steady-state volume of distribution (Vss) were 494 (43.6) mL/h/kg and 1471 (578) mL/kg, respectively. Although the rate of cisapride absorption was quite rapid, only about half the i.g. dose was absorbed systemically. The average terminal half-life (t1/2) calculated over three i.g. doses was 2.06 h and that for i.v. administration was 2.12 h. The pharmacokinetics of cisapride from 0.1 mg/kg to 0.4 mg/kg were independent of the i.g. dose.

Six healthy foals underwent instrumentation for measurement of the cardiopulmonary effects of sedation with 1.1 mg/kg bodyweight xylazine hydrochloride given intravenously. Responses to xylazine in foals at 10 and 28 days of age were not significantly different. Foals became sedate and markedly ataxic, and four of the six foals became recumbent. Heart rate decreased significantly but no arrhythmias were detected. Arterial blood pressure increased initially and then fell significantly below pre-injection values. Changes in respiratory airflow, upper airway obstruction and respiratory noise were noted in the initial 20 mins of sedation, after which respiratory rate fell, tidal volume increased, and minute volume decreased gradually. Arterial blood gas tensions and pH did not change significantly during the 120 mins following xylazine administration. Control studies showed no significant changes. All foals recovered uneventfully.

Summary: Four horses presenting for lameness were diagnosed with unilateral osteochondral fragmentation (OCF) of the palmarolateral/plantarolateral aspect of the distal phalanx within the distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ). Histological evaluation of one case supported a diagnosis of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), with patient age and history from two cases suggesting a traumatic origin. Lesion appearance on conventional radiography, computed tomography (CT), nuclear scintigraphy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are described. Fragmentation was best identified on dorsal 65° proximal‐palmaro/plantarodistal oblique (D65°PrPDiO/D65°PrPlDiO) and dorsal 65° proximal‐palmaro/plantarodistal lateral oblique (D65°Pr45°L‐PDiMO/D65°Pr45°L‐PlDiMO) radiographic projections of the foot, but articular pathology appeared more severe on cross‐sectional imaging modalities. In all cases, lameness was refractory to conservative management. Arthroscopic evaluation of the DIPJ was performed in three horses, although the lesion was inaccessible in two. In one horse, access to the lesion was possible due to increased joint laxity, presumably due to concurrent soft tissue injury. One horse was euthanased after failed conservative management, one was pasture sound following palmar digital neurectomy 12 months after initial presentation, one returned to racing and one was lost to follow‐up. The incidence of colic following swimming exercise (SC) in a racehorse population examined over 3 years was 0.08%. Following 167,977 swims, 136 cases were reported. Colic resolved spontaneously in 2 horses, medically in 129 or surgically in 5. In a separate study, 21 horses were subject to exploratory laparotomy for SC. Findings included non-strangulating displacements in 7 horses, strangulating displacements in 7, a combination of non-strangulating and strangulating displacements in 1, prominent gaseous intestinal distension in 5 and no abnormalities in 1 horse. A poor response to analgesia prompted surgery in all cases. Rectal palpation and/or abdominal ultrasound was performed in 16 of 21 cases and abnormalities were found in 14 of these. Of the 21 surgical cases, 20 (95.2%) survived to discharge and 18 (90%) raced postoperatively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 4-month-old Thoroughbred filly presented for abdominal pain was diagnosed with a T-shaped malformation of the ventral colon at exploratory laparotomy. Following resection and anastomosis of the large colon, no further episodes of abdominal pain occurred during a 12-month follow-up. Acute dehiscence of the linea alba occurred as a complication of the initial laparotomy, but was successfully managed following additional surgical repair. T-shaped malformation of the ventral colon has not previously been reported and is considered a congenital malformation of mesocolon formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
