Abstract: In this work, we perform fully three-dimensional numerical simulations of the flow field surrounding cylindrical structures characterized by different types of corrugated surface. The simulations are carried out using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM), considering a flow regime with a Reynolds number [Formula: see text]. The fluid-dynamic wake structure and stability are investigated by means of PSD analyses of the velocity components and by visual inspection of the vortical coherent structure evolution. Moreover, the energy dissipation of the flow is assessed by considering an equivalent discharge coefficient [Formula: see text], which measures the total pressure losses of the flow moving around the various layout under investigation. Outcomes from our study demonstrate that the helical ridges augment energy dissipation, but might also have a role in the passive control of the characteristic frequencies of the unsteady wake flow.

Abstract: We present a Lattice Boltzmann method for the simulation of a wide range of Knudsen regimes. The method is assessed in terms of normalised discharge for flow across parallel plates and three-dimensional flows in porous media. Available analytical solutions are well reproduced, supporting the the method as an appealing candidate to bridge the gap between the hydrodynamic regime and free molecular motion. Abstract: In this work, we experimentally study the water entry of flexible cylinders. Experiments are performed in free fall and we explore variations of the entry velocity by varying the drop height. High speed imaging is utilized to study the fluid kinematics, the pile-up evolution, the cavity formation, and the overall structural deflection. The impact dynamics is analyzed through accelerometers, whereby fibre bragg gratings (FBG) measure the punctual deformation at characteristic locations on the cylinder surface. A modal decomposition approach is utilized to reconstruct the overall structural deflection from the punctual strain measurements. The proposed reconstruction methodology is compared against high-speed images. Results show that during the water entry the cylinder mainly deforms in the direction of the hydrodynamic loading, whereby marked vibrations whose amplitude increase with the entry velocity dominate the dynamic response. Abstract: We investigate the non-equilibrium hydrodynamic effects on the reactivity of a nanoporous catalytic sample. Numerical simulations using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) show that non-equilibrium effects enhance the reactivity of the porous sample, in agreement with theoretical predictions [1] . In addition, we provide a quantitative assessment of the reactivity in terms of the thickness of the reactive layer inside the nanoporous catalytic sample. Such an assessment constitutes a first step towards integrated simulations encompassing nanoscale reactivity and transport coefficients within a macroscale description of experimental relevance. Abstract: A nonisotropic tensorial extension of the single-component Shan-Chen pseudopotential Lattice Boltzmann method for nonideal fluids is presented. Direct comparison with experimental data shows that this extension is able to capture relevant features of ferrofluid behavior, such as the deformation and subsequent rupture of a liquid droplet as a function of an externally applied magnetic field. The present model offers an economic lattice-kinetic pathway to the simulation of complex ferrofluid hydrodynamics.
