We present a fast and accurate, semi-analytical method for predicting hydrogen adsorption in nanoporous materials. For any temperature and pressure, the adsorbed amount is calculated as an integral over the energy density of adsorption sites (guest-host interactions) plus an average guest-guest term. The guest-host interaction energy is calculated using a classical force field with hydrogen modelled as a single-site probe. The guest-guest interaction energy is approximated using an average coordination number, which is regressed using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). Local adsorption at each site is then modelled using a Langmuir isotherm, which when weighted with its probability density gives an accurate description of hydrogen adsorption. The method is tested on 933 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) from the Computation-Ready Experimental (CoRE) MOF database at 77 K from 10 − 5 to 100 bar, and the results are compared against GCMC predictions. To demonstrate the utility of the method, we calculated hydrogen adsorption isotherms for 12,914 existing MOF structures, at two different temperatures at a speed about 100 times that of GCMC simulations and analyzed the results. We found 13 MOFs with predicted deliverable capacities exceeding the DOE target of 50 g/L for adsorption at 100 bar, 77 K and desorption at 5 bar, 160 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We designed, synthesized, and characterized a new Zr-based metal-organic framework material, NU-1100, with a pore volume of 1.53 ccg−1 and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 4020 m2g−1; to our knowledge, currently the highest published for Zr-based MOFs. CH4/CO2/H2 adsorption isotherms were obtained over a broad range of pressures and temperatures and are in excellent agreement with the computational predictions. The total hydrogen adsorption at 65 bar and 77 K is 0.092 g g−1, which corresponds to 43 g L−1. The volumetric and gravimetric methane-storage capacities at 65 bar and 298 K are approximately 180 vSTP/v and 0.27 g g−1, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Hydrogen adsorption isotherms in 20 metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were obtained from grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations and used to develop quantitative correlations to quickly estimate the H2 uptake of MOFs at 120bar from the free volume of the adsorbent. These correlations were then verified with a diverse set of 22 MOFs that were not used in developing the correlations. The simulated high-pressure H2 isotherms in five representative MOFs show that extremely high pressures (∼80,000bar) are required to completely fill the MOF pores with H2 at 298K. Nevertheless, much lower pressures (several 100bar) are sufficient to attain the H2 storage targets for MOFs with large free volumes. For IRMOF-16 with a large free volume (4.322cm3/g), only modest pressures (170 and 280bar) are required to achieve the 2010 and 2015 gravimetric targets. However, considerably higher pressures are required for attaining the volumetric targets. In addition, three interesting pressure regions, which are observed in the H2 densities within the MOFs (ρad ) up to very high pressures, are analyzed by radial distribution functions between the adsorbed H2 molecules as well as those between H2 molecules and metal corners. Metal-organic frameworks-a class of porous hybrid materials built from metal ions and organic bridges-have recently shown great promise for a wide variety of applications. The large choice of building blocks means that the structures and pore characteristics of the metal-organic frameworks can be tuned relatively easily. However, despite much research, it remains challenging to prepare frameworks specifically tailored for particular applications. Here, we have used computational modelling to design and predictively characterize a metal-organic framework (NU-100) with a particularly high surface area. Subsequent experimental synthesis yielded a material, matching the calculated structure, with a high BET surface area (6,143 m2 g−1). Furthermore, sorption measurements revealed that the material had high storage capacities for hydrogen (164 mg g−1) and carbon dioxide (2,315 mg g−1)-gases of high importance in the contexts of clean energy and climate alteration, respectively-in excellent agreement with predictions from modelling. Abstract: Hydrogen storage and delivery in eight representative metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) was investigated using grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations. The simulations demonstrate that the optimal isosteric heat of adsorption (Q st) for maximum hydrogen delivery using MOFs is approximately 20kJ/mol. The results also suggest that increasing the Q st for MOFs with large surface areas (>4800m2/g) is required to attain current hydrogen storage targets in terms of deliverable capacity. Abstract: Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations were used to calculate hydrogen adsorption in IRMOF-16, NU-100, and UiO-68 functionalized with Mg or Fe catecholates on the linkers. We examined how altering the number of metal catecholate groups affects H2 uptake and deliverable capacity near ambient temperature. We find that large free volume and an isosteric heat of adsorption (Q st) of 20kJmol−1 at low loading will maximize gravimetric deliverable capacity while a small pore diameter will maximize volumetric deliverable capacity. This suggests a trade-off between the properties that lead to maximal gravimetric and volumetric capacities. For example, our calculations suggest that NU-100 functionalized with six Fe catecholate groups per linker takes up 5.5wt.% deliverable H2 at 243K and 100bar, but only 24.2gL−1 deliverable H2.
